The Wedge Scouting Report: Deion Jones, LB

a boo boo booo boo bah

a weee weee weee wah

Oh hey there…just ignore the baby talk its not for you…Its for this little cutie

WedewithB abyAlien

Adorable isn’t he!

These little Corozar Bay Moon Babies are the cuties things in the universe

a boo boo boo bah…(Wedge shakes a rattle)

Mine?  No no.  I picked this little guy up and about 3000 more as my latest weapon.

You see, the idea is you land on an unsuspecting planet you want to destroy and you give them the “please take my baby” bit.  Who can resist?  Look how adorable he is with his big sad eyes.  Then you fly off and leave the baby behind.

Then after dark…

BabySpaceAlien in Space

Its a whole different baby

On average A Corozar Bay Moon Baby can eat about 60 square miles, inhabited or not, in a 48 hour period.  Pretty impressive!  These little guys have a rabid appetite.

So you have to make a few landings on the planet of you want it devoured within a week.

These babies and there appetite remind me of the attacking linebacker I want the Dolphins to draft.

DionJones6

Deion Jones is one of those linebackers.

The LSU Linebacker was a force for the Tigers in 2015.

Its easy to miss talent like Jones on a talented team like LSU.

LSU puts so much talent in the NFL you should not overlook anyone on their roster.

DionJones5

The 6’1 222 pund linebacker might seem small to some, but that did not stop him from racking up 100 tackles, 13.5 for a loss.

That was his only year starting for LSU.  Jones didn’t start until Kwon Alexander left for the NFL in 2015.  Hey Kown Alexander?  Didn’t I do a scouting report on him last year?

Yep!  And ironically many scouts compare Jones to Alexander.

NCAA Football: Louisiana State at Mississippi State

At the combine Jones caught the attention of the NFL by running a 4.59 40 yard dash.

He also had a 33 inch vertical jump and a 120 inch broad jump at the combine.

But it was his pro day that really set him apart and has him moving up[ the boards.

Deion Jones ran a blazing 4.38 40 yard dash at his pro day.  WOW!

He also upped his vertical jump by 2 1/2 inches and did 18 reps on the bench press.

DionJones2

I know some Dolfans are looking forward to drafting Jones on day 3 of the draft.

But the secret is out.

I’m expecting Deion Jones to be drafted by the time round 3 is over.

So if the Dolphins want this attacking linebacker – they will have to make that move early.

DionJones4

Just like the people who adopt this adorable baby should get the fuck off their planet before it gets dark!

If Deion Jones was an alien weapon of destruction…

he would be the deadly Corozar Bay Moon Baby!

Lookout NFL!

SON-OF-A-SON; Your post up the page was nothing short of epic!! VERY, very few of today’s youth can comprehend the sacrifices and the dedication of prior generations. WHAT does this say about our educational system?
    *
    *
It says nothing about our educators, but rather about the policies of the institution and a meddling government. Educators hands are tied by state and national tests that control what curriculum is allowed to be taught. Also no child is allowed to fail or is held accountable for their actions or lack of action. A kid fails a class it’s not their fault it’s the teachers fault because they’re sexist, racist, anti gay, etc. it’s never because the kids lazy & the parents don’t follow up at home. We are in an ultimate excuse making society where no one can be held accountable for their actions.

    Also nice article Piggy.

  3. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Good job Piggy! I’ll tell you this, I’d be much more comfortable taking Deion Jones in the 3rd RD than taking Darron Lee in the 1st RD. If we take Lee at #13, I will throw something really hard.

    • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

Lee is the one prospect I don’t like at all😂 He’ll probably prove my hesitation about him wrong…..I’m just not comfortable drafting a LB who doesn’t get off blocks.

I once turned a double play because runners were sleeping. There was a pop up to shallow center field with base runners on 1st and second so all I had to do is throw to third and then 3rd baseman threw to second. I got my ass chewed out by coach when I got to dugout.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Tough play for the base runner right there. If he goes half way, he could get thrown out at first base if he catches it. If he stays at first, he’ll get thrown out at 2nd base with a smart play like that.

  5. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

    Good stuff, Piggy.

Was Jones injured at the combine? Because that’s a big difference in 40 times 4.59 then a 4.38.

After RD 3 targets for me.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Do you mean after the 3rd rd is when you’d target a RB?

      • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

I think he’s saying there’s good value after the 3rd. Now here’s something I don’t think many people are projecting….I think we are going to see a big run on HB’s between rounds 2-4 where we see guys who you thought would be on the board in rd5 off the board by RD 3.

