Put Me in Coach . . .

Adam Gase

Miami Dolphins Head Coach Adam Gase

The Miami Dolphins have named their 12th Head Coach in the history of the franchise, Adam Gase.  The former Offensive Coordinator of the Chicago Bears and also the Denver Broncos, is now the youngest Head Coach in the NFL at 37 years old.   Adam Gase and the Miami Dolphins will not be hiring an Offensive Coordinator this season, as Gase will fill those duties himself.

Gase has already begun filling out his staff, beginning with the hiring of former Cincinnati Bengals Defensive backs and former NFL CB Vance Joseph.

Gase has also named Matt Burke, former Cincinnati Bengals Linebacker Coach to man that same post for the Miami Dolphins

Linebackers Coach Matt Burke

Our new Tight Ends Coach is Shane Day, who was the TE Coach for the Chicago Bears

Replacing the vaunted John Benton is Chris Foerster.  Foerster spent the 2004 season as Offensive Coordinator for the Miami Dolphins, but joins the Dolphins after coaching last year as OL Coach for the SF 49ers.

The Dolphins have also named Shawn Jefferson as Wide Receivers Coach, former NFL WR, and former Wide Receivers Coach of the Tennessee Titans.

In addition to all the position coaches and assistants, the Dolphins have promoted Eric Stokes, formerly the Assistant General manager of the Dolphins to Senior Personnel Executive.

So, what does all this mean?  Will Adam Gase be able to transform our predictable, ineffective offense into a high scoring unit?  Will new DC Vance Joseph employ a 4-3, or a 3-4, or a hybrid of both?  Will former Dolphins OC and now OL Coach Chris Foerster be able to fix this much maligned unit?  There a lots of questions that beg to be answered, but patience will be necessary folks, because we have a long way until we play our 1st regular season game in 2016, and we probably won’t have all the answers until possibly the end of the 2016 season, or maybe even years later.

Yeah, I’ve already started feeling optimistic, they suckered me in again!  I like that Gase will be the OC, and will be calling the plays.  No excuses about chain of command or the OC being stubborn and not listening to the HC, because the HC is the OC.  Accountability my friends, and I like it!  Gase has a lot of work to do to catch up with our divisional foes.  Save for the victory against the Patriots in Week 17, the Dolphins were 1-5 in the AFC East, and if we want to contend for a playoff spot, we must do better against our divisional foes.

Here’s to hoping Gase is the magic man, and Bill Belichick, Todd Bowles and Rex Ryan are all screaming at the end of next year for Adam Gase to get off their case!

GO DOLPHINS !!

    I like Hargraves and Alexander
I’m just not sure they are “shut down” corners

I think a great corner can make a good defense great
But we’ve seen a few go 5th rounders like richard Sherman and Norman be at that level

Personally I want to see Tony Lippett get playing time
I also think Bobby Mcacain might be our future at nickelback

There is room to add a great CB
But I have less questions about the lbs and pass rushers early than the CBS
Except Jalen Ransey – but that’s bc I think he is going to be a very good safety

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I would also look for Taylor to compete and try to rebound from what was a bad year for him. But we’ve seem him play better. Not sure what was up with him. He has the skills to play the position.

I would definitely look to some of our young corners next season. Br. McCain is a solid vet and we could even add another young corner in FA. I’m not a fan of taking a corner at #8 this year. I’d go pass rush or LB but I’m not sold on LB at #8 now after thinking about it.

Myles Jack is a really good cover ground guy but he’s also not considered stout against the run or overly physical. He’s more athlete than bad ass LB. He’s still young so he could get better and more physical in time. Just not sold on a LB at #8. You can find good LBs in other rounds too if you target them as a priority.

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I think in the outside Jack will be exceptional
But yes he probably can use another lb more oriented to the run defense

He might, he’s physical. Look at the Pats, they made McCourty a safety.

I think in today’s game you have to find flexible players who can play multiple roles and matchup. The standard defense is a dying breed because offenses throw so much shit out there.

Better than a tackling dummy? It’s possible, but being better than he was at CB isn’t really saying much. I know the kid has a little physicality in him for a CB, and i get you think he can be better with the ball in front of him rather than having to backpedal and keep up, so I guess that will be up to our new DC Vance Josephs, and whomever we hire to be DB’s coach.

