The Wedge Scouting Report: Forrest Lamp

I love the feeling of riding on the back of a bullsaurus plowing through a foreign planet’s lifeforms.

They don’t stop for anyone and whatever is in front of ’em is flattened

WedgeonBullsaurus

Kind of reminds me of an NFL lineman plowing through a defensive line!

I’m not overly impressed with the linemen in this year’s draft but…

I love Lamp

Lamp5

Forrest Lamp

at 6’4, 310 pounds Lamp is the biggest prospect I’ve covered this offseason

The Western Kentucky standout is considered by many to be the top Guard in the draft.

Of course, Lamp didn’t play guard at Western Kentucky, he played tackl – 51 games at tackle in 4 years actually.

Lamp7

But most scouts project Lamp to play guard in the NFL.

Actually more often than not, scouts compare Lamp to one of the best guards int he NFL – Zach Martin.

I wonder if Lamp can do for the Dolphins OL what Martin does for the Cowboys OL?

Wouldn’t that be something?  Ajayi rushing for 200 yards each week!

If the Dolphins take Lamp with the 22nd pick – then you can expect a powerful ground game each week.

NCAA Football: Western Kentucky at North Texas

Not impressed with the Hilltoppers?

Sure its a small school and that doesn’t put a lot of players in the NFL

Well Western Kentucky has scheduled some tough out of conference teams including Alabama and LSU the last couple of years – so Lamp has faced top  college talent.

Lamp2

Lamp is good in pass protection.  He has quick feet and balance.

But what really stands out about Lamp is hi nastiness.  Lamp is going to plow through guys in the NFL when teams runs the ball.

Lamp should go early int he draft.  Mid to late first, maybe early 2nd round.  So the Dolphins probably will only get one chance at 22 to take him.

If you love Lamp like me you want to spend another first rounder on offensive line.

If I were to compare Lamp to an Alien weapon of Destruction I would compare him to the Powerful BullSaurus

Every owner can’t be a Ross. He’s talking from his situation, and as all things NFL what they say usually has nothing to do with the main issue, in this instance why he voted no. His vote was best for the Fins, and he had the balls to make his vote.

      • stangerx says:

Ain’t we lucky to have him as our owner though? And that includes having an owner for who the team is just a major hobby. Think he was sincere in what he said, but then he has enough cash where an extra say $500 mil to move to another city he can refuse just cause not such a big deal to him.

Really amazing that Lawrence Timmons signed with the Dolphins and never asked, “Where am I playing,” per Adam Gase.

    LMAO

  4. dbolt48 says:

    Steve,
It has to be better because we are drafting later in each and every round. It has to be better because Wake, Bushrod, & Timmons are all a year older and their shelf life is closer to its expiration date vs fresh date. I believe this team can probably land 2 possible starters in the first 2RDS the challenge becomes trying to land 3rd starter/ heavy contributor w/ one their 5 remaining picks. The rest need to quality developmental players that are scheme fits.

    • steveccnv says:

Are you saying the direction the team is headed in isn’t good enough, or are you saying to go farther this year we’ll have to draft better?

      • dbolt48 says:

I like the direction it’s headed, but they’ll need to draft Even better this year due to increased age at key areas and the fact they are picking later in the draft. They need to make those developmental picks count even more.

      • steveccnv says:

For what purpose? What goals are you trying to meet?

I cant in any way see how would would project to do worse this next year. Im not saying our record will be as good, or that we will for sure make the playoffs, because a lot more goes into that than just being as good a team, or even better, than last year. Other teams improve, other teams have different schedules, etc so sometimes even with a better team you have a harder path back to where you were. Still you cant look at this team and not think its is in som way improved.

Tunsil as our LT over Albert gives us a lot better chance to have a healthy LT for the span of the entire season. Tunsil not at OG, does hurt some, but with a former vet starter in his spot, or Steen/Rookie having beat them out to earn that spot, shouldnt be a huge drop off. Pouncey if he is back and healthy would be a big plus, but even if he isnt, we have a better backup situation as a replacement for him, so its a + either way. We had Bushrod at RG this past year and we will have at least his equal at RG this year, since he is back, and if someone beats him out they are better. James at RT is same as last year. I just dont see how the one loss of Tunsil at OG can offset what seems to be at least several other positive moves on our OL front.

Our TE situation is potentially better, definitely better from offensive weapon and blocking standpoint.

Our WR set is exactly as we left it with a full year of time in Gase’s system, same for Tanny.

