The Wedge Scouting Report: Joshua Garnett, OG

3 -2 -1 Liftoff

Another fine launch GX4!

Oh hey, Dolfans.  Wondering who GX4 is?  He’s my launch specialist.  He’s gets me into space so I can destroy more lifeforms.  And he’s the best.  GX4 has iron will – he never fails me.  Its hard to believe he is a Stanfordulsian.

I know…I know…how prejudicial of me.  I should not judge Stanfordulsians like that.

It’s just that my last Stanfordulsian, Johanna Martian, well he was so soft…

Every time Johanna launched me, he used to cry.  He didn’t want to destroy any planets or lifeforms…what a softy.  He cried so much….he melted…

JohannaMartian

He even reported me to his mother, who threatened to sue my boss, the Alpha Alien.

Well I had two choices: 1. Stop destroying so many lifeforms; or 2. well…

So after I took the second option, they replaced Johanna with another Stanfordulsian.  Oh no, not another marshmallow!!!

I guess I prejudged, because his replacement, GX4 is made of iron and very reliable!

But you don’t want to hear about my launch specialist, you want to hear about football!

Which brings me to Joshua Garnett, an offensive lineman from Stanford.

JoshuaGarentt3

So why draft the Outland Trophy winner.  Are you kidding me?

He was the best guard in the country.

At 6-5 and over 320 pounds (depending who you ask) Garnett is a beast of a man.

And he is not soft either!

Joshua Garnett

Quite the contrary.  He’s mean, scrappy and will put you on your Fxeeeblebubbs.

Oh…you don’t believe me.  You think because he went to Stanford, and you’ve had bad experiences with Stanford offensive linemen, that it’s the same thing all over again.

You judgmental Earthling – how dare you.

JoshuaGarnett2

Okay, let’s just bury your stereotypes now.  If you don’t – well Garnett may bury you.

Garnett didn’t just win the Outland Trophy in 2015.  He won the Morris Trophy (Pac-12 lineman of the year), and was named first team All American by Sporting News, The Associates Press and USA Today among others.

JoshuaGarnett5

It was pancake block after pancake block for Garnett.

Stanford plays a pro style offense.

Garnett excelled at run blocking for Stanford.  He did quite a job in the passing game too.

Garnett is probably ready to play on Day 1 of his NFL career.  He played left guard at Stanford his entire career.

If Garnett was an Alien Weapon of Destruction he would be the dreaded Stanfordulsian Iron Mashmallow….He will put you on your Fxeeeblebubbs!

INTERESTING 3-Day baseball series between the Georgetown Hoyas and FAU. –G’Town took a 13-3 lead into the bottom of the 9th Friday night in game 1. Florida Atlantic rallied for EIGHT RUNS, and had runners on 2nd and 3rd with only one out. A single would tie the game; a home run would produce the biggest 9th-inning rally in FAU history!! But, alas, the next 2 FAU batters made outs, and the Hoyas held on to give FAU their first loss of the regular season, 13-11. –FAU, behind Brandon Rhodes’ 2-hitter, shut out G’Town 6-0 in game two. Then, today, FAU rolled the Hoyas 14-2 in a game that was over in the 2nd inning. So FAU stands at 9-1 in the young baseball season and figures to stay near #15 in the COLLEGIATE BASEBALL poll. Two games against St. Joseph’s (of Philadelphia) and 3 games against Rutgers are on tap this week. –FAU will be favored in every one of those games.

ONE MORE baseball ditty for tonight. –Last season, Miami’s Dee Gordon led the National League in both batting average and stolen bases. WHO WAS THE LAST NATIONAL LEAGUER to lead his league in those two categories in the same season??????
    ——————-
GIVE UP????? —-Well, you have to go way back to 1949 when the Hall-of-Famer, himself, the legendary Jackie Robinson, led the NL in both of these categories. Will it be ANOTHER 66 YEARS before this feat is duplicated??? –I remember watching ole #42 on TV when my parents immigrated to the US in 1954. By then, he was a true legend!! I was awe-struck at his ability to create utter havoc on the basepaths. –In 1955, Jackie STOLE HOME against the Yankees in the World Series as a totally pissed-off Yogi Berra complained that the umpire had blown the call!! – – I’ve seen a reply of that play a hundred times and I STILL can’t tell you for sure if he was safe or out! But I can tell you that Jackie’s brazen thievery lit a fire under the Dodgers as they went on to win their ONLY WORLD SERIES in Brooklyn, before moving to Los Angeles.

