A Look at the 2016 NFL Draft

2016 NFL Draft

So many possibilities exist, because despite all the prognostications, no one really knows how things are going to shake out on draft day, which incidentally, is only 1 week away!  7 days folks, and ALL the First-Pick and Fanspeak mock drafts will disappear, at least for a few months until we start them all over again.  We’re hardcore fans, we can’t help it!

What I’m going to do is give you all a look at how our draft appears to be shaping up and who seems to be popping up the most for us at #13 .  I could go further, as 7 RD mock drafts are more commonplace, especially this late in the game, but I think it gets silly to try and determine all 7 RD’s, so we’ll just look at the 1st RD.

With the 13th pick in the 2016 NFL Draft, the Miami Dolphins select . . .

I’ll start with NFL.com  . . .

_________________

According to all the mock drafts I have listed above, this is how it all stacks up.

It’s pretty obvious that most of the people who put in some time think we’re drafting a CB.  Although the vote is somewhat split among 3 players, Eli Apple, William Jackson III and Vernon Hargreaves III or Mackensie Alexander, the majority of selections were us taking a CB.  The winner, by just 1, and of course, there are literally thousands of mocks, which kind of made this exercise futile, but, I did it so, the winner is . . .

Ohio State CB  – Eli Apple 6’1″ 199

Wait!!!!  What’s this????  It’s a TIE????  Yes, it’s a tie!!!!   After tabulating all the selections, it seems as if we have a tie between Ohio St. CB Eli Apple and Ohio St. RB Ezekiel Elliott!

Ohio State RB  – Ezekiel Elliott 6’0″ 225

NCAA FOOTBALL: OCT 10 Maryland at Ohio State

Ohio State CB – Eli Apple

NCAA Football: National Championship-Ohio State vs Oregon

Ohio State RB – Ezekiel Elliott

LB Darron Lee, CB William Jackson III and DE Shaq Lawson get honorable mention falling just one shy with 4 selections.

I can’t believe the draft is just a week away people.  The draft is something I always look forward to, and yet somehow,  get disappointed how it turns out.  Let’s hope we get what we need, and give our new Head Coach Adam Gase the right tools to work with.  No question we’re short on CB’s, so there is little doubt we will be selecting one early, if not necessarily 1st.  I think we might take two CB’s, but we’ll see how it turns out.

Are we done tinkering with the O-line? Do we have our starting OG’s in house?  I don’t think so, so I expect at least one early pick on an OL, maybe an OG, or an OT who will be moving to OG.  We need a youth infusion at DE as well, so I won’t be shocked if we go DE early either.  I feel like we need a solid LB, but we did trade for Alonso, and Jenkins should round back into form, which leaves Misi.  We know what Misi can give us, but I want better.  We also have to hope Alonso can regain his rookie form, when he was a dominant player.  I’m leery counting on him, but it seems like the team isn’t.

We have 8 total picks at the moment . . .

#13, #42, #73, 107, #147, #186, #227 and #231.  Do we finish the draft with 8 picks, or less, or maybe more?  Tune in next Thursday, and find out.

You could also say his offensive line blew people off the line….. just sayin.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

He also has great vision, cutback ability, power, quickness and speed.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Some of the same qualities Miller has, but we just didn’t see enough of them from Miller.

      • I’ve never seen Elliot have a run in college like the one Miller had against the Giants on Monday Night. He doesn’t have that escapability like Miller does. He can run with power, has a good burst thru the hole and can run thru an arm tackle but he’s not going to make people miss like Miller did.

  13. Elliot is the “DeMarco Murray” of college football. When his line is on and they blow holes open for him that ANY back can run thru he’s great but, when they don’t, he’s getting the 3 yd runs just like everyone else. 12 rushes for 33 yds against Mich St last season because his o-line didn’t get it done. His big runs the week after against Michigan were due to his o-line and TE’s executing to perfection and not allowing him to be touched. But, go back and look at how many of his runs were for 3 yds in THAT game. Sorry, but I’ve seen too much of his runs go for little or no gain. The one thing he can’t do is create.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

That’s BS. Not much happens without blocking. Adrian Peterson gets bottled up too when there’s nowhere to go. The same thing was said about Emmitt Smith and he was an excellent back who gained a ton of yards because of his ability too. I knew when Emmitt was at Florida he’d be a big time back in the NFL. He looked the part and I think he became that. I think Elliot will be that too.

      • Well, I’m just hoping we don’t waste a #13 on him.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

It wouldn’t be a waste but I’d prefer a tandem with Ajayi and another guy.

