Stipulation

Call it whatever you’d like but I have to make a stipulation or correction. In my zest to kiss these rookies ass and to also welcome the vets who were brought in I referred to, in my previous post, our recent year’s Free Agency periods as “making a splash” and while true in most cases this simply cannot, nor will it be tolerated, include the signing of Ndamukong Suh. Bringing Suh to Miami was genius and will pay off in spades. Suh is a special talent. Suh is the bedrock of this team, the biggest meanest sumbitch in the league. khaled-holmes-ndamukong-suh-nfl-indianapolis-colts-miami-dolphins-590x900

Suh didn’t show up to voluntary camp, what a bad teammate, blah, blah, blah … wee wee wee

I don’t need Suh to be some in your face inspirational leader, who does snake dances and leads cheers. I just want the meanest, nastiest Defensive Tackle to show up on Sunday and inflict pain.

I don’t care if Suh only shows up on 16 Sunday’s (even though a gratis Friday walk thru would be nice, but whatever…) if whatever makes him so pissed off to have to leave where he is that he brings that anger on Sunday.usatsi_8760889_168381093_lowres

Is the 4-3 alright for you?

We can play something else if you want?

That kind of talent, don’t kid yourself.

So yes there is a Stipulation. You better believe it.

cain

If you are Herman Cain then it’s “stip-a-lation”, no matter,  I love Herman.

Alright Suh didn’t catapult the Fins into the playoffs last year and the  Defense as a whole had it’s problems but I’m going to do with Suh what the Tannehill crowd does with him. I blame coaching and scheme, I blame lack of direction and stubbornness to adhere to a dismal plan. I expect Coach Gase and his staff to truly understand the player they have and to use him to their fullest advantage. Let the beast feed – feed the beast.

If I were the coaching staff I would intentionally piss Suh off every game day. Move his locker to a different spot every week. Don’t have his uniform ready and waiting for him. Perhaps a wet-willy, maybe a pink belly, noogie, tie his shoelaces together or the old hot foot.

hokum2bsmokum2b6

Whatever it takes to get him to his utmost pissed-offness.

ndamukong-suh-650

Suh is here, and so is a new coaching staff, everything is different now!!!

I don’t think the large donors are putting their money into presidential race but are now putting money into senate and house races now.Large donors know presidential race is a lost cause. The big money guys are now worried losing both houses to democrats. One house is up for graps with 10 seats in question and the other within striking distance. Hillary appointing 3 SCOTUS could change the political landscape of America for a generation maybe 2.

    ———
Chop blocks (involving 2 offensive players hitting a defensive player simultaneously) were always illegal on pass plays. What the NFL did is remove the 2-3 different scenarios where ‘chop’ blocks were ignored (inside run plays; plays outside the TE).

Cut blocks (going low on a defensive player) are still legal

not if you are getting the right candidate who believes in what you do. Having a large financial interest in could amount to millions lost or gained to somecandidates. Same holds true for political donors who have cases before SCOTUS with 1 member short of a full supreme court. I believe we have already seen where one case was dropped because congress isn’t allowing a nomination. That company dropped the case and paid 500-600 million I believe. 3 possible nominations could happen with this presidential election winner.

Cromartie, most recently a cornerback with the New York Jets but currently a free agent, is well known for the number of children he has fathered. ———————————-

    What went wrong

They mysteriously swapped picks with Philadelphia to acquire a terrible contract. To what must have been bemused delight in Philly, the Dolphins sent the eighth pick to the Eagles for the 13th selection and two veterans, Kiko Alonso and Byron Maxwell, who failed to launch during their lone season in Pennsylvania. Alonso is basically a low-cost flier.

Maxwell, though, is another story. He was a disastrous signing from Seattle; the Eagles must have been itching to give away one of former coach Chip Kelly’s personnel mistakes and get out from under the $13.5 million in guaranteed money remaining on Maxwell’s deal…..Maxwell was a mess in that same role for the Eagles…..

