The Wedge Scouting Report: Mackensie Alexander, CB

Wedge here for Toots SuperGlue!

Ever had one of those days?

Nothing can withstand the gravitational forces you pass through.

Everything comes to pieces!

Well that’s when you need your Toots SuperGlue!

TOOTSGLUEAD

TOOTS is the Glue you can rely on like superstar cornerback Mackensie Alexander.

Just apply a little bit of Toots Superglue to you broken Photon Belt or your best Wide Receiver and like Magic you are back in space again or pitching a shutout on the football field.

Toots and Alexander are airtight and won’t let anything come between them and the receiver, including bombs!

MackensieAlexander5

Alexander was one of the most highly ranked high school prospects coming out of high school.  He was talented then, he is talented now.

Toots won Space Ship Saver of the year last millennium.  And it still saves Space Ships!

Some think Alexander will be the first cornerback taken in the draft!  Some also think Toots will glue a moon to a planet!

Before the combine Alexander declared to the NFL “I am the best cornerback in the draft”…cocky, you bet!  True….maybe!

Cornerbacks need to be confident, and Mackensie certainly is.

And I am confident Toots will permanently glue anything it touches!

NCAA FOOTBALL: SEP 12 Appalachian State at Clemson

Guess how many interceptions Alexander had at Clemson…

The answer is ZERO.  Guess why?

Yep, you guessed it, no one dared to throw the ball near him.

Like Toots Superglue which never breaks down.  Toots is permanent and not safe for your kids to play with.

Alexander is true shutdown defensive back.  And Toots will kill your pets if they eat it!

MackensieAlexander4

Alexander is yet another prospect with Florida roots, hailing from Immokalee Florida.

I don’t know where that is but its probably full of football fields.

Toots, on the other hands, is harnessed out of the semen of dead lifeforms!

At the combine Alexander didn’t run the 40 but or really any drills at all except the bench where he benched 225 pounds 11 times.

At the Saturn New Products Fair, Toots glued an alien’s tentacles to his own pancreas 11 times!

FBC: Russell Atheletic Bowl: Clemson vs. Oklahoma

Let’s face it, if you are an NFL Team you need a Mackenzie Alexander on your roster.

And if you are an intergalactic agent, you need Toots SuperGlue in your spaceship!

Get your Toots SuperGlue now…look for the sexy alien on the label.

StickTootsGlue

Oh…and one more thing now you can get new MAX Toots SuperGlue.

Speaking of which…if Mackensie Alexander was an Alien Weapon of Destruction, he would be a bottle of MAX Toots SuperGlue!

    Piggy,
Normally I would be concerned about a drop off in production for a player like Mario Williams but it would be completely naive to take production at face value.
Mario Williams wasn’t the only Bills DL player to lose quantifiable production (sacks, etc) or express frustration in their roles in Rex Ryan’s 3-4 scheme.
Williams left Texans who went 3-4 and is leaving Buffalo for same reasons.

So does anyone think we should have paid Millertime that sort of money? I don’t.

    • Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

I don’t and not in consideration of what Miami employs (an almost even 2 back utilization system in a primarily passing base offense).
Miami isn’t NE but what do they pay their backs? nothing which is why they dump them all the time and few new ones.

    • Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

Furthermore, this is a good year to find the kind of back Miller was for Miami.
In the interim, Matt Forte seems like the likely stop gap option.

  7. Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

    Piggy,
No question these vets Miami are bringing in are stop gap options …
A team always needs to build through the draft.
The problems in Miami have been that for every FA signing they bring in, the team blows it drafting the eventual rookie that is suppose to replace the stop gap option 2 years down the road.

@RapSheet: More on #Bucs RB Doug Martin’s 5-year, $35.75M deal: $15M guaranteed and $7.25 average over three years. Max value of the deal is $42.5M

    Reply

Yeah, but NE hasn’t had that good of a RB in years. Plus they have lil value for a RB with the way they run their offense thru Brady’s quick dumps.
If Miami is to be more committed to the run, then you need a stud RB. Miller was that guy, homegrown. It’s not the soundest of decisions to let him walk & pay other big money due to position.
Miller was wildly underused and yet still accounted for 10 TD’s & near 1300yds total production.
He’s been the difference in winning many of the 6 that we did, again, severely underused!

  12. D's avatar D says:

Dude GD I won’t ever understand how you can simultaneously talk Miller up as a great back and not admit to yourself he is going to require a lot of money to keep. He is a 7 mil per back in this market, why would he take 5?

