WHY I’M NOT HAPPY WITH STEVE ROSS (AND HOW TO FIX THE MESS HE CREATED)

by Randy Campbell (OLD DOLFAN), season ticket holder

From 1970 through 2001, the Miami Dolphins were one of the most successful franchises in the history of the National Football League. They played in the postseason on 22 occasions during those 32 seasons, reaching the Super Bowl five times. Their back-to-back Super Bowl victories following the 1972 and 1973 seasons, during which they compiled an NFL record of 32-2, stands as the historical high point of the franchise. During those 32 years the Dolphins won 335 games, lost 191 and tied 2 for a winning percentage of 63.6%. Best of all, only TWO of those 32 seasons were losing seasons.

Head Coach Nick Saban’s final season in Miami (2006) featured a 6-10 season. Saban left Miami for the top job at Alabama in early 2007. He was replaced by Charger’s offensive coordinator Cam Cameron. Cameron’s one year stint as head coach produced a disastrous 1-15 season. A disheartened Wayne Huizenga decided to sell the Dolphins to New York real estate mogul Steve Ross. (Note that Cameron had no prior head coaching experience, a theme of the Ross years.)

Ross’s first season as owner (2008) was a success. The release of quarterback Chad Pennington by the Jets gave director of football operations Bill Parcells a chance to bring the highly rated Pennington to Miami. And a season ending injury to Tom Brady during the first quarter of New England’s first game provided Miami another chance to succeed. They subsequently won the AFC Eastern Division before getting blown out by the Ravens in the playoffs. More dark clouds were on the horizon.

Next season, Pennington suffered a serious injury to his passing arm. His career was nearing an end. And Parcells, unhappy with the direction of the franchise, later walked out the door. Ross turned to GM Jeff Ireland to run the franchise while also relying on the advice of ex-Chiefs GM “King” Carl Peterson. What followed was a seven year run of failure. Seven years without a single winning season, an all-time record for the franchise. After going to the playoffs in 22 of their first 32 seasons in the NFL, the Dolphins failed to win a single playoff game for 15 consecutive seasons! And, under Steve Ross, Miami is 49-64 over the last seven seasons.

And you wonder why I’m NOT happy with Steve Ross?? Well, get ready all you Kool-Aid drinkers. Here come some of my reasons for not liking Ross’s stewardship of the franchise, along with a list of recommendations on how to fix the situation.

THE FRONT OFFICE: The Tuna, Bill Parcells, was a holdover VP of football operations from the Huizenga era. Ross decided to keep not only Parcells but also GM Jeff Ireland and head coach Tony Sparano. All of these choices were poor ones. It was Parcells who oversaw the firing of Cameron and the hiring of Ireland and Sparano. His decision to hire Ireland & Sparano will go down as two of the worst hires in Dolphin history. The fact that Ross approved all of these moves makes him culpable. The fact that Ross later extended the contracts and gave raises to Ireland and Sparano (before firing them) makes Ross look like a football idiot!!

Ross’s hiring of Mike Dee as Dolphins’ CEO in 2009 is another head scratcher. Dee, a former COO of the Boston Red Sox, came to Miami with NO FOOTBALL QUALIFICATIONS TO RUN A FOOTBALL FRANCHISE!! In 2013, Dee failed miserably to get $350 million in public tax money to upgrade Sun Baked Stadium. In the process, Dee pissed-off major Republican leaders in Tallahassee. His failure to get this upgrade funding ultimately defeated Miami’s bids to host Super Bowl 50 and/or SB 51. Currently, Dee is CEO of the San Diego Padres.

Two years ago, Ross hired ex-Buccaneers’ assistant GM Dennis Hickey to be the next GM of the Dolphins. The jury is still out on Hickey, who was recently fired by Ross. I believe his two drafts for Miami were better than most of Jeff Ireland’s drafts. But Hickey’s status became moot when fired Jets’ GM Mike Tannenbaum was hired by Ross to oversee football operations in 2015. “T-Baum was seen in a heated debate with Hickey during last year’s draft. Few doubted that T-Baum had the final say on who was selected, making Hickey’s status very shaky.

