A Look at our Cornerbacks – 2016

If there was a unit out there on our defense that made our LB’s look like they weren’t the worst unit of our defense, it was the secondary, more specifically, the CB’s.    Even the once vaunted Brent Grimes had his ups and downs, and there were enough downs (wife Miko included) to wave goodbye to #21, and really leave this CB corps very thin.  We got our starter in the Byron Maxwell/ Kiko Alonso trade, in which we swapped first RD placement with the Eagles, moving down from #8, to #13.

Byron Maxwell

At the moment, before the draft, we basically have 2 starters, Byron Maxwell, and it’s clear he prefers the right side of the field, so we’ll have to wait and see how this shakes out, but either way, we have a starter on the perimeter, and we have good ole Bobby McCain, who most likely is our nickel CB who will man the slot WR.  Behind Maxwell, we have Jamar Taylor, who has yet to show he can handle the rigors of a full season, let alone a full season as a starter.  He has shown flashes of being a legit player, but he has also been roasted and toasted and simply ineffective.  We have the promising young WR convert to CB Tony Lippett, who brings some size to this unit at 6’2″ 192.  He showed some potential last season, but it’s hard to say how far along this conversion at the moment, and if he’s ready to assume a starting role.  My guess is he’s still a work in progress.  We also have CB/S Walt Aikens, who also has good size at 6’1″ 205, and he will be working at both CB and S in training camp and pre season games, and I suppose they will try to lock down where he’s best.

Although I’m not at all pleased with the depth at LB, certainly not the 3 they intend at the moment to line up opening day if no further moves are made, Jenkins WOLB, Alonso MLB and Misi SLB.  If the only change we’re going to make to a unit that couldn’t get out of their own way, but gladly stepped aside for opposing RB’s and TE’s is Kiko Alonso, who has yet to regain the form (and health) he enjoyed his rookie season in Buffalo, which now is 3 years removed at the start of the new season.  I know some of you, and you know who you are, feel comfortable with this setup, but I remember how awful we were last year, and simply swapping Alonso for Sheppard doesn’t cut it for me.

Back to the CB’s.  Here are some of the guys available to us in the 2016 NFL Draft that can come in and be a perimeter starter right away, which is precisely what we need!

Vernon Hargreaves

There’s a chance that Florida CB Vernon Hargreaves III will still be there at pick #13.  Hargreaves may be the best all around CB in this draft.  He’s not a big CB for today’s standards at 5’10” 204, and he’s not blazing fast either, running a pedestrian 4.5 in the 40. He is however, a true cover corner, and he has elite skills in that regard.  He is a very competitive player, and he would surely be starting for the Dolphins this season if we draft him.  Hargreaves 39″ vertical is outstanding, so he can get up there to compete for the ball with bigger receivers.  His 3.98 in the short shuttle shows he has that quick twitch speed and burst, a must for a good CB, perimeter or slot.

Capital One Orange Bowl - Clemson v Oklahoma

Clemson’s Mackensie Alexander is another possibility.  Alexander is a fiery, confident player at CB who was rarely challenged.  You might be concerned that he has zero INT’s, but when a guy doesn’t get thrown at very often, that sometimes is the result.  Mackensie is similar in size to Hargreaves at 5’10″190.  Again, not one of those big CB’s, and he his pro day numbers are also similar to Hargreaves, 4.47 40, 37.5″ vertical, a 4.21 short shuttle, which is not as quick as Hargreaves.

William Jackson III

I know some folks on this blog (and others) are in love with this CB,  Houston’s William Jackson III.  Jackson is a little taller than the previous 2 at an even 6’0″ 189.  A little more of a wiry frame than the previous 2, but a very good prospect nonetheless.  Very smooth operator, Jackson also has the elite speed for a CB.  His 4.37 at the combine was one of the best, but oddly enough, at his pro day, he ran the short shuttle at 4.32, which seems odd, considering his fast 40 time, and his impressive 6.86 in the cones drill.  Jackson led all of college football in passes defended, with 5 INT’s and 23 pass break ups.  Impressive!

