A Look at the 2016 NFL Draft

2016 NFL Draft

So many possibilities exist, because despite all the prognostications, no one really knows how things are going to shake out on draft day, which incidentally, is only 1 week away!  7 days folks, and ALL the First-Pick and Fanspeak mock drafts will disappear, at least for a few months until we start them all over again.  We’re hardcore fans, we can’t help it!

What I’m going to do is give you all a look at how our draft appears to be shaping up and who seems to be popping up the most for us at #13 .  I could go further, as 7 RD mock drafts are more commonplace, especially this late in the game, but I think it gets silly to try and determine all 7 RD’s, so we’ll just look at the 1st RD.

With the 13th pick in the 2016 NFL Draft, the Miami Dolphins select . . .

I’ll start with NFL.com  . . .

_________________

According to all the mock drafts I have listed above, this is how it all stacks up.

It’s pretty obvious that most of the people who put in some time think we’re drafting a CB.  Although the vote is somewhat split among 3 players, Eli Apple, William Jackson III and Vernon Hargreaves III or Mackensie Alexander, the majority of selections were us taking a CB.  The winner, by just 1, and of course, there are literally thousands of mocks, which kind of made this exercise futile, but, I did it so, the winner is . . .

Ohio State CB  – Eli Apple 6’1″ 199

Wait!!!!  What’s this????  It’s a TIE????  Yes, it’s a tie!!!!   After tabulating all the selections, it seems as if we have a tie between Ohio St. CB Eli Apple and Ohio St. RB Ezekiel Elliott!

Ohio State RB  – Ezekiel Elliott 6’0″ 225

NCAA FOOTBALL: OCT 10 Maryland at Ohio State

Ohio State CB – Eli Apple

NCAA Football: National Championship-Ohio State vs Oregon

Ohio State RB – Ezekiel Elliott

LB Darron Lee, CB William Jackson III and DE Shaq Lawson get honorable mention falling just one shy with 4 selections.

I can’t believe the draft is just a week away people.  The draft is something I always look forward to, and yet somehow,  get disappointed how it turns out.  Let’s hope we get what we need, and give our new Head Coach Adam Gase the right tools to work with.  No question we’re short on CB’s, so there is little doubt we will be selecting one early, if not necessarily 1st.  I think we might take two CB’s, but we’ll see how it turns out.

Are we done tinkering with the O-line? Do we have our starting OG’s in house?  I don’t think so, so I expect at least one early pick on an OL, maybe an OG, or an OT who will be moving to OG.  We need a youth infusion at DE as well, so I won’t be shocked if we go DE early either.  I feel like we need a solid LB, but we did trade for Alonso, and Jenkins should round back into form, which leaves Misi.  We know what Misi can give us, but I want better.  We also have to hope Alonso can regain his rookie form, when he was a dominant player.  I’m leery counting on him, but it seems like the team isn’t.

We have 8 total picks at the moment . . .

#13, #42, #73, 107, #147, #186, #227 and #231.  Do we finish the draft with 8 picks, or less, or maybe more?  Tune in next Thursday, and find out.

The good news from ESPN Pats Reporter MIke Reiss:

“Since Bill Belichick took over as head coach of the Patriots in 2000, I can’t recall a year in which there has been less buzz/excitement in the region for the NFL draft. The circumstances that led to the Patriots losing their first-round draft pick is part of it (part of the Deflategate penalties), with some fans gathering on social media and stating they won’t watch the opening round as a form of protest.”

The bad news: “the Patriots still have four of the draft’s first 96 picks.”

Even after losing their first they still have two 2’s and two 3’s.

  2. New Age says:

    Wyomong,

I case you didn’t see my response. Prosise is way too raw. Here’s a guy who hasn’t learned to block, has some issues with ball security, runs a bit high, was injured late, and hasn’t really learned the position. He has natural talent but I think he’s a huge project. I dont want huge projects before round 6-7 and he’ll go way before

    • steveccnv says:

He’s playing RB, he’s not a QB, where it takes yrs to figure it out. An RB bites as a pup or usually doesn’t bite at all, because it’s instinctive, you usually don’t acquire them later. With that said he’s got what it takes to play RB in the NFL. A guy like Damien Williams doesn’t have it, and most likely never will. It’s what sets apart the JAGS from the stars.

  3. Mike E. says:

4 days away to see if our team is worth a shit this year. lol

    • stangerx says:

We won’t know no matter what. Only thing they could do to really PO me is a huge trade up. Won’t like if we picked anything other than DB, LB, DE or Ezekial at #13 but then would be hoping they know more than me.

    • New Age says:

I’ve been using my magic 8 ball and it doesn’t look good. After multiple attempts, the highest ones are; Reply hazy, try again, Better not tell you now, and My sources say no. Damn you magic 8 ball!

      • stangerx says:

Don’t worry……three years from now there will be a bunch of folks touting how right they were based on one answer the Magic eight-ball gave them while ignoring all the other multiple shakes they gave it this month.

  4. Yep, the Titans, the Browns and the Pats can really put a damper on things for the Phins in the 2nd and 3rd rds.

    • stangerx says:

Are they targeting similar? Long ago gave up that even when you screw up a teams plan it wasn’t on purpose other than the player they want, even when a division rival. Draft day every team is all self-focused. MIght be different if there wasn’t a clock involved.

