Put Me in Coach . . .

Adam Gase

Miami Dolphins Head Coach Adam Gase

The Miami Dolphins have named their 12th Head Coach in the history of the franchise, Adam Gase.  The former Offensive Coordinator of the Chicago Bears and also the Denver Broncos, is now the youngest Head Coach in the NFL at 37 years old.   Adam Gase and the Miami Dolphins will not be hiring an Offensive Coordinator this season, as Gase will fill those duties himself.

Gase has already begun filling out his staff, beginning with the hiring of former Cincinnati Bengals Defensive backs and former NFL CB Vance Joseph.

Gase has also named Matt Burke, former Cincinnati Bengals Linebacker Coach to man that same post for the Miami Dolphins

Linebackers Coach Matt Burke

Our new Tight Ends Coach is Shane Day, who was the TE Coach for the Chicago Bears

Replacing the vaunted John Benton is Chris Foerster.  Foerster spent the 2004 season as Offensive Coordinator for the Miami Dolphins, but joins the Dolphins after coaching last year as OL Coach for the SF 49ers.

The Dolphins have also named Shawn Jefferson as Wide Receivers Coach, former NFL WR, and former Wide Receivers Coach of the Tennessee Titans.

In addition to all the position coaches and assistants, the Dolphins have promoted Eric Stokes, formerly the Assistant General manager of the Dolphins to Senior Personnel Executive.

So, what does all this mean?  Will Adam Gase be able to transform our predictable, ineffective offense into a high scoring unit?  Will new DC Vance Joseph employ a 4-3, or a 3-4, or a hybrid of both?  Will former Dolphins OC and now OL Coach Chris Foerster be able to fix this much maligned unit?  There a lots of questions that beg to be answered, but patience will be necessary folks, because we have a long way until we play our 1st regular season game in 2016, and we probably won’t have all the answers until possibly the end of the 2016 season, or maybe even years later.

Yeah, I’ve already started feeling optimistic, they suckered me in again!  I like that Gase will be the OC, and will be calling the plays.  No excuses about chain of command or the OC being stubborn and not listening to the HC, because the HC is the OC.  Accountability my friends, and I like it!  Gase has a lot of work to do to catch up with our divisional foes.  Save for the victory against the Patriots in Week 17, the Dolphins were 1-5 in the AFC East, and if we want to contend for a playoff spot, we must do better against our divisional foes.

Here’s to hoping Gase is the magic man, and Bill Belichick, Todd Bowles and Rex Ryan are all screaming at the end of next year for Adam Gase to get off their case!

GO DOLPHINS !!

Blogiversary? I’m gonna wish the blog happy birthday but I do like Herd’s new word!
Been catching up on recent events by speed reading through the comments and finally caught up.
Firstly, sincere condolences to Stanger and his new porn alter-ego Stanger X (even if it was your dad’s time, it’s still your dad). I’m probably going to face that this year and it’s an event I am not looking forward to. Also to Brian and family on the sad passing of his niece – I shed a tear for that little girl when I first read it and I’ve filled up again now just thinking about that tragedy.
Thanks to all the well wishes that came my way too. The great thing about this blog is when a blogger experiences troubles, the wagons are immediately circled and sometimes a few kind words are just what you need to get back up and continue the fight. Thanks all. Tim left a great post recently about how lucky we are to have this forum and everyone on it and I second that. FRFR did too but his wasn’t quite as good 🙂
As for the ramp I built, it was 75 bucks of timber, screws and hinges, took me two days (a carpenter I am not, and no power tools were used – I did it old school) and even if it had just been used once it woulda been worth it but its had plenty of use so I’m made up. It’s way too steep and could be a fun park white knuckle ride, but dad hasn’t complained. I confess to having a large guffaw at your expense Herd after reading your experience. Sorry. 😦
Happy birthday OD for tomorrow I think it was?
Anyone else I have missed, apologies.
Oh – Piggy – good luck with the new venture!!!
Thanks for the article Mike. I promise to update my “firsts” story of being a Dolfan before the draft. I wrote it for Tin’s site back in the day but will update it. It is an epic of D proportions, but I will select a BOTW to appease FFR.
I admire your optimism Mike. I wish I could share it but I will not let myself. I will never take the cheese again. I did this year. We owned the Panthers in camp/practices and look where those two franchises ended up. In future, I will only judge the team after week 16 is over. Of course, hope will never die. But optimism and hope are two very different animals.
    Cheers mob.
    First btw?

