The Porcine Oddyssey #103: A Simulation

Pigsgerald Bacon has agreed to participate in a simulation.  Today Piggy will be helping us demonstrate pocket awareness.  Specifically the pocket awareness of our very own quarterback – Ryan Tannehill.

To appreciate the authenticity of the simulation – Piggy will be wearing a blindfold

blidfoldpiggy

That way Piggy will have no idea what is going on around him!

and we made some last minute additions to the simulation that Piggy does not know about

Like adding a trap door right below Piggy…

closed-trap-door

So imagine that Ryan Tannehill is standing in the pocket..if there is a pocket

And suddenly something unexpected happens so the play doesn’t go as planned

To simulate this…the trap door opens…

fallthroughdoor

Now the blindfolded Piggy has no idea what is around him

In this case, we have a room full of hungry crocodiles to simulate the rushing defensive players coming at Ryan Tannehill

piggycrocodiles1

Look at Piggy Panic!

Look familiar?

Miami Dolphins v Cincinnati Bengals

Ryan Tannehill has been sacked 195 times in his career

He’s under pressure a lot more than that

He’s had a horrible offensive line

No run game

Some very predictable play calling

stripsack2

But some think he holds the ball too long

And he doesn’t seem to move very well in the pocket.

He has no sense of the rush around him.

And the result is 41 fumbles in 68 games

stripsack3

Fixing this might be Adam Gase’s biggest challenge

Can it be taught?

Gase seems to think so he recently sighted to helping Jay Cutler with this when he worked with Jay Cutler.

If it is fixed, it might just save the season for the Dolphins.

Okay Piggy…I think I made my point.  Let me help you out of there

handreachingfor-trotter

Oh wait…we aren’t done with the simulation

to simulate the Dolphins breaking the heart of Dolfans, we will simply pull our hand away while Piggy reaches

and watch him drop to the crocodile pit again

piggycrocodiles2

Did we tell you we named all the crocodiles Geno Atkins to make this as realistic as possible?

…Well looks like Piggy made it out of the crocodile pit trap door!

Can the Dolphins make it out of this 1-3 hole?

A tired pig resting on a muddy surface

I’m not up to reading the article in the middle of a late night discussion. Sorry Piggy, I’ll check back tomorrow.

D, I think you haven’t read much of what I’ve said the last few days and you think I’m defending Tannehill. I’m totally bummed with his performance and demeanor and think it translates throughout the team. But also not doing your job at many other positions is a problem.

  2. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Luck was sacked 6x today….I guess he holds the ball too long and has no pocket presence.

  3. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

    James Winston had a 40 QBR today…..it’s a tough game…lol

  4. found a LB who I feel can help upgrade our LB corps:
Calvin Munson, OLB, San Diego State
He’s currently projected 6th rd on CBSSports NFLDraftScout but I’ll bet that’s something that changes drastically before the draft arrives. He’s probably not that well know at this time but he’s got a non-stop motor and nice size at 6’1″, 240 lbs. he moves extremely well to the ball and he’s one of those guys who’s off in the right direction when he recognizes the play; which is usually pretty quick. He’s also a versatile 3 down guy who can cover and he can rush the passer. they use him off the edge and on blitzes up the middle.
Keep an eye on this kid because before the draft arrives you’ll probably be hearing more about him.

  5. D's avatar D says:

Actually GDP, he does or did in that game. I was watching and thinking to myself man the first round QBs in that draft all are turning out to be duds. He makes a lot of the same mistakes Tanny does. How does comparing him to another failing QB make your case?

    • only failing first rd qb I care about is ours. I don’t care about anyone else’s because I don’t root for those other teams.
I cringed when we took tannehill and have been cringing ever since. knew it was going to be a long four years but I never imagined I’d have to put up with him in year five because I didn’t think we’d be stupid enough to re-sign him. dammit!!

  6. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Most O-lines stink!! That’s why. It’s hard to play QB in this league with OL coming in totally unprepared for the NFL. It’s been a 5+ year problem due to the college game. Many former personnel people and coaches have spoke about it. The quality of football is lacking early on regardless of talent.

