OMG! The Draft is Here!!

2016 NFL Draft

We’ve talked about it for a long time, in fact, some of us started talking about it before we drafted last year, in the 2015 NFL draft.  It never stops.  The NFL Draft, the place where dreams are either realized, or crushed.  There is always hope, always, because where else can you bring in new, young talent, and the potential to bring in 8 or more new faces to your team in one weekend.  This only happens with the NFL, and then after the draft, even more excitement is generated by the signing of players who went undrafted.  Sometimes, a player who was expected to be a mid round pick falls completely off the draft board, or in last year’s case, a possible top 10 pick, like La’el Collins, who due to bizarre circumstances with a murder case he had no part in yet was being questioned by police, had all 32 teams wipe him right off their draft boards.

Tomorrow will begin the madness that is the 2016 NFL Draft.  The Miami Dolphins currently hold 8 picks, starting from the #13 pick, #42, #73, #107, #147, #186, #227, and finally #231.  There is no guarantee that the Dolphins will use all those picks to get 8 players, they may trade up early in the 1st RD and use 2 or 3 picks to accomplish that.  They may trade back later in the into the 1st RD, and gain a couple of picks.  There are so many angles from which to look at either strategy, and a case can be made for both, without either of them being necessarily wrong or right.  For instance, supposedly, this draft plateaus from approximately pick #15 to pick #50, meaning the talent at #50 is nearly equal to the talent at #15.  We pick at #13, right around that imaginary line, so would trading back to pick up a couple of extra players in that range be smart?  Sure.  If all the supposed blue chippers are in the top 10, does it not make sense to trade up and get a superior talent and a player with a greater chance of making a big impact on our team right now?  Sure.

Whatever we do tomorrow, partly because of past failures, such as the Dion Jordan trade up to #3 in 2013, or just because of personal preferences, some of us will be angry at some of the selections we make, and yet others will be ecstatic.  That’s how it is.  I have to give all you guys/girls lots of credit for your dedication to the sport, and especially the entire draft process.  I know many of you tirelessly watch college football to find potential for the Miami Dolphins, and others, like myself, who don’t watch college ball, scour as many scouting reports, watch highlight reels, record and watch the entire week of Senior Bowl practices and the game itself, the same with the NFL combine.  The funny thing is, even the best of the best here, who really put in max effort, most likely don’t put in a fraction of the time our scouting staff put in, and our coaches and our GM put in.  Granted, that’s their job, we do it for (fun?).  Still, we should all probably just chill out with the negative feelings (I know I will have them), because these guys really did put in the effort to make the team better, and hopefully, it actually works.

I’m going to give you my picks for each round, without trade ups or trade downs, because those are just too hard to predict, it requires a lot of cooperation and desire from another team or two, and therefore, I’ll just do it straight up.  This draft is not who I want for our team, it’s how I expect it to happen.

RD 1 – Pick #13  RB Ohio State  – Ezekiel Elliott

First of all, let’s put that myth that if he’s elite, he’ll be gone by pick #10 nonsense, and if he’s not, he’ll be there.  Great NFL players are chosen all over the place, and these selections are made by a few parameters, GRADE, NEED (at a certain position) and VALUE.  Every team will have different metrics on those, and many teams obviously have different needs for both position, and the type of players they want to fill those positions.  For example, while Vernon Hargreaves may  be rated very high on most boards, a team that prefers bigger CB’s may not have him on their board early at all.  So back to Elliott.  He would most definitely be our best RB if he were to join our team.

Much has been made of Adam Gase’s use of a “running back by committee”.  I think it’s only fair to look at each situation, and why that may have been.  In Denver 2013,  first off, Gase had Peyton Manning., who threw the ball 659 times for nearly 5500 yards.  The Broncos drafted Montee Ball, and added him to a stable with Knowshown Moreno, Ronnie Hillman, and and CJ Anderson.  Moreno carried the ball 241 times, more than double the carries Montee Ball got at 120 carries. Is that really a RB by committee?  In 2014, again, Manning put up astronomical numbers, 597 pass attempts, over 4700 yards.  With Knowshown Moreno out of the picture, and Montee ball fat and out of shape, and fumbling often, Gase had little choice to try and find the hot hand.  CJ Anderson rushed 179 times, for 849 yards, and Ronnie Hillman 106 times, for 434.  Keep in mind, Ronnie Hillman was the better 3rd down back, and most of his action was on 3rd down, but again, the RB by committee aspect doesn’t necessarily show up, because the talent just simply wasn’t there to earn the bulk of the carries.

