We need to design better runblocking schemes.

  2. BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

I agree. The defense is the main issue with this team. I think thursday could get ugly.

  3. New Age's avatar New Age says:

    28-17 Cincy.

They are the better team and this isn’t the week we pull off the improbable. It’s really bad that Tanny has as many TOs as TDs. He’s way past the point that should happen. Reminds me way too much of Cutler without the injuries. Defense is awful and it may take until next year to see real improvement. Will watch with no expectations until next year. Tanny might get competition with the top 7 pick we get next year.

  4. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Although I do see the flaws in Tannehill, I still think our LBs/CBs and run DEs is a worse problem needing more immediate draft day help.

  9. 81Howie's avatar 81Howie says:

Its always funny watching Rothlisberger get sacked, Not cause most everybody hates him but its like he is so big or something that his sacks never look ordinary and are usually quite comical. That last one resulted in a fumble

  10. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

meanwhile, Landry is becoming a PPR league STUD.

  11. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

run blocking HAS to get better when (if) Pouncey gets back. I like Ajayi and Drake’s chances if they get a little daylight. They both hit those openings very quickly.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

No doubt about that one. Crowd noise is amplified btwn the shade cover and seats closer to the field. Worked great today, but have a feeling might not be as good in other games.

Home opener against a team that doesn’t travel well. And even when their relatively few fans made themselves heard on plays.

Think you will get what I mean when we play the Steelers. Will hear our noise more….but same will go for the visitors.

2017 is the year to ‘trade’ Tanny if he isn’t the guy. Solid QBs get .500 seasons. To win a SB we have better chances finding a QB that doesn’t need 4 to 5 rd 1 picks in front of him LOL

I wish I could feel like you guys do, I just can’t. All I see is a kicker who was awful for the other team that allowed us to win a game against a depleted team with their 3rd string QB. A bad team to begin with. While I’d rather win than lose, I’m still very disappointed in the performance.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Mike E — not like we were going to win the superbowl. Once you accept that, it is just entertainment. And entertaining it was.

On that same token, every year we see teams with new HC’s, new OC’s and DC’s, and even a new QB, like the Eagles doing well. We have a 5th year QB, and All-Pro DT, talent all along the D-line, what should be a solid O-line with the addition of Tunsil and Bushrod, and yet we just stumble, and really we tried hard to lose this one. The Browns had us at the end of regulation, their kicker just didn’t come through. It’s disheartening to me to always see us play well enough to lose. I figured with Gase, we’d improve and finish a game, instead of luck out that the opposing team’s kicker they signed off the street blew it. I know there are more than one way to view things, there are many, it’s just how I see it.

  29. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Mike, we kicked ourselves in the ass a few times today when we could have put the game away. It wasn’t all about the CLE kicker. He was part of the how the game went down. Why can’t we just accept that? Grow from here. It’s totally possible. 🙂

    • BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

I guess anything is possible, but to be honest I haven’t seen anything this year that gives me hope for the playoffs. I just hope we’re still in it in december.

cinci is favored by 7 on thursday.

  33. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

The upcoming road game in Cincinnati can have yuge playoff ramifications if the Dolphins can pull off a win against a very good team with a stout D and good offense after only three days preperation. We currently sit above the Bungles at #10 in the AFC due to AFC record. If we can get the head to head and another AFC win against them it could mean a lot for a wild card.

  34. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I see good and bad in every phase of the game. So if players clean up their game we get better as a team. I actually think that’s what we’re going to start to see. We have talent. The team is learning itself.

  37. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

After Cinci we have 10 days to get ready for the Titans at home, Steelers at home and the FEST GAME, a bye and the Jet’s at home. This is the section of the season we MUST take advantage of and if we can eek out more wins than not we will be in good contention heading into week 10.

I am checking myself at this point. New offense, new Defense, all new coaches new systems, new language, new team mates etc

Dusted off my patience brigade lapel pin.

    • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

Lol! maybe the 10 days will help us jell a little better on offense and defense. Looking forward to seeing you my friend.

  38. Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

The OL run blocking HAS to improve. I don’t want to hear the Pouncey is out, because I’m not sure he makes that much of a difference. Cleveland had a backup center in there today and gashed us for almost 170 yards, so it’s not like it can’t be done with a backup center. We had three former 1st round picks on the OL today, and it didn’t seem to matter. Can we lure Hudson Houck out of retirement?