Gase himself has a year of HC experience under him to build off, we only lost one coach, and we have replaced him with a guy who learned under him and comes from the previous coaching tree he came from.

We have our same two most dominant DT’s, one of which is preparing for a much bigger role, and therefore should give us much better production by being on the field and in better shape.

Same DE’s as last year, with better rotational/bckup depth.

Better LB corp, healthier, more experience, better reputation stopping the run. Might still be a little vulnerable to the pass, but no worse than last year.

With Jones back our safeties are much improved, Allen should be at least equivalent to Isa.

Our CB’s are same as last year with another year’s experience.

I get cautious optimism, i get (being around the board a while) the undertone of pessimism, but how can those moves not make you feel the team is in a better place? I cant think of a group than can be seen as having not gotten better, even if its is only slightly, improvement is improvement.

  7. Mike E. says:

I agree D – Even as currently constituted, our defense should be better with Timmons and Alonso, plus, Reshad will be back, and I think Allen will be fine, but I won’t be surprised if we draft a safety early. If Maxwell can start like he played the latter part of the season, we should be fine. You’re also right that our record may not be as good or better, but I think we should be a better team.

  8. Randy says:

I disagree. If this team doesn’t take another step forward…meaning actually winning a playoff game…then we haven’t improved. That’s just reality. That’s what better looks like…beating the top teams, winning 10 games or more, making the playoffs and actually being competitive. No excuses, continue to get better or continue being an average team who can beat the bad teams but can’t compete with the top teams. If this team is heading in the right direction…as everyone seems to think….that’s the next step to be taken.

    • The Flying Pig says:

I think making the post season 2 years in a row is a bench mark of sorts

      It bodes well for ’18

Course I want to win a playoff game, but lot of teams sneak into the post season as a wildcard and then disappear from the postseason again for years

If you can make it 2 years in a row, there is something good going on within the organization
Eventually of you get there you are going to win games

But getting their consistently, that really separates organizations

    • steveccnv says:

Come on Randy, that’s like saying you are what your record says you are, in other words it’s all about the stats. If we improve our run D, have less 3 and outs, compete in both games against the Cheats and win one, and look the part of a playoff team, then we’ve improved.

  9. Randy says:

I don’t quite understand why some folks are thinking we’ll have a worse record this year. What’s the thinking behind that?

    • steveccnv says:

They’re listening to the talking heads.

    • steveccnv says:

We can’t have a tougher early schedule, the team believes in Gase, Timmons improves the run D as do Hayes and Jones, the young team is more experienced…D bolt talked about a couple of guys getting older, but with that comes young guys getting better, so a + for a young team

  10. Randy says:

    steve
Improvement needs to produce more wins…or what’s the point? We can debate WHEN we will win more…maybe this year, maybe next…but ultimately the only thing that matters is wins. Ya can’t claim you’re a “better” team and still keep losing or having 8-8 or 9-7 seasons. Sooner or later it needs to result in winning more, doesn’t it?

    • steveccnv says:

I agree, but going into 2018 do you want a team that won a playoff game in 2017, by default, when they looked like one of the worst teams in the league and project down going into 2018 or do you want a team that looked like world beaters that narrowly missed the playoffs with an 11-5 record.

  11. Tim Knight says:

Gase and his staff knowing the team better, the same systems in place and continuity amongst the players could have more of an impact this year than anyone we draft.

  12. Tim Knight says:

New…Tannehill would have played Patriots if Dolphins had advanced in playoffs; brace won’t affect mobility

    • D says:

Would have been really stupid if they had done that, yeah brace would affect mobility, maybe not dramatically but it would have, but bigger would have been the chance that it could have cause the ACL to be a full rupture to go with the MCL. They would have been extremely stupid to have chanced it.

      • steveccnv says:

Agree. The D was so depleted they would’ve had no chance, just like they had no chance against Pitt.

      • Tim Knight says:

I’m not debating the injury don’t know enough about it but the playoffs and a chance to win a title is what it’s all about. Players play if they can go, especially in the playoffs.

  13. D says:

Randy there are times when you arent as good as your record and there are times when your better than your record.

I cant remember what team it was, and at this point and i cant completely remember if it was last year or the year before, but that team was losing every game in heart breaking fashion. I remember looking at that team and i was like man this team can buy a win and its sad because they have a pretty solid team. They literally lost every game from a failed last minute drive or a last minuted opponent drive for their losses and those were against playoff teams. Their record said they fucking sucked, but the team was really pretty solid and couldnt catch a break.