In Chicago, 2015, Adam Gase had 30 YO Matt Forte,  rookie Jeremy Langford, and 2nd YR RB Ka’Deem Carey.  Just for some background, Forte has never really been a bellcow RB, the most carries he had in his career was his rookie season when had a high of 316 carries.  He never broke 300 again, and has been slowly diminishing in carries the last few years, from 289 in ’13, to 266 in ’14, and last year 218.  Langford carried 148 times, and  Carey 43.  Clearly, Forte was his best guy, but at 30 YO, he didn’t overwork him, and for the most part, Chicago’s offense was a disappointment, despite Jay Cutler playing at his most efficient, with 21 TD’s and only 11 INT’s.  They sorely missed Brandon Marshall last season, and when Alshon Jeffery got hurt, that was it for this offense.

My point is, I don’t believe that Gase has a strategy to use his running backs nearly equally.  I think he had to in Denver, out of necessity, and in Chicago, he didn’t want to burn out his 30 year old star in Matt Forte.  Gase did say he wants a stable of RB’s, and I think that’s the responsible thing to do, considering what can happen if there’s a severe drop off in talent from your starter to your reserves.  make no mistake, if we draft Ezekiel Elliott, he will clearly be our best RB, and we will use him as such.   He will make a huge impact in our offense.

RD 2 – Pick #42  CB Houston – William Jackson III

We have a definite need at CB, no question about it, and we get the best we can in the 2nd RD.  Jackson gives another 6 foot CB who can play both press and zone coverage.  A good fit for what we’re looking for, Jackson will certainly be given every opportunity to start opposite Byron Maxwell.

RD 3 – Pick #73  OG Stanford – Joshua Garnett

As much as we need a CB, we need to shore up the interior OL.  We get the powerful OG Garnett from Stanford.  Garnett also will be given every opportunity to start somewhere on the OL, most likely LG, to compete with vet Jermon Bushrod.  That will leave a battle royale at RG, with Billy Turner, Jamil Douglas,  and Kraig Urbik .

RD 4  – Pick #107  OLB Akron –  Jatavis Brown

Excellent athletic player, with wheels (4.47 40).  Driven, team oriented player, lunch pail type of guy.  A little undersized at 5’11” 227, but a great guy to bring into the mix at OLB.

RD 5 – Pick #147   S Miami –  Deon Bush

Bush is a physical player who likes to hit, and when he does, forces fumbles.  Bush forced 5 fumbles in 2014.  He can also go up and get the ball with his 39 1/2″vertical.  Bush has only 4 INT’s in 4 years, along with 13 passes defensed.  Could be a good player down the line.

RD 6 – Pick #186  CB Virginia – Maurice Canady

Canady brings another CB with size to the team.  Not a physical player, but a player with talent that perhaps VJ can bring out.

RD 7 – Pick #227  DE Baylor  –  Shawn Oakman

Oakman is probably worth a flier in the 7th RD.  he could easily end up off the team before the season, but maybe, the light goes on, and he becomes a player.  I’d take tht chance this late in the game.

RD 7 – Pick #231   WR  Illinois – Geronimo Allison

OK, so I really just want to scream Genonimo!!!!!!  Do I take a chance and try to sign him after the draft?  No way!!!

  3. There is nobody saying the Bears love Elliot. Elliot is the only person who said the Bears showed the most interest in him. Other than that, there’s nothing. The ONE player in the 1st the Bears have been connected with for weeks now is Lawson and Floyd was the 2nd possibility. But, it may be that they’re thinking Jack could be available then.
However, if the Phins jump to #8 and take Lawson I would expect Wake to be dealt; possibly to the Eagles for Matthews and a pick.

    • D's avatar D says:

No telling where the report originated but i did see some team rumor sites saying Bears really like him. Talking about stuff like that is a big no no, so i dont know if Elliott is just using it to push his draft grade, get a person to trade up to take him or what.

I have heard that the Cowboys like Ramsey but would take Elliott if he is gone by 4. I have heard that the Browns might have interests in him. Also Bears some interest from the Ravens, but i think they go OT.

Exactly. Especially with the first 2 picks going with the QB position. That pushes everyone else down for at least the first 10 picks. They aren’t the best two players in the draft so it should benefit us, even at 13.
    ————————————-

Before the trades those 2 QBs were projected to go 2 and 7 or 8 to Philly, if either Clev or SF didn’t take one, so either way both were going before our pick. So the trades make no difference to us.

  13. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

New Dolphins coach Adam Gase is getting his first up-close work with quarterback Ryan Tannehill.

    So far he’s impressed.

“I didn’t realize how live his arm was,” Gase said. “The more I watch him throw, I mean, it’s effortless and that ball travels down the field pretty good. He’s hit some big plays and just underneath having some touch.”

