Alien Combine Review

Ah….Earth…your time has come….

wedgefiles

I’ve collected enough data to finally end your time in this universe.  The Alpha Alien is going to give me a promotion for this.  I have to admit…I’m going to miss your football.

wedgetank

But I had my fun in 2016 with the Dolphins making the playoffs…So it’s not going to get much better…and if it doesn’t get much better, well then…Earth must die…

targeterath

I have you in my sights now….

But wait…what’s this?

combineontv

Oh….it’s the NFL combine…maybe I should put a hold on the destruction of Earth for just a little…

Look at all these great athletes…I wonder if they might help the Dolphins take down the Cheatriots…hmmm

rossisaitacombine

Man I enjoyed watching the first couple of days of the combine.

Isaac Asiata, the Utah OG prospect was the op performer in the bench press with 35 reps.

And John Ross – he could have had an Island if he was wearing the right shoes.  He ran an impressive 4.22 in the 40 breaking Chris Johnson’s record.  As it turns out Ross ended up with a Nike shoe contract instead of an island.

kizercook

There were also some unimpressive performances.  The QBs weren’t particularly impressive.  Deshone Kizer’s lack of accuracy was particularly notable.  I’m sure a team will take him early – but he may not be ready as a rookie.

And Dalvin Cook, who’s a great athlete and will probably be a great RB in this league, had somewhat pedestrian numbers.  But trust me – he will be a great RB irrespective of a modest combine.

but who cares…

If you are like this alien you were most excited about Sunday

That’s when the Linebackers and Defensive Line ran their drills

garrettcombine

The Godafther Garrett

First off I think we can settle who will be the #1 Overall pick.  It looks like Texas A&M Myles Garret solidified the belief that he will be the #1 overall pick on Sunday.

He did 33 reps on the bench press on Saturday, 2nd among defensive lineman.  But He didn’t stop there.  He ran a 4.64 40 yard dash, jumped 41 inches in the vertical jump, and 10 feet 8 inches on the broad jump.

So its safe to say, the Dolphins don’t have a shot at Garrett.  But you already knew that.

NFL: Combine

Reddick makes Lou smile

What you may not have known is that another player within reach of #22 proved himself to be a great athlete, despite going to a smaller school (Temple) not known as a powerhouse.

Hassan Reddick has had a great offseason.  First he turned heads at the Senior Bowl, then at the combine:  He ran an impressive 4.52 40 and leaped over 11 feet in the broad jump.  The only problem with Reddick’s absurd numbers are the fact that it might push him to go a little earlier than #22….the good news:  There are other prospects.

tjwatt-combine

T.J. Watt Runs!

For example TJ Watt.  You already know about the Watt family.  They are great athletes.  The youngest Watt looks like he will be a very good player in the NFL for a long time.

Watt ran a sub 4.70 40, leaped an impressive 37 inches and benched 21 reps.  Watt also looked impressive in general in the linebacker drills.

If you ask this alien, his less coveted Badger teammate, Vince Biegel also looked pretty good.

The thing about Watt and Biegel is whether they are right for the Dolphins.  Playing in a 3-4 system in college caused each of them rushing the passer a lot.  Both have shown – they can get in the backfield fast.  But can they drop in coverage?   Well it probably helps

jabrill-pepperscombine

Peppers JUMP!

if you are a pretty good athlete.  I’m pretty sure a lot of 4-3 teams might look at either prospects in either an outside linebacker role or a defensive end role.  But time will tell…

Speaking of positional ambiguity – how bout that Jabril Peppers.

He tested on Sunday with the linebackers and guess what…he is testing again on Monday with the defensive backs.  Peppers appears to be a player who prides himself on proving how good he is.  And you know what Peppers – you proved it to this alien!

mcmillancombine

McMillan talks about proving aliens wrong

Peppers had the fastest 40 time among linebackers.

For a guy who isn’t too familiar with the linebacker drills, he looked pretty good in those drills as well.  But I expected that from Peppers.

What I didn’t expect is Ohio State Linebacker, Raekwon McMillan to be so fast.  His 4.61 40 yard dash was among the fastest of the day.

keith-kelsey-combine

Keith Kelsey runs the 40

There were other impressive players.  Like Keith Kelsey who looked like a linebacker who has refined his skills.

