    Ken

We have Maxwell, McCain, Lippett, Howard, Ekpre-Olomu, and whatever guys we picked up as UDFA’s, and Chimdi Chekwa who was on the roster. We only drafted 1 CB, Howard. Lucas is a safety

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Considering McCain is 5’9″, not sure he can ever be considered for anything other than the nickel due to what we’re looking for with size.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

Everything I seen said Lucas is a CB

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

He’s played more corner than safety but I see him as a nickel guy pushing McCain and Thomas. A dime guy as well and a backup DB with versatility.

  2. Randy's avatar Randy says:

Leave naples alone. He’s been hiting the koolaid hard for days. Lol

    • Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

      James Walker
      ESPN Staff Writer

According to new Dolphins OL Laremy Tunsil, one of the first people to contact him after the draft was starting QB Ryan Tannehill. “He texted me (Thursday),” Tunsil said. “So that’s a sign of (knowing) he has my back.”

  3. Randy's avatar Randy says:

I still don’t understand why Philly would trade away Kiko if they really felt he was past the recovery from his injury and would return to his rookie form. You don’t basically give away a tackling machine at MLB who is young and cheap. It makes no sense.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

Because he did not show he was back to his rookie form

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I think he was part of the deal for us to take Maxwell’s contract off their hands which I think is the dark horse of the deal. We’ll swap #8 to #13 but we also want Alonso.

If they both play well we won that deal easily.

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Howie in Philly is worse than Ireland as a GM.
Just the DeMarco Murray thing is ridiculous. Then signing Bradford to an extension AND trading up to take a franchise QB? Weird if not downright stupid.

  4. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Ken

Matthews was never really intended to be our #1, he was there because Stills is a puss, and Parker was hurt. lol

  5. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

  6. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Ken,
If so, then why would we take him? B/c if that’s the case..then the trade is really just Maxwell for a swap of 8 to 13…and that sucks.

    • Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

because hurt he is better than the LB’s we had?

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I think he was part of the deal for us to take Maxwell’s contract off their hands which I think is the dark horse of the deal. We’ll swap #8 to #13 but we also want Alonso.

If they both play well we won that deal easily.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

Because he is still probably better than anything we have. We had the worst LB corp in NFL last year

  7. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Ken

I actually think Tim is right, he may be in competition with McCain for the slot position. It seems pretty obvious they want bigger corners, although I like McCain, and I think you can give up a little size, especially covering those quick PITA receivers the Patriots roll out there like Edelman.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

McCain is a good option for those quick twitch WRs because that’s what he is. We want to be big and physical on the outside for sure though.

  8. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Mike, I think you may be right. Coaching will show us a lot with the personnel we have now.
Seems they thought the offense was horrible & that the defense will be ok under Vance Joseph.
Which means Coyle was horrible working with what he had.
I remember Suh already protesting early in training camp by not putting cleats on & coming out on the practice field with sneakers on. He didn’t like the install.

  9. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    wyoming,
Is he? I’m not so sure, but it’s sadly kind of a toss up for me. Lol

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

He is no question about it. Misi and Sheppard were horrible

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Misi was not horrible. He was our most efficient LB. Jenkins played hobbled all year. Sheppard was the most feast or famine MLB I’ve ever seen. Bad, bad, good, okay, bad, really good, bad etc…

  10. Randy's avatar Randy says:

You guys think leadership is sending a guy a text? My gosh. If he sends him a bouquet of flowers, does it mean he’s a really good leader? Lol

  11. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Tim,
Yeah, I thought it was funny. You didn’t. So be it. I’ll be sure to check with you before I say something next time.

  12. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

Adam Schefter ‏@AdamSchefter 25m25 minutes ago
Bears released veteran safety Antrel Rolle, per source.

  13. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Mike, I can’t project for sure but my guess on defense at this time is…

    Base:
    LDE Williams
    LDT Suh
    RDT Phillips
    RDE Branch

    SOLB Misi
    MLB Alonso
    WOLB Jenkins

    CB Maxwell
    CB Howard
    S Jones
    S Abdul-Quddus

    Nickel:
    LDE Wake
    LDT Suh
    RDT Phillips/Mitchell
    RDE Williams

    LB Alonso
    LB Jenkins/Hewitt

    CB Maxwell
    CB Howard
    NB McCain
    S Jones
    S Abdul-Quddus

    Dime:
    LDE Wake
    LDT Suh
    RDT Williams
    RDE McCain/Moore/Jordan

    LB Alonso

    CB Maxwell
    CB Howard
    NB McCain
    DB Thomas/Lucas
    S Jones
    S Abdul-Quddus

Obviously other guys will rotate in and out as well, but that’s kind of the core I see. Lippett is not as polished as a corner as Howard is, so he backs up both Maxwell and Howard.

