OMG! The Draft is Here!!

2016 NFL Draft

We’ve talked about it for a long time, in fact, some of us started talking about it before we drafted last year, in the 2015 NFL draft.  It never stops.  The NFL Draft, the place where dreams are either realized, or crushed.  There is always hope, always, because where else can you bring in new, young talent, and the potential to bring in 8 or more new faces to your team in one weekend.  This only happens with the NFL, and then after the draft, even more excitement is generated by the signing of players who went undrafted.  Sometimes, a player who was expected to be a mid round pick falls completely off the draft board, or in last year’s case, a possible top 10 pick, like La’el Collins, who due to bizarre circumstances with a murder case he had no part in yet was being questioned by police, had all 32 teams wipe him right off their draft boards.

Tomorrow will begin the madness that is the 2016 NFL Draft.  The Miami Dolphins currently hold 8 picks, starting from the #13 pick, #42, #73, #107, #147, #186, #227, and finally #231.  There is no guarantee that the Dolphins will use all those picks to get 8 players, they may trade up early in the 1st RD and use 2 or 3 picks to accomplish that.  They may trade back later in the into the 1st RD, and gain a couple of picks.  There are so many angles from which to look at either strategy, and a case can be made for both, without either of them being necessarily wrong or right.  For instance, supposedly, this draft plateaus from approximately pick #15 to pick #50, meaning the talent at #50 is nearly equal to the talent at #15.  We pick at #13, right around that imaginary line, so would trading back to pick up a couple of extra players in that range be smart?  Sure.  If all the supposed blue chippers are in the top 10, does it not make sense to trade up and get a superior talent and a player with a greater chance of making a big impact on our team right now?  Sure.

Whatever we do tomorrow, partly because of past failures, such as the Dion Jordan trade up to #3 in 2013, or just because of personal preferences, some of us will be angry at some of the selections we make, and yet others will be ecstatic.  That’s how it is.  I have to give all you guys/girls lots of credit for your dedication to the sport, and especially the entire draft process.  I know many of you tirelessly watch college football to find potential for the Miami Dolphins, and others, like myself, who don’t watch college ball, scour as many scouting reports, watch highlight reels, record and watch the entire week of Senior Bowl practices and the game itself, the same with the NFL combine.  The funny thing is, even the best of the best here, who really put in max effort, most likely don’t put in a fraction of the time our scouting staff put in, and our coaches and our GM put in.  Granted, that’s their job, we do it for (fun?).  Still, we should all probably just chill out with the negative feelings (I know I will have them), because these guys really did put in the effort to make the team better, and hopefully, it actually works.

I’m going to give you my picks for each round, without trade ups or trade downs, because those are just too hard to predict, it requires a lot of cooperation and desire from another team or two, and therefore, I’ll just do it straight up.  This draft is not who I want for our team, it’s how I expect it to happen.

RD 1 – Pick #13  RB Ohio State  – Ezekiel Elliott

First of all, let’s put that myth that if he’s elite, he’ll be gone by pick #10 nonsense, and if he’s not, he’ll be there.  Great NFL players are chosen all over the place, and these selections are made by a few parameters, GRADE, NEED (at a certain position) and VALUE.  Every team will have different metrics on those, and many teams obviously have different needs for both position, and the type of players they want to fill those positions.  For example, while Vernon Hargreaves may  be rated very high on most boards, a team that prefers bigger CB’s may not have him on their board early at all.  So back to Elliott.  He would most definitely be our best RB if he were to join our team.