  5. Mike E. says:

    Stanger

You don’t know for sure, but you know if you have hope, for the most part. We desperately need some impact players.

    • stangerx says:

Only thing for me that gives less hope is with holes unfilled. But then that aspect goes against impact and BPA. You really don’t even have a chance of knowing the future of these guys until after camp is done, and that is just the start.

    • I like the Dave Gettleman approach of building the front 7. With all the movement on the d-line during the offseason I don’t think they go DE in the first even if Lawson is there. I will be disappointed but I don’t think it’s happening. I also don’t see Ragland as the choice because I think they feel they have their MLB in Alonso. CB is always a possibility but they take a few yrs to develop and I think they’re looking at trying to make the biggest impact now. So, I’ve got to believe that one of these guys are in play at #13: Jack, Lee, Floyd.

  6. A team like Cleveland with 7 picks in the top 100 may choose to move back up into the 1st. If they have a shot at Buckner at #8 I could see a possibility of them moving back into the 1st to get Nkemdiche. With Buckner, Nkemdiche and Shelton on their d-line it’s a great start.

    • stangerx says:

And Cleveland is scary cause they should be going talent over need. A talent sucker if you will, but then we are talking the Browns too. Not like they have a proven track record on the logical.

  7. wyoming85 says:

    New Age
    Fair enough on that reasoning!
I was just looking at tape didn’t even think about him not being at the position long enough!

    Thanks for the heads up!

That probably makes were he’s at more impressive though! 😉

    • New Age says:

Like Lou said, if he’s 3rd or lower on the totem pole somewhere, he’s an awesome project. He has talent. I just think it may take more than 2 years to really see what you have. Like an NE 😦

  8. New Age says:

I don’t think these teams screw us nearly as much as the teams picking behind them. NE doesn’t have a first and doesn’t get a pick until #60 right now. Titans really hurt teams with 4 selections in the top 45 but we do pick our top 2 before they pick their third. Browns have 6 in the top 100 but two of them are #99 and #100. Titans and Browns need the most help and may even trade further down. The Browns especially have some empty cupboards.

  9. uwantwat says:

Some one is forgetting we traded up to take DFF @ 3. We took Vontae Davis @ 25 and then traded him. We needed WRs and OL in the last 2 drafts so we took them. The rest of those draft were D for the main.

  10. wyoming85 says:

    Your Picks:
Round 1 Pick 15 (TENN): Vernon Hargreaves III, CB, Florida (A)
Round 2 Pick 2 (TENN): Keanu Neal, FS/SS, Florida (A-)
    Round 2 Pick 14 (TENN): Germain Ifedi, OT/OG, Texas A&M (A)
Round 3 Pick 10: Charles Tapper, DE, Oklahoma (A)
Round 4 Pick 9: Jordan Howard, RB, Indiana (A+)
    Round 5 Pick 8: Joe Schobert, OLB/ILB, Wisconsin (B-)
Round 6 Pick 11: Kevin Peterson, CB, Oklahoma State (B+)
    Round 7 Pick 6: Mike Matthews, C, Texas A&M (B-)
Round 7 Pick 10: Geronimo Allison, WR, Illinois (A+)

    • steveccnv says:

The grades on these mocks are useless, because its based on how early or late a player is taken according to the sites board, and what their grading scale is..

    • The Flying Pig says:

I think it’s one of he better drafts I’ve seen
I like going CB then safety

And you still got decent OL and RB

Lb is kinda meh but you can’t have it all

My prefer nice is Cash over Neal if that is the choice though

  11. stangerx says:

    Quiz of the Day.

How many first round players did the Dolphins take in the five drafts btwn 1999 and 2004?

Genius bonus pints for naming who was selected.

I agree if Wyoming’s draft above works out to be ours Id be pretty happy with that one.

    • stangerx says:

Exact players aside, sure would like that extra pick in the 2nd. And a GM on the other side who gives that up for apparently moving down to #15.

Looks like the arrow is pointing up again on Noah Spence after folks spent two months trashing him. Was always a top prospect.

… At any rate, I do know teams outside the Top 10 have been scrambling to do more background on Myles Jack, bc he may now fall to them.

    Ryan@coachryan82
@AlbertBreer Would you take him in the first?

I don’t make those decisions. But some people who do have told me they’re fine with Jack’s knee. Matter of opinion.

  16. Mike E. says:

Myles Jack if/when healthy is a difference maker, a real impact player. I think we’d have a hard time skipping him if he were to fall to us. Of course, you don’t know what he gives you this season, but it looks like he’s going to play for sure.

I’m not totally sold on Hargreaves. He’s not the bigger type press corner that VJ & co. seems to be desiring, like they did with Maxwell.
I think we’re better off with Artie Burns in the 2nd if Jackson isn’t still there.

Ideally trade down a few spots, to say Titans @ #15 or Lions @ #16 to get Jackson or Burns.

Just watched Hargreaves again, against Ole Mill and Alabama. I’m trying to like him, but I just can’t. What I do see is Keanu Neal laying the wood.

Hargreaves doesn’t fight for the ball well, is an awful tackler, and plays too far off his man. He’ll get an int here or there, but he doesn’t do anything else well.