There are also injuries to major players that tank a season, etc. I mean you wouldn’t call Dallas a bad team would ya, but year before last they were a 5 win team because they lost Romo and didnt have anything behind him. Record doesn’t always state if you are a good team or if you improved, it can be just because everything didn’t come together. San Diego the last two years have ended their seasons with their number 1 receiver being a guy they picked up off the streets because they had so many injuries at the position. Shit happens and it doesnt necessaily mean you are a shitty team or you are worse than last year.

  14. Tim Knight says:

D, I think the comment about the brace was an addition comment moving forward. The team talked Ryan into wearing a brace when he really didn’t want to. I remember reading something a few weeks ago saying he tried a bunch of braces to find the one he’s most comfortable with and that it doesn’t hamper is mobility.

If you want to view the Adam Gase presser today as I stuck a cell phone in his face, have at it. Check timeline for second part.

Yeah were you trying to see what was up his nose and in his ears? LOL

Some good stuff though. Gase is pretty candid.

  16. son of a son of a shula says:

Thanks for posting the Gase interview Tim.
Bushrod is our RG if you have a problem with that take it up with Gase.
Pouncey is our Center, Gase wants 16 + games out of him. I like the way he thinks.

  17. D says:

Tim what i was saying is what was said by Gase in the last part of that interview.

““I think it would have been really hard for us to keep him off the field for that game,” Gase said. “It probably would have come down to us as a coaching staff making the decision what was best for him. That would have been a tough one for us. We want to do what’s best for the team. We want to do what’s best for the organization but when your starting quarterback is basically saying, I can go … I don’t know if you guys have ever seen Ryan get mad, he’s very persuasive. ”

There is a competitive fire in players that says, i want to be out there, because deep down, and any player worth his salt wants to be out there helping the team, and those same types of players generally feel confidant in being the guy that’s needed to make a difference. Still reading that, sounds to me like they weren’t confidant that was the right decision and they were prepared to argue with him about what was best for the team and organization going forward, not that they were actually feeling it was the right time to bring him back, knee brace or not. It sounds more to me like they were thinking they were going to have had to battle him to keep him off the field, but that’s also insinuates they anticipated doing it. Why fear a fight that would have been a fight? See what i mean.

Personally if i were a coach, I could give two shits what a player “wants”, unless it was best for the team. I deal with this in my job as a manager. If my employee “wants” something, if its something i can comply with, and its in the best interest of the team/company, etc. i do it. If its not and it will potentially make things much worse for us down the road, or put the company in a bad place, i look them straight in the eye and deny their request. Its not personal its business and sometimes you have to reign people back in and get them to face the reality that, yes you are important and yes we want you out there, but we want you with us long term, vs risking your future for one game, or even one championship.

What im saying is, by description of the injury, MCL full rupture, level 2 strain on the ACL, which means moderate tearing, having brought him back could have been one awkward hit from a pretty lengthy time on IR, and likely not starting this next year for first part of the season at least. Hell it could have wound up really affecting the future of his career and put the team back into a draft a QB and start over situation. You cant risk that for any playoff game, even knowing that would have been for an AFC championship, and potential trip to the Superbowl.

  18. D says:

Regardless of which brace he chooses, there will be some hindrance from mobility standpoint. Players say what they want to make people not concerned about their what level of play they will return with, but the reality is, you cant say “there will be no hinderence” because thats just not logically possible. Its a rigid piece of equipment meant to give extra stabilization, there is 0 way it wouldn’t affect mobility to some level.

    • D says:

I dont really think its going to affect his game, i fully expect him to perform his duties, but i doubt he runs as effectively as he use to. Still that’s not what he is paid to do so overall, not a big deal.

  19. dbolt48 says:

LOL…Omar Kelly calls the DC Tim Burke and gets called out by Gase😂

  20. Tim Knight says:

So if we line up right now can we win? I think we can. I think the addition of Thomas changes the offense along with the emergence of Ajayi. The defense should be more more stout, how good not sure, but better. STs should be better too with more experience. Our young K, P and return guys all have more experience. 🙂

We really didn’t lose anyone of significance in the offseason.

