So that’s your defense of your poor reading comprehension?
    ___________________________
The fact of the matter is Steen got knocked down on one play but did well on every other play and was, by far, the most consistent among the backups in the Dallas game as well. If you watched the remainder of the players on offense you would have seen that. Just like one good block from an offensive lineman to spring a rb for a long run doesn’t mean he’s good; one play where an o-lineman gets knocked down doesn’t mean he’s not good.
There’s another fact here and that’s the fact that the coaching staff thinks he’s playing well and they made him the 2nd team C over Douglas. He was playing G in camp and they saw enough in him to ask him to play C as well. That kind of says a lot.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

That’s not a fact, Steen gets pushed back frequently. For Young I wasn’t stating a play he did well it was in rebuttal to your ridiculous idea that John beat badly on a running play when in fact Damien free landed the wrong way. The only thing you said that resembles fact is the coaches thoughts.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

You seem to be delusional in what a fact is.

  2. Steve,
Put it this way. When it comes to the o-line I hope you’re right because we need more depth. Depth is something we’ve lacked for a long time on the line and if we’ve got it this year it makes a difference. So there’s that.
It’s just like with my criticisms of Tannehill. I’ve never seen it in him but I always hoped everyone who did was right because the team can’t afford to have wasted a #8 on someone who isn’t going to pan out. Hopefully, with all the weapons they surrounded him with this year we begin to see it.

  3. D's avatar D says:

Steen has been someone I have been pulling for subs he joined us. He is a talented OL he just needed the opportunity. I also think one of his biggest hold backs is hasn’t been sued for the systems he has been in so far. He is more designed for straight man blocking schemes because he isn’t extremely fleet of foot but he anchors really well and he is a smart football guy. I think he would be better at OG than anyone we have had at RG do far but I also think bushrod will settle eventually as well. OC is a good place for him in this offense since we do roll hybrid man and zbs. If we were poor man I’d really push for them to move him to OG, but his football smarts combined with being more road grader I think plays better for us at OC.

  4. Tannehill has been the qb for four years, was the #8 pick overall, and fans are as patient as anything with him. Jordan Phillips was taken in the 2nd rd and played behind Mitchell last season and 2 preseason games so far this year and fans are like “he’s a bust.” how exactly does that work?

  5. D's avatar D says:

Tanny still needs to work on that pocket presence. Just go back and review closely the Dallas game and you warch him vs Prescott and I think you can see where he should have been moving when sometimes he didn’t. Prescott on the other hand was pretty damn good at it. Prescott will need to try a little harder to stay in the pocket on some plays but for the most part when he moved out of it, it was the right call and he made the decision at the right time. Not waiting too long and then having no where to go.

    • He’s good on designed roll outs and designed runs if the blocking is there but moving around the pocket definitely needs some work. You can see that even when he does move around the pocket he doesn’t always make the correct decision on where to go and instead of buying time he moves directly into a defender.

  6. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Wow Lou – The fact that we’ve had horrible coaching, not one of the former HC’s Tannehill had is even as high as on OC now doesn’t mean anything . . . .

Besides, we all knew he was going to take time to develop, I didn’t even expect him to start his rookie season, after playing only 19 games as a college QB at TAMU.

Let’s see what Tannehill can do with a legit HC, and a guy that really seems to understand what he’s doing with QB’s, and has a definite plan.

Who said Phillips is a bust? That’s silly talk

    • I wouldn’t say everyone knew it was going to take Tannehill this long to develop. From day one when people were saying he was the guy we should draft I kept saying he would take 4 years to develop and was met with tons of comments from people defending him before we even drafted him. After the draft for the past four years I’ve gotten more of the same. Maybe you’re the exception to the rule but many of the “we all knew it would take this long” crowd are full of shit because they’ve been talking about him like he’s been the one guy on offense who’s consistently getting it done when that’s not true.
However, I’m still of the belief that we can go 10-6 this year because they have surrounded him with some talent on offense that will make it easier for him to do his job without having to put the offense on his back.
We should be able to run the ball more effectively and the passing game should be that much better because of the run game and also because of the talent we’ve got to work with.
When it comes to Tannehill, my opinion of him hasn’t changed. He is what he is. He’s not going to get much better so you need to elevate the level of talent surrounding him in order to succeed on offense.

    • tons of talk on Twitter about Phillips not getting it done and fans saying team needs to find a DT next to Suh. Silliness is exactly what it is. Especially when you consider it’s preseason and Phillips has played next to 2’s and 3’s a good portion of the time. The D as a whole hasn’t been that stellar in preseason. People don’t understand how the games are being used as additional practice reps for players because of the non-contact rules in camp and that’s it. People want to win. Coaches want to develop.