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

That is basically perfect especially since we are nickel a high percentage. I do not want wake out of the game too much. (I know he needs to fully heal; I am talking about after he is all better.)

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Wake is not going to be on the sidelines in the base D, sure they’ll sub him out, but he’s our starting LDE.

  14. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Tim

yeah, that’s how I would think it would be. If Wake is healthy enough, he will come in and play LE in nickel and dime packages, and Williams would move over to RE. I dig that actually.

  15. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    GDP

Sorry man, had to go get cleaned up, going out later for my sisters anniversary. I think that’s going to be the case. Better coaching is going to have to elevate our defense, because we didn’t really make substantial changes after FA, and the trade. We’re going with what we had, + X. Howard.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Dbolt says keep your eye on UDFA ILB James Burgess out of Louisville. He was real productive in college and was really good in coverage.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Could be, but we already have guys like him, in Hull and Vigil. He has a tough road to hoe.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The more competition for those LBs Hewitt, Vigil and Hull the better. There is no big investment in any of them, it’s all staying alive situations for them. They have to keep winning their spot. Then they can push the top group. We added two other LBs as well in ILB Akil Blount, FAMU and OLB Tyler Gray, Boise State. So now we have 11 LBs on the roster – 6-7 likely make it. This is an area to keep your eye on for new standouts.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Absolutely Tim. Competition always brings out either the best or worst in players, and that’s how you find who stays and who goes.

  16. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Misi was never horrible, but he has never, ever been any better than average.

  17. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

It would be great if some of the young(er) DE’s showed a little something, like McCain, Moore and D. Jordan. It’s not too late for Jordan, but the sands in the hourglass are falling fast.

  19. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I listen to Grier in the presser, and forgive me, but I wish he could do a draft by himself w/o Tannebaum being involved. I’d love to see what he could accomplish on his own.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

How is the VP of football operations not going to be involved? Grier does the leg work and Tannenbaum oversees it and then along with Gase they all talk it out. Not sure what the problem is. I really don’t.

Ross hired Tannenbaum to make sure personnel and coaches were on the page, he did not think it was last year and he didn’t like it. So look at it as a new trifecta. LOL

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I’m sure he’s behind all the wheeling and dealing. It’s played out already. I’d like to see Grier on his own. I’m just not a fan of throwing away future assets. If we don’t get that 4th RD compensatory pick, we’re kind of screwed on that one. Honestly, a new Trifecta is the fucking last thing I want to think of, I just threw up in my mouth.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

        LOL, I hear ya.

The banking on comp picks is a huge deal in 2017. We’ll see.

But this team is going to try and make the playoffs this year. They’re not in hey we’re rebuilding and we have time with the new HC, That’s not the message I hear. Ross thinks RT being in his 5th season that it’s time. Did personnel do enough to make that happen? We shall see. I see the potential but it has to happen.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

To you it’s throwing away assets, to him it’s using his assets to get the players he wants. He said he was sorry Mike E doesn’t agree with what he’s doing 😉

  20. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I can just picture Grier sitting there shaking his head, thinking WTF did I marry myself to? This guy doesn’t freaking stop!!!!!!

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

TBaum often refers to Grier. The media has also started to show respect and ask him questions instead of just focusing on TBaum. That’s what I’ve noticed anyway. It wasn’t like that in Feb/Mar.

  21. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

C’mon Steve, Mr. T is totally out of control. You know it as well as I do. There’s nothing wrong with actually drafting 8 guys when you have 8 draft picks, without using 10, 2 from next year!

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

You say it’s out of control, but that’s, because you don’t agree with it. Look at the last 10 -15 drafts we’ve had, and tell me you wouldn’t like to take one of those 2nd round picks and move up a few spots and taken someone else, like Kalil (Panthers) that was drafted one spot before we picked Satele. Tannenbaum has had success doing this, sure it doesn’t work every time, but it’s how he got Revis.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

There’s nothing wrong with making trades Mike, and many of the GMs agree with me, because there were lots of those types of trades made during this draft.

    • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

It’s reckless to trade too many future picks away. That gets you into nothing but trouble.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

You know their philosophy on the 3rd and 4th, they still have at least 7 picks next yr, one in each round, they just chose to use the extra picks in this draft. Being reckless is drafting guys, because you’re on the clock, with no plan on what you’re looking for.