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

This team is more resilient than the teams of the past. If they clean some stuff up I think we start seeing wins. We have talent. It flashes everywhere. Need to get the kinks out and be more consistent for 4 quarters.

      • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

They have a lot to clean up Tim. Mental breakdowns on D, poor OL play overall, horrendous run defense, etc.

  39. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

This Bengals game can be a turning point in the season.

    • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

Agreed. 1-3 will be tough to come back from. I really thought we’d lost the game when that kicker was lining up for Cleveland. I was thinking “we are one of the worst teams in the league if we lose this game.”

  40. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I still have the feeling every game in the 4th that we are going to lose…..Doesn’t matter how much time is left or what the score is.

  41. Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

I would have liked to see more of Drake today. I’m not a huge fan of the RB by committee approach. I’m a firm believer that a RB needs reps to get into a groove running the ball. He’s a home run waiting to happen, and the more carries he gets the better the chance of him breaking a long gain.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Really impressed by him today. Dude has some shake and bake in him…..and more tough baller when the time comes than I thought he would.

That drive when Drake got stood up but just kept churning his legs forward until he picked up a first down and then ran to the outside for 11 and anther first down was pretty damn impressive.

  45. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I think the coaching is still feeling out the RB position. We’re not a settled team. We make mistakes at bad times but also show big play potential.

Rock — you gonna be at the Sat nite before the fest game? La Quinta in Hollywood (Brian’s hometown) is where most folks are staying.

  48. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Tim, what I am enjoying watching this year is that Landry, Stills & Parker CAN give you a big play at any minute. When they start doing it consistently for 60 mins we can be very good on offense. Our pass protection has become pretty good even with a back up and backup backup center in. They need to get better at run blocking and Pouncy is actually pretty good down the field at the second level.

  49. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I just kind of watched the game, kind of like fast forward mode. and i think i have come to agree with most, all the dolphins need is a qb to be real sb contenders.

well that is if the qb can play rb, ol, dl, lb and db. just get a qb that can do all that and this team is fucking set.

    • New Age's avatar New Age says:

I kinda agree with FFR. We have a bad QB, RB, OL, DL, LB, and DB. He forgot TE but I’ll go ahead and add that too. We have some good players but the team plays like crap just about every week.

Maybe next week there won’t be giant running lanes, edges will magically be set, and players will figure our who to cover and how. Maybe Tannehill will figure out matching TOs with TDs really isn’t a win and maybe a running game will eventually develop. At least that’s the hope.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

We see really good from all of those positions too. That’s what I think we all see. It’s about playing better consistently for 4 quarters. We have to get some of the kinks out. We have talent across the board.

    Thoughts:

    – I guess I’d rather win ugly than lose ugly.
    – We have a giant gaping hole in the middle of our defense where LBs are supposed to be. It makes it hard to stop the run…and the pass.
    – Jelani Jenkins played one of the worst games I’ve seen a Dolphins LB play in a long time.
    – Tanny looked fantastic…about half the game. Still waiting for a complete game from him this season. At this point, how am I supposed to believe he can put together a string of games of high quality play?
    – Maybe if we put six 1st rd draft picks on the oline, we can open up some holes in the running game.
    – Parker, Landry, and Stills are the best corps of WR we’ve had on the team in a long time.
    – Rashad Jones…nuff said.
    – New HC, new OC, new DC, a bunch of new players. Growing pains are to be expected. We were never going to be SB contenders this year. Hopefully the team will develop in these new systems and we’ll see improvement as the season goes on. Then if we can draft well next year to fill the glaring holes on this team, maybe we can talk playoffs next year. Meanwhile Belicheat and the fucking Pets will be taking home trophies and winning games by 3 scores with 3rd string QBs and makeshift olines on the way to breaking Shula’s win records, smdh.

ok piggy i was being a smart ass in that last comment, i tend to do that now and then. but come on serious, you are worried about an average qb when 90% of he rest of the team is horrible and below average. come on you have way more football knowledge then just to complain about and average qb

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I’m okay with sticking with an average qb
I’m just not okay using our resources to build around an average qb

So that is why I am worried about our direction

It’s more an indictment of the FO than the QB

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

There was a lot of blame to go around, but I saw Jenkins out of position over and over, not filling gaps, being indecisive, and basically getting roasted all over the field. We knew LB was going to be an issue this year. Hopefully we can draft a couple of stud LBs next year.

