Ask Mike – 2016 Season Week 3

Q – So our leading rusher through 3 games is our QB.  That’s not good.  But do you think the RB rotation is also affecting those numbers?  Seems to me that no one is going to get 15+ carries this year.

Oinks

Pigsgerald

There’s no question that the RB rotation has a huge effect on those stats, but so did Gase’s decision to leave a healthy Jay Ajayi home the first week of the season. I think he’s giving all these guys a shot, and why not do it early on? It’s so hard to really gauge what they can do in practice and in the pre season, especially with fewer practices, and the fact that so many of our RB’s weren’t healthy before the season, and we didn’t have Foster, who of course went down himself after game 1.

I don’t have any problem at all how he’s handling the RB’s so far, and I think once he finds the 2 or 3 guys he’s comfortable with, we’ll be seeing lots more of those guys and not much of the others. I do think once he arrives at that decision, which may still be 2-3 games out, whoever those 2 main guys are will see at least 15 carries, or at least one of them will.

My guess is if Foster can’t stay or get healthy, Drake and Ajayi will be the 2 main guys and Pead will be the next guy up. Of course, those 3 guys have to stay healthy in their own right.

Q -Now that you’ve seen 3 games, what’s your updated prediction for Miami’s won-lost record this season? Thank you, again, for all you do for this site.–OD

Call me crazy, and I know you will OD, I’m sticking with my 10-6. We will get things straight, we will improve, and we will play better as a result. Gase, as opposed to the udder guys will not settle for less, and will find the players that will get it done. Most likely, it will be most of the players that are starting right now, but putting them on notice is an intelligent way to let them know they’re accountable for their play, and poor play will not be tolerated.

While watching them struggle against the Browns was as enjoyable as peeling off my eyelids, pouring kosher salt in my eyes, and then staring at the sun for 3 hours straight, I still believe we can be winners. I think Tannehill is going to have a big year, and not just be a stat padder. I think he’s going to help us win games this season, and I think 9 more wins are coming.

Q -Mike,
Sorry it’s not email, but here’s my question:
Give us a good 3 year plan to build a perennial playoff team from what Miami has right now.

One thing for sure is we have to stick with a Head Coach, and give him a chance. I can’t be 100% positive, but I think Adam Gase is the right guy. We need to give him an opportunity to continue with his vision, and allow things to come together. That’s easier said than done, but we can’t continue to purge both the coaching staff and the roster every 2-3 years, it’s like treading water, you spend lots of energy, but you don’t get anywhere.

The next thing we need to do is improve the roster on the defensive side of the ball. We need more talent at CB, find a partner for Xavien Howard to make a solid young CB tandem. We need talent at LB, sure tacklers, smart players that put themselves in the right position to make plays, and ones that can actually make the tackle when they’re there. I think we can upgrade all 3 spots at LB, but that’s hard to do in one draft, but we might be able to find 1 or 2 in the draft.

The next thing I think we should do is think long term, maybe 3 years down the line. Stop trying to find the one player that will put us over the top, because that doesn’t happen in football. We’re far away from just needing one way, I’d rather have 4 talented players than 1 great player. Let’s draft that player, but stop overspending for that player in FA. That’s where I think we’ve gone wrong year after year, always making that one big splash, but as you can see, that hasn’t paid dividends here. Oh, and can we finally draft a really good TE!!!! That’s more than 3, but I had to throw it in there.

Gase is in his place
Draft better, especially on defense
No excessive spending in FA, more specifically, on one player

Q – What are the three best units on this team?

And when I ask that thinking LBs, DEs, DTs, Safeties, Corners, OL (but you can break up), WRs, RBs, TEs, QBs and kickers are units.

stanger

I think right now our safeties, WR’s and DT’s, although the depth is definitely best at WR, with Parker, Landry, Stills, Carroo and Grant. Can’t remember where we’ve had this much talent, and YOUNG talent. Carroo is the youngest at 22, and Stills the oldest at 24. This unit will hopefully grow into something like what the Packers had years ago, when Greg Jennings, Jordy Nelson, Donald Driver and James Jones. It would be nice if Ryan Tannehill also became Aaron Rodgers too, but we can dream, right? I think our ST’s unit is also great, with the exception of K Andrew Franks. He’s not bad necessarily, but I think Darr looks much better than average, and I think Landry and Grant can be the best in the business.
Love the duo of Jones and Abdul-Quddus, Isa has impressed me, and Jones has been for years now. We have to keep these guys together for a while too, so we can get some consistency back there. Draft another stud CB, and we can have a shot at becoming one of the better secondaries in the NFL.

Q – my Question to You is,

How can We stop the run? and When?

We get gashed by RB, over and over and over, even when we KNOW the other team is going to run.  I feel like We cant turn the corner until we can stop the run.