They renounced Olivier Vernon’s transition tag to sign Mario Williams…The Fins weren’t necessarily wrong to pass on re-signing Vernon at the staggering sum he received from the Giants, but….Vernon for Williams is a downgrade.

They traded up repeatedly in the draft. They sent a fourth-round pick to the Ravens to move up five spots in the second round and grab cornerback Xavien Howard before sending third- and fourth-rounders in next year’s draft to Minnesota to select Leonte Carroo in the third round. Then they made one of the rare trade-down moves that got a negative return, sending the 147th pick to the Patriots for Nos. 196, 204 and 250. The Patriots then sent that selection and the 243th pick to the Seahawks for pick 225 and a 2017 fourth-rounder, a deal the Dolphins would have been better off taking themselves.

They re-signed Cameron Wake. At 34 and coming off of a torn Achilles, there’s a legitimate chance that Wake won’t regain his form as one of the better pass-rushers in all of football. The Dolphins had Wake signed for one more year with a cap hit of $9.8 million, but over the weekend, they re-signed him to a two-year extension with $10 million in new, fully guaranteed money.

Before agreeing to this deal, there was a chance that a monster season from Wake would have forced the Dolphins to spend the franchise tag on him in 2017. But the chances are greater that the Dolphins paid for the player they’re hoping Wake still is instead of the guy who shows up this upcoming season.

      ———————————

Mike Tannenbaum stated Miami will employ a 4-3 “under” defensive front in 2016. This designation was a key tidbit of information to work off, as it’s easier to project where talent will fit and what skill sets will be required at each position.

The biggest differences between a 4-3 under and a regular set are the two space-eating defensive linemen on the strong side of the formation and the imbalanced linebacker alignment. This is meant to maximize the gaps for linebackers to utilize and unleash the weak-side pass-rushers.

To answer your question from yesterday concerning holes on the team

You don’t seem to understand the context in response to OD who stated that he doesn’t think the team prioritized OL

If we don’t draft Howard with the 2nd or Drake with the 3rd and instead go OL, which I assume OD wants, then we have 2 very glaring holes

In terms of the rest of the team you are far more optimistic than me.
I think we could have used LBs, DEs, and DBs
If nothing more than for depth

The team can use a lot of upgrades
    Really any team can

I have concerns about the roster

I have concerns about the entire team bc I haven’t seen them play – but on offense, the roster (what I imagine it to be) looks pretty good and like a team that can put up a lot of points

on defense though….I see the pieces I like. I see the plan and the steps they took to get big CBs. But I’m uneasy about it

I would have liked it if the team brought in more talent on D and focused on building a great defense. I think with this roster we don’t have a chance of being a top 5 defense

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

You don’t have to be top 5 in defense to have a good season. If you score on offense and play some opportunistic defense, you can win.

    Yeah Tim
    but we made a choice
we made that choice when we hired Gase

I just thought focusing on Defense would have been safer

Maxwell was actually really bad in Philadelphia

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

No he was not, he had a rough start and a couple of bad games at the end before getting hurt that is all anyone remembers, but he had an 11 game stretch where he was shutdown and gave up very little and 0 TDs. Of course dumb Eagles fans forgot that. LOL

  42. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Stanger, we first need to see Jordan back and see where he fits in. Could he be a hybrid DE/OLB? That’s what I would do with him. But I’d have him attacking the backfield more often than not. Sure drop him in coverage at times but his skill set says edge guy more so than a space player. He could play the same role as Bruce Irvin did in Seattle – OLB/edge rusher.