Good job Mike, I agree with UK though that I have hope but I took the cheese for the last time. Maybe after FA and draft that old feeling may come back but not now. Right now I still wanna kick Tannehill in the nuts, lol.

Good to see you UK, I hope things get better for you my friend. You’re allowed to use power tools you know.

  5. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I think its a little odd that Gase will be the OC and HC
Why don’t they hire Philbin as the OC – that way Gase can still call the plays ….lol

  6. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Good to see ya UK! Good job on the rollercoaster/entry ramp! Dad gets a thrill ride every time he goes in or out of the house, seems pretty cool.

  7. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Damn, RIP Alan Rickman. Really liked Rickman. Snape and Hans, two parts that will live on forever.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Oddly enough, I would have been fine signing Gerardo Parra instead of D’Aza. Parra could bat lead off, and that lengthens the lineup right there. .291, 14 HR’s and 51 RBI’s and only 92 strikeouts in 589 AB’s, and also 14 SB’s. Not that 14 SB’s is that impressive, but man, this lineup is bereft of anyone who could run the bases.

On the other hand, I’ll take Cespedes if it works. I wouldn’t expect anything close to what he did for us in the 2nd half, but he still makes the lineup much more dangerous by making everyone else around him see better pitches.

  8. BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

nice job mike. Do you know if we’ll hire a QB coach or is gase gonna be both OC and QB coach?

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I do believe they are looking for a QB Coach. I saw something the other day, but now I can’t find it. It was speculation on who might be our next QB Coach. Still looking

  9. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Son

Understand your plight, I really do. I’m a sucker. I guess my optimism is due to the fact that I really wanted change, and for better or for worse, we got it. You know I never liked Philbin, and Gase was not the guy I had in mind either, but maybe, just maybe they finally got this one right.

  10. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

For those of us who like the Giants we can continue to root for Joe Philbin. LOL

Mike E, yep on Philbin. Ken is probably psyched. LOL

  12. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I think they brought in Philbin to rein in OBJ. He’s just the perfect guy to get all up in OBJ’s face and tell him like it is. lol

  16. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    Well
they say it happens in 3s
    First Bowie
    Then Alan Rickman
    now Fredrico “Acid Blood” DeCoda
Fredrico was best known for his appearance in Spaceballs

Before Spaceballs Fredrico was a well known Shakespearian Actor
His odd appearance did not stop critics from praising his performance in Hamlet
Never has a long tail delivered such a moving performance

Fredrico – you will be missed

    Goodbye my darling
    Goodbye my baby
    Goodbye my ragtime doll

(A tear falls from Piggy’s eyes)

And don’t any of you fucks tell me Lawrence Phillips was the 3rd
I thought he died years ago – so it doesn’t count

  17. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

You guys remember 13KVfins from the SS and Tin’s blog?

He just contacted me on twitter this morning. I haven’t seen him in a long time. I invited him here, hopefully he shows up.

  18. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Lol, so much for “nobody wants Caughlin, he’s too old”.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I didn’t want Coughlin as the Phins HC. I like the idea of a young HC who hopefully has some success and can be our coach for awhile. Outside of those two SBs, the Giants have also had some mediocre/bad years under Coughlin. It’s not like they’ve been a perennial playoff team.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Yeah, I can agree with that. I didn’t want him either. But wasn’t the “he’s too old” the reasoning (read: presented as fact) given for the Fins not even giving him a look. Along with something along the lines of “nobody else is even giving him an interview” as validation of the fact.