There are a few other prospects that will be in play, but in my mind, these are the 3 guys that I think we might target to be our starter.  Other CBs we may be interested in are Miami’s Artie Burns, Baylor’s Xavien Howard, Alabama’s Cyrus Jones, Northern Iowa’s Deiondre Hall, and Virginia’s Maurice Canady.  There are actually more, but these are the ones that hit me today.  Feel free to discuss and add more to the list!

Wait what? We signed DT Infinity again? Wooooooooo hooooooo! Superbowl here we come!

  2. Brian in NY says:

DT3. Huh. Didn’t see that coming.

  3. uwantwat says:

Has had a better career than Pead to date. Draft another RB and let them duke it out.

I’m on the 2nd book now, really starting to dig it now. I pretty much only read during my lunch and dinner breaks which basically gives me about 5-10 minutes of reading time. Good books.

    D-bolt

C’mon man, it’s kind of funny that DT3 is back. You have to admit that

    • dbolt48 says:

I think it hilarious he’s back, but have you seen the crazy uproar????? I just find it funny people going nuts thinking he’s going to be our bell cow vs an OTA/TC body😂

      • Mike E. says:

The overreaction is silly, but that just comes from years of disappointment, and w/o a general understanding of how meaningless this move really is, unless, as it sometimes happens, the timing is right, the planets are in alignment, and DT3 actually finds himself.

      • dbolt48 says:

Figure it this way….Peopele get to enjoy him running around w/ his crazy ass helmet again😂

  7. Mike E. says:

I was just reading an article that Mando wrote about DT3. Such hyperbole. What if DT3 earns his spot on the roster? If he does, then he should be on the roster.

    http://miamiherald.typepad.com/dolphins_in_depth/2016/04/the-return-of-daniel-thomas-isnt-good-news-for-the-dolphins.html

  8. Tim Knight says:

LOL, we actually did sign DT3? I made a joke about it a few weeks ago.

Some of the moves we’re making are filling out the roster acquisitions. I wouldn’t get too up or down about them.

  9. Mike E. says:

    Tim

We had to bring back DT2 for the 3rd time so he can live up to his DT3 moniker. lol

  10. Mike E. says:

    Omar Kelly

Lou, does it give you pause that you are in total alignment with this man? 🙂

  11. Tim Knight says:

Dolphins sign TE MarQueis Gray. That’s it for depth at TE? LOL

    • Mike E. says:

I was reading an article about that yesterday, and it intimated that he “may” have to take a backseat to Jordan Cameron. Seriously, ya think? How about Dion Sims and Stoneburner too!

  12. Mike E. says:

    Tim

Omar’s hated Tannehill from the second we drafted him, you know that. He resented him big time when Tanny stepped in for the injured Garrard, and shattered his dream of a black QB leading the Miami Dolphins.

  13. Tim Knight says:

    Mike, nice olive branch offering.

    • Mike E. says:

I spoke to M13 recently via e-mail. I’m not a “stand on ceremonies” type of person. I still like those guys honestly. We had a disagreement, I can certainly look past it. I wouldn’t have judged if they couldn’t, that’s up to each individual. Everyone is different, I get it.

  14. uwantwat says:

These signings are merely roster fillers. None of us should get our hopes up. Bring on the draft already.

    • Tim Knight says:

It’s a numbers game. We’ll see the churning begin after the first minicamps. Guys aren’t in shape or don’t seem motivated etc.

    • jetsssuck says:

I don’t know about that since we are having the fsu kicker having a try out for the draft. We could very well draft the fsu kicker kid that is projected to go in the 1st or 2nd round.I can see the new importance of having a strong and accurate leg with the rule changes. Sabistan with the Oakland Raiders was the last kicker that was drafted in first round.

      • Tim Knight says:

The 1st or 2nd rd? Franks was really good last year by the way. He has a huge leg.

      • jetsssuck says:

I personally wouldn’t draft a kicker in any round but the fins are having him in for a try out before the draft today.

  15. Mike E. says:

I can’t wait for the draft. I think most of us will be happy with this one.

  16. Mike E. says:

    Franks? lol

  17. Tim Knight says:

jetsssuck, due diligence. We’re not drafting a kicker in the 1st or 2nd rd. No team should. To me no earlier than 5th rd for kickers and punters.

