Stipulation

Call it whatever you’d like but I have to make a stipulation or correction. In my zest to kiss these rookies ass and to also welcome the vets who were brought in I referred to, in my previous post, our recent year’s Free Agency periods as “making a splash” and while true in most cases this simply cannot, nor will it be tolerated, include the signing of Ndamukong Suh. Bringing Suh to Miami was genius and will pay off in spades. Suh is a special talent. Suh is the bedrock of this team, the biggest meanest sumbitch in the league. khaled-holmes-ndamukong-suh-nfl-indianapolis-colts-miami-dolphins-590x900

Suh didn’t show up to voluntary camp, what a bad teammate, blah, blah, blah … wee wee wee

I don’t need Suh to be some in your face inspirational leader, who does snake dances and leads cheers. I just want the meanest, nastiest Defensive Tackle to show up on Sunday and inflict pain.

I don’t care if Suh only shows up on 16 Sunday’s (even though a gratis Friday walk thru would be nice, but whatever…) if whatever makes him so pissed off to have to leave where he is that he brings that anger on Sunday.usatsi_8760889_168381093_lowres

Is the 4-3 alright for you?

We can play something else if you want?

That kind of talent, don’t kid yourself.

So yes there is a Stipulation. You better believe it.

cain

If you are Herman Cain then it’s “stip-a-lation”, no matter,  I love Herman.

Alright Suh didn’t catapult the Fins into the playoffs last year and the  Defense as a whole had it’s problems but I’m going to do with Suh what the Tannehill crowd does with him. I blame coaching and scheme, I blame lack of direction and stubbornness to adhere to a dismal plan. I expect Coach Gase and his staff to truly understand the player they have and to use him to their fullest advantage. Let the beast feed – feed the beast.

If I were the coaching staff I would intentionally piss Suh off every game day. Move his locker to a different spot every week. Don’t have his uniform ready and waiting for him. Perhaps a wet-willy, maybe a pink belly, noogie, tie his shoelaces together or the old hot foot.

hokum2bsmokum2b6

Whatever it takes to get him to his utmost pissed-offness.

ndamukong-suh-650

Suh is here, and so is a new coaching staff, everything is different now!!!

TAMPA BAY LIGHTNING’S SEASON may have taken an irreversible hit when star goali Ben Bishop was removed on a stretcher with what sure looked like a devastating knee injury!–Tampa Bay led last year’s Final 2-1 over Chicago when Bishop sustained a torn groin muscle. Black Hawks won last 3 games and the Stanley Cup. NOW, fate has bit the Lightning again, this time on Friday the 13th!! Later in the period star forward of the Bolts (Tyler Johnson) also went down with what FFR correctly called a cheap shot. Looks like he may be done, too!
    ————
Amazingly, Lightning leads 1-0 after one period. But I don’t expect that to last. Already down their top scorer and captain (Steven Stamkos), Lightning are now down their All-Star goalie and one of their best wingers. WHAT a Friday the 13th!!

PS: The doctor who helped get Ben Bishop on the stretcher is Dr. Ira Gutentag, local ace orthopedic surgeon who has performed two surgeries on my wife. The man is a brilliant surgeon. If any doctor can save Bishop’s career, it’s him!

  3. Who’s to say who is a good HC and who isn’t anyway. Look at what Lovie Smith did in CHI and look at what he did in Tampa. Was he a good coach in CHI and went to Tampa and sucked or was he lucky with the players he had in CHI and not with Tampa. Is Pagano a good coach? A lot of ppl credit Arians for Pagano’s first yr in Indy and making that team a contender.
What about Gruden? Did he do anything special in Tampa or did he ride the success of Dungy? Is Payton a good coach or is he lucky as shit to have Brees as his qb? When Brees is finished how good will Payton be then? Same goes for Belichick. Is it him or is it Brady? Will he be anywhere near as successful once Brady is finished.
Philbin came into MIA with the unenviable task of turning around a franchise that was in turmoil for years before he arrived and also had the unenviable task of working with Ireland for his first two years as a HC. Plus, pretty much just about everyone here, on Twitter and every other place where the Phins are discussed has been saying for four years that Tannehill hasn’t had an offensive line and the team hasn’t had the players on defense it needed to win games. When ppl defend Tannehill they keep saying you can’t win when the defense can’t stop anyone and the offensive line has been terrible at protecting the qb because of the injuries they’ve had. The coaches don’t draft the players and they also don’t sign the players brought in thru FA.
I believe Hickey got us headed in the right direction with the players he brought in but it still wasn’t enough. And, someone said earlier to not expect miracles from a new coaching staff this year, that next year is probably going to be the year when things start to look better.
So, when I look at it I’d say, yeah, some of it is on the coaching staff, some of it is on the front office for failing to support the coaching staff with the talent needed to win and some of it is on the players for not getting the job done too because coaches can’t make the plays.

