Welcome to – THANKSGIVING!

It’s Thanksgiving!

My Aunt Rita was a trailblazer. In 1973, she moved her family from Brooklyn NY, living on the 8th floor of a 23 story hi rise apartment building, to a house in Englishtown NJ, approximately 40 miles away. That apartment building was almost exactly 400 yards away from my apartment building, we lived on the 15th floor. We couldn’t believe that they were leaving Brooklyn to go to New Jersey! Brooklyn had EVERYTHING! The best restaurants, the best PIZZA (That’s right Stanger!), shopping for just about anything within walking distance. What’s in New Jersey???

Long story short, my family traveled that 40.1 miles to my Aunt Rita’s house every Thanksgiving. I probably don’t need to tell you, but that 40.1 miles took about 2-3 hours on Thanksgiving. I still remember the car rides, especially the early ones, thinking my Aunt Rita and Uncle Lenny had lost it, this place is “barren”, “it’s in the sticks”. What didwe know, we came from the city. I can’t tell you exactly how many Thanksgiving holidays I spent at that house, but it’s by far the greater majority, probably at least 40.

Just to add a laugh to the story, I currently reside 4.8 miles from that house. We won’t be going there this year (Aunt Rita is fine, don’t worry!), my niece recently purchased a house in East Windsor NJ, and she decided she wanted to have Thanksgiving at her house, and Aunt Rita and Uncle Lenny will be joining us as well.

Why the long story? Because Thanksgiving is all about family, however big or small, it’s all about giving thanks for the people you have, and the food you have to share with them. I love my family, all of them,  my sister, my nieces and nephew, my Aunt and Uncle and cousins , and although there have been times in my life when I’m sure I didn’t appreciate them enough, the truth is, I do. I look back fondly at those trips to NJ from Brooklyn, even though the traffic was a nightmare, and my dad cussed up a storm every year.

One funny anecdote before I go. On the way home, we had to go over the Driscoll Bridge to get to the Outerbridge Crossing which then took us through Staten Island to get to the Verrazano Bridge to get back to Brooklyn. There was a drive-in movie theater on the right side of the bridge, and when driving over the bridge, you caught a little glimpse of the movie as you passed, the screen was no more than 50-100 yards from the bridge. One Thanksgiving, they decided to show a movie with lots of nudity, and if the traffic wasn’t bad enough usually, you could imagine what happens when a movie is showing with naked women all over the screen.   You could only see as you crested the top of the bridge, because they put up wood slats to block the view, but when you got to the pinnacle, you could see. Well, I was about 12, and that was the BEST ride home ever! So what that it took 3 hours, it was worth it!

Enjoy the day with your families, whether it’s the two of you, or 50.  Appreciate what you have, and the people you have to share it with!

Happy-Thanksgiving-day1

I guess what I’m saying is I think this team has other major flaws that has nothing to do with the QB. My feeling is if we correct some issues on this team outside of Tannehill, we can win with him. But I guess if you think that you get put in some category while fans who think he’s part of the problem, they’re just being realistic even when unrealistic things are said about him. Okay I see how it works. LOL

Tannehill is going to be the starting QB next year so let’s hope we address the other issues. 🙂

i agree with you there tim, well more so, i think it is easier to correct the other issues then the ones with the qb. my point about the qb is you have to get real lucky to draft an elite one. like i said others in wash. thought they had theirs in rgIII and look how that ended up. so if they do replace tanny there is a real good chance that qb is going to have flaws also. you know what you have in tanny’s flaws so build a strong team around his strengths and flaws.

    • Tim Knight says:

For starters, put him in the right offense which would be more of a 30 run/30pass traditional WCO to utilize his mobility rather than have him in a shotgun pocket all the time throwing 40+ times and handing off out of it as well. Dumb!

By the way, in all 4 games RT has thrown the ball 40+ times this year, we’ve lost all 4 games. 36 or less we’re 4-2. We don’t have the OL and pass pro to throw like that.