Much has been made of Adam Gase’s use of a “running back by committee”.  I think it’s only fair to look at each situation, and why that may have been.  In Denver 2013,  first off, Gase had Peyton Manning., who threw the ball 659 times for nearly 5500 yards.  The Broncos drafted Montee Ball, and added him to a stable with Knowshown Moreno, Ronnie Hillman, and and CJ Anderson.  Moreno carried the ball 241 times, more than double the carries Montee Ball got at 120 carries. Is that really a RB by committee?  In 2014, again, Manning put up astronomical numbers, 597 pass attempts, over 4700 yards.  With Knowshown Moreno out of the picture, and Montee ball fat and out of shape, and fumbling often, Gase had little choice to try and find the hot hand.  CJ Anderson rushed 179 times, for 849 yards, and Ronnie Hillman 106 times, for 434.  Keep in mind, Ronnie Hillman was the better 3rd down back, and most of his action was on 3rd down, but again, the RB by committee aspect doesn’t necessarily show up, because the talent just simply wasn’t there to earn the bulk of the carries.

In Chicago, 2015, Adam Gase had 30 YO Matt Forte,  rookie Jeremy Langford, and 2nd YR RB Ka’Deem Carey.  Just for some background, Forte has never really been a bellcow RB, the most carries he had in his career was his rookie season when had a high of 316 carries.  He never broke 300 again, and has been slowly diminishing in carries the last few years, from 289 in ’13, to 266 in ’14, and last year 218.  Langford carried 148 times, and  Carey 43.  Clearly, Forte was his best guy, but at 30 YO, he didn’t overwork him, and for the most part, Chicago’s offense was a disappointment, despite Jay Cutler playing at his most efficient, with 21 TD’s and only 11 INT’s.  They sorely missed Brandon Marshall last season, and when Alshon Jeffery got hurt, that was it for this offense.

My point is, I don’t believe that Gase has a strategy to use his running backs nearly equally.  I think he had to in Denver, out of necessity, and in Chicago, he didn’t want to burn out his 30 year old star in Matt Forte.  Gase did say he wants a stable of RB’s, and I think that’s the responsible thing to do, considering what can happen if there’s a severe drop off in talent from your starter to your reserves.  make no mistake, if we draft Ezekiel Elliott, he will clearly be our best RB, and we will use him as such.   He will make a huge impact in our offense.

RD 2 – Pick #42  CB Houston – William Jackson III

We have a definite need at CB, no question about it, and we get the best we can in the 2nd RD.  Jackson gives another 6 foot CB who can play both press and zone coverage.  A good fit for what we’re looking for, Jackson will certainly be given every opportunity to start opposite Byron Maxwell.

RD 3 – Pick #73  OG Stanford – Joshua Garnett

As much as we need a CB, we need to shore up the interior OL.  We get the powerful OG Garnett from Stanford.  Garnett also will be given every opportunity to start somewhere on the OL, most likely LG, to compete with vet Jermon Bushrod.  That will leave a battle royale at RG, with Billy Turner, Jamil Douglas,  and Kraig Urbik .

RD 4  – Pick #107  OLB Akron –  Jatavis Brown

Excellent athletic player, with wheels (4.47 40).  Driven, team oriented player, lunch pail type of guy.  A little undersized at 5’11” 227, but a great guy to bring into the mix at OLB.

RD 5 – Pick #147   S Miami –  Deon Bush

Bush is a physical player who likes to hit, and when he does, forces fumbles.  Bush forced 5 fumbles in 2014.  He can also go up and get the ball with his 39 1/2″vertical.  Bush has only 4 INT’s in 4 years, along with 13 passes defensed.  Could be a good player down the line.

RD 6 – Pick #186  CB Virginia – Maurice Canady

Canady brings another CB with size to the team.  Not a physical player, but a player with talent that perhaps VJ can bring out.

RD 7 – Pick #227  DE Baylor  –  Shawn Oakman

Oakman is probably worth a flier in the 7th RD.  he could easily end up off the team before the season, but maybe, the light goes on, and he becomes a player.  I’d take tht chance this late in the game.

RD 7 – Pick #231   WR  Illinois – Geronimo Allison

OK, so I really just want to scream Genonimo!!!!!!  Do I take a chance and try to sign him after the draft?  No way!!!

Markey, the only way Trump loses the general to Billary is due to more rigging which she’s (her camp) has been doing to Sanders all along. But she will not win a fair election or carry a popular majority, she’s even got women turning against her finally, as well as smart Dems & minorities.