      • He doesn’t have the ability to create anything. He’s a straight ahead runner who doesn’t have the ability to make that jump cut in the backfield to make a defender miss and make something out of nothing. He’s nothing special. If the blocking is good he can get you yards but, like I said, go back and look at the Michigan game because it’s typical of his games. He has plenty of runs for 3 yds and then rips one off because his o-line and TE’s perfectly execute the play and nobody touches him. That’s not special ability. There’s any number of backs who can run a football when there’s nobody on defense to contend with.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

And yet you haven’t seen too many 3yrds or less runs from Miller, SMH.

Lou, Miller has exceptionally quick feet. I’d agree Elliot isn’t on the same level there but Miller wasn’t the same back when he came out of college that he was last year. He got better and better. We sometimes forget these prospects are really young and not as good as they can be yet. Young players do hone their skills and improve.

We get so caught up in how much the team sucks all the time you forget some of the guys who if they become good to high level NFL players there’s no way we don’t improve. I really can’t wait to see Parker and Phillips this year. If they go, as I and many hope, they might become one of the better 1-2 picks in team history. Thank you Dennis Hickey.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Add James and Landry to that list.

I think Phillips could become a beast. He flashed power, good agility and he gets his long arms up to deflect passes.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Yes, applaud Hickey, but also applaud Tannenbaum for getting rid of him amid the FO issues. We needed a clean slate starting off with Gase. I like what I’ve heard of Chris Grier so far, he seems like a no nonsense type of guy, someone that has a higher agenda, than himself.

  21. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I see the Redskins signed Norman 5 yrs $75M with $50M guaranteed.

  23. son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

I wasn’t lamenting Hickey not being here, I get it, but more just recognizing and giving him credit for 2 very solid drafts.

Right along with James and Landry that’s much higher quality in the early rounds than Ireland pulled off. Cause even when Ireland goes QB with Tannehill he follows it up with freakin’ cry baby Martin. Pouncey followed by D Thomas…

  24. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Hickey didn’t fail or anything, he was handed a shit situation and he added some good players. It was a philosophy thing with Tannenbaum on board. Grier was more inline with his thinking.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

They talked about our draft being B- last yr, I think that will go higher as the yrs go by. I expect Lippett to be the steal of the draft, Ajayi good solid RB at worst, McCain same thing at the slot, and I haven’t lost hope yet for Douglas. Parker and Phillips the sky is the lilmit.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

And that doesn’t even account for the PK/P and the LBs brought in. Anyone that complains about what Hickey did last yr is just that.

  26. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I’m watching the presser with Tannenbaum and Grier and the reporters questions are really weak. They keep harping on corner like they know WTF they’re talking about. They’re also disrespectful towards players as if they’re all awesome at what they do and but not specific players. Journalism has become a sheep like mentality, like they all decide what reality is in a meeting and then got from there. It’s pretty pathetic.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

It’s typical of Perkins Omar Walker, they’re all hacks, and the team knows it, but what can they do? Last yr I loved the way Philbin talked to those guys, always talking down to them, and they didn’t have a clue.

    #14. !!!!!!!

  33. New Age's avatar New Age says:

Im not saying we need a RB early but anyone saying Miller was a better RB out of college is crazy. I think it’s more they just didn’t watch the guy dominate. First Zeke played longer. Second, Zeke caught more passes per year and has bigger and better hands. Miller was just a touch faster at the combine but 12 lbs lighter. Just a touch better vertical at combine. Miller was a MUCH worse blocker.Zeke is a complete back out of college which is rare and a big reason he’s a 1st rounder.
    *
Zeke had a bad game against a Mich St team that wasn’t going to allow him to gash them again for 154 yards like the year before. Or like he gashed Wisconsin for 220, Bama for 230, or Oregon for 246. These teams knew what he could do. It was an OL that had 4 new starters on that champ squad. He still produced against top talent. He still smashed a good Michigan defense for 214. A top notch Notre Dame one for 149. Sure, a lot of this was the OL. Like every single RB since Barry Sanders needed their OL to make holes.
    *
Zeke is top notch. We may not get him before 13 but he’s definitely worth #13.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Nobody said, Miller was a better RB in college.

Miller is faster, but does nothing else better. Zeke is a far superior blocker and pass catcher, and is a better inside runner. I don’t know what Lou is watching, but I saw Zeke on just about every run that wasn’t blocked well at least juke one guy, mostly getting back to the LOS when he should’ve been tackled for a loss.