Tannehill knows it will take time to learn a new offense, his third in five seasons. But he expects to be on the same page as Gase by the time the season arrives.

“It’s new, it’s tough,” Tannehill said. “There’s a learning curve. It’s a real thing to have a learning curve.

“That’s what we’re here for right now. We want to speed that thing up and get it going so when we get around to camp we can progress quickly through camp and be ready to go Week 1. It doesn’t matter whether you’re in your 10th year of the offense or first year, you have to be able to go out and perform Week 1.”

Tannehill said he and his teammates appreciate Gase’s mindset and his approach to the offense.

“The way he wants to attack the field, the multitude of things that we can do whether it’s on the ball, in the huddle, moving guys around creating matchups — he focuses a lot on that and that’s what this game is. It’s a game of matchups,” Tannehill said. “I’m excited for that to be able to get on the ball, work with him, get us in a good play and create those matchups where we can have an advantage.”

Gase’s hands-on approach is also winning points with Miami’s offensive players.

“You see him when I’m throwing, he’s rushing me in and making me move around in the pocket, just creating those havocs,” Tannehill said. “He’s giving receivers leverages. He’s hands on. He wants to have a hand in the offense and that’s important because when the guys see the head guy out there running around, breaking a sweat doing things to make us better, it creates even more of a level of respect.”

  14. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

They’re making a big deal about Suh not being at OTAs. Sure we’d like him to be there, but it isn’t going to change anything come the regular season, he’s still going to do what he do.

  15. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I have to agree with Steve that you can’t put much stock into anything that’s said. In fact, I’d go as far as to say nothing that happens until the games are actually played really matters, we’ve all heard the good and bad before, and until the action starts for real, it’s all not very important. It all serves to give us hope, or in the South Florida sports media’s case, give us agita.

OMG, then let’s close the blog down and meet back here the week before week 1 then. Why waste your time posting anything. It’s all BS right?…LOL smh

I thought some of the ways Gase interacts with the players was cool. That he’s rushing Tannehill himself, jamming the receivers, getting his hands on the players, working up a sweat. Being excited about his new oppty & liking what he see with Tanny’s arm, and Tanny liking the new coach, which is a relief, cause we all found out how the relationship wasn’t there with Philbin. Seemingly the connection is better here at least to start with.

This draft is so loaded that I would be happy with about 15-20 different guys for our 1st round pick. I have been a fan for decades and I can never remember a draft like this. Roughly in this order, I think any honest evaluator of football talent would be happy with a first round draft choice of

    Elliott
    Mack
    Ramsey
    Hargreaves
    Nkemdiche
    Tunsil
    Stanley
    Buckner
    Floyd
    Dodd
    Lawson
    Jackson 3
    Ragland
    Apple (meh-ish)
    Conklin
    Alexander
    A’Shawn Robinson
    Bosa (ugh)
    Rankins
    Chris Jones
    Reed

And that is not even including Lee, Spence, or Bullard who are all 1st rounders in my book.

    • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

      • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I listed a lot of DTs and DEs which are not positions of need for us this year, although it might be next year.
Even though we don’t need DT like we do RB, I would not be unhappy at all to add Nkemdiche. And of course Dodd and Lawson are two of my home boys from Clemson, so I would love to have them on my Dolphins team and Mackenzie Alexander is not only from Clemson but was also born and raised just a couple miles down the road from my house. (As was Sammy Watson) (and Edgerrin James and Deion Sanders as if it matters now.) But I think Alexander is not a good fit for our D.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Well that’s how guys are ranked but fans will you tell you half of those guys aren’t all that. LOL

I think this draft is loaded with solid prospects at a lot of positions and some are likely to become very good NFL players, but this isn’t an elite draft.

Of course I’m not saying you can’t enjoy what the coaches are saying, please do. What I’m saying is me personally, will take all the positive speak and file it under the “I’ve heard all this before, or at least heard something like it before”, and wait to see them actually make a difference in meaningful game. Call me a jaded SOB, but that’s how I feel. How many times in the last decade have we gone through OC and DC and Head Coaching changes? It’s crazy! We hear all these positive things, but unfortunately, the one constant is a less than .500 football team.