  21. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    Tim

Jack is a great pass defender
But he’s not bad vs the run
It’s all relative when people evaluate they guys
The scouts have to find warts

And if a guy is an elite in pass coverage
What do you think hey are going to say his weakness is

I don’t see him missing tackles on tape
It’s not like he is wheeler

He’s a good all around LB
Who happens to better than some NFL safeties in coverage

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I never said he was bad against the run, he’s just not stout or overly physical. Elite in coverage at the college level may mean solid at the next. Know what I mean? I’m not using the #8 pick on a nickel LB.

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

The guy is probably going to be the most athletic guy in most teams rosters

He is a 3 down lb

If you want to be able to shut down 3rd down plays
You need that kind of lb who excels in coverage

The NFL is a passing league
A great PAss coverage lb is not coming off the field

I also think that the draft is full of players that are better than 90% of our roster

There are a few Good Teams have built the bulk of their rosters in a few drafts

These prospects are under a microscope
    their flaws are magnified
I don’t care if Scooby Wright has skinny legs…lol
Let me see what he does on the field

Can you argue that we would not have been better on defense if we drafted Kendricks or Perryman last year?

If some how we had an extra 2nd last year
Do we not take a player like that bc his skills might not translate at the next level?

I dont get your position at all
    They all have (prospects) warts
They all might not translate in the NFL
But you don’t have a shot at getting good players at the next level
If they weren’t good in college

    Hypothetically
If we had 11 picks in the first 2 rounds
    And spent everyone on defense
Almost every starters job would be in jeopardy
The early draft picks can usually play
    And often produce
As long as Ireland is not doing the drafting…

Look at the players we drafted in rounds 1 and 2 the last 2 years
Those guys have futures with the Dolphins

I would not concern yourself too much with the negative things scouts say about the early prospects
    They are looking for flaws

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I think we would have been better with a few of the LB’s in this draft, definitely.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Kendricks yes, Perryman was okay. But if we don’t have a pass rush none of the backend matters. Where are we getting a pass rush from right now?

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Our pass rush was actually not so bad
        Even after wake went down

I tend to agree with that

The thing about Jack and Ramsey
Who are both 2 of my favorites
Is right now they are highly ranked
But I’m not sure they don’t fall behind some of the other prospects based on position
The early part of the draft is often filled with QBs, CBS, OTs and pass rushers
And WRs to a certain extent
Safeties and LBs aren’t really viewed as premium positions

But for those two players – I see difference makers

LT BA missed 1st five weeks took till midseason to get up to speed at which point JJames went down for the seasons remainder, NEED a T or two, not two for tea !! Otherwise beyond DE (depending on OV/DS/CW), and OT, I LOVE the top 3 CB’s, and don’t hate MLB Reggie Ragland !! • 13kvFINS's avatar 13kvFINS says:

Pretty sure that Grimmeys wife will jump at the chance to get outta Miami, seeing that she can’t handle her booze in the parking lot and that’ll leave CB the top priority !! Like Alexander & Hargreaves too if Ramsey is gone !!

  49. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I’ve been saying for over a year that O-line needs help, and that we shouldn’t have counted on #76. I was right early in the year, and then it was James who went down. Having Fox as our swing tackle was a huge mistake. Just horrible depth at T. Our G’s weren’t any good either, so basically we threw a good T, and good C out there, and said work with it. We don’t have to take a T at #8, but if a great one was sitting there, I wouldn’t cry. I’d rather do that than have to make excuses about Tannehill, that guys are in the backfield before he has time to throw.

    • 13kvFINS's avatar 13kvFINS says:

I’ve long suggested that any two G’s should find the game relatively easy when surrounded by the healthy nucleus of BA, MP, & JJ, but the nucleus has only played together 5 times in two years, so who really knows what we have at G when said G’s have zero concerns about who’s at T or C… I like Billy Turner, DThomas’ confidence at G has been destroyed by being forced in and out of T positions.. Think that Turner & DThomas would be fine at G, IF EVER surrounded by BA, MP, & JJ !! But no doubt, we need T & G starting caliber depth, if not starters outright !!

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

It may be too early to say Billy Turner isn’t a starter, but Dallas Thomas has had a bunch of chances, and he seems to always fall flat. He could be a decent backup, but I think it’s time to realize DT isn’t starting material. You might be right about the unfortunate constant rotation with the tackles, but I also think it’s more likely we see Jamil Douglas at LG and either Turner or someone new at RG.

  50. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Grimes is just a good player in decline right now. He’s still probably better than anyone we currently have on the roster at CB, but $9.5M, not so sure.

