I think we’ll definitely see the offense more balanced with a fair amount of rushing the football. I don’t think it will necessarily be “balls” though, when the HC (interim or not) just fired the previous OC because he wouldn’t allow the offense to run the ball. I think Zac Taylor will mix it up for sure. He’s getting a shot here, and these games will have his stamp on them, win or lose.
We have some seriously fresh horses in the barn, just waiting to run. Lamar Miller has only a little more than half the carries he had last season, 119 carries, he finished the season with 216 last season. Miller is averaging 4.8 YPC, while last year he averaged 5.1. Jay Ajayi is really fresh, after recovering from broken ribs earlier in the season, Ajayi has only 18 carries for 108 yards and a heady 6.0 YPC. Last season at Boise St., Ajayi had 347 carries, so I think Ajayi would love to get some carries the rest of the way. In other words, there is no excuse not to run the ball. The stats bear out when we pass more than 40 times we lose almost every time. Our O-line seems so much more settled when he have balance of rushing to passing.
I think because we’re going to commit to the run, we will see improvement in our offense. Rishard Matthews is banged up, but we drafted Devante Parker for a reason, so now he gets his chance, and it’s time for him to seize the opportunity. I’d also like to see TE Jordan Cameron more involved. He seems very underused for some reason, and I don’t get why. In weeks 3,4 and 5, Cameron was targeted 8,9,8 times, but since then, he hasn’t been targeted more than 5 times. Incidentally, he hasn’t logged more than 4 receptions in a game this season.
Regarding the 3-4 defense as opposed to the 4-3, I think it’s a talent issue, not a scheme issue. Our LB’s are awful, and if we were to change to a 3-4, the only 2 fits I could see at LB would be Vernon (OLB) and Misi (ILB). I don’t think anyone else we currently have on the roster (excluding Dion FF) who fits at LB in the 3-4, and that would also likely mean Suh moving to 3-4 DE, which I’m not sure he would want to do, so I don’t think it’s likely.

Q – Tannehill?
Overpaid? Oversacked? Overrated? Underprotected? Underappreciated? All of the above?
I know stats don’t tell the whole story, but it’s really so unfair to cavalierly (thanks Kong!) compare Ryan Tannehill to Chad Henne. Checkdown Chad has 58 TD’s and 63 INT’s and has a less than 60% completion percentage. He has a higher INT % (3.2) than a TD % (3.0). Some people here have gone as far as comparing him to Henne, and that’s just silly. He compares much closer to Superman (Mac Notwen). Ryan Tannehill has a career 62.0 completion %, Cam Newton has a 59.1 %. Ryan has a 4.0 TD %, Cam has a 4.5 TD %. Ryan has a 2.5 INT %, Cam has a 2.8 INT %. Cam had 14,426 passing yards after his first 4 seasons, and Ryan has 14,245 passing yards after 3 season, 11 games. The biggest difference is in rushing yards and rushing TD, where Cam has a huge advantage. Cam had 2571 rushing yards and 33 TD’s, while Ryan only has 817 rushing yards, and 4 TD’s.
Anyway, it’s not really about Ryan vs Cam, or any other QB for that matter. We need a better team, it’s as simple as that. We need better coaching. Tannehill was on the rise until this clusterf*ck of a season happened. We started off slow with Joe Philbin at the helm, we rallied for 2 games against lesser competition and dominated, and then fell back to earth against the Patriots and Buffalo, and then eked out a win against the Eagles, and lost miserably to Dallas and the Jets. It’s so hard to fairly assess Tannehill this year, it just is. I know he hasn’t played his best football, and yes, he seems aloof, or uncaring at times, which admittedly upsets me, but what Ryan needs is Dan Campbell to hug him and tell him “It’s not your fault” It’s not your fault” It’s not your fault” Maybe Ryan says “Not you Dan”, or maybe he just cries like a baby, I’m not sure.

I don’t think if ManCampbell wins out, it’s going to make a difference as to whether he’s in the running for HC next year.
If they want to seriously make changes, and try to create an entirely new system, Campbell’s name shouldn’t be in the running. If Ross insists that we keep Tannenbaum and Hickey, and just try to fill the slot of HC, and coordinators, I think once again, we have made the mistake of not tearing everything down and starting fresh. I suppose if that’s how they go about it, then Campbell may be a contender for the job no matter what we do the rest of this season. I think that would be a shame, no different than keeping Ireland on after Sparano was fired, and no different allowing Joe Philbin to choose a GM that suited him. For once, please do the right thing, and tear it down completely, top to bottom, and build something from the ground up, and stop trying to fit bricks in on the 33rd floor that fit. Enough of that, it doesn’t work!

