The Wedge Scouting Report: Su’a Cravens, Safety/LB

Oh those Pesky Belusian Gopher Flies!  Like any good intergalactic agent – I shoot a photon missile directly at a planet.  I know its not the most creative way to destroy a planet…but I love watching the way the planet explodes.

Except mid air…out of nowhere a Gopher Fly grabs the missile and takes it away before it makes contact.  Light years away I see an explosion in the direction the fly went.

That must be what a pick six feels like.

space-explosion

Then days later…I found out that one of the Alpha Alien’s favorite vacation moons has exploded after it was hit by MY MISSILE!

And who gets blamed for that!

I don’t even know what those pests are…are they a rodent or an insect…

kinda reminds of some of the prospects I can’t place

SuaCravens4

Su’a Cravens is a fascinating prospect.  In his freshmen year Cravens played Safety for USC, then USC switched him to Linebacker.

At both positions he excelled at USC.

So which is he in the NFL?

Well, I’ve seen him called the next Troy Polamalu.

And I think he fits the mold of a safety.

SuaCravens3

But not everyone agrees.  In fact I’m hearing a lot of NFL scouts are projecting him at Linebacker in the NFL.  Which surprises me.  But what do I know – I’m not even from your miserable planet.

Could it be that Cravens fits the mold of the new NFL pass covering linebacker?  Seems like this sort of Linebacker is more and more what the NFL wants out of the position in a pass happy NFL.

Cravens may not be the best coverage linebacker in the draft this year, that honor probably goes to his instate rival Myles Jack.  But Cravens is one of the best available this year and one of the best I can remember.

13.usc.1108.per_.jpg

But that is not the only thing Cravens did at USC.  Cravens had over 200 tackles in 3 years at USC.  He forced 4 fumbles and had over 10 sacks in the last two years while playing linebacker.  So this guy is pretty versatile and makes impact plays.

But how about those 9 career interceptions NFL scouts?  Don’t tell me that is not a safety I see in the field!

Well, scouts counter that by mentioning Cravens’ lack of speed.  In fact he is not expected to run a very fast 40 yard dash at the combine.

But then again, if Cravens runs a fast 40, I wonder if the Cravens at safety talk picks up?

sua Cravens2

I expect Cravens to be picked int he first two rounds of the NFL draft.  There is even some talk he may go in the first round, but it’s too early to know.

What I do know is that Su’a Cravens reminds me of one of the pesky Belusian Gopher Flies.  That son of a bitch will pick it off and take it back for a touchdown! That’s his alien weapon of destruction!

CravensGopher

You can watch his highlights here to see what I mean

The salary cap is so confusing. It appears from the chart on over the cap. Calm that we can carry over 9.3 million from last year and that we are approximately 9.1 million over the cap this year which mean anything weird by cutting players moving forward would be a net add to our salary cap. But there are so many conflicting reports out there it’s hard to be sure. It’s a good thing the team has somebody who’s in charge of this stuff!

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

      LOL – That’s the mellow version of overthecap.com 🙂

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

It’s really not that confusing, don’t consume yourself by the details of the cap, just go to a sight like http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/miami-dolphins/cap/ and use their figures. What you need to know about the cap is you can carry over some number, which is close to $20 mil, from the previous yr, if you choose to, by letting the league know on some designated date towards the end of each yr. A bonus paid can be prorated over the length of the contract. Dead money counts only when you release a player that has bonus money already paid by not figured into a yrs salary cap. That’s basically it.

As for the $9.1 mil over the cap that’s for the 2016 salaries using the 2015 cap figure of $143 mil. Estimated 2016 cap is $153 mil, so that puts us $1 mil under, then the recent cuts of Coples and McCain puts us $11 mil under. Suh is going to be paid this yrs salary in a bonus, which will save us $19 mil, so we’re looking at having $30 mil to work with, additionally they can cut or rework other contracts.

Speaking of that person, I’m glad Aponte stayed. She has nothing to do with who gets the money, but she does a great job of distributing it.

