A Look at Our Offensive Linemen

Tannehill on ground

Quite a familiar sight for Dolphins fans, really since Tannehill has been the QB.  I know some of you think it’s all Tannehill’s fault, and that’s fine, but I for one don’t believe that to be the case.  Too much pressure, too often and no containment.  Seems like almost every drop back, someone loses containment on their man, and over the last 2 seasons, there really were good reasons for that.  Injuries depleted our O-line and the depth we had wasn’t up to the task.  Whether it was Brandon Albert injured, or Ja’Wuan James, or Mike Pouncey, it’s been rare to have those 3 former 1st RD picks on the field together.  One good nugget of info uncovered by the infamous Omar Kelly is this.  When those 3 have been healthy and on the field together, Ryan Tannehill, and the Dolphins are 6-1.  Some will scoff at this small sample, and that’s fine too, people will always see what they want, and contrarily ignore what they don’t.  I think it’s unfortunate that we have such a small sample, and if you think about it, this doesn’t even address the shoddy OG play.  Imagine if we had better OG’s than Dallas Thomas, Billy Turner or Jamil Douglas.  It could happen as early as this season, because the NFL draft is only about 2 weeks away!

First, let’s take a look at we currently have on the roster.  At LT, Brandon Albert is the starter, and OT’s Jermon Bushrod (Bears) and Sam Young (Jaguars) were brought in as depth for both tackle positions, as both of the aforementioned players have played both. At C we have Mike Pouncey, and backing him up is OG/C Jamil Douglas, and Jacques McClendon.  At OG, last years starters were a mix of LG Dallas Thomas and Jamil Douglas, and RG Billy Turner and Jamil Douglas.  At RT, I’m assuming a healthy Ja’Wuan James will return as the starter at RT, now that his dislocated toe injury appears to have healed.  Jason Fox is thankfully no longer on the roster, but my lord, is it about time we shore up the depth at OT or what?  Why every year do we get a turnstile at RT like Marc Colombo or Jason Fox?  Ya think maybe it’s time we invested in some quality depth on the O-line?

The 2016 NFL Draft leaves us with plenty of options, so let’s take a look at some of the players that might help us this season and beyond.  I’m going to put them ALL on the table, because you never know if we want to trade up, although it’s unlikely.

Laremy Tunsil

Ole Miss LT Laremy Tunsil  6’5″ 310

Laremy Tunsil is the premier offensive tackle in this draft, and will most likely go top 5, if not #1 to the Tennessee Titans.  With Branden Albert on our roster, unless they have discussed with Albert moving inside, which Albert has played before to OG, the Dolphins drafting Tunsil is even more unlikely.  He is the best prospect though, actually the highest rated prospect by NFL period, but a Dolphin he will not be.

Purdue v Notre Dame

Notre Dame LT Ronnie Stanley  6’6″ 312

Ronnie Stanley is the next highest rated LT prospect.  Still a slim chance that he falls all the way to #13 but he is in range to be taken somewhere in the top 10, or slightly beyond.  That puts him in striking range for a reasonable trade up should we want him.  Again, unlikely we trade up for an OT, but it’s possible.  Stanley would also not be a candidate to move inside and is really a pure LT.

Jack Conklin

Michigan St. LT  Jack Conklin  6’6″ 308

Jack Conklin is definitely a realistic possibility at #13.  The Michigan St. LT is a real throwback player, spitting nails and exhibiting toughness.  One of my favorite quotes of this whole draft was an NFC North scout, who said about Conklin “He’s tougher than old beef jerky”.    Whether the scouts or prognosticators are right, some feel Conklin might struggle with NFL speed rushers, and may have to either move to RT, or even possibly inside.  Conklin is a real scrapper, which makes me think he’d fit inside the trenches at OG just fine, and could of course give us depth at OT as well.  Yes, quality depth my friends, the luxury we haven’t had for too long!

Cody Whitehair

Kansas St. OT/OG  Cody Whitehair  6’4″ 301

Cody Whitehair has played LT, RT and LG for Kansas St. so he certainly has some versatility.  Most scouts feel he will be an OG in the NFL, so in the 2nd RD, he could be a target for us.  He would be another player that gives us some depth as either an OG or OT, but could give us an upgrade at OG from what we currently have.