The only way she wins is if she’s ‘selected’, by the establishment, which we know she is, so it’s up to Trump & his supporters & supporters of a free democracy to keep shedding light on the corrupt voting process!

It’s the only way to pull the elitist grips off our necks…IMHO

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

Read some credible polling. Trump has no chance. The only issue is how bad do the Republicans lose the senate because of Trump and how much of their lead in the house do they lose because of Trump. He is polling terrible in the general electorate.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I’ve heard that too. A friend of my brother-in-law who we hung out with down in Florida for the Dolphins/Giants game is a journalist/reporter/writer who covers politics, said said that back in December based on his experience with elections. He’s left of center but not a hardcore liberal, and he was speaking from a pure reporting stance, not a bias. He’s a good guy.

I agree. They just need to keep playing commercials about all the crap he’s been saying this year. Keep reminding people.

  2. Ken's avatar Ken says:

Gotta run. MD appointment. Be back on during the draft. Hulk may get very angry.

  3. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Tim,
I was just screwing around. But, you base your evaluation of that trade on everything going right…as in both Kiko and Maxwell both playing a lot and playing well. What if they don’t? What if we could have used the draft to fill those slots on the team with cheaper, younger and possibly just as good or better talent? That’s just as likely. Then, on top of that, you give away MORE picks to get back into the position you started with…further limiting your draft choices?
    ***
Both Maxwell and Kiko better turn out to be significant contributors for at least a few years for that trade to be a good trade. One good year out of them isn’t good enough for me…but we’ll see.

    • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

      What If’s??
What If we had 5 picks in the top 85 picks like in 2013 & nobody from the draft worked out?

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I’m pretty sure their major contribution will be in 2016 and won’t extend to far out

It really depends what happens between 8-12 tonight to evaluate whether it was worth it
but I do think they are both potenentially short terms additions which may work fine if you don’t miss out on a long term talent

they both have the skills to start
      they need to be healthy
if they can pull that off
and/or we don’t miss out on a really good player in those 4 spots
then I think the trade is favorable

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

That part of it is already done, they acquired those players because they wanted them. They expect them to improve our defense. It’s no different then acquiring players in FA or the draft.

  4. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Bolt, I like James Bradberry too. He’s what VJ is looking for @ 6’1 211 sub 4.5 speed and some say he’s better than teammate Jaquiski Tartt who played well in San Fran as a rookie, albeit @ S.

  5. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    Yeah DBolt
I think when you get past the first few prospects
    the rest are developmental guys
and in that case it makes no difference whether you g small school or not

I don’t think its a very deep draft in any position, except DT, which we don’t need
    😦

  6. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

LOL @ Ken about credible polling. If you saw credible ‘real’ polling instead of the MSM BS, then you’d see that Billary isn’t a slam dunk over Trump, she is over Cruz or Kasich tho.
Her own words awhile back was that she is more worried about Trump than the other guys who have no sand in their pants, they’re pushovers!

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Trump is the only one who could beat her because he can win her states. But a lot of polling says it won’t happen.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I guess people didn’t think Trump had a chance against the other republicans and that turns out wrong

but I tend to think he has little chance to win the general election

      its just a different dynamic

general election voters aren’t a base you play to

they are mostly of the mindset of choosing between the lesser of two evils

and so there is that “who do you dislike more” psychology

I’m not sure attacking Hillary (which is what I expect from Trump) won’t lead to people thinking less of Trump
Its one thing to insult some one your audience already hates
its another to try to convince people they she shouldbe insulted

I wonder if there are people telling Trump to tone it down in the general election
the general electionis a different game

  7. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    gdp
Yes, what ifs, that’s why I don’t understand how folks can say it was a good trade before either player has played a snap for us! Lol
    ****
Personally, I would have preferred to have a shot at one of the top two players at DE, OL or CB. Folks around here talk a lot about players we now have no shot at getting, more than likely.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

They do have a proven body of work though. Nobody in the draft has proven a thing in the NFL.

    • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Well, the good trade part was we got 2 young vets that have shown it on the field as starters at their positions, which were positions of need for us.
We didn’t lose our full compliments of picks other than drop back 5 slots in the 1st.

What happens from there is anybody’s guess. But if Maxwell & Alonso stay healthy, I can almost guarantee you that they will start & be productive doing it.

  8. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Tim,
It’s different because we had to give up a top 10 spot to do the trade….so it’s not like an FA decision. It cost us something. It’s all in how much you value picks. I tend to value them more than some on the board, I guess.

    • markeyh's avatar markeyh says:

To drop down a few slots and get two needed veteran players is worth the risk IMO. Remember how bad our 2nd and 3rd teams looked last year? Other than a few non starters we need to completely overhaul this roster…

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

But top 10 isn’t a set in stone thing year to year. If we had 8 through 16 with the same grades top 10 means nothing.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

We won’t know if it’s a good trade until this season plays out. If both are starting, and having good seasons, it was a good trade. If neither of them are, it was a bad trade

  9. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Piggy, for some reason I can’t view the polls in Firefox but I can in Safari. I’m not sure why. I looked into it and can’t seem to get it to work.

  10. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Piggy, Trump won’t have to ‘attack’ Hillary. All he has to do is simply point out the several 800lb Elephants in the room that are always following her that the establishment controlled MSM is afraid to really bring up.

Most anyone else would be in jail by now, or with -0 credibility to ever hold any office higher than school crossing guard, & I wouldn’t even feel safe with her doing that….smh…lol

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Its not his style not to attack
He could take subtle jabs at some of the dirt on Hillary
      but that’s not Trump
He will go at her aggressively and that is a dangerous line to walk when your audience is voters who are no predisposed to already hate her

If I told you “that woman is about to do something bad” you might dislike that woman and like me. If I told you “that ugly whore is about to do something bad” you might judge me

unless you already thought she was an ugly whore

LOL, I love it….at least he doesn’t pull punches & go all mealy mouth PC speak,…I suspect he’ll do the same with foreign leaders when negotiating terms for America.

  11. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Tim,
Yeah, that’s true. There is more risk…and possibly greater upside…with the unknown of a draft pick, but we’re talking about a very high pick with a greater degree of certainty. I do think there are question marks with Maxwell and Kiko too though. They both have a little unknown to them too. Kiko is a cheap risk, so getting him was kind of a no-brainer. Maxwell is a different story. I’m gonna move on though….it’s done and there’s nothing to be done about it now but hope for the best.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Yeah I’m in wait and see mode too. After last year I can’t be overly optimistic about the team until I see it.

    • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

kiko was a 2nd rd pick, so I don’t see how an early LB pick is gonna be automatically better than him with both being in equal health.
Maxwell proved himself and got a huge FA payday in Philly, but was not used correctly, something we’re all to familiar with over the years with personnel & poor coaching.

  12. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Dodd seems to have dropped out of the 1st rd. I never see him talked about there anymore.

    • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Shhh, would be great to get our CB of choice in the 1st, then land Dodd or Ogbah in the 2nd.
Then RB, OG, LB BPA in the 3rd., same with the 4th.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I never understand these draft trends

      timing is everything

Its hard to be a really top notch prospect for a long time

One thing about VH3 worth noting
he was considered the best CB in college football by many after the 2015 draft
and he is still regarded that way

Ramsey and Tunsil are a couple of other guys who have had lasting power during the process

    MikeE,
I think getting a guy to start for a year just isn’t enough. I would like more than that. Plus, I’d definitely rather develop draft picks if all we get from the trade was one year from them. What good does that do us?

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I don’t think it’s a one year deal. Maxwell is signed for a few more years unless he absolutely sucks which I see no reason to think he will. If Alonso is healthy and plays really well we’ll likely re-sign him.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I didn’t mean that’s the end of it, but we’ll know if we made the right move. Maxwell will be here for a few years. If Alonso plays well this year, we’ll probably try and re-sign him.