  22. D's avatar D says:

Matt slauson also cut by bears. Wonder if Gase gets Tbaum to pick up the phone, see what he is asking for

  23. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

    Bears released OG Matt Slauson.
Slauson was owed just under $3 million this season. The move is surprising after Slauson finished No. 18 in Pro Football Focus’ 2015 guard ratings, with a top-ten rank in pass protection. He allowed one sack in 16 starts, and just turned 30 in February. While the Bears are moving on with second-round pick Cody Whitehair at left guard, a good guard just hit the free agent market.

I was at a friends house today for a BBQ, he made some wonderful chicken. While the food was cooking we partied, swam and carried on. Finally when it was time to eat everyone went inside to fill their plates. I watched as everyone ahead of me chose not to take the biggest, nicest looking piece of chicken, I eyed it while I portioned out my potato salad, then while I got my beans. It sat there, person after person opted for a different piece.
Inspired by my Dolphins I proudly declared, as I moved to the platter, that the piece of chicken I had dubbed “Tunsil” would be mine. I took the biggest, nicest piece – AND IT WAS AWESOME!

SB, at first it felt like Ireland but once we took “Tiny” it changed everything for me. I dig this draft. I felt like we would be surprised as the general consensus was that we’d go defense and I knew going in how terrible we were on offense in particular last year and the variety of spices they sprinkled on the O has me very optimistic once again (as usual).

If the NFL Draft taught us anything — it’s Adam Gase’s #Dolphins now http://www.palmbeachpost.com/news/sports/football/nfl-draft-gives-dolphins-coach-adam-gase-more-play/nrFhy/

  29. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

“I believe we are here to serve the coaches,” Tannenbaum said. “Obviously, those players we’ve acquired were purposeful and by design. It fits an overall scheme.”

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

It’s all BS Getter, they’re just picking guys with no idea what they’re doing, and trying to see, if they can break the record for most draft day trades, just to get the record, and once they’re done fucking up the Fins they’re going back to NY to laugh it up.

  30. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Mike, don’t you want them to win this yr? Why is it such a big deal if they move around the board to get the guys they want, instead of the guys that happen to be there when they pick? Would you rather they took BPA in the 4th that fits a 3-4 D? Seriously, we finally seem to have an FO that’s taking guys for a reason, instead of just acquiring talent, with no idea how they’re going to be used, and you’re worried about an extra 3 and 4 for next yr, why? Look at the big picture, it screams win now with system guys that look to be molded like Landry.

  31. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Steve

What makes you think they had a plan and knew which players they were going to take at each pick? It looked to me like they panicked a few times, and gave up too much. How many other GM’s traded away next years picks after the 1st RD, meaning how many GM’s made a trade using next years picks when not trading up for a player in the first round? It’s like you’re giving him the benefit of the doubt on everything. You need to be a little more skeptical. I think I have they had a solid plan, there would be absolutely no need at all to squander next year’s picks.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

No one has a plan as to who they’re going to take at each pick, that’s as ridiculous as you posting a mock draft, because you never know what’s going to happen before you pick. They put guys on their board and see what’s there when they pick, but if things happen in front of them that changes things maybe they have to go up and get a guy they really like by making a trade. I don’t know of any GMs that traded any future picks after the first, but we had extra picks to play with that they wanted to use this yr. Not sure why those 2 picks were so more valuable to you, than the alpha WR that looks to be a faster Landry?

I’m giving them the benefit of the doubt, because I see how things are unfolding, they’re filling holes with guys that actually fit the scheme for a change, that’s exciting. The OL is the best on paper it’s been in many yrs (changes can only be on paper this time of yr). You seem to be skeptical of them for the sake of being skeptical, if it was last yrs coach and GM I would’ve been skeptical of everything. Everything seems to be falling in place for Gase, so there’s no reason to feel skeptical at this point. Using picks and squandering picks are two different things. Only 3 or 4 guys from each draft class usually ever make it to being a decent contributor, so why not use the picks we have, if someone comes available that you’ve targeted, to maximize the chances that our top 3 or 4 actually make it?

  32. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

We were said to be deep at WR before the draft. I don’t know why they keep saying that, it was one of the thinnest positions on the team after the 3 starters, really just Whalen, now it’s the deepest position (in a passing league, what a concept).