  7. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Lou

I don’t think there’s anyone here who expected Tannehill to be a star from day one in the NFL. If you do, let me know who that person is. Nowhere in my post did I say expected 5 years for him to develop either. I thought he was on a good projection, he was improving each year, until last year, when he took a step back, albeit a small step. The whole team was awful last year, so I take that into consideration.

    • Mike
I’m not going to go back thru the archives of the original blog but when Tannehill was drafted I was the ONLY person saying it was going to take four years to develop him. Like I said, you may have been the exception to the rule but nobody else was saying “we know it’s going to take that long”. Never happened. I said he had accuracy issues then and he had accuracy issues, ball placement issues, thru last season. Pretty much everyone poo pooed what I said about him then. So, like I said, most of the “we all knew” crowd is in denial. Maybe it became clear to them after year 3 it wasn’t going to happen and that’s when they knew.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I don’t think I’m the exception at all Lou. I think some of us were happy with the way Tannehill was developing, and others weren’t. I think it still stands that way. I think now that he has more control over the plays, he has legit WR’s, and hopefully a better O-line, he will once again be on the upward swing and improve significantly from last year.

    • Thing is, for most, if the offense succeeds this year (and I expect it to be better) it’s all going to be about Tannehill and not about the team around him. From the point of view of the Tannelovers anyway. Just like the long pass to Stills. He chucked it up there long and Stills ran under the ball and made the catch. There wasn’t anything special about the throw. Watch how far Stills ran to get under that ball. As a qb you chuck it out there and let your wr do his thing. But, it’s “wow, what a throw by Tannehill”. Get real.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Well, we can disagree on that throw, is WAS a great throw. It wasn’t underthrown, and it wasn’t overthrown, it was a great throw on the run.

      • that’s exactly what I’m talking about. all you heard after that throw from everyone, whether it was on the blogs or on Twitter was “what a great throw by Tannehill” but I didn’t see a single Tweet or comment complimenting Stills for running under the ball and catching it. If you watch the replay from behind Tannehill you can see Stills tracking that ball in the air. It was a great play by Stills. Tannehill just had to chuck it out there and let him go get it. Great throw? hardly.

  8. Mike,
Best thing that can happen is he gets it done this year with the people he has around him. If he doesn’t I’m not going to be a happy camper if we need to go out and draft another qb next season.
I’m predicting a 10-6 season because I feel he should be able to do it because he’s got the talent to work with.

  9. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Anyone know what channel the game will be on tonight in the northeast?

  10. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Lou

I thought Stills had a very good game that night. I was really happy to see that. I’ve been critical of him, because I thought he was very disappointing last season, but if he keeps playing like that, he’s going to be a big help to our offense. He made the catch, and that’s what he’s supposed to do. It was to him, and he’s supposed to track it and catch it. I don’t see why it wasn’t a great throw, it was where he can catch it, and no one else could, right?

  11. Keep an eye on Shamiel Gary tonight. He was a player I watched at Oklahoma St and had picked for us as an udfa when he came out and is a player I expect will eventually replace Michael Thomas at S.

    Mike,
I kind of wish they would sign Stills to an extension now; I have a feeling he’s going to have a big year.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I hope so. I hope all our guys have big years, because if that happens, we’re playing well

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

      I like Stills
But I think he probably parts ways with us this offseason

If he has a big year and signs elsewhere, we will get a comp pick

We have good pieces at WRto let one go
Ideally I think in this NFL economic environment
You constantly replenish the skill positions
But you don’t bring guys in out of need, that’s when you overspend (Mike Wallace) or reach .
So we are in a good place at WR where we can bring another speedster in in the 2017 offseason without putting too much pressure on that WR to produce bc we have Landry, Parker and Caroo

  14. I think Jordan Phillips is going to have a big year at DT. I also think he’s going to lead the league in “passes knocked down” when he puts that big paw of his up. Maybe some result in turnovers. In any case, I see Phillips shutting some things down for opposing offense.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

      He’s a bad ass
But I don’t know if he is going to get the reps we want to excel

Do you think he is going to start?
I get the feeling Mitchell will be starting

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Well Philbin only really worked with Aaron Rodgers. He was never a QBs coach, he was OL and TEs. Gase has worked with multiple QBs. But as a HC sure Gase has to prove it. It just seems a lot of people across the league believe he will be. I don’t think it was the same for Philbin league wide.

