The Wedge Scouting Report: Joey Bosa, DE

Want to know what an Intergalactic Alien does in his downtime?

Exactly what you think he does.

I’m a bullfighter in my off time

WedgeBullfighter2

AHH THE RUSH!!!

You make eye contact with the beast

You dance with the Beast

You WIN

But there is one bull I will never fight…

the dreaded TAU CETI E BULL.

I’m not suicidal…this bull has taken off more tentacles than you can imagine.

Bosa4

Speaking of dangerous beasts, the NFL draft is full of beasts that will dominate opposing offensive lines.

Take Ohio State Defensive End Joey Bosa.

Or better yet…run for your life from Joey Bosa.

This beast has a chance to be the #1 pick in the 2016 NFL draft.

Bosa6

And with good reason, this monster racked up 26 sacks and 51 tackles for a loss in the last three season.

He literally ran over offensive tackles like a bull staring at a red cape.

Truth be told though, even if he never posts a double digit sack season in the NFL.  He will make his presence known in the NFL.

He will do it by stuffing the run …where he is elite!

Bosa5

Bosa doesn’t go around you.  Bosa comes right at you, with a powerful bull rush.  Offensive Tackles end up getting push back into their quarterbacks from time to time.

And his hand technique is something else…maybe its hood technique in his case…

Bosa is a local.  He is from Earth like most of you.  So there is that…

But he has even closer roots to the Dolphins than that.

Like many other prospects this year, he has family ties to the NFL.

Joey Bosa’s dad, John Bosa played for the Dolphins in the 80s.  His uncle is infamous Dolphins bust Eric Kumerow

Joey Bosa attended St. Thomas High School in Ft. Lauderdale, the lauded football school that Michael Irvin, Geno Atkins, Giovanni Bernard, Phillip Dorsett, Lamarcus Joyner, Marcus Gilbert and Brian Picocolo all went to.

Bosa2

You would think they built Bosa in a lab where they make monsters who blow up offensive lines.  He is probably the ideal 4-3 Defensive End at 6-5 275 pounds.

I’ve seen him compared to JJ watt and Jared Allen.  If Bosa has a career ike either of those two he is truly deserving of the #1 pick in the draft.

But rumor has it…he won’t be the #1 pick…and he actually might slide a little bit.

Maybe Bosa even comes back to South Florida to punish Tom Brady.

Bosa3

No matter where he ends up

He is a true destructive weapon.

If Bosa was an Alien Weapon of Destruction, he would be the dreaded TAU CETI E BULL!

Better run!!!

BosaBull

If Bosa is there @13 he is ours! Good morning.

  2. uwantwat's avatar uwantwat says:

Good job Piggy. Bosa first and foremost thought should be “Me gotta kill Brady”, nothing else matters.

  3. Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

Nice job Piggy. I think if we would have stayed at 8 we would have a shot at him, but he’s long gone by 13 IMO.

    • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

Even though the Giants need OL help, I could see them taking him at 10 if he’s still there. JPP is on a one year deal, he could play behind him for a year and take over in 2017.

  4. uwantwat's avatar uwantwat says:

You are probably right Brian but one can hope.

  5. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I think we have a lot of flexibility with the first pick, and really throughout the draft. Making those trades, and picking up the two OL, and signing MW, we can pretty much go with BPA.

  6. dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

If Miami signs Sean Spence I think they make a shocking 1st round pick…Jack Conklin and kick him inside to Guard.

  7. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I don’t really see us taking him, because he wouldn’t start, which is what you should be looking for at #13. I think there’s a good chance he will be there though, because of his poor combine exposing his bustness.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I went back and watched his game tape and it doesn’t show any lack of speed, the combine 40 time means nothing to me. I’m ok with Bosa at #13, then we’d have 3 star RDEs. Seems like they’d find a spot somewhere for him, if he’s playing well.

I wonder what the thoughts are for Dion Jordan? His salary is too high for the lack of what he’s accomplished on the field, but there is talent there, and he can cover Gronk.

  8. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

The cap number for Dion was reported to possibly being lowered a yr ago based on being able to recoup bonus money, but I haven’t heard anything lately.