      • New Age's avatar New Age says:

Yeah, he really has that vision you want out of your RB. I’d really love to get him with Gase at the helm.

  34. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

    BPA

    • New Age's avatar New Age says:

If he’s there at #13, I’d have to say he is. I like Hargreaves but he’s small and has issues every CB has. I really like Lawson…but Zeke is better. I wouldn’t mind Lawson at #13 at all though. Zeke is just a top 6 talent in this draft.

  35. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Zeke benefits a lot from having JT Barrett as a running QB, ala Alfred Morris his rookie yr with RGIII.

  36. Randy's avatar Randy says:

I do not want a RB at 13. That would suck. Zeke is a good back, but he’s not special at the next level. You can find a back or two like him in most drafts. We got holes to fill.

    • New Age's avatar New Age says:

Every hole we have you can find two to three players that can do the same thing later. It’s really where a person puts their value. Only positions that you really need to go really early are pass rusher, and QB.

  37. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    New Age,
I agree. That’s why I’d rather go edge rusher or even CB. Ultimately, I just hope they get good players. But, I think we actually have holes at CB, S…..some would even say LB and OL. I think you can be competitive with a decent RB. You don’t need a top end guy….especially if you’re gonna run a 2 RB system. I just think there’s better value, for this team this year in other areas. I’m not gonna run a plane and fly a banner or anything if they draft the kid. Lol

    • New Age's avatar New Age says:

Lol, I know you are aren’t rabid. We do have holes at CB but after seeing a 5th rounder get $75 mill from Wash. and seeing Seattle and other teams get great returns from CBs in late rounds…I just don’t see the value this year. I think Hargreaves is the best pure CB in the lot and I’m not 100% sold at 13 but he’s solid. I like Conklin fine at 13. I really like Lawson at 13. I just think Zeke has a bit more talent than them. I won’t fly a banner either lol.

  38. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Randy, you know Elliot isn’t special at the next level or that’s just you’re opinion? Because to most people he’s better than that. LOL

  39. well Steve, if you saw Elliot do what you said you saw him do then you must’ve been smoking something when you saw it because it never happened. I just watched six games of Elliot’s plays and I can tell you right now that he didn’t do it in any of the games I just watched. He’s nothing special. We can do just as well with Booker or Dixon. I’m sorry but Zeke doesn’t have this ability to make people miss and this burst:

  40. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Tim,
My opinion, of course. Isn’t that the case for everyone here? All I can go on is what he showed in college. I don’t think he stood out as a special back in college. I don’t think special players get drafted at #13…even RBs…especially in a draft devoid of them. Like I said, if they think he represents the best value at that spot…so be it. Draft the kid. He’s a good player. I would just go another way.

  41. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    New Age,
Yeah, this draft is wide open. I’d prefer not taking a RB at #13, but I’m not getting too tied into anything. Just get good players.

  44. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

DT3 or Pead can be 2nd back, Bush rod Douglas at OG, Lippett and McCain at #2 CB and Nickel. We can get by with what we have, it’s not worth taking a need over BPA.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

I am not worried about BPA vs need. We have so many needs that BPA has to fit one of them.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I don’t think we have so many needs. We just need a few players to play better than what we had and some of our top guys to play up to expectations. We also have a lot of young players who could really break out for us and that would change everything.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Thinking 2nd yr players might break out is ok, but these other guys like Dallas Thomas, Billy Turner, Jamar Taylor, and Chris McCain fagetaboutit.

  45. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Well we’re less than a week away from discussing how bad our draft was. 😉

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I know you’re just joking, but it happens every yr. I expect this yr if you’re looking for that marquee player, then you’re going to be disappointed, unless someone falls to #13, otherwise I see a trade down.

All the beat writers keep saying Fins mum on the draft, but that’s not true what they said is we’ll see how the board plays out, if someone falls to us we’ll take him (those guys IMO are Elliott, Jack, Buckner, Stanley, Bosa), if not they want to trade down, if a deal comes available.

  46. Ken's avatar Ken says:

About the only positions I would be upset that we draft in round 1 is WR,QB, TE (not that we don’t need one – just no great ones in this draft) and after yesterday – K. Leaves us with a lot of possibilities.

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

You are correct but I also do not think we need a Long Snapper in Rnd 1.
      Nor a Punter.
Seriously I do not think we need another first round OT … we can make do with those we have for one more yr. The difference that would make this year does not matter enough.

IMHO We need a RB more than any other position. Elliott in the 1st would be the best pick for us this year. I believe he is a “Franchise RB” such as Beastmode or AP were.