I’m not judging anybody on this board, you’re all my friends. I’m just presenting another perspective of this dialogue.
It sucks how the extremists have ruined things for people of their own religion. With the methods of attack these terrorist groups like ISIS use, it’s only natural that people would turn against Muslims in general (somewhat like I’ve been reading on this board).
Not all Muslims are killers and terrorists. I deal with people (read: including Muslims) everyday that are thankful for the opportunity our great country provides to them. They appreciate the opportunity to create a life without bombs going off in neighborhoods everyday, and feeling a modicum of safety. The opportunity to open businesses, live free, and try to enjoy the American dream.
When we start talking about eradicating all Muslims and kicking them all out, I feel like the terrorists are winning.
I understand the anger. I was so enraged at the most recent shooting at a center for disabled adults. Really? Attack a center for disabled people? It’s sick and twisted. Period. But to turn that anger towards all Muslims is misguided. Honestly, it seems to me it’s a very similar mentality to black folk that hate all white people because of racism and mistreatment by white folk. There are a lot of racist, asshole white people, and black folk deal with racism daily, but that doesn’t mean we’re all bad, or even that most of us are bad. It’s not a perfect analogy because being white isn’t an ideology, lol, but the concept feels very similar to me.
When i deal with a black person that obviously dislikes me because I’m white, I often wonder “why does this person hate me? Does he think all white people hate black people? Is he just beating me to the “punch” he thinks I’m going to throw? Does he just hate white people and doesn’t care what we think, and that’s just the way it is?” I see a similar reaction to Muslims just because they are Muslim.
It saddens me knowing these lines are drawn in the sand, and some of us are forced to a side based on pure stupidity,fear, and reactionary ignorance, because fucking people can’t just live and let live.
I’ve never been directly affected by terrorism; maybe I’d have a different outlook if I had. Who knows?
and thus life as it is now. we are all put in our place by a big hairy ape.

I love this place. I still find myself surprised sometimes to realize I’ve been talking with most the people on this board for nearly 10 years. 10 years! That’s longer than most friendships I’ve cultivated in my life. I think the people here are a wonderful mix of America and our brethren over seas as well. People can actually have conversations here and talk very different points of view, and it usually doesn’t devolve into a bunch of name calling (just sometimes, lol).

I didn’t single you out as having said eradicate all Muslims. It was said during the course of the discussion, and seemingly as a natural progression of anger.
I’m all for wiping out the extremists like ISIS. That is the only way to deal with those assholes. There is nothing redeemable in those groups and what they stand for, but it’s extremely important we keep perspective and not let the conversation turn to outright hostility against an entire group of people.
And just to make my position perfectly clear (I can see a “Kong wants to let them all come over here” comment in my future), I’m not taking a stand for letting Syrian refugees into the country, or saying no against profiling as a means to an end, or saying I’m a sympathizer of anything, other than don’t fucking label entire groups of people. I’m saying keep the conversation smart.

I saw the above conversation going on last night, and thought, “I don’t have the energy for this”, so I quietly closed the door and walked away. Too easy for it to degrade into something ugly. Fortunately it seemed to end with no bloodshed.
I truly don’t have the answer to this. I will say the people with with the best chance of fixing the real problem are the people whose religion it is.
This is funny- and sad:
I saw this live and was pretty sure GB was going to win as the ball was in the air, because they had like 4 guys wide open where the ball was headed. The trajectory of the ball was perfect, just like Flacco throws them, it came down like it was being dropped from the sky, giving it more chance of being caught.
We’ve all seen the facemask by now, and I wanted GB to win, but come on man! It was pretty obvious to me, while watching the replay when it happened, that once contacted Rogers turned his head to make it look like a facemask. They asked some NFL guru if Rogers moved his head to try and draw the facemask and he said it was ridiculous. Then why did Rogers immediately put his hand up asking for the facemask, genius?
My problem with the facemask is, and I don’t care if it was facemask or not (this one wasn’t), they called it. I’m going to say it every time I see it, teams like the Cheats, Packers, Dallas, both NY teams… get these calls, way more so than other teams. Why? Because the NFL isn’t on the level.