    • D says:

Tim the way i look at it is how do i feel about our chances to win, and i feel pretty solid. I think ill have more confidence when i see a few key part put the pads on and show us something, but in general my confidence level of can we beat most teams is up significantly

  21. D says:

Jordan Willis is definitely someone on or radar. We have now met with him a few times. I am not smitten with him but he is a solid player and looks the part of a 4-3 DE. We have had both Taco Charlton and Raekwon McMillan in as part of our 30 private visits, with the ties to Michigan and being one of the top DE’s in this draft, if Charlton is there i think he is a lock to be our pick. Would be interesting though if we have Howard, Peppers, and Charlton there, with Peppers and Charlton having Michigan ties and meeting team needs, and Howard there as a guy im sure Gase is all over taking, connection through Saban, etc. and also meeting a team need, who would we pick.

    • Tim Knight says:

Charlton would be Hayes’ replacement down the road, a solid run defender and pass rusher. We will likely also add a hybrid edge rusher to fill in for Wake and Branch in a few years. Remember, we can revisit those types of players next year as well. It doesn’t all have to be accomplished this year. Wake and Branch are part of the team in 2017. We sometimes act like they are already gone. LOL

I think this is where fans think we have so many voids. 2018 is another offseason. We can line up and compete even now before the draft. Staying relatively healthy is huge though.

    • steveccnv says:

What do you see in Taco that makes you think we’ll take him, if he’s there? The only thing I see is his ability to seal the edge. I don’t want to waste a 1st on a DE run stuffer. He’s not much of a pass rusher, and has no quick twitch.

  22. Mike E. says:

    D

Willis would probably be a 2nd RD pick, right?

  23. D says:

    ——————————————-
I see a different guy apparently. I watched a bunch of his film and there were things at first i didnt really care for, i thought he benefited a lot from Michigan having some great DT’s, but the more i watched, the more i liked him. He isnt the mold of Wake, but thats also not what you are looking for for every DE. He has good technique, and makes up for some of the quick twitch issues with good pass rush moves. He uses his hands really good to get leverage, he has a wicked swim move, and in general i didn’t see a deficient pass rusher, i just saw a different kind of one.

  24. dbolt48 says:

Taco at this moment reminds me of Coples, but w/ a better motor. Sometimes he gets caught crashing down from his DE spot opening up big run gains. Still has ability to be molded, but at this time I don’t see elite game changing ability. Matbe Carlos Dunlap might be a better comparison than Coples. If you take him in round 1, then you better take another DE inn2 or 3 who has elite traits to get after the passer.

  26. Randy says:

I would not take Taco in the first unless other guys are gone. It is #22, but I think he’ll be a pretty average NFL player. Even at 22, I’d like to get a little more if I can.

  27. My comment on being an 8-8 team this year has to do with the fact that things WILL be tougher this year than last. We made it to the playoffs and that’s a good thing. Gase got his players to buy in and that’s another good thing.

The coaches got every ounce of juice from their players and that’s another positive. However, it’s never as easy to be consistent from year to year and that’s because you’ve got to continue to add talent and get better at positions where you’re lacking and, yes, offensive line is still a major problem in my opinion.

You can’t just look at the situation and sweep it under the rug or think that Bushrod and Larsen will be good enough as starters to get the job done. The fact that we were worst in the league at 3 and out’s on offense, worst time of possession per offensive possession and lowest # of plays per offensive possession last season SHOULD concern people.

Did we have injuries? Yes, we did. But where is the improvement coming from that’s going to allow us to keep pace with everyone else? What did we do to improve the o-line? Nothing. We re-signed one of the key weak links in the line from last season. We signed a veteran o-lineman who would be great depth in case of an injury but isn’t a guy you’d want starting a full season if you could get away with it.

So, 3/5 of the line is set as long as Pouncey stays healthy. If he goes down again it’s going to be a long season. If we struggle to move the ball again this season like we did last year, and I believe nothing’s going to change there, we’re going to have difficulty scoring points and we could be looking at our scoring per game actually go down some vs last season.

I’m not being chicken little here. I’m being realistic. Right now, we’re an 8-8 team at best. If we address some issues between the draft and the next round of cuts then we could be looking at another 10-6 season.

  28. steveccnv says:

My favorite player in the draft, I’d take him #1 overall

  29. I understand the need for defensive players but if Lamp & Elflien are there in the 1st & 2nd I say take them & don’t look back.

I want an o-line like Dallas; don’t want to have to worry about who’s going to start year after year. Both are solid players who could most likely start at guard this season and if Pouncey goes down we’ve got Larsen AND Elflien who could fill in at center and Elflien could replace Pouncey at center in the future.