If not him, then CB Jackson in the first and then we need to double down on RB in case one is a bust, so Prosise AND Marshall or Collins AND Drake or Howard AND Perkins.

When we won the Super Bowl, we had 3 quality backs. That would mean we still have two studs to use in a game even when one is nicked up and it means we always have fresh legs in the 4th qtr and in January. That is how you get to the playoffs and win there. Overload the skills positions, just as we have done at WR. (I really like the former Indy kid as a 4th string WR by the way.)

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Naples, how ’bout you write something from the current century 😉 This might not be news to you, but I’m not sure, so…you don’t need 3 quality backs in 2016. There’s plenty of backs we can take after the 3rd rd that can split carries with Ajayi, no reason to take 2. We have DT3 and Pead for insurance, either will be fine.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

        “Nor a Punter.”

Get why you say, but as sold on that one as you. 🙂

  47. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

    Snyder has done it again.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I think Norman has his head on a little better than Rexie’s eating partner Al. It’s a good move by the ‘Skins. We need more depth than expensive top end talent.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

But $50 mil guaranteed? And dude hasn’t been making much money before. Maybe he has the fire for that or maybe he doesn’t. We just don’t know. Not sure he does.

Would be different if he was say Andrew Luck and already had the big pay day. Panthers gave up on him even if they could have kept him this year for cheaper.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Panthers gave up on him, because they didn’t want the distraction he was causing being tagged, and knowing they weren’t going to sign him long term for what he wanted.

He’s too competitive to Haynesworth it, OBJ will see to that.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Panthers could have had him for less next year than what the Skins are willing to pay. And he would have been playing for the rest of his life come next off season. Not sure even how much Norman knows what all that money will do for his work effort or how fast he is four years from now.

  48. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Steve that desert sun is makin your brain mush.
If you want a RB by committee, you need a committee, not two 5th rounders for starters, a UDFA sub, and two injured / practice squad guys. We need to mow people down with waves of talent.

besides, the new way to beat these relentless pass rush teams like Denver’s is to swarm back at them with multiple sets, fresh legs, and pass catching RBs. You need a new playbook man!

  49. dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

If anyone told me that Corey Taylor, lead singer of Slipnot & Stone Sour, would deliver the most epic tribute to Prince I would’ve said no way in hell…I was wrong!

  50. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Thing is, all this devaluing of the RB position is a good way to end up 7-9 or 8-8 again. I think it is a failed experiment. Why take away a force the D must contend with? Those pass rushers HATE working hard and looking in the rear view mirror at a RB sprinting away from them. They will get disheartened and just plain tried and figure what the hell is the use if we rush hard and the QB hits a RB who gets 12?

Or they pin their ears back and a RB slashes right past them up the gut, like what happened to our DL last yr. Why not put elite pressure on the D from as many different positions as possible?

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

The devaluing of the RB position doesn’t mean you stop running the ball, it just means it’s not as important to have a top flight RB, because you use a committee, and don’t run the ball as much as they did in the ’70s, and the guys you can get in the 5th + rounds are pretty close to what you get from a guy in the earlier rounds, with the exception of a guy like Zeke.

I say draft two young stud RBs from the list i gave above and cut all those we have except Ajayi and start fresh with something that challenges every D we meet. Let’s run over some teams.

Better than yet another project at DB or yet another ST type of LB which is all else there is in rounds 3-4-5. We have those. Let’s gamble to win, not play it safe and watch Rexie grin at us again.

TIM SAYS “We’re less than a week away from discussing how bad our draft was.”–
MUCH TRUTH IS SAID IN JEST!!
    ———————————————–
IN Today’s TAMPA BAY TIMES sports section, columnist Thomas Bassinger, who writes about the Bucs for this paper, tracks the draft choices and the success levels of every team in the NFL over the last several seasons. He even attempts a scientific approach to rate each pick by each team. Then he adds up the “HIGH VALUE SELECTIONS” over the last 3 seasons based on his formula. –The results? –The franchise with THE MOST HIGH VALUE SELECTIONS over the last 3 seasons is (drum roll) –the New England Patriots, with 13 of them. Conversely, the Titans, the Bucs, the Browns and the MIAMI DOLPHINS ARE TIED FOR LAST PLACE with just 5 high value selections. Why is this so?? Bassinger suggests frequent poor selections for head coaches plays a role. “The Bucs are on their fifth head coach since 2003, the Dolphins are on their sixth and the Browns are on their seventh (NOT counting interim coaches).” Bassinger quotes analyst Bill Polian (recently elected to the Hall of Fame) as connecting draft failures to frequent changes in coaches and GMs. And, of course, these changes were necessitated by picking poor coaches and GM’s in THE FIRST PLACE!!!
    ——————————————-
Anyway, any of you who can dial up the Tampa Bay Times on line should take a close look at Bassinger’s analysis. I don’t agree with everything in his article. But he certainly offers “food for thought.” And he seems to say that franchises who have made poor decisions over the last 3 seasons are likely TO MAKE MORE POOR DECISIONS in the coming drafts. Hard to argue with that tendency.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