  18. uwantwat says:

    LMAO @ the leg.

  19. uwantwat says:

I was reading a mock draft on NFL.com (4 rounds), was astounded to see this jerk, Reuter I think it was gave us that PK in the 4th. I thought WTF are you stupid or what. Moron proof right there. At least the real Talking Heads put out decent music.

    • Tim Knight says:

Does he not realize that Franks was really good last year. So was our punter Darr both on the cheap. Yeah let’s spend a draft pick now on a kicker. LOL

  20. wyoming85 says:

This has to be an April fools joke right?

DT3 is someone Gase is familiar with as well as him being familiar to our team. He was on the Bears PS team last year. He probably is just a camp body with same potential he had previously of making the team.

  22. Brian in NY says:

  24. getterdone says:

    G’d moanin my favorite martians

  25. getterdone says:

    WOW

Notre Dame LB Jaylon Smith (ACL, LCL) says his rehab is “going great.”
“I am leg-pressing over 600 pounds right now,” Smith said. “I am squatting over 400 pounds. I am getting that strength back. It’s just a matter of time.” It’s good news after Smith’s gruesome Fiesta Bowl injury, but the Combine medical recheck looms extremely large for his draft stock. It’s there that teams will determine the extent of his nerve damage in addition to his torn ligaments. Once a potential top-10 pick, Smith is in danger of a draft weekend free-fall.

    • Tim Knight says:

He’s got to show agility – running and cutting though. This is just part of his rehab and it’s very stationery though I give the kid credit for working his ass off. I don’t think he’s going to answer enough questions by the time of the draft to get back his 1st rd status though.

      • getterdone says:

Yeah, i get that with the running. But the nerve damage can’t be too severe & be able to push all that weight. I’ve had knee injuries playing and getting back to squatting with any significant weight was tough.

  26. Tim Knight says:

Omar is going to report on sneakers in the fashion section of the SS? LOL

    • getterdone says:

He’s part of the problem that designer sneakers are so expensive & the cult culture of them with kids that look up to what adults are doing.

  27. Mike E. says:

So Omar is going to cover the Miami Heat and NBA basketball? Awesome! Maybe we can get a more level-headed columnist to follow our team, one w/o an agenda.

  28. getterdone says:

    Omar’s next gig

  29. New Age says:

Lol@ Omar having to deal with shit since that’s all he posts anyways.

The problem I have with Pead, DT 3, etc is they cost a couple hundred thousand more than UFAs rookies and already have a history of not working out anywhere. So, you are spending more money on guys that you know deep down inside…just aren’t good enough. Why couldn’t we have offered Anderson $2 more and be in better shape?

    • getterdone says:

Seems the CJ Anderson offer was a calculated risk that didn’t work out as planned. I’m sure Tbomb has taken Aponte over his knee for losing that one.

    • Tim Knight says:

If those guys don’t make the team their salaries go away. It’s really just peanuts. If they perform well they’ll on the cheap.

      • getterdone says:

Right, so when is the first date coming up to be required to be under Cap?

      • dbolt48 says:

Really doesn’t matter, there’s probably zero guarantees and if a better UDFA comes along they get cut for the young guy.

  30. Tim Knight says:

GD, it doesn’t matter because the contracts are likely very low and not guaranteed.

    • getterdone says:

preachin at the choir, but thanks for reconfirming. There’s so much going on with all the workings of the Cap system that it gets confusing to us all at times.

Ya got to get 90 to camp anyhow. I wonder where this puts us? Still room for 8 draft picks and some UDFA’s I’m sure.

      • Tim Knight says:

I just counted our roster on the official site and they have the 3 new guys on there and we’re at 76. Not counting Dion FF. So we have plenty of open spots before TC.

      • getterdone says:

        Cool, I thought so, thanks!

  31. Mike E. says:

    Tim

How long did it take you to count the guys on the roster? lol

  32. BoulderPhinfan says:

Little marco wants to work for the phins. LOL. sure why not

Marco Rubio wants to work for the Dolphins

  33. Tim Knight says:

GD, are you saying that Marco has danced with the purple headed warrior? LOL

  34. Mike E. says:

    GDP

Nope, I hadn’t heard that about Lil Marco.