Wow…never had heard about any of this. Maybe Peyton isn’t as squeaky clean as it seems. Probably would have been much different had facebook and twitter existed at the time. If you’re caught in a lie about one thing, anything you say can be questioned. Makes me wonder about the HGH or whatever it was that was shipped to him.

When it suits their agenda, but when the truth is bent by someone else these same people cry bloody murder.

As for Peyton, of course he took something, but if he had admitted it before the SB he wouldn’t have been able to play.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

As for Peyton’s sexual assault case in college, I heard about it a couple of weeks before the SB. Really strange how the story didn’t get bigger legs.

  9. sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

The report about college comes up every couple of years but it gets quickly denounced bc of the image they built for Peyton. Just like everything else in regards to him. People want to believe their sports heroes are flawless and have their kids look up to them for some reason. Heck there are still middle aged men who look to players half their age just bc they can play a sport.

The Peyton story was widely reported years back. There were significant factual discrepancies in the plaintiff’s account. I think ultimately it settled.

    • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

Correct Ken. This was known at draft time . This entire piece is being treated as breaking news by the biggest Race Baiter on Social Media, Shaun King. This is only pulled from the archives because the “Black QB” didn’t win the super bowl. Shaun King is well known sack of shit who constantly fabricates stories to push the race envelope.

  12. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Of course there were. She (Aponte) really does a great job. Sometimes I’ve thought that maybe she should pick the players. lol

  13. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Last year, the “black QB” didn’t win either, but I suppose that “black QB” won already, so it didn’t matter. Actually, it’s funny how that “back QB” didn’t create a controversy at all. Hmm, maybe it’s just this years “black QB” is an ass!

    • bookman11's avatar bookman11 says:

Yeah, because this year’s “black QB” had to tell all of us unwashed how we have never seen a “black QB” like him before….I am so, so glad he let us know he was black……why the “F” did he even make that qualifier?

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

The same reason he does everything else, to bring attention to himself. Do we need to know any more than he named his son Chosen? The poor kid has to go through life with that name, but Cam doesn’t care, because its all about Cam.

When the media brought to our attention all the BS about how he celebrates on the field, I wrote it off and was backing Cam, when they said he should’ve fallen on the fumble towards the end of the game I backed him (thinking I want to see the replay before I decide, because a football doesn’t bounce like a basketball, he could’ve been timing the hop), until I heard his BS excuse about hurting his leg.

Now I’m starting to really hate him, because he’s acting like a pompous jerk.

Likewise their are middle aged men eager to tear down sports stars

    I don’t get either poc

Fans aren’t building relationships with athletes when they watch them. They are just watching the game. I really don’t get all the Cam Newton bashing. Who cares about his personality? He just plays a game we all like to watch.

Everyone lost their mind, everyone being the media, because his demeanor on the field was an issue before the game. There’s nothing here write about something else.

Comparing things these two have done during their careers is like comparing stats, or like they said on the radio this morning stats are like bikinis they reveal some things, but what they don’t reveal is the important part.

I remember reading that Peyton story before

I do think there is a double standard with Cam
But I see no reason to tear other guys down

I don’t understand why peoyou or are so eager to tear any athletes down
So I don’t get the Cam bs at all
The guy had a great year and is an exceptional football player
I think the panthers will be a good team for a while

Why does it surprise you that people care about sports stars personalities? It’s what separates them from everyone else. Some have a personality you can identify or appreciate, and some have one you just can’t stand, like Cam, Brandon Marshall and others like them. If Brandon Marshall wasn’t an asshole, wouldn’t he still be here?

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Peyton was all of what 18 when the joke turned into a BS assault happened.

    • herdfan's avatar herdfan says:

I really have nothing to say if you think that would be considered funny, which is what a joke is intended to be. If it had been me, he would have had to answer no the next time someone asked him if he had any balls.

    • herdfan's avatar herdfan says:

And he was 18, an adult according to the laws of the land. Old enough to know better.

So if I’m reading this correctly you aren’t saying it didn’t happen. It is just that he should be allowed to do that because he is young and stupid and has the mistaken idea that it’s funny?