5’9 185 is what Brent Grimes is.
    VH3 is 5’10 1/2 204
    Apple is 6’0 5/8 199

So you have VH3 who is thickerbodied, and like 2 inches shorter than Apple. This you think makes up for apple not being as NFL ready?

FFR cant tell you how much 2 inches can change some things, but Hargreaves makes up for that in hops, too bad Apple declined to do the vert jump or i could give ya how many inches difference there.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I tend to think VH3 might be a little shorter than listed
      but I see your point
Grimes is definitely a little guy

      VH3 is shorter than most
      Alexander is about 5’11

I don’t think that stuff matters so much

The only exceptions to this are medical clearance players, who if they were cleared, or even worse, they were moved back because they didn’t.

It’s funny how angry Piggy is about the CB size thing. I remember hating the Ireland/Parcells size parameters. If you remember, he didn’t veer from them at all, which is why if he does want CB’s 6’0 or taller, Hargreaves won’t be our pick.

  40. D's avatar D says:

I dont think Brent being cut had anything to do with height, i think it was declining play and play style. Brent is off man coverage corner, he’s pretty good at it. That isnt the system we are running. I think their desire in a Cb is less about size and more about scheme fit. Larger CB are generally press-zone CB’s and thats where the correlation ends.

One thing we can take out of us targeting Elliot, we’re going to be committed to running the ball. We have too if we bring him in. It also could signal more under center and play-action too. 🙂

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

it might be the best thing for Ryan Tannehill

      I agree
it means we commit to the run
and that really takes a lot of pressure off Tannehill

can you imagine drafting Elliot and then giving him 4 touches like we did with Lamar Miller

      • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Shows ya how pathetic the coaching was here before. No wonder Tanny, the OL & others struggled…smh!

Gase has to be a huge step in the right direction….IMO.

    • markeyh's avatar markeyh says:

They say Gase likes to pass, I see no need to draft Elliot when there are so many more RB’s later in the draft to complement Ajayi. I would hate to see them give up picks to move up and get him.

      • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Of course he likes to pass, it’s a passing oriented league, but Gase also has shown he likes a sensible balance and a time to run effectively during the game too.

      • markeyh's avatar markeyh says:

I would not say they have no faith in Ajayi more than they need to add one or two more RB’s with different skill sets that complement him. One with speed and one with maybe more power or can catch the ball better for example.

    • markeyh's avatar markeyh says:

That is why RB by committee is the best option and therefore no need to draft Elliot IMO.

      • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

I’m with ya there in a way. It would say they have no faith in Ajayi, but more importantly, it would cost us needed picks in other early to mid rounds.

I kinda thought you were making a case that he is a RB by committee guy

  57. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

This is what we have to be careful of when wanting guys like Spence, Calhoun, Floyd, etc.

49ers second-year OLB Eli Harold has bulked up from 247 pounds to 270.
Harold was listed at 247, but hinted he was actually playing closer to 240. His goal for 2016 is 265. Harold made little impact as a rookie, notching zero sacks on 344 snaps. His technique was a major question mark coming out of Virginia, though his athleticism was viewed as a plus. The weight gain will dampen that a bit, but in theory, make Harold harder to block.

  58. markeyh's avatar markeyh says:

Why would a team that says they are more than one player away trade away picks when they still are drafting in the top half of the draft?

  63. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

If we were really interested in Elliot why we move from 8 to 13
the first 2 picks are QBs

    Look at that list above
    Push Elliot back 2 slots
    that #7

trading down and then trading up is just crazy to me

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Dude, come on you know we did it to add two players and the QBs weren’t at the top yet. Why does this baffle everyone?

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

bc of the idea that we covet a player in the draft

if that is true – you wouldn’t move down and get yourself out of position to take him

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Well we’ll see if that’s true but it’s about adding talent, not just picks and how you use them. People get too caught up in picks and rounds, it’s about players.