Ross’s choice of Tannenbaum is yet ANOTHER poor selection on his part. T-Baum’s last two years in New York were a disaster (details too nauseous to repeat here). Suffice it to say he was fired after the 2014 season. Ross’s fascination with PROVEN LOSERS absolutely mystifies me. And, remember, T-Baum is the guy who paid out hundreds of millions of Ross’s dollars to Suh, Tannehill, etc., in an effort to upgrade the Dolphins for 2015. The result? The 8-8 Dolphins of 2014 became the 6-10 Dolphins of 2015! FAILURE!!!

So here’s my verdict on Ross’s decisions to retain or hire the following FRONT OFFICE PEOPLE:
1) BILL PARCELLS; FAILURE.
2) MIKE DEE; FAILURE.
3) JEFF IRELAND; FAILURE.
4) DENNIS HICKEY; TO BE DETERMINED.
5) MIKE TANNENBAUM; FAILURE.

THE HEAD COACHES: More bad news on these retentions/attempted hires/hires by Steve Ross:
1)TONY SPARANO; FAILURE.
2) The HARBAUGH HIRE ESCAPADE; FAILURE.
3) The JEFF FISHER REJECTION; FAILURE.
4) TODD BOWLES: Coached Miami to a 2-1 record and was let go by Ross. Bowles was 10-6 in 2015 as HC of the Jets. Has NO CHANCE to get hired by Ross because he’s a proven WINNER BOTH IN MIAMI AND NEW YORK!!
5) JOE PHILBIN: FAILURE.
6) DAN CAMPBELL: FAILURE.
7) ADAM CASE: TO BE DETERMINED. WAS O/C of the 6-10 Chicago Bears in 20015. WHOOPEE!! Has NO HEAD COACHING EXPERIENCE AT ANY LEVEL. Sound familiar?

THE STADIUM UPGRADE:
After the embarrassing effort to get tax dollars failed, Ross announced he’d plunk down $400 million of his own money to upgrade Sun Baked Stadium. Many praised Ross for his efforts. But Ross is NOT doing this out of the goodness of his heart. He’s doing it to get a SUPER BOWL, and its benefits, in Sun Baked Stadium! Ross’s $400 million pales in comparison to the 1.3 billion spent to build Levi’s Stadium (home of Super Bowl 50). And it looks positively puny compared to the over $2 billion spent by the Kroenke family for the Rams’ new stadium in suburban Los Angeles.

The new seats in Ross’s stadium look nice, but the fact that ROSS REMOVED about 11,000 of them will be viewed negatively by those who award Super Bowls. Anyway, this Super Bowl talk is irrelevant to Dolphin fans. Miami has NO CHANCE of going to the Super Bowl as long as Ross owns the team and sticks with the current philosophies expressed in his past football decisions.

Ross’s alleged “Shade Devices” constructed over the stadium actually will NOT help most who are seated in the lower deck seats, including yours truly. Same old, same old, in the hot months of September and October. And speaking of those peak hurricane months, the next category 4 hurricane that hits Miami Gardens likely will do massive damage to Ross’s “Shade Devices.” I’m calling “BULLSHIT” on any claim that this stadium project is hurricane proof!!! Perhaps if Ross actually LIVED in south Florida (instead of New York), he would know better!! Conversely, Marlins’ Stadium, totally enclosed and air conditioned, is constructed so that it likely will withstand a category 4 hurricane (according to an analysis I saw on, I believe, either the Weather Channel or the National Geographic Channel). Ross SHOULD HAVE DONE what was done in Miami regarding the construction of the stadium. For an estimated cost of $700-$800 million (according to a Google article) Ross could have built a similar stadium that was NEW, AIR CONDITIONED, AND MUCH MORE RESISTANT TO HURRICANES!! Then he could expect the NFL to put SEVERAL FUTURE SUPER BOWLS in his edifice. Instead, he spent $400 million for an OLD< NOT AIR CONDITIONED, stadium that is far from hurricane proof! –STUPID!!!!

SEAT ASSIGNMENTS
One of the most hate-raising issues associated with Ross’s stewardship of the franchise is the issue of seat assignments. I was told I COULD NOT buy tickets between the goal lines on the Miami side, even though I’ve been a season ticket holder almost since forever last season. Nor would I be allowed to buy tickets on the visitor’s side between the 30’s, either. I found that people with 2-3 years as ticket holders were given preferential seating treatment and location over people like me and “MY BOYZ” who’ve been lifelong loyal season ticket buyers. The guy who got tickets one row in front of my brother-in-law (Jim) has had tix for just ONE YEAR! When Ross said he’d offer tickets according to how long we’ve been ticket holders HE LIED!!! Just tell the truth, Steve, if you can. It’s REALLY good for business.