    • D's avatar D says:

I also don’t think you are seeing it the right way. It’s not us keeping him, it’s him deciding to stay. He has the leverage

    • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

      I said give him 5yr $30M as compared to Martin’s 5yr $35M, that’s $5M less overall.
Is it over paying? Possibly, but we’ve certainly have over paid for players before who we thought were marquee players.

      • D's avatar D says:

        Im saying its underpaying…..

      • D's avatar D says:

GD what im saying is WE HAVE NO CONTROL OVER HIM STAYING. Miller has a market to get 7 mil, he has multiple teams interested in him. Im saying unless we drop 7+ mil we dont sign him. You keep saying 5 and 6 and im telling you thats fine but you have to convince him to give up money to take those deals,

      • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

It could be if someone throws more money. But I’m now going by the Martin deal, as I think other teams could as well. Martin should be the top of the bar, as he seemingly has proven more.

Given their relative lack of needs as a team thy should just package a future first and maybe a pick or two from this year and trade up unless they just dont like any of the ones this year. Hell even trading up in the second to get a guy at that range would be better than Kaepernick.

Alonso is a hit or miss gamble right now. He can pay off really big and he can fade away into anonymity because of that injury history.
    ——————
Kiko to me is the key piece in the deal and not Maxwell who is average for his position (Kiko is better talent at his position than Byron is at his).

If it works out so be it but the downside risk is that he’s unsigned beyond this season. Either way,
if Kiko does good and earns a good future contract, that’s a good problem.

Kiko finished tied for 14th in the NFL in solo tackles in his rookie year (2013) with 87.

For perspective, Keuchley finished tied for 10th that year with 93 solo tackles.

Kiko had a combined 159 tackles (solo + assists) that season; good for 3rd in the NFL (ahead of Keuchley who had 156 combined tackles).

Again, Kiko was a ILB in a 4-3 system then for Doug Marrone as a rookie and then in the offseason the Bills GM said that Kiko would be moved to OLB (something Kiko didn’t like).

Rex Ryan was probably indifferent with Kiko given the Bills front 7 depth and in combination of a RB need decided to push for a Kiko for McCoy swap.

Kiko also played ILB for Philly in a 3-4 scheme I believe.

On the injury front, Kiko has really 1 major injury to speak of on his record. He tore his ACL in the weight room back in Oregon (not playing football) and missed the entire 2014 season.

He aggravated his repaired knee (grade 2 ACL sprain) in Week 2 of last season and missed Week 3-9 (surgery was not needed).

He didn’t do much statistically between Weeks 10-15 (averaged something like 2.5 combined tackles in that span; nothing greater than 5) but in his last 2 games he had his best output of the season recording 8 combined tackles (5 solo, 3 assists) vs Washington in Week 16 and then 9 combined tackles (8 solo, 1 assist) vs the Giants in Week 17.

I’ve read some reports from Eagles media that said his DC attributed the lack of production due to time missed from 2014 and only 2 games in 2015 (week 1 and 2) and that he expected Kiko to be better in 2016 with a full offseason recovery.

This is what I expect as well.

Why would Mitchell restructure unless we are guaranteeing him more money?
    ———-
I guess you mean Maxwell and not Earl Mitchell.
But anyway, why would Maxwell restructure?
Easy, he’s only guaranteed 11.5 mill going forward and the restructure isn’t to pay less or more but to make that 11.5 mill more cap friendly to Miami (and not what was structured for Philly’s cap).
He’s guaranteed that 11.5 no matter whether he’s in Philly or Miami.

    WOWZA!
Raiders signed G/T Kelechi Osemele, formerly of the Ravens, to a five-year, $58.5 million contract.
Another $1.5 million is available through incentives. $12 million per year would be a lot to pay a guard, but Osemele is likely to take over at left tackle for departing free agent Donald Penn. With Osemele joining LG Gabe Jackson and C Rodney Hudson, the Raiders have the makings of a strong offensive line.

  35. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Rams re-signed WLB Mark Barron to a five-year, $45 million contract.
It’s a pretty penny for a player who only recently converted from safety. Per ESPN’s Nick Wagoner, keeping Barron was the Rams’ “top priority.” Barron had a strong 2015 filling in for Alec Ogletree. Ogletree will man the middle in 2016. Barron is a playmaker, one the Rams are counting on to force fumbles and pick off passes in coverage. The No. 7 overall pick of the 2012 draft has bounced all the way back after it looked like he was going to be a bust.