  9. uwantwat's avatar uwantwat says:

Just a hunch but I think they will keep Dion FF, really there is nothing to lose if he comes good we win big time.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

He’s due over $6M with $3M in dead money, so if that isn’t cleared up, it would be hard to pay him that much money for someone who has Manzieled it for most of his career.

  10. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

All we hear about from the media about Mario Williams is he only had 5 sacks last yr and he was disgruntled, but if he was dropping back in pass coverage a lot how did they expect him to get double digit sacks? And why isn’t OVs 7.5 sacks a concern for a guy making $17M? I know OV had the most pressures, but that’s a stat that isn’t clear. Did he get credit for a pressure when the pass was completed?

  11. uwantwat's avatar uwantwat says:

Give me super Mario any day over OV. Who killed us regularly when we played the Bills?

  12. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I don’t think there is a remote chance that Bosa slides to Miami. No way, even if teams 1-12 don’t see him as a fit someone will trade up to get him. Combine numbers be damned. Watch the tape!

  13. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Although being the son and nephew of busts does not bode well.

  14. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I wrote this before we traded down to 13 guys

    FYI

It’s seems impossible now that bosa would be available for us

  15. uwantwat's avatar uwantwat says:

Rock….I reckon you are way too harsh on Bosa. Just because his rellies had problems doesn’t mean he will. Today’s medical is night and day from when they played.

  16. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

The jets have struck back with a vengeance signing Matt Forte after losing Chris Ivory. Here’s another example of media hype. Really, a 31 yr old RB? He had over 1800 yrds from scrimmage in 2014, but only had a 3.9 yrd ave. on his 1038 yrds.

  17. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Steve

Forte is an excellent RB. Don’t underestimate him. CHI just wanted to see what they had in Langford, but Forte is a great all around back. I’ve watched him closely the last few years, I had him in FF. He does it all, and he will help the Jets a lot.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

He has slowed down a bit, but the point was we get shit for the Mario signing, because of his age and only having 5 sacks last yr, but the NYers get praised for Forte who is fast approaching over the hill for an RB and OV who had all of 7.5 sacks last yr and signed a monster contract.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

They still have Powell, so the combination will be fine, but it’s not a game changing signing like the media made it out to be.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

He is an excellent back but backs that are over 30 all of a sudden hit a wall.

  18. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

What are they doing in Miami, is all we keep hearing. The trade with Philly seems to have the national media all over us again. Maxwell used properly can be the type of CB that’s needed in the AFC East, we got killed last yr with the puny Grimes going against Marshall and Watkins. Grimes at the salary he was making was more of a liability, because of our division foes.

  19. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Steve

Who cares what they say about Mario? That was a very good signing for us, as long as he plays well. His talent is undeniable.

  20. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Tim

No doubt about 30 + aged RB’s, but he didn’t work that hard, and he’s been lucky not to have any serious injuries, so he should be a good player for the Jets.

  21. Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

    steveccnv says:
    March 12, 2016 at 10:10 am

He’s due over $6M with $3M in dead money, so if that isn’t cleared up, it would be hard to pay him that much money for someone who has Manzieled it for most of his career.
    *
LMFAO@ “Manzieled it”! I agree Steve, there’s no way the bring him back at that number.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Don’t get me wrong, I want Dion to play for us this yr, it just seems like we should be able to recoup some of the money. I really want him to play OLB, it would give competition to Misi and Jenkins. Whatever they do with him it has to be a luxury type thing, because he can’t be counted on.

      • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

Agreed. The talent is there, he just needs to get his head on straight. Maybe Joseph can do that. I’d like for us to use him similarly to how Saban used JT. He should take a paycut just out of principle for how hard he has screwed us.

  22. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

We have a lot of options at #13. There will be plenty of good prospects there. I think we could target one of the top guards in the 2nd rd. We seemed to have met with a lot of them.

  23. Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

I’d like to see us sign Sean Spence, if for no other reason that I would like to throw it in my best buddy’s face.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

He would deepen our LB core and competition for sure. It would also lessen our need to have to go LB early in the draft if we have other ideas.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

me too. When you have lots of depth at LB it seems to make the entire team better, STs also gets a boost, and the team in general is tougher.

  24. BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

    steve,
Just the fact that maxwell is 6.2 makes me feel better for him going against Marshall and watkins. Grimes got toasted by bigger WRs. Remember the packers game when Nelson got that first down on 4th down. He out muscled grimes for that 1st down.