    LOL @ ESPN’s Bill Barnwell.
He’s another classic idiot when it comes to financial value on contracts; complaining about the overall contract value instead of the guaranteed portion and in this case, what the Dolphins were going to pay for Maxwell. Maxwell got a 6yr, 63 mill contract last year from Philly with only 25 mill of it guaranteed. The Dolphins are only on the hook for 11.5 mill in guarantees (Philly paid out 23.5 already of those 25 mill guaranteed on the original deal). The Fins re-adjusted the cap values to fit their own cap table layout. Grimes took less in TB but the Fins wanted a different skill set at the position that Grimes didn’t have not to mention that Maxwell is 4 years younger which carries a higher premium in longer term deals than guys in their 30s who are deemed too risky to sign long term. He’s crapping on Williams when reality shows Williams worst year (in sack totals) is Vernon’s 2nd best year ever in his career.

    • Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

      13.5 philly paid that is.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

If we are not over the cap or anywhere near the cap it doesn’t matter anyway

WTF does Bill think we are going to do with the money we spent on Maxwell instead, buy the stadium ice cream?

If the Dolphins were in salary cap hell – it makes sense

The point about Philadelphia wanted to unload the contract is valid
but when you sit at 13 and get one of the best players in the draft, its moot

Williams is far superior to Vernon and I thik we will see that on the field
I don’t even think its close

      Like Daniel Ellerbee…

and that worked out so well for us

I think we all know who the top talent is
      its not a secret
If we had a shot to bring in a young safety via the draft to groom to replace him – I think we need to take that

but I think our focus was elsewhere – which is just a choice we made

LOL Piggy – Looks like she fell on a plate

  50. Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

Or another way of looking at Isa is that he’s on his 3rd team in 5 years and entering his 6th NFL season (UDFA from Saints cut by Saints after 3 years; claimed by Lions where he was working off a 1 year deal last season).

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I like Branch too. I think he can fill the Shelby void

but Maxwell, Alonso and Isa are guys other teams were willing to part ways with
Its hard to build a great defense with those guys

Of course guys floating from team to team doesn’t always mean failure
Sometimes guys find themselves and hopping around

According to Pro Football Focus, from Weeks 3 to 13, the fifth-year corner was targeted 45 times in coverage, allowing 28 completions for 365 yards – a meager 8.1 average per attempt – and zero touchdowns. That works out to 45 yards per game, minus Week 4 against Washington, when he exited early with an injury. Yards per catch were kept to a minimum as well at just 92 total, and he only surrendered one reception over 23 yards during that span.”

      1. Isa Abdul-Quddus, SS (Lions)

Nothing has come easy for Isa Abdul-Quddus in his NFL career. After entering the league as an undrafted free agent in 2011, Abdul-Quddus developed into a serviceable backup for the New Orleans Saints in his first couple of years. It wasn’t until 2015 that he was afforded an extended run as a starter in Detroit, and he responded with an impressive sequence of performances. Abdul-Quddus bounced back from a terrible game against the Bears in Week 6 by finishing with a +9.4 cumulative grade in his last eight games. Ultimately, he finished the year with an 80.1 grade, ranking 19th amongst safeties. Abdul-Quddus was particularly effective against the run, recording a stop percentage in the top 20, as well as positive grades in coverage and as a pass-rusher. Considering his experience both at centerfield and in the box, Abdul-Quddus is one of the more intriguing options in this stacked crop of free agents safeties.

    THIS JUST IN!!
The Dolphins defensive line and the secondary have attracted a lot of attention this offseason, albeit for different reasons.

The big news up front has been the arrival of four-time Pro Bowl selection Mario Williams to join a group already featuring two other four-time Pro Bowlers, Cameron Wake and Ndamukong Suh. On top of that, Wake continues his recovery from his 2015 Achilles injury and now has a new contract extension.

In the secondary, the story has been the arrival of safety Isa Abdul-Quddus as a free agent and then the two draft picks on the defensive of the ball, cornerbacks Xavien Howard and Jordan Lucas.

Relatively speaking, things have been fairly quiet at linebacker expect for the offseason arrival of Kiko Alonso in the March trade with the Philadelphia Eagles that also brought cornerback Byron Maxwell.