Ken, the Broncos signed significant FAs the last few years to get to where they are. They didn’t draft their core team. Look at their roster. They bought it. We built more through the draft than they did. They were just better at building a good team than we were.
    —————
Saw this looking back at old comments…

The last sentence is where you are right.

Everyone on Denver’s starting D was drafted by them or signed as a FA except for
DE-Demarcus Ware (cap casualty signing from Dallas), SS-TJ Ward (unrestricted FA from Cleveland), Aqib Talib (unrestricted FA from NE), FS-Darian Stewart (unrestricted FA from Ravens who was only on a 1 year deal in BAL after Rams let him go; originally a RAMS UDFA), ILB-Brandon Marshall (he was signed as a PS player after Jags cut him after training camp in his 2nd yr; developed by Denver into a starter). Basically, 3 were big name free agent signings (Ware, Talib, & Ward).

On offense, they drafted or acquired as UDFA 5 starters (WR-Demaryius Thomas, RB-CJ Anderson-UDFA, C-Matt Paradis, LT-Ty Sambrailo, RT-Ryan Clady who missed all season w/ torn ACL)

The only big namer free agents were Emmanual Sanders (signed over from Pitt who didn’t re-sign him & Peyton Manning. Evan Mathis is a big name I guess but Denver only signed him after injuries prompted the move; he was on the market for a bit as well for others to take. Fins could have signed him I guess but they felt he wasn’t worth the price for whatever reason.
Owen Daniels is a name perhaps but he was previously with the Ravens as a backup to Pitta on a 1 year deal and wasn’t exactly the old TE that was nice in HOU (was waived yesterday).

Former #Lions S Isa Abdul-Quddus has agreed to terms with #Dolphins, source said.

Not a bad signing. He is not all world but he is a serviceable player that we didn’t break the bank for.

  66. D's avatar D says:

Safety we just signed is more a true SS and i think more a depth guy unless we dont get someone else to step up.

  67. dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

@RapSheet: The #Dolphins signed S Isa Abdul-Quddus to a 3-year deal worth $12.75M, source said. He gets $4.25M per year.

Goodbye Miller. There is a guy we drafted, developed and then watched walk out the door. This is no way to run an organization.
    —————
RB are a dime a dozen but all that aside, Miller was paid to play more snaps in Houston than he would have in Miami. I’m glad Miami was prudent given the problems all over the roster that need $ allocation and fixing.

    • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

You can’t say that. Gase likes to run the ball unlike Lazor.
Miller accounted for nearly 1350 all purpose yards the past 2 seasons, & close to 10 TD’s both seasons (19) total. All while being hardly used under Philbin’s watch.

  70. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Abdul-Quddus actually stepped in nicely as an eight-game starter for the Lions last season, grading out as Pro Football Focus’ No. 1 overall safety from Week 10 on after replacing SS James Ihedigbo in the starting lineup. It’s a good get for Miami, as at the very least, Abdul-Quddus will be an asset on special teams. He’ll get the first crack at the starting gig next to SS Reshad Jones.

Lions defense fell apart like Miami’s, so of course he made it into the starting lineup….lol

I’m not buying that guys jersey
look at all those vowels in his name

that’s gotta drive up the price of the jersey….

    Al:
I think Miller was our no. 2 player on O behind Landry. He was a guy who got better every year. He improved as a runner, as receiver and as a blocker. That is the kind of player you keep. That is what the good teams do. They draft guys, develop them and the ones that develop they hold on to. Miller’s contract was not a brake the back contract. I just don’t like when we let guys who have done everything you expect of them to do go for money you could have paid.

  84. uwantwat's avatar uwantwat says:

Ken this is the way of the RB in today’s NFL. Watch us take one in the lower rounds of the draft like we did with Ajaji. We will be fine.Miller got more money than we were prepared to pay, simple as that.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

      ^
      makes a good point
it usually doesn’t work out to keep your RB

      we can’t turn back time
      we failed to use Miller

but RBs usually have a short shelf life

the good news for Miller is he was barely used to our frustration

  85. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

well you overpay in free agency

  86. dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

@RapSheet: For Olivier Vernon and the #Giants, I’m told it’s the biggest defensive end deal in history with the most guaranteed money

  89. finfanrob's avatar finfanrob says:

    so recapping the blog

every player the fins signed the last few days they overpaid and got screwed on but every player on the 6-10 team they lost they screwed up letting that player walk and the team they signed for made a great move.

  90. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Alex Boone’s deal with the Vikings is 4 years 26.8M
I think we could have done that….no?

  91. Ken's avatar Ken says:
