Ask Mike – 2016 Season – Week 1

ASKMIKELogo

from Piggy

Q – Mike, watching the game, I thought we were running the ball well in the 1st half.  Then I see we finished with 64 total rushing yards.  What happened?  Also, how do you think Foster did in his debut?  He averaged under 3 yards per carry, but it felt like he made something out of nothing.

I don’t think Foster was really effective running the ball, and I felt like Gase didn’t trust anyone else to get carries against that D.  Foster did have 19 touches overall, and I think he was much more effective receiving, when he had a little space and a head of steam going.  To be fair, he wasn’t getting holes to run through, and that, combined with not having Ajayi made Gase give up on the run game.  I can’t really compare that to Carroll staying with the running game, he had the horses with Michael and Rawls, so my guess was Gase didn’t love his second option of Damien Williams, and I can’t blame him.

I think Foster needs to be part of a tandem system, and at least early on, shouldn’t be carrying a big load of the offense if we want him to make it through the season.  I expect Ajayi to bounce back real nicely with some fire in his belly, so watch for that this week against the Patriots.

Q – Hi Mike,

Can you tell us when we can expect the phins back in the playoffs? It seems like every year we say we’re a couple of years away but never get there.

 Thanks,

 Boulder

I know many will disagree with me, but I think that was a playoff caliber defensive performance this past Sunday.  Someone has to lose, and unfortunately, it was us, but the defense played great, and that’s good enough to be in the playoffs.  Sure they didn’t hold at the end of the game, but if they play like this week in and week out, and the offense does it’s job better, we’ll be in the playoffs in 2016

I do think the offense will be better when Parker is healthy and able to contribute, and I also think Ajayi makes a much bigger impact on the run game.  Gase didn’t want to stop running, he just didn’t have guys he was comfortable with in the backfield.  That won’t happen from here on in.

from Stanger

Q – Jimmy Garoppolo had a 106 QB rating against a tough Cardinals D and without Gronk.

You figure we show him respect after that or go with every crazy look we can think of to go after him?   He’s still a young QB and not Brady.

 stanger

I expect that we’ll be coming after young Jimmy, or as Son put it so well, Janeane Garafolo.  Our front 4 need to harass him, and yes, the game plan for NE will be a nice dose of Blount, and a quick short passing game that will test our LB’s with Julian Edleman, either Martellus Bennett or Gronks, or even worse, both.  Pressure will be key, because if young Jimmy has time, he will probably slice us up like he did to Arizona.

I don’t expect a lot of blitzes, because that leaves huge holes in the coverage, but I’m sure we’ll dial up a couple of them, and hopefully, they are well timed.  From what I saw last week, I like our chances against NE, we just need our offense to do more, and I think they will.

___________________________________________________________________

from Wyoming

Q – Who was your biggest surprise among the offseason additions to the team?

I would have to say getting Laremy Tunsil at pick #13.  You know I’ve wanted O-line help for a long time, and was all crazy about us drafting La’el Collins until the investigation fiasco went down.  We needed so badly to shore up the O-line, and getting a potential top LT at #13, who can play OG while we have #76, Branden Albert, was perfect for us.  That was huge.  No way I thought we had a shot at him, so that would be it for me.  I could have said getting Coach Gase too, because for once, we actually got the hottest guy on the market.

___________________________________________________________________

from New Age

Q – We are playing another team with a great defense this week. Which player (besides Tannehill) needs to have a ‘breakout’ game for this offense to score the points needed to win?

There’s a few I could pick, because I think it;s going to take more than one player to step up to beat the Patriots at home, but if I had to pick one, it would be Devante Parker.  It was really a virtual tie between him and Jay Ajayi, but due to the fact that Foster still may start, and end up getting more touches, I chose Parker.  Both NE CB’s are 5’11”, not small necessarily, but Parker at 6’3″ is the guy that should be able to give them trouble.  I think Ajayi though could play a big role this week, because it was obvious Gase had no confidence in anyone else behind Foster, and I think we were all under the impression Gase was committed to running the football, so I think Ajayi should see plenty of action, as many as 15 carries and maybe a a few passes out of the backfield as well.