Also, there’s the ultra-embarrassing story of Ross’s $1,000-$2,500 seat per game “LAZY BOY SEATS” located on the Miami side near the Dolphins’ bench between the 30 yard lines. THEY WERE MOSTLY EMPTY!! When Dolphin players turned and looked at the crowd, they saw EMPTY SEATS!! Boy, that will get you pumped-up for the 4th quarter, eh??Ross’s ticket agent told me “all those prime seats selling for $1,000 per game (and up) were sold out.” How come they were 75-90% vacant during every game I attended?? I’m calling “BULLSHIT” again!! Sell those seats next year to the highest bidders and put noisy Dolfans near the Dolphins bench as happened in prior years! Bring the THUNDER, not the SILENCE! Fill those seats!

PARKING
Finally, the parking issue. The price of my parking pass has TRIPLED SINCE 2008! It’s now $300 per season to park in the area where we’ve had our “MOBFESTS.” In this season’s opening game vs. Buffalo, my “PRIME” space was located more than a mile from the stadium underneath the Turnpike overpass way southeast of “Sun Baked.” In 2007, I remember a friend paying $5 to park there! –As for parking lot security, a major security issue at the Chiefs’ game in September of 2014 occurred. My wife will no longer attend games because of this near riot (featuring cars running into each other) inside the southeast corner of the fenced-in lot. NO SECURITY, I REPEAT, NO SECURITY ever arrived in that area despite verbal pleas to officers on the outside of the fence to restore order. We have yet to receive any apology/explanation from the Dolphins almost 18 months later despite two in-person complaints and several email complaints. ROSS JUST DOESN’T CARE!! – – So, be sure to “pack some heat” in your glove compartment if attending future games!!!!!!!

We’ve gone over some of the major problems with the Miami franchise under Ross’s stewardship. Now it’s time for—-

SUGGESTED SOLUTIONS

1) CHANGE ADVISERS; Ross has relied heavily on Carl Peterson and Jeff Ireland for advice during the years he’s owned the team. Thankfully, Ireland eventually was jettisoned (but only after he received a contract extension and a pay raise). An article in the SUN-SENTINEL in 2014 stated that Ross consulted with “King Carl” on every major football issue from 2008 to 2014. Eventually, though, Ross brought Mike Tannenbaum into his inner circle of advisers. This came AFTER he was fired by the Jets. “T-BAUM’s” impact on the franchise, so far, has been negative (witness last season’s 6-10 season). Time to CHANGE ADVISERS! I’d strongly suggest that Ross seek out the advice of the Hall-of-Famer himself, former Bills and Colts GM Bill Polian. His advice could be just what our franchise needs to return to its winning ways. And Ross should also ask Polian “Who else would you recommend I take advice from?” I’ll bet neither King Carl nor T-Baum will be on Polian’s list!! Do it, Steve!!

2) STOP HIRING HEAD COACHES WITH NO PRIOR HEAD COACHING EXPERIENCE!! –Cam Cameron, Tony Sparano, Joe Philbin, Dan Campbell and now Adam Gase. Need I say more?? Ross tried to hire guys who had prior HC experience (Harbaugh,Fisher). He botched both of them. KEEP TRYING, STEVE!! And consult with Polian on who to interview. (Perhaps Ross SHOULD let Polian do the interviews?)

3) Our new GM was promoted from within. If this appointment also fails, I’d favor bringing in someone who’s had success in a WINNING FRANCHISE. Hiring guys who’ve worked in a losing franchise IS NOT THE WAY TOO GO!

4) THE STADIUM UPGRADE. I already addressed this issue. PUT ME ON RECORD as favoring a retractable dome/fully air conditioned NEW STADIUM for the Dolphins. Ross’s patchwork approach will prove to be an inadequate failure when the next major hurricane passes over it! DON’T SAY I DIDN’T WARN YOU!!

5) ROSS NEEDS TO LIVE BY HIS WORD that those who’ve had season tickets the longest will get first shot on available seats. This absolutely WAS NOT DONE LAST SEASON!!

6) PARKING LOT SECURITY needs to be upgraded. Having NO SECURITY and TRIPLING parking rates in some areas over a 7 year period IS UNACCEPTABLE. This stunt is pure “King Carl,” going back to his days in Kansas City! FIX IT!!!