So before I get accused of defending Tannehill, this goes for the entire league and what I’m seeing. 🙂

  7. Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

    Tim,
The difference is most O-lines do ONE thing well, whether that be run blocking or pass blocking- we do neither. It’s mind boggling to me that we haven’t been able to do one of those correctly in the last I don’t know how many years. Maybe the talent is as good as we think it is on the OL, despite their lofty draft status. I would have changes the OL this week and switched Tunsil for Albert. Maybe they are waiting to see what it looks like with Pouncey in there, but IMO he’
    s a bit overrated.

  8. Didn’t want to start this early but making up my draft list already and I actually included a couple guys I didn’t think we’d have a shot at:
    DE’s
    Myles Garrett
    Charles Harris
    Derek Barnett
    LB’s
    Reuben Foster
    Zach Cunningham
    Jarrad Davis
    Calvin Munson
    S
    Jabril Peppers
    OL
    Adam Bisnowaty
    Dorian Johnson
    Pat Elfein
    Ethan Pocic
    RB
    Samaje Perin
    James Conner

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

      You really like Reuben Foster?

I think he looks good too
Probably an early pick (days 1 or 2)
There will be other LBs available but he might be a difference maker

Peppers has a lot of positive press as well

  9. New Age's avatar New Age says:

Im not going into draft mode this early but I agree with Tim. The next four games will say a lot and the whole team looks bad. Fede should be dumped. Mario has been bad. Wake isn’t in the game often, that OL of 1st rounders is always hurt, our CBs need experience, Alonso is our only healthy solid LB(HOW?! lol). Parker is disappointing and our QB…enough said lol.

A ;lot of this can be fixed but we will see if it will be fixed. We really need LBs, DEs, and maybe a QB and CB next draft lol. I see some good but Im tired of us keeping injury prone players and getting injury prone vets in FA. Let’s get Albert, Foster, Cameron. We already have broken Misi, Parker, and Pouncey. Do any of those 6 every stay healthy past a few games now?

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

      Mostly I agree
I don’t think Parker is disappointing

He’s on course after missing not 1 game for over 50 catches and 700 yards

      Sure it’s not 1000 and 100 catches
But with the volume Landry is targeted, he’s doing alright

      It’s early
But Parker, Ajayi and Drake get away with slow starts IMO
And neither is a focal point of the offense

Over he course of the year I hope we target Landry less
And spread the ball more to Parker and Stills and even Caroo
But early on, I don’t think it’s crazy to rely on Landry who has proven to be a reliable target

I’m okay with that aspect of the offense

  10. BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

I was a tanny supporter but after what I’ve seen from him the last 2 game I think we need to invest a high draft pick in 17 on a QB. He just doesn’t have it.
2 passes the last game showed exactly why tanny is not the answer. 3rd and 1 over throw to gray and the INT at the end of the game when we still had a chance.

Those passes where he wasn’t under pressure should be completed by a 5th year supposed franchise QB.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I’m not sure we have to prioritize QB next year even if Tanny never gets Better

I would probably bring in some competition

Guys like Russell Wilson, Garoppolo, and Dak Prescott are not 1st rounders

Plus Tanny may have been really bad the last 2 games

But I bet he is better before the season is done with familiarity in this offense

I just don’t think he is a franchise QB

I would rather build up the team and bring in competition for him than to say “move on”

If we get high draft compensation it’s worth considering

      • BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

I never said move on. We do exactly what the Eagles did with bradford. They draft a QB and then waited for the right deal to move bradford, once they were comfortable with Wentz.

  11. BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

If Ross really wanted to win with tanny then he should have hired a defensive coach that would make his team play good defense and real commitment to run. Instead Ross hired coaches that build offenses around peyton manning and aaron rodgers. Sorry that’s not tanny and it’ll never be tanny. I would trade him to a team that has a coach like zimmer, or rex ryan.

    Boulder,
    It’s funny how coaching works.
Bill Cowher was discussing the Jets-Seattle game and was saying that when an O is struggling; specifically when the QB is struggling, he always went run heavy as much as possible because the main important thing to him was avoiding turnovers always.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

      Interesting

I really wouldn’t be surprised if we run he ball 30+ times in the next couple of games

The important thing is – don’t fall behind

  15. Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

  18. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Pig — your analogy of what it is like to be a QB in the pocket is a good one. I might go with blinders (even that a horse thing) rather than the full blind fold but unseen dangers everywhere. Part of why it is the toughest jobs in the NFL.