From defensive coordinator Vance Joseph’s perspective, the linebackers have a chance to make plenty of headlines of their own once the regular season starts.

With Alonso and returning starters Jelani and Koa, Joseph said the Dolphins have playmaking ability at the position.

“Between Kiko, Jelani and Koa, that’s three pretty good athletes,” Joseph said. “That’s more scheme than it is a personal gift. We have to move those guys around and we have to blitz those guys and allow them to make negative plays.”

What would go a long way toward helping the Dolphins linebacker corps becoming an impact group is if Alonso can regain the form he displayed in 2013 with the Buffalo Bills when he earned NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year honors from the Professional Football Writers Association.

Alonso dealt with various injuries the past two seasons, but Joseph said he liked what he saw from the linebacker when the Dolphins hit the practice field during their recent voluntary veteran minicamp and during the early portions of the offseason program.

“Last year’s film was tough,” Joseph said. “It was a different scheme. They were in a 3-4 defense. But what I’ve seen — in our minicamp, the last couple of weeks — is he has got great instincts. He’s a long, tall, Mike (middle) backer that has great instincts. He covers a bunch of ground with his movement. He has great eyes. He has been a great leader in the huddle, and that has been surprising. He has been very vocal. He has been assertive in the huddle. That was good to see from him.”

However, he knows that if he runs the right scheme on defense, & gets what he wants upfront from the DL, then everything else will fall into place for both LB’s to shoot the gaps on blitzes or stuffing run plays, to the LB’s being able to concentrate on coverage knowing the DL has sealed the run lanes, as well as making the job of the DB’s easier with quick penetration by the DL.

We have talent, just needed good coaching to put it together in a workable fashion that makes sense for everybody on the field.

Also let’s not forget that Alonso was traded for twice, not cut or released. He was involved in the LeSean McCoy trade and our trade. He was targeted, not thrown away.
    ————
    Agreed.

Alonso didn’t come cheap to the Eagles either; they traded McCoy who was considered one of the most complete backs in the NFL stuck on a team where its head coach liked to put everyone on a rotation.

Alonso was traded from Buffalo due to i) position of need for a new head coach (RB) ii) a surplus of LB that Buffalo had accumulated through good drafts iii) Kiko was going to be moved to WLB in his 2nd YR in Buffalo but he was hurt before camp even started iiii) his injury class (blown knee).
Alonso was traded to Miami due to i) GM wanted to discard all of Chip Kelly’s moves because he was bitter at Chip; wanted to start with his own personnel ii) Alonso suffered another leg injury (this time an MCL grade 2 sprain which is a partial tear of the MCL and considered a rare injury).

Maxwell was aquired by Philly in a deal that Seattle simply could not match financially and he was discarded by Philly due to i) Maxwell’s production did not match his price ii) GM wanted to discard all of Chip Kelly’s moves because he was bitter at Chip’ wanted to start with his own personnel.

Miami acquired Kiko because they felt his knee injury in Philadelphia was not directly related to the first one and that the Fins sports science department could keep him healthy going forward (something Riley has typically done with the Miami Heat when acquiring often injured players) and also because he was highly productive in his rookie year as a 4-3 MLB. The Fins also believed his production in November and early December was a result of missing part of Week 2 through the entire Week 8. Fins are also aware that Kiko finished off the Eagles season last year on a high note recording 8 combined tackles (season best at that time) vs Wash and 9 combined tackles vs Giants (Kiko’s season best) his last two games of the year.

Regarding Maxwell, the Fins acquired him at a price of 11.5 mill (the guaranteed $ amount remaining on his contract after the 13.5 Philly paid out in YR 1 of the deal). The Fins split their payment into 8.5 in this year and 3 next year (only 3 mill of Maxwell’s $8.5 mill 2017 cap figure is guaranteed). The Fins also believe he was not a scheme fit in Philadelphia but will be in Miami’s new press corner scheme.

