Bye Week Bi Babe Edition

Well amongst very lows and some recent highs our Dolphins have reached the bye week of the 2016 season with a chance to make some noise as they prepare to make a playoff run. The season started slow with heartbreakingAndy Dalton, Ryan Tannehill crushing losses to Seattle and new England, followed by a squeaked out win over the hapless Browns. The lowest of the low points occurred following that Browns win by looking horrible in a drubbing by the Titans and a no show in orange loss to the Bengals on Thursday night. The Titans whooped the Dolphins in every phase of the game causing fans to surrender the season. They contemplated the next draft, questioned new coach Adam Gase, traded quarterback Ryan Tannehill and any other fin who could bring a decent draft pick. It had us all, as fans, feeling like nothing changed from previous years and that we were in for a very long season. 1-4 looking bad.

Then it happened.

Week 6 brought the Steelers to the newly renovated Hard Rock Stadium, the second of four straight Dolphin home games, and the fan base in total despair.hard-rock-stadium-1000-aug-23 This would be the knock-out punch that confirmed everything the Titans game had shown us the week prior. Adam Gase and the Dolphins had other plans, thankfully. Gase escorted three offensive (very offensive) linemen out the door, having had enough of their failures. His starting 5 Linemen from early in the off season were poised to play together for the first time in the season. Jay Ajayi became the major benefactor as he intoduced himself to the country by rushing over and stomping the Steelers with over 200 yards rushing. A glimmer of hope emerged for Dolphin fans everywhere.

Entering week 7 the Dolphins faced division rival Buffalo in the Fest game (world renowned) needing to win to stay alive in the divisionBuffalo Bills vs. Miami Dolphins, needing to win to show they could keep up with surging Buffalo, needing to win to have any chance of continuing the season with any hopes for playoff glory, needing to win to show the Steelers beat down wasn’t a fluke. And needing to win because Larry Csonka along with Coach Shula and a host of other Dolphin greats were in attendance for Alumni weekend. With Fest attendees in place Jay Ajayi continued is ferocious running and the late surging Dolphins knocked out Buffalo with another 200+ yard running performance by Ajayi and his O-line. The Fest game saw Buffalo get handed their ass as they came off 4 straight wins with dominant running and run defense, neither of which was a factor in the Fest loss.

So here we are at the bye week with a team that looks focused and poised to make a legit run at the playoffs. Is it real? Are the last 2 weeks who the Dolphins really are or are they the Dolphins we saw for the first 5 weeks? Recent evidence favors the team we’ve seen for the last two games. A healthy O-line featuring 4 first round picks, a new coach learning his team, a back establishing himself as one of the best in the league and a Defense finding its stride – stopping the run, pressuring the QB and getting off the field.

Bye week. Bi-polar. Is the team bi-polar, will they be good for a stretch and then look like the first five weeks did? As long suffering fans we can only hope that Coach Gase has tapped in to something, that he’s found the heart of this team, that what we saw most recently is the emergence of a physical team that wins in the trenches and is capable of beating anyone on any given Sunday. That the soft Dolphins who for years have failed to string together wins, dominate teams and win big games went out the door when Thomas, Turner and Douglas were fired.

Now it is time to reveal this year’s Bye week Bi-Babe.

Son — really great post that puts in better words what we are all thinking about the last two games, but gotta quibble on this.

“So here we are at the bye week with a team that looks focused and poised to make a legit run at the playoffs. Is it real?”

We very well make a run….but too much in the 1-4 for us to think about making it right now. But heck…..if we put on the run to actually even get the #6 slot, other teams should be very scared. Cause that would mean we dominated from now on.

My local sports radio was talking about Miami this morning. They were talking about us trading for a QB. Room or Cutler specifically. Where does this stuff come from? Both of those guys would be horrible signings.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

That’s the thing isn’t it though. Your local radio guy probably doesn’t know 5% as much about the Phins as we do. He probably read one of the Tanny is done and they may trade for Culter stories from like three weeks ago…..and then the Phins came up.

