The Wedge Scouting Report: Jabrill Peppers, Safety

Change is good.

You Earthlings do it – so do aliens like me

Wedgegetshairdone

And I needed a new hairdo…

No I’m not vain

I just need something versatile for a galaxies

and what is a better example of versatility

WedgePeppersCut

Peppers!!!!

What do you think of my new hairdo?  I love it!

Its the kind of do that you can wear when you man a high powered phaser cannon or when you are relaxing eating Xerbe Squids on your day off!

Versatile like Jabrill Peppers

Peppers3

So who is Peppers you say?

Is he a Safety or a CB?  Is he a Linebacker?

Does he play defense or offense?  Is he a running back?

Does he play special teams?  Is he a kick returner or a punt returner?

Who is Jabrill Peppers???  Well as Gary Oldman once said:

everyone2

Peppers can do it all.  And that is an asset that he brings to whichever team drafts him

While playing for the Michigan Wolverines Peppers was a star.

In three years he had 86 solo tackles, 119 combined tackles, 18.5 tackled for a loss, 3 sacks, 1 interception, 11 passes defended, 10 catches, 82 receiving yards, 45 carries, 239 rushing yards, 5 offensive touchdowns, 39 punt returns, 510 punt return yards, 18 kick returns, 483 kick return yards, 1 special teams Touchdowns and 6 total Touchdowns.

I’m out of breathe…

Peppers4

Consider Jabrill Peppers to be the Alpha Male of the 2017 Draft.  He may be the most talented player available in 2017.

Peppers showed off that talent at the combine in Indianapolis.

Peppers, who tested with the Linebackers and the Defensive Backs ran a blazing 4.46 in the 40 yard dash, recorded 19 bench presses, a 35.5 vertical jump and a 128 inch broad jump.

Among Linebackers Peppers a the top 40 yard time, the 4th best vertical jump and the longest broad jump

Peppers5

In the NFL, Peppers will probably be a Safety and Nickelback

well that is what this alien hears anyway…but who knows.

What is really interesting is whether Peppers will play special teams in the NFL making him a dual threat he certainly has the skill set to return kicks.

Peppers6

But me…

I like Peppers on defense.  I can just imagine a healthy Reshad Jones pairing up with the athletic Peppers.  No one will be able to get to the edge against the Dolphins defense!

Peppers isn’t afraid to hit ball carriers and in fact often knifes behind the line of scrimmage fluidly.  I imagine the Peppers Safety Blitz in the NFL will be spicy!

Peppers7

So what kind of Alien Weapon is this ultimate swiss army knife

….um you guessed it

Always keep your Peppers handy

Always good to shoot the shit with ya, bud! Glad to see you again. I usually have short windows in which to get posts in, and I don’t always get to cover everything. And speaking of…I’m heading out to shoot some pool with the fellas and tell lies about ourselves. Lol Later.

Randy — come to the Fest and there is always pool. You’d have to beat OD first, but I’ll have next game on that match.

I can’t get excited about a one yr wonder at LB in the 3rd rd. Sorry, but it’s just me. If he had some kind of an outstanding season it would be different but he didn’t. I consider Anzalone with his production and injuries to be an udfa at best right now
    —————————————————-
I understand Lou, you do not like him, but you are in the minority with that feeling. Most sites have him as a second or 3rd round prospect, and i have seen a couple that had him going in the late part of the first round.

    • D says:

Mayock has him in the top 5 LBs, again, not tring to convince you you are wrong (though i do think the UDFA is going too far even for you), but i am showing you that it cant be so crazy to think that he would be worth a 3rd when so many people have him at least in a 2-3rd discussion.

      • he’s had one year of production in which he had 21 solo tackles and that’s it. plus, he’s got injury issues. I’m not saying this because I’m trying to prove something here but when you look at any guy who’s done what he’s done so far with the injuries he’s had there’s no way he should be considered a 2nd or 3rd rd pick. Guys like this have always gone late or undrafted.

Me thinks people put too much of an emphasis on him coming from the Gators maybe.

    • Only thing that matters is where he goes in the draft and how he does once he gets to the next level. None of these mocks or opinions of guys like Mayock matter at this time.

    Randy,

I throw shit out there too… I’m just trying to figure out the angle of trying to sign Poe. I’m left to presume we want to keep Suh from being doubled and that makes sense. Get a true NG here in our 4-3 and free the multi-$$$ man in $uh up to do damage unlike he hasn’t been able to do thus far, at least statistically.

If we’re comfy with either of Kiko or Timmons at the MIKE, I’d think we wouldn’t be trying the NG route… JMO. It’s all good though… perhaps a Tony McDaniel or his like would suffice. All I know is that we MUST stop the run in ’17, my man.

Like you, I’m only trying to read the tea leaves, ’cause and effect’, ‘rhyme and reason’, and keeping up with these college cats to make our Phins better… and with INDEPENDENT thought. That’s why I LOVE exchanging football ideas with others like you. It’s FUN and for the LOVE of our Phins!!!

Thanks for getting back to me, man!

So what are we looking for? No offense, but that didn’t declare what we’re looking for when stated it “all depends” on what we’re wanting Phillips to be, being Phillips himself is undefined as either a space-eater or gap-shooter. See what I mean?
    ————
I absolutely get what you mean, but my only point was it depends on Phillips. Have no clue what they are looking for without that. Pretty sure if they see no future in him they will let him eat away and bring in someone more nimble though……like Mitchell was.