Unfortunately Tanny doesn’t have the eyes in the back of the head thing going like Marino did, but he at least this year has gotten better at throwing it away when he should instead of taking the sack.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

i think the QB position is 2nd nature to a lot of QBs

And it doesn’t feel like it’s 2nd nature to Tanny

It doesn’t feel like he is learning the NFL (he should be in year 5) it feels like he is learning the position

  19. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    I hear you Boulder

I think though we have to be prepared for Tannehill to be the QB in ’17 as well

I don’t know that we draft a QB with a very high pick unless we trade Tannehill
I just think we stop treating him like he is the golden child
Like he deserves to be one of the highest paid players in the team, like he can’t be benched when he messes up or like he is above competition

If I’m looking to pay another player
I might look to Tannehill to take a pay cut

    I’m frustrated watching Tannehill too
And we can’t avoid watching him bc he touches the ball on every offensive snap so that heightens the criticism

But I don’t want to blow everything up
I want to bring in talent through the draft and to a degree through free agency

I think k we hurt ourselves by constantly discarding players we are frustrated with

If we just bring in as much talent as possible and we let those best talent rise to the top – we will be fine

Despite Tannehill’s play I think we might still be gearing up for a heavy defensive draft

You can build a good defense around Suh and Jones
And we have a couple of young players in Howard and Phillips to work with

Even Alonso can be a workable piece

  20. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Cameron being out is practically irrelevant

    what a shitty signing!

    I wish we had Clay
    51 catches last year

    • BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

I’ve been saying this for a while Signing Cameron instead of clay last year was one of the dumbest moves I’ve seen this org make. What did we gain by that? Its not like we couldn’t pay clay.

  21. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    Poor Bene

Late round draft pick expected to replace Norman and cover Julio Jones

    What a nightmare

  22. BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

    piggy,
I wouldn’t be surprised if Moore took more than usual first team snaps this week. Tanny needs to be on notice. Also I wouldn’t be surprised if Gase wants to draft his own QB. He has no loyalty to Tanny. So I’m not gonna say we won’t draft QB high in 2017. It really depends on how we finish the season and where we pick.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I think we are living a lie to think this offense can be more productive with either Moore or Doughty (at least Doughty right now)

And although I can appreciate putting Tanny on notice – and we’ve seen Gase do it to other players, I don’t think the issue with Tanny is a lack of motivation or anything mental that needs to change

he is just not very natural in the pocket
and that makes him a much worse QB than he could be

So how does he get there or will he ever get there are the 2 issues we need to solve?
      (Piggy shrugs at the solution)

Maybe we see Gase roll him out a little more vs Tennessee
I don’t love it – bc I don’t think you can run an offense that way but maybe Gase emphasizes his strengths as part of the gameplan – IMO that’s only temporary relief

      but we need the win

so maybe we see a lot of Tanny on the move, Tanny in the read option, and a heavy does of running the ball in the next game (30+ carries)
and not a lot of Tannehill in the pocket

teams are gonna take it away if we rely on that
but I think to squeeze out some wins and squeeze out some points it can work

I wouldn’t bench Tannehill before the game
but if he turns the ball over during the course of the game – then maybe I would

that would probably be my approach for now while I search for a long term solution if I was Gase

  23. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Not so bene

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

      LOL

He’s actually in his 3rd year
and he is their answer for replacing Norman….oops

Norman was a late round pick as was Richard Sherman
so it works sometimes with shutdown cbs

but so far not so good with bene

  24. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I don’t take a lot of strong stands, but I was very against signing Cameron from the get-go. He’s LOW impact all the way. He’s done nothing since he’s been here, as useless as a third nipple.

