The Wedge Scouting Report: Paul Perkins, RB

Wedge ID PaulPerkins3

This new virus I am developing is going to be so hard to stop.

It’s not the biggest virus I’ve made to destroy a planetary population.  It’s not the fastest spreading either.  But its really hard to stop.  I’m gonna call it the “Shifty Virus”.

Kinda reminds me of a shifty running back from UCLA

PaulPerkins4

Paul Perkins was a very productive back for the
Bruins in his time at UCLA.

In fact, the undersized back won the 2015 Doak Walker Award given to the nation’s best running back.

I’m guessing the voters noted his 14 rushing touchdowns in 2015.  Or maybe they even considered his career 29 rushing touchdowns.

Oregon senior defensive tackle Wade Keliikipi (92) attempts to tackle UCLA freshman running back Paul Perkins (24) during the third quarter. The No. 3 Oregon Ducks play the No. 12 UCLA Bruins at Autzen Stadium in Eugene, Ore. on Oct. 26, 2013. (Michael Arellano/Emerald)

But Perkins was not used solely as a, rusher at UCLA.  He also had 3 career receiving touchdowns, gathering more than 2o catches over the last 3 seasons and gaining more than 200 receiving yards each of those three seasons.

Perkins looks like a good fit for this Dolphin’s offense since he can run and catch.

But his pass blocking leads a little bit to be desired.

PaulPerkins5

Maybe he should take pointers from his father, “Bruce” who played fullback in the NFL or his uncle Don, who played 8 seasons with the Cowboys.

But don’t pay too much attention to the blocking, he’s undersized and he can learn.

Instead, take a look at his rushing stats.  1343 yards in 2015 and 1575 in 2014.

How did Perkins get those yards?

PaulPerkins2

Well, the 210 pounder did not run through people and his 4.56 40 speed isn’t blazing by NFL standards.

But a jump cut here – a change in direction there.

This guy is shifty.  You might see a few defenders lose their shoes trying to stop him.

Which reminds me of a certain virus I’m making to destroy a species.

PerkinsVirus

If Paul Perkins was an alien weapon of destruction he would be “Wedge’s Prototype #453 Killing virus a/k/a the Shifty Virus”

Listening to the radio on the way home today they were talking about the NBA and mock drafts. The guy says, if you want to drive traffic to your site I’ll do mock drafts all yr long (he said he starts his in Nov.), the fans go crazy for them.

With that said I wonder how much of that really goes on in NFL mocks?

  2. Mike E. says:

    Steve

That’s all part of it man. Like I said, anything you can do to prevent the guy you’re coving from making a catch without a penalty. That of course includes good coverage and the QB chooses to look somewhere else.

    • steveccnv says:

Some people seem to forget what the primary job of a CB is, and you won’t see that in the stats.

      • Mike E. says:

Hate to say it, but Sean Smith was a good CB, and although he never had a lot of INT’s, many times QB’s chose the other CB. He also defended a lot of passes. I think he was very underappreciated here.

      • steveccnv says:

He defended with his hands too much, got lots of holding calls, and could’ve gotten a lot more. He wasn’t great when he had to cover the entire field, but in the redzone he was special.

Just curious. Do the small school guys ride on short buses?

  4. finfanrob says:

so did the fins win the draft yet. and what about brady, is he suspended from playing in the draft

Oh snap – Me and D are on the same wavelength big time!

damn, and i scroll past both your articles and his war and peace post. i think you two should get married.

  6. steveccnv says:

Omar’s stat about when Albert, Pouncey, and James start and finish a game the Fins are like 7-1. Doesn’t it seem like the OL is the key to the team? And if that’s the case, why not take a guy like Conklin at #13 to play guard, but could move into a Tackle spot if one of them get injured?

    • getterdone says:

Yesss! We need to draft a OT/OG somewhere in this draft.
Heck I’d even be ok with Ryan Kelly in the 2nd rd. He can play OG, preferably LG…and if Pouncey gets dinged up again, or his play tapers off and we need to cut the high cost in 2017, then Kelly can then lock down our Center position for the next several years.

cause if you pay attention, the o line has nothing to do with it. it is all about a qb that takes too many sacks and a defense that cant stop a pop warner team from running the ball.

A 32-year-old man jumped off the Brooklyn Bridge Tuesday morning – but miraculously survived the 135-foot plunge, authorities said.

The unidentified emotionally disturbed man walked to the middle of the iconic span’s pedestrian pathway and climbed across the Manhattan-bound roadway before leaping at around 9:15 a.m., cops said.