  11. dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

    Tim,
In regards to Jones time difference….could be as simple as a start or maybe at the combine he went through drills prior to the 40.

    • D's avatar D says:

IMO both numbers are wrong, he’s probably like a 4.4ish guy i think one was a little generous and the other seemed pretty slow. The guy flies around, and i know football quickness really makes some people seems faster, but you want to see his 40 speed just watch him on ST’s he is the first to get down there consistently, he’s fast.

      • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

I’d agree he’s a 4.4 guy, but was bringing up legit reasons where a discrepancy in time could occur opposed to the hand time vs computer timer.

  12. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

I am learning what “East Coast bias” in NBA is all about. It’s because West coast games start at 10:30 pm!! I’m in Hanover, New Hampshire and tried to watch Clippers/Blazers. Fell asleep during 2nd quarter!!! I’m gonna drink red bull before the Dubs play tonight. lol

  13. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Dbolt, I can see that kind of a run on RBs. Then again, there is always that 2-3 rd run on CBs. I think because of the depth on the DL through 3-4 rounds, they always go first. So because this draft has more depth than elite talent, you may see some good talent fall to the 5th round at multiple positions that normally isn’t there.

Block Party occurred this weekend in Bloomsburg….proud of these kids!

    @Sheimm: Blooms block party 😭😂😭 https://t.co/wR1OpMaJxu

  15. D's avatar D says:

Al we seem to have a couple RB’s in common. I have been really big on Perkins and Washington. Washington came in really late at senior bowl as a sub in, didnt have much of the week to learn the offense and was still one of the more impressive backs there. He picks up things fast and is elusive as this ranking thing shows. He was pretty impressive.

    • Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

Yep. Washington I didn’t think of much until someone around here mentioned him (might have been you talking about him from SR BOWL week). He looks very shifty while going upfield against DB/LB. Those are musts in the NFL to be good at WR/RB.

  16. D's avatar D says:

I think there will be a pretty significant run on RB’s day 2, but at the same time i dont expect the talent level to drop off much at the beginning of day 3 than there was day 2.

    • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

I’m just expecting the names we keep seeing being mentioned as being there in rds 4-5 are going to be gone. I think correspondingly that LB group might be the ones who have names mentioned in rds2-3 are the ones who slide.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I don’t think it’s a great LB class based on stuff I’ve read. Most of the prospects have some kind of hurdle they must overcome.

      • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

There’s still good players at the position that I’m thinking will drop. Plenty of good WOLBs in this draft that I could see dropping.

      • D's avatar D says:

I think Drake is going to probably go late 3, maybe Perkins as well. I think guys like Washington, and Green for example are probably still day 3, 5this rounders because they are smaller backs. I think Williams is likely a 4-5th rounder too because foot injuries that keep you out over a year, and into the combine/workout process make most people very scared. Foot injuries that liner like that are worse medical evaluations sometimes than the shit that scared everyone away from Ajayi. the others we talk about, Lasco, Ervin, Taylor, etc those guys are going to be 4-6th rounds.

  18. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Al might be on to something with Perkins

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Not to take away Al’s kudos but Perkins has been discussed here. He’s a good fit for what will likely be our new spread offense. We know Gase is going to use 3 WR sets often. Perkins fits that scheme as does Ajayi who played in a similar system.

  19. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

A lot of you like this guy
    Good receivIng back

  20. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Dbolt, some of the LBs in this draft will pan out an be nice players but it’s not a class that really jumps out at you.

    • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

I think it’s a solid class where you’ll find starting caliber talent in every round….maybe not pro bowl talent laden, but effective scheme driven talent.

I could see us drafting a RB on day 3 and signing a couple of UDFAs. Maybe we even draft two – one mid rounds and one late. I could see adding a quick slasher type who can catch the ball and a grinder who can pick up tough yards. Ajayi will likely be our main back.

    ————————————-
I think there are some being severely undersold. Its not stud laden, but there is a good bit of talent and a lot of guys with great instincts for the position. Lots of good read react guys and sure tacklers. I guess its a more lunch-pail kinda group, i think though overall i like this group better than last year’s and that group turned out pretty good.

    • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

I think we’ll see big name guys like Lee, Cravens, etc. take a shit while you’ll see some of the guys listed behind them severely out perform them from day 1.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Lee is more of an upside guy who needs refinement but that guy is really friggin quick and a very good overall athlete. He should probably be a 2nd rd pick.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

That’s why I said it’s not a great class. Solid with some depth is probably the best way to describe them.