To me it’s about consistency game to game and 4th qtr play for him. We as fans all hope he starts doing that.

All valid points. Do we get a comp pick if we didn’t draft him?

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

He’s still our property as we traded for him and it still comes down to that formula of losses vs. gains in FA. But that comp pick wouldn’t be until 2018.

  28. sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

    straight outta comp picks

  29. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Lots of throws aren’t always pretty but getting it in range to be caught is the key. Go back and watch some Marino highlights, plenty of big throws he made weren’t the prettiest of passes but he got it there. That’s all that matters.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

What I was getting at is Stills made the margin for error huge, by being that wide open, so the pat on the back really shouldn’t have gone to RT, but Stills. On the other hand that play was setup in practice by Gase, and everyone did there job. In practice maybe our S was in better pos.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Or maybe the play was designed to be thrown to the sidelines. We are quick to judge without really knowing what was designed.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I don’t really judge plays like that. If the play gets made it’s all good. WRs often make QBs look good on some throws, that’s their job to catch it if they can get their hands on it. We see receivers sometimes drop perfectly placed passes. The teams who make more plays and less bad ones usually have success. 🙂

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

It depends what you’re trying to accomplish Tim, surely you evaluate players too. When just watching a regular season game that may be the case, but not during a replay when the emotion is gone.

  30. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

People here and reporters alike will tell you I watched the tape, so I know…a lot of what actually happens on a particular play is far from the way we see it, like this long pass.

We see Alonso as Kiko doesn’t look the part, but we don’t see him in practice every day. VJ thinks he’ll be fine though. I know what else is he supposed to say, but it’s the way he said it. I guess we’ll keep own more tonight.

  32. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

If Tannehill threw that pass out of bounds, or too short, or overthrew Stills, everyone would have said it was a bad throw. The pass was totally catchable, and it was a big gain so it was a good throw. Can’t we leave at it that?

  33. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

These we don’t know issues are why coaches get so furious with reporters when they ask stupid questions about things they really don’t know anything about

    ————————————–
I disagree Tim. I think there are points with a QB that continue to develop with time and experience and there are some things that dont. I can see better things out of him so far this year so if he isnt still developing, then how is he improving in those areas. Its not like having great touch on his passes has always been decent and he just needs to be more consistent, he has been flat out bad, but this year i think its starting to come around finally.

I do agree that some items are about just becoming more consistent, he was pretty decent to good at some things already, and i agree that may not be considered truly developing, but then again it kind of is. The consistency comes from skills that aren’t fully natural to him becoming second nature. Again though, consistency isnt covering all the areas he needs to improve.

Pocket presence, for example, is for sure an area he needs to develop. Its not a consistency thing for him, in this area, its flat out not having a feel for it. He is a long way from just working towards being consistent in this area, so it truly is a development spot. I guess you could say im optimistic its not the end of the road as far as development in that area, but maybe you are right and it is.

  40. Ken's avatar Ken says:

Way too earlier to call Phillips a bust. He has shown the potential to be an impact player. He can physically overpower his opponent and does so at time. He has also shown the potential to overpower the all you can eat buffet line at times as well. Just like his days at Oklahoma he is inconsistent in his work ethic. If he consistently puts the effort in he can be beast but he needs to consistently put the effort in and so far the jury is still out on whether or not he will do that.

  41. Ken's avatar Ken says:

They hyper criticism of Tannehill on a 55 yard connection to Stills is the kind of stuff that drives me crazy. Tannehill made a good throw. It was a big gain. We should have scored 7 on the drive if Cameron or Landry held on to very catchable balls in the endzone. We can debate if he led him to far to the sideline or not but at the end of the day you throw that ball away from coverage which meant toward the sideline. I mean if we are going to criticize our QB for completing a 55 yard pass we will never be happy with any QB under center for us. There are things to criticize Tannehill about but that throw is not one of them.

That’s what Lou does, he picks apart RT any chance he gets, then talks up hacks like Steen. I agreed with what he said, but I wouldn’t have brought it up the way he did. Sometimes these things are huge, surely the score against the Cowboys would’ve been different, but…

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Against the Giants on the fumble return, #50 is celebrating a block he made near the goal line like he did something, but it was the guy he thinks he destroyed that stripped the ball, because of a poor technique block, that should’ve been simple, given the size of the mismatched opponent.

  42. D's avatar D says:

I think Phillips has been pretty good so far. Im not sure what you guys are watching but the guy have been disruptive in each PS game.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

The water was blue, the waves were crashing, the beach was beautiful white sand. It was hot but with a great island breeze.