We all know about the frequent changing of coaches and GM as one of the main reasons the Fins selections have been so poor. What he doesn’t seem to mention is the fact that a successful program, like the cheats, has everyone (FO and coaches) on the same page and the schemes the coaches use work. That’s why some of us on this board are excited about the future (we believe Gase can work well with the FO and has schemes that work).

You change coaching staffs and they bring in their guys, that gives less of a chance to have guys drafted from the last regime succeed. When the FO has chaos and the HC doesn’t have a clue on how to use players to the best of their ability, or to what players to ask for that fit his system, then you get what we had last yr.

I didn’t need to do scientific research to figure it out 😉 These types of guys use words like scientific research, to make them look better, and to make people think they didn’t just pull this opinion out of their ass.

Steve; What you say is true about SOME WRITERS, including one who writes for the SS. However, if you look at Bassinger’s longish analysis, I think you’ll agree that he didn’t simply pull this one “out of his ass.” NOW, as for your confidence in Gase, I believe THAT is pulled out YOUR ASS without any meaningful proof or documentation of any kind. Otherwise known as “wishful thinking.” –Hopefully, YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY RIGHT in your conclusions. I am very tired of all the non-winning seasons produced by “THE DOOFUS BRIGADE!”

My confidence in Gase comes from what his former players and coaches that coached with him have said about him and what he’s done as an OC, and that’s been well documented. I’m sure you could google, (you do know how to use google don’t you?) his name and find plenty to back that up, as for head coach, he hasn’t done that yet, so there’s no proof, but if you’d like I could dig a little deeper in my ass and pull something up. I found something in there that I’m sure you’d like.

Steve I see what you mean but what about passing to RBs as well?
If we want to have 70 snaps a game, then a 60/40 split is 28 rushes.
That means 32 passes. I think that is too many throws, even if about 8 are designed for RBs.
I think there are enough carries for two backs to split 30 carries and 8-10 passes.
One guy could start and get most of the work in the first half
and the other guy could come in fresh in the second.

  82. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

CBS Sports draft analyst Dane Brugler noted that “several [sources] around the league” believe that UCLA LB Myles Jack could fall out of the top-10.
Jack’s medical recheck on his surgically repaired right knee has stirred up a bit of uncertainty, with Brugler reporting earlier that two top-10 teams scrubbed the UCLA standout from their boards due to medical concerns. Jack, himself, has said that his knee is not an issue. While he might not be a certain top-10 pick, the Jaguars have shown consistent interest throughout the process and they could end the suspense early by simply drafting the 6-foot-1, 245-pounder at No. 5.

    • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

His development is very fast. He’s only started as a RB last year.

    • If Prosise were a pick you took because you had two rb’s in the stable already and saw the potential there that’s one thing but to take a guy with one year of production at rb as THE guy to pair with your other starter on your team wouldn’t be the wisest choice.

    • New Age's avatar New Age says:

Way too raw. Here’s a guy who hasn’t learned to block, has some issues with ball security, runs a bit high, was injured late, and hasn’t really learned the position. He has natural talent but I think he’s a huge project. I dont want huge projects before round 6-7 and he’ll go way before that.

  92. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Feel bad for this kid if he can’t raise his foot nor swing it out to the side…yikes!

The doctor who performed Notre Dame LB Jaylon Smith’s knee reconstruction is optimistic he will fully recover.
The doctor is far from an unbiased source, but optimism is better than the alternative. Smith suffered nerve damage in addition to tearing his ACL and LCL in the Fiesta Bowl. Despite the gruesome nature of the knee injury, the nerve damage is the real concern, but Dr. Dan Cooper believes the nerve has a “very good chance” to grow back in the next two to three months. As of now, however, Smith can neither raise his foot nor swing it out to the side, and it is not a given he gets those abilities back. A top-10 talent, Smith is likely looking at a Day 3 selection.

  93. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Newage, I just don’t see Zeke or Hargreaves being there @ #13. Lawson & Conklin have a much better chance of still being on the board.