RB was our biggest weakness on O, unless you consider OG the weakness, but both of those seem to be taken care of. Drafting Drake screams we won’t be a run first type of O, we’ll be more of a spread it out and let the playmakers do what they do in space. Should be fun.

CB was said to be our biggest area of weakness to start the offseason, which I agreed with, but now it seems to be settled with Howard and Maxwell brought in as scheme CBs. Anyone on here objecting to letting the small zone corner Grimes go?

LB was also a big area of need, only Alonso is really new, but the UDFAs from last yr will have a yr under their belts. I can’t see how we haven’t upgraded LB, also a healthy Misi and Jenkins should help. I think they wanted to see what this group could do, before they changed it any more. Would a 4th or later LB be any better than what’s on the team now?

The DL looks to once again be the strength of the D with, yes Wake at LDE and Mario at RDE, then Suh and Mitchell/Phillips/Jones opposite him.

I don’t think the D would’ve gotten much better this yr, by drafting guys after the 3rd, but I do think they could get better by benefit of actually having an O that can move the ball.

I don’t get why some are complaining about the offseason moves/draft, when it appears the team is night vs day better than last yrs paper thin team. If you feel the team hasn’t gotten better, why do you feel that way? Does the 3rd and 4th from 2017 really bother you? Several draft moves were made with the future in mind, like Duarte to possible replace Cameron next yr, and Caroo to replace Stills next yr, if either doesn’t get it done this yr or asks for too much next yr.

  33. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I know just about every one of you guys mocked Mr. T when he was with the Jets, and rightfully so. He fucked up! Now that he’s here, all of a sudden he walks on water. That’s fine, just realize how silly that is, but then carry on if it makes you feel better. Don’t let me ruin the charade

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

We mock everything Jests. When Chad Pennington left there and came here he was our hero, at least for one year till his shoulder mushed out. We all hated Jason Taylor for one year, but that is forgotten now that he came home and finished here.

Tannenbaum learned from his mistakes at NY, but he DID take that team to the AFC champs twice even though he had Sailor Boy Sanchez at QB. Don’t you want to go deep in the playoffs in 16 and 17?

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

We weren’t mocking him when he was moving up to take Revis or even Sanchez (he gave up squat to make that move up). He was mocked for fucking up the cap, that put the team in a whole for a few yrs. I don’t see that as a problem here, because Dawn has done a tremendous job of taking care of the cap for us.

No one has said he walks on water or even anything close, what some have said is they like the way the FO is listening to Gase and getting him the specific players that fit the schemes they’re trying to run.

When the pick was made to get Carroo I was thinking, WTF are they doing, just like I did when they traded up in the 2nd, but after seeing game tape of the players, and read about them I calmed down, because I realized why they did it.

  34. sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

I can’t believe Mike doesn’t want this team to win. Whats wrong with that guy? Lol

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I don’t really blame him, because that’s the way I felt last yr when we were 1-3. I said never again will I have faith in these guys, before they actually do it, but something changed. Gase was brought in and I finally think they’ve gotten it right.

  35. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

We needed blockers and tacklers and playmakers and mismatch nightmares, so that is what we drafted, signed, and traded for. We got rid of ordinary (the MLB), passive (Jamar), and finesse (Philbin and Lazor).

We got hitters and tacklers and maulers and scrappy kids and guys who score TDs in bunches.
I love this draft and off season FA moves.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Yet some would rather we stayed status quo, or get to the point that any little thing the team does that they don’t agree (understand) with, they bitch. Must be a sad way to root for your team.

  36. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

What if the jets had jumped in front of us and taken Tunsil, how would everyone be feeling about now? Some don’t seem to realize how fortunate we were to get him, or what he really means to the OL. I think we have a chance to have one of the best OLs in the league.

  37. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Steve

Yeah, I want to win every year, but trading away the future for today isn’t the way to accomplish that. How could the Jets have jumped in front of us? Tannenbaum is in MIA now, silly!

Nowhere have I ever said I wanted to stay status quo. Being irresponsible with draft picks does equal success in this draft. Their best pick fell in their lap, the rest they squandered picks at every turn. Great job!

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Yeah, he fell in their lap, but he also fell in the laps of 10 teams in front of us and they didn’t pull the trigger, so I have to give them credit for the pick.

I never said, you said you wanted us to stay status quo.

Why do you just assume every time they trade a pick to move up they’re squandering picks? It’s not irresponsible, the picks are like coupons, they have no cash value until they’re used, think about that.