i dont need stats to answer this. if one couldnt tell just by looking at how the team played no matter who the players were with cameron, sparano and philbin i cant really begin to know what they watch on sundays. i left saban out of that, because as much as a pussy he was and ran back to college one could tell he might of been a successful head coach. he is in college as we all know.

    • Oh, an expert I see. So tell me. How many years did you spend in the NFL as a GM?

    • so, you think it’s just easy for a coach and his staff to come in and turn things around quickly. most ppl looked at Ireland as a big douchebag who set the team back but I guess you didn’t?
What if the new coaching staff goes 7-9 this season? What does that say? It says that a new coaching staff isn’t going to solve everything in one year. But, you look at what Hickey did over the past two yrs bringing in talent and look at what the team did this year and the new coaching staff has a better starting point than Philbin and his staff did.
I’ll admit that Philbin and his staff probably did some things wrong and maybe weren’t the best at what they did but there’s a lot of coaches who have great talent to work with who are considered great coaches. Is Pete Carroll a great coach or is he benefiting from the talent he has on his team?

    New Age

As to my comment about our former HC’s, what I was saying is none of them are even at the rank of OC or DC. Never mind being a Head Coach elsewhere, none of them are any more than assistant or positional coaches. I think that says something. There are a couple of former DC’s that are still in that capacity, but considering how often coaches are recycled in the NFL, it’s pretty awful that none of those guys (former HC’s) are even coordinators. Just a thought.

Cam Cameron and Joe Philbin were both OC’s, although you can make a case that Philbin was an OC in name only, due to the fact that McCarthy was the play caller and designed the offense.

Let’s just forget last year and start with a clean slate this year being that so much has changed in the personnel dept., coaching staff and a lot of new personnel. Let’s hope we got it right this time and Gase and staff can get this team on track. Reliving last season doesn’t change anything or help anything this season. At least that’s how I’m looking at it. We really don’t know what to expect. Hopefully we’ll enjoy it though. Go Phins!!!!

    • BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

Well said. Even though I don’t have high expectations this year I’m excited for the season to start and see how these guys play and what the system looks like.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Thanks, I’m in wait and see mode too. But the one thing we can be excited about is we do have talent on this team in a lot of areas. It’s not like we’re a team with very little to work with. I think our depth will be better than last year when we were too green at too many positions.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Here’s what I think is crap about a lot of posts here, saying I like the changes, I like this, I like that, but I’m going to wait and see. You may be saying that, but you really aren’t saying that to yourself. We’ve been beaten down over the last several years, so I get it, but it’s not how it really is.

Tim, you’re as much of a Homer as Rock and myself, why pretend you’re not?

For that matter, even Mike and OD are Homer’s on the inside. There’s a big facade being displayed on this site. Why so afraid to say how you really feel?

  16. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I’m glad we’re signing DE Jason Jones. He’s a solid vet player that will add depth and competition to the position. He can move inside as well on passing downs. Over 8 seasons he’s been pretty productive and consistent with 28 sacks, 10 FF, 24 PD, 19 tackles for losses and 2 blocked kicks. He gets his hands on the ball with his big frame. He should help us.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Oh and if they don’t get him any PT he plays ST, good depth move, something the previous regime didn’t know anything about.

Hickey was a little better than Ireland, but still clueless as to how to build a team.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Hickey only had 2 years and he had to spend a lot of resources to rebuild the OL quickly. Ireland left him with very little to work with. You cant rebuild an OL in 2 years. We all know chemistry is huge on the OL and this unit has yet to find it. Maybe we’re getting closer, hopefully! 🙂

  18. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Steve, if you’re saying I root for my team and I hope for the best than sure I’m a homer. But I also look at it from a roster perspective and if I didn’t see enough talent I would say so. That is how I really feel.