  31. D's avatar D says:

Close i get to draft is where i get pretty locked in on best fit kind of guys and i think Kenyan Drake is about the best RB for us. I really like Dixon but i think Dixon is going to go too high. I think Drake might be there in the 3rd or maybe even 4th rounds for us, so to me thats best value for what i think we could get out of the selection. Drake is going to be able to handle punt returns and probably at least share kickoff returns. To go along with his home-run ability out of the backfield, receiving skills and size to grind out yards i think he offers us the most flexibility to disguise our plays well, create match-up mismatches, and kep LB’s S’s honest for fear of him getting out of check.

    • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

People seem to love CJ Prosises fit also. Raw, but elite tools to work with. I also think a healthy Jonathan Williams is a custom fit.

If the Dolphins draft Elliot in RD 1, It will confirm to me that this franchise doesn’t know how to win.

  34. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Last year when we drafted Ajayi early in the 5th round
He was the 13th back taken

So that give you an idea of the timing we are talking about

If there are 8-10 guys that can be good for us
We probably need to take a RB before the 4th round
But I don’t think we need one before round 2 is done

  35. D's avatar D says:

DBolt, Williams would be a really good addition, im just not using anything but a lower round pick for him. That foot injury bothers me, he should have already healed from it, so it seems to really be a nagging injury he may never get right from.

    • D's avatar D says:

Healthy, Williams would be steal of the draft if taken 4-5th round. He has all the tools to be a beast of a RB, im just not convinced that injury isnt career threatening. Foot injuries are either minor or they are major and a full year and still not better…..i just dunno, he needs a really close medical look-over.

  36. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

D, Drake would give us an explosive weapon on offense who could also line up as a WR. If Ajayi is our feature back, he would be a good complement. Then like I said earlier, having a true grinder back who can pick up tough yards would be good option. That back could be picked up after cuts are made with a proven guy who knows his role.

    ————————————–
    I agree with this 100%

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

If we did that he better be a 25+ touch back and I don’t think our offense is committed to one guy like that. I’d be very surprised if we drafted Elliot and I do not think he’ll be there anyway. Then again if he goes before us, do those team not know how to win?

  38. D's avatar D says:

My think in the first round is we have tons of ways we could go with the pick, i wouldnt be upset with many of them, but im REALLY hoping we have a year like last year where a player we really like slips to us, and i hope this year its Hargreaves.

  39. D's avatar D says:

Maybe that Drake would be good too Piggy. Run him out on the field, let him break into “hotline bling” all the defensive players become mesmerized by the weird little dance he is doing and meanwhile our player is running unimpeded to the endzone.

  40. D's avatar D says:

Kieth Marshall is a guy i also think could wind up going significantly higher than any of the mock draft sites currently position him.

  41. D's avatar D says:

I dont even understand why they are going to bother even having kickoffs anymore. Its wasted energy, except for on-sides kick which everyone knows if coming 99% of the time. If you are going to move kickoffs up 5 years and you already had the highest ever percentage of touch-backs in the history of the NFL, moving it up 5 yards just almost ensure more of the same. Why not just cut out kickoffs all together and just give team the option of starting on the 20 or in place of onside kicks just give them 4th and 10 on the 40, you pick it up its like recovering an on-sides kick, you miss it, its like failing an on-sides kick. This was suggested a couple years ago and quite honestly i really like the idea.

    • D's avatar D says:

It seems the point is for them to make it so that no kickoffs happen, then easiest way is to just not do them

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I’m not sure I like the 4th and 10 thing, that’s too much fucking around with the game but I wouldn’t be surprised if that sort of thing happens down the road.

    Les Bowen ‏@LesBowen · 5m5 minutes ago
NFL source calls Myles Jack “a time bomb” whose knee could give him several good years, or not. Bone and cartilage starting to break away.

  43. D's avatar D says:

Tim, the 4th and 10 thing for me just equivocates out to a on-side kick about as closely as anything out side of actually doing the kick.

Way i think of it is, if you did an onside kick it would be a low percentage chance for it to work and if it doesn’t work you the opposing team would get it approximately 10 yards from the kickoff spot, so 45. If you did get it you would be approximately on the 45 as well. An equally as difficult thing is to pick up a first on 4th and 10, low percentage chance and with any play you could either get none, all or part of the 10 yards it took to pick up the first. Therefore if you say 5 yards might be the average on that play, then that comes out to be 45, so failing t pick it up puts the other team about where they normally would be picking it up. Any fumble recovery/advancement or interception would equal out to the ball getting away from the kicker with chance to return.