Man, it would be nice if we got ANY production out of the TE’s.  If the Patriots ignore Cameron (I would), he could have a big game, but I just can’t pick him, because like Gase has no confidence in Damien Williams, I just have no confidence in Jordan Cameron.

___________________________________________________________________

from SB7

Q – Do you feel this team tried to rely too much on the same people offensively during the Seahawks game and what should we attempt to do differently in the Pats game that we didn’t do in Seattle to spark the offense?

 SB7MVP

I do SB, but I think it was mostly due to a lack of quality depth.  At WR, we did get Carroo involved a bit, and obviously Stills too, who started, but at RB, the depth was real thin, so with Ajayi back in the fold, we’ll see much better balance from the RB’s.   With Devante Parker hopefully returning healthy this week,  that’s another big target for Tannehill, so I expect the ball to be spread around much more evenly in the Patriots game.

I also think Tannehill may have been a part of the reason, because I get the impression he doesn’t feel completely comfortable with TE Jordan Cameron (Why should he?), and then after the Stills drop, I think he may have felt the same way about Stills.  Neither guy to date has given Tannehill a reason to be comfortable with, so I think Tanny played a part in the lack of distribution.

___________________________________________________________________

from Tim

Q – What part of the team right now concerns you the most? Thank you!

I think the worst unit on this 2016 Miami Dolphins team is the TE’s.  The depth is pretty dismal, and you well know I’m no fan of starter Jordan Cameron.  Last year he was 26th in receptions, and he had only 3 TD’s, which ties him for 19th.  Considering he’s not even a good in-line blocker, that’s horrible.  FWIW, he did throw a pretty nice block this past Sunday, but we need him to be the seam threat he should be, and start making some big plays.  Dion Sims seems to have disappeared entirely, and then after Sims we have the ST ace MarQeuis Gray.

On the PS lurks UCLA TE Thomas Duarte, who I feel could help our team from a receiving standpoint.  I hope the kid gets a shot to make that happen, but it’s unlikely, so either Sims needs to return earth and start doing something, or Cameron needs to recapture the magic he had that one glorious year in CLE.  Otherwise, we may be the worst TE unit in the NFL.

GREAT JOB, MIKE!! –Sorry I’ve been out of the loop a couple of days to tend with a major medical injury concerning my beautiful wife. Also my grand daughter’s husband nearly bled to death when he ruptured an aortic blood vessel. He’s in his 30’s and has been told he’ll never work again. Oh, well, no one gets a free ride in life, right?

Im not going to go WAY back either, mine just is from people i saw play, before all you old dudes start throwing in Deacon Jones, etc.

  13. D's avatar D says:

I rescinded my earlier statement of benching Stills, as what i really meant was more like Randy suggested, he loses snaps as a show of not happy with that performance from the coaching staff. In my revised statement i said they should have both guys active, split some of the snaps between Hunter and Stills. I think its a fine idea because you get to see what Hunter has and Stills gets a reminder that he wont be given anything, he earns it or he loses it. Either way its a win for us. So i stick by the fact that we should do things like this. We did it to Ajayi in a very marked way, and yes its because what he did needed a kick in the ass. Hopefully though the message to Ajayi was reached and hopefully we send a message to Stills in an appropriate manner to also get the best out of him.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

The problem with that is Hunter drops a lot of passes, so to replace Stills with a guy that is worse at catching the ball (reason Stills is in doghouse) isn’t a good solution.

Thanks Stanger – I always thought she was very attractive.

      • D's avatar D says:

I know man im just yanking your chain. I personally dont find her attractive, but im not from that era, and all of that stuff diminishes the attractiveness of a woman to me. I know it was a different time, also i am not saying she is a bad person.

      • D's avatar D says:

And actually no, i wouldnt feel more about a man of that era doing that of being a big star because how he rolled in his personal choices. Im not attracted to me, so by default the sexual promiscuity doesnt factor into if i find them attractive. It does for women, because i am attracted to women and thats a diminisher to attractiveness. As far as people, as far as rock stars, she is one of my favorites from that era of music. I consider her equivalent if not better than other males from her time.