Le'Raven Clark

Texas Tech LT Le’Raven Clark  6’5″ 316

Le’Raven Clark is another 2nd RD possibility for the Dolphins.  Clark has the longest arms in this draft at 36 1/8″ long.  Clark has good foot speed, but likely needs to add more muscle and get stronger in the NFL (As many prospects do).  He could be a guy to groom to replace Branden Albert, and be our LT for a decade, so Clark could definitely be a target of ours, if we think he could be what I said.  NFC scouts said they think he’s going to be a top 5 LT in the NFL.  Sounds good to me!

Germain Ifedi

Texas A&M OG  Germain Ifedi  6’6″ 324

Germain Ifedi looks like an NFL ready starter right now.  Ifedi has power, and also has very long arms (36″).  Germain played both OG and RT at Texas A&M.  Oddly enough though, his NFL comparison is our own Billy Turner.  He is a bit of a project though, like Turner, so although he would be thrown into the mix, the 3 year player may not be ready for us right now, but could could be a very good player in time.

NCAA FOOTBALL: OCT 04 Stanford at Notre Dame

Stanford OG  Joshua Garnett  6’4″ 312

Garnett looks to be a pro ready NFL OG.  Very thickly built lower body ideal for working in the trenches, he also has very good upper body strength.  A Stanford OL, again???  I think Garnett will be fine, although I also thought Jon Martin would be fine, so if you want to stop reading the rest of this, I understand.  NFL comparison is Gabe Jackson, who is doing just fine in the NFL for the Oakland Raiders, and a player both D and I wanted for our Dolphins. I could see Garnett winning a starting OG spot this season.

Christian Westerman

Arizona St.  OG  Christian Westerman  6’3″ 298

Westerman is a a very athletic OG, with lots of pop.  Weight room warrior who never stops.  Scouts say some of his actual strength doesn’t always show up on the field, but I would think learning technique from the right coaches would help that.  Westerman is a true OG prospect, and should be taken somewhere between the RD 2-4.  His NFL comparison is Alex Mack, and who wouldn’t want Alex mack on our O-line right now?

There are plenty more prospects out there, and I will leave that for you all to discuss and bring up on the blog!

    Mike,
Very good article. Conklin makes a ton of sense for this team, but Id draft him with the intent of him staying at LG. If they take Stanley that means BA would be kicked inside to LG which would help the team in the quality department, but does it cause a problem with a player being disgruntled because he’s been moved? Between the two I think Conklin offsets BA’s & Pouncey’s weaknesses the best.

It seems as if most OL in college wear knee braces, but more of a protection thing, to prevent injuries from happening.

  6. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    D-Bolt

Yeah, I have no idea how Albert would react if he were to be asked to move inside, but at this point of his career, I don’t think he’s getting another big contract, so it’s not like he needs to protect his brand by saying he’s a LT anymore, it would just make him more of a utility player. Still, he might scoff at it, That’s probably something they’d want to discuss with him before the draft if they had plans on doing something like that.

    • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

They’d definitely have to talk pre-draft about the possible ramifications. But if they did go Stanley they could kick Bushrod to LG as the unquestioned starter so there’s a guaranteed proven vet there and cut BA in June. Not that anyone wants that, but could be worth monitoring if Stanley was the pick.

  7. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Cutting Albert would be rough. I could see them cutting him next year, but doing it this year would be pretty cruel, although Albert would sign somewhere else pretty darn quick.

  8. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    D-Bolt
I like Conklin too, but while LG is important, is not as important as LT, and Albert is likely in his last year or 2, so we need a guy who can take over for Albert either next year, or the year after.

  12. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

I like the possibility of getting our future LT. But Albert is the 800lb elephant in the room.
As Tim often mentions, are we built/set up with the high contracts of Suh, Tanny, & short term high cost vets like Mario, etc, to try and win NOW?

If so, drafting a LT in the 1st may not be the best immediate scenario. As much as I love Conklin & LeRaven Clark, we might have to sit them, or they would get very little rotation unless either really proved to be heads n tails above the rest @ OG.
It’s a conflict that I’m sure has been thought about over and over by our FO & coaches.