Maybe it does change the game a little, but they are already changing it to rid themselves of the kickoff so why pussy foot around it, just get to that shit and change it but leave us with something interesting in its place. This bullshit of making it so we go through the motions of a kickoff with little chance of excitement just seems to dull the game down some. At least the 4th and 10 pick up play would hold some similar level of excitement.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Yeah but you’re automatically giving a team the ball. That’s what I don’t like.

      • D's avatar D says:

Dont you automatically give them the ball before they kickoff?

      • D's avatar D says:

one time shot to get the ball on the on-side kick, one shot to keep the ball on 4th and 10, its pretty much same deal.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I thought you meant the team trying the onside kick just gets the ball on their own 40 4th and 10? They didn’t earn the possession.

  44. D's avatar D says:

    Your Picks:
Round 1 Pick 13: Vernon Hargreaves III, CB, Florida (A)
    Round 2 Pick 11: Kevin Dodd, DE/OLB, Clemson (A)
Round 3 Pick 10: Sebastian Tretola, OG, Arkansas (B+)

Round 7 Pick 10: Antwione Williams, OLB, Georgia Southern (C+)

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I think Hargreaves and Dodd would be a great draft

I don’t know much about Tretola

but those rounds 3-5 are really big rounds that can give us the big boom in the draft
If we went DE/CB in the first 2 rounds

I think you have the right idea by going OG, RB and S
but of course LB comes into play as well

There’s a bunch of guys I will have my eye on to see if they are there
(S: Neal, Cash, Davis, Karl; LB: Jenkins, D. Jones, Matakevich, Morrison, Scooby, Perry; RB: Those guys I listed earlier today; OL: Garnett, Ifedii, Westerman, Alexander & Clark)

There aren’t as many prospects available in later rounds at DE and CB
so taking them first probably nets you a chance at the best quality in rounds 3-5 too

    Randy,
I glanced over you manifestos on the previous page….and in regards to O, I agree learning a new can keep the team similar to last year production wise until they’re comfortable with scheme and communication. Where they could make a difference is competence & commitment to the run game which will allow them to control the clock and wear down defenses.

    • the key word is competence. it’s easier said than done. need to get the blocking down and it’s not something that is going to happen day one. if it did, it would be nothing short of a miracle, but getting the run blocking down isn’t as easy as people think it is. Then, you’ve got to get the pass blocking down as well and everyone’s got to be on the same page. one small breakdown and the play is dead.
IF they get it right with the run blocking I’m not expecting it to happen until at least wk 4 of the season.

Not saying this is proof he is ok, and he may spend 8 hours recovering from just that activity, but he looks pretty healthy knee wise in that video.

I think the medical risk being discussed is the longer term impact. The report that someone ran off with is “his knee can give out at any moment”. Sounds pretty much like BS to me but if there are issues like the one Ajayi has; then in 5 years he may be out of the league. That is the concern.

    secondary depth chart could be

CB: Rookie (Hargreaves, Alexander, Jackson?), Maxwell, McCain1, Lippett, McCain2, Ifooooooooooooooo
S: Reshad, Quddus, Rookie (Neal, Cash, Davis?)

that can potentially be a good secondary

The thing about Abdul-Quddus is he took advantage of a situation at safety and made the best of it. Although he’s been a backup and STs player his first 4 seasons he finished as a starter the last 11 games of his 5th season in DET and that’s what opened scouts eyes. He has the prototype size, speed and athleticism. Maybe we landed a player ready to take the next step.

Agreed and now Jack is also a question for teams with his knee. New reports suggest he might have something similar to Ajayi with a knee issue that’s a matter of time.

Do you take him 1st round if that’s the case?