7) ONE LAST REQUEST: Put “fannies in the seats” between the 30 yard lines on the Dolphins side in the luxury seats. If prices need to be lowered, then LOWER THEM!! Perhaps giving them away to local high school football players might break the silence and “RESTORE THE ROAR” of the historic Orange Bowl!!

    From Rotoworld.com

According to NFL draft insider Tony Pauline, Louisiana Tech QB Jeff Driskel has been stamped with a second-round grade by “a number of franchises.”
Driskel has NFL-caliber arm strength and size (6’4/230), and scouts were reportedly impressed with the way he improved at the Senior Bowl as the week of practices progressed. Per Pauline, some evaluators believe a good Combine performance could push Driskel toward the top of the second quarterback tier, ahead of Michigan State’s Connor Cook and Penn State’s Christian Hackenberg.

    LOL FFR.
I can always count on you on delivering (pouncing on Tim’s Swiss comment).

  3. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Al, I think this is the more likely list.

    Suh – restructure
    Cameron – release
    Grimes – release
    Wake – release
    Misi – release
    Jennings – release/retires

It’s likely they’re all on the table but I doubt all of them are released.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Suh – restructure Saves 19 mil
Cameron – release Saves 7.5 mil
Grimes – release Saves 6.5 mil
Wake – release Saves 8.4 mil
Misi – release Saves 3.722 mil
      Jennings – release/retires Saves 4 mil
Dion Jordan – release Saves 3.2 mil

About $52 mil to go along with our current underage of $9 mil, so $60 + mil is there, to start a total rebuild.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

It’s not really a total rebuild though because you’re not replacing a lot of top production. Many of these guys haven’t been overly productive at least last season. So replacing them isn’t a difficult proposition.

  4. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Ken, you’re wrong about our cap situation. We could easily have upwards of $40M this year in cap space restructuring Suh’s deal which is restructure friendly because it was written that way, along with some other cuts/restructures that are likely to happen.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

We could have that much money if we cut a lot of players. We need to add players not cut them. Our cap situation is one of the worst in the league at this point. Whether or not we cut players to make it better is another story.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Suh – restructure because we can
Cameron – release due to lack of productivity regardless of reason
Grimes – release due to signs of regression
Wake – release due to coming off of Achilles injury at 34
Misi – release due to lack of playmaking ability even though a starter
Jennings – release/retires due to age and production

Add Fuckface to the list due to obvious fuckface actions. LOL

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

And that doesn’t consider the fact that 2 key starters: Miller and Vernon have expiring contracts and are not counted toward that cap.

  5. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I agree with Ken on Mr. T and Suh. As you know, I’ve always felt that was a mistake. You just don’t build a team like that.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Actually yes you do. When you have a chance to land a generational player in his prime you explore it. Why do you think top DT prospects go top 5 in the draft all the time? It’s a premium position. I never thought we would be players for Suh and was shocked we landed him.

He got off to a slow start but once he got going he couldn’t be blocked. Vance Joseph said when evaluating game film he saw that Suh was doubled and sometimes tripled teamed most of the time. That’s a core defensive player.

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

If Suh was doubled or tripled team all the time our linebackers are even worse than I thought.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Yep Ken, that’s why we’re talking about needed 3 LBs, and if you don’t have a playmaking LB then Suh is wasted.

As a defense for our LBs they did make some plays, just not enough, and not enough game changing plays.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

I agree with Mike E. DTs are not a position you pay the kind of money that we pay Suh. DEs get those kind of contracts because the game today is pass the ball and from the D point of view – sack the QB. A DT who can take on double teams not as important. Not saying it is isn’t nice to have one but not for the kind of money we laid out for Suh.

  6. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

  8. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Tim

Detroit was never a top defense with Suh, and we weren’t even top 20. I never said DT isn’t an important position, but not one team in the NFL pays anywhere near what we’re paying Suh.

Denver Broncos – SB Champs – Sylvester Williams is about 15th on their payroll at $2.4M
Carolina Panthers – SB Losers – Star Lotuleilei is about 11th on their payroll at $3.5M

I couldn’t disagree with you more Tim

Show me one team in the history of the NFL that their top salaried position player is a DT that won a SB

  9. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

So you guys don’t think chopping heads off isn’t violent? LOL

  10. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Ken, I also ask the question if Suh was doubled and triple teamed where was everyone else?