Here’s how I look at the draft, whoever we draft I hope they’re the bee’s knees. LOL

  31. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Tim I disagree completely. I think this is an elite draft except for QB, and I think that is why it gives off the hu-hum vibe. If there is no Luck/Griffin or Winston/Mariotta talent at the top, people tend to devalue the draft. But 90% of the men I mentioned above will be excellent pro players with the exception of the occasional inevitable injury plagued career. Except for Nkemdiche, Apple, and possibly Alexander, nearly every one of those guys above is a “can’t miss” prospect.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I don’t see many dominant prospects the way they’re graded. It’s more of a deep draft of good talent than a lot of special. Again at this time. Maybe after 3 years this draft will have proven to be very good. No elite QBs, no big time edge rusher or DT, one LT in Tunsil and I’m leery about him because the last few years all the top LTs struggled early on. The elite LB prospects both have knee issues. Not a top class of WR or TE, RB is deep with some top talent lead by Elliot. There are some nice corners but there are a lot of differing opinions on who’s the best. Not a lot of clear cut blue chip prospects at any position.

I think Ramsey will probably be the most sure thing whether at CB or S. I’d be shocked if he’s not as good as projected. He’s shown special skills like Sean Taylor did back in the day and maybe not as good as Sean.

Bosa was the #1 pick a few months ago and now some feel he could go anywhere in the top 10. That shows me a clutter of prospects teams could go with. Obviously this is just my view.

All I’m hoping for is we hit on half of our picks that make a difference on our team in a good way. 🙂

  34. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Oh and Tim also missing in this draft is the electrifying WR class like we have been accustomed to in the last few years. Amari Cooper or Sammy Watson and a couple three hot QBs make every fan get all juiced up way more than a bunch of solid grinders at DT and OT, but you need those guys just as much.

  35. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Naples, yes this draft seems a little deeper on the DL side of things. No, we really don’t need a DT, we spent a 2nd on Phillips last year, & Suh is here for awhile still. We made a solid depth add with Chris Jones.

But I do think we might want to make a DE pick fairly early, even in the 1st if Lawson, Dodd, or someone is highly regarded, maybe it will come in the 2nd like with Phillips last year.
Mario is over 30 & coming off a less than stellar year regardless of the reasons.
Wake is a ? branch? Dion a big ??? The rest of the DE’s are ?

So I wouldn’t be afraid of taking a DE early if you feel he can get some starts or play significant snaps in rotation grooming him as the heir apparent now rather than have a DE really green to start 2017….IMO.

As for your other thoughts, I agree with those too.
We need a stud CB now.
As for MLB, we may have that guy in a young Alonso, but I say draft some depth to groom there or to compete @ OLB in meantime as well.

RB, is a bit of a mystery. Ajayi could become that world class guy you spoke of. His production @ Boise St. was off the charts, maybe better than Zeke. So that I’ll leave up to the coaching staff & how they feel they want to approach the RB corp.

Either way I’m ok if they take Zeke, unless they give up too many picks to go get him….or I’m also ok with picking the ‘right’ complimentary RB a few rounds later after round 1.

Speaking about his degenerative knee condition, Jack said, “It’s nothing extreme. Down the line, possibly, I could have microfracture surgery — potentially. Who knows what will happen?” Jack added that “to play three years in this league would be above average.” That’s obviously not what NFL front offices want to hear. Teams don’t draft players in the top 10 hoping they’ll play three years. Jack may have more natural talent than any player in this draft, but his health remains a huge question mark.

Naples, CB this year is like WR last year and half of them didn’t produce with Parker flashing late in the season. He might end up being right there with Cooper when it’s said and done. Anyone heard from White, Perriman, Agholor and Dorsett? 😉

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I was never impressed with Perriman or Agholor and Dorsett was over-drafted and put on a team already stacked with WRs. But Cooper, Parker, and Kev White are/will be awesome.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

To be fair White, Perriman and Dorsett dealt with injuries, Parker too. But Parker flashed the best of all of them down the stretch. He averaged over 21 YPC and made impact plays. He’s a mix of Michael Irvin and A.J. Green.

I’d be really disappointed if Parker had a sub par year. To me he is the difference in this team taking the next step on offense. He’s that big receiver with YAC, perimeter and red zone ability. He’s a special talent. 6-3 210 sub 4.5 speed and elite ball skills. That’s what you’re looking for and we got him last year at 60%. He’s a 100% now. He’s a game changer.

Gase is drooling over Landry, Parker, Stills and Cameron. He should. Like in hockey, that should be a line that wins 2-1.

Get the running game going and even better. That could change the entire dynamic of the offense.

#13 Zeke Elliot RB- he drops to us we pounce.

#42 Noah Spence OLB- talent galore and he meets a need. Risk the off field stuff. He has had his major scare and wants it now.

#73 Roberto Aguayo PK- we will be set for years. No more Sturgis, Carpenter or Franks. “Shit, why couldn’t he make that”.