  6. Tim Knight says:

Phillips has the ability to be as dominant as he wants to be.

  7. Tim Knight says:

So if the season started right now and everyone is healthy, this is what I believe will be our starting base offense.
    LT Tunsil
    LG Larsen/Bushrod
    C Pouncey
    RG Larsen/Bushrod
    RT James
    TE Fasano
    TE Thomas
    WR Landry
    WR Stills
    QB Tannehill
    RB Ajayi

We’ll see how the OL jells but we have a lot of skill and reserves as well. If we’re solid up front we could be a very good offense.

  8. If people truly believe Tannehill is the shit and he’s their franchise qb then how in the world could you look at that offensive line and say, “yeah, we’re good to go?”

Larsen and Bushrod are backups who will most likely be starting this season and people are fine with that? I wanted Larsen but I wanted him to solidify the depth in the interior of the line and in case Pouncey went down but I sure don’t want him and Bushrod starting on the line.

Again, if you truly believe Tannehill is the guy you WANT the team to get this o-line fixed or they are going to waste the career of your prized qb.

    • Tim Knight says:

LOL, as of “right now” I think we can play, because it’s going to revolve around Ajayi and our skill players. 25-30 passes per game and 35+ rushes. I think that’s where we’re going.

      • Tim Knight says:

Bushrod is further along on the right side at guard then this time last year. Big difference. He’ll be 33 in August, not 36. Maybe he has a really good year. It does happen.

  9. As of now, I’ve got a draft board of only 34 players thru 7 rds for MIA.

  10. getterdone says:

Tim, on your offensive roster above, you didn’t have Parker on there, yet another weapon who i think takes a big leap this season.

    • Tim Knight says:

He’ll rotate with Landry and Stills in the big lineup and then be out there when we go 3 WR. Like I said we have good skill reserves as well.

  11. Here’s my board so far:
    1A
    F Lamp OG

  16. olddolphan says:

CONTRARY to what others may have said, I believe this team’s currently projected O-Line is NOT YET READY FOR PRIME TIME!!! Now, having said that, adding Elflein or Pocic or Lamp PLUS one more starting quality player would put this O-Line in the “very good to outstanding” category. But make no mistake about it. This O-Line is a work in progress, NOT an accomplished fact. There’s MORE work to be done IF our goal is to produce a legitimate Super Bowl contender.

    • You can’t accomplish everything you want in one offseason but you can get at least one thing right and this offensive line has been a work in progress way too long.

When you look at the offense as a whole the one part of it that still stands out as needing the biggest amount of help is the offensive line. Sure, we could use a young stud TE but it’s nowhere near the glaring need the team has on the offensive line.

  18. BoulderPhinfan says:

So is bushrod gonna be RG and Larsen LG?

    • D says:

Id have Bushrod at LG and Larsen at RG, just because familiarity. Bushrod is more natural left side player, he has a career both college and pro’s on the left so his dominant first step is to the left, his instincts are for left, and i think thats part of why it took him so long to transition. Moving inside to OG was a big enough jump to combine it with a move to the opposite side you have played on your whole life. I still think its way too early to pencil anyone in to any spot but since Larsen has most recently been at RG, id keep him there and move Bushrod to the LG.

      • BoulderPhinfan says:

Thanks D. I agree. BTW this is a lot of starts.

        Omar Kelly‏Verified account @OmarKelly

    • stangerx says:

Only thing guaranteed is that they will both be coming into camp with a “compete” label. My guess is with each other and maybe someone else too, but you never know.

      • Tim Knight says:

Our OL could use some good old fashion competition instead of trying to force young draft picks into the lineup when they weren’t qualified.

      • stangerx says:

You think everyone on the team doesn’t remember the Bloody Monday that both Thomas and Turner were cleaning out their lockers after starting the day before? Talk about sending a message.

  19. D says:

Interesting draft, that drafttek has for us.
    Ryan Ramczyk OT Wisconsin
    Jarrad Davis LB UF
    Pat Elflein OC/OG OSU
    Sean Harlow OG Oregon St.
    Brendan Langley CB Lamar
    Ben Gedeon ILB Michigan
    Tashawn Bower DE LSU

  20. D says:

    Fansided has it.
    Forrest Lamp OG Western kentucky
    Jarrad Davis LB UF
    Derek Rivers DE Youngstown
    Tyler Olorsky OC/OG WVU
    Lorenzo Jerome S St. Francis
    Shaquil Griffen CB UCF
    Ardarius Stewart WR Alabama
    Ben Boulware ILB Clemson

This Draft has a pretty decent flow to it, IMO (small break for Lou to shit on the UF LB selection lol)

Stewart at the end, seems odd, but Stewart is a WR a lot like Landry so if they want a cheap add to the WR corp because they arent comfortable with all the ones we have, then i could see this pick not only being a ok one, but potentially a steal at that position in the draft.

  21. Tim Knight says:

Stanger, no doubt the players on this team know if they’re not performing up to par they won’t start, might be benched, inactive or cut.

    • D says:

Some of the new ones might not fully understand that, they probably have heard stuff, but they might not know the fully gravity of it until they hit PS workouts lol.

      • Tim Knight says:

Yeah I’m sure some players will warn the newbees, don’t dog it dawg or you’ll be in the dog house. LOL

    • stangerx says:

And that includes Ajayi told not to take a flight and Maxwell turning up on IR cause of butt splinters. Attitude is a key part of the new way…..don’t matter who you are. Shows in the FAs and the re-signs as well.