  25. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I think last season proved you don’t have to have the best QB to win in the nFL, and in fact, win the SB. We got better QB play w/Tannehill than Peyton Manning gave the Broncos, but they had a more complete team, with a solid rushing attack, and the leagues best defense. We can win like that too, but we don’t run with the ball and our defense rarely shows up in crunch time, just like our QB. Both are absent with the chips fall. Tannehill has been a middle of the road QB for his entire career, very rarely has he been worse than that, but for some, that just doesn’t cut it. It’s very narrow-minded IMO, but it is what it is.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

This is exactly why I am so perplexed with our offseason which seemed to be more about building a high octane passing game

than what we can do with the sum of our current parts

I wanted to keep Miller, give him a lot more carries
and bring in young defenders to surround around Suh and Jones

I don’t regret the Tunsil pick
      and Howard fits the mold

but I think we were lying to ourselves with that Alonso and Maxwell pickup – we would have been better served with draft picks than shitty vets who were “instant starters” and we got really derailed in the 3rd round

we could have drafted LBs and DBs there that could have at least pushed for playing time

  26. finfanrob's avatar finfanrob says:

‘We can win like that too, but we don’t run with the ball and our defense rarely shows up in crunch time, just like our QB. Both are absent with the chips fall.’

I agree with that for everything but this year. the qb did show up in crunch time at the end of the seahawks and cheats game. it was the def that disappeared. not that it makes tanny anything more then an ok qb but he did show up at the end of those two games this year

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

He definately showed up in the Patriots game
We really can’t ask anything more than him that that

I’m not sure you can argue that about the Seahawks game albeit you can definatley argue the defense folding when we needed them

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

True Rob, I said that myself, but that was rare for him. He did put us in position to win, but the narrow-minded will say his early failures caused the defense to be tired out. It’s all a bunch of crap. Narrow-minded garbage. I’m so tired of it, I can’t even tell you. It’s like unless you hate Tannehill, you can’t have any idea that he’s an average QB with poor pocket presence, and so far hasn’t shown the ability to lead his team to victory at the end of games. We can’t see any of his limitations, we think he’s just the bees knees. I also know the kid is working hard to improve, he always has, he plays every game, no matter how banged up he is, he hangs in there, and maybe just maybe, everything clicks. If you don’t think that’s possible, it’s time to put practice squad hero Brandon Doughty in for the rest of the season. unfuckingbelievable!

  31. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    Ken

the last thing we should do is blow it up

we should build off what we do have IMO

I think blowing it up is just to keep fans happy temporarily
and then we are starting from scratch again and waiting to see who fails and succeeds
and at best we end up being average

When I watch the good teams I see they stick with their talent through thick and thin
The Panthers stuck with veteran Thomas Davis through a lot of bad years and now he is huge for them (or at least in 2015)

the Falcons stuck with Matt Ryan for the last couple of years and he is probably the league MVP for the first qtr of the year

You really have to build off success and not react to failure

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Totally agree. Build around the talent you have, try to keep a system in place for some time, and get the right people in that work well with the system you want to run. We have let Gase build the team he wants.

  32. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Piggy

Lamar Miller is only averaging 3.8YPC, not bad, but way off his lofty average when he was getting 15 carries a game. Now averaging 23 carries a game, I guess we can see his limitations as he gets to 20 or more. He also has ZERO TD’s, and his longest run of the season so far is 15 yards. Doesn’t seem especially elite to me.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

This kind of comparison does nothing for me

the issue is we had to think about replacing him in the draft
which took us away from adding another quality player

Do you really think if we had Miller on our roster now he would not have performed better than the guys we currently have?

it took 4 games for some one to surpass our QB in rushing yards
whereas Miller would have opened the year as starter and given us stability from out of the gate instead of what ended up happening at the position at RB

      Maybe he is not elite
but building a team takes a certain amount of stability and that is what Mille roffered us instead of devolving into the unknown at RB

when you have an elite QB you can probably afford to let a good rb go – but instead we end up having questions at two spots

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Miller and Zeke are the 2 backs getting the most carries per game, that’s why Miller has 351 yards, but he’s not doing a lot though. Very pedestrian numbers man. Certainly nothing that makes me feel like “If we only had Lamar Miller”.