  11. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Tim

Look back at that link you just put up, we were 12th in defense in ’14, and we were worse with Suh in ’15. Oops to you! lol

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

2015 was an anomaly year, with the Philbin mess, nothing that happened in that year statswise should be used in any debate. Anyone who uses it to back their side of the debate I’m going to call you weak for doing it. Mike, I’ll give you a free pass this time, but next time, like the second dog bite… 😉

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

That wasn’t the point. You said DET was never a top defense with Suh when they were #2 in 2014. They were top of the league in a few categories.

Our personnel had issues outside of Suh. Why do you think everyone wants DE, LB, CB and S?

    DT salaries.
    http://overthecap.com/position/4-3-defensive-tackle

You’ll see more big contracts for DT in the future. Also Watt who is a 3-4 DE which is basically an interior DL makes $100M.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

Watt will get paid because he is a DE and he primarily rushes the passer. He is not really an interior lineman.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

In a 3-4 yeah he is because he’s flanked by OLBs who rush the passer. You’re splitting hairs here. Top DL are premium positions and always have been. You’re arguing against history, not me.

  14. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Steve

Ngata was 2nd, and close to the 2 salaries of the guy above him and below him. Suh is nearly 3X higher than anyone else on the team. Listen, the argument is silly, we waaaaay overpaid for a DT, that’s the whole of it.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

We overpaid for Suh, only if we don’t put players around him, like last yr, but if we do look out. The biggest hole in Brady’s game is a pass rush up the middle, so…

  15. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Tim

Watt is a game changer though. Suh isn’t, and has never been. Watt also plays outside enough, and that’s usually where he gets his sacks.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Dude, Suh has wrecked games in his career. You’re way off.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Suh is less of a game changer, because he’s always doubled and tripled, which is all the more reason why you need talent around him. With that said Suh was grossly overpaid last yr, because we didn’t have the talent around him.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

That’s a viable argument. Suh was suppose to help get us over the hump but we weren’t good enough in other areas for that to happen. Mainly the trenches on the other side of the ball. But LB and DB were issues too.

  16. D's avatar D says:

You build defenses around DTs why wouldn’t they be worth that kind of money?

    • D's avatar D says:

Go look at the top contracts for defensive players in sure you find a good percentage of them to be DT contracts

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

They are, Mike and Ken are wrong. The NFL says so, not me. Top DL make a lot of money and get drafted high every year. Mike and Ken say they’re not premium positions. Okay! LOL

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

Because you don’t build defenses around DTs.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Yes you do! That’s the plan all the time. You build from the inside out. Tell me why blue chip DTs go top 5 every year? There’s your answer right there. I’m shocked at your viewpoint here, Ken. You’re a seasoned fan. You couldn’t be more wrong.

That wasn’t the question Ken, it was Show me one team in the history of the NFL that their top salaried position player is a DT that won a SB. Suh played more DE than Ngata did in 2012.
    _______________________________
But Ngata wasn’t their highest paid player. By what you posted above Suggs was paid more and he is not a DT.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Suggs was included, because he was their top paid player, he just happens to be a DE. So no I don’t think there’s been an SB Champ that has had their top paid player being a DT, but what I posted with Ngata is pretty close, making Mike’s point moot.

  18. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

The 2 SB teams have their highest DT’s salaries at 11 for Carolina, and 15 for Denver, so, apparently, that’s NOT how you build a great defense. Again, we’re surely the only team paying a DT more than 2X anyone else on the roster, but you can keep saying that the NFL disagrees if it makes you feel better about it. lol

  19. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Any player who takes up two of there’s play after play is someone special, and worthy of the big bucks. Flip-side is a corner who can take up elite receivers one-on-one when most teams double them or a LT that does the same to a top DE without TE help.

    That’s what being a game-changer is about.

  20. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Tim

Ok, so can we agree if we had that many holes on our team, throwing a $25M DT wasn’t going to change much? Now it’s harder to fill those holes when you have one guy making a ridiculous salary.

  21. Ken's avatar Ken says:

Look at Denver’s defense which is by far the best in the league. They have very good DTs but they don’t pay them a lot. In fact they let Pot Roast go as opposed to pay him big dollars. Where do they pay the big dollars: Edge rushers and DBs. That’s where you invest big money on D in today’s game.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Again, you can’t use an example from one team as word.