  16. D's avatar D says:

Id say late 30’s early 40’s, just as a guesstimate.

  17. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Mike — I have more hope for Cameron than you. And the way I figure it if we make the playoffs…..he has to become a weapon. Do see the potential in him for that. Man is fast, runs good routes and gets open. Only problem is when the ball does come his way.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Like I’ve said, I had him in FF, and watched a bunch of his games. He’s capable, but very inconsistent. He was a big play guy a few years ago, he was open deep often, and he made big plays. His problem has always been consistency. He’s not like Jason Witten where you know he’s going to make the catch, he just drops too many passes. If you look at his career, he really had one good year, where he caught the majority of his targets and had a very good season. Otherwise, he’s done what he did here last season. I’ll take something in the middle TBH.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

He’s a seam/redzone threat. And heck I would take Witten too, but he by far has the most potential out of our TEs. Same time — man would an all tool (even if not seam speed) TE be great….but we got what we got.

      ———————————————-
he is undoubtedly a weapon, but Mike is right, how effective is a weapon if it only works some of the time, especially at TE.

I mean would you put your trust in a weapon to defend your home and family if half the time it doesn’t fire. I mean that gun could blow a hole in shit a foot in diameter, but if you pull the trigger and it doesn’t go boom, you and your family are dead.

  18. D's avatar D says:

Im actually slowly going to Mike’s side on Cameron. He just isnt consistent. He makes a great catch and does some nice stuff with it one play and misses an easy one that was crucial for a first down the next. TE have to be consistent to be utilized well because tthey are generally the outlet, 3rd down target for first down yardage guy. If they cant come up with it they are just drive killers.

    • D's avatar D says:

I still think his talent level is undeinable and not many TE’s can do what he does, but i mean if you cant do the routine stuff, who really cares about the big play stuff.

  19. D's avatar D says:

Steve i think Hunter needs to fail here before we call him a failure for us. So much can change with a player and a change of environment. Being cut also may have woke him up to the fact his career is in jeopardy. Still has show us he drops big catchs, he has shown US, not another team. Again, i think the idea of benching him outwright was the wrong thing to have said, and i revised my statement, but seeing what Hunter can do for US, is important as is Stills being checked to create a sense of challenge to improve himself.

There is nothing wrong with rotating Hunter in on some of his plays, if it works out you know you have an alternative, if it doesnt work out you know you should move on, and Still is same, if it encourages him to up his game, great, if not then we needed to move on anyways.

  20. D's avatar D says:

Couple of replys to you above Stanger

  21. D's avatar D says:

We couldnt afford Hunter Henry this past draft, but he is esxactly the kind of TE that makes an offense like this work. Very very close to Witten in comparison, very complete TE, with higher than average intelligence at the position. Jake Butt right now is looking like one of those guys too.Just really smart, and overall good TE.

Does seem we are behind in the TE thing though. Some other coach who shall go unnamed in our division figured out how important the TE was in the evolving game long before you, me or most of the other people in the league did.

  29. sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

I’ve always been a mouthpiece for using the Two TE set. It’s just so versatile. You can run, you can pass, you go I form or offset. You can go 3, 4, or 5 wide. Line up WR twins. You can have a blocker or singleback. I don’t understand why more teams don’t employ it, especially in hurry up. I know you won’t have 2 TES who are great, but they don’t need to be they just have to be put in a position to win a matchup along with the other skill positions.

  30. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Speaking of the evil genius — he’s always thinking. Completely blows away the safety reasons for the new kickoff rule, but…..not his department.

We may see this one this weekend.
    ————————————-
New England coach Bill Belichick appears to have considered the rule differently than intended. The 25-yard line change may indeed incentivize a receiver to take a safe knee, but it also tempts the kicking team to hit it higher and shorter and force a return. Giving up those 5 extra yards is too valuable.

Late in the action in Arizona, was the real-time, game-on-the-line example. Patriots kicker Stephen Gostkowski didn’t blast the kick into the end zone hoping for a touchback. Instead, he booted it as high as possible, giving his teammates time to rush down the field, hoping to land close to the 1-yard line and forcing a return.