This particular BYE week has killed me in FF. My fault, I was too busy worrying about the Fest to realize I have about 5 players out this week. Big ones too, like Landry, Ajayi, Antonio Brown, Sterling Shepard. OUCH!
    —————————
Least all those guys will be back next week, says the guy who bragged about drafting AP and Lacy and Charles, even if he may actually be fantasy relevant at some point on the Stanger Browns in that league.

Stanger, you gotta believe! It’s all I have to go on, hope of a diehard lifer. A couple more wins and we’re right there looking at it.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

For sure two more wins would make the rest of the games a whole lot more exciting. And maybe it just me, like to set up with realistic and get excited as heck when the movie-line stuff comes out.

Most important thing for me this year was when Gase cut those three Gs all at once. Think we have a keeper, who is setting up a long-term shop like with the Pats and Steelers.

      • son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

That move so far looks like the difference maker. The key going forward is to stay healthy particularly on the o-line.

  11. son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

If we play the NFC south next year maybe we go to Carolina which would be another good location for a fest for a lot of people to get to. And no I wouldn’t root for Cam.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

If they can say we are playing the Saints in London next year, then no question we also have games against Tampa, Carolina, and Atlanta. Only Q is which are away and which at home. And just read we are “the hosts” for London.

So we will play at two of the three…..and any would be a good towns to go on the road for. Maybe we can set up. But when it comes to the main Fest, pretty clear that folks with plane tickets was to go to Hard Rock Mecca.

  12. Randy's avatar Randy says:

I still think the biggest difference has been the way Gase is now calling games and using strong running formations. We’re not constantly trying to block an extra man. Everyone already knew our backups on the OL were not good. Cutting them didn’t really change much because those guys weren’t supposed to be starters. Getting the assumed starting line up they wanted and then putting them in favorable blocking formations was the big thing. We’ll see how Gase and the team responds when teams learn our tendencies and begin scheming to stop it.

    • son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

There was story I read where Albert and the oline went to coach and suggested running power that they felt they could run out of running straight ahead and Gase went with it. It’s been the difference.

  46. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

We really need Raiders or Chiefs or Broncos (or all 3) to start sucking.

Looking at our schedule, we lost on the road to 3 teams most thought we’d lose. The only “burp” that didn’t follow the pattern of prediction was the Titans game.

Looking ahead, if we keep running the ball like this, Cards and Pats were only ‘real’ threats… and now the Cards look wobbly. Back to back games on the west coast will be the biggest challenge.

  47. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

None of the Dolphins’ next eight opponents have a winning record. That looming schedule includes the Jets Sunday at Hard Rock Stadium, then at Chargers, at Rams, 49ers, at Ravens, Cardinals, at Jets and at Bills. All eight have a losing record except 4-4 Buffalo.

Their combined record (including the Jets twice): 23-37-1.

    [that’s from Barry Jackson]

  48. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

    Also from Jackson:

“Dion Jordan told me his second knee injury resulted from “trying to too hard to come back too soon,” and that even though he’s certain he will play this season, he has no idea when. Under contract for 2017, Jordan loves Vance Joseph’s attacking defense and believes he can help as a 275-pound defensive end, with linebacker no longer an option at this weight.””

Guess the question of whether Jordan could switch to LB has been answered. As has the one on whether he could put more weight on his frame…..he was 236 at the combine. Even for a big guy, forty pounds is a lot.

Why am I also guessing Dion ain’t running a 4.6 40 anymore either?

    • herdfan's avatar herdfan says:

If he’s ‘certain’ he’s playing this season I think he’s still on drugs. I hope he never steps on the field again. BUST!

    Ken

what else are they going to do

they are in the middle of a super bowl run every year
    Contracts come due each year

They are not going to overpay a player like that

So they are going to let him going and get something back

I guess they could have let him hot the FA market and picked up the comp pick in 2 years

I don’t think Collins makes or breaks the Patriots
So why not – get that draft pick early

its not like they are in some kind of 5 year cycle
they’ve been good for 15 years now
moves like this have to happen on most teams

but usually they aren’t contenders when they unload starters
but the patriots are always contenders

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

You only have Brady for a limited number of years left so if you are in week and you are trading away your best LB mid season I don’t get it and yes I think it can make a big impact at this point of the season. He needs to play better

but its okay to give a 2nd year player some leeway to improve when the other players at the position are playing pretty well

Trade him? Who the hell would trade for him?