Not necessarily but his contract currently ranks 12th at the FS position on a guaranteed $ amount (11th on a per year average $ value). I’m sure he will go further down the list when 1st contract guys become FA after this upcoming season and with a rising NFL salary cap.

For perspective. everyone in the current top 5 FS position is getting 17 mill or more in guaranteed $ (MCourty #1 with 28.5 mill).

    6 and 7 are over 12 mill; 8-10 are above 8 mill.

This new way of doing rookie camp meant we did not hold tryouts for “walk-ons” this year. Is that ok? I think so. We are jammed full of good players at most every position. Cutting down the roster will be even more difficult than usual.

  76. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Also, “losing” the practice time on the field is a bit of a misnomer, since we are allowed an extra practice this year due to having a new HC.

So it was astute to use the extra practice for mental preps instead of just yet another “run around in shorts” team workout, since there are rules against contact and even 11-on-11 drills right?

People always say, “… Not that you can tell much when all they are doing is running around in shorts!”

With a new HC, DC, and OC and multiple new coaches as well as some hold-over coaches who must relearn nomenclature, schemes, etc., classroom work is a higher priority than “shorts” work.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

The coaches didn’t have a clue last yr, they didn’t know how to get him man on man. If the D sucks this yr, then I’ll agree with you it was a bad signing. It does no good to have Suh occupying several blockers and the LBs making tackles 10 yrds downfield on a running play.

and i am with you there, the whole organization sucked last year. but i dont hold out much hope suh or anything will be different this year. i bought into offseason hype 20 years ago, but now i just expect them to suck

  92. I wish ppl would make up their minds. Did the coaching and offensive scheme suck or didn’t it? Ppl keep saying that but then they say things to support their argument about Tannehill like he threw for over 4,200 yds and completed 62% of his passes and, by the way, did you forget he was top ten in long ball accuracy too at 43%? Then you point out things like the fact that he completed 48% of his passes from 11-20 yds and that’s got to be better in order to move the ball consistently and ppl say “well, with the shit o-line he had he didn’t have the time to make those throws and he was constantly under pressure”.
But, you just told me he completed 20 of 50 passes beyond 20 yds which means he had to have time to make THOSE throws and you’re telling me he was top 10 in the league completing 43% of those long ball throws BUT he didn’t have the time to make the throws from 11-20 yds.
So, the coaching and offensive scheme sucked but Tannehill was able to overcome that horrible coaching and offensive scheme to put up those numbers; the coaches had NOTHING to do with his development over the past 4 yrs. He did it all on his own. And, he had the pass protection to complete the long passes but not the shorter ones. Interesting.

Last year was the only year he failed to improve, factor in all that went wrong with the team, how can you put it all on Tannehill? The persons who should get blamed have been fired. • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

    8 Most vulnerable division winners:

    5) New England Patriots
Biggest threat in the AFC East: Buffalo Bills

The Patriots’ spot here is based almost entirely on the four-game suspension Tom Brady is expected to serve to start the season — if not for that, they’d definitely be No. 8 on this list. They do catch a break in that three of their first four games are at home, though they have to go to Arizona to open the season. Dion Lewis (who went on injured reserve in early November) should be back, while Martellus Bennett was added to an aerial attack that already included premier tight end Rob Gronkowski and receiver Julian Edelman. Also, the team brought back retired offensive line coach Dante Scarnecchia to fix a troublesome unit that was bedeviled by injuries in 2015. Backup quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo simply hasn’t played very much, making him hard to evaluate — meaning there will be a relative wild card under center for the first quarter of the season.

This is another division that made improvements from top to bottom, with three potential challengers to the Pats. The Bills did a lot to help themselves, extending left tackle Cordy Glenn and coming away with an impressive draft haul. Still, Brady or no, it’s not wise to bet against Bill Belichick, who simply finds ways to win. I expect New England to ultimately capture its eighth consecutive division title.