The additions of vets like Bushrod, Mario, Branch, Maxwell, Alonso, Isis, does make it easier to be more flexible with a BPA scenario.
So I anxiously await the outcome of the draft as they try to seek that fine balance of drafting for winning now as well as for developing to win in the future.

  13. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Titans acquired picks Nos. 15, 43, 45 and 76 in the 2016 draft as well as first- and third-round picks next year from the Rams in exchange for the No. 1, No. 113 and No. 177 overall picks.
New GM Jon Robinson said he wanted a “King’s ransom” for the No. 1 overall pick, and he got it. All in all, the Titans landed two first rounders, two second rounders and two third rounders for the top overall selection, a fourth rounder and sixth rounder. Tennessee now has six picks in the top 76 of this year’s draft and are set up to have five in the first two days of next year’s draft. Robinson said all of that ammunition gives the team options. “This move does not knock us out of any player, except one,” Robinson said.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I’m surprised the Rams did that. Obviously, they want Carson Wentz, because you don’t trade all that for a regular position player.

    • D's avatar D says:

Still like Tretola for us at OG. I want a guy who is an immovable object and can push the LOS. The best DT’s at Senior Bowl and there were several 1st round evaluation there, couldnt budge him. Even one of the most powerful DT’s there, Jarran Reed couldnt power through him. To me, with OG being driven back into the QB on pass plays being the most detrimental fail in pass pro, a guy like that could really really help us. I dont care if he moves like a cat, just dont let people push you around and be able to drive your guy back. Also from everything i read, Gase runs out of power formation a lot, making the quickness aspect of an OG not a top priority.

  27. D's avatar D says:

Im sure Wentz is their guy. Goff wil likely go to the Browns, this is good for us, pushes someone like Hargreaves down some for us, or Lawson.

  28. dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

@AllbrightNFL: Interesting. Several people out there saying they were told Goff for #Rams. I was told Wentz. Good news is we’ll know here soon

See, I told youse guys so. Cali boy, sell seats, sell hope, suck for 5 more years.

    • D's avatar D says:

My rankings of Pro ready QB’s a few months ago was

      Goff
      Cook
      Wentz
      Prescott

      Now its

      Wentz
      Goff
      Cook
      Presott

and yes thats Dak Prescott before Lynch because he is a more polished and learned QB. He has better football IQ and he has a lot of natural on the field leadership skills. As for Lynch and maybe a guy like Hackenberg, they are just still pretty damn raw, there just isnt any polish there.

As far as ceiling as a NFL franchise QB
      Wentz
      Goff
      Lynch
      Hackenberg

I wouldnt put Prescott or Cook too far off that list they would pretty much be 5 and 6, i just see certain limitations in their game that make me think they could be good but fall short of greatness.

  29. dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

    D,
Agree about the OG position and what we need. They need to correctly offset Puncey & BA.

    • D's avatar D says:

I like Tretola the most for us and then Drango, those guys are beefy strong guys who dont get moved, Kirkland is another guy i like but im not sure about the transition inside to OG for him, i mean i think he would because his strengths match up with what a successful OG needs, you just never really know if that kinda move will be successful, hasnt been for us in past two tries. Turner should have been a hella good OG and so far hasnt really shown anything.

  30. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

D, I was gonna mention Tretola up above to Mike. He seems to have everything you want in a Guard. He’s what help make a living for Collins & Williams.

    • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

I also think Kirkland as a RG is appealing also.

      • D's avatar D says:

See above, i agree, i just am not sure about transitional players anymore is seems to be hit and miss with guys playing out of more natural positions for them.

      • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

Remember he was a RG until they needed a LT.

      • D's avatar D says:

Yeah and he he isnt really tall and he plays pretty low which is all why i said i think he could do it, again those transitional players just make me nervous. I might just be shell shocked because i never had issues with OT’s transitioning inside before. In my experience OG was much easier to play.

  31. D's avatar D says:

Mike i think Tretola is a start right off guy, Kirkland might would have to win it, im not more sure he would start than i am the guys we have currently, i think he would beat out Thomas, and pretty sure unless Turner makes a major step forward, he could beat out him as well.