MY TAKE ON Manning’s retirement. PLAINLY SPEAKING, it’s the right thing to do. Manning’s a lock first ballot HOFer, one of the true greats in NFL history. ONE MORE YEAR in the NFL likely would have tarnished his amazing career. VERY SMART to quit as a champion!
    ————–
AS A DOLPHIN FAN, I was more than amused at those who REALLY THOUGHT MANNING would play for a team owned by Ross and GM’d by the proven loser, Jeff Ireland. –NO CHANCE IN HELL PEYTON plays behind this awful O-Line in this scenario!!

Ken, I browsed thru real quick, but wanted to respond to one statement.
Yeah, I get the Parcells if they don’t bite as pups thing….but some guys develop more slowly depending on position, injuries, and who all is in front of them.
Besides, in all actuality Hewitt is biting as a pup. He’s an UDFA rookie that is nipping at the heels for a spot with the current roster.
Will he be able to keep that up with a new FA LB and/or an early drafted LB?
That will be what his 2nd training camp will answer. But he’s growling & snarling at the end of 2015.
    Stay tooned. 😉

Morning, all. Those blokes are fits for us. Boone and MW especially. I definitely want to keep Shelby, letting OV walk and there are enough S to meet our needs. Having freed up money means we can, at least, approach F/A with a solid plan. What I don’t want to see is any more types like Jason Fox and Shelly Smith. I don’t think our team is in really a dire place, there is some really good young talent on board that we just need to be patient with.

I can’t think of them off the top of my head. Someone posted about it awhile back. I think there’s 3 or 4 of them. Not that they all suck like Martin, just that they didn’t pan out as projected.

David Yankey – BEEN A JOURNEYMAN; BACKUP MATERIAL
Andrus Peat – CURRENTLY NOT LIVING UP TO EXPECTATIONS (Asked to play OG late in season and struggled there according to PFF).
    Cameron Fleming – NOT GOOD
Jonathan Martin – NO COMMENT NEEDED HERE

These are just the Stanford guys that are currently rostered. I’d have to waste further time to see who attempted to make the NFL and is no longer there over the last 5 years.

You look at the TE that have come out of Stanford like Ertz & Fleener and those guys cant run block which is why they are free agents now

I like Lamar Miller very much but I feel many of the Fins fans are letting emotions get in the way of rational thought. Unless you are a crappy GM, RB is a position you can generally stock up rather easily year in and year out in the draft in today’s NFL of a 2 back system; especially in a WCO offense where they aren’t utilized as much on handoffs as in a primary pro set offense.
It’s important not to overpay and to understand other RB out there in the FA market can come in and do similar things splitting time with Ajayi

Report: Dolphins working on trade with Eagles for CB Byron Maxwell
    March 7, 2016

The Dolphins are working on a trade with the Eagles for cornerback Byron Maxwell, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
Maxwell spent his first four seasons with the Seahawks and was with the Eagles last season.
He had two interceptions in 2015.
The Dolphins need help in the secondary. Brent Grimes, who doesn’t have a guaranteed contract this year, is aging and Miami doesn’t have another clear cut starter.
Maxwell signed a six-year $63 million contract with the Eagles last season but didn’t live up to the contract.
He was graded by Pro Football Focus as No. 75 of 111 cornerbacks.
    This story will be updated.

The Miami Herald’s Armando Salguero reports impending free agent RB Lamar Miller will hit the open market.
The Dolphins and Miller have been working on a new deal, but Salguero reports nothing is expected to happen before free agency begins Wednesday. ESPN’s Dianna Marie Russini reports Miller is looking for a deal similar to the $8 million AAV DeMarco Murray received last offseason, but she hears his market will be closer to the $4-to-$5 million range. If he is disappointed by the offers he hears during the legal tampering period, it is possible Miller hashes out a compromise with Miami before Wednesday.