Thanks, David

Unfortunately, the answer isn’t good. I would say 2017, when we start drafting some LB’s, and maybe pick another one up in FA. I think we have the pieces on the D-line to be stout against the run, but DT’s and DE’s don’t usually make the tackles, it’s the other 3 guys of the front 7 that have clean it up, and between Alonso, Misi and Jenkins, they just aren’t getting it done, and are definitely not making the tackles in their gap assignments, rather 5-10 yards down field. That’s just not doing your job correctly, and sometimes when they’re in the right gap, they just aren’t wrapping up. I don’t expect a lot of improvement this year, but it’s possible. Jenkins can’t seem to stay healthy, and Misi either, but maybe 2 other guys step up and start getting it done. Not likely though.

I wasn’t even thinking about the game day post. My bad too. I knew we were playing tonight, just wasn’t thinking of it in regards to the article. Silly me!

  3. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Check this out . . .

Yesterday morning I’m about to leave for work, and I’m in the kitchen, and the garage is right off the kitchen. I hear what sounds kind of like a mixture between a bird and a cat scream. In the house, I can’t tell if it’s coming from the front or the back. Then I go in the garage, and it’s louder, so I figure it must be in the front. I get in my car in the garage and drive to work, forgetting about it.

I get home at about 5:40, and I hear it really loud, but and it almost sounds like it’s in the garage. We both pull our cars out so we can look in the garage, can’t find anything, but now it sounds like it’s outside. My wife had to make a quick trip to her mom’s, so he leaves, and comes back 15 minutes later, and we hear it again. We eat dinner, and then start looking again, and it’s starting to get dark. A neighbor and her boyfriend walk by when the cat or bird starts screaming again, kind of like a hawk, or a cat in distress. They hear it and say where is it coming from, sounds like the car. We open all the doors, the hatch, can’t find it, but we still hear it loud and clear. I’m using a flashlight, looking under the car, can’t find it, but it’s loud like it’s right there.

My neighbor finally sees it, it’s a kitten under the car in the undercarriage. He’s right on top of where the spare tire is located under the car. He won’t come out, and we can’t reach it. As soon as he got close, the kitten would move away, further to the middle of the car. Then it sounds like it’s in the front, so we pop the hood, and there he is in the engine bay, but we can’t reach it. It’s totally able to get out, but we think it’s scared and warm inside the undercarriage, and that’s why it won’t come out. We called animal control, and a really nice girl comes out, but she can’t get it, because it kept moving from the back of the car to the front, always outside reach. We put food out in a bowl inn a box for the cat, with milk, hoping it would come out and eat, it didn’t.

This morning, as I was going to my car, I didn’t hear the kitten, so I figured it’s either gone or worse, dead. I walk outside, and sure enough, I hear it loud and clear, but it’s now across the street. Not sure if it was under someone else’s car, but I’m glad it’s out of ours! Crazy shit!

  14. Randy's avatar Randy says:

This game will come down to whether or not we can stop their running backs. If we can’t, it’s gonna be a long night. If they can make us bring our safeties up, they have the players to hurt us deep. I’d like to see our coaching staff actually do something to impact the game. Do something different. Think outside the box. Take away what they do best. Something. This coaching staff hasn’t done much schematically to impact games. I see the same old shit….and no significant adjustments in game or week to week.
    ***
And, you bench an OL for two “bad” plays but leave your QB in who has several? Double standard for the pretty boys. But no…you can’t bench a QB…that’s sacrilege. If Tannehill actually had even rudimentary pocket awareness neither of those plays would have happened…but yeah…bench James. Genius. Tannehill sucks at reading a defense…going thru his progressions…and actually reading where the pressure is coming pre-snap and/or feeling pressure as the play develops. It’s not toughness to stand in the pocket like a statue and do nothing to avoid pressure. He’s already responsible for about half a dozen sacks. I’d be getting sick and tired of it if I was one of his OL. He does nothing to make his OL’s job easier. He makes their job harder. They have no room for error playing in front of this guy. Call me a hater if you like, but I keep seeing the same shit over and over.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Oh geez. We’ve only allowed 6 sacks this year so I guess they’re all on Tannehill. Yeah he never escapes the pocket and bails out the OL. Nope never. So when he does do that multiple times I’m not really seeing that. LOL

Our run defense and run offense are our biggest issues right now. But you keep blaming one guy. 😉

  15. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Hopefully the Phins who were not overly happy with their performance against the Browns even though they won will motivate them to really ball tonight. Hope so! LOL

  16. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Tim,
Huh….I may or may not have chosen that number at random.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I’ll say this, I bet you if we start to play better run defense and run the ball better we start looking like a much better team. I know that’s kind of elementary but it’s true. It helps with complementary football and opens up our passing game and our pass rush. If those two areas don’t get better not much is going to change with this team.