  28. The Flying Pig says:

I will believe the trade up when I see it

You don’t have to make that move 2 days before the draft
You can make it as the #3 comes up

These redraft trades are not the norm

Albeit they were moves for qbs
And I guess the #3 give you the ability to take the next best player

But again – I think you can make that move on the draft of you really want to make that move

    • Tim Knight says:

If you’re looking to move up to #3 why wait when we all know the QBs will go #1 and #2?

      • The Flying Pig says:

Bc you don’t know if the 3, r or 5 teams will take your guys

And you can keep digging for that info for a couple of days

This isn’t the way the draft works
Trades for the 1 2 and 3 picks before redraft even starts

        I’ve never heard of that

1 and 2 before the draft are odd enough as is

  34. Tim Knight says:

Piggy, if you want to get to #3 before anyone else does so you know you can get your guy, I don’t get why you wait until draft day? If you’re moving to #8 maybe you wait because there will be picks before you go, but #3 guarantees you the top 3 prospects on your board.

  35. getterdone says:

Dolphins CB Byron Maxwell expects to get to play more press coverage in 2016.
“That’s one of the things I do best,” Maxwell said. “(DC Vance Joseph) wants us to press and play man coverage and be aggressive with the receivers on the line and get them off their routes. … I love it down here.” Maxwell clearly believes he wasn’t unleashed enough in Philly. Maxwell excelled pressing in Seattle. He should be better than he was in 2015, but that’s not a high bar to clear.

    • Tim Knight says:

He actually played really well for a string of games that people forget. He went something like 11 games giving up low catches #’s, YPC and 0 TDs. He had a rough start and a couple of rough games at the end before getting the shoulder injury. As usual all people remember is the bad stuff.

      • getterdone says:

Yes, good points. I think he still has plenty of football left. Glad he feels more comfy in VJ’s system early on.

    • D says:

He can move good right now and still have the underlying knee issue, so to me this video shows he should be ready by start of TC, which i dont think has ever been in question, the fear is with what Tim reported the other day, if that indeed is the underlying problem, then his chance of injury is high, his chance of a shortened career is high, and there isnt really any repairing it since its a degenerative condition.

I’m probably going to be in a crawfish coma on Thursday.

    • Tim Knight says:

      Draft day food choice?

      • sb7mvp says:

No, the stars just happened to align that way. Big crawfish boil being thrown by one of the vendors my company does business with.

    • D says:

Over here in Mobile, during this season, they have a big crawfish boil at most of the local bar’s. AYCE for usually small cover charge (5ish) or conditional that you buy a couple of drinks. Inst policed very hard at all lol. Usually each bar has their own day they do it, so its possible to eat crawfish every day of the week for next to nothing in cost.

      • D says:

Thats pretty much a weekly thing too so during crawfish season you could pretty much eat it non-stop for several weeks. I like the potatoes and corn the most, the crawfish is good too but man the corn, potatoes, big chunks of cooked onion, mushrooms and olives sometimes,….delicious.

  43. D says:

After listening to Spence’s combine interview where the media just hammered him over and over about the drug issues, im OK with us taking him. He kept his composure even when i probably would have lost it on one of those reporters who just heard the same question answered before asking their version of the same friggin question. There were times he seemed to be getting ticked but he kept himself in check and moved forward. This was a BIG improvement over Senior Bowl week where a lot of people said his explanation was very aggressive, he didn’t seem at all humbled or come to closure with it, came off cocky and a bit asinine. Im still not sure how i feel about him being our 1st round selection but id be willing to take him for sure by our second or if we did trade back in the 1st id be on board with a later 1st round selection. There is still some risk there bringing him to south beach, but his combine interview went a long way with me.

    • dbolt48 says:

He’s as close to a Cameron Wake prototype that you’ll ever find.

    • Tim Knight says:

People mention South Beach all the time as a lure for bad behavior. Every city has places you can go for that lifestyle. It comes down to making sound judgements regardless of where you are.

      • dbolt48 says:

        You are correct Tim.

      • D says:

I under stand it, but the aura of South Beach is pretty big, its draws people in. A lot of the NFL guys who get in trouble, DUI, possession charges, club brawls, also get int rouble in Miami even not as part of our team lol. Its a part place and bad shit happens in party places. Miami doesnt hold exclusive rights, but you have to admit its probably higher than most as far as celebs getting in trouble.

Oh and Tim, that to old people looks like pure murder, to a young person they probably go meh. Any one of us tries that shit in the video and we probably vomit right after if we even make it through the whole routine.

  45. D says:

Look i agree that people can get in trouble anywhere, someone wants to party they will. South Beach however, does present a very crazy party atmosphere, many celebs come there and wind up in trouble. The main difference is that lure, is a occasional thing to those visiting, and to a person who may have issues avoiding that lifestyle, faced with it daily may make it hard for a guy who isnt truly past his demons. I think he is personally, his interview was pretty solid IMO.