  22. D says:

Lots of people beginning to get on board with Lamp in the first. Still feel DE is the better move, but you know what they said about crowds, its not necessarily that you should follow them, but its not a bad idea to pay attention to where they are headed.

    • Tim Knight says:

Grier has said he believes in BPA in the first two rounds. We have enough wants/needs to go a lot of ways based on who we have highest on the board.

      • D says:

Im sure, and like i said our BPA’s arent theirs so you just have to assume if it happens, that was a more educated persons idea of the better player. We get in our own way a lot of times as outsiders looking in, so yeah if they take Lamp im going to be ok with it, because they saw it that way from a MUCH better perspective. For now though i dont see him as BPA in most the mocks i have doen, i still have several guys i see falling to us that i see better. Again, not that they are, i just see it that way.

Omar going off on his black QB rants defending why no team wants Kaepernick. It’s not about the color of his skin, it’s about his attitude. QBs need to be leaders, not dividers.

    • The Flying Pig says:

      I don’t think he is a divider
I don’t think most of his teammates have a problem with his attitude

There are football reasons not to want Kaep on your team

I just don’t think he is a desirable QB at this stage of his career on a football level
But he might make some one a good backup

      • Phindog says:

He will be a starter again…………………….. In the CFL !!

      • D says:

I think its that is a big part of it. A lot of teams will look past harmony issues and take a shot on a talented player, but i also in some ways agree with Tim, maybe just not in the direct relation to the statement. QB does come with traits that make them desirable or not desirable and one of them is focus on their craft and i think another thing is team first. Kaepernick hasn’t shown to have either of these traits and it started way before this most recent crap, and has just been expounded upon. I dont think the players respect him in the least but its not just the social commentary stuff.

      • Tim Knight says:

It’s not about most, it’s about the players, coaches, staff and fans who have a problem with it. Would you want your QB to be someone who creates divisiveness? I would not.

There’s a reason his agent sent out a message saying he won’t kneel anymore for the national anthem. It’s because he has no team.

  25. D says:

If anything i think Tanny has some of the core leader traits you want in a QB. I think he needs to have more bite to his bark, though, and i think he needs to have A LOT more confidence out there. One of the biggest impressions i came away from Moore stepping in to the Offense last year was that, despite an argument for Tanny being a good bit more talented physically than Moore, Moore’s poise was superior as was his confidence in the pocket, and his decsisions on his throws. Tanny has a second guessing nature to himself out there on the field, and it would go a long way to improving several areas we consider him a little (some times a lot) lacking in, just by figuring out how to get past that.

  26. D says:

    ——————————————–
I think Piggy is saying thatthe players were divided because of that, and that their problem with Kaepernick was probably more just confidence that he could get the job done as their QB. Im sure there were some players very against his stance, there had to be, its just a odds game, you couldnt have 100% of the players ok with it, since society as a whole wasnt 100% ok with it. But i do feel Piggy is right it was probably less about that and more about just, he cant get it done.

  27. Tim Knight says:

D, my main point was that it’s not about the color of his skin that Omar is making it out to be. That’s absurd. It’s about all the other things we’ve mentioned. Jay Cutler is one of the NFL’s whipping boys and he’s white. He can play the position at a high level but people dislike the guy.

    • D says:

Yeah on that point i agree. Omar takes things there a lot, and that kind of stuff just furthers the divide in our world. When things are about race, they need to be pointed out and dealt with. When they arent, you shouldnt make them about it, because it just muddies the waters, making the real cases harder to spot.

      • dbolt48 says:

Welp everything anymore is muddied because that has become so many people’s claims for their own failures.

  29. dbolt48 says:

When I look at the comment about Kaep as being a “divider”….I agree with it. This no about the taking a knee thing, but rather he’s been a selfish player & teammate throughout his time in the league. Going off and banging a teammates ex knowing & willingly isn’t a good teammate.

    • D says:

Yeah thats pretty much how i feel about him, though divider i am not really seeing it quite there. He is just selfish, and that usually makes other only do what is obligated for you, not a drop more. Thats not a good teammae situation.

      • dbolt48 says:

Remember in 2011 according to captain Dip-Shit Miami didn’t sign Vince Young to be their starting QB because the organization was racist.

  30. mf13ss says:

Speaking of the CFL and QBs… I’ve still got my eyes on young Brandon Bridge. Unfortunately for him, his CFL career has yet to take off.

  31. mf13ss says:

And speaking of the CFL, I’m VERY looking forward to seeing my man Shaky Smithson’s debut for the Ottawa Redblacks in June! He’s battled back from his former injuries and I hope he shows and proves his way back to the NFL.

  32. Randy says:

I don’t like the value at thall guard position in round 1. That doesn’t mean they can’t draft one there. I just think there’s better value at other positions. The top guy or two….whomever you may think they are….are really not much better than the next 5 or so. I think the nice thing for us is that we can go several different ways. We should be able to get a good player at a position of need.

    • Tim Knight says:

Yep! Go BPA in the 1st and 2nd then target need in the 3rd and with our three 5s. In the 7th take a chance on a talented guy who may have dropped for some reason or use it to trade up a few spots maybe in the 5th for someone specific.

    • mf13ss says:

      ^^^
      What Randy said. I agree.

  33. mf13ss says:

I’m REALLY hoping that Dion Dawkins is flying under the radar of many. I’ve talked about him in January on the F-ME, and his Combine reinforces my thoughts on him.

I’m not willing to draft an O-Lineman in the 1st due to the uber-talent available for us at Defensive positions of need… but I sure as hell would draft Dawkins in the 2nd… or Pat Elflein. Both have that POSITIONAL VERSATILITY that we need and are STUDS.

  34. stangerx says:

Omar shows a lot of edge on tweets and some subjects, but give him the time to think about actual football while writing an article and he still has sense.
    ———————————-

“Outside of adding a few more youngsters on an aging offensive line, there isn’t a glaring need on offense heading into next month’s draft. The Dolphins have enough to line up a respectable 53-man roster, one comparable to last year’s 10-6 playoff team.”

“But the roster moves made so far allow the Dolphins to take their time addressing both lines, and they won’t have to reach for anything specific early in the draft because there aren’t any glaring holes.”

Kelly: After addressing all glaring holes, Dolphins can now draft best players available
    http://www.sun-sentinel.com/sports/miami-dolphins/fl-sp-dolphins-draft-approach-20170317-story.html

    • Tim Knight says:

“Outside of adding a few more youngsters on an aging offensive line,”

Not really that old of an OL, the DL is probably more of a concern with age.

      • Tim Knight says:

We only have three OL over 30 or over when the season starts – Bushrod at 33 in August, Urbik 32 in September and Larsen 30 in June.

  35. mf13ss says:

    Tim,

As I promised you, I went back to Jon Toth’s tape. His 5.51 40-time at the Combine does not concern me, Brother. I’m not saying he’s elite or anything to that affect… but to net him in the 5th Round is VALUE. He’s sturdy at the POA, he can get slippery to make it to the 2nd level, and you NEVER notice him unless you’re looking for him (GRAND trait for an O-Line player).

Yessir… I feel he’d be an excellent 5th Round pick for us and he’s POSITIONAL VERSATILE (T, G, and C). Mike Pouncey he is not… but SOLID as funk he IS. I could see him becoming a starting G or C in the NFL sooner than later.

For us? Future LG, IMO, with the ability to flex to Center (or vice-versa). And in a pinch? Yup… he can play Tackle. He’s a ‘Swiss Army Knife’. In the ‘here and now’, he’ll provide the depth that our O-Line needs until he’s ready to become a full-time starter.

In short… yes… he plays faster on the field than what his 40-time suggests.

    • Tim Knight says:

I don’t get too crazy about OL 40 times but 5.51 just seems sloth like. LOL

      • Tim Knight says:

Not sure he’d make the team though. We already have 5 guys who can play center, 6+ who can play G and 6 who can play OT on our roster. I know some of them are long shots and backup types, just not sure we need a depth guy like Toth. We need more of a premier guy from the draft. But you never know.

    • D says:

I have seen Toth in a few games over the past few years and he has a pretty good anchor, really solid technique staying under the pads of the defensive players, and really nasty punch to knock them back and get under their pads but he is a phone booth kinda guy, and he actually earns that vs some guys like Gabe Jackson, who were way more athletic and able to move than people gave them credit for.

He really doesn’t have the feet for shifting around, there is no light an nimble in his steps, but he does have a lot of raw power and he will knock people back with that big punch, a pretty strong upper body and great hands. I wouldn’t be scared of taking him in the draft in the 5th or later, but i wouldn’t want to have him be our only OL drafted, because i think there might be nuances to our blocking schemes that might be outside what his level of footwork would excel at.

      • Tim Knight says:

        ^

      • D says:

Pocic is the real swiss army knife OL in the draft that has starter potential at any of them, though i would say i would not want him to be our permanent LT, but filling in there for a game or two wouldn’t make me too nervous. He probably could play RT on James’ level, but id be thinking starting LG, backup OC if i was drafting him.

  36. Tim Knight says:

D, I could see us going DL 1st, OL 2nd and LB 3rd adding more youth and solid competition to all three units. That could really help make the team better and deeper.

    • D says:

Couple of the DT’s make me feel like that might be a strategy too, just depending on what DE’s and/or LB’s are left. There are a couple guys who have first round grades that could be guys they could move around from DE to DT because they have very good explosive power and short burst speed, even though they current are weighing in at the 280-290 range.

  37. D says:

Im pretty comfortable that our draft strategy will have the flexibility to get good players in each round, so im not overly excited/nervous about getting any one specific guy or in what round we get them, i think what im most anticipating is what trades we might do, up in the draft, back. The depth of players has almost taken some of the energy from the draft lol, we have had so many years sitting on edge waiting for the name to be called, and this year it doesnt feel nearly as tense.

    • Tim Knight says:

I agree. I focus more on positions than specific prospects. That’s why I have LB at the end of the 3rd or beginning of the 4th however you want to look at it. Alonso and Timmons are going to be the main guys on the filed most of the time. I think we can get some production from some other guys. But DL and OL are trench guys and this regime values that highly. Nothing else works when trench play is struggling.

I also wonder if we brought Andre Carter on board as an asst. DL coach to tutor Jordan who is still here. That’s another edge guy already in the building even though we know there are a lot of issues there.

Live shot of Jon Toth running the 40

    • D says:

      Whats your 40 Piggy lol…..

      • D says:

In HS, probably even in college, i would have smoked Toth in the 40. These days, especially with this penchant for poppin calf muscles, there is no way i beat him.

      • D says:

Never-mind i thought it was a 5.31, its possible i might still beat him, if i actually made it the entire 40 yards with wheels left to finish the run.

  39. The Flying Pig says:

I’m the one in the front D

  40. D says:

Have any of you tried running a 40 yard dash in a while? I tried it semi recently because of the run rich run thing, and it felt like my feet were in molasses. Wasnt like i was ever blazing fast but more so the actual time of the 40, but the way i felt while running it that made me know what Mikey feels like every dary he walks the distance of his room to get his walker….took an eternity!

    • The Flying Pig says:

we occasionally do sprints at my crossfit gym

      and I suck

Honestly even the slowest times at the combine are amazing

    • Tim Knight says:

I never ran a true 40, just for fun in gym back in the day. But I was pretty fast when I was young. I also had some good quick twitch moves albeit at an amateur level. Not comparing myself to world class athletes though. LOL

      • D says:

We all ran 40’s in HS, i dont really know why, they never put down our times anywhere and it had no bearing on who would play and who wouldn’t. Maybe they just had us do it for fun or to push us to train hard so we could try to outdo each other with our times, not really sure but i could get under 5 for my 40, like 4.9 was i think my best, but more what im saying is, when i did those runs, i felt kinda normal speed at least. When i took off on that 40 recently i was like WTF are there cinderblocks tied to my feet, am i even moving, is time rolling backwards right now??

  41. Tim Knight says:

I want to ask this again. Reply fuckfaces! LOL

I also wonder if we brought Andre Carter on board as an asst. DL coach to tutor Jordan who is still here. That’s another edge guy already in the building even though we know there are a lot of issues there. It’s a start for him as a coach. He’s the same kind of build and player that Jordan was projected to be. Just food for thought.

    • D says:

I dont really think so, i think we have done what we can for Jordan, i think they are just going to see if he comes back around. I think Carter was just a guy that we liked as far as having a coach that brings a fairly recent player perspective, former elite level pro who might could get any of our young guys to play at a higher level. More for rookies than for Jordan IMO. He might could have that effect on Jordan i guess, but i am not holding my breath.

    • The Flying Pig says:

What’s makes you think Dion Jordan is in the building instead of in a cave somewhere devising his next plan to break our hearts…

  42. Tim Knight says:

    LOL @ D

  43. Tim Knight says:

Follow up question, do you think we’re waiting until after the draft to see where we are before deciding on Misi and Jordan?

    • The Flying Pig says:

I think maybe they are just letting them rehab in the facility

      • Tim Knight says:

But they’re on the payroll at almost $10M. That’s a lot of money as a favor.

Releasing both is a cap savings of $7.4+M.

    • D says:

I think Misi for sure would be one i think they are waiting to see from the drat what we do, i guess Jordan could also in that discussion as DE is one of the ones where we are really hoping to find this or next year starter. I think after day 2 we will know the fate of those guys.

I have seen Toth in a few games over the past few years and he has a pretty good anchor, really solid technique staying under the pads of the defensive players, and really nasty punch to knock them back and get under their pads but he is a phone booth kinda guy…
    ——–
I’m not trying to be a d!ck here, but you DO realize that you are using my man Lance Zierlein’s description (complete with his descriptive WORDS) of Toth here, right? That’s a “NO-NO” in this scouting biz… just sayin’.

Lance can’t STAND IT when other people use his same descriptive words regarding the same prospect; he’ll call them out.

Hey, don’t kill me, the mere messenger, D.

    • D says:

Just because we have the same conclusion. Can promise you thats my take on him and if it was similar to someone elses it was accidental/unintended. You have read my analysis of several players before, does that not look like something i normally write? Im not mad at you, but i can promise you, you are mistaken with what you feel about that.

    • mf13ss says:

And I disagree with my man Lance… I see Toth slipping to the second level and as someone who doesn’t necessarily need to play in a “phone booth”. Toth has more experience than Lance gives him credit for. I am the one who calls him ‘slippery’… you won’t find that from any other scout… INDEPENDENT opinion, fomented from muah, having actually watched his tape (not highlight reels).

I’m not trying to be confrontational here AT ALL! I’m just sayin’…

    • D says:

What part is descriptive too lol, i mean anchor is what an OL does, phone booth is a descriptor a few of us have used here, punch is what OL and Dl do to get under the pads….. am i missing some sore of unbeknownst flair i have that i didnt? Maybe i need to make money off this shit lol.

      • D says:

These are also terms i have used many times before…. sorry man, i guess im just caught off guard by it.

  45. mf13ss says:

It’s all good, D. I didn’t mean to get into anything with you, friend.

D, last time I tried to run the 40 it turned into a 500 yd dash last spring. I was 51 at the time. We were arresting a guy who jumped bond. He took off and we all went after him. He was 6’5″ 230 I couldn’t catch up to him but didn’t lose any ground either, stayed about 20yds behind him. My boss is about 290 and was way behind. The young buck in the office was about 50 yds behind me. He caught hell for that. I did catch up to the guy due to a 7′ privacy fence around the back side of a building. I’m glad cause I was about to puke. Bad thing was I was not carrying and left my taser in the vehicle. He turned and sized me up 5’10” 200, I could see it in his eyes he was goin to rush me. Just in a nick of time my boss came around the other side of the building and started yelling taser, taser, taser. His facial expression changed to “awe hell” and he went down to his knees. I got the cuffs on him and asked my boss where the young buck was and he said in the front of the building puking. He caught much more hell for that. LOL
To make a long story short, I believe if you take my fastest 40 yd segment out of that 500 and I believe it was in the high 4’s, maybe a 4.99. I don’t buy that he “indeed” worked hard to get in football shape

from 245 to 275 pounds in a few years is kind of dramatic for a guy who is working out like a professional athlete is

  53. I understand the team needs another DT in the rotation but I simply don’t understand it when fans think the team is going to magically take a guy in the early rounds who will supplant Phillips in his position next to Suh this season. It’s not going to happen.

    • The Flying Pig says:

I think this idea can be traced to the “Phillips sucks” crowd who hated him the day he was drafted

  54. The Flying Pig says:

  55. Do you think when young players see their teammates being rewarded w/new contracts they will want to train and play harder?

    • Tim Knight says:

I would hope so. A guy like Phillips has to know that if he plays really well there will be a big market for him. Big time DTs get paid.

  56. Rockphin says:

76 degrees and sunny here at poolside the Rockphin Homestead. What’s the weather like where you guys are?

  57. latest rumor, this one from a SF radio show: MIA looking to trade up in the draft. I don’t care who it’s for if we trade up it’s the dumbfuck move of the century. If we were one or even two players away from being a perennial SB contender it would be a different story but there isn’t a single player that would make this team a SB contender in the next two years if we took him.

  58. Rhino says:

83 degrees and sunny in South Texas

  59. steveccnv says:

On the 40 times, what they do at the combine is a little different than any other 40 times, because they don’t start the clock until the runner starts, so it’s comparable to getting a perfect jump, just as time starts.

  60. The Flying Pig says:

I wonder why/who we would trade up for?

Reuben Foster would be my choice

  61. Rockphin says:

We have to address the offensive line. Resigning bushrod who is rated the worst offensive guard in the league and signing Larson is a downgrade in my opinion. Tunsil to LT is a wash and Larson is a step back from Tunsil at LG.
All the front office it was save money they did not improve the line. They better draft so good guards this year

    • Yeah, Larsen was one of the guys I wanted along with Schwenke but I wanted him more for depth than anything because he can play all three interior positions. Filling in is one thing. Starting is another.

I don’t like the idea of going into the season with what we’ve got on the offensive line. If anyone thinks we’re getting it done with Larsen at LG and Bushrod at RG, or flip flopped, it’s not happening.

  62. Rockphin says:

the depth of the offensive line is still offensive. It is almost guaranteed that those five guys will not all the able to play all 19 games in the backups will cost us several

    • Young is a panty waste. Urbik is just as bad. Steen at least can still be developed because he’s young but those other two guys are at the end of their careers and they’ve done nothing with their careers to this point.

I know the argument is that every team doesn’t have great depth on the offensive line but that doesn’t preclude a team from trying. My only hope is that Brendel and Davis can take the positions from both of those guys and send them packing. At least we’d be moving in the right direction like we were when they cut loose Thomas and Turner.

      • steveccnv says:

Those are some harsh words for a couple of lineman that played well enough to help get us to the playoffs. You come across as some type of self guru. Serious question, we know Randy played in the trenches, what’s your qualification on OL insight?

      • steveccnv says:

I mean, did we already forget about guys like Colonblow, Dallas Thomas, and Billy Turner?

      • I’m sorry if you don’t like my opinion but that’s what it is.

  63. steveccnv says:

Different people see and want different prospects for our team, for different reasons, and can all be correct, for why they want them, so to disagree is fine, but to shoot them down, because we think our own opinion is correct isnt.

IT SURE would be nice if we got away from the “You’re entitled to your opinion as long as you agree with me” stand once expressed to me by a Baptist minister. But, hey, it is what it is. –I believe we are NO WHERE NEAR being good enough on the O-Line to compete successfully in the playoffs this coming season. Could I be dead wrong? You bet I can! But, AS ALWAYS, this line has to SHOW ME over the entire duration of the season. Let’s see how good they are IF they have to replace one or two starters for a few games. QUALITY DEPTH IN THE O-LINE (or lack thereof) KILLED US LAST SEASON. But, hey, it’s STILL NOT TOO LATE. There’s still time to assemble a Top-10 offensive line that will open holes for Ajayi and give Tannehill enough time to throw the ball on a consistent basis. A couple of wise moves are all that is needed to do the trick. And the Gase/Grier team has proven they ARE CAPABLE of selecting THE RIGHT PEOPLE. unlike the “DOOFUS BRIGADE” of years gone by.

    • stangerx says:

Of course we will do more on the O-Line, only question is in what way. We at least got five to line up with though.

Draft today we don’t have to go 0L (or any position) in the first. And even if not then, would be betting that one comes in the 2nd or 3rd. But then draft ain’t today and even if we do nothing before there are trades and June cut FAs after.

  65. Tim Knight says:

I’m basically neutral on how the FO wants to go about building the team. If they feel there is a prospect that can make a big impact that they’re willing to trade up for so be it. We already have a lot of young developmental type players. Adding more impact players is what will elevate this team. What really matters is the final 53 and the results on the field.

  66. Mike E. says:

I don’t think we’re done with the O-line quite yet. I’m happy Bushrod is back, he gives us good depth at OG and OT. I think we’ll be drafting at least 1 OL, and it may be as early as RD 1. I do believe though, if we go into the season with Larsen and Bushrod as our starters, we’re asking for trouble.

    • stangerx says:

My best dream would be to line up with Larsen and Bushrod as the two-backups. Would show whatever other moves we made worked. At the same time…..those two guys have lots of starts btwn them. They are both low-end starters, but also means top at next guy in as well.

      • Mike E. says:

That’s exactly how I feel Stanger. I like them as depth, but would much prefer to upgrade at both OG spots

      • Tim Knight says:

Mike, the upgrades at both OG spots will likely be unknowns at this point. Meaning a draft pick, another vet guard on the cheap like a Larsen or Bushrod, some long shots already on the roster or a UDFA. I don’t see how we can do it any other way.

  67. Tim Knight says:

Remember that Bushrod was coming off an injury, not only switched sides from left to right but from a career LT to RG. He should be more comfortable playing RG out of the gate this year opposed to last year when it was all new.

I’m sorry if you don’t like my opinion but that’s what it is.
    ————————————————————————–
I don’t have a problem with your opinion, but you don’t stop with it just being your opinion. The problem is thinking your opinion is word. You make some very good points, but others do too on the same subject, you can’t seem to get past what you see and think maybe there’s other valuable opinions too.

    • What did I say? I was pretty much agreeing with Rock’s assessment of the situation and adding in how I felt about it. If I’m wrong, time will tell. I feel my assessment of the situation is correct but if I’m proven wrong in the end I’ll admit that I was wrong.

Yeah, it’s my opinion, and that’s how I feel about things and I base my opinion on evidence that I see in watching the games, over and over and over and over. Not just once or even twice.

So, I’m not just stating some half assed opinion based on what I seem to recall being the case from games I’ve watched months ago like some national media personality.

Again, I understand it’s just my opinion but I didn’t come in here blowing up someone else’s opinion telling them they were wrong.

  70. steveccnv says:

Every year during FA people mention what a team is paying a FA, as his first year cap hit (when refiguring the current available cap space), but they seem to forget the top 51 is the cap, and when you add a new larger contract the smallest one goes off the top 51 count. In general every team has guys making the minimum about $465K, so that is what comes off the cap figure, when determining the new top 51.

    • Tim Knight says:

It’s the same with the draft. Every year fans treat all draft picks like gold when we know half of it is usually a developmental stage. That is not going to help us win this year. We need the last few draft classes to step up their game and then add at least a couple more impact players.

Then there are the fans who treat UDFAs and players not currently on teams more than who we have on our roster. So we shouldn’t worry about trading picks to target specific prospects. We can load up our roster with UDFAs and guys off the street to fill out our roster. 😉

  71. Mike E. says:

    Tim

Of course, but some of those unknowns can do very well. At the very least, I’d like 2 guys that are currently not on the roster to compete with Bushrod and Larsen, and I would much prefer a relatively early pick (RD 1-3). There may be a post draft cut that might be an upgrade over either Larsen or Bushrod too.

    • Tim Knight says:

Sure, look at how a 2014 UDFA we signed off the street in Steen sent Douglas to the PS and eventually off the team. You need to hit on some guys like that. Steen may be in play to start at guard and Larsen and Urbik the backup C/G. Then draft a prospect to compete as well and push Bushrod. You never know how it’s going to work out. But at least this new coaching staff has a better feel for the team and what they’re looking for as opposed to year one when they inherited a lot and had to learn the team along the way. Phase 2 should be more target specific.

  72. Mike E. says:

Hey BBM! Glad to see you here man!

  73. Tim Knight says:

So what positions do you feel we have glaring holes at as in nobody is proven enough to play?

    • Mike E. says:

I don’t think we have a glaring hole, but rather some weak spots. One of the LB spots may be an issue, other than Timmons and Kiko. Also, one or both OG spots. Other than age at DT and DE to be replenished for the future, I think we look pretty solid, depending of course upon team health.

      • Tim Knight says:

So a healthy Misi and an ascending player like Hewitt can’t play LB along side Timmons and Kiko? We’re only going to have 3 LBs on the field maybe 25-30% of the time anyway. Pass rush, coverage and tackling is more important to me than just harping on LB. The DL and secondary has a lot to do with that. There’s a reason Gase said I’d like to have more corners.

Look at the difference between our defense and ATL last year. Not a big difference. Neither were very good. But the Falcons’ offense changed everything. That’s what Gase wants to do, score early and often, control the clock with Ajayi and Co. and increase the snaps on offense vs. more snaps on defense. Gase didn’t know what Phase 2 could be until he saw it. That’s one of the biggest ways to improve on defense, control the scoreboard on offense. I think another team we know fairly well does that. 😉

      • Mike E. says:

        Tim

A healthy Misi is like a Mastodon, neither exists! lol

Timmons is only a stopgap at this point, I want to get some LB’s who will be here to form our dominant defense. Maybe Hewitt is a guy that might be a solid player, but I’m not counting on it.

      • Tim,
I’ll put this out there now. If we go into the season with Tunsil, Bushrod, Pouncey, Larsen and James our scoring avg on offense probably goes down.

Score early and often? How do you propose that happens. Again, LAST in league in 3 offensive categories last season: 3 and out’s, time of possession per offensive possession and # of plays per offensive possession.

That’s not changing with two backup offensive linemen starting.

      • steveccnv says:

I don’t agree Tim, Atlanta’s D had fast LBs that kicked the cheats ass, until they got tired. We weren’t close to that.