We’ve never seen this team play before especially on defense where you’re going to see a lot of new players start and play significant roles. We could easily have 6 new starters and 2, 3 or 4 new role players in sub packages. That’s a pretty significant change in one year. This group has never played together so I can’t really say how it will look, but I do see potential to be a better defense. I’m just waiting to see it.

On offense we do have a lot of skill and to me Tunsil with Albert, Pouncey and James could turn this thing around on the OL. They need to stay on the field together though for more than a handful of games. I feel we have more talent, depth and competition on the OL so if those guys can hold down 4 spots we should be able to find one more respectable guard for the best 5 and then let the depth work itself out. But again, I’m waiting to see if it’s real.

  19. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

No, I’m saying inside you really like this team, your posts scream that, and you’re excited about the season, but yet every post that you write the way you really feel, you end them with we’ ll wait and see, like you’re afraid someone is going to call you out about being a Homer.

Why worry about what they say they’re Homer’s too.

Let the inner Homer out people.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Do I believe the potential is there based on talent? Yes! But like many have discussed there is a difference in just adding talent and becoming a god team. That’s what I’m waiting to see. I thought we’d be a good team last year with only one reservation, I worried about our experience with our depth and it did come back to haunt us. But the entire team struggled to be consistent. Now some of those young players have more experience so you hope they can take the next step, and hopefully we find some impact players from the new draft class and maybe find a gem or two that was unexpected.

I believe the Jones signing, that’s coming next week, is a result of the Suh effect. It’s not a coincidence vet D linemen want to play in Miami, to play on a line with a dominant force.

An article was written about Suh never being able to play up to his contract, that may be true, but the residual effect might say otherwise.

  22. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Steve

I don’t know what the definition of ‘homer” is, and I’m sure it varies from different people’s interpretations, but if it just means no matter what, I want the Dolphins to be a great team, and I will root for them no matter what, then I’m a homer. If it requires that you think every move they made is great, because they made them, strike me down, I’m not a homer.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

It just means you believe they have a chance to do really well this season. You don’t have to agree with everything they do, but you like what they’re doing and the direction they’re heading.

They trade up, you say argh, then ok, lets give them the benefit of the doubt, because even though Tannenbaum was here last year, Grier and Gase were not. It’s obvious that the FO is taking to heart what Gase wants, and most importantly Gase knows what he wants.

If Christensen designs the offense, and makes the game plan, I suppose so. McCarthy did that in GB, so all Joe did was call the plays. Joe is now an OL coach, I would think if teams desired his great offensive mind, he would have been an OC by now.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I think there’s a difference between the Miami fan in me, and the logical football observer assessing a situation with no homer bias. As a fan…I have illogical hopes for the team every year. I always start every year thinking 16-0 because who the hell gives up a game before you ever play it, right? Shit could happen…and the fan in me says why the hell not? Lol
    ***
The logical part of my brain says 8-8 give or take a game or two. An initial transition phase that might be rough and, hopefully, a maturation of this team by the end of the year. An increase in scoring by around 4-5 points a game would be nice, and a defense that can stop the run, get a TO/big play here and there and be much more consistent. If I see that and we’re still 8-8 it’s gonna suck, but I’m still gonna feel good about the team if they play hard week in and week out.

  33. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

My guess is Christensen will be in the booth with Gase calling the plays on the field. Clyde will help with the design of the offense and game planning. Philbin was in a similar role in GB. Does it really matter? If the team executes who cares who does what. I always felt too much was made of that. Most play calls are predetermined based on game situation and down and distance. It’s not like play callers call something nobody was aware of. LOL

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

You don’t really believe that do you? Of course it matters who calls the plays.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I think it’s overrated. Bill Parcells took over play calling on offense at times as a HC and he was a defensive guy. The formations and plays are already predetermined within the offense and game plan based on game situations. What do you think those color coded charts they use are? Game situation plays.

Yes can one guy be better at it than another of course, just like anything else. But it’s not rocket science. Execution rules the day. If you call a run play on 1st down and you lose 2 yards, was a it a bad play call?