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

It is also how the Giants built their SB championship D. Edge rushers. They had good DTs that they drafted but they didn’t pay them big contracts. Or the Seahawks. Edge rushers and DBs. That’s today’s game.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Those are for sure the big money positions on D, but if your DT takes up two on the line that is what he does. Either means your DE doesn’t get doubled (which makes him better) or their QB has one less option when he drops back.

    ********************

Good luck filling all those holes and finding talent around him when you have no money to do it, and we still need to fix the O-line too, it’s not just the defense.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Haven’t you seen any of the post talking about our salary cap situation, they’ve been all over the place the past week, and several today. Once Suh is paid a bonus this yr, instead of getting a weekly salary we’ll be about $30 mil under the cap. Enough money to sure up the D and add a guard.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Of course I have. You can only defer those payments so much before you have to pay it. So if we avoid paying this year, we’ll get hit next year.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

But the cap keeps going up, so deferring it is better than paying it now, and it’s not like Suh’s cap hit was going to be $28 mil next yr, it’s actually only $15 mil. This is why Aponte is the master.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Don’t think almost anyone will argue that Suh was a luxury we didn’t need. He played darn well though, least after the slow start.

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

Darn well – no. Okay – yes. He had some big games but had others where he disappeared. He also made many costly penalties.

  23. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Elite Ds are built around CBs that don’t need safety help, DEs that need to be double, and DTs that need to be double. Once doubled you leave 8 to block 10, big advantage for the D, but you must have other guys around him that can beat a single teamed block.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

Not arguing that but generally you don’t spend 25 million per season on the DT. Usually the highest paid is the DE or the CB. That’s crazy money for a guy to eat up 2 blockers.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

It was done, because Brady’s weakness is pressure up the middle. All things aren’t created equal, nor are all team’s situations.

  24. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

The NFL experts were actually right about Suh, they said last offseason, if we didn’t have the guys around him that it made no sense to acquire him, because he’d get doubled and tripled, and wouldn’t make many plays.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

That’s exactly my point Steve. We had/have so many holes to fill, it was illogical to bring in Suh at that crazy salary, which would prohibit filling in those same holes.

  25. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Mike and Ken, you guys are grasping at straws with a small sample size to make your arguments. DT is a premium position and always has been. To deny it is to ignore NFL history.

You have also downplayed Suh’s ability and impact since he’s been in the league. He’s a elite DT, not a run of the mill guy.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

We beat NE in weak 17, and Suh had as much to do with that as anyone. That’s why he was brought in.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Stop distorting the argument. The point is, no team pays what we paid for Suh. When you get that, you’ll stop telling me how important DT’s are. He didn’t make sense for our team, because we have so many needs, and his salary is going to make it much more difficult to fill those needs.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I agree he didn’t make sense last yr, but going forward our D could be great, if they get an elite LB (I’m thinking from the draft) and a safety (Delmas will do, if he can stay healthy, but that won’t happen, so we’ll need to draft on too). Our D was pretty good in 2014 at times until Delmas got hurt.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I already addressed that. I’m not distorting anything. You and Ken are off on DT value no matter how you slice it.

        Tim Knight says:
        February 15, 2016 at 3:10 pm

That’s a viable argument. Suh was suppose to help get us over the hump but we weren’t good enough in other areas for that to happen. Mainly the trenches on the other side of the ball. But LB and DB were issues too.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

      Sorry Tim:
NFL history says DTs are not worth 25 million per season. DTs traditionally don’t make the level of impact plays that other positions make. Having a strong presence on the interior of the line is important but you don’t need elite. I mentioned a number of recent SB champion teams that plugged and played guys at DT. They were all good players at DT but not elite nor paid anywhere near. I don’t get where you think it is historically justified to pay a DT 25 million per season. It’s not. I don’t think it has ever been done. We are not talking about paying big money to a DT.. We are talking about payments of a historical proportion.

  26. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/rankings/cap-hit/defensive-tackle/

Before we restructure, these are the top salaries at DT. Mind you, EVERY team can restructure, but eventually, that $$$ MUST be paid!!!

    • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

      Just the guaranteed money though.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

That’s a weak point to make, the salary cap hit is just a number, now if it was $28 mil every yr, then that’s different, next yr it’s $15 mil. We all know he’s being paid a lot and probably too much, but you have to try something, and it isn’t a horrible decision, seeing that he’s Brady’s weakness. With the salary cap going up $10 + mil per yr we’ll be fine.