I believe you were one of those that was complaining about giving up the 5 spots in the first, how’d that turn out 😛 I know they got lucky, and every time they trade away a pick they’re irresponsible, I get the MO.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I didn’t complain about that trade. At first it was reported that we gave up an additional pick, but it was later found out that was incorrect. I was just happy we didn’t give up an additional pick.

  38. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Tannenbaum learned from his mistakes? What exactly about this draft makes you say that? It’s not only about getting good draft picks, it’s about getting them with the right value. I maintain all the wheeling and dealing they did in this draft was haphazard and irresponsible, and you’ll feel it next year, especially if we don’t get the compensatory picks he’s expecting to get.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

OMG value? You want a value GM lets bring back Ireland. I want someone that sees a player he likes and has the balls to pull the trigger.

How do you know they haven’t already been unofficially told they’re getting those picks? Not that they need to be told, they know how to figure it out roughly, and most likely why they didn’t include the comp 3rd.

Okay, let’s try this again. Here’s the corrected full list of average #RAS per draft class. Ignore my previous.

  40. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Steve

What if we still suck this year? What if Alonso is no better than Sheppard, Misi is still Misi, meaning he’s OK for a few games and then gets hurt? Who knows if Tunsil can play G any better than Dallas Thomas? Jenkins I believe will be better than last season if healthy, and there’s no reason not to believe he will be. What if Howard is toasted more than Jamar (traded to move up 2 spots in the 7th RD) Taylor? I know, Lippett will save the season, right?

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

What if? That’s what you got? What if we pull a 2000 Rams, since we’re on the subject. What if we’re supposed to be fans and do what fans do, because they enjoy doing it. I don’t want to go to sleep thinking how shitty they’re going to be, if you do and you like it fine, but I don’t.

  41. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Lou – What’s #RAS?

    • I think it has to do with doing mathematical calculations on the athletic ability of the players picked in the draft by each team while your dick is stuck up your boyfriend’s ass. best I can come up with.

    • not your dick, btw. the person who did the calcs

    • and I said something about it on Twitter and he replies about his chart like I GAF. probably the same Harvard douchebag that mathematically calculated Phins having best chance of winning the SB this past season.

You supplied the link to what it means. There’s 10 categories, the first example they used was the 40, so at each position there’s an average 40 time if your draftee scored a 5 he was average. Like a WR running a 4.5 is below average so he’d get a score like 4.52 (below the average 5). For a TE that same 4.5 is above average… and they do this for other drills they did at the combine.

I agree it’s fuckin stupid, like they’re running in a track meet instead of playing football.

  42. Mike,
I don’t actually know what #RAS stands for but according to the guy that came up with the calculations to do the chart, you know, the nerd from Harvard who’s beating off to Martha Stewart magazine’s the chart is an indication of the athletic ability of all the players taken by each team. According to Kent Lee, Tunsil wasn’t included in the Phins number because he didn’t have enough numbers to use on him or some shit like that. So, according to the “Real Professor” our team just drafted some of the least athletic guys of any of the teams.

  43. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

It was reported that the jets tried to trade up to take Tunsil, but it was too expensive and they decided to stay where they were.

Ireland traded up to get DT3? Was that a great pick? He also traded up to get DFF. Trading up to get someone you have conviction for doesn’t make it a good trade, nor the right pick.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

So because Ireland did it and it didn’t work that’s it, and anyone else that trades up has to have a failed pick. Ok, I see why you say the things you do, with that logic I’m going to give you an acronym and I want you to come up with your own RAS. Use WTF 😉

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

No, but you’re implying because they traded up and got the players they wanted, that they did a great job. We don’t know that, and in getting the guys they wanted, they gave up our 4th RD pick this year, and our 3rd and 4th RD picks next year.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

What I’m implying is, because they are targeting scheme fit players, and it’s someone they really want it’s better than taking someone else that’s lower on their board. You’ve got 5 players rated wouldn’t you rather have your top rated player instead of your 2nd or 3rd?

  47. D's avatar D says:

Who were they trying to trade with?