I still think we need to add more CBs this year.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

CB Eli Apple 6-1 200 is a guy we could target at #13.

      • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

Yes, unless Hargreaves is still on the board. The Ohio State prospects are LOADED in the first three rounds. I was watching NFLN the other night and didn’t realize how many players they had projected to go in the first three rounds. It was something like 15-17. Insane.

      • BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

I agree. I think we either go DE or CB. I can see hargreaves or shaq lawson if either is still on the board.

  25. D's avatar D says:

Hargreaves should be the selection of he is there, Lawson or Flloyd would be my backup selection, I think Flloyd would be a really awesome SLB for us

  26. D's avatar D says:

I’d really like it if we wound up with Treolta as our OG. He or Spencer drango are two guys I think would make us a lot more physical

  27. D's avatar D says:

    Tim

For the NFL, Floyd could fit in a 3-4 or 4-3 defense. Sources from 4-3 teams say they would have Floyd play Sam (strongside) linebacker on run downs and rush him off the edge in passing situations. In that role, Floyd would be like Anthony Barr with the Vikings, or Von Miller when the Broncos played a 4-3 scheme early in Miller’s career. “

  28. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

Bosa was consensus #1 until the Combine. Apparently he’s not as good at “gym class” as he is at football. LOL

  29. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

so, I read some articles ripping the Dolphins Free Agency… as if we “dumped” Vernon and signed “old man Williams”. Dumb asses make it sound like cap had nothing to do with it. smh

  30. BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

I can see lawson dropping to us now that the giants signed vernon.

  31. uwantwat's avatar uwantwat says:

Rhino…all that crap with Mike Florio and then his butt buddy Omar goes along with it. You read PFT nearly every picture has the Dolphin player getting beaten. He instructs his writers Gantt and Alper to do the same thing. Mando is not much better but he seems to get what we have been doing this year. Pox on the lot of them I say. Gase and the team will kick butt.

  32. uwantwat's avatar uwantwat says:

    Starts*..I hate missing words.

  33. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

Fins are setting themselves up for BPA. Fill holes with solid starters… the only spots where we likely wouldn’t take if it were BPA are QB and DT (no jokes about TE, K, or P) lol

  34. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Ronnie Stanley is now my choice at #13.

  35. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Stanley may not be there at #13, but if he is, it will help us this yr and for at least the next 4 yrs.

  36. Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

I’d like to see us take a flier in the later rounds on Keith Marshall from Georgia:

  37. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

What are the chances we try to sign Evan Mathis to continue blocking for C.J. Anderson?

  38. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

    steveccnv,
I think Eagles moving to #8 was to be in position to take Stanley. 😦

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

One of the mocks I saw had them taking him, another had them taking Hargraves, which I think is their bigger need.

  39. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

sorry vernon is not worth the contract he got. I’m glad we didn’t pay him that money.
    ———————————
Could not agree Boulder. Don’t want to dog him too much cause I think he was a legit player for us…….but at that price tag?

He played on a D-line with Suh and Wake. I was expecting him to explode, but he didn’t even in the half season before Wake got injured.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

OV was a little banged up early, I think it was an ankle, but he never seemed to have that wow moment. The $17M are based on his pressures, I sure wish someone would come out with a highlight video showing why OVs pressures were so valuable.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I couldn’t find anything on pressures, but for hurries I found this:
Hurries is a statistic kept for defensive players, usually defensive linemen, when they “hurry” the quarterback into throwing the ball before he is ready. Hurries often result in incomplete passes or even interceptions. A hurry is considered to be an important statistic for defensive lineman, almost as important as a sack, stuff, or forced fumble.

OV was 36th with 20 hurries and Suh was 27th with 22.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

So he did about the same as Suh, but Suh plays DT and was getting doubled consistently. But hey — Suh makes more too.

  40. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

    Brian,
can fins block well enough to get “the fastest RB” into the second level? lol Lots of plays on the reel where he’s 10-15 yards downfield untouched! But, no denying that speed. Maybe unnoticed behind Gurley also.