  71. finfanrob's avatar finfanrob says:

    piggy,

i agree with you. qb is just one part of the team, and the fins have an average qb. he isnt going to go out there and throw for 5000 yards and 40tds, so i am ok with that, but the problem is this team is so bad in all other areas that that is what he needs to do and he just isnt that kind of qb. so i cant really complain about him being something he isnt when no other parts of the team are even as average as he is

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I think he was the worst part in offense

Boulder, that strip sack was not on James. Go back and watch it. He held on to it too long and never once checked the pocket. That’s not his blind side. He saw the pressure, he didn’t move, and he didn’t secure the ball. As much as you may say he should have had more time, you at best could blame the sack on him, the ball security is fully on him. He does that suit ALL THE TIME. they should have pulled his ass as well if they were going to pull James.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

It felt like a long time before the sack

But James was pulled by the coaches in the final drive

So the Coaches may have felt differently

  76. D's avatar D says:

Hewitt let that last BIG run up the middle past him. Alonzo had a play too but it was Hewitt’s gap that he busted through Be right past him

    • D's avatar D says:

Jenkins didn’t play well either. Pretty much suck fest from all the LBs, including our new guy who they put I. One play and he immediately got burned in coverage

  77. D's avatar D says:

Bullshit. You guys keep saying Tanny is average but every one else sucks… Our WRs played well, TEs played well, RBs were pretty good even though they had little chance to catch fire because he rotated them too much. Our OL played well. Tanny was the weak link thus game period.

Defense was bad at CB and LB, but the rest of the D, was on. Too bad this defense is built to rely so heavily on LB and CB.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I don’t think you are wrong

      Sometimes he plays well
      But he played poorly too

I think he was the worst part of the offense
      But we scored 30

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

No matter what happens with the rest of the team, if given the chance the QB must perform when it’s winning time. That strip sack was bush on RTs part. I saw it coming all the way, as did everyone except him. The guy sitting next to me also a Fins fan grew up in Miami, we both said the same thing when it happen, are you kiddin’ me?

It’s funny that the last time I sat in that same seat at this local casino the person next to me was also from Miami, and the same part, SW 69th street area.

It’s about talent, not where someone is drafted. With that said, we have by far the worst LBs in the NFL.

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

The odds of ringing in talent are mug higher if you prioritize the position with higher draft picks

If we somehow signed 3 incredible UDFA LBs in 2015 that no one else new about that would have been a miracle

It’s just not a good plan to develop a good strong unit

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

When we get 8 first round picks I’ll agree with doing that. I think we were planning on taking an LB early, but with the fall of Tunsil it didn’t happen. They thought it wasn’t as big a need as other positions, because of Alonso, and we see they were wrong so far.

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

        It’s not just 2016
        It’s 2015

It’s been a problem for a few years

You don’t need to take one in the first round
        2nd round, 3rd round

Filling out your roster with UDFA is just not a good idea
The LBs are bad bc the FO neglected to bring I talent at the position – it’s that simple

There were a lot of reasons to bbe leave the FO was overestimating Alonso or his impact on the D before the season began

A good FO has to be better than this FO has been

It’s too late now to improve a very bad unit
The talent just isn’t there at LB

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

What do backup UDFA LBs have to do with our starting LBs sucking?

  79. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

This just in, the Bears, Fins, Browns, Bills, Bucs, Skins, jets… all suck.

  80. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I agree with Rob above on RT. Guys like Brady, Cam, and even Big Ben get bailed out all the time by their D. When was the last time our D bailed us out late in a game, by just getting us a stop when we needed it? There’s been some, but few and far between.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

the Steelers and Panthers have spent significant high draft picks on LBs in the last few years
Just those 2 teams: 5 first round LBs since 2012

And they didn’t have 8 first round picks in any round
They just have people in the FO who hose not to neglect a unit

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

You’re kidding right? They chose to upgrade LB instead of at other positions, we went in another direction, you’d need 8 1st rounders to do it at every position. We’ve also had 3 GMs and several coaches the last 4 years, and some cap concerns. How the talent is acquired is irrelevant. I think Seattle haD over 10 make this year’s team.

  82. D's avatar D says:

We need a stud MLB. I don’t care how we get him but that is a position ctgat cannot be adequate for this defense to be good. While defense is built around that player. He has to be 3 down and cover well. Once we get that anchor, we will be a lot better. Kiko isn’t getting it done. As far as olbs we are meg. We need one more guy for sure. We need to replace Misi. He isn’t suited for this D and it’s part of why the unit is off. I think Jenkins would be suitable if he was in there with a better MLB to direct traffic. Still he could be improved upon, but we won’t be able to do the whole unit at once.