I was looking at PFF’s grades on NFL offensive lines from this past season (an article they put out in Jan) and am sickened by the amount of guys they say are doing well in their roles who were guys we talked about here on our boards on draft days over the last 2-3 years.. Including some FA guys like Mathis LOL. I’m just going to cut and past some of the comments:

Stud: First-year player Rob Havenstein (73.1) doesn’t look like a rookie. (I believe Randy liked this guy)

Stud: “Stud” seems a stretch, but Josh Kline (80.7) is having his best year, becoming a key constant on the Patriots’ line. (I liked him in the draft a couple years ago; went undrafted but others like GDP liked him too i believe)

Stud: You don’t hear the name Brandon Brooks (69.2) a lot when talking about the best guards in the league, but his consistent efforts mean you should.

Stud: Credit to Jack Mewhort (86.6) for doing a good job wherever he lines up. (Several ppl in here liked him)

Stud: Second-year guard Gabe Jackson (89.1) has stepped up his game in a big way this year.

Stud: This has been the year where Terron Armstead (93.0) has made it known he’s one of the best left tackles in the league.

    —–
    On the FA front:

Stud: After a slow start, Evan Mathis (85.6) has proven to be a tremendous acquisition, offering real bang for the Broncos’ buck.

Oh that John Martin f’d us in more ways than one ….
Stud: How good a move has the pickup of Richie Incognito (91.3) proven to be? He’s our top-ranked left guard this year.

    Remember this guy? lol
Stud: Nobody expected Joe Berger (83.1) to fill in for John Sullivan so well, but he has.

Some interesting discussion on 40 times in the article posted above:

“Historically, the combine method of timing is to start the clock on the athlete’s first movement and stop it when he crosses a beam. But most colleges are still old school, using a hand-held stopwatch.

    Big deal? You betchya.

Weinstein, whose company timed more than 200,000 high school athletes in the last year, has empirical data from years of testing that shows that hand-held stopwatches yield times in 40-yard runs that range from 0.10 to 0.25 seconds faster with the hand-held clocking than the Indianapolis combine method. The average difference was 0.17 faster.

“We timed thousands of athletes with three different methods on the same run and hand-held times are faster in 99 percent of the runs,” Weinstein said. “The slowest time is when clock is started electronically, when the athlete lifts his hand. The so-called combine time is in the middle. The clock is started by a coach seven yards from the start as soon as the athlete moves. It is stopped when the athlete crosses the beam at the finish.”

The NFL accepts the combine method because it is a compromise that teams, coaches and athletes can relate to. Fast times are still in the 4.30-second range. If they used fully automated, those same fastest times would be in the 4.50-second range.

And the whole combine culture would be in shock, or denial.

“So we provide equipment that will allow them to do any of the three methods,” Weinstein said. “If they want it to relate to the Indianapolis combine, then they chose the hand-held start and electronic finish.”

Al, yes on McCourty. Both he & Taylor are the exact same size 5’10 195….and the Ravens are moving Lardarius Webb 5’10 182 to FS.
So unless Taylor came into camp flashing a lot as a corner, I’d seriously try him @ FS before it’s too late and we have to move on.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

This is Taylor’s last year on his rookie contract anyway so might as well see if he can be a fit somewhere.

    • Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

I would say as well that Taylor’s major flaw is when he’s trying to cover with his back to the QB. Otherwise, he does better when the action is in front of him and he’s facing the QB which are skills that should be better utilized as a FS.

Bleacher Report’s Jason Cole reports the Ravens “have only limited interest” in re-signing free agent G/T Kelechi Osemele.
This goes against previous reports that the Ravens baldy wanted to retain Osemele and make him their left tackle moving forward. But according to Cole, the Ravens don’t want to guarantee Osemele much money and prefer to pay year by year. Osemele does have an injury history with knee and back issues, which is definitely a concern, but he seems poised to break the bank this week as one of the top free agents at any position. Osemele is seeking $10 million-plus per year.