  64. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

We didn’t re-sign Miller though. It’s so different when you’re drafting a guy, as compared to signing him to a new big contract. If we draft Zeke, mark my word, he will be getting the large majority of the carries.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

To answer that question though, I think we’d probably go the hot hand approach, like he did in Denver. I don’t think either CJ Anderson or Ajayi are so talented that they would be the man. I think Elliott would be.

To those wondering, shipping out of state is a big deal for a brewery. The business plan is to start in the 3 contiguous counties to SB and than move to the LA market. After that we’ll probably start doing some very select out of market distribution, but the logistics get tricky. You almost never get your kegs back, and it’s hard to assure your beer will be kept cold in transit…which, most micro-craft brews are non-pasteurized so they should be treated like a perishable.

To the question of what type, check out the website (Mike posted it above) and click on the section about the beers. I have 6 different portfolio beers and 2-4 specialty beers as taproom only pouring at any given time.

I do make 2 hoppy beers, the Greatland IPA and the Lazy Eye Double IPA. None of them are face puckeringly bitter, but both have lots of hop flavor and aroma. The pale is somewhat hoppy as well, but more about balanced hops and malt flavors…

  68. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Based on that congruent list, I’d say it falls perfectly for
    1st DE Shaq Lawson
    2nd CB Artie Burns
    3rd LB Deion Jones

  71. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    Tim
    if we really coveted Elliot
it would probably supersede the need to get 2 veteran starters

If you think that much of a prospect
I just don’t think you risk putting yourself out of position

Its one thing if you believe he will be there at 13
but I’m guessing if they loved Elliot enough to trade up for him they have loved him a long time

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

What if they thought the trade they made, including having to trade up to get whoever they want was worth it. It’s just 5 spots

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

then I don’t think they would have their mind set on 1 particular prospect

trading up for a guy is kind of a bold move

I think you would really like a guy if you did that
and you would not have risked putting yourself in a worse sport just a month before that if you felt that way

Mike, why take Raggy @ #13 when we have a MLB in Alonso?
Draft a MLB depth guy to groom later in round 5….IMHO.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Because Alonso has an enlarged aorta on his knee. lol He hasn’t been the same player he once was. If Ragland really slips, maybe we’ll take him at #42. Do you know the details on what the issues are with an enlarged aorta? I surely don’t

Id be ok with those picks, IF Hargreaves was gone. Hargreaves is a day 1 starter, i dont have that confidence in Burns. Not shitting on your guy, he just needs more cook time.

If Hargeaves is there i would go
    Hargreaves
    Bullard/Dodd/Spence, whichever is still there.
    Jones

I think that gives us 3 day 1 starters and impact players.

    • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

I think Hargreaves will need cook time also. Rare to see any CB’s come into the league and play lights out right away. We’ll need good safety help. glad Isis is a vet, good signing.

But yeah, I could go that way too, VH3 in the 1st, then Dodd/Ogbah/Bullard
OLB Jones in the 3rd. He could be special.

Im not a fan of Vodka straight up but i do love a Bloody Mary, there are a few mixes down here and some in New Orleans that are about the tastiest thing ever. 88. markeyh's avatar markeyh says:

More First Round options to look for
    • Trade up for Jalen Ramsey
    • Trade up to get Ezekiel Elliot
    • Trade up to take Myles Jack
    • Stay at 13 and take Ezekiel Elliot (Risk he will fall)
    • Stay at 13 and select Eli Apple
    • Stay at 13 and take Shaq Lawson
    • Trade Down and garner more picks
    • Take the risk on Jaylon Smith in the 3rd if we can get an extra 3rd round pick

The fact cannot be hidden that Miami needs to infuse some youth and talent more on the defensive side of the ball than any other position as they have young talent on offense. Now they could use another RB but I am not sold that they have to have the top RB in the draft Ezekiel Elliot as the true need is CB and there are some CB’s that rank high enough that at 13 they will be good selections.