  6. finfanrob says:

    classy

  7. finfanrob says:

    tim,

i hear you on putting him in the right offense. but i also hear things randy and bat complain about and see those faults too. i basically see some good and bad in the guy. the whole issue about getting rid of him is it isnt going to change the team. the defense arent going to magically stop the run cause someone else is playing qb. so any one else, other then getting lucky and drafting that elite qb, anyone else is going to be average too and come with flaws. so start fixed the multiple other flaws first

With 1,522 yards, Brian Hill now holds the Wyoming record for rushing yards in a single season! #GoWyo

  9. Tim Knight says:

FFR, that’s all fair. RT is not this amazing QB nobody has ever seen before. But he’s a quality QB and many of his detractors ignore much of what good he’s done and focus on a selection of examples to fortify their belief in him. I get it. I also see right through it. LOL

  10. CavalierKong says:

    Tannehill

  11. Tim Knight says:

Just some food for thought, we’re 2-13 when RT throws 40+ times. That’s not counting some 38 and 39 etc. games but we need to draw a line somewhere. We’re 25-18 when he throws less than 40 times. To me it’s a huge stat because I don’t think we utilize him the way we should. That and the team has other flaws. Let’s not forget, it’s not just him playing. LOL

    • Try Pod says:

I don’t think anyone has forgotten any of the “good” he has done, mostly because you won’t let them. 😋

      • Tim Knight says:

Well you guys unfairly pile on him and leave that out much of the time. That’s what I see just as much as some of you who think there is this built in defense mechanism for him. I personally don’t think he’s the problem.

  12. stangerx says:

Ahhh Man……I missed the whole pizza thing. Not going stop me though. 🙂

Will pass on which is the very best (some places in Brooklyn serve some pretty nice Za, so I understand the denial). Will add in on Italy though.

My parents and I are in Rome when I was a kid and my Dad decides he has to try real Italian pie. It took us like an hour of hard target search to even find a place that served it. That was like 35 years ago, but back home we could have found like 12 in that time.

The Mrs and I were Rome two years ago……you couldn’t take two steps without seeing a pizza place. So far as I am concerned pizza is American as McDonalds.

  13. stangerx says:

And I hope everyone had a real fine T-Day……..or at least a better one than Tony Romo had. 🙂

  14. Randy says:

    Tim,
Why can’t I talk about what concerns me about Tannehill being the sort of QB who can win championships w/o having to mention his accomplishments? People constantly rip the OL w/o almost ever mentioning how they’ve improved…and they have….but still not good enough. Just sayin’.
    ***
As with every QB, it’s about his weaknesses and limitations…because that is what will be taken advantage of by teams…especially in the playoffs. Teams know what throws Tanny is good at and which ones he can’t make consistently. He probably won’t play better in bigger games…at least I have seen nothing that would suggest that about him up to this point. Will he be better with better talent around him? Of course, but you can say that about pretty much any player. I’d rather have a QB that makes the team better….easier to win championships that way.
    ***
So, the real question is: How close is this team to actually having the sort of talent on the whole team that Tannehill can actually win with? Because, I agree…he’s our QB for the foreseeable future. And, doing that while bringing in a new coaching staff. Sounds like a multi year job to me. I’m back to my “we’re 2-3 years away” mantra….Jesus that’s getting old. Lol

  15. Randy says:

And, I’m hoping like hell Tannehill finds his way, becomes a winning QB and takes this team to a championship! I can talk about his weaknesses or my concerns w/o giving up my hope for him to succeed….just like I do for every player. I just want to win.

  16. finfanrob says:

‘As with every QB, it’s about his weaknesses and limitations…because that is what will be taken advantage of by teams’

ok, what is going to be easier for this team? find a qb without flaws that other teams can exploit or stick with one they have and build a team around him that makes it harder for teams to exploit.