  27. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Let’s be clear, what we paid Suh is not even the discussion anymore. It’s whether DT is a premium position or not. The answer is yes and it always has been. NFL history backs that up. It’s not just a few fans saying that.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

But we are not talking about a premium with Suh’s contract. We are talking about a ransom and that is part of the discussion with Suh’s contract.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

His guaranteed money is $60M not $114M. That’s what you guys are missing. Al points this out all the time.

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

I am talking about money towards the cap. That is my concern. That is around 25 million right now.

  29. Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

    Mike,

I saw your comparison of Ross to Dolan and most of it is correct, but you left one thing out: Dolan hired Isaiah Thomas. He hired someone that took over the CBA and ran it into the ground. He gave someone with little experience (and failed experience at that) and let him do whatever he wanted, failing miserably every time. He let someone run theThere were also whispers that Thomas was in his ear for the Carmelo trade, which I was never a fan of to begin with.

  30. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Tim

C’mon man, the argument is, and has always been our team, and if it made sense to pay Suh that kind of money. Maybe somehow it will make sense, but I’ve felt from the start that it didn’t make sense to pay a DT that much money, when we have so many other needs.

    • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

Could be worse, we could pay OV 15million per season😂

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

That’s fine and I get that part of the argument, even said so myself, but you and Ken took it into other arenas that were inaccurate. You downplayed the DT position when NFL teams have it at the top of their list.

And yeah we could redo the big salary next year that we put on the books to keep his first year hit down, but that would also means he’ll be with us for more than two seasons too. Least one more.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Suh’s guaranteed money is all anyone should focus on, and his position or his ability should not be questioned. He’s an elite DT who can be dominant a lot of the time.

When Wake went down that was a major blow because we were turning things around defensively at the time. We lead the league in sacks for 5 straight weeks and were ascending. Then we had a major void. Top players matter.

Is it duck season or rabbit season? I can’t tell from today’s argument

  39. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The bottom line is the 2016 season was not about Suh and his contract, he was actually one of our best players. The problem was our personnel dept. and likely some coaches over-evaluated our roster. Something I said I was concerned about heading into the season. I was concerned about our young inexperienced depth and it proved to be true. A lot of young players didn’t produce the way they were expected to.

We have a chance to correct that by clearing more cap space than you may think is possible but it is, and add a solid draft class. I think this team has enough talent already that if we add some key pieces we can be a playoff team. We’re not 3-4 years away because no team is.

  40. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

We could be a playoff team by getting one of the top 3 LBs in the draft, although not sure about Jaylon’s Smith injury, resign Delmas, get a guard that can actually block, and most of all Tannehill must arrive. I’d also be ok with Brothers in the 2nd and a top DB in the 1st.

  41. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I’m a lot less concerned about whether a position is a premium position than I am whether they are a premium player

If you can get an elite player, regardless of position, I think its something to build around

If you were too say that the premium positions are, for example: QB, LT and Pass Rusher
and you spent a big chunk of your cash on those positions
and you had a top 15 guy at all 3 positions
you might not be anything but average

if you have a guy that is a top player at a position
    and elite player
even if its not considered a premium position, you have a better chance to be a top offense or defense IMO

I think the Ravens got a lot out of their defense with 2 players: Ed Reed and Ray Lewis
and neither safety not MLB qualify as premium positions
but they were perennially good b/c of the level of play of those two guys

You reallt elite players at the end of the day

I have a question for some of you legal guys on here. Is it legal for an on duty policeman to question a minor without a parent present?

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Would depend on the state law. Off duty doesn’t really matter cause cops are always empowered. And obviously they can talk to them on the street, etc. What would be clear is they can’t after an arrest is made without permission absent a real reason to do so……..like someone is in danger or something like that.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

And should have added that the only negative ever on talking to a kid without a parent there is that you can’t use whatever they say against them in a criminal trial.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

I don’t think they can do an actual interrogation on a minor without parental consent as there would be 5th amendment considerations such as can a minor waive his 5th amendment rigths and does a minor even know and or comprehend his 5th amendment rights. I do think there would be situations where an office is able to question a minor such as in hot pursuit of a suspect to stop and ask did you see which way he went etc.. but an actual interrogation I think gets very dicey if the minor is a suspect.