  48. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Steve

Trying to explain exactly how I feel is pretty complicated on a blog. I’m happy with the guys we got, just not happy how we got them. That’s the simplest explanation I can give you. I’m also tired of giving Mr. T the benefit of the doubt when he hardly deserves. Even if he got every guy he wanted, he did so with abandon, and was all over the place. We’ll never know whether he had to or not, and honestly, I don’t want to know, because I’d bet he didn’t.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Not only that, but you know I want us to win more than anything. Saying otherwise because I don’t agree with the way we handled the draft isn’t fair. I praise them when I think they deserve it, and I make it know when i think they didn’t. That’s what fans are supposed to. Not just fall in line with whatever they do. That’s not how i work.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Of course he didn’t, no one was taking Howard before we picked, but that one was rumored to be for Myles Jack, but the Jags pulled the carpet out from under us. They had Carroo pegged as the 2nd WR on their board and didn’t think he make it to them. They weren’t willing to risk losing him, so they traded up. It’s as simple as that, they knew the risk vs reward and they made the decision. It’s not a right verses wrong its a hedging of your bet.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Forgive my ignorance, but don’t you trade up for the pick that is live, not the pick behind it, because you never know what the team who picks live is going to do. I think that’s a rumor, and unfounded.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Not always the case, I thought we traded back with the cheats before the pick. Doesn’t matter anyways, see the part about not willing to risk losing…

      • According to everything I read on the move up to get Howard the Bears were looking to take him and that’s why we moved up.

  49. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Mike, you still didn’t answer the question about how important those picks after the 3rd round are to you, by comparing the players we’ve drafted good vs not so good (after the 3rd).

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

We’ll find out the importance next year, when we see the players that we can’t get because we don’t have them anymore.

  50. One of the problems with the chart is it’s the cumulative total of all players selected by each team and Doughty’s 40 time and other measurables pulled him way down and pulled the entire group down. So, it’s not taken on a player by player basis.
Another problem, of course, is when you have a statistic that’s supposed to be “useful”, which this is not, you can’t exclude a player from the calculation as he did with Tunsil because, and he even says, Tunsil was trending towards elite but he didn’t have all the numbers to work with. So, a statistic is only as good as the data used to arrive at the conclusion and, in this case, the data sucks.
and, another problem is, like Steve says above, a player like Landry would have had a low score because he didn’t “test” well. It’s all numbers. When you look at it at face value it’s saying Dallas, Eagles and Jets all did better than we did at picking players when, in fact, the Cowboys didn’t have a great draft and neither did the Eagles or the Jets. so, as far as that chart goes it should probably be printed on a roll of toilet paper so you can wipe your ass with it.

  51. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Steve

I don’t ever recall a team trading to a pick in a round that wasn’t live. That seems like an exercise in futility. Shame on them if that’s what they did, they deserved to miss out on the player they wanted. Seriously, I can’t think of any instance like that.

  52. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Lou

I’d believe that waaaaaaay before we traded to the vicinity of the beginning of a round to try and get a player. No team does that.

  53. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

OK, this discussion is tiring me. Goodnight guys!

  54. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Mike, here’s a real RAS for you to do that has meaning. Do the math for all players drafted in each round, and come up with % a player has of making the pro bowl, and one for starts in his first 4 years. The rounds would be broken into first 10 picks, 2nd 10, and last 12. What you’re trying to accomplish is what the risk is of trading up.

  55. jetsssuck's avatar jetsssuck says:

Steve very good explanation of how to use statistics. I wish I could have thought of this way to use them in college to make statistics more interesting. I hated statistics because we were not allowed to use computers which made everything harder. You can use statistics for lots of analysis including decision analysis with different probabilities of a outcome. This fascinated me during college but I never pursued it any further after graduating. My wife says most corporate companies have software and all one has to do is plug in the numbers.

During my kids growing up period I always thought of using statistics to determine the probability of my kids lying to me but the software and my laziness to take the time to develop a mathematical hypothesis was not worth the time. I suppose most sport teams use them all the time.

Sidenote: He is abysmal as a pass protector, showing such horrific technique that it makes me believe he really hasn’t been coached up on it, as he was rarely asked to fill a blocking role at Alabama.

One last thing to mention on Drake: he was repeatedly in the doghouse at Alabama, and not just for fumbling concerns. in 2012Kenyan Drake he was suspended for an unnamed violation of team rules, and the next year was left off the Tide’s travel roster in the season opener at Virginia Tech for a similar offense. Drake didn’t play one snap in Alabama’s Sugar Bowl loss to Oklahoma that season, and there was plenty of speculation that the talented back would transfer. To Drake’s credit he stuck it out, but he was arrested a few months later for obstructing a government operation (not as exciting as it sounds). The charge occurred because Drake refused to obey police officers’ orders not to retrieve his vehicle because it was roped off in a crime scene area. Not an overly concerning offense, but on top of previous infractions, the arrest did little to help Drake’s image. The past two seasons have seemed less contentious, but Drake’s character will be monitored and observed closely by NFL teams during the pre-draft process.