  17. getterdone says:

Randy, you keep saying Tanny unlike other QB’s don’t make those around him better.
Maybe we should ask Landry, Miller, Matthews, Cameron, and oh yeah Mike Wallace….didn’t he have 1000 yards & 10 TD’s last year. Is your boy Bridgewater making Wallace better this year in Minny? LOL

  18. finfanrob says:

no way really. wow i am shocked again. i never in a million years thought you would want the dolphins to win a championship. who would have thunk it

  20. Randy says:

    ffr
Yep, and I have no idea which is easier. But, your assumption is Tannehill can win with a great team around him….maybe he can…maybe he can’t. I’d ultimately prefer a great team, but it’s a lot easier to keep a great QB than to keep a great team together….maybe this franchise can build that sort of team…maybe they can’t. I don’t have a lot of confidence in that happening. Lol

  21. Randy says:

    gdp
I asked all the OL who’ve ever played with him. They all agree with me! Lol

  22. Randy says:

    Tim,
Yeah, I still think our overall talent…the whole roster….is average. Hence my concerns about having to build a great team around Tannehill. It’s not gonna happen overnight, if it can happen at all. Especially since we’ll be starting over with a new head coach. This year has been a step backwards, to me.

    • Tim Knight says:

I don’t think RT needs a great team around him, I think he needs a more competent team. We have too many voids in starting talent at the moment.

  23. finfanrob says:

    randy

first no my assumption isnt that. i have no idea if they build a team around him if they would win a championship. i simply asked a question. my point is every qb is going to have flaws. everyone just wants to keep ignoring my point of elite/great qbs dont come along to the tune of 10 to 15 a year. you yourself just said it is a lot easier to keep a great qb than a great team. well i dont know what they hell you are doing in minn, but you need to get your ass in the nfl cause i can think of about 25+ teams that are waiting on a great qb and you just said that was easy to get.

  24. finfanrob says:

    lol @ stanger.

and just think, he gets to say, i cant lift my arm it hurt to much, you have to just do all the work tonight

  25. getterdone says:

  26. Randy says:

Sorry, I gotta stop blogging while I watch football. Enough negativism. I think Tannehill has worked hard and tried to be a better player while he’s been here. I root for the kid.

    • getterdone says:

I too hope Tanny gets better & the rest of the team gets better. Then the Wins will come when we field solid units on both sides of the ball & ST’s as well. The penalties have been killers too. UGH
      Clean it up Phins!

    • Try Pod says:

      Go Tanne! Lol
Of course you do – everyone does. It’s just that some don’t minimize his deficiencies by blaming them on the rest of the team.
      😋

  27. finfanrob says:

    randy,

if there is a great qb out there that can take the fins to the playoffs and a championship i am the first in line to vote for that. but they have been looking for one or 15 years or so and still havent found one. i am all ready to give up and say they are not going to find a great qb and start working on the rest of the team.

besides, with the best pure passer every to play the game they couldnt win a championship cause they never built a team around him, so i doubt any other qb they get without a solid team will they win one.

so great, now you even blame the poor kid for your depression. like the rest of the team doesnt depress you. like the secondary or d line isnt depressing. just blame it all on the qb
(and i say that in the most sarcastic tone possible. like others saying some here avoid tanny’s faults or even blaming the rest of the team for tannys faults)

Those defenses we had when Marino was here were pretty bad. Those were different times. A QB didn’t have the impact on games like they do now. Marino…on this team…would be a serious playoff contender, IMO. Brady would have this team in the playoffs. It’s just different nowadays. I don’t think the comparisons are fair to anyone.

  34. Randy says:

Same to you and your loved ones! Hope everything is going well.

  36. finfanrob says:

    randy,

i think marino would make this team a better team, dont know about playoffs, this defense is horrible. brady would do nothing for this team unless ross owned the commissioner like kraft does.

  37. finfanrob says:

    jahn,

you have been absent? hmmmmm ok.

(and hope you and yours had a great thanksgiving)

  38. finfanrob says:

    randy,

i take that back. i was thinking about marino and his playing days with a defense like this. in todays nfl this defense just needs to stop teams from scoring 49 points. i dont think marino would have a problem putting up 50 points a game.