  33. finfanrob's avatar finfanrob says:

    piggy and mike

first i completely disagree with the bs of ‘the qb pulled the game out’ i find it all a joke. it takes a whole team to win a game and not just the qb completing some passes towards the end of the game during a game winning drive.

did carr pull out that game yesterday…….aahhhh i am pretty sure the raiders def had to go back on the field to hold the ravens. so maybe the d pulled out the game…..either way it is all bs.

i just find this pure hatred of tanny some have on here funny how narrow minded they look at this god awful team and football in general

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Fans hate on players all the time. The QB position is no different. I don’t think its easy to argue that Tannehill is a good QB right now. No one defends other players like they defend Tanny and that ends up increasing the venon in the debate. But that’s a chicken and the egg argument.

Whether or not the defense is good or bad does not make Tanny good or bad. In my view.

The Ravens/Radiers game is a good analogy and I agree with the point you have made. Its not JUST on the QB. It does take a complete game from anyone most of the time or at least it takes your defense to come through some of the time in the clutch

but most NFL games are a few plays away from wins and the final drive ends up being a huge factors. So your QB needs to answer the bell consistently and that is what separates the good qbs in the league from the rest and often makes a difference between a playoff contender and one that is not.

If we had a potent offense and a bad defense I will feel better about our chances to be a contender sooner rather than later

but with both flubbing – I am left thinking, “why have we made the moves we have made”?

and that takes me to the belief that Tannehill is a franchise QB, which he is not IMO

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Is Newton really a franchise QB? Does one year a franchise QB make? He was no better or worse than Tannehill for parts of his career.

  34. Ken's avatar Ken says:

Build off of what? An overpriced DL? A few good WRs? One promising LT? Ain’t enough to build around. Burn the fucker down and Tannenbaum with it

  35. Ken's avatar Ken says:

I see no reason to build around any of these gutless, heartless and emotionless bunch of losers on this roster. Blow this shit stye up!

  36. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Piggy

I don’t think we’d be any better with Miller, really and truly. We haven’t committed to running the ball at all, and I really don’t think it’s because of a lack of talent.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

It’s not only the draft Piggy, it’s paying too much for an average RB. Miller is getting his chance, and he’s been unimpressive so far. 93 rushes and nothing longer than 15 yards, and no TD’s. Big deal.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

think its bc we are behind in games like the Patriots game and even the Browns game early

      But I agree
that’s no different than last year

I think its more about the need to draft a player like Drake which did not need to be a need

I though our offseason was head scratching

  37. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I’d sooner say if only we rushed one of our RB’s, or even all of them combined 25 times per game, than say if only we had Miller.

  38. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Ken

Now you hit on something I can agree with. I’d axe Mr. T in a millisecond. I don’t like what he’s about, and I hate that he has the reins, but we’re going to have live with it. This is one thing that OD is right about. Ross likes Mr. T, and IMO, that’s bad for the Dolphins.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Yeah well I can’t say any of this is wrong

and I do think OD has made a lot of points about Ross that are worth considering
except that I don’t like to spend too much time talking about ownership

for what its worth I don’t think a new GM is blowing it up
I think blowing it up is more about what we see on the field

You can change executives somewhat seamlessly but you have to pick the right one who hopefully doesn’t have his hand on the button

If you pick another Parcells czar that tears the thing down from the inside out, Its blowing it up

it really depends on the GM

  39. Ken's avatar Ken says:

    Piggy:
I get tired of every year thinking we have something to build around on this roster. I am tired of thinking every year we are a couple of players away from respectability. We’re not

  40. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Piggy

We were down 21 points before Tanny even had a chance to screw everything up. The defense didn’t show up that game.

  41. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    Mike

    come on Newton vs Tannehill
    its really not even close

Newton has proven to be MVP material
I actually think Matt Ryan has proven to be that as well
and he has had some down moments

Tannehill has yet to hit anywhere near those peaks
and he can’t, bc he can’t hide his weaknesses

If Tannehill had a season like Newton did last year he would be able to coast through the next 5 years without scrunity from me

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

MVP material for one season. The rest, not so much. It’s all there to see, go look at it.