CB I think is not good but part of it is they aren’t playing them to their strengths. Why the fuck weren’t they playing press. Maxwell is much better playing press. Howard has looked better in press. But the keep moving away from press. I’d add another student, like Tabor to our unit, let Howard and Tabor battle it out for outside spot, and the other goes to Nicole. Not as ready to give up on these guys as I am the LBs but they need to show up more consistently.

Blog. Terrelle Pryor was giving everything he had, were all the Miami Dolphins? http://miamiherald.typepad.com/dolphins_in_depth/2016/09/terrelle-pryor-was-giving-everything-he-had-where-all-the-miami-dolphins.html

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Obviously not, but we had 2 tough road games to start and played fairly well, but lost, so playing fairly bad and winning…I’ll take it at the end of the day.

I see Jose Fernandez’s crash happened at the jetty on the south end of South Beach, just where I pictured it when they said their boat hit a jetty.

The Stadium looks a lot better than the team that plays it in does

  88. BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

    D,
Yea tanny did hold it long but I guess the coaches thought it was James fault. Did you see the 2nd Tanny INT? Someone hit his hand. WAs that also james guy? Maybe the combination of the 2 plays is the reason he was yanked.

  89. BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

This is not a very good team right now. Right now I would say we’ll be picking in top 10 in 2017 draft.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I agree. The way we play, it’s hard to expect better. If somehow we improve, which is possible, I’ll change my thinking.

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

        its a long season
and a good team gets better each week

        So that might happen
the offense is actually playing well as a whole if they can negate the mistakes/turnovers

the defense is playing really poorly

  90. BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

So I just read that the 2nd INT was also because James let his man hit tanny’s arm when he through it. That’s 2 costly mistakes by james. That’s why he was benched. Definitely seems like James has regressed this year.

  91. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

All true, and I guess we’ll find out if we’re a good team soon enough.

Brandon Marshall & Eric Decker combined for 4 catches for 58 yards, while #Chiefs defenders combined for 6 catches (INTs) for 55 yards & TD.

  93. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

25 rushes for 115 yards and a 4.6 average yesterday. Not bad.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Its coming together in terms of running the ball –
      its takes a little persistence
I don’t think we are likely to see a 200+ yards running the ball game unless we are way ahead

but if you get over 100 on the ground and 300 in the air and 30 points the offense is working

now we have to eliminate the mistakes on offense

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

And it is not just the mistakes, it is whether Tanny is in the zone or not. He plays as good as any QB in the league for long stretches and then for others is just way off.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Only looks worse compared to the Browns 25 rushes for 158 yards and a 6.3 average

      • BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

pryor almost beat the phins by himself. I wish he was on our team.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Hey — the O doesn’t tackle RBs. And keep in mind the run was about the only thing the Browns did.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Actually take that last part back — the Browns were actually pretty even on run v pass. Surprised me to see that, but most of their passes were really just screens and dinks that are pretty much run plays anyhow. Didn’t over ten yards much at all.

  94. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    Steve

    you don’t need 8 1st rounders to draft a LB….lol

Anyone of the picks used on Phillips, Kenny Stills (via trade), Jamil Douglas, Xavier Howard, Drake or Carroo could have been used on a LB

you don’t necessarily need to spend 1st rounders. I would probably not be inclined to take a 1st rounder LB in the last 2 years instead of Tunsil or Parker who appear to be good picks

You can usually find LBs in rounds 2 or 3 and sometimes rounds 4 and 5

but the team definitely chose a direction
and they chose to ignore the position

honestly I don’t even know what you are arguing
You mentioned that the defensive never comes through at crucial times and 3 qbs from teams who have prioritized the position (LB) more than we have

What do you expect of our defense when they are glued together by a lot of guys other teams didn’t want?

  95. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    Boulder

I think a player like Pryor has inflated numbers playing on a team like the Browns
I don’t exactly covet the player
but he is a good weapon that can do a lot of things, especially on a bad team

I like the pieces we have on offense
especially compared to the pieced we have on defense

I just think we need to execute better on offense, eliminate/reduce the mistakes and be more consistent

I think by the time the season ends our total offense is going to have pretty good numbers
but if we don’t clean it up it won’t matter in terms of wins

we can probably get better game to game on offense

on defense I think there are some fundamental issues that will be hard to fix during the season