It worked. The Cardinals’ Andre Ellington took it at the 3 and rushed forward, only to be tackled by Nate Ebner and Patrick Chung at the 17. That alone meant plus-8 yards for New England. There was more however. The Patriots’ Jonathan Jones had come flying down the field only to draw a holding penalty on the Cardinals’ Tyvon Branch. That sent Arizona all the way back to their own 8-yard line – now a plus 17-yard play for New England.

    Dolphins at Patriots
MDS’s take: Some teams find ways to win, some teams find ways to lose. The Patriots, without Tom Brady, found a way to win at Arizona in Week One. The Dolphins, despite having every opportunity to pull an upset in Seattle, found a way to lose in Week One.
    MDS’s pick: Patriots 24, Dolphins 20.

Florio’s take: It’ll be another close-but-no-cigar showing for a Dolphins team that soon will be winning these games.
    Florio’s pick: Patriots 17, Dolphins 14.

  34. D's avatar D says:

Very common for kids to roll the teacher’s house down here. Coaches get it the worse. We had an ongoing war with one of our coaches, he would prepared to be rolled and “defend” his yard, which might include water hoses and shaving cream bombs, etc and we would just keep at it until we got it adequately rolled.

  35. BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

To have a chance of winning this weekend we have to stop the pats running game. It seemed like they were running a lot more without brady. Put them in 3rd and long if possible. The cards didn’t do a good job of that.

    Boulder,
To me it’s going to be another defensive battle.
If the Dolphins can’t consistently bust up the NE offensive line blocking then it’s going to be a long day. Really if you look at Garrappolo, he often had the benefit of a clean pocket to operate in. His stats looked good but I watched him sail a few passes that some of his WR made great adjustments on late in that game to haul them in.
If the Fins can really get to him often he will throw a couple of INT and eat big sacks.

Neither can Pouncey, Drake, or Mitchell. Wake, Foster, Misi, and Albert have an injury history now. Add in Ajayi, Kiko, Culliver, and Jenkins.

We just never seem to fill either unit consistently. When you are asking backups to play significant time every year on both sides of the ball, no wonder we don’t do better.

Bookman – Thanks for not “Price is Righting” me this week.

  61. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

We have no shot of winning this weekend. The refs will not allow it.

  62. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Just another Mikey lyrics screw up, but in the Fleetwood Mac song “Dreams”, Stevie Nicks sings “Say women, they will come and they will go, when the rain washes you clean you’ll know”

I thought she was saying “Say women, they will come and play with gold”. LMAO!

    Miami 16-13 over the patsies*

  64. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I even owned the Buckingham – Nicks album which was before Fleetwood Mac invited them in.
I loved some of the really old FM blues tunes.

  65. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Hey don’t I get half a kudo for my pick last week? I said Seattle would get a TD and 2 FGs and we would get a TD and 3 FGs.
If we had kicked one instead of going for the 4th and 1 and not gotten the other one blocked I would have been dead on it.

  66. 81Howie's avatar 81Howie says:

Funny thing about that album’ Me, Bernie and Bornstien Ripped it off from Richards Department store. I had Rumors and Hotel California but the securtiy gaurd follwed us down on the escalator. I Bolted and ditched them under a car. Bernie and Bornstien got busted…
I was sure they where going to Narc on me and the Cops would be at my house when I got home.
I ended up getting those albums sometime later and everything was cool…

DIDN’T THINK I’D get back on the board tonight but here I am.
FIRST, I want to thank Mike E, Young Stanger and Tim Knight for your kind words of encouragement, plus anyone else I may have missed. It means a lot. My youngest daughter, who is 48, also had a bit of a set back when her seizure disorder took a turn for the worse. But her doctors at Vanderbilt University are confident that tweaking her medications and diet will get her back to less frequent grand mal seizures. She was struck by this ailment in her 30’s and has not driven a car or worked since then. At one time she was an administrator for a hospital emergency room in Chattanooga. She’s dearly hoping, some day, she can return to her dream job. When I go to work in the morning each day, I ponder how lucky I am to be able to work. There are so many citizens out there who WANT TO WORK and have been educated to do the job but, due to circumstances beyond their control, they can not work. When things go a bit bad on YOUR JOB, remember, there are many out there who’d LOVE to have your job, or ANY job, to go to.