    • Tim Knight says:

I did a quick search and it was similar to Ted (Ben Stiller) getting busted at the gay meeting park in Something About Mary. Rubio was 19 at the time.

  35. getterdone says:

Lions signed RB Stevan Ridley. See this was my rant last nite. Why Pead & DT3 when you had guys like Ridley, Hillman & others still out there….Oh well.

  36. Mike E. says:

    GDP

NE made Ridley look good. He was disposable.

    • getterdone says:

That’s no secret. So your point is Pead & DT3 are just as good or better since we signed them & not him or Hillman or others still in FA?

  37. Tim Knight says:

So Marco Rubio desires a salty sea dog?

  38. I think the Anderson offer was as good as it was going to get for a player of his caliber and they were comfortable with losing out if Denver matched because they weren’t going to go any higher. They had a number in mind and stuck to it. The bonus money that would have been paid up front was pretty significant for a guy who was going to split carries with Ajayi.

  39. D says:

I could give a shit if Jaylon Smith says everything is fine, he kinda needs to so he can get drafted higher, i dont think however its going to mean anything to NFL evaluators who have Dr’s reports to the contrary. I would consider us mega fools to draft him anywhere above the 4th round. We have too many needs to where our draft has to pay off to be taking chances on a guy who’s career may never take off in the NFL. We do not need to be taking major risks with our top few picks this year.

  40. Tim Knight says:

    LMAO!!!

  41. Al in MIA says:

It’s ok guys now that the Dolphins FO feels they can fix broken guys with their advanced ‘sports science’.

In fact, Tbaum had this installed the Dolphins facilities just recently:

  42. Mike E. says:

    GDP

I’m not saying anything of the sort. If we wanted to sign Ridley, we would have at least tried.

  43. D says:

I wouldnt e losing any sleep over what RB we are signing and arent signing. Most these guy will be fighting for a roster spot, and isnt being brought in to rely on heavily. Strong suspicion is that since we weren’t able to land the guy(s) we wanted in FA, we are going to draft a guy and have one of these guys along with Williams fight for depth at the position. Not every person they pick up has to be starter material, so whats the gain signing Ridley to not start vs DT3 to not start….i mean other than the extra pay and guarantees?

  44. Al in MIA says:

Even Dawn Aponte is wondering what Tbaum is up to:

  45. Mike E. says:

LOL @ Marco the Magic Unicorn

  52. The Flying Pig says:

They really want those comp picks

  53. Tim Knight says:

GD, NE didn’t really lose any UDFAs this year so they probably won’t be getting any comp picks.

    • getterdone says:

If a nerd can do that in his own basement, imagine where the technology is already headed in the corporate science world & governmental departments like DARPA?

The applications for misuse will not be something that’s going to be fun for many.

Scary shit. Society is becoming more creepier by the week!

  54. Tim Knight says:

Yeah I wonder what else he’s going to do with it. LOL
    http://nypost.com/2016/04/01/man-makes-himself-his-very-own-life-sized-robot/

  55. Tim Knight says:

GD, weapons being misused haven’t been fun for many. You’re not going to stop technology. This is life on earth, this is how it’s suppose to happen. Societies have been creepy forever.

    • getterdone says:

Agreed, but now it’s not primitive weapons and limited range. It’s now ramping up to be something unlike man has ever seen. Hmm, spoken about in Revelation and other biblical prophecies from the old testament to the new. But I’m sure it’s all just a big series of coincidences. 😉

  56. sb7mvp says:

I don’t remember anything about robots in the bible. There’s a lot about false prophets though.

    • getterdone says:

Well it does have scripture on man’s quest to not just be happy with God, but to try and become godlike, to make himself a god.
Also, correct, there is scripture teaching to beware of deceivers and apostasy. That’s organized manmade religion and self serving ministries / leaders. In the book of Matthew they are referred to as snakes & a brood of vipers.

