    • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

I tried to tell the Nutty Professor already….oh wait, that was steve. But yeah, I’ve seen some talent in Doughty that made me think Moore won’t be long for this team.

      • I have Dysert penciled in on the roster challenge. Only one who has him as a matter of fact. I pointed out to everyone that he was with Gase in Denver and Chicago and knew his system better than anyone else and it would be interesting to see what happens with him in Miami. I do have to agree that Moore’s probably finished in Miami and there’s a good possibility he’s among the first cuts to give him a shot to catch on elsewhere.

  49. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I only got to see a little bit of the game last night, but I have it recorded. I did like what I saw, Arian Foster scoring a TD and looking quite good doing so. Like what I saw from the defense too. Looking forward to seeing the rest, but I was pleased with what I saw so far

Dolphins OTs Ja’Wuan James and Branden Albert kept Ryan Tannehill clean last night. Neither allowed a pressure on their 31 pass block snaps.

  54. sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

I am concerned about Landry ‘ drops. That seems to be a plague this preseason.

  55. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Did anyone else here hold their breath when Wake tried to get around the corner and his legs went out, and the Falcons RT just dove right on top of him?

  56. You have to give props to Steen for last night. Played very well for starting at C for first time. Also, Warmsley looks like he should make the squad and Gary showed up again. Young guys are stepping up and it’s great to see because we didn’t see enough of this in the past.
I think this coaching staff is getting the best out of the players. We’ve seen some hiccups but I think it’s just growing pains. IMO this staff seems to be very good at what it does and I think we’re looking at a different team here. The past is the past. This is the future we’re looing at here and I think we’re finally going to start being competitive again.

    • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

Agreed Lou. James looked very good as well.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Steen does look very solid Lou

      • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

Maybe he turns into a stud, and we can trade Pouncey and his salary. I’ve always thought he was a bit overrated. Would be nice for something like that to work out for us for a change.

    • I’m not saying Steen is a guy who can replace Pouncey long term. I was looking at him to become a solid backup for the team and he looks like he can be. He’s putting together some good play in consecutive games and hopefully he continues to get better.
I’m not a huge fan of Pouncey but I’d rather we not part with him and keep the line intact.

  57. sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

Anyone else under the impression that Ryan has some extra zip on his passes this year and that’s maybe causing the drops? Players aren’t used to it?

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

There were a few fastballs last night

      Maybe that’s it

I just don’t think the concentration is there in the preseason from the vets that know they have the job locked up

Guys like Stills, Pead and Grant are balling bc their competitions for roster spots or their place on the depth chart

But some of the other guys don’t really seem to care too much

I don’t have a problem with drops in the preseason
If I see it continie in the reg season – steam will come out of my ears

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I agree, they aren’t going to put themselves at risk of injury. Cameron clearly was looking for the defender on his drop, the same with Landry.

  58. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

    Mike E

  59. All I know is Gase and his staff seem to be getting the best out of these guys and it’s good to see. Had some tackling issues but they came right back in this game and tackled much better. I’m not saying there’s not going to be some bumps in the road. it’s the first year under this staff and we all know there’s still some missing pieces on both sides of the ball but when you look at how the players are responding to the staff, how the staff interacts with one another and with the players on the sideline, how they’re constantly coaching and teaching during games; it’s something we haven’t seen in the past.
I mentioned that to the guys on The Finsiders a few times. How you see coaching staffs of other teams, teams that were competitive, constantly coaching up players during the games on the sidelines and we didn’t see that with our previous coaching staff. The constant communication and coaching seems to be making a difference.

  60. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Steen was horrible last night Lou, based on how you evaluate line play. He gave up a pass deflection, got pushed back on one running play…

  61. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

On the OL, still no running lanes inside, but if they can pass protect like they have since Tunsil and Bushrod went in with the 1s, we’ll be ok, and it won’t matter how Manny rushes we have per game.

  62. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

Pro Football Focus ‏@PFF 2m2 minutes ago
On 7 carries, Jay Ajayi averaged 1.6 yards/carry, and 2.1 after contact.

Meaning, the defense hit him 0.5 yards behind the L.o.S on average

  63. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

The quick slant in the endzone to Cameron was pretty uncatchable, the play we overloaded the other side with 4 receivers. That was thrown hard and in a place Cameron didn’t really get a shot at getting his hands on it.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

They showed the replay, should’ve been PI, and why he stared down the ref.

      • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

That’s what I thought at first, but it wasn’t PI because the defender didn’t turn him. It was within 5 yards so contact was allowed. They should have called a fade to him instead of a slant.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

You can’t hit the receiver before the ball gets there. The 5 yards is only when running a route before the ball is in the air.

  64. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Part of what the coaching staff likes in Steen is he doesn’t make knucklehead plays. Watching Pouncey with no one to block he sometimes helps another lineman, but doesn’t keep his head up, to see, if someone is breaking free. Pouncey’s does this far too often.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

And he makes Turner and Thomas look worse than they are, they still suck though.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I like his nasty streak, the way he finishes. He knocked a guy down last night, and he pushed him down again as he started to get up. I like that mentality.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I see zero mean streak in him. The play you’re referring to may be the one his man deflected the pass, if so he played that poorly, and got knocked on his ass.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Steve – I don’t think so. I’ll have to watch it again, but he was downfield on the play I’m thinking of, so I don’t think his guy could have deflected the pass.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Aiight different play. I don’t call it a mean streak when OL get physical with LB and secondary.

  65. Ken's avatar Ken says:

Hulk like what he saw last night. Hulk feel better but still not Bruce Banner yet

  66. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Steen gets pushed back a lot, but doesn’t lose his block, so he’s getting the job done, but he’s not a Pro Bowler.

  67. Ken's avatar Ken says:

I thought Steen looked good last night

  68. Steen is still a work in progress. He’s an udfa and is still learning his craft. Nobody expects him to be a starter in this league this year. I was hoping for solid depth on the line. He looks like he should be at least that this season.

  69. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

Watch Tunsil switch and pick up the inside move!

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

That’s what I’m talking about, that Pouncey doesn’t do enough of, and text book of Tunsil. This shit is contagious, and will make the line better. Not only does he pick up the free man he also pushes the guy he was blocking over to a teammate.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I think I might get teary eyed, we may finally have an OL😉

  70. BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

Last nights game gave me some hope that it won’t be a disaster year. The main issues I saw were CB (Lippett), TE (Cameron) and run blocking inside. Tunsil needs some work doing run blocking. Pass pro was pretty good. I don’t think I’ve seen tanny with that much time to throw.

Very good progress since last week. 🙂

  71. BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

It was reported during the game by sideline reporter Michele Tafoya that Pouncey said his injury has nothing to do with the previous surgeries on either hip, but rather, someone fell on it really hard and it’s merely bruised. Whether that’s true or not is up for discussion.

  78. bookman11's avatar bookman11 says:

    Good Morning,

That was a nice game last night. Nice to see Gase get some run by NBC during the night and at halftime.
This is what I hoped for in a head coach when they hired Philbin…..god did I read THAT wrong.
Gase just looks the part and the entire staff seems to be coaching the players during the game.

My favorite part of the game was when they were actually under center on 3rd and Goal at the 3, and actually ran the ball…..for a TD no less. I hope that kind of mixing up of formations and play calling is a sign of things to come.

My second favorite part was watching Tannehill audible…he looks so much more in charge. I think the announcers brought attention to that as well.

This could be a fun team to watch, and to watch develop as well.

Record the Dolphins and watch the Pirates when you’re done with the draft.
    ———–

Mike E — darn good advice but couldn’t help myself……was like a chicken sans head running, channel flipping, and making FF choices like a fool, even as I tried to eat.

    As it turned out:

    Phins won and looked good.
    Pirates won in the tenth.
    I ate.
Ended up with a fantasy team (that somehow has both Landry and Parker).
And I might even be in the running for the Howie’s score contest….nailed the D points allowed at least.

    Been worse nights 🙂

  87. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

You tell me Mike E knew going in that the bell weather types at RB were thin and the WR crazed folks would be doing that. But since I was just picking and watching TV didn’t see exactly how crazy on wideouts they were getting. And since wasn’t doing research as I went along, went with names I knew.

So it ended up like this (12 team)

    2 Adrian Peterson, Min RB
    23 Eddie Lacy, GB RB
    26 Jamaal Charles, KC RB
    47 Jarvis Landry, Mia WR
    50 Randall Cobb, GB WR
    71 DeVante Parker, Mia WR
    74 Tyler Eifert*, Cin TE
    95 Eli Manning, NYG QB
    98 Danny Woodhead, SD RB
    119 Torrey Smith, SF WR
    122 Tony Romo, Dal QB

  88. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I’m hosting my FFL draft tonight. We’re in a 4 player protect league and I already traded my 1st rd pick to retain Alshon Jeffrey. What do you guys think of my 5 protects:
    QB Aaron Rodgers
    RB Todd Gurley
    WR Julio Jones
    WR Odell Beckham
    WR Alshon Jeffrey

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

How many teams in your league?