With Lazor gone, I hope we go on a run to finish the season and Campbell gets a real strong consideration to remain HC.

What has Campbell done that makes you think he’s actually qualified to be a Head Coach? I know you feel if we have excellent coordinators, he could get the job done, but shouldn’t the HC be more qualified than the coordinators?
It could go either way. Generally the experienced HC is the way to go and if a good leader can make the coordinators look good, get the best out of them.
Then there are the times where the coordinators make the HC look good too.
At the end of the day, it’s about team work, and I’m not talking just the players. The coaching staff needs to be all on the same page with the proper vision and proper systems for their personnel.
They also need to be flexible and adaptable to personnel, injuries, game plans against them, and in game situations.
Lots of moving parts that all need to be working in sync!
A good gauge of Campbell will come down to the last 5 games with not a lot to play for post season wise, but to get better, develop young talent.
If I’m Ross & the FO, I also find out what the players think of him. Will they ‘go thru a wall for him’, do they believe in him, is he developing and using them the right way in their minds as well?
I’d ask them this, cause that means a lot. That’s leadership, the HC’s primary job. So because of that, I’d also ask the coaches under him at this time the same type of questions asked of the players. Then you’d know if other coaches would want to coach under him.
He is young and inexperienced as a HC. But the thing Ross & the FO needs to strongly consider is, Does he have that ‘it’ factor you look for!
Don Shula did as well as a few other young HC’s in the annals of NFL history.
He doesn’t show any signs of having IT, all he’s done is made them a tougher team and rallied them a couple of games.
I was angry last night and I apologized for starting the conversation. That’s also why I bailed. I’m just sick of it. Let’s wait for a few more mass murders and maybe get some footage of people celebrating it and then we can discuss it again if none of us happen to be the victims this time.
Sadly it’s going to continue for more than one reason that I won’t get into.
Just be strong, prepared, vigilant, calm, & protect your family.
I do think Campbell could be a good HC with a fresh start and a chance to pick his own staff from the beginning but I don’t think it will happen in Miami. I think Ross will target a proven HC.

Why anyone would want Campbell as our head coach next yr is beyond me. To win the division we have to beat the cheats, he hasn’t shown me anything to make me believe he can compete with them. He’s clueless at how to manage a clock at the end of games, but he can get someone to do that. The real issue is strategizing to beat them.
Sure you can get coordinators to do that for you, but how long will they last, if they’re any good. The HC needs to be smart and have a clue.
Well he knows the game, has a passion for it and I believe he’s a leader of men. This was his first go around as a HC under not so great circumstances. This team is a mess so to me it’s not on him. This team is not as good or as talented as people thought. Yes we do have some talent and promise but more work is needed unfortunately.
One thing that really hurts Campbell that he inherited is the Phins have went from 24th rated Run Defense in 2014 & the late season slide to miss the playoffs, to seeing Suh signed to the biggest NFL contract league wide & our 2015 Run defense falling, failing, to 32nd, dead last in the league.
That’s even worse than the Defense we had in 2007, the 1-15 season.
That type of defense couldn’t even get Shula & Marino into the playoffs/super bowl.
The problem with the run D is the LBs, the Dline occupies the Oline, but the LBs don’t make the play. It’s mostly on the MLB, we must get a good one early in the draft.
Ok, we’ll go with that, but regardless it has severely hurt the overall team and the chances of winning any games.
I’m sure LB will be high on our list. Not sure if there is that sure thing MLB in this draft. Really good 3 down LB/MLB are hard to find. But I’m pretty sure we’ll be addressing the LB position regardless of who the next regime/HC is.
I know right now every keeps mentioning Jaylon Smith but I’ve read some scouts say he’s better suited outside in the NFL. He’s a bit on the slim side for the inside.

Jaylon Smith makes plays though. I’d like to see either him or Myles Jack. One of the main reasons this defense is underperforming is because of the lack of play-making LB’s.
I agree we need better LBs. I just stated that Smith may not be an NFL MLB.