Thanks for the update jestsuck.I wonder if that was a doghouse that Drake was running out of for 95 yards down the sideline essentially sealing the championship win? Hmm, maybe it was his own 5 yard line and he ended up in a doghouse?
Nope I think he ended up in the endzone with exhausted Tigers trailing behind in his wake. 🙂

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

We’ll have to see. I’m pretty sure they checked his past, and know what they’re getting into. It’s not like he’s a featured back, which is one reason Gases likes a stable of backs. You typically don’t have to pay much for platoon players either.

Besides Tunsil and Howard everyone else was taken to play a role, not to start this year. They’ve added lots of depth to a thin 2015 squad.

I really don’t get the fuss over minor issues/concerns. Yes Mike…

  59. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I’ll say this, if we finally get the OL solidified and playing well, they don’t need to be great or the best, but respectable and solid, there is no reason we shouldn’t score more points on a regular basis with the weapons we have. We averaged 24.0 in 2014 only to take a step back in 2015 with 19.4. I’d like to see us get to 25+.

    • sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

      I’d say 26.2

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

    • BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

No matter how good the oline is tanny has to get rid of the ball faster. That means designing plays that allow for that.Manning and Brady don’t get sacked often because the ball is out in less that 2.5 seconds. If our offense can do that then we’ll score more points IMO.

  60. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

26.2 is outrageous!!! No way we score more than 25.8, no way.

  61. Ken's avatar Ken says:

A 10.3 ppg jump is a huge jump and unlikely

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

10.3? We’re talking like a 5 point jump which everyone said we couldn’t do from 2013 to 2014 and we did.

  62. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

We allowed 24.3 PPG last year and that’s not always just on defense but turnovers for TDs and STs TDs. I don’t remember off hand how many we had. But that has to get down to about 20.0 at the least.

  63. Ken's avatar Ken says:

If we could get between 23-24 ppg we should be much better.

  64. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Steve

If we win the SB this year, yeah, trading away picks next year probably won’t matter. You think we’re winning the SB this season? You think we make the playoffs?

  65. Ken's avatar Ken says:

    Tim:
I must be dislexic I thought our ppg was 15.9 but it is 19.5

  66. sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

26.2 is on a bunch of bumper stickers of overachievers so maybe that might be out of reach.

  67. Ken's avatar Ken says:

26.2 would still be a huge jump of almost 7 points. I think 5 ppg increase would be great especially if we can lower our ppa by 1-2.

  68. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Are we going to keep going on and on about how we got our picks? It’s a done deal, can we just go from here. I think enough has been said about it. That’s all I saw all weekend instead of focusing on the actual players we added. Not telling anyone what to talk about, but what does it accomplish because it’s done? To add an extra 3rd this year you have to give up something to get it. Trading a 3rd and 4th in 2017 will have nothing to do with the team this season other than the player we added in Carrooooooooooo…

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I’d prefer not to. You all know I didn’t agree with the way they handled the draft, but I am happy with the players we have. We’ll deal with next year next year.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

That’s what I’m saying. Cool! It’s just that it’s been said so many times for two days that I think everyone is on record about it one way or the other.

Outside of Tunsil being the logical choice, who’s your favorite player we landed?

  69. Ken's avatar Ken says:

There is no real point in dissecting the draft anymore. There are picks and moves I liked and didn’t like but now what matters is how these guys do on the field and that will take time to see what happens so as to see how we really did.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Howard because to play the press scheme we want to play, we needed another guy with that ability. I know he got burned a bunch and all that, but he’s also a ballhawk, very physical and a good tackler. They’ll coach him up to clean up some things and it may take some time – Madison and Surtain didn’t start right away, I think Howard will because we don’t really have anyone else to challenge him unless LIppett really emerges or our 7th rd pick Lucas surprises.