    • Tim Knight says:

Well there’s good reason for that. It was over 2,000 years ago and they didn’t have that sort of technology. LOL

    getterdone says:

Right, so when is the first date coming up to be required to be under Cap?
    —————————————————————–
Once the league year starts in March, the top 51 contracts count against the cap, you have to stay under the cap at all times, that’s why Denver waited so long to match, they were working on contracts to stay under the cap..

    • Tim Knight says:

But players get game day checks. I don’t think they get paid now other than a signing bonus.

      • steveccnv says:

They don’t What does that have to do with the cap?

      • steveccnv says:

Who falls under the Salary Cap?

Answer: The “Team Salary” falls under the Salary Cap. Team salary includes the amount a team must pay its current or former players under their player contracts. Notice emphasis on the word PLAYERS. The salary cap does not apply to coaches, assistants, trainers, and other personnel. Only the top 51 player salaries for a team count against the salary cap in the offseason. (Outstanding tenders apply.) During the season, all player salaries count toward the salary cap.

  58. steveccnv says:

DT3 is really not camp fodder, for starters Gase had him in camp last yr and likes him, and he can run between the tackles, something Damien can’t do. He has poor vision, but he can be useful in the right situation.

He may not make the final 53, but we should expect a better RB to make it, if it isn’t him. LaMike was our 3rd RB last yr to start the season when Ajayi was out. I’d take DT3 all day over him.

    • New Age says:

Except they cut him before the year started and didn’t resign him. That sounds like the epitome of camp fodder.

      • steveccnv says:

I wasn’t talking about the Bears, I was talking about now. Gase isn’t going to bring him in just to waste his time. He’s our 2nd best RB right now.

Right on Tim….they didn’t, yet they did their best to describe the visions of inspiration they were receiving from God, and they fact that so much of the bible & bible prophecy has been fulfilled it really brought me from being a non-believer to becoming a belive. Now I try to read, study, & research often, as well as pray constantly for discernment (what is right, what is wrong) of the word among other daily prayers.

Part of this thing about robots, artificial intelligence, humanoids, genetic cloning, altering God’s DNA, hybridization, man’s striving for biological immortality in his quest to not need God, to live forever as he is presently, and to become god himself.

Some point to this scripture as the coming singularity and of the beast, an anti-Christ in Revelation 13: 15
And he had power to give life unto the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak, and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed.

  60. getterdone says:

This is interesting. we play the Browns in Miami this season. So we could be facing RG3.
Also weird is Mike Shanahan saying RG3 made the choice to move to a more conventional offense. Seems HC would have had the say there, unless Snyder was all into his wonder boy at the time???
    ________________________________
Former Redskins coach Mike Shanahan believes incorporating read-option and play-action into the offense will be the key to Robert Griffin III’s success in Cleveland.
Shanahan and Griffin III butted heads during their time together in Washington but it appears the two have mended fences. Griffin III recently called Shanahan to thank him for recommending him to Rams coach Jeff Fisher, though he didn’t sign with Los Angeles. Shanahan still has faith in his former signal-caller. “There’s no way that this guy can’t be successful if he goes back with the mindset he had as a rookie,” said Shanahan in an interview with WTEM in Washington. “He was able to take advantage of play-action and do things that no other quarterback has been able to do.” Shanahan said the decision to move from a pistol, zone-read attack to a more conventional offense in 2013 was Griffin’s choice, not his. It will be interesting to see what schemes the Browns come up with for RG3, though his best chance for success will probably come in an offense that heavily emphasizes play-action.

GD, I’m better off taking a pass with the biblical stuff. I don’t subscribe to it at all.

    Let’s talk RBs instead. 😉

Who do you feel is a good fit for us from the draft and in what round? So do we go 2nd or 3rd for a back? What if Ajayi wins the main role as a former 5th rd pick last year due to a future debilitating knee issue when he was actually a 2nd rd talent? LOL

    Personally I love Alexander
And if I knew he would be available in the 2nd
I would probably go OL, DE or LB in the first round

  66. Tim Knight says:

Piggy, I wish you well with your entrepreneurial ventures. You’re living the American dream. The pursuit of happiness. That’s what it’s all about. Not subsidizing. It’s not fair to the achievers. It’s really not. People earn their way in this country through hard work and sacrifice. It’s become a negative vibe through politics and propaganda and it needs to stop. People who venture out and try to make something happen should not be punished at the expense of squalor’s who do nothing to better themselves.