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Peyton should’ve been arrested for what he did, no question, but he was important to the U of Tenn, and they got it buried.

Of course it was wrong what he did (he probably thought it was funny), and maybe even worse to treat her the way he did in his book. I brought up the fact that he was 18, because he was just a kid, I’m pretty sure he’s learned from it, why bring it up 20 yrs later? You bring it up 20 yrs later, because you (Shaun King) have an agenda and this is a little evidence to back up your opinion .

The act itself isn’t what is in question, any reasonable adult, Peyton included, will tell you it was wrong. Maybe she overreacted, maybe not (I’m not judging her or her action), but if she had just laughed it off she wouldn’t have been fired from 2 colleges, and had to deal with the humiliation that she did. We’re talking about college, I’m sure this type of thing happens all the time, and I’m pretty sure no one (that laughed it off)that has had that done to them has lost any sleep, because of the nightmares it caused.

Again, I’m not saying it wasn’t wrong, I’m just saying sometimes people make too big a deal of things that are really harmless. Only she can answer the question of was this harmless. She’s sort of in the medical field, I’m sure that’s not the worst thing she’s seen or had done to her.

It’s really not that different from any whistle blower in a corporation, sure there’s things happen all the time that aren’t right, that people with power get away with, but when you blow the whistle you have to know it’s not going to be pretty at times, and you have to be prepared to be the one alienated or humiliated, so my question, was it really worth it? Life isn’t fair and it’s not always about who is right.

  24. bookman11's avatar bookman11 says:

Opinions about what athletes do on and foo the field and how they carry themselves has been going on forever. It is just magnified now because of social media. I remember when Don Strock was let go, Dan Marino stormed out of the Dolphins facility and that was reported in the newspaper.
I personally do not believe any athlete is immune to it, and for them it comes with the territory, particularly in the NFL if you are a QB.

As fans we chose who we like and don’t like based on our own set of values…I personally do not like the way Cam handles himself, and as a football fan, that is part of the total experience. It may not appear to be fair..or it may be in some peoples opinions “BS”, but there are probably athletes others hate that I do not. No big deal, just part of being a fan.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Exactly. It’s also funny how the same people that probably think we’re wrong for bashing Cam call Tannehill “Opie” and say he says “Aw shucks” when we don’t win, but that’s fine, because after all, he’s a “white QB”, and the QB for our team, so we may as well bash him. Now the Carolina Panthers QB, no bashing allowed. Comical!

      • bookman11's avatar bookman11 says:

        Yep

And don’t get me wrong, I don’t think there is a right or wrong, but I think you have to be able to accept it both ways…we will never all see athletes the same..LOL

      • bookman11's avatar bookman11 says:

        Oh…and Cam is a petulant douche…LOL!

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Cam is a douche and so is Manziel, just not in the same way. I don’t care for either of them, and I used to like them both. For Cam it’s fine, if he wants to do all the parading around, but he better expect to get shit when he screws up. It’s just human nature to hate people that tell you how great they are.

  25. finfanrob's avatar finfanrob says:

so cam bashing is frowned upon here but crawling up his ass and worshiping him is highly valued.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

When you think not bashing him is crawling up his ass you have truly lost perspective

By the way, in case you haven’t noticed I am clearly outnumbered
Bashing cam newton will lead to a lot more support from most here than not doing it

So it’s hardly frowned upon bc I stated my opinion

I know your style of debate is to highlight extremes of an argument
But the guy had an MVP year and that can’t be denied
You can’t say he is not a good football player
He earned respect as a football player
I don’t care about his personality
I don’t care about an athletes personalities

That’s not crawling up his ass

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

      We discussed it last offseason

I doubt that story ever goes away

I’m a fan of Peyton manning
Most of his career he has been a class act
      But no one is perfect
      And it’s really that simple

He happened to be a young kid in college when social media did not report every detail

So the story went under the rug at the time
Only to find its way out years later

  29. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I do not agree that the personality of athletes is part of the game or being a fan