#107 Cyrus Jones CB – got our own cyrusthevirus now again meets a need, coupled with talent.

#147 Sebastion Tretola OG- Big mauler to compete with the other young OL.

#186 Rees Odhiambo OG/OT- More of the big bruisers I want this OL fixed once and for all.

#227 Elandon Roberts ILB- watch him bang heads.

#231 Moritz Boelringer WR- from Germany and is a mountain of a man for a WR. I’m sure his name means Bellringer. Thump those pissy little CBs like Grimes all over the place. Could always make him a TE.

To quote Richard Rawlins “Get a load of that”.

  75. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Lee

I love ya man, but is it really important to be set for years at K? I don’t worry about the kicker in the least. Franks was serviceable last year, and he routinely puts the ball in the end zone on kickoffs. I’d rather be set at the 22 position players who are on the field the majority of the game than waste a very valuable 3rd RD pick on a K, even if he’s a great kicker.

    • jetsssuck's avatar jetsssuck says:

A second rule change for 2016 might add even more value to kickers. The day the NFL voted to move touchbacks from the 20 to the 25-yard line, Aguayo was working out privately for the Raiders. Special teams coordinator Brad Seely promptly asked Aguayo to show him high hang-time kickoffs aimed within a yard or two of the goal line. Some teams may try to adopt a strategy of trying to pin a returner deep instead of going for the touchback, something that Aguayo says Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher asked him to do on about 70 percent of his kickoffs

  77. uwantwat's avatar uwantwat says:

Yes, I do want that PK, I did my research on him and he rated higher than SeaBass who went in the 1st in his draft. I’m just sick and tired of holding breath every time our K attempts anything. It’s harder with the longer extra points now. This bloke is very, very good. I hope he is still there in the 3rd. I don’t rate this draft all that high after pick 15. The rest of them are pretty even IMO. I’m sure there will be the usual ones who go on and have great careers but for the main they are average. I liken it to the draft where we took the RB @2 when we needed a QB or WR and passed on Rodgers and Braylon Edwards. That draft was a poor one.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I would be shocked, and angry if we went with a PK in the 3rd RD. We have so many more pressing needs. Lee, I think like I said, this draft plateaus after the top 15, but say 15-50 are all about the same talent, so that really makes #50 as valuable as #15. Can’t se throwing it away on a K, when in reality, that wasn’t even an issue for us last year.

  78. uwantwat's avatar uwantwat says:

Mike…I understand where you are coming from but this bloke is a special talent. Cast your mind back to how many SBs have been won and lost by a PK. Plenty! Frankly, Franks would scare the crap outta me. (puns are free of charge)

  79. uwantwat's avatar uwantwat says:

Franks followed the league wide trend. There were a lot of FGs and XPs missed last year

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Lee, we need to get over .500 before we can be in the SB with a great kicker. I do respect both yours and jetssucks opinions, and you may well be right, that Aguayo is our pick. I just don’t think missed FG’s was our issue, it was not scoring TD’s, and allowing far too many TD’s.

  80. jetsssuck's avatar jetsssuck says:

didn’t minnesota lose in playoffs when the kicker missed a given FG. FSU NEVER missed anything within 40 yrds and kicks 70 yarder’s in warm ups.

      • jetsssuck's avatar jetsssuck says:

yeah, but what does that have to do with kickers?

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

LOL – We need CB’s!!! That’s what. Last year we couldn’t protect Tannehill, so we need to draft an OG to compete and possibly win either the LG or RG position. Drafting a K doesn’t help us do that.

  81. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

QB- check starter and BU in place, Tanny and Moore

RB- Starter and BU in place,Ajayi, Williams, DT3 and Pead

WR- Parker, Stills, Landry, Hazel and Whalen. Could use a late rounder adding one.

OL- Albert, Pouncey, James,Bushrod, Douglas, Turner, Thomas, Young plus a couple of youngsters.
You have a starting quality line already. Not a NEED.

TE- Cameron, Sims and Stoneburner Set there.

DT- Suh, Phillips, Mitchell, Leing plus a couple more ( can’t stuffed looking them up)

DE- Wake,Williams, Jordan, Fede, Moore plus more

LB- Alonso, Jenkins, Misi, C. McCain. Hewitt, Hull, Vigil plus a couple more.

S- Jones, IAQ, Aitkins,Thomas Plus some bodies

CB- Maxwell. Lippett. B. McCain Plus a host of them.

    P- Darr

    PK- Franks

    LS- Denny

The whole point of me writing this out is show you we could field a whole team right now and win games.
Do we have NEEDS NO ! What we need to to have upgrades in some positions, which means we draft BPA at each pick.