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

        I’ve seen his stats
I take them in a millisecond

I don’t understand why you always digress into a” Cam Newton isn’t so good argument” like it has anything to do with the Dolphins

If a talking head on a National Network said Tannehill was better or the same than either Luck or Newton – they would be laughed off the stage

its a ridiculous position that I keep hearing Dolfans make

Tannehill is at least one tier below those guys

good player shave ups and downs
bad players have some up and too many downs

You guys realize you are comparing Tannehill to good QBs having their down times

If every time a good QB has a misstep we compare him to Tannehill – that means that Tannehill is not very good. Wake me up when we compare Tannehill to a QB who is having a good year.

I’m not going to fall for the argument that Tannehill can be as good as QBs at their best bc he is as bad as QBs at their worst

In order to get some kind of enjoyment out of watching these games, I am going to focus my efforts on enjoying the games they win, and forgetting about the ones they lose. I cannot afford to emotionally invest in the losses anymore, because there really is nothing I can do about it..LOL

If the QB sucks…fix it, if the LBs suck…fix it, if the OL or DL sucks…fix them, if the play calling sucks…fix it, if the GM sucks, fix it……I actually am not smart enough to know what the problem has been for the last 30 years, but it is too depressing to think about, and I have no control over it anyway….I am just going to enjoy the fun and entertainment a win brings, and sometimes even losses, when they are good games.

immediately after the patriots game I blamed the defense
I was very impressed by Tanny in that game
we almost won base don his performance in spite of the defense
it was a slow start but it irrelevant at the end of the day \the entire game was bad by our defense
and all we had to do was slow down a 3rd string QB in the 2nd half and we could not
I’ve actually said this ALOT in the past few weeks

you are way off in what you are discussing

Its just not anywhere near what I have said or ever said.

I recognize our defense is bad
Our QB is also not very good

One does not cancel out the other

but our defense being bad has nothing to do with anything I’ve said today

I wanted to add defense last offseason
I want to add it this offseason
I think our personel on defense is very bad, with the exception of a couple of very good players

none of that makes me think Tannehill is a good QB

  50. New Age's avatar New Age says:

    Piggy,

Im disappointed in Parker because he’ rarely healthy. He may also run lackluster routes, The guy seems like a part time player and how will we ever focus on a guy that isn’t doing all he can to get to that point? Elite talent but will he ever stay healthy and motivated?

I agree with Piggy. Miller may not be elite this year but his money asked was very affordable and Tannehill was used to him. He’s a hell of a lot better than Foster sitting at home every week or the RB by committee approach. Keep your young, good talent and build on it. Don’t draft another darn RB early because you said the position isn’t worth the money? That’s incredibly stupid. Draft picks are worth more than a few million dollars.

Defense needed adjustments too so Im not going to be too hard on them. They played fantastic run D this week and we all knew young CBs were a weakness. Doesn’t mean this past week wasn’t all on the offense . The RBs did their job. The OL was average at best and we can’t keep any of these stay puffs healthy. Tannehill had some glaring faults this week. Often repeated faults that do diminish hope he will improve. His lack of 3rd down conversions destroyed us this week. The OC mentioned it, the talking heads mentioned it, and it’s just a fact. Your QB has to convert those third downs unless you are ripping off huge chunks of running yards which we are not built to do yet. If you aren’t on the field(and we haven’t been in any game), then you cant score. You can’t get those running yards. You cant keep the D fresh. We need more drives and less 3 and outs.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

poor route running from a rookie is nothing unexpected or new

Its possible that that injury issue is a thing of the pass

generally just too early to judge

      • New Age's avatar New Age says:

Yeah, it’s early but he just hasn’t shown much. A few hints here and there but the truly elite guys were banging it out as rookies. He can’t even stay healthy.

  51. BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

I can’t believe people are actually saying trade tanny for cutler LOL.