I’ve been saying this for the better part of a decade. We had to go to the Wildcat in 2008 because we couldn’t run the ball effectively in the first two games. I honestly don’t care if we pick a guard at #8, I really don’t. We’ve been saying “we can pick one up to develop in the later rounds” for years now, and that hasn’t happened. If it helps fix our OL, and we can move him to LT once Albert leaves then I’m all for it.

Hargreaves is a very aggressive man player, can play press very well. I know piggy has his doubts but he has great instincts and closing suited for zone, he is very aggressive and can tightly shadow for press and he has great ball skills for making plays in man.

He only had a couple games this year he made aggressive mistakes. Unfortunately for him it was the last two of his college career, he went for the highlight reel move to jump the route on a double move and read wrong. That was like 2 plays though in otherwise great games in an otherwise great year.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

there seems to be a lot of momentum in Mackenzie Alexander as the best CB in the draft instead of Hargreaves

I don’t know about Stanley though…I don’t love that pick

but I really would prefer to focus on defense

I’ve been pretty high on the 2 OLBs lately – particularly Myles Jack
I tend to think Ramsey and Jack are likely to have the most immediate impact

  64. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Well Joe W is wrong. Pass rushers are the most important players on defense. If you don’t have that it doesn’t matter if you have a pro bowl secondary, guys will still get open.

I think pass rushers are the most important player too
I think CBs are a close 2nd though

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The problem is you don’t see a lot of great corners in the league because even if they are really good they’re at a disadvantage the way the rules are set up. The best way to slow down a passing attack is to attack it before the ball gets in the air.

  65. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    Yeah Tim
    I agree

when it comes down to it, in the league today you need big plays on defense
You need negative yardage to stop a drive
and that’s what you get out of the pass rush
sacks are far more common than interceptions and its always been that way

if you can get a 2nd down sack
its much more likely to stop a team from scoring than a 2nd down pass break up

Teams are going to move the ball under the current rules

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Exactly! It seemed like we were all set up with a pass rush this year and then they got off to a horrible start, then Wake went nuts and we were leading the league in sacks during a 5 game span, then Wake went down and the pass rush struggled again. It was very up and down all year and now we really don’t know what our DE situation will be like with FA and Wake’s Achilles. All I know if you go into the season with a sup par pass rush the defense is going to struggle.

      • ukfinfan's avatar ukfinfan says:

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Of course you want good corners, but pressure helps corners contest more passes. It is really hard for guys to cover these days. You can’t breathe on them without getting a flag. So you have to bomb the launcher. LOL

    speaking of CBs
the other Clemson CB (Cordrea Tankersly) is and interesting prospect
I don’t think he has decided whether he is going to come out or not
but if he does he is probably a day 2 pick
    maybe even a 4th or 5th rounder

    I like Tankersly a lot
He is very good in run support
he is not as touted as Alexander

Clemson is always stacked with talent

drafting a guy like Tankersly a little later in the draft
fits the model of drafting guys who can contribute right away
    big school
big time competition at the highest level in college

There are a couple of small school guys I like
but for the most part I want to draft like the bengals or the steelers have
and try to go after big school guys
some times the 2nd best CB at a big school is significantly better than the best guys at other schools

if nothing more – guys like that are probably ready to compete at the next level

    • D's avatar D says:

Tankersly looked bad in the championship game, but overall he looks like a solid candidate and i like he’s got some size to him. Id be ok with him in a later round if it just doesnt work out for us to get Hargreaves, but i think if we lose Grimes (which i believe is going to happen), we either need a guy like Hargreaves in the first, OR get a FA like Janoris Jenkins and then draft a guy in a later round. If it worked out that we got Janoris Jenkins, drafted Ramsey, and then picked up Tankersly later, id be pretty ok with that outcome.

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I don’t think he looked bad
late in the game it looked like he was the only one making plays

    • D's avatar D says:

I dont think Tankersly looked awful, but he had some coverage misses. Im not putting a lot on that game either, Derek Henery was responsible for most of the secondary miscues because they had to be so flipping concerned with him getting loose. No way those guys stop Henry 1 on 1 so they had to make decisions on playing run early so they could assist with making tackles. Kearse was responsible with one of the TD to Howard, he came up and played run, Howard got behind them, TD. Still i mean whats your poison there, if he doesnt react to run on a formation they had be successfully running out of all night, Henry gets loose and runs by him like he did on the first TD. He had a really hard assignment that night. I still consider Kearse a solid SS candidate, but im not as desperate to get him over other candidates now. I have kinda fallen back to Jalen Mills as my primary fallback FS target.