Fins @ Cheats. When the inury reports are all in tomorrow, I’ll make uo my mind on that game.–Oh how I’d love to see our boys kick some major league ass in Foxboro. We haven’t won there since 2008 (the “WILDCAT” game). Watching Patriot fans leaving the game with 5 minutes to go was truly GREAT! –If Miami some how wins that game, Rock Head Stadium will be ALIVE for the Cleveland game!!

Mike E: –Your Mets have a really good shot to make the playoffs, despite a season full of injuries. BULLY FOR THEM!! –My Marlins, also beset by an extraordinary run of injuries, are far less likely to make up a 4 game deficit. But, all things considered, I’m pleased with their season and I’m already thinking about Spring training when I intend to take a healed Mrs. OD over to the east coast of Florida for a Mets/Marlins exhibition game in March. It’s one of many reasons why I LOVE THE SUNSHINE STATE!!

  68. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Howie – You’re a hardened criminal! lol

  69. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    OD

Tough race, but they definitely have a shot, possibly to even get the 1st WC spot, but I haven’t been talking about them, superstitious. lol

  70. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    LOL Naples

  71. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

ok gotta go watch the game. Are we rooting for the Bills or the ewww I can’t even type that.

  72. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

PS: I thought bellicheat made Arians look like a chump last week.
Just out-coached him in every phase, every quarter, every chess move.

  73. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Where do you rank these guys
3 of them played for the Dolphins

    I have LT as 1
    Jason Taylor might be 2

  74. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

Is everyone rooting for a injury riddled 0-0 tie?

  75. son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

    God bless your family OD!

  76. son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

I have Taylor ahead of LT and 99 has the only shot at a first round ballet.

  77. son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

Maybe Heinz gets in he’s ahead of LT too sorry I missed him on first glance

  78. son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

No Super Bowls hurts JT so does being a stej for a year.
LT has no winning and no records even though he was good, real good
Heinz has 2 rings I think and he was solid

  79. son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

Wyo, ties fuck up everything. Can’t they both lose?

  80. Ken's avatar Ken says:

Let’s have lots of injuries and the Jets lose

  81. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Go Bills, err Jets, err screw both of you!

  82. Ken's avatar Ken says:

Fuck! Jets take the lead and Marshall is walking around on the sidelines

  83. Ken's avatar Ken says:

Ok Marshall going to locker room. I feel better. I am a bad man

  84. son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

Stupid ass faggot Martin, Richie should still be here

  85. son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

Shame that you could ask anybody and they’d say Tannehill is the 4th best QB in the division

  86. Ken's avatar Ken says:

    Fucking Marshall

  87. Ken's avatar Ken says:

    Bills look horrible

  88. olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

THANK YOU, Son-of-a Son. How’s the grand kid??

  89. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Revis getting torched 2 weeks in a row, there’s been talk about moving him to Safety.

  90. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Seems the jets have some issue on the back end.

  91. Randy's avatar Randy says:

Taylor kinda so-so except for a great scramble and throw and another beautiful throw. 2 big plays are the only reason the bills are even in this game.

  92. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

My how the MO has changed.

  93. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Who are you guys rooting for in the battle between ugly and diseased?

I think I want the home team to win
I want these teams to split their series
    Or die in a crash

  94. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

LMAO @ Son’s comment on how you could ask anybody & they will say Tanny is 4th best QB in our division.
Are you trying to entertain the blog here or yourself?

  95. Randy's avatar Randy says:

Now that was a horrible drop.

  96. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

So jets have a holding penalty on the long catch by Decker, after the play Decker gets a taunting penalty. They move the ball back 10 yards for the holding, but what happened to the taunting? If you can only take 1, why didn’t they walk off 15 yards?

  97. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    steve
Looked like he short-armed it a little, but that’s a bad drop no matter what. Just like Stills big drop, that should be a catch. I liked it because it kinda stopped the bills momentum.