    Good morning humans

    Hope everyone enjoyed the draft

So in reflection I think it was a draft of misses for me

First of all I really expected the Dolphins to focus on defense
But nope – this was a draft to get the offense to be the offense Gase wants to run

Then I missed on a lot of prospects as well
3 of the prospects Wrdge profiled went I drafted
Jeremy Cash, Shawn Oakman and Eric Striker
I’m a little surprised at Cash but not no much oakman and striker

2 other prospects were barely made it and were drafted in the 7th
    Scooby and Tyler Marakevich
I am a bit surprised about Matakevich but not Scooby so much

Worst of all – I profiled Carl Lawson Jr who didn’t even come out of school

So wedge had a lot of misses
    Those aren’t great results

It seemed like a lot of players I profiles went in the 2nd round
And that I tend to value day 2 picks – so that is the norm
1 surprised me by getting in the 1st – keanu Neal

    So
    It’s kind of a low %
But don’t make a big deal about it if you value the survival of the earth

I kinda like the Duarte pick in the 7th round

Its not easy to get value so late in the draft

but you can see this guy finidng his way on the final 53 and catching some passes this season

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Yeah he can run and was very productive. I think he’s like Dallas Clark type TE, not really a prototype TE, more of a spread TE. Not saying he’s on Clark’s level either. But you never know, Shannon Sharpe was a 7th rd pick.

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

        He kinda replaces Clay IMO

  92. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

most of our picks might be able to have an impact this year

Tunsil is obvious and he will start at OG
Howard is probably a day 1 starter
    Drake with get some carries
Caroooooooo seems to be ready to work his way up t he WR depth chart
Tiny Grant may be returning kicks and maybe get a few offensive snaps
Duarte may be a redzone asset and help create mismatches

I don’t expect much from Lucas or Doughty this season
They may even be on the PS

    • New Age's avatar New Age says:

Yeah, that is one thing I like about this draft. First two are starters but most of them will have the ability to be used as playmakers, if they learn fast enough. It’s nice to see guys like Grant who will specialize in making our STs great. I’ve always liked Sproles and it’s good to get a hopefully similar player in Drake early in the cycle instead of late. Someone will have to plan against our offense again! yay!

    http://www.ktvz.com/sports/2016-nfl-draft-best-and-worst-picks-of-day-two/39295684

Three worst draft picks from Day Two:

    1. Tampa Buccaneers – Roberto Aguayo, PK, Florida State (59th)

When I mocked Aguayo to Tampa in the third round of my seven-round mock draft, I heard it from Buccaneers fans who told me it was a ridiculous pick and I was wrong. Those fans were right – I was wrong because Tampa drafted him in the second round, not the third.

While I do understand the pick because there was no guarantee that Aguayo would make it to Tampa in the third round, moving up to draft a kicker in round two is one of my least favorite picks from Day Two. Aguayo is a consistent kicker and helps fill a critical need area for the Buccaneers, but the second round?

    2. Miami Dolphins – Kenyan Drake, RB, Alabama (73rd)

The third running back off the board wasn’t Kenneth Dixon, Devontae Booker or C.J. Prosise, it was Drake. There are certainly qualities to like with the former Alabama running back, including start/stop athleticism and shifty feet. However, the negatives are tough to ignore and make it a curious pick in the top 75.

Drake had the highest fumble rate of all the running backs in this class and lacks the size or power to be a consistent between-the-tackles runner. He is basically a wide receiver, but unless the quarterback throws the ball at his numbers, Drake has a tough time completing catches. He is best suited for a Theo Riddick role and can be an effective cog in an offense, but he was drafted much earlier than expected.

Now the kicker is reunited with J. Winston. Tampa got a future hall of famer in the SECOND ROUND. The two used to play horse in-pre-games and pre-practice. one would use his arm against the other with his foot. It has been said kicker won 60 percent of time. Winston has never denied it, so maybe its true. The time I saw him in HS he was hitting the goal line pylons 30-40%.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

      I wanted Dixon

when you look at what they are trying to do as a whole the Drake picks makes sense

I think they are trying to surround their talent at the skill positions with mismatch types like Drake, Caroo, Grant and Huarte
these are guys that can come in and play some snaps – not really a lot of snaps (except Caroo who might be the #3 WR)
These are guys that can make big plays for us

Drake will not be splitting carries with Ajayi
      Ajayi probabably the feature back

We might pick up some competition at RB before the season starts
a bigger back in case there is an injury

The third running back off the board wasn’t Kenneth Dixon, Devontae Booker or C.J. Prosise which I would have taken.I think the fins are going to continue looking for a big RB who can run between the tackles. They have shown during the off-season to be looking for such with the players they have targeted. Maybe with the addition of Tinsel we can get someone willing to play for us.

after we gave up our 4th t get Howard, it was pretty clear we would take a RB with the 3rd round pick

So it doesn’t really matter that we could have had Drake in the 4th (maybe even 5th)
it matters that he was the back we wanted rather then the highest rated back

Duarte is of Mexican and Japanese heritage, not too common in the NFL.