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

Put in another context a parent at any time can invoke the 5th amendment protections at any time and terminate an interrogation of their child even if they are not permitted to be present. Ultimately thinking about this more I can’t see how the police would be allowed to interrogate a child without the parent being present. It would violate the 5th amendment and if they are preventing the child from leaving that would actually constitute false imprisonment. Any information they obtain from such an interrogation would be inadmissible. I don’t do criminal law and while I used to represent a number of police departments it’s been a while since I have done that. So take my advice to be worth exactly what you paid for it.

I totally agree with you when you say if you can get a premium player at any position you should try and get them. I had no problem with the pursuit of Suh, but when the Lions gave up and we were paying him the highest salary for a DT in the history of the game, I think we should have backed off, and let him go. We ended up drafting Phillips anyway, and with Suh and Phillips, maybe we would have kept AJ Francis. We wouldn’t have had the best D-line, no doubt, but we would have a lot more flexibility going forward keeping our own FA’s, and maybe getting some O-line help, and then would could have drafted Defense all day long.

Al — have no doubt OV will get more than $15 mil guaranteed over 3-4 years (or the way contracts work maybe 2 and a little more years). But if we tag him he gets that same amount guaranteed this year. And I don’t think he is worth that in 2016.

Maybe I’m missing something here. Understand they can fold the tag amount into the contract, but you start with him making that next season and then spread it out.
    ————-
It works like this if OV is tagged at 15 mill.
If OV’s agent, David Cantor, agrees to a 23 million dollar guaranteed deal with the Dolphins in let’s say June of this year, the 15 mill franchise tag is removed and the new contract kicks in with the agreed upon value of YR 1 applied to the 2016 cap.
If nothing is agreed upon by the deadline NFL specifies for franchise tag situations; the Fins have a right to tag again at a higher value. At that point, if let’s say that the agent/team come to terms on a 23 mill guaranteed deal, the negotions will consider the 15 mill paid out in the previous year and only provide for 23-15 in guarantees going forward.
People get too wrapped up in YR/YR values but it’s total guarantees that matters and that means only signing bonus, YR 1 base and ‘almost’ always YR 2. Beyond that, nothing is guaranteed.

However, in February of 2008, Ross bought 50 per cent of the franchise, leaving Wayne with 45% and other investors with 5% per Wickipedia. But if you want to take Ross’s only winning season in 8 tries away from him, far be it from me to stop you.

Hell no Olddolphan that’s a suckers bet that we might never get to see anyway. (probability of a direct hit on the stadium) but there is NO stadium design, enclosed or otherwise that will withstand a catagory 4 hurricane without MILLIONS of dollars in damage. You are not qualified to comment on the structural integrity of a shade device vs a dome but again I assure you it will be designed too withstand what ever windzone rating that area of miami falls under. The engineer who designed it most certainly added a safety factor above the rated tolerances too. Your stance that Ross is stupid or cheep for building a shade instead of a dome and using hurricanes as a reason doesn’t stand.

‘which is why I keep saying draft LBs with the first two picks’

after watching the SB and what both defenses did i am thinking your thoughts a few months back about drafting all defense is the way to go. i get they need to fix the oline but i can wait a year for that if it means making a def like those two teams have

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Following this advice the team’s need will change yearly, based on who won the last SB. Al Davis is all in 😉

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

      The Panthers drafted guys like”
Keuchly, Kawann Short, Lotulelei, Shaq Thompson, and Kony Ealy in the last few years

Keuchly, Thompson and Lotulelei are all 1st rounders
Ealy and Short are 2nd rounders

Josh Norman and Bene Benwikre (their starting cbs) are late rounders in the last few years as well

They have 3 solid vets in Jared Allen (free agent recently) Charles Johnson and Thomas Davis. Davis and Johnson are long time Panthers

So the meat of their defense was really dracted the last few years
and a lot of it are 1st and 2nd rounders

They got lucky with the norman steel
but so did we with a player like Reshad Jones

we have a few decent and good vets on defense
just fill in some holes with high pick defensive players and we can be really good on D, very quickly IMO

it might take more than 1 year though

ok i am starting to agree with some of you. wilson maybe the best qb in the league

  88. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Piggy, I wouldn’t have let the baby go with the priest in the first place, but when they suggested the brat Sam go with the priest my immediate thought was they are going to die because of that kid. Hell the baby doesn’t even cry, but that kid keeps going mom, mom. mom. mom. mom in the middle of a bunch of zombies.