  32. Ken's avatar Ken says:

First time I can remember a lower division player being no. 1 overall. That’s a lot to give up for a player from Division 1-A,

  33. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

    Bolt,
I like Drango, cause he could fill in @ OT when needed and he’s a midround type projection. But Phins may be looking at OG as a late pick since they have a lot of young competition there now.
This is why they had visits with guys like Rees Odhiambo from Boise St. I bet Ajayi spoke well of him & when they watched all the film study on Ajayi last year, Rees probably caught their eye.

    • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

I’m still not sure. I know early in the process I thought we might see an O player or 2 late in our draft with rounds 1-4 being Defense, but now I don’t know.

  34. Ken's avatar Ken says:

I am not a huge fan of Goff. I think he is limited athletically. He reminds me of Chad Pennington. Mediocre arm but very smart and highly accurate. Not sure he is no. 1 overall material but it is the QB position so it tends to get over drafted.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

That kind of trade up though, you best be drafting a stud QB, not Chad Pennington. You better be drafting Joe Montana.

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

My thoughts exactly. I wouldn’t have traded up for any of the QBs in this draft. Not a huge fan. I think Wenz has upside but I think he will have growing pains. It’s a big transition.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

Absolutely correct but they gave themselves the opportunity to do that. Of course they need to make the right investments with those picks. But they are in a nice position right now. Lots of picks. Good young QB and poor division.

True but Urbik’s starting trend over the last 3 years has been going south in a hurry.

He did start 9 games in 2014 but Buffalo had one of hte worst OL in the NFL then.
In Miami, at worst, he can serve as the swing OL (OT-OG). Given Miami’s bad OL play; Urbik, no matter how much he has declined, is welcomed until the Fins can draft/develop a better option.

I say this cause the Raidez may want Conklin too. Penn is getting old & they almost let him go. He got a 2yr $14M deal to stay. They got a young QB to protect.

He played very little and was released during the season. He hasn’t been signed by anyone so he might be done. He’s only 28 but I guess he’s just not that good.

He moves really well for a big man but has short arms (31.5) which always suggests he’ll move inside at the next level.

    Tim,
Here is where I stand with Urbik.
I don’t care about the $ because I’m not paying him lol.
His $ commitment isn’t breaking the cap or Fins strategy on personnel.
Can he play more than 1 position at OL? Yes.
Is he better at OT than Fox/Thomas? Absolutely.
Albert/James missed time last season due to injury and it’s imperative that a competent backup OT is on the roster.
Is he better inside at OG than Turner/Thomas? Who knows. Way more experience at least.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Yeah bringing in him, Bushrod and Young at least adds some experience and flexibility to the competition. I’m sure we’ll draft an OL at some point but not sure who or when.

When will teams learn? Makes that 2nd rounder we gave to get BA a real bargain. Pity the pick hasn’t worked out so far, right move, though.
Getting back to the OGs, I want to see Thomas get the boot, I don’t think he is up to it. I want to see us persevere with Douglas and Turner @ the OG spots. By all means draft a couple on the 3rd day. Names have been suggested. Conklin is still my main man but I would have him sitting behind BA learning. Bushrod and the rest are better depth as long as Thomas goes.

Had a number of evaluators tell me there’s not a big difference b/w the 20th pick and the 50th pick this year. Titans at 15, 33, 43 and 45.

  79. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

The cat’s out of the bag on my boy. I tried to keep him a secret for months.

The National Football Post’s Aaron Wilson reports that Maryland CB/S Sean Davis “has firmly captured the attention of NFL decision-makers” and has had private workouts or meetings/dinners with 19 teams.
Just as Eric Rowe flew up draft boards last year, Davis, his doppelganger, is following suit. In fact, Wilson reports that Davis is “projected as a second-round target for NFL teams.” Rowe was drafted by the Eagles with the 47th pick in the 2015 draft. Davis had a 99-percent similarity score with Rowe based on his Combine testing, a stunningly high correlation.

  80. D's avatar D says:

Ken there is probably more risk this year. I didnt see a ton of issues that he had with speed of the game at Senior Bowl week, his throws didnt seem to have zip on them was the biggest thing i saw. His passes lingered and in the NFL those would have been picked and probably taken to the house. However, i heard multiple scouts say he was not 100% that week and that could explain some of the zip on his throws. I gave him benefit of the doubt, went back looked at a bunch of film and his passes seemed fine, that was my biggest concern with him. I do see exactly what you are saying and tend to agree, but id probably feel it was a risk even if he was from a FBS school.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

Speed of the game is so hard to see on film because he is playing against lesser and presumably slower competition. Where it will show is when he shows up to camp and starts playing against other pros. I like Wentz but I think if he came out in last year’s draft he would have been a 2nd to 3rd round pick. Now he may be no. 1 overall.