  39. D's avatar D says:

Again, 40 time is relevant to speed on the field. Person A who runs a 4.3 without pads may run 4.5 with, and the 4.5 guy without pads may run a 4.5 with pads because of body composition, weight distribution, etc. So whats really relevant, what ya see on tape with them gaining separation on deep routes or the perceived speed because of a still somewhat subjective 40 time? You would have to use electronic on both sides for a 40 time to be truly accurate, and you would have to have them run in pads to see what their football speed is. Some of the other skills like cone and broad jump, etc are more accurate and will be roughly same as it would be with pads on, but IMO all drills, minus BP should be done with pads on.

    • D's avatar D says:

It would be fine if pads added a static number of seconds to a players speed but to one guy it adds more than it does to others.

The Dolphins are expected to release LCB Brent Grimes.
It could be directly related to the Dolphins’ rumored pursuit of Eagles CB Byron Maxwell. According to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, Grimes has refused a pay cut. A bit of a headache off the field, Grimes’ play slipped on it in 2015, though he was still an adequate starter. Undersized and going on 33, Grimes is due $7.8 million next season. Releasing him would free up $6.5 million in cap space.

GDP, do you really think the people involved with choosing if Grimes takes a pay cut give a fuck what Miko thinks?… Its Grimes decision by way of his agent, that determine if they will accept it. Also the Phins organization doesnt care two shits about Miko and her loud mouth, there are tons of players who’s families dont make things easy for a club, but at the end of the day, Grimes plays for them not Miko and they arent going to cut a talented player because of his wife and they arent going to keep him if she was the best players wife since sliced bread, that’s just not how people do business.

I hope if there is a trade for Maxwell its a low round conditional. Taking on his contract should be benefit enough for the Eagles. Maxwell would be a decent CB in a press man scheme, but there are others out there i think would be as good and wouldnt cost us picks or a high salary. Regarding Maxwell’s current contract with Philadelphia.
Overthecap figures show him counting 9.7 mill against the cap for 2016.
His cap figure for 2017 is 11.2 mill (10 mill base; 1.2 pro rated amount from signing bonus) but only 3 mill is guaranteed from his 10 mill base so his dead cap hit would be 6.6 mill for 2017 if cut then (remaining signing bonus after 2016 = 3.6 mill; remaining guaranteed base salary = 3 mill).

    Tim,
There’s no doubt that when Kiko is healthy, he can be a beast…I just wonder about the injury history (2 knee issues in the last 2 years).
Anyway this is what WIKI has on his injury history:

    2014 season

Bills GM Doug Whaley announced that Alonso would be shifted to the weakside linebacker position for the 2014–15 NFL season.[19]

Shortly after however, Alonso tore his ACL while working out in Oregon and missed the entire 2014 season, as a seven-to nine-month recovery was expected.[20][21] Alonso was placed on the reserve/non-football injury list on August 26, 2014.[22]
    Philadelphia Eagles
    2015 season

On March 10, 2015, the Bills traded Alonso to the Philadelphia Eagles in exchange for LeSean McCoy to play for his former college coach Chip Kelly.[23]

During the second quarter of a week 2 contest against the Dallas Cowboys on September 20, 2015, Alonso suffered a Grade II sprain – a partial tear – of his repaired left anterior cruciate ligament (ACL).

Al, F=M*A, if F is constant, ie the power generated by your legs is equal, then A=F/(M+15) therefore any application of 15 lbs will have an affect on acceleration making it smaller and the percentage smaller it would make it is in direct relation to how much the mass was increased. Therefore for example a mass of 300lbs being increased by 15 is a much less significant change to a 175lbs person. On top of that, what i said regarding the build of the person, ie muscular vs sprinter build, would affect the F value, which again affects the overall % change to acceleration.

Thats a pretty formal proof of the likely affect on a small slender built athlete vs a more densely muscled one, as they will be less affected by the addition of the extra weight and therefore their football speed would be better. Im sure there exists exceptions to this rule but use of the 40 time as a litmus for football speed shouldn’t apply if its the exception not the norm.