  39. Jahndoh30 says:

Thanks Randy and FFR. Same to you and yours!

And Randy…yes, everything is going well. I have much to be thankful for…even if the Fins aren’t at the top of that list. 🙂

We’re not deep enough to overcome losing key players.

And that coaching staff provides the offense in which Tannehill must succeed, although listening to him talk about it, it’s as if he’s merely tolerating the system now.

FFR, guess ya can quit bitchin about Notre Dame now.
What an exciting game. Happy for David Shaw & Kevin Hogan.

  73. steveccnv says:

OD is right on Notre Dame getting the calls, but this one backfired. With 30 seconds left the call on the field was ND TD, but the replay clearly showed the QB’s leg was down before he crossed the goal line. I was thinking at the time it happened maybe it wasn’t such a good thing to get the TD there, as there was still enough time for Stanford to move down the field and get a FG, which is what happened. The play happened on 1st and goal from the 2, with an offside also on the play, so after the replay ND would’ve had 30 seconds to score from the 1 with a 1st and goal and 1 TO left.

Did Mike Hull do that bad?

    getter,

i just point out the obvious. i watched two plays of the ND game and ok just two plays but both happened to be gift calls by the refs. hey i get it, they get ratings. he ncaa wants them in the playoffs. better ratings.

but doesnt matter any more they lost, i am sure they will move up to at least 5th place just in case. lol

YES, Steve, ND DOES GET almost every close call!! – -And, YES, AGAIN, it blew up in their faces when Stanford won on the last play of the game!!! When the Biting Irish play REAL TEAMS, they ARE IN TROUBLE!!! (By the way the term “Biting Irish” goes back to a game against Michigan decades ago when the Irish coaches urged players to bite their opponents if they were hidden under a pile of bodies. NO WORD on if they had to give up BITING during lent!!)

SO HERE’s my handy-dandy overview of the college playoffs:
#1) OKLAHOMA: they are the BEST TEAM in college football RIGHT NOW! –FORGET their embarrassing loss to Texas at mid season. They are DESTROYING good teams right now! –And, since there’s NO Big-12 title game, THEY ARE IN FOR SURE!!!
#2) ALABAMA: looked impressive in their decisive rivalry win at Jordan-Hare Stadium vs. Auburn.–They are a LOCK to DESTROY a Florida team that was LUCKY to beat Florida Atlantic in overtime!! The Gators will get slaughtered by ALABAMA!
#3) CLEMSON: has staggered a bit in resent weeks against inferior Syracuse and South Carolina teams.–CLEMSON, unlike OKLAHOMA, has to play a conference championship game this coming weekend against a RED-HOT North Carolina team that scored 35, yes, 35 points in the 1st quarter against NC State. I give CLEMSON no more than a 50-50 chance of defeating the Tar Heels in the ACC Championship Game!!
#4) IOWA:Stayed undefeated with a comfortable win over Nebraska. NEXT UP: #5 Michigan State, big winners over Penn State. The WINNER of the Big 10 Championship Game will advance to college football’s FINAL FOUR!!
    ———–
SO, Oklahoma, Alabama and the Iowa-Michigan State winner will make the Final Four, while Clemson is only 50-50 to make it. A North Carolina win over Clemson will OPEN UP A SPOT for one of the following 3 teams; A) Ohio State:–Their blow-out win over Michigan will move them up to the #6 spot. They are the MOST LIKELY team to enter the Final Four IF Clemson loses. B) STANFORD–Their last gasp win over the BITERS will impress west coast voters. But STANFORD has already lost TWO games this season and it is very unlikely that the panel would pick them over Ohio State (just 1 loss). NORTH CAROLINA will get some support to grab the fourth spot, especially if they beat Clemson decisively. THEY are more likely to leapfrog into the Final Four than is Stanford, in my opinion, partly because they are unbeaten since an opening week loss to South Carolina.

    GO FINS, BEAT THE JETS!!