  41. D's avatar D says:

Stanley doesn’t make it past the ravens I don’t think

    • D's avatar D says:

Ravens cut Monroe and they lost osmele in FA

      • Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

yup. Had they resigned Osmele… I wonder if Fins were watching this closely while working on trade with Eagles. The deals were both ‘finalized’ on Thursday. The possible “deal is off” story due to Miami’s medical staff, may have been a stall tactic to see what happened with Ravens.

  42. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Every teams best defender 2015: https://www.profootballfocus.com/blog/2016/01/07/pro-every-nfl-teams-best-defender-this-season/

Miami Dolphins: Olivier Vernon, ED, 92.2

Signature stat: 57 pressures since Week 10 (most among 4-3 DEs)

Under pressure to perform after Cameron Wake was lost to injury in Week 8, Vernon delivered emphatically. Vernon racked up more than 70 percent of his pressure over the final eight weeks of the season, registering at least four pressures and multiple knockdowns (sacks and hits) in each of his last eight games.

  43. BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

    stanger,
That’s what I meant regarding vernon. he was not elite but wanted elite money. he was a solid starter but at that price? no thank you.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Agree that he is overpriced, but maybe we have to factor in the cap and contract inflation that happens ever year. But even with that, still glad they didn’t pay that price (even if the decision might not have been as clear-cut as it is in my, and maybe your, mind).

  44. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

In the FF draft next year…….gonna have my eye on Lamar Miller. Houston might make for a very big year.

    • Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

NO DOUBT. He will get his 20 carries. As long as he does his one cut and goes vertical he could average 5 ypc

  45. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

  46. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

Giants lost an iconic coach. Their offseason is “over compensation” to show fans they are moving in a good direction. (see what I did there, with “over compensation” lol)

  47. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

    LMMFAO!!!!!!!

  48. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

Been messing around getting caught up on my football reading (now that I am allowed) 😉
Walter Football fucking blasted our trade with Eagles… and the Williams signing. I mean complete, unashamed disrespect.

    • Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

      Mullen Iseiha ISH!!!!

      • Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

But do they have to say Lamar Miller left to join a “real NFL franchise”… Now, the accusation of Ross being the new Snyder is one I’ve made myself. However, the Williams signing was NOT a ‘big name’ grab. It was a solid signing at a high profile position for today’s game. Williams can easily be a 10 sack guy… and that certainly deserves the same pay as a starting OL. ya know?

  49. Ken's avatar Ken says:

We will miss Vernon but he was not worth the price tag. He is a good DE but he is being payed to be a great DE and that he is not.

  50. Ken's avatar Ken says:

    Rhino:
Walter Football is right for blasting our trade with the Eagles. Not so much for the players we got but for the compensation we gave up. We overpayed when we were in the stronger bargaining position.

    • Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

I guess Fins thought they were getting in on the Philly ‘fire sale’ (?)

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

It is a fire sale in Philly right now. Philly was committed to getting rid of both Alonzo and dumping Maxwell’s contract. Swapping 5 spots near the top of the draft seems like a lot. They should have been able to do that in the 2nd round. Especially when considering neither player is an elite player.

229: R7P10 OT NICK RICHTER, RICHMOND

  53. dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

    Rhino,
Walter football is the same site that going into the 2012 draft kept saying Ross would force Miami to trade up for RGIII in order to make a splash for an overrated player, but then when the Skins acquired the pick RGIII was then called a great player.

  54. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

    Rhino
they can say whatever they want!
I just don’t have to believe them!!!!!!!!!!

I still think someone we want will be there at 13!

We may not be in a position to trade down because someone wants the QB or OT that’s still on the board @8? Oh Well

My only bitch is that both players have injury issues! I thought we were done with that kind of shit!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Most players have some type of injury they deal with. As of now both are good to go and will be ready for minicamps. Alonso played the last 9 games of the season and Maxwell has a shoulder injury that doesn’t require surgery just healing and he’s already been doing that for a few months.

  55. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

D, I like Floyd. Would be awesome if he could be a good SOLB in our defense and be an edge guy. He blew up the combine.

  56. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Bosa to me will be another Trace Armstrong, whom I really liked. Solid performer, great flashes, but not a superstar.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

      Good comparison. Non-stop motor.

    • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

I like the comparison although I think Bosa’s first step off the edge is much more explosive than Trace ever had. If you told me I’d be getting an Armstrong with more initial explosion….sign me up!