If we didnt need LB and DE so bad i would easily have us going CB/FS 1 and 2. Either Hargreaves with Mills/Kearse or Ramsey with Will Redmond, Desmond King (if he falls that far), or maybe Fuller if his injury pushes him down that far.

Id be afraid to do that though considering i think we would miss out on too many top ILB/DE prospects.

    —————————————————
Its literally coming from last two games (SEC Championship game and the Citrus Bowl). He has been raved about by just about everyone right up until those games, and i watched those games (of course) and he only had a couple real breakdowns in coverage. Both were double move routes where either he though he had safety help over the top of the coverage and played the break in the route, or he just flat out was trying to be too agressive and make too good of an impression and unfortunately was wrong. He has characteristically been much more solid tha those games and what i saw was just trying too hard to make big plays. Both games too were games where the defense knew it had to get some turnovers because the offense was playing so poorly. He jumped the route, and was wrong…..2 times.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

its an example of why I say you have to dismiss some of the negative stuff scouts say about players

The more coveted a player is – the more intense the scrutiny gets

Its almost impossible to remain the most highly touted CB in college for a year

Sure the draft is full of busts and guys ho can’t do it on the next level
but scouts have never been good at predicting that

there are trends in the draft as to who is hot and who is not
and right now Hargreaves is not

but its odd to me that people are eager to disregard what the guys did most of the last 2 years based on what he did the last few weeks of his career – but that is the draft for you

Its like every scout wants to be the first scout to highlight some one weaknesses
They want to be able to say “I said he would struggle in the NFL first”

I really think that sort of draft mentality is why there are so many busts and so many misses

  69. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

UK, with all the spread formations and motion it’s not as easy to jam guys within 5 yards. If it was every team would do it. Just remember if the corner misses and the WR gets past him it’s a big gain.

  70. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    and for the record
both you and I liked Stefon Diggs a lot last year
and he had a very good season for the Vikings
720 yards for a 5th rounder as a rookie is impressive

and Diggs is an example of that weird draft trend bs

I mentioned Diggs after the 2014 draft as one of the top rated WRs coming out in 2015
then all of the sudden in the 2014 year he drops and drops and drops

and obviously he was still a good prospect
the hype with Stefon Diggs just wasn;t timed right….lol

  71. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

It’s also really hard to evaluate some of these college defenders. Both Clemson and Alabama have really good defenses and look at what the score was. The way the game is played it’s really difficult to defend all the stuff offenses do.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I think you evaluate the prospect and not so much the team stats

you look for a guy that catches your eye here and there
I kind of expected a high scoring game
its always a high scoring game with Clemson

Alabama generally is not involved in those kind of games
but the SEC plays a little more pro style than some of the top teams in other conferences

Alabama IMO is one of the hardest teams to evaluate
bc they are stacked with talent – and talent up front
they are about to put a bunch of DL in the NFL
after putting a bunch of OL in the NFL

they’ve put some disappointments at RB int he NFL in the past
and those guys probably feasted on a dominant OL in college

So I wonder this years if the LBs are not so good

  72. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

No draft prospect is perfect, so I totally agree with what you’re saying. Look at Leonard Williams, who was unanimously the safest pick and the most talented player in the draft. He played on a very talented DL with the Jets, and he was OK, but not great. He may eventually get there, but he was not a dominant player.

Actually, I do like Mackensie Alexander a lot. He plays very physical. The only knock would be his height, but you could say the same for Hargreave’s size. He’s probably a very close 2nd. Unfortunately, Desmond King kinda hurt my mock draft of taking DE in the 1st and CB early 2nd.
I also love Cameron Sutton’s upside. Though I’m not sure if he’s coming out or not.

Stanley would be my choice if Tunsil, Ramsey, Lawson, and Hargreave’s were off the board. He’s very solid and should be very good at LT for the next 10 years. But he’s definitely not the prospect Tunsil is. …Tunsil is elite IMO. I personally like the second tier guys like Conklin, Decker, and Spriggs in a trade down late 1st/early 2nd too. But we can’t wait too long if we want a LT in this draft.