  52. New Age's avatar New Age says:

Im also going to repeat something I heard from some talking heads that makes perfect sense. They were talking about the “Manning/ Dilfer” outlier and how false it is. That all these people use an incredibly rare event as a hope outlet that really isn’t the least bit realistic. Two teams in the past 25 years had a bad QB and won the SB? Shouldn’t we be trying to do it the more frequent way? Also, they mentioned these QBs did not turn the ball over especially when it counted. Tannehill is turning it over almost faster than he is scoring. We will not get in the playoffs with a turnover prone QB. Either he fixes this, or he does need to be replaced for a true Alex Smith type or someone with higher potential to ‘get’ the position. As Piggy said earlier, Tannehill looks like he is trying to learn the position instead of trying to learn NFL speed. It’s a huge difference especially this late in his career.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I think we are probably closer to building a gods defense than finding a franchise QB

      And you can do that
And then bring in a guy

We can probably switch to a team that runs more often until we find our guy

I don’t think we need to terminate our relationship with Tanny and draft a QB in the first round
I think we can take a different approach than we did in 2012

We don’t have to be desperate to find out guy
And we don’t have to say Tannehill is hopeless either

So I would focus on making the defense better in the short term

      • New Age's avatar New Age says:

I agree. He’s here for sure next year so we really need to get those difference makers like Carolina did that one year. A top LB and DE prospect, another CB just to have him, and then just fill in other holes. We are so weak in a few places and Wake and Mario and place holders now. Get the replacements now while we still have time. Our FO is so poor at fixing issues before they become issues. No foresight at all. It’s really bad.

  53. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    Lol Boulder

Mando is probably right in his response

    That is just pundit fodder

    Bc Tanny has played poorly
And bc Gase has worked with Cutler before and probably got the best out of cutler

But I don’t think there is even a remote chance it happens
I don’t think they trade Tannehill before Nov 1 either

There is always crazy talk out there I guess

This One is not based on any insider information

In fact Mandos response pretty much nails it

here is another way to get some enjoyment out of your gameday experience

Funny you should say that, because that is pretty close to how it is for me on game day, just imagine those as Captain Morgan pint mixers and it is really close. Plus the place I go watch the games is called “Gameday”

  55. New Age's avatar New Age says:

Probably our biggest issue is a bad FO. They never fix issues ahead of time and never really fix bigger issues. Why in the world are we weak at CB, LB, and OG still?!! They have zero foresight and they always look for the flash instead of the true problems.

Does anyone have faith they target a top LB, or DE this draft? That we get replacement for Wake, Mario, or our poor injury prone LBs this upcoming draft? I don’t have faith even though they are glaring issues. Add in TE to the mix. We need someone early in the second or third to be difference makers. Will we draft a CB even though they are always a need? Never can have too many?

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I really don’t get our last offseason

I think they were looking to have a few things magically fix themselves

The FO is definately the most deserving of criticism IMO

    New Age,
Best thing I ever heard a GM speak to on how to build a team was bill polian on the subject matter.
He basically said that unless you are in position to draft an elite QB outright; do not bother chasing after a great QB in the draft (e.g. trading away picks) or shelling out a fortune in the FA for one. He said you build strength on D, add some weapons around the QB and then you will luck (no pun intended) into a QB situation with a team already built around the position like what Denver did when they had an opportunity to get Manning (the team was highly attractive to him and made it easy to choose over Miami if it were even an option).

    My $.02;

Defense needs to get off the field on 3rd down and offense needs better 3rd down efficiency. At one point Cinncinati had like 3x the number of offensive plays as us. You’re not going to win that way and your defense is going to be gassed before halftime.

No excuses, we’ve been a bad football team in it’s entirety. I don’t honestly know if Tannehill has the goods or not because he has a new offense every year and his OL has pretty much shit the bed every season. That said, I don’t see the point in trying to throw all the shit at him. The whole team needs to stand in front of the fan, because they’re bad as a team. If Tannehill doesn’t get it right by the end of this year, I’m sure the organization will move on, so that problem will take care of itself one way or another.

Sadly, I believe we are no closer to a winning season this year than we were last season. Or the season before. Or the season before that. This will be the 8th consecutive non-winning season under the ownership of Steve Ross. Ross has consistently picked the WRONG PEOPLE to lead this franchise, especially in the front office. Maybe, some day, he’ll make a terrific hire. Per ESPN, Big Ben’s QBR last night was 98.7 out of 100 (50 is average). Tannehill’s total QBR vs. Cincy was 29th in the NFL (something like 16 or 18 out of 100). O-Line lack of quality depth means our QB’s have little chance to succeed. Thanks for NOTHING, Tannenbaum!!