I like Campbell, and it would have been a great story, he comes in as interim coach and turns it around but it’s not really gone that way. I think for him to become anything other than the interim coach he would have had to knock it out of the park. Granted, the fact you are coming in as an interim coach is it’s a bad situation to start with so not his fault necessarily. Sorry GDP.

His only chance to remain is he turns the team around starting right now, as in winning at least 4 of the last 5. I just don’t see it happening.
I agree. The only way he even has a shot of staying is with a 5-0 finish, which is highly unlikely. I think he has the passion, but does he have the football IQ to effectively game plan on week to week basis? Recent games have suggested no.
Even winning 4 of the last 5 would be a good showing. But we can’t keep getting blown out every other game either.
The thing Ross, the FO, and us know it all fans need to ask ourselves after the next 5 games are done is;
Is Dan Campbell an upgrade over Joe Philbin, and if so, what kind of coaching staff can make that difference very significant than to that of which Philbin brought here?
When interviewed can Campbell show more evidence, have a better vision, be more convincing, & ‘lead’ his potential employers to desire him as much as his players do. 😉
That’s what I’d be looking for in all the candidates that will be interviewed.
Like I just said to Herd, it has to start right now. Let’s see the approach the offense takes now that Lazor is gone. The only chance this team has of say winning 3 or 4 of it’s remaining games is for the offense to go on a run. The defense isn’t good enough to carry them and scoring 20 or less points per game isn’t good enough and that’s what this offense is right now.
Yep, I’m expecting some new life from the Offense, even tho they can’t overall that flawed Lazor system completely yet. But at least show some commitment to running the damn ball.
Brian, like I said what I’ve read from scouting reports Smith is considered more of an OLB in the NFL. That doesn’t mean he’s not good or wouldn’t be a good pick for us. He just may not be a MLB.

Saying it and doing it are two different things. The Jets players said the same thing about Rex and and they went 4-12 and got blown out multiple times. Talent is still the key. We have a lot of voids unfortunately.

It’s being committed to football 24/7, in the weight room, in the film room, on the practice field, etc etc.

Out of context! I never said I want him to be HC, yeah it would be a nice story. Yeah he’s someone I like with his straight from the hip attitude. I think with the right staff and personnel moves he could be good.
But a lot of his being here depends on what he gets out of the remaining ashes of this imploded team and will it be enough to convince Ross & Co.
I’m also ok with another HC, if it’s the right one and not just chasing names again.

I’ve thought about that. Sparano really didn’t have a very good team to work with when you think back on it and he did try to change things, make adjustments when something wasn’t working. Plus, the players liked him. I really thing\k we would have been better off today if we had kept him and gotten rid of Ireland. Or maybe I’ve become senile! lol
Sparano never went on to doing any better elsewhere with the Jests, Raiders, or 49’ers.
The jury is still out on Campbell who’s nearly 20 years younger than Tony.

I don’t think age is a big factor in this either except the older coaches are going to have more experience which is a definite plus in my book.
Even just calling more sensible plays on down and distance should help this offense.

On 1st down if we run and pick up 4+ yards, how about running again and not throwing a pass at the LOS on 2nd down which results in minimal yardage most of the time anyway. Maybe then it’s 3rd and 2 which is manageable and go from there. Stop with the asinine play calls and trying to be tricky with stupid shit. take advantage of Miller and Ajayi. Miller is our most explosive player and Lazor minimized him too often. That right there was a sign of a guy who didn’t get it.
Mike E, coaching matters but this team also needs some better players.
I know we need better players, but it also seems like we can never extract enough from our players, and that’s disappointing.
Unfortunately we have too many young players not really ready to start or play a lot starting and playing a lot. We also can’t catch a break. Albert works his way back, James goes down. Douglas and Turner have been up and down at G then Pouncey goes down and Douglas has to play center. We can’t seem to get anything going up front. Then on defense we’re playing young undrafted LBs and young DBs who are still a bit green. We lack big time playmakers as well. Hopefully Parker starts to bring some of that.
….and don’t forget now we’re down 3 DT’s, once a position of strength before we abruptly cut Francis, then lost Mosely & Mitchell to injury.
Now suddenly drafting Phillips in the 2nd round looks genius…lol