  57. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

    Ken,
I thought the trade was targeting Alonso, anyway. Not sure the history of players with ACL tears two years in a row… does it mean more likely to recur?… does it have to do with how he plays?…
Essentially a Defensive ROY who played 2 games the last two seasons due to separate ACL injuries. I guess it is a High Risk, High Reward gamble. I’ll keep my fingers crossed for high reward. :/

  58. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

so how was Alonso used differently in Philly than in Buffalo …

  59. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

It’s near impossible to avoid players of need & that are available in both FA and even the draft, that don’t have some type of injury in the past or recovering from at present. That’s the physical nature of football.
The trick is knowing where they are at with the injury, age, and a few other factors. Got to be smart about it.

  60. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

So, IF Alonso is going to play the middle… does that remove Ragland as a draft option and target Lee?… IF Alonso is gonna play outside… Ragland still an option? That’s what it seems like.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I’m wondering the same thing. I think we’ll draft the BPA on defense or OL.

    • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Great question! I’d think if Ragland is the BPA at time we pick, then yes, I go get him. Depends who else is there.
That trade with Philly & the signing of Mario really gave Miami some flexibility in the draft.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Grier said their goal was to patch holes in FA so they could go BPA in the draft. He said you don’t want to pass on a potential franchise player because you needed to reach for need. That’s how you do it.

  61. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Alonso had his big rookie year playing inside in Pettine’s hybrid 4-3/3-4. 159 tackles, 2 sacks, 4 INT, 5 PD, 1 FF, 2 FR.

  62. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

If we sign Sean Spence I don’t see us necessarily going LB early. Alonso, Misi, Jenkins, Spence, Hewitt, Vigil, Hull, Johnson and Manning. They’re all under 30 and pretty young. We might go more DE and CB. We signed our other starting safety in Abdul-Quddus.

  63. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Nkemdiche for us in the first?

  64. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

The thing that helped Alonso in Buffalo was that monster DL & interior. We’re building the same thing here: Mario – Suh – Phillips – Ogbah? 😉
Alonso is a good fit in Miami! I pray he stays healthy & can enjoy some great years playing to his potential.

  65. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

we could play him at DE in some down and distance situations.

  66. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Since we signed Isis @ Safety in FA, I wonder if we draft Jihad Ward @ DE. 😆

  67. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

    Nkemdiche weighs 297 @ 6’3, lbs but runs a 4.87 40.

  68. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I like Laswon and Dodd, after all I am a Clemson alum and I like Bullard and Ogbah too, but I think both Elliot and Nkemdiche are HOF talents that we could get. Teams do have 3 talented Rbs sometimes, as you do need 3 to get through the nicks they get in a season.

Imagine a DL of Wake Suh Phillips Nkemdiche and Wiilliams in some situations!!!! Automatic sack and nowwhere for any RB to find a hole either.

    • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Kool stuff. I also forgot about you being a a Clemson alum. What do you think of the other Tigers in the draft like TJ Green, Charone Peake, Jayron Kearse, & Eric McLain ?

      • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Oops, how could I forget BJ Goodson. He’s a guy similar to that Ragland type mold & can be targeted later in the draft to groom behind Alonso.

Yes but OV’s deal could easily give us a 3rd. Armando reported the team feels it is in position to get a 3rd, 4th and 7th next year.

      • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Yeah, I heard that. Would be a first for us in a looooong time. lol

  71. D's avatar D says:

Alonso was in a 3-4 in Philly that in itself likely had an affect on him

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I think the injury set him back for sure. But he’s one of those guys I think can play anywhere.

      • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

I love his sense of coverage in the middle. He reads the Qb well, can float backwards in the box easily, then great burst to the ball.

  72. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I think Charone Peak could become a real star … he is 6’2 209 and runs a 4.45 40. He was underutilized at Clemson due to so much talent on the field (Watkins, Hopkins, etc.)

  73. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

BJ Goodson might carve out a nice career at MLB. I’d take him if we needed one. He ran a 4.69 and had 2 INT and 14 TFL and 5.5 sacks last yr. High football IQ. A bit stiff but hits like a truck.

    • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

That’s my thoughts. Pass on Ragland now that we have Alonso, & a guy like him in the 4th or 5th round to develop.