For the record I’ve seen progress in our pass pro and I’m not blaming them for everything but it wasn’t good in the SEA game. We were pressured on almost 50% of our pass attempts which lead the league week one. NE got some pressure on us but no sacks and we allowed just 1 last week but that one caused the fumble.

James wasn’t benched because of 2 plays, he was benched because of ongoing issues since week one and Gase had enough and sent a message. Which I like. There hasn’t been a point this season to bench Tannehill.

  17. son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

Cincy has a horrible record in prime time with Dalton. They’ve run the league low least amount of plays this year with a lead and are struggling in the red zone. We need to solid tonight and we can beat them. Stopping the run is key, getting a lead will help the defense.

  18. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    son,
With the issues on our OL, another key will be whether or not we can handle inside pressure. I’d look for a lot of plays to the edge. I don’t see us having a lot of success running up inside with Burfict back. Run some misdirection stuff and take advantage of his aggressiveness in his first game back.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I expect to see more bootlegs and roll-outs tonight. I do hope we try to run more though. Even if only 2-3 yards. It’s when it becomes 0 and – yards that you can’t keep going to it. We’ve gotta start getting more push up front in the running game but we’re already banged up at C with Steen now dealing with a high ankle sprain and Pouncey out. So Urbik might have to start or play at some point. But he didn’t look bad when he came in so hopefully he can do the job if called on.

    • son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

Drake has great speed to the outside. It’d be nice to see go crazy.
Williams looked really good catching passes in the flats last week.

  19. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    son,
I also don’t think it’s just stopping the run. I think it’s also stopping Bernard out of the backfield catching passes. Our edge defenders need to play much better disciplined football than they have so far.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Agreed, discipline is an issue and VJ spoke about it. He said we preach attack attack attack but we still need to play blocks better when it’s a run and we have not been doing that nearly enough.

    Tim,
Sometimes this game seems complicated. But, defensively, it almost always comes down to one thing: gap responsibility. Everything starts there. If that’s not sound, everything else falls apart.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Absolutely and that’s why everyone is ragging on the LBs. Our DL has vacated gap responsibility rushing the passer and then the opponent counters it with a run and there are huge gaps instead of smaller ones where the LBs can make the play. VJ said this as well.

  25. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

So I’ve posted this before but I’ll reiterate these stats. We’re now 2-15 when RT throws either 36 or 37 times per game, I forget which one. I did the research last year. The Pats game was the latest one even though we got back into it and had a chance late but still fell short.

I was listening to Mike Francesa with Brian Billick who he has on every week during the football season and he threw out a stat about Cam Newton. When he passes 35 times or more the Panthers are 7-16. The Panthers had that great season last year because they ran the ball well along with Cam as a part of that, and their defense lead the league in turnovers giving the offense the ball back over and over and in good field position. They then passed off of that. When that doesn’t happen they’re not the same team even with Cam.

It just goes to show you, if you don’t play well in all phases it doesn’t matter who you have at QB. Drew Brees still puts up big numbers but the Saints defense is bad and they’re 0-3.

I am expecting some big chunk yard plays to be given up by our D while their Oline allows our DT’s to run up the field toward the QB while their running back is running past them and our LB’s.

I guess so, but I might take a break from it for a while, read some other genres to switch it up. I’m in the middle of reading Baldacci’s 2nd book in the Amos Decker series. First book was really good, 2nd one is good, but not quite as good as the 1st.

I like Lippett. We need somebody to get a INT. Maybe Hewitt can get one. Or Phillips can swallow one and rumble for some quality yards. I feel an erratic night for Dalton coming on.

Brandon Albert will not start because of ankle injured on winning TD run last week. Tunsil will move over to LT and Billy Turner starts at LG.

My five keys to the game tonight….

    1. Gase needs to be more aggressive, especially in the first half.
    2. QB play has to improve
    3. WR play has to improve
    4. RB play has to improve
    5. OL has to be much more productive
    6. DL has to dominate
    7. LB play has to better
    8. DB’s have to tighten up coverage and be a force in the running game
    9. Tackling has to be much better
    10. Special Teams needs to be lights out.

MIKE E.–MIKE — Yes, you’re correct in predicting I will disagree with your 10-6 prediction for the Fins this season. Tonite’s band-aid O-Line, lacking quality depth, will eventually crumble. And Tannehill will pay the price. 2016 will NOT see the Fins break the .500 mark for yet another year. Now I sure hope YOU’RE RIGHT AND I’M WRONG. –I hope Tannenbaum has stacked this team with plenty of studs —- NOT PLENTY OF DUDS!!