You don’t know, with different scenery he could be a different player.

I don’t think we should trade player X, it’s not his fault he has sucked here.

That’s why I think we should trade him.

    Obligatory stat list

    Player X is good

    Player X sucks

I said when we drafted him he would suck

Man player X was great in college. I was psyked when we got him. It’s the coaches fault for not developing him right.

No, it’s because they are playing the wrong scheme for him. Said when we drafted him we should have switched his position.

You are a know-it-all but you don’t know shit. I watched the coaches film. He sucks and has always sucked.

We need to blow up the whole front office and bring in some people who know what the hell they are doing. just drafting player X where we did proves that they’re idiots and all should be fired.

‘but taking a rb in the first is a ridiculous idea.’
it was meant to point out how ridiculous you thinking cook would be there in the 3rd round is.
    +++++++++++++++++++
put it this way. even if we had no holes anywhere I still wouldn’t want a rb in the first.

GUESSING MOST OF YOU noticed that former U-M star Andre Johnson retired today. His NFL career stats include 1,062 receceptions (9th All-Time) for 14,185 yards (10th All-Time) and 70 Touchdowns. Seven times he was elected to the Pro Bowl. His career, IMHO, is borderline for Canton. Strictly from his catches and yardage, he likely earns enshrinement. But you’d certainly prefer 85-100 TD’s, not 70. And a few outstanding performances in the playoffs wouldn’t hurt, either. Overall, I’d rate his chances as no better than 50-50 for election to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Which ain’t bad, folks!!!!!!! He was some playuh!!

    He needs to play better
but its okay to give a 2nd year player some leeway to improve when the other players at the position are playing pretty well
I think the good teams tend to give their young players a couple of years to make an impact

Parker’s issue emanates from the stench that’s found behind the C.

  81. The Eagles dropped more passes last night (7) than the entire Phins team has all year.

    Cutler sucks so bad

SON: After watching the overpaid Cutler and the REALLY OVERPAID BRADFORD play in the 1st quarter, all of a sudden our quarterbacking situation doesn’t look nearly as bad as some might think. Hell, compared to these two, Tanny looks close to All-Pro caliber!

      NO sleeping pills needed tonight!

Me too I was very high on him. Vikes were smart spending a first on him. It was a surprise at the time he went so high but he’s proven his worth.
I also wanted us to get Everson Griffen.

  85. olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

BUT FORMER FLORIDA ATLANTIC STAR CREVON LeBLANC provides some excitement with a good punt return for Da’ Bears!! Boy, FAU could sure use LeBlanc this year. They’ve only won 1 game all season. Looks like the end of the road for head coach Charlie Partridge.

  86. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    son,
I wasn’t too high on Griffen. I thought he was a great athlete but really raw, but he has developed nicely. I also wanted to draft Eric Kendricks and said we should have traded for Joseph. Sharrif Floyd, who many here liked, isn’t even playing. Xavier Rhodes is starting to play really well too. They have built a solid defense around some pretty good players.

I get it, i just made a simple comment i would like seeing Cook in a fins uniform. I think he has special talent. Didn’t mean to make it a negative conversation. It was just more a comment about his talent then what the fins need.

    • My apologies ffr. Didn’t mean to pee on your Cheerios. I’ve just been reading way too many comments from people who want the team to take a rb in the first rd, either Fournette or Cook, and it’s got me all discombobulatated.
Cook is without a doubt a special talent and would definitely look good in a Phins uni.

SPEAKING OF “WELL MANNERED,” I wonder how Indians’ fans will react tonight if their boys clinch the World Series??? Maybe one of them will scalp a local PC person who wants to eliminate the “Indians” team mascot??

He definitely fits the size criteria, and he does have 7 INT’s in 3 seasons, although he got them in 2. Wouldn’t be surprised if we take a look, especially with Howard out for a while