    • D's avatar D says:

Alonzo would be worth trading for, i would either do a mid round conditional or a lower round this year pick. I wouldnt be doing a mid to upper pick even for the two. We basically are doing them a favor taking Maxwell, so no reason to offer picks for him, Alonso is on a very cheap rental contract so we would have to give up something, but it doesnt have to be something big. A conditional that said if he starts 6 games next year we give up a 3rd-4th rounder in 2017 would be ok with me, im going for 6-7th as a this year exchange.

This is exactly the sort of deal we should be making. Alonso will be a stud if medically ok. Maxwell couldn’t be any worse than a noticeably older Grimes. Start Lippett opposite him if we don’t go CB @#8.

    • D's avatar D says:

Its good i think, Alonso is pennies as far as contracts go, like less than a mil against cap. Problem is contract is done at the end of the year so we would have to work out an extension or he is just a cheap rental. Maxwell, and how good that part depends on if the contract renegotiation. Maxwell looked pretty bad last year, but he is capable of playing better, he is still pretty young and i think is an upgrade over Grimes, given we move to press man scheme. I just hope the compensation as for picks is not a 5th or higher this year.

Whitehead (6’2/241) was drafted by new Eagles DC Jim Schwartz in Detroit and is coming off back-to-back solid seasons.

In addition to the physicals, Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald reports that the Dolphins are also working to alter Maxwell’s contract. Maxwell signed a six-year, $63 million contract as a free agent last year and didn’t come all that close to living up to expectations as a starting corner for the Eagles. He’s due to make $8.5 million with a $9.7 million cap hit this year under the terms of that deal.

The Eagles re-signed quarterback Sam Bradford, but this deal and their reported willingness to trade DeMarco Murray and Ryan Mathews is a pretty clear sign that team wants to walk back much of what they feel went wrong after giving former coach Chip Kelly personnel control after the 2014 season.

The Dolphins are expected to send draft pick compensation back to Philadelphia, although the nature of the pick or picks is uncertain at this time.

The Philadelphia Eagles will trade cornerback Byron Maxwell, along with linebacker Kiko Alonso, to the Miami Dolphins when the league year begins Wednesday. Here are five things to know about the Dolphins’ newest cover man.

    1. A native of North Charleston, S.C., Maxwell was a two-sport star in college and earned a slew of collegiate offers despite missing his entire senior season with a torn ACL, which he suffered in a pick-up basketball game.

    2. Maxwell ultimately picked Clemson, where he spent five years (including a redshirt season). He recorded 163 tackles, three interceptions, 20 pass break-ups and six forced fumbles in his career.

    3. Seen as a project out of college, Maxwell slipped to the sixth round. The Seahawks took him with the 173rd overall pick.

    4. Maxwell flourished in Seattle, and was a charter member of the Legion of Boom. He appeared in back-to-back Super Bowls, winning the title in the 2013 season.

    5. He became a free agent in 2015, and cashed in. The Eagles gave him a six-year, $63 million contract. They decided to trade him to the Dolphins after a disappointing first season in Philadelphia.

You can tell by his statistics he is a pass defenser not a ballhawk. He will be agressive, and he will fight the ball away from defenders but he isnt going to come down with a ton of picks. I think though with Jones roaming in the deep secondary it might actually kick Jones’ numbers up some as some of those contested balls might wind up in Jones’ hands. He is a goof fit for a press system.

fast twitch / slow twitch fiber ratios in each persons muscle composition, oxygen intake & conversion rates in each body, bone structure (bio mechanics), etc have way more impact than 15 lbs of equipment weight on overall speed. If someone loses 15 lbs of fat are they going to see a linear increase in speed? No.

BTW Al i agree with all you are saying is it depends a lot on the persons physical makeup and their muscle make-up, but again, thats what im saying, a sprinter can have a good 40 time but doesnt mean he will be fast on the field, making the stat irrelevant to judge the football speed of a player wearing pads. You cant use 40 time alone to judge it and i personally believe you only confirm things you already know when watching them accelerate away from players on the field. There are plenty of people that have blazing 40 times at combine that when you watch them on the football field dont look nearly that fast, and some that dont have great numbers that you see them flying down the field when they break away on long runs. Its just stat for fans to oooooh and ahhhhh over, it doesnt make you a great football player, or even suggest you will be.