  44. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

D, to me it’s more about RT refining his skills and being more consistent. He’s not a developmental player in my view anymore. I’ve seen him make every kind of play you could ask of a QB. It shows he can do it. Now it’s doing it at a high level more consistently and with the game on the line. But maybe it’s just semantics on how we view it.

That’s good to know. We stayed at Barcelo. Thankfully, all of us avoided the GI bug. I was stressing about that.

  54. Ken's avatar Ken says:

More than anything tonight I want to see some semblance of LB play that at looks like NFL caliber play.

  55. Ken's avatar Ken says:

    Brian:
Barcelo looked nice too. Our transportation van from the airport stopped there on the way to the Hard Rock and it was pretty cool looking place.

  56. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I want to see more semblance of overall defense and OL play. I think we have the skill players to make plays. We have to be better in the trenches first than the back end of both sides of the ball. It’s an uphill battle without solid trench play.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

I think the DL will be okay but it is the LB and DBs that I worry about.

      • D's avatar D says:

Im in the same boat Ken, the LB’s, specifically having a solid MLB to anchor that unit concerns me a bit, and after watching Maxwell get walked on last game im hoping to at least some significant improvement out of him and hopefully one fo the younger guys stepping up and distancing themselves as the number 2 guy.

    • D's avatar D says:

I think the OL play too a big leap forward last game. I think at this point its really just Bushrod cleaning up his play and maybe James a little. Of course there is also the Pouncey situation so it would be good to see that Steen has a good handle on his position as well.

  58. BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

    steve,
the last few years it hasn’t happen. I make copies of it regularly so if he does we can just go back to the latest copy.

  59. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

But the DL and OL has not looked okay with the exception of the backups in the 2nd half of the Giants game. You can’t evaluate LBs with shoddy DL play. It doesn’t work that way. What’s the old adage, you have the big boys up front to keep the LBs clean. That’s not happening. So the LBs get blamed. It’s starting right at the LOS on both sides of the ball. LBs and RBs can’t make the plays they’re suppose to if the guys up front are losing battles.

That said, I wonder how much game planning will go into this game or are the coaches still just looking for better fundamental play. TC and the PS has changed quite a bit in the last 10 years. Now it’s about keeping guys healthy, not really playing all out.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

I don’t think the DL looked terrible vs. the Cowboys. I think it was the LBs failing to make plays despite having opportunity to. There were plenty of times Alonzo had opportunities to make plays but either missed or put himself in the wrong position.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Last week the DL looked like they did against Washington opening day last year. Every run got to the 2nd level. Yeah the LBs made the tackles after solid gains but that’s what happens when the DL doesn’t hold the fort.

I’m also wondering if our coaches are asking these guys to not play 100% so they don’t get hurt. That’s the new theme these days and why the game looks like shit. But our coaches are new, I think Gase wants to make sure he has the majority of his major troops healthy heading into opening day.

Once the season starts it’s all out and if you get hurt it is what it is. But in the PS it makes you want to vomit. That’s how I felt about last week. Everyone was just gliding around with no urgency and Dallas did not play that way. So we got punked.

  60. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

It’s funny that Dallas has given us lots of trouble in preseason, and the only time we beat them recently they were very good that year, and we were mediocre, when we thought we had turned the corner and they were terrible.

  61. Ken's avatar Ken says:

I just want to see some clean play tonight. This is game 3, this is the dress rehearsal for the season so hopefully we put on a better display than we did vs. the Cowboys. If not Hulk might get very angry.

  62. Ken's avatar Ken says:

Alright. I am out for now. I hope to check back during the game. Peace.

  63. D's avatar D says:

Foster does not like doing interviews lol….

    • D's avatar D says:

Every interview i have seen him in he has seen like he doesnt like that whole process either that (an with our knowledge of the asshats asking those questions) or he REALLY doesnt like some of the reporters and their idiot questions.

  64. D's avatar D says:

Damn some of these frigging reporters look like they either have Parkinson’s disease or they are auditioning to be money shot specialist for porn…. they constantly just waving those figgin microphones all over the place int he interview. Id hate trying to do one of those post game/practice interview with Dick McShakerson manning the mic.