In a 12-team you already have three firsts, one that might be (Rodgers) and a 2nd (Jeffrey)….so looking good.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

10 team league but we protect 40 so we really start at 41 in our draft. I basically traded my #4 pick (#44) for Alshon Jeffrey.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Sound like a smart move to me, but then I’m not used to how it works……when you go that way.

Given those five though can give some general advice…..obviously you need a RB with those three wideouts set up.

And Rodgers gives you a great position in that he is the only QB you have to keep on the roster. Other than the top 3 or 4, they are so closely bunched not even worth the effort. You can see up above who I ended up with.

That creates a spot to develop of handcuff. Pays of week by week…least sometimes.

The other position like that is TE. I choose Eifert cause he is that every week TE, even may have to wait a few weeks into the season. Gets me that extra spot given that I went the 2 QB route.

  89. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Stanger, I haven’t done a complete redraft in so long I don’t know how that works. LOL

You have a quality looking team. Yes my fist pick in the 2nd rd will most definitely be a RB.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

You should be the opposite of me. I’m going to create a WR farm system cause I am 3 solid up top at RB. You should do the same thing for RBs, and hate to say it but one of those goes down at it is more significant.

  90. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Stanger

Seems pretty solid. You took AP with the #2 pick though?

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

      Is it a PPR league?

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Oh the harsh on the PPR. My strategy coming in was to go RB heavy cause I saw how top heavy it was. So only Q was Gurley or AP unless Anotonio Brown was not picked first (which would have changed up my whole draft).

I choose AP. Could have been wrong on that, but then Gurley was only arguably the better pick.

Saw an advantage to run RB heavy up top given the depth of the wideouts.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I didn’t necessarily say it was wrong, but I may have taken Gurley or Antonio Brown, or even David Johnson.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Brown wasn’t an option for me, but you could be right on Gurley or Johnson over AP. Am no better at picking talent than anyone else. But have done well mainly with overall strategy.

        My basics.

Lock up either WR or RB strong up top (which one depends on depth).
Think about a stud QB (pricey) so you don’t need a back up QB.
If not, spend for a TE that needs no back-up (less pricey).
Either one of those opens an extra develop slot.
Whichever btwn WR or RB you don’t go heavy on….speculate with a bunch of them,.
All assumes you are hitting the waiver wire every week though.

  92. D's avatar D says:

Steve Steen got pushed back by a guy who has a ton of power and he did what a good lineman does, especially at OC. He gave some ground to establish his anchor but when he did, thats where the push ended.

I saw only one play where he gave enough ground for it to be considered collapsed pocket and he did eventually get the anchor. Heagman is just a big strong guy to have to snap then set your anchor on.

All in all he did a great job as an OC. In general a OG would generally assist until the OC got his anchor if the guy is lined up directly over the inside of the nose like that. He did it on his own with only a little give to get his anchor set

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Steen will be fine. You still feel like Doughty can be #2QB for us this year? He would’ve been a great backup QB for us the last 4 years, because he’s cheap and didn’t have to play, but this year he’s not ready.

  93. D's avatar D says:

Whole OL unit was solid. Bushrod was still the weak link but even he seemed a lot better. James was excellent, Tunsilwas really impressive, Steen I though was very good, Albert was pretty good, but he usually is. Bushrod is getting there and our OL lookef so much better because of it

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

“Bushrod was still the weak link”

Hoping no matter who it is that the RG will be the least solid link at least. Otherwise we have problems…..unless some one really steps up.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

It’s alright to be the weak link on an OL that’s performing well.

  94. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Steve, I really think we might keep 3 QBs: Tannehill, Dysert and Doughty. Moore didn’t even play last night and I’m not sure if it was because they wanted to give Dysert and Doughty more work and didn’t need to see more of Moore lol, or he’s on his way out. But Dysert looks so much more mobile than Moore and I don’t see a big difference in skill there. We’ll see.

There are rumors out there that the Jets may keep 4 QBs which is very unusual.

Last night in the 4th qtr Schaub had a 1st and 25, that he converted in 2 plays. I said to myself at 1st and 25 I bet they get it. CB help can’t come quick enough.

Schaub was a former probowler going against people who probably won’t even be on a team. I would have hoped he converted from 1 and 25 in 2 plays. We need CB help, but that’s not a reason.

Yeah it kind of is. By that logic he should score every drive. Schaub isnt quite a Pro Bowler any longer, so not sure what that has to do with it.