I’m not sure about Campbell as HC. I like the guy but IMO he’ll basically have to win out to have chance at keeping the HC position. Personally, I want to see a veteran HC that has a proven track record, but there aren’t a lot of viable options out there to choose from.
I still think Mike Smith 2nd time around could be a charm. He’s had a year off to recharge and has had success. More so than other coach available I can think of. 7 seasons, 5 winning, 4 playoff appearances, two 13-3 seasons and a championship game appearance. Gee wouldn’t that be nice. He can also put together a good staff being that he’s been around for awhile and has had success. He’s got some clout.
I know he’s a controversial choice for HC on this board, but I agree. He has experience and has shown he can take a crap team and at least get them to the playoffs. I’m just sick of first time HCs
Phillips is going to be good. He flashes every game, anchors well and gets his hand up and blocks passing lanes and passes (3). He’s also got a couple of sacks.
I like Phillips. He seems to have a knack for getting in the passing lane. He should only get better as he gains experience. Biting as a pup and what-not.
He could also be a 3-4 NT if a new staff goes that way. He’s massive at 6-6 330, powerful and can move for a big man.
Frankly at this point, I’d rather see us lose out the flipping season and get as high a pick as possible. I stopped actually enjoying the games sometime around the New England game. Even the wins aren’t fun for me right now. 😦
There are always good prospects throughout the 1st rd and into the 2nd. It’s about picking the right guy. Like not taking Ted Ginn at #9 when Patrick Willis is sitting there. SMH
Yeah, but if we can get into the top 3 you have to figure we’re guaranteed a quality player. Only a team that REALLY sucks could miss on the 3rd pick in the draft…..
Tim, I thought about Mike Smith before & have mentioned him as a candidate to look at. But I’d really scrutinize him in the vetting process as we should all candidates.
I want a gutsy coach that has nerves of steel and is smart, crafty, can quickly think on the fly.

I didn’t even read it because it was the personnel dept. that shit the bed in ATL. Look at the once 5-0 Falcons this year now 6-5. Outside of a handful of really good players their roster stinks.
Smith said in 2013 that his team wasn’t physical enough and that carried through into his last season in 2014. It was a personnel issue. When the old guard of Gonzo, Jackson, Abraham and White (he’s no longer the player he once was) etc. were done there wasn’t a lot of vet experience and leadership left.
Kong, right now we’re picking 7th and most likely we’ll be top 10 when it’s all said and done. If you can’t find a good player top 10 then something is wrong.

What’s weird is he’s still our property and could be back if he turns his asshole ways around. I’m not counting on it but it’s possible. If he does do that we could go 3-4 defense next year which would be best for Jordan as a 3-4 OLB. That’s probably McCain’s best position too.
Just based on what we’ve seen unless we all of a sudden go on a crazy run, we’ll likely only win 2 more games, 3 tops. So we’re going to finish 6-10 or 7-9. That will likely get us a top 10 pick.
It bums me out to be in this mode at this point of the season. I think the only time I’ve felt this hopeless as a fan was in the 2007 season. We just can’t seem to get it right.
How do fans of teams like the Browns and Lions stick with a team after an entire lifetime of failure? I’m starting to gain a newfound respect for those fans bases, lol.
We had a great run with a legendary coach in Shula and then a great QB in Marino at Shula’s end. Now we’re in that mediocre era and it sucks.

Not really. They all have the same flaws we do. Colts are 6-5 in a bad division once again, the Giants are 5-6 in a bad division and the Chargers are 3-8 in a so so division.

Herd, my life changed quite a bit when my uncle left us. He was there when I was born, my Mom’s youngest brother who was more of a brother than uncle to me. My Mom had me when she was 21. My uncle was 11 years younger. So it was an 18-8 relationship for me. That’s brother more than uncle.
He turned me onto rock music and bought me albums for my birthday and X-mas throughout the years. He would take time out to play GI Joe with me even if it meant prolonging him getting laid as a young lad, which I now know he did for me. He was the type of a guy who take a bullet for you if it meant you surviving. He had a huge heart. I miss him.

I see there was some talk about MLB earlier. I remember getting a lot of pushback when I advocated for Kendricks as a potential first round pick. He was playing pretty damn good before he got hurt this year.
Not saying I don’t like Parker or that the Fins made a mistake, but I am saying it’s kind of important to stay open minded when we’re debating these players predraft. You might not see it in a player, but somebody else just might. 😉