Id be shocked and very disappointed if it happens, he was squeaky clean in college. Very high character guy.

    • D's avatar D says:

I also this may be smokescreen shit. I checked after combine to see if there was anyone who failed and i couldnt find anything, and why does this rumor happen now and not right after the fucking combine like it has every year.

      • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

        D,
These things eventually get out, but the league has done a better job keeping leaks quieter this year.

  82. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

All’s quiet since that rumor on a failed drug test for an SEC player ranked in top 20.

  83. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

The Dolphins have made 46 first-round selections through the years, starting with Jim Grabowski and Rick Norton in 1966 (AFL draft) through DeVante Parker last year.

Of those players, 15 went on to earn at least one Pro Bowl invitation and three — Bob Griese (1967), Larry Csonka (1968) and Dan Marino (1983) — ended up in the Hall of Fame.

Other Dolphins first-round picks who became Pro Bowl players were DE Bill Stanfill (drafted in 1969), DE/LB Kim Bokamper (1976), LB/DE A.J. Duhe (1977), G Roy Foster (1982), T Richmond Webb (1990), DE Marco Coleman (1992), CB Troy Vincent (1992), DT Tim Bowens (1994), RB Ronnie Brown (2005), T Jake Long (2008), CB Vontae Davis (2009) and C Mike Pouncey(2011).

If it was VHIII, I wonder if it affects his draft stock. It might not.

    • D's avatar D says:

Questions i have is if true, why wasnt it reported right after or during combine. Randy Gregory’s was right after, so was Shane Ray, the year the 3 LSU players failed it was right after. Im suspicious of this.

got my $1.49 fluke a/c detector with free shipping from China today(4 days after ordering) tested the sensitivity between the one I bought for 40.00 bucks 10 years ago and there is no difference. In fact, the chinese one has a light so one can see dark outlets. Made in US one is 30 bucks plus shipping….Amazing how strong the dollar is.

  89. D's avatar D says:

I musta missed the Oakman sexual assault arrest….damn.

  90. D's avatar D says:

Part of me would like to see us draft a guy like Pharaoh Cooper or Sterling Sheppard 2nd-3rd round as a complement to Parker and Landry. Stills as a 4th guy, rotational with Cooper/Sheppard, in on stretch the field packages. That would be a damn nice set of WR’s. I say part of me because the other part of me is saying its stupid for us to draft a WR that high when we can get some bargain value guy like Peake, Robinson, or Mike Thomas, or even take a shot on someone like Duke Williams in UDFA.

  91. D's avatar D says:

Would you consider trading up to 5 to take Tunsil if he falls that far? Raven will not pass on him so you would have to go to 5 to get him.

Another question, if Tunsil falls to 6, who is the next team you think would go for Stanley and would you trade up before them to get him?

    • D's avatar D says:

I think for sure Stanley would be highly possible 9’ers at 7 and probably guaranteed to go to the Giants at 10. So im thinking we would have to trade up to 9 with the Bucs at very least. I think that means id either be all in for Tunsil trading up to 5 or id just stay put and let Stanley go to someone else.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

As much as I would love Tunsil or Stanley I don’t think we are in a good position to trade up. We made our bed by trading down this year and we have too many holes we need to fill so giving up picks to pick up 1 guy probably doesn’t make a lot of sense when we have holes at CB, LB, RB and OL.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

We have some more immediate needs for all those people that left after last year.

      • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

Yes we do, but that doesnt mean WR isn’t a need also. I’m not saying to take one in the first 3, but after that if you have a Garrett sitting there….I take him in an instant.

  97. dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

    D,
I’m not sure where Garrett’s stock is. So many, prior to the combine, had him 6-UDFA. After the combine I’ve seen most projections between 3rd and 5th with a few in RD2.

    • D's avatar D says:

My gut with his size/speed/athletic traits is he is a draft riser and winds up landing somewhere 2-3, at very latest 4th round.