  74. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

GD, I guess the comp picks could change if we sign a few more guys in FA but I think the big contract makes a big difference and we didn’t sign anyone to anywhere near what OV got. Maxwell and Williams don’t count because they were not UFAs, one was a trade and the other an off the street signing. 🙂

    • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

It’s a good plan so far by, dare I say it….Tbomb….lol & of course Grier.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Tbomb is aggressive but he is calculated for sure. Grier is in line with his thinking and you’re seeing a move towards bigger more physical players at some spots.

  75. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I think both the Clemson safeties are legit NFL prospects. (Green and Kearse) I don’t think they were to blame for the loss to Alabama where that TE kept getting open and won the game for them. I think that was the fault of that true freshman Clemson had to play at CB when Mackenzie Alexander re-tweaked his hammy.

That’s the trouble with a small school like Clemson…they are always just one key injury away from disaster because they can never get 3 deep quality like an Ohio State or even Florida State.

    • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Yeah, I saw when Alexander went to the locker room & then Cocker kept exploiting that side. Better safety help would have been nice tho. 😉

  76. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

While I am annoying everybody with Clemson posts, our new guy Byron Maxwell is not only a Clemson guy but was born in my hometown of Charleston SC. Officially NCharleston, but that is a political technicality.

  77. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

As soon as Alexander went out, you could see Satan’s eyes light up as the kid came on to replace him. St. Nick is not gonna miss an opportunity to exploit that. The TE was hardly ever used during the season until the national championship game and then boom he is their big star. Coaching rules.

  78. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I was born on the same island as Roddy White, but my dad grew up right in the old historic section of the city between the two rivers. btw my father played end for Charleston High on the same team with the original Clay Mathews … the current Clay’s grandfather.

  79. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Tim, I think many of us lose site of the fact that Tbomb is a young guy & is still learning, evolving if you will. I like a guy that learns from his mistakes and can refocus. A Lot of the older GM & football execs don’t do that. They stay in a pattern…Tuna anyone? ;).

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Yeah he’s a business man and has been around football for a long time at different positions. He knows how this league works especially being an agent and understanding markets and how the game is played. Too many people hold his feet to the fire because of extending Sanchez but that’s not the only thing he’s ever done. LOL

His Jets team went to back to back AFC championship games with Sanchez as a rookie and 2nd year QB. I’ll sign up for that right now. LOL

  80. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

The old guy was born in the same year as my dad and has since moved back to Charleston in retirement. My father studied boxing under Clay Sr’s father Matty Matthews and became a welterweight Golden Gloves champ on some level as a teenager. He also coached his son and my dad in Little League baseball (he was baseball coach at The Citadel which is on the same street where I once lived). My dad went to Clemson to play right field, but took a ball in the eye and back then glasses were real glass, and he had to get over a hundred stitches and never regained enough sight to hit after that, so he had to quit baseball.

    Naples

    I don’t know about depth
But in terms of raw talent
I think Clemson has been the 2nd most talented school in the country the last few years

The most talented team in my eyes is LSU
But Clemson is not far behind

This year they are putting out a ton of talent

If you ask me the teams with the most talent the last few years are
    1. LSU
    2. Clemson
    3. FSU

I guess I should give schools like Oregon, Ohio State and Alabma credit
But I think some of those other schools I mentioned have had more talent

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

OSU has 15-17 prospects in the top 3 rounds. That’s sick!

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

        This year they are incredible

        If it was just 2016
I would say Ohio state is #1

But if you look at guys in the pros making an impact

LSU and Clemson have been really impressive

  82. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Piggy, being that you’re a LB whore lol, how do you feel about this?

“If we sign Sean Spence I don’t see us necessarily going LB early. Alonso, Misi, Jenkins, Spence, Hewitt, Vigil, Hull, Johnson and Manning. They’re all under 30 and pretty young. We might go more DE and CB. We signed our other starting safety in Abdul-Quddus.”

We would have 9 LBs if we signed Spence which I hope we do. That’s enough for camp even though we probably add 2 more.