I think it’s the roller coaster ride the media takes fans on to stay relevant

You guys have know me long enough to hear my arguments on this subject
I’ve made similar arguments amount Lebron James and Dawn Aponte

    It’s just petty IMO

I wrote that piece about 5 people you will meet at the Super Bowl
And i mentioned “just let him play” being the dialogue when it came to can Newton
I expected the panthers to win
That would have been the dialogue if the panthers won

Instead it’s about what a bad person cam newton is

And I made the same type of arguments when the media was assailing dawn aponte as some sort of Shakespearean femme fatale

Cam newton public persona is based on whether he won or lost the Super Bowl
But the reality is plenty If good people have lost the Super Bowl
And plenty of bad people have won it

I don’t know if joe montana is a good guy
Or Jim Kelly is a bad guy
I think they are both good football players
And I think Montana is a better football player than kelly
But that’s all I like to think about based in winnig or losing games
    Not who the player is

Why is everyone still discussing Cam’s attitude? I thought that died days ago.

Peyton has been made fun of his entire career for the size of his forehead and being a country bumpkin. He’s revered for his body of work and outstanding career, not that he’s the coolest guy or whatever.

Some fans think we are the only team that ever draft injured players

I do think there was was a double standard with Peyton. I think they let him off the hook for it though they did focus on it a bit for a couple days after the Superbowl he did that in. I don’t however think the double standard has anything to do with Peyton being white or Cam being black but more because Peyton is the glory boy of the NFL and Cam is a youngin with a history of immaturity, something I think most the year he seemed t be overcoming. The media is making it a black white issues to get clicks that part is true

I can’t blame Cam (or anyone else) for walkin-out on the press while being asked stupid questions while the winners are hootin and hollerin within earshot between stupid questions after one of the most disappointing days of one’s life !! Think of your own most disappointing moments, you want people in your face asking you why it happened while the benificiaries of your loss are whoopin-it-up, or do you just want to void yourself of the surroundings and be left alone ?? Shoot, as just a mere fan of my favorite team that may have just lost a game of zero importance, I don’t want to be around (anyone that might say the wrong thing), and I most definitely will not subject myself to the victors rubbin it in my face (without fightin) !! I think that Cam was right in walkin-out rather than snappin at the world, and that whoever set up that joint press conference amongst the winners and losers being in the same room must be out of their minds!! Now he’s a Pro, but I can’t find what he did to be wrong under such circumstances, and I’m sure that the results would have been different had he not been subjected to endure Denver’s excitement while dealing with his own pain!! I’d have done the same as Cam, otherwise I’d have snapped !! I HATE LOSING something in games or life in general no-matter the significance, Disappointment hurts, don’t want folks in my face, don’t want to be asked why, don’t want to be consoled, don’t want to be poked and prodded, and don’t want to be a part of some else’s jubilation, I’ll deal with it “”My Own Way”” !! 42: R2P11 DT ROBERT NKEMDICHE OLE MISS – BPA with elite ability to play anywhere on the DL.

73: R3P10 C NICK MARTIN NOTRE DAME – depth behind Pouncey who has been banged up in recent years, allows Douglas to focus strictly on guard.

147: R5P8 CB DEIONDRE’ HALL NORTHERN IOWA – a rangy DB with CB/S projection, needs development.

189: R6P11 OLB DE’VONDRE CAMPBELL MINNESOTA – a rangy OLB/DE prospect with athletic ability, needs development.

I have no racist tones or anger in my dislike for Cam, I just think he’s a punk, and that game revealed what a punk he is. He didn’t put that team on his back, rather he threw them under the bus when asked what went wrong. “Dropped passes, allowed too many sacks, errant passes”. It’s no coincidence the first 2 things he mentioned were dropped passes and sacks allowed. He’s a classic “ME” player, and his teammates surely took notice of that.