Tennessee linebacker Jalen Reeves-Maybin looked very good in the drills.  If he can stay healthy, some NFL team might get an excellent MLB.

Anthony Walker, Jr., a pork favorite, who looked fast and fluid and not the slow and overweight player some suspect he has become.

If it weren’t for Peppers you might hear endless squealing about how fast Duke Riley and his 4.58 40 is.

derek-barnett-combine

Derrick Barnett assaults equipment

The combine was so stacked with defensive talent up front that I barely noticed players like Derrick Barnett or Carl Lawson.  But each also looked good.

Legacy players like Bryan Cox, Jr, and Hardy Nickerson, Jr. also made their dad’s proud.

Tyus Bowser, may not be from a powerhouse conference,  but the Houston Cougar looked like one of the better athletes on the field/track.  Smaller school guys like Connor Harris were able to show their skills and solidify a day 3 pick.

Please Dolphins…..Please Draft some of these defensive players.

The fate of your planet may depend on it…

Havent heard anything saying we are interested in him. He is kinda like Wake and even though a good bit older is still pushing himself to play at a high level, but i dont know if we go for an older, and expensive vet option again. I think we might would bring in a vet but i think they are gong to look to add a guy who is like Branch vs another potential Mario Williams signing.

I definitely put stock in a guy being an accomplished wrestler at a high level when I look at their background.

  18. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    D,
I’m not interested in position flexibility. I think fans way overvalue that when you’re talking about high end starters. They’re being drafted or signed to play one position. You want flexibility, but it’s a secondary concern. Flexibility is nice but not if I’m drafting a guy in the second round. I expect him to come in and lock down a specific position. Looking at both players and how they would perform at their primary position, I think Elflein will be better than Pocic. I’m not gonna draft a kid in the second who is worse at his primary position just because he can play another…in the 4th round…sure. It’s cool if you think the other way. It’s not a wide margin either way.

  19. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I don’t need to see any more of the Pocic tape, I watched about 2 minutes:

How can you go wrong with either Pocic or Elflein? One could be an All Pro at any position he wants to play on the line, the other an All Pro Center.

    • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

The problem is almost everyone needs interior line help. There is a chance neither is on the board when we pick in the second.

      • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

I think Procic will be available into the 3rd. I actually like Kyle Fuller of Baylor more than Pocic.

  20. dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

Haven’t heard anything about Ward to Miami, but did hear Kayvan WEbster of Denver is getting interest from Miami & Philly.

  21. Randy's avatar Randy says:

I don’t quite get why folks think Pocic is or can be a good guard or a better guard than Elflein. Pocic has only played about 10 snaps at guard in college. Elflein played a lot at guard and played well. He’s proven he’s good at both center and guard against high level college competition. Pocic has not.

    • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

I don’t like how high Pocic comes up from his stance. He’s typically driven 1-2yds into the backfield off the snap.

  22. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Lol. Oops. I meant 10 games…and I think it’s 7 or 8…not snaps.

  24. D's avatar D says:

Position flexibility is most definitely important with only being able to carry 53 total players on a team. That’s why the coaches place so much emphasis on it as well. If it wasn’t important, then it would be a thing much less a plus for a player. You have a guy who can play multiple positions you have more options on shifting the players around with out weakening the positions as much. I don’t see how you could see it any different given what we have gone through with OL injuries in recent years

  25. D's avatar D says:

I like both so I’m going to move to taking the position Steve is, but I do feel Pocic is the better of the two

  26. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    D,
I think position flexibility means less the higher you draft a guy. It’s always a bonus but not a necessity if I think or expect the guy to be a mainstay at a particular position. If I’m drafting a guy in rounds 1 or 2, I’m drafting him for a specific position. If he can play another, great, but I’m not gonna take a lesser player simply because he can play two positions. Now, if you view two guys as equal or really, really close…then position flexibility may be your determining factor.
    ***
Elflein did win the Rimington award…not Pocic. Somebody thinks Elflein is a better center at least. Elflein has also played more at guard and was highly touted there too. Pocic was not.

  27. Randy's avatar Randy says:

And, it’s all just guessing at this point, anyway. Like I’ve said, I don’t think a lot of the OL in this draft. None of them are great. Just go find one with good value. If that’s Pocic, that’s fine.

  28. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    D,
Pocic was a finalist for the Rimington. I think it as Pocic, Orlovsky and Elflein. Pretty sure Pocic played almost all of his games at Center last year. But, you do a lot more research than I do.

  29. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Position flexibility is great if the player is good at both or multiple positions. Just a stupid example, but Kraig Urbik isn’t more valuable than Kevin Zeitler, because Urbik has played 5 positions on the line, and Zeitler only plays RG. In other words, I’d rather have a player that is very good at one position than a player who just OK at more.

  30. olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

A couple of months ago I came out for taking Elflein. Nothing’s happened since then to change my mind. Isaid then and I say NOW; Take the BEST AVAILABLE DL or LB in round one; take the Elf in round 2 (and be ready to move up in round 2 to get him) and take the best available player for either DL or LB in round 3. THAT’s THE PLAN.
    —————–
Now “THE PLAN” could change IF we make significant signings at one or more of those 3 positions in FA. IF we take care of one of those 3 in the next few days, then DB moves into our Top 3 areas of need. But, remember this: we need at least TWO additions to the starting 5 in the O-Line. And I’d be surprised if we filled BOTH of them in FA.

Hey he is one of my top re-signs, but as always the number is the key. I could live with $7 mil, even if think his actual worth less. Think he is an average starting DE with not a huge upside, but maybe with his age that is worth $7 mil these days.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I was just pointing out that it didn’t do down the way it read. Cruz was okay last year but he’s not the same player he was a few years ago.

I didn’t know the exact timing but they still did not pay Cruz to now pay Marshall. And maybe he is not, but at the right price would could see him as 3rd/4th with Carroo (plus mentor). Was more going to how cool it would be to see him do the Salsa at the Rock.

You know who could be a possible safety prospect say in the 3rd rd is Josh Jones NC State. He’s 6-1 220 has good speed 4.4, can play in the box or in deep space. The negatives on him is he plays a little bit out of control at times and needs to be more disciplined but that’s the case with a lot of rookies. He’s very physical and is a big hitter. He sounds a bit like a young Reshad. That might be a nice pairing with two big interchangeable safeties – The Jones Bros. 🙂

  65. It’s embarassing to admit, but I have no clue who to draft nor do I know who the Dolphins plan on drafting. I haven’t followed football at all and every year it gets harder to keep up as I lose more interest in the Dolphins. Thank god I can come and read some of these threads and see what people are thinking because football is on the furthest back burner possible at this point.

Baseball has solidified itself as my number one sport and it’s not even close at this point. Thank god it starts soon!

In other news, thank god B Marshall isn’t in the AFC anymore. I was afraid that the Pats were going to pick him up. Then I’d probably consider suicide.

We just made the playoffs for the first time in 8 seasons and now is when you’re losing more interest in the Dolphins? LOL

Vinnie — one of the great things about this place is that you can not follow the news and then kick right back in and catch up.

Which is your small ball team. Lots of Mets fans here……and if you like the Cubs or Cards we might not get along (Pirates for me).

  70. dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

So Armando said Mia. isn’t announcing their signings until tomorrow & are dealing in secrecy. A little later Branch puts out an emoji tweet that you’d sssume means he got a contract…but doesn’t use any words. That is followed by Zach Brown sending a tweet to Preston Brown that he’ll miss playing next to him…no further info.

This is NOT the time to bail on the Dolphins – We’re moving on up!

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

If true and I won’t be surprised if it is, he earned it. He’s not great, but he plays hard and does make some plays. We could do a lot worse. He also loves it in Miami, loves the team.

      Good, I like it!

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Certainly makes the draft easier. Lets see what the number is……my guess is it won’t be shocking over all or he would have hit FA.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

        Just a guess – 4 years $24M/$10M guaranteed.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

I’m guessing 4 years and $28 mil, but am hoping you are right. But always about those guarantees and the salaries in the “open cut” years when it comes to averages.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

$2.5M bonus per over 4 years, $3.5M annual salary. He’s young enough to play out the entire deal.

  73. dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

@ArmandoSalguero: The Dolphins have in the past day made strong offers to Kenny Stills and Andre Branch. Branch bites. Stills a work in progress still.

  80. dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

@RapSheet: The #Dolphins are signing pass-rusher Andre Branch to a 3-year contract worth $27M, source said. Cashes in after a resurgence.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Wow! Good for him, $8M per, probably half guaranteed.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

That is serious money. If true he is with us for at least two more seasons and three years rather than four is interesting. Maybe he was looking for that third contract before he got too old. We’ll see how they structured it.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

He earned the respect of the coaches. They saw him every day. Good for him. Sometimes I think we under value solid players thinking they should play for peanuts. I’m guilty of that.

Dolphins balked at paying Olivier Vernon $8M per in Aug. 2015. Today paying $9M per to Andre Branch.

Except OV got $17M per with the Giants.

  82. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Yeah — seems at least Mando should go apples to apples.

“Olivier Vernon signed a 5 year, $85,000,000 contract, including a $20,000,000 signing bonus and $52,500,000 guaranteed.”

  83. D's avatar D says:

Ok so Branch will be back on a multi-year, and Kiko might not get tendered as long as they can sign him to a new deal. IMO id tender him and then work out the extension after. No since on chancing it going to deadline without something already in place.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

That could happen tomorrow. I could see a 1st rd tender on Kiko to buy us some time. I doubt a team gives up a 1st and knocks it out of the park that we can’t match for him.

  84. D's avatar D says:

I think he means as far as applying the FT to him, but i think that was even like 15mil

  85. D's avatar D says:

I think thats a little bit of an overpay for Branch but its not too bad. Probably what they had to pay to keep him, and probably means they are going to draft a DE early too. Semi-short contract, probably less than half guaranteed, definitely sounds like a move you make if you are planning to take a DE in day 1-2.

  86. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I don’t think the Dolphins wanted 2 relatively young DE’s walking out on them 2 years in a row, considering what we have on the roster. We may have overpaid Branch a little, but it’s a good signing IMO

    • D's avatar D says:

Yeah im good with it too. Didnt mean to sound otherwise. Its not a really huge investment either, and it would give us a good vet who has performed well to mentor new guys.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

OV got almost twice the amount and he’s not even close to being twice the player. Maybe OV is an 88-89 grade player and Branch is an 86-87. The Giants overpaid for OV in a big way. He had the same year he always has – solid, disruptive, but not a finisher and does not take over games.

  87. D's avatar D says:

7-8per is what i said would be my max for Stills, so if it winds up being a re-sign at 8, that seems to be a nice compromise on both sides to me.

  88. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

    Ian Rapoport‏@RapSheet 13 minutes ago

On the Kenny Stills front, The #Dolphins are trying to keep him, but at least three teams are still in the mix. The dominoes wait.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

If it’s close we’ll win. If some team goes bonkers we’re out. That’s how it sounds to me.

      • D's avatar D says:

Sounds to me like no one is going bonkers either, or we would already be talking about Kenny Still to some other team. The offers are all probably relatively the same and its probably going to come down to guaranteed money vs higher per year amount and it will just depend on where Stills thinks he is in his career and which is more important to him. He is too young to be trying to find a championship team right now, so its going to be about money, im just not sure if, because he is young he wants that per year amount to be higher or if he plays the safety game and goes for guaranteed monies.

IMO i would always go the guaranteed amount, which is why i kept saying if we make offers to these young players, we should just load up the guaranteed amount and get the per year avg down. Make it really enticing for them. There is little chance that we would want to get rid of a guy like Zeitler in the next 2-3 years, so why build the out in his contract unless there is something about him that worries you about a 26 year old not making it through a 4-5 year contract.

  89. D's avatar D says:

Elvis Dumervil is getting cut supposedly. Thats pretty crazy.

  90. drg's avatar drg says:

I would rather pay our own guys than take a chance with guys our coaches aren’t familiar with. At least with Branch we know what to expect and how to use him best. I’m good with Stills staying or going at the rumored price. Other than those two, I’d prefer we stay out of the FA market until the second level guys or bargain vets are there for team friendly deals.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

It makes sense to keep guys
      Some turnover is the norm
But try to avoid as much as you can IMO

    • D's avatar D says:

I agree in principal but i think with film on the player, bringing in guys for visits where you can find out where their head is, etc, i dont think any one FA is safer than another, you just have more time with some of them to know if they have the right personality for your coaching style etc. You still are going to have hits and misses. Stills for example may have been being a team all year, putting himself out there to get the big contract and then turn around and be a shit after the ink is on the paper, you just never know. I also want to point out that was just a for example, not my actually feelings on how Stills would react after signing.