Anytime you can work in that CB/DE combo in the first two rounds
It’s gonna be a good draft

Hargreaves and Ogbah are both good players

But why draft Cyrus jones in round 4?
Do we need to draft a 2nd CB in round 4?
How about a LB there or a safesy or a RB so you don’t have to wait until the 5th and take what’s left

I think we might need more than 1 CB. We have Maxwell, and we have McCain as possibly our nickel corner. Jamar Taylor is a huge question mark, as is Ifoooooo, and we don’t know if Lippett can ever be a quality starter. Cyrus Jones is a good press corner, and he’s a very good return man too. He gives us another potential starter, as well as a punt returner.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

There are a lot of question marks at CB

But I didn’t even include Taylor and I think that is too much

I think of we add a CB early in the 1st or 2nd we are done at CB
Taylor is good enough to be a backup in he NFL
Lippett and Ifo might be question marks
But by then you are 5 guys deep into our depth chart

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

There are 4 and 5 WR sets where you have to go dime, or maybe even quarter defense. You have to have 4 CB’s to put on the field, and if you have a very weak link, be assured it will picked on.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Mike, I’m pretty sure in the dime there’s 3 safeties on the field.

I think we might need more than 1 CB.

mike, even though he wasnt much last yeah i think other then suh every position on defense might need help or at least no one should have a secure job. the d was horrible last year. and on offense other then one or two line men and two wr’s no one should be secure. that even includes tanny. i think no one but maybe half dozen guys should have a secure job next year.

hell even the coaching staff isnt not the front office. this team is all about prove yourself mode next year

  81. finfanrob's avatar finfanrob says:

I’d add another corner before a safety. We have Jones, IAQ, Thomas. Aikens and Gary. You may not like it but they’re further along than some of these rooks. A lot of the prospects have limitations in deep coverage. They look the part and can hit but they’re still green in coverage. The pro game is a significant step up from what any of these guys have played in college. It really is.

    Tim,
They could cut everyone on your list after IAQ, and I don’t think we’d have a problem replacing their talent. Not that we should…just sayin’.

kind of what i said. there is maybe a half dozen on the team that are good and any team would take. but that just shows how bad this team is. i know you dont think tanny is all that and i dont consider him one of any team would want. only teams that would want him are teams like the browns. some desperate team for a qb. but he isnt one i consider one with a secure job for the fins. there are two wr’s and a few on the oline and maybe two on the D. other then that no one wants anyone from this team.

  91. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Tim,
I thought all of our safeties but Jones took a step backwards last year. The team obviously thought so too because they signed IAQ. Young guys don’t always develop. We’ve been playing that game for a long time, and many haven’t. It’s been a big reason why this team hasn’t been able to take that next step.

  92. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I like the warning at the start of that video

I’m glad I consulted my doctor before I worked out today

Here is another one for you guys
    You might recognize the star

  93. Tim,
that’s why Eric Murray is being looked at as a safety at the next level by some teams even though he was a press man corner at Minnesota. He’s got the coverage ability and he tackles very well. It’s actually because of his tackling ability that teams like him as a FS.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

      A lost art, tackling! 😦

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

It’s a lost art in the NFL, because they don’t practice with full pads enough. In college most teams are playing like it’s Arena Football, so no tackling there either, that’s why big hitters, like the WV safety Pig had in the article yesterday are desirable.

      • especially on this team. one of the reasons I really don’t like Apple at CB. Thomas is another ole’ guy who moves out of the way when it comes time to make a tackle and Gary is a lot more aggressive than he is. I think Thomas’ days in Miami are numbered. We probably pick up another guy to throw into the competition. Who it is, Idk, but it’s better than just penciling guys in every yr. Tired of that

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I don’t like Apple for that same reason, but the scouting reports say he a big physical CB. Not sure what the hell they’re looking at, because to me he looks like Dion Sanders trying to tackle, and he surely doesn’t cover like Dion.

      • I call them “Prince” tacklers because I compare them to when Prince ran into the room to break up the fight between his mother and father in the movie Purple Rain.

  94. Randy's avatar Randy says:

Check this out. I just talked to a friend of mine whose son is a friend of Wentz. She said they are working out contract details right now, and he will be the number 1 pick if they can agree to terms. Had that been announced? Can the first team still negotiate ahead of the draft?

  95. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Lou,
I bet teams like how smart a football player Murray is too. He’s just a smart player who plays within himself and doesn’t make a lot of mistakes….exactly what you want in a FS.

    • He’s definitely a smart player and doesn’t make a lot of mistakes. He’s not flashy but he’s technically sound when it comes to playing the position. I think him having the experience at cb makes him all that much better at S; especially because of how well he played CB

  96. Randy's avatar Randy says:

The NFL doesn’t allow big hits anymore, so it’s really not a plus. Technically sound tackling is.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

You may get some penalties here and there, but the big hitters cause alligator arms, something we’ve lacked forever.

  97. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Tim,
I thought Aikens looked horrible most of the season. He’ll have to really up his game. I hope he can!