Ok, it can be a clear sunny day. LOL Here’s to crying and laughing hysterically as the Dolphins dismantle the Bills in an astounding way! WHAT!!?? THEY SCORED AGAIN!?? I MISSED IT HIGH FIVING EVERYONE AROUND ME AFTER THE LAST SCORE!

Philbin designed the offense in GB and McCarthy called the plays. That’s why everyone was making such a big deal about Philbin not even being an OC because he didn’t even call the plays in GB. But, he WAS the architect of the offense.
    Reply

    Professor, I would say Philben was more the General Contractor of the offense rather than the Architect. My understanding of the relationship in Green Bay was this;

The offense was NOT Philben’s design. (meaning he did not design the playbook)
Philben put together the play calls for how they were going attack certain teams each week from the 1000 play play book and installed those plays into practice each week. (used the materials the Architect specified to build the house each week)
McCarthy, being Head Coach must certainly have input during the week’s install but Philben did the install.
McCarthy chose the specific play from the install that week during the game based upon game situation. (or sometimes may have gone totally off script with a another play that wasn’t installed that week but may have been practiced earlier in the year)

All that being said, I think Philben did lead the offensive install during the week and executed it in practices. (under McCarthy’s supervision as HC of course, just like the DC’s install) That makes him the OC, not a OC lite or anything.

Top ten in everything! LOL

    Mike,

From earlier, I agree about the coaches. They weren’t very good for the most part but I don’t think they usually get a lot of chances anymore either. It really depends on their record of success and how well they sell themselves. Chip is on his 2nd and final chance. Pederson won’t get a 2nd if he bombs in Philly. Or look at Munchak. Too many good coaches out there to waste time on some guys. Philbin was a bad hire and so was Sparano. They just couldn’t make the move.

On to homer status, I like to look objectively no matter how much I love the team. If the move looks bad, I get disappointed. I still cheer for our team even when I see garbage like Fuckface and Giant Pussy from Stanford waste their talent and make our team worse.

#1) The Miami/San Diego overtime classic. The greatest game I’ve ever witnessed in person!–It had the unbelievable HOOK & LATERAL PLAY as the gun sounded at halftime–the GREATEST SINGLE DOLPHIN PLAY OF ALL TIME!! –IF the Chargers want to show it on their Top 3, I say “FINE.”
#2) The Bears-Dolphins Monday Night game in 1985!! Took both my future wife and my future oldest stepdaughter to a game NONE OF US will ever forget!!
#3) Dolphins-Patriots shootout on opening day, 1994. Fins win 39-35 on a 4th down bomb, Marino to Irving Fryar. Marino and Bledsoe combined for about 900 yards passing!! SEEING ALL 3 OF THESE GAMES IN PERSON makes me one of the luckiest guys on the planet!

Citizens have tried for train for 35 years and was approved by citizens yet governor refused funding from federal government because it was coming from democratic administration. Crazy politicians…

  69. jetsssuck's avatar jetsssuck says:

Well speaking of crazy this one is from Trump. I think the guy has lost it and can’t distinguish between telling the truth and what is fantasy.

    https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/post-politics/paloma/the-daily-trail/2016/05/13/the-daily-trail-a-surprise-blast-from-donald-trump-s-past-knocks-him-off-message/57362416981b92a22d77f8bc/

On Friday, he did not. In a phone call to NBC’s “Today” program after this article appeared online, Trump denied that he was John Miller. “No, I don’t think it — I don’t know anything about it. You’re telling me about it for the first time and it doesn’t sound like my voice at all,” he said. “I have many, many people that are trying to imitate my voice and then you can imagine that, and this sounds like one of the scams, one of the many scams — doesn’t sound like me.” Later, he was more definitive: “It was not me on the phone. And it doesn’t sound like me on the phone, I will tell you that, and it was not me on the phone. And when was this? Twenty-five years ago?”

Trump has admitted in the past — including in court testimony — that he used the name “John Miller” to act as his own spokesman.

Coyle brought an attacking scheme, then when he was fired and his successor took over the same thing was said. All these reports and quotes are worthless.