  74. I don’t believe you’ve got to have first rd picks at every position on the offensive line. I think you can find a more than capable offensive lineman in the 3rd, 4th or 5th rd if you do your homework.

If you look at the draft right now there’s guys like Adam Pankey from WVU who CBSSports.com has projected to go undrafted who may still go in the 5th or even the 4th who can develop into a nice piece of the puzzle on the offensive line.

But, I also don’t think you can continue to ignore the offensive line and expect things to change. I keep hearing that Tannehill hasn’t had an offensive line ranked above 30 the entire time he’s been in MIami. Don’t you think that should change?

How do expect it to change if Bushrod and Larsen are your starters at RG and LG?

  75. Tim Knight says:

Mike, Timmons is a stopgap for 1-2 seasons. That means this season. This is leading up to my next post. Maybe I will make it an article and send it in. 🙂

  76. Here is where I see the problem. We go into the season with Tunsil, Bushrod, Pouncey, Larsen and James as starters.
Let’s say we have Steen, Urbik and Young as the main backups again.
Pouncey goes down and Larsen kicks to center and Urbik or Steen play his RG spot. Now 3/5 of the line is backups.

    • Tim Knight says:

The same issue all 32 other teams have when IF kicks in.

What if we lose Suh and Tunsil in week 5? What if another team has the same issue? No team remains the same. You can’t build a roster based on a slew of injuries. That’s football.

So we have some solid depth right? Why not target premier prospects then who jump them? We don’t need 12 or 7 or even 5, we need like 3.

      • We need to upgrade the level of talent across the board. Offensive line, defensive line, linebacker, safety and depth in all those areas.

Maybe Larsen and Bushrod could be serviceable for us this year but they are stopgaps at best. They’re not the future for us at either guard position. How long do you kick the can down the road until you say it’s time to get two quality starters in there to play and get our offensive line out of the basement into at least the high teens as far as being effective.

Hayes is a one yr rental. Wake is a pass rush specialist at this point. Stopping the run isn’t his forte. Hayes is not the future at DE.

Allen is a one year rental. He’s not our future at safety.

We need one more starting linebacker. Timmons is a 2 yr rental at best and he’s not our future at LB.

You don’t wait until you have an actual hole to fill to address the situation. It would be nice to have a replacement at DE ready to go next year when Hayes is gone and not have him subjected to baptism by fire as a rookie. Same goes for Timmons position at LB and Allen’s position at S.

The offensive line is a completely different situation.

      • steveccnv says:

You’re killin’ me Lou. It would be nice to be solid at every position, which no team is, but you want to be solid at every position, plus have guys lined up to take over for 1 and 2 year guys like Timmons and Hayes.

  77. Tim Knight says:

Lou, focus on 2017 before the future. It can all change in an instant. Play for today as you build.

    • Tim,
When you’re in business you never just focus on the current year. You’ve always got to be looking ahead. Football is just like any other business.

You want others to be chasing you; not the other way around. You set the trends, you define what an offense or a defense looks like.

It will be interesting to see how the team approaches the draft and I’m holding out hope they stick to their guns on “trust the process”.

  83. Whether you have a salary cap or not the NFL is still a business. You can still be prepared for things like injuries or opportunities. You still want to be prepared if an opportunity to make a trade or to sign a player presents itself. It’s cap management. If you manage the cap properly you are in better shape then if you don’t.

Like it or not, Tannenbaum screwed the pooch with the Suh contract. I, for one, do not believe we need Suh to win and win consistently. He’s a darn good player but without the talent around him we can’t win anyway and that’s been proven over the first two years he been in MIA. We had other players in the past and we were giving up less than 20ppg on defense. With Suh in MIA we give up over 20ppg on defense. Doesn’t mean it’s his fault but when you throw a ton of resources at one guy it doesn’t solve your problems.

On the other end of the spectrum is the offensive line, where they decided to not throw a bunch of resources at it in free agency. I happen to believe the same as Mike, that the team isn’t finished with the offensive line and will address it further in the draft. It’s the idea that we should be happy with the line if we were to go into the season with Larsen and Bushrod as starting guards that I don’t agree with.

We did the right thing by signing OUR guys first and spending the money on our players rather than bringing in someone else’s players and spending the money on them. That formula never worked for us in the past. I’m not arguing on how the money was spent. I’m just saying that there are glaring holes on the team and just having players penciled in at positions doesn’t mean we’re ready for the season.

You go back and think about how we always had players returning season after season who were penciled in at their position just because of a lack of a better alternative and how did that turn out.
So to say there’s no holes just because we’ve got guys who have played the position before is shortsighted. And, I’m not saying the team is looking at that way either. I think they understand the situation at certain positions isn’t good and they will try to plug the holes.

Comment from a Steelers beat reporter on TImmons. Matches up with why the switch to being a tough Mike in a 4-3 might have made all the sense in the world for him. And not like many slowing down elite CBs haven’t moved to S and lots of good years after.

““At one time, Timmons was a special player in his ability to cover backs out of the backfield, tight ends, even the occasional wide receiver if an opponent’s formation isolated him in that situation.”

“But over the last couple of years, that was no longer the case, and Timmons wasn’t getting any younger or faster. Then when the Dolphins offered a contract that guaranteed Timmons $11 million over the next two years, that had to have been a deal-breaker for the Steelers because he just isn’t that kind of player anymore. Maybe in Miami, but not here.”