    • D says:

To say there is no risk there, or no more risk than anywhere i think is a foolish thing to say. 12 step programs dont tell the person suffering from addiction to go hang out where it is around all the time, and to a guy like him, and Dion Jordan, partying is their addiction.

      • Tim Knight says:

Then we shouldn’t draft Spence, you’ve made your case. LOL

      • D says:

No you should just temper the selection with the potential risk. I said i think the guy is past his demons just from what i saw on the interview. I am presenting an argument about selecting him at a more appropriate point to balance out the risk/reward.

    • Tim Knight says:

Of course, it’s up to the person to not go there.

  46. D says:

    Rock,
It looks like its mostly just Barry Jackson stirring that pot. It was his article and his tweet that started that and in comments, both within the article itself and in response to other people replying to the article, he seems to have issue with Suh and dolphins FO choices in general. Go read the article he wrote and then read the comments below. You will see what i mean.

  47. getterdone says:

Besides being impressed with Ajayi, I read that Gase & staff like Damien Williams and have plans for him. Could be smoke screen, but we’ll see in camps.

    • D says:

Williams is a role player, and Gase does use backs in different roles, he may think that for what he has in mind, Williams is a good fit for one of those roles.

      • D says:

Dont think you would ever see Williams in a primary back situation for us unless shit went to hell in a handbasket and we had to fall WAY back to him.

      • getterdone says:

Right, I figured that. His pass catching is good.

    • Tim Knight says:

Williams is a really good receiver. I wonder if they make him a FB and utilize him that way? I don’t really know if he’s a good blocker or not.

      • D says:

He didnt seem to be a very good blocker, i think after Gillislee left, Miller was our best pass pro RB, Ajayi wasnt use much in those scenarios.

      • Tim Knight says:

I’m talking about run blocking too. I know FBs are a thing of the past, but who knows if Gase sees a need for one in some of his formations.

  48. Tim Knight says:

D, do you think Spence falls to the 2nd rd?

    • D says:

Yeah i think he could. His size is not prototypical. He lacks some of the core strength to really be seen as a perfect fit in a lot of systems, but his athletic traits and potential to turn into a Cam Wake kinda pass rusher probably pushes him to either late first, early second.

      • Tim Knight says:

Yeah at 6-2 250 I can’t see him as an every down DE in a 4-3 but probably as a 3-4 OLB. In a 4-3 he’d be a pass rush specialist but there is nothing wrong with that because he could play 25 very important snaps. But if that is the case with him, I can’t see him being a 1st rd pick for 4-3 teams.

  49. D says:

I think you are right though DBolt, thats who he reminds me of the most. You know another guy who i think could develop into that same kinda guy, and this may sound shocking, but Ian Seau has a lot of traits like Wake. He could be a late rounder who could be taken to develop like him.

  50. getterdone says:

So now I read Reshad Jones wnats $10-$11M per….where does it ever stop for these guys…smh

I’m so close to just boycotting spending on any tickets, merchandise, etc.

    • D says:

I think he is close o deserving of that. 9-10mil for sure. 11 would make him top paid safety in the NFL and i dont think he is quite as good as Thomas or a couple others.

      • getterdone says:

I wouldn’t offer him shit until we see what he does in VJ’s defense.
He’s in the middle of a healthy deal we already gave him. Play your contract out dude!

      • D says:

He is a FA at end of 2017, id be setting up the negotiations now, even if the deal doesn’t come until after the season. Another thing to consider is what other safeties between now and then get new contracts. 10-11 may be cheap if someone get a big pay day pushing the numbers up even more. Earlier deals a lot of times are cheaper deals.

  51. getterdone says:

I fear Noah Spence is like drafting OV at a higher round, with the same on & off production.

  52. Tim Knight says:

GD, the NFL is a business. Players beat up their bodies and teams show no loyalty to them when they lose a step and cut them like they don’t matter.

So players try to get everything they can. I think Jones is fairly paid because he’s not the best Safety in the league, but he’s one of the good ones. But he’s paid like one of the good ones and was probably overpaid early in his deal and now he’s matched it.

We’ll see when it’s mandatory to report.

  53. Mike E. says:

    New Blog Up!

  54. D says:

Wake coming out of college was 6’3 240, not overly strong upper body wise, only got 20 reps on the BP.

Spence is 6’2 250, 25 reps. They had pretty similar broad jump scores so the off the line explosiveness and instant acceleration would be pretty similar.

Ian Seau is also 6’2 250. 22 reps of 225, and a little less on the broad jump. From the video i watched of him he has pretty great technique too i think it helps him with not having the same level or explosiveness off the snap but he was effective in college and stood out pretty good in the film study.

  55. BoulderPhinfan says:

I don’t mind extending reshad jones but it sets bad precedent for other players.