  19. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Krill would be great here. He could compete with D with those long posts. lol

  20. finfanrob's avatar finfanrob says:

the giants are said to be in horrible shape. that is why they brought in philbin. matter of fact here is a picture of their sidelines

  21. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I would have taken Coughlin with the unlikely scenario of him grooming Dan Campbell, but I don’t think realistically that really can happen.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

      I hand’t even thought of that scenario. Campbell’s passion with Coughlin’s know-how.

      • The route the Saint’s have taken, would’a been good for us had SPayton became available and or Coughlin to Miami with DanC as their protege/eventual replacement.. T’was my favorite option !! Really liked DanC, wanted to bare his baby to keep him.. No-Wonder he left… Better opp for him behind sooner to retire than Gase, Sean Payton, Good for DanC, all the best to him, he was a fun HC, loved his press conferences !!!

  22. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Lol, I can’t believe how addicted to this freakin fixed game I am. I swore I was done, was going to cancel my DirecTv, and so on. I already am excited about the new HC, the new hires, and the possibility of a new look next year. This stuff is worse than nicotine.

Then he shows ‘innovative’ routes and basically shows two completions on a TE out route where Peyton Manning sees a S lined up over the space in both sequences but because it’s Peyton manning he makes the quick read that the S is not going to come down to barrel in on the TE.

DT, OG, ILB, FS are musts. CB and DE are needs. QB & TE are wants. That’s 8 positions. It can be done in 1 year.

    How is DT is must?

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

      WTF
Why would he even mention DT….

I would probably say LBs (both inside and out) and OG are musts

S, CB & DE are a little less of a priority – but it would be nice to address the defense significantly this offseason

If you can get a good TE then go for it

  72. Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

    Boulder,
I expect Grimes to stay; he’s not above market price for what he is (elite CB getting 12+ per). He only got roasted by the very elite WR IMO. He also was left on an island much by both Coyle and Lou. Most teams have better schemes with their safeties than what Coyle did that aid corners more.
I think the LB units were the real weakness, allowing opposing RB & QB to easily make decisions.

    • BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

I just don’t want to go into another season relying on Grimes to cover brandon marshall and sammy watkins. They both roasted him. So did OBJ.

BTW I don’t consider Grimes elite anymore. far from it. he’s too small to play against big wr’s. Maybe he was injured last year but IMO grimes didn’t have a very good year.

Agree with Boulder on Grimes. We have 6 divisional games, and he can’t cover 2 of the guys which makes 4 games, and the Patriots will likely finally find someone he can’t cover either.

  78. drg's avatar drg says:

Just me, but I wish we had Chip Kelly coming in to coach the team. I think there’s a much higher chance of us finally making the playoffs than with Gase who is a total unknown.

  79. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I forgot that Shaq Lawson was hurt and wearing a brace in the championship game but he gutted it out and played well. He lead the nation in tackles for losses with 25.5 to go along with 12.5 sacks. He’s a prospect I like for us.

  80. drg's avatar drg says:

    Tim,

There’s a big difference between a guy that built a college powerhouse program and controlled every aspect of it to an assistant that has never been HC at any level. Kelly has a big ego and wants things done his way, but so do most of the great HCs out there. I think he’s going to succeed in SF despite a bad FO and owner. Same reason I wanted him here.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Lots of first time HCs who have been successful have come from the same path as Gase. There is no perfect formula. You could hire a vet coach who’s had some success and not have success. I’m not a Chip Kelly fan so I’m not bummed we didn’t hire him.

I don’t know. Our secondary was so bad last year. Historically bad. Grimes is not starter material anymore. I really think we need 2 new starters at CB and one at Safety.

I agree that mlb is probably the next biggest need. And this is assuming we re-sign shelby and vernon. This team has a lot of holes.