    • markeyh's avatar markeyh says:

The problem with Coyle is he took over a 3-4 defense and converted the players into a 4-3. He took over a defense that was ranked in the top 5 and took them down to mid 20’s…….

    • markeyh's avatar markeyh says:

Yes, it was he made a huge mistake in fixing what wasn’t broke. Look at the new DC comments about why he is going with a 4-3 rather than a 3-4

“Both win,” Joseph told me. “And I’ve been a 3-4 guy most of my career. But when you come to a place like this and see the defensive personnel you’ve got, and, in my opinion, it’s not broken, you can’t all of a sudden go to 34 where you have to re-draft to a defense. That takes time. That takes too much time.

“And I don’t want to be a guy who as a coordinator, I’m a 34 guy with 43 personnel driven team. I’m not going to say, ‘Well, let’s change it,’ and set us back two or three years. That’s not smart in my opinion. That’s not coordinating. If this team had 34 personnel, we’d be a 34 defense. I can do both. For me, it’s not a big deal to be a 34 or 43 defense, it’s just numbers. It would be a shame to come to a place that’s close to being good on defense and then flip it, then you’re three years away again. I didn’t want to do that.”

  73. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

“Points Allowed” to rate a defense is only valid if non defense TDs are excluded and this isn’t cherry-picking stats. I do not know if defense rankings by points allowed is filtered or just figured by how many points were scored in the games, but INTs returned for TDs should definitely NOT be counted against the defense, nor should punts and KO returns for TDs nor should safeties against us, which in our case last year was a big deal. All of those are either on the Offense or Special teams. There are so few scores in football (just as in soccer or hockey) that even one or two TDs can skew a ranking by a few places.

Also a defense that comes in often after turnovers with a short field behind them would necessarily be more likely to be giving up more points.

This is why yardage allowed needs to be also figured in defensive rankings. Even that is suspect since a defense that comes in after a lot of 3 and outs by the offense is on the field much more than a defense that tends to come on mostly after an offensive scoring drive by their team.

So Time of Possession is also a very important stat.

These things all even out, but last year’s Dolphins defense is certainly one whose stats both against scoring and yards against were skewed by the offense’s inability to mount long drives.

  74. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

To me the way defenses should be ranked is by a ratio of how many non-scoring drives they turned in versus scoring drives they allowed. A 10 and out is just as good as a 3 and out, because no points went on the scoreboard either way.

Sure there is field position, fatigue, getting the offense rusty, etc. etc. about longer drives against the defense, but none of that goes right up on the scoreboard.

A successful defense would be one that never gives up more than 3 scores in any game.
PS: a successful offense must therefore average at least 24 points a game, IMHO.

  75. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

So we need 3 TDs and a FG per game, so that is 48 TDs in a season. Who needs to score those?
    Landry 5
    Parker 8
    Cameron 5
    Stills 3
    Caroo 2
    Grant 2
    Tannehill 2
    Ajayi 5/1=6
    Drake 5/2=7
    Sims 2
    Defense 3
other offense 3 (Duarte? Tunsil? Pead?)
    STs 1 (see Grant above)
That is a total of 48.

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I am just saying that that is a doable amount of TDs for us with the current personnel. When we had some alignments in the past, I would’ve said 48 TDs was not possible given their skillset.

  76. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Tannehill has thrown 24 TDs in a season and even Tannehill defenders like me feel that he needs to throw 30 to get us into the playoffs. So if we look at that ledger above, we can see 30-32 passing TDs. Again for the first time since Marino Days, I can see the players on our team that are capable of getting those TDs in the passing game.

GUARANTEE if Miami splits their first two games there will be a run on FINS TIX from the playoff starved local fans. ONE THING’s for sure: BUFFALO FANS will be present in large numbers. Last year’s home opener was about one-third JILLS’ fans in my section. By the end of the first quarter (17-0, Buffalo) over half the crowd still remaining were JILLS’ FANS. And one thing for sure is it won’t be burgers. Man has the cold serve process down to a science. He works like two days at home with his smoker and kitchen to get the meat, sides, sauces and everything just right. Then he rolls up unflolds the table and pops it all out for everyone to enjoy. No wait time on the grill involved. So maybe Buffalo tenderloin, but I’ll fight like anything against burgers.