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Carrying 9 LBs is certainly doable and that is a fairly nice 9 if we sign Spence.
Chris McCain is also listed as a LB.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

      Well

The big 1st rounder I wanted was Jack

But that’s probably not going to happen

      After Jack
      I like Lee

But I don’t see the other early guys as impact guys

The reality is any of those guys – any of them, can be cut in TC

So I’m still a fan of drafting LBs

      I’m still a LB whore…lol

  83. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I also have Elliot and Nkemdiche as 2 of the special talents in this draft

I think the best are arE Ramsey, Jack and Tunsil

But all 3 probably gone before 13 (or 8)

    I really like Nkemdiche

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I agree and throw Bosa in there. He’s going to be good if not great. That’s why I think we were willing to swap down, there’s 5 guys who would never have made it to #8 so we said no problem. We wouldn’t have done that if we thought otherwise.

  84. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I like Darian Thompson of Boise State at S (19 INTs !!!!!) (only a 4.69 40 though) but the guy I like best especially if he falls to the 4th round is the kid out of Maryland … Sean Davis @ Safety not CB. He destroys people on tackles and runs a 4.46 40.

  85. D's avatar D says:

I’d still like a guy like Deion Jones as a lb prospect and yeah Naples a guy like charone Peake. I have been talking him up as a later round pick for a while, he and demarcus Robinson

  86. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

We do need a 4th WR so getting a rook in there to learn and grow is a good idea in a year like this. Hazel can be our 5th WR or we can get one that also is a good KR home run threat.

  87. D's avatar D says:

Nkemdiche is a rate talent kinda guy, very versatile and just unmanageable when he is going all out. I think he will have to be mentored though. He would benefit a lot from a vet like Williams or wake.

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I think having Williams, Suh, and Wake in the same room will keep him in line. Those are some SERIOUS pros there not to mention some badass dudes and that DL coach we have is a no nonsense guy that the players love as well.

My first round choice is between Nkemdiche and Elliott. You do not get many chances to draft a bona fide Hall of Fame talented player. CJ Anderson is a stopgap bridge for us.

We can get William Jackson at the top of the second maybe to play CB.

  88. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

DeMarcus Robinson is a spoiled brat Diva plus he only ran a 4.59, so that is not fast enough to outweigh getting suspended 4 times by two different coaches.

  89. Ken's avatar Ken says:

Isn’t Nkemdici the guy that jumped out a window while dusting?

  90. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Lots of top DE’s & OLB’s in this draft. CB’s not so much. I really see Miami going CB in the 1st round especially if Hargreaves is there @ #13

  91. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I think Hargreaves is a good player and I would not be angry if he is our pick, but is he a good bet to be All Pro? I would like to draft a guy in the first who has all Pro potential.

  92. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Bears signed ILB Jerrell Freeman to a three-year, $12 million contract with $6 million guaranteed.
He can earn another $2 million via incentives. The Bears placed a major emphasis on upgrading at inside linebacker, landing both of the top free agent ILBs available with Danny Trevathan also joining Chicago on a four-year, $24.5 million deal.
    _______________________
WOW, great deal on Freeman….sheesh. Hope Alonso works out.

  93. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Free agent OT Kelvin Beachum will visit the Jaguars Monday.
A previous report had Beachum visiting Seattle. Jacksonville’s interest in Beachum is another sign the coaching staff isn’t sold on Luke Joeckel. Beachum has also been linked to the Jets and Baltimore.
    __________________________
I had hopes of signing a guy like Beachum. Hopefully Bushrod can be that guy too.
I remember all the guys wanting Luke Joeckel real bad. Goes to show you, it’s not where you pick #3, #8, #13….it’s WHO you pick.

  94. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    Ken

He fell out of the window while he was drunk
And they found a bag of weed on him

    I don’t know what dusting is😮

    • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

He was dusting up the parking lot…lol.
I’ve never been that excited by him. Don’t get all the hoopla.

  95. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

    He’s unblockable.

  96. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Since we’re all thinking, I think we could trade down again and target Eli Apple. Two big boundary corners along with Maxwell. That would be a direct move to match up in the division against bigger WRs.

VJ said, to him top 10 defense is about pass rush and coverage on the outside.

    • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Apple really appeals to me. It’s guys like him that make a guy like Bosa do well.

      • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

So, yes, that’s why VJ wants wants both. Both soo effectively compliment each other, making teams more one dimensional & be able to get ya off the field on 3rd downs!!!