You keep thinking he’s a great QB, he’s just on a very good team. It’s hilarious that you completely overlook the rest of his career, when he wasn’t even a top 10 QB. Last year he was 5-8-1, and The great Derek Anderson was 2-0 and got them into the playoffs, with a better QBR by far than Cam in those 2 games. Listen, I know the kid has talent, he;s big, strong and fast, but his heart, and his punk-ass mind, you can have it!

Some day, hopefully Tannehill has as good a supporting cast as Cam, and then we’ll see how good he can be. So far, he hasn’t had anything close. It’s not just criticism of Tannehill, I’ve done it too, we all have, but it’s the assault on his personality that he just doesn’t care as much as Cam that pisses me off no end. It’s total bullshit, that kid scrapes himself off the turf and tries his hardest every game, he just doesn’t have the team around him to accomplish what Cam finally did this year.

Piggy, I have avoided this argument (discussion) because as everyone is aware I’m an unrepentant homer. But I have to agree with Mike on this one. Your “defense” of Cam is a bit over the top. Not in the same atmosphere? Not even close? Take at look at their combined totals for the first 4 years of their careers. (Passing totals only, we are talking QB, not running back)

    Cam had the following;
1,144 completions on 1,923 attempts, 59.475 completion percent. averaged 20.5 TD’s and had an 85.4 rating.

    Tannehill had;
    1,392 completions on 2,238 attempts 61.9 completion perrcent. Averaged 21.75 TD’s and had a 85.2 rating.

Both averaged 13.5 Ints per season while Tannehill was sacked 32 more times over the first four years than Cam.

I am in no way saying Tanny is better than Cam. But your stance that Tannehill is nowhere near as good as Cam doesn’t pan out. They are NEARLY IDENTICAL in stats over the first four years of their careers.

By the way, 18,000 yards is great. Tannehill is 1,034 yards ahead of Cam at the same point in their careers and is better across the board in most stats at the same point in their careers, but keep saying how one is nowhere as close as to good as the other.

I await your reply of excuses for Cam that do not excuse Tannehill.

My big problem with Brady is cheating and manipulating of the rules in general
He is one of the players responsible for changing the way the game is played – for the worse IMO

It’s much different than cam newton IMO
To me that is about football
The ego stuff with cam newton is not about football at all
It’s just not liking a personality and trying to project that on to football

I think Cam & Brady both are disliked & liked for their personalities on the field of play. The general public will refer to both guys as assholes for their sulking ways on the bench when losing, when they don’t handle pressers great, & for over exuberant celebrations.

Listen, I don’t hate Cam at all, but I’ll tell you personalities can rub people in the wrong way more so than a persons race. If you were to take a poll of the general football populace outside of Massachusetts Brady would be labeled the biggest asshole walking in the game today not Cam.

Tannehill had a very good RB we hardly used, 1 very good WR, and 2 eh WR”s for most of the year until Parker was healthy. He had a sieve for an O-line and defense, so compared to what Cam had, plus playing in a weaker division and conference, it doesn’t stack up.

  85. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    I looked at it up
Based on the comparisons you guys think are reasonable
I thought I was going crazy and maybe Tannehill is actually close to newton

And Cam Newton had 48 MVP votes this year
    Ryan Tannehill had 0

Maybe 0 has a different meaning On this blog too
But is usually means none in the real world

    Keep dreaming guys

Here is a photo of a unicorn puking a rainbow to summarize my thoughts on Tannehill fantasies of who he is

I hope Tannehill turns into a good qb

But right now the comparison is outlandish

  86. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

So, Piggy you don’t want to respond telling us all exactly how Cam is light years better than Tannehill? I guess it is because Tannehill has never had to face adversity, him being white and all, in a league that is 70% minority.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

      Bc he was the MVP
      In the super bowl
He had 50 TDs this year

I can’t argue that the sky is above your head when you are standing on your head

      The evidence is obvious
In fact the MVP voters agree

You have to be kidding me with this argument
You are blinded by your homerism

under used Miller and Jarvis Landry. OK, who else? Mostly injured, under used Parker? Give me another…

    *****
    Stills to start
    Underutilized as well
    Same with Cameron
Matthews was good before he was injured
And Parker just took his place and was good

The weapons On The Dolphins weren’t the problem this year

Cam newton lost kelvin benjamin before the season and kept producing

I await your argument bashing stills Cameron and the rest of our team except for Tannehill
I guess “homers” are fine criticizing other players if they are defending Tannehill

    • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

I think the simplest argument for the players that mentioned above is piss poor game planning partnered with horrible OL affected everyone.

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

        Those things are true
But I think the qb play was also substandard irrespective of those things
Point is – we had good weapons available in 2015

      • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

I disagree 100%. You can’t have horrible OL play and crap game planning and expect a QB to excel.

One year doesn’t define a career. Cam, like Rock and I have said, was either a little better or a little worse before this season. Everything broke right, and he had a great year. We’ll see if he goes back to what he was before this year. No one thought and no one (except Son) that cam was great before this season, he was never mentioned among the league best QB’s. Maybe the teams in the Panthers shitty division get better, and the Panthers take a step backwards.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Okay I guess his ncaa championship, heisman trophy, rookie of the year trophy or 3x pro bowl selection all happened this season

I must be using the wrong calendar

I also missed that he is 2nd ever in most games with 3tds passing and 1 rushing TD. Behind HOFer Steve young and tied with HOFer Frank Tarkenton

Or that he is 2nd all time in rushing TDs for a qb

Or that he is 3rd in total TDs for a career all time

Or 4th for most combined yards by a qb in his first 5 years

I suspect we might end up having more to spend that we expect, mainly cause some “names” won’t be back.

Haven’t you been paying attention 😉

After Suh’s reworked contract we’ll be $30 mil under the cap.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

No I haven’t been paying attention……life’s been a bit busy. And of course they can renegotiate to create room. And Suh would be the 800lb gorilla when it comes to that.

My guess is they could clear $100 mil if they wanted, just like any team. Long as they want to make a deal with Bat for a suite in cap hell though. 🙂

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

There’s a clause in suhs contract that allows them to spread the $ he was supposed to get in 2016 towards the back

Which going to open up a lot of salary cap room

You keep thinking he’s a great QB, he’s just on a very good team. It’s hilarious that you completely overlook the rest of his career, when he wasn’t even a top 10 QB.
    ———————————————
Mike you’re delusional. Cam’s supporting cast was so bad on O, that before the season started they didn’t know how they were going to score any points. He made Ginn a decent stat receiver with 10 TDs, He was their O, between the read option ability to keep plays alive.

When/if RT has a yr anything close to the one Cam just had will you be talking about all his previous yrs when he was less than stellar? The point is the previous yrs don’t matter now for Cam, he’s a great QB now.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

      Be careful

You may be accus e of being up Newtons ass

    • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

Let’s correct something. Cam’s WRs were subpar this year. Everything else on that O was top notch. Great OL, Great TE, Very good stable of backs, very good OC. This isn’t to say Cam didn’t play great this year, he did.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I wouldn’t go as far as saying the offensive line was great. You can look at all the stats you want to, but that Oline was what they were, because Cam was the QB. I don’t even think Olsen is great, he’s very good, but great is Gronk, whom he is not even close to. RBs are you kidding me? You put RT in this offense and we’d be saying the same thing as we were with our team, if only he had a good team around him…

Mike Shula isn’t a good OC, he proved that in the SB, his inability to adjust cost them big time.

Can Newton, the “punk” records as of nov 2015

    http://blackandbluereview.com/cam-newton-rising-in-nfl-record-books/

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

He’s a punk. Would you hear any other great QB say “We dropped too many passes, gave up too many sacks” etc . . . He’s a punk, a “ME” person, and I can guarantee you he rubs a lot of teammates the wrong way. Just watch when something goes wrong how they come out of the wood works. He’s the man now, but watch and see . . . .

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Cam Newton is the new RGIII, he’s as punk as they get. I don’t like him for that reason, he’s the epitome of the me generation, but you can’t take away from him the season he had leading up to the SB. In a society loves the underdog, we also hate the self promoter.