I personally don’t like the idea of drafting anyone in the 1st round coming off a knee injury. With that said, Myles Jack was the guy I mentioned wanting to draft in 2016 as soon as the 2015 draft was over. Love the player, hate the injury. So I probably wouldn’t take him or Jaylon Smith early. …Trade down in the first and pick up another mid 2nd rounder then we can talk.😉

  74. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

rgs, I wouldn’t touch Jaylon Smith. He probably won’t be ready to play much or all of the 2016 season. Jack’s injury happened earlier and he’s probably almost done with his rehab. We’ll see if he participates at the combine or has a pro day. His injury was also an MCL not an ACL that requires 4-6 months, not 9-12 like an ACL.

  75. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

For me 1-2 need to start or play significantly and make an impact. 3 can be a solid backup and STs developmental player and 4-7 compete for roster spots.

With our team, we have a lot of young players who need to take the next step. Guys who have been here a couple of years and haven’t done enough are running out of time.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Yeah, that’s about right. It could help a lot if we could get quality production from our 1st 2-3 picks. We did get that last year with James and Landry, but this year Devante wasn’t ready until late season, Jordan Phillips was a nice player in the rotation on the D-line, and Jamil Douglas got playing time (Although it wasn’t always pretty), and McCain and Ajayi both played a fair amount, so not too bad.

I like Shaq a lot, but i dont see him as an 8th overall selection. I think Hargreaves is top for me at 8, followed by Ramsey. Lawson is a stud, i like him best i think above all other DE prospects, but he and Bullard are pretty close, and they are only slightly more appealing than Buckner, Ogbah, Calhoun, Floyd and Nkemdiche, infact id be really pushing for Nkemdiche over all of them if he hadnt gone full tard and pulled the stunt that got him suspended from the bowl game. Nkemdiche is the better talent of all of them i just worry about where his head is an how serious he really takes his profession now. Back to topic though, Shaq isnt so much better than all of them than to secure a player at another position that is a shallower pool of talent.

Id trade back if Ramsey and Hargreaves are off the board personally. Trade back and then take either a DE (any of the ones i listed above but in that order) or Ragland. Im not a fan of Jack and his injury concerns me. I really dont wanna go 1st round on a guy we arent certain of, so that unfortunately would include Fuller as well.

Perkins: #Dolphins should draft Alabama RB Derrick Henry in first round http://bit.ly/1n0KTG5

@chrisperk Do they drug screen over there?

Perfect example of why Perkins is a novice when it comes to the NFL. I watched a video of him Hyde and Omar the other day and it was like watching The View, I couldn’t get through it. LOL

Chris Perkins at the SS is a freaking idiot. he’s worse than Omar. (that is saying something!)

Alabama running back Derrick Henry, the Heisman Trophy winner, has declared himself eligible for the NFL Draft, according to a report. I’d like to see the Dolphins take him with the No. 8 pick.

It’s the best thing the Dolphins could do to help quarterback Ryan Tannehill and their struggling offense.

NO the best thing the dolphins could do to help the struggling offense would be to fix the god damn offensive line. You do not take running backs in the first round unless they are Adrian Peterson type backs and there is really no way of knowing that from college.

Harvey is also an I-formation back, he needs some time to get going. AP is the same where lines up 8 yards deep in the backfield. I doubt we’re going to use the I-formation as a staple of our offense.

If Harvey was there in the 2nd rd I would think about it. He is a hammer with speed. Only if we lose Miller though. If we bring Miller back I like him and Ajayi.

How much of a student of the game is CB Mackensie Alexander? He has a notebook of notes on every WR he’s ever faced, including, …

Rob Proffitt ‏@BreakinDownFilm 3h3 hours ago
Clemson WRs he faced in practice Martavis Bryant & Sammy Watkins because he knew he would face them again in the NFL.

    Good morning.
    More prospects entering draft.
    I LOVE IT
Henry in the 2nd RD if he makes it 🙂 that is all.
TOP 10? LMFAO! fuck that :). He’s not Todd Gurley or Adrian Pederson. His body can’t take that grind or is he that physically challenging to opposing defenders. He is benefiting from a strong OL scheme at Bama.

    Tim,
Just read that the story of a Hedge Fund manager being the California winner is a false story.

Vontaze Burfict may single-handedly keep the Steelers out of the Super Bowl. He injured Antonio Brown, Le’Veon Bell and Ben Roethlisberger.

RIP Grizzly Adams. I actually used to like that show when I was a kid. That raises the disturbing question of why?