  65. D's avatar D says:

Tim i dont remember any of the run plays in either of those games that just flat up exploited the intieror of the defense. What i saw was on the LB’s. The LB’s had gap responsibilities that they were not stufing, and they werent wrapping up when they did close down their lanes. Specifically Alonzo, but i know i saw at least on Jenkins botched. DL unit was fairly solid. Whats worse is even though we are supposedly wide 9, the RB’s were bouncing it outside a lot, and thats supposed to be where out LB unit is designed to shine.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Did not see it that way at all. The DL looked lethargic and the LBs just kind of flowed around. I saw less than 100% effort or at least I hope that’s what I saw. We had no pass rush and no dominance up front. 2 or 3 LBs can’t just blow the play up every time with backs running with a head of steam past the LOS. That’s what used to happen in the mid and late 80s.

We can disagree. But if I’m HC I’m telling my team let’s get after it DL and OL. I’m tired of seeing you guys get overwhelmed at the POA and that’s what I saw. Time to play some football.

  66. D's avatar D says:

With the wide 9 they shouldnt be closing off gaps and attacking the carrier, there shouldnt be any meeting the back downfield. It wasnt like the OL was getting to the second level and engaging them either, they just flat out were missing their tackles and not playing aggressive. Alonzo seems to hesitate a lot before reacting too so i wonder if he is just not sure of himself in this new position.

Way Gase was talking is even though this is the night most 1’s will play most of their PS snaps, it sounds liek his isnt opposed to playing 1’s in game 4 if he feels he still needs more looks at people. I would be we would see Tunsil (maybe at LT instead of RG), Howard, Steen, Bushrod, Ajayi, Foster, and possible a few defensive starters as well in there just for some last minute evaluation.

Browns are trading the sixth overall pick from the 2013 draft, LB Barkevious Mingo, to the New England Patriots, per source.

Adam Schefter ‏@AdamSchefter 2h2 hours ago
    2017 draft: Cleveland now has Philadelphia’s 1st-round pick, Tennessee’s 2nd-round pick, New England’s 5th-round pick.

    • D's avatar D says:

I would probably have taken a shot on him if i were the Phins if it was only giving up a 5th.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Meh… he’s 6-4 240 and isn’t a 4-3 LB or DE. He’s another Chris McCain type and not as big. He has really regressed as a player in 3 seasons.

  74. D's avatar D says:

Will be interesting to see how thing go down on Saturday… I would kind of like to see Brandon Harris make our team too. I think he has looked pretty solid in PS so far.

I wanna see the Phins dominate in….

    • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

We need to open some lanes for our RB’s & We need to collapse the pocket and create chaos for Matty Lice and friends.

  76. D's avatar D says:

I have heard the Cards might cut Frostee Rucker as a possible roster trim down. If we are concerned about our DL that wouldnt be a bad option.

Bucs might also cut Verner, which would be a good vet pickup to help us at CB if we really dont think any of our youngins are separating themselves. He’s not a really big guy, so i dont know if he would fit our system but it could be a guy who could hod it down until one of them does.

Justin Gilbert also could wind up in that same spot, he does have some size to him and was pretty damn good in college, so again, devil you know or the devil you dont. Id be willing to sing a young guy like him with talent and see if you cant turn him around. Browns haven’t been good at developing anything so the fact he hasnt done much there really doesnt me think its completely on him.

Matt Elam in Baltimore may be on the outs as well, he was awesome in college, and it wouldnt be a costly reboot. I know he comes from good stock because UF churns out a bunch of solid secondary players.

  77. 81Howie's avatar 81Howie says:

  79. D's avatar D says:

Ahmad Brooks also kinda rumored might be cut by 9’ers, he’s like Mike E’s age in NFL years…so dunno he might be done but he has always been a pretty solid LB.

Your Marlins should be serious contender next year, you have that to look forward to. Gotta keep GS healthy for a full season

  87. I didn’t pick apart the deep throw by Tannehill to Stills nor did I criticize it. What I said was, when you look at how far Stills had to run to get under the ball and how far he had to track it in the air it was a really good play on HIS part but all you ever hear is “wow, what a great throw by Tannehill”. It was a good throw. he made the play but you don’t have to be an excellent qb to get a ball in the vicinity so your wr can make a play on it. Now, the 2nd td pass to Stills over the head of the defender in the corner of the ez was a really good throw. If he starts throwing the ball like that then we’ve got something.

Jermon Bushrod and Laremy Tunsil are the Dolphins’ starting guards for Thursday’s regular season dress rehearsal.
Neither player has run with their job the way the Dolphins had hoped this summer, but both are firmly on track to start Week 1. Tunsil is probably a little more secure than Bushrod, who has been struggling to put away Billy Turner.