    **************
our run defense was 28th in the nfl
and do you remember all those 3rd and _______ conversions

    that’s LBs
    shitty tackling from LBs
    shitty angles
    shitty in coverage

we have some young players like McCain and Lippett that I expect to help out the secondary

I would not call our secondary historically bad
    nowhere near it
I’m guessing that was just a figure of speech
we were #21 in the league in pass defense

Guys get beat for big plays
    it happens
and sometimes as an audience we emphasize that b/c they are such big chunk quick strike plays
but that is not our weakness by any stretch

The situation at LB and OG right now is hopeless
the personell there is just not pro level

to not address LB you are putting your hope in Shepard and Misi in 2016
but at CB you have Grimes a former probowler coming off a subpar year for him, and a few young players who might develop
That is not a dire situation
its not a good situation – its risky
    but not dire IMO

Don’t get me wrong I favor drafting DBs and drafting them early

but to me LB and OG is hopeless with our current personel

    where other areas need help

The good news is that OG is usually not to expensive to address via free agency
    we don’t need a probolwer
    just some good OGs

  83. Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

    Mike E,
I remember BMarshall scoring once he was in the slot which isn’t on Grimes. OB different story; his TD came where only he could make the catch when it was on Grimes.

  84. Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

I don’t think the situation at CB is as dire given the status QUO.
As long as Jamar is left off the field or cut/traded the results should be ok.
McCain (rookie) had his moments but he’s suffering from inexperience (not skill).
To me it’s evident at what happened after he gave up a few big plays (he was arguing with Jones on assignment as the WR was in both their space).

  85. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    thanks for the link

I actually think Kiper nailed our needs
I like his thought process on selecting papers

but he said this about Myles Jack
“### On Jack: “Jack isn’t your classic downhill run-stuffer — the guy can flat-out cover, and he epitomizes what teams need at least one of in 2016. He’s a special talent.””

I’m not sure at the end of the day between Lawson, Jack and Hargraves – that Jack is not just the best player and the most likely to have an impact

I like all those players though
I wouldn’t complain with any of them

but “he is a special talent” jumps out at me

    Say that again
    He is a special talent

Imagine people talking about our roster like that

we could use a few guys like that

  86. Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

    Tim,
Aside from Lawson, teammate DL Kevin Dodd (3 sacks) had a big showing in the title game and has declared for the 2016 draft.

  88. Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

    Piggy,
I like Jack alot (please FFR, no jokes lol), and especially since he’s coming from the same system Kendricks came from and with similar production. You can’t teach motor/instincts

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

      No you can’t teach instincts
and if we went outside early with a talent like Jack or Smith
we can probably look inside a little later in the draft with guys like Beckwith, Scooby Wright or Matkovich

I would like to draft 2 LBs
2 LBs we can play with Jenkins
and 2 LBs to make plays behind Suh and Phillips

of course another safety might work as well
      a guy like Ramsey

  89. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The Eagles hired Doug Pederson to be their HC. 3 years as OC no HC experience. He also looks like this guy. LOL

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Mando is the one calling our secondary historically bad. He wrote a whole article about it.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

      That is Mando history….lol

its just not historically bad IMO
our defense as a whole wasn;t good
so I’m not defending the secondary

but I think the real weakness on this team was the LBs for most of the season

and I think they make the secondary and the DL look a lot worse

I think CB is a good pick the 1st round though

I’m just saying, I don’t think our situation there is quite as bleak as some other areas

    • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Figured you became Kong when nKONGsuh came along.. My FF team was named Algae SUHmokers ; )) !! Thanx for the Welcome!!

    13kv,

  97. BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

    piggy,
I agree that LB is a huge need. Probably our biggest need. I just want a real shutdown corner to take the other teams best reciever out. We may have to just eat it and double team.

I don’t think that grimes can handle the alpha receiver like a real shut down corner can anymore.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Shutdown corners are rare and it’s so hard to play coverage these days with the way the rules are set up that pass rush is the most important element of defense, not looking for elite corners.