Life on earth never mind America is not a free lunch. Nothing is free. Never has been. That’s the new millennials running wild. Someone always pays for it in some way. Stop being an idiot!!! LOL

Piggy, great to hear you’re surviving the jump to being your own firm, self proprietor. kudos!
Also, good stuff on Nick Kiawotski. He was a shinning guy on a poor defense. he was everywhere he could be. Imagine him behind a guy like Suh or Phillips.
I also like Artie Burns a lot too. Big do it all corner.

Tim, I get ya. But I was just responding to your responding….lol I pray that one day you have something that opens your eyes to it. There’s so much there that blows me away. It gets really deep, way beyond what most preachers even know themselves cause they don’t study the word in depth. It’s just all cutesy feel good bible stories like ya hear as a kid in sunday school, and tickle your ear messages of motivational type speakers like Joel Osteen.

I dug in deep for the meat & potatoes. When I approach something, I totally investigate wholeheartedly.

In the meantime, keep being the wonderful person you are, and that you’ve shared here. That’s a big part of the word, so you’re more than halfway there brother….lol. All good, keep being you, keep persevering and overcoming the strife of the world man. I know you are/will!

My eyes are pretty open and biblical tales are outdated for me. Sorry but they are. I don’t subscribe to prophecy, I deal with happenstance. I watch evolution speed up due to knew knowledge and evolution.

It’s not going to slow down or change in your view, it’s going to get faster. Adaptation. It is life. I can’t deny what I see everyday. Why keep going back 2,000 years? It makes no sense. In the big scheme of things would you ever go back beyond “we already figured that out, while trying to survive, but let’s ignore that we know you have better tactics?”

      In 1972 I’m gonna use 852 ideas, then in 2016 I’ll use 1,019. WTF?!!!!

      • getterdone says:

It’s not about going back 2000yrs. It’s a book of history, learning from that history, present living & how to, and the future, what it holds.

I don’t believe in evolution in the classical sense, the darwin BS, but yes, over time living things adapt to environment etc.
Anywho, not trying to force anything on ya. Just sharing ideas & experiences, of which I’ve barley scratched the surface…lol…I know the same for you as well.

Have a good night my friend.

  68. Instead of the Phins brass or Gase, for that matter, being focused on “fixing” Tannehill what they should focus on is upgrading the talent on the defense and running the ball effectively. Tannehill has thrown for more than 4,000 yds these past two seasons and in order for him to put up 4,500 yds and 30+ td’s he’s going to need to be throwing it 40+ times/gm and that’s not realistic. I think if he was throwing it that much I don’t know if you’d see those types of numbers because if he IS throwing it that much I think the td’s and yards aren’t going up but the incompletions and mistakes will go up instead.
Take the ball out of his hands, Have him throw only about 30 times/gm instead and run the ball more. Stay committed to the run. If they ran the ball another 7 to 8 times/gm they would average about 121 yds/gm which puts them in the top 10 to 12 rushing teams in the league. They need to be putting up those types of numbers rushing for this offense to work. Doing that will take the onus off Tannehill to do something that he doesn’t need to be doing and gets us back on track on offense. Tannehill was never meant to be a 4,500 yd/yr passer putting up 30+ td’s a year. If we run the ball better and we can put together a more competitive defense and Tannehill throws 23-25 td’s a year with passing yds around 3,500 or so per year we will probably be more competitive than with him throwing the ball more often.

  69. Okay, so I’ll give you guys Ragland in the first if you’ll give me Kenneth Dixon in the 2nd.

Apparently Alexander needs Viagra at a very young age!

Fair offer, I must say. I get my 1st RD pick, and you get your 2nd RD pick. Make it happen, and I’m in.

Get me Ragland and possibly Burgess and I’d be happy as hell. Burgess is a player that Miami has shown a lot of interest in.