I’m not stopping there either. I’m all in on Adam Pankey of West Virginia who is a guard/tackle prospect we could get in the 5th and groom as a backup or an eventual starter at guard when Elflien shifts over to center.

I’m with OD. I want the o-line fixed once and for all. It’s the only part of the offense that needs to be fixed. Let’s get it done.

      Good one
I had a similar mock with Barnettt and Elfein
But in the 2nd I had Feeney and not another pass rusher

Do you think 2 pass rushers in the 1st and 2nd is overkill?

I like Barnett a lot and he is one of my top targets

      • dbolt48 says:

If Willis is there in the second I take him. Barnett plays RDE & Willis is similar to Wake at LDE. If I’m in the FO I’m doubling down and if I can get 2 high caliber DE’s especially one w/ Willis’s freaky athletic ability in RD 2….I take that shot 24/7.

      • dbolt48 says:

Now if Willis wasn’t there I may have gone OG or FS then came back to DE, Daeshon Hall, in round 3.

  32. Tim Knight says:

I agree that if you draft a guy like Taco you should also add more of a pure edge rusher. That said, we don’t have to do all of that this year having Wake and Branch.

    • dbolt48 says:

Problem w/ that is who replaces Wakes athleticism? Neither Taco nor Branch can give you anything similar.

      • Tim Knight says:

Well Branch plays the other side. So Hayes and Taco would be the big DEs and Wake and Branch as more the rush ends. I’m not saying we should draft Taco, just if we did. We could add a speed rusher as well, but we could also do that next year. Unless you’re asking if Wake went down?

  33. D says:

Id much rather have Derek Barnett than Charlton, BUT i do not see Derek Barnett dropping to 22. I think another guy who will be a surprise that he goes a lot higher than most would expect is Daeshon Hall, i think when all is said and done he is a 2nd round selection, maybe even a really early selection in the second.. Id almost like him as much as Charlton, but i dont think either make it to us by the second, so IMO Charlton is a safe take at 22, plenty to work with, plenty of upside. I wouldnt freak out over Charlton at 22 like is seems some of you might would. I dont think you can call him Coples, because there were TONS of examples of Coples turning out just as he did,

Charlton doesnt seems to half ass any plays, in fact one of the favorites around here, Lawson does, i promise you if you want his videos, and you look at the plays away from his side you will see him put up little effort. I LOVED lawson last year, and i dont know if he was playing it safe because he already had one bad injury that set back his draft status and made him stay an extra year, or what, but either way, he can and will turn that motor off and thats kinda bullshit IMO.

Im not so much PRO any one particular pick in the first, because i know they will pick who they want, but i have to believe that for several reasons, and quality being one of them, they have him high on their board. Its not my opinion of Charlton that will make that pick, but check out the fact they have had him in for a private visit, check out the fact they met with him at combine and pro day, and the random factor of Ross liking Michigan guys (which probably plays in very little but ya know, he is the Boss lol) and i think you have a very glaring fact that they would take him and they think he would be a DE of the future for us.

  34. D says:

You could easily pair Charlton with a guy like Dimick, Smoot, Phillips, Cox Jr., out of day 3, or if you wanted to be very agressive and get a replacement for Wake THIS YEAR, double up day 2 and get a Willis, Hall, or Rivers to be the Wake replacement. You guys do realise there is a next year and there are some seriously talneted DE nxt year too….just sayin.

  35. D says:

I think one of either CHartlon, Peppers, or Howard makes it to us, possibly 2, but its only a remote possibility. I think whichever makes it to us is the most likely pick, If Reddick, or Foster ae there as well i think it makes the selection an interesting one, but way things have been going, i doubt they do. Cunningham i think might be in play but i dont think they would take him over any of those 3. There are a few other players that might be there that would give them pause to think about it, but over all i am thinking one of those three will be our pick at 22.

    • D says:

Thats also assuming that they stay put and dont try to trade up for someone.

      • D says:

I actually could see them trading up, but unless something terribly wrong happens, i doubt they trade back. There just isnt a ton of value trading back unless we got a team willing to sacrifice a lot of trade value just to lock down their pick. That happens, but i doubt seriously we would get anything north of a 3rd to drop back, and for the third it would be a pretty decent drop back in the first.

  36. dbolt48 says:

Tim….I was definitely talking in case Wake goes down.

They may already have a plan they are comfortable with though, maybe they are comfortable with Fede stepping in and or moving Branch to the LDE,. They may also compensate as i said, by using an OLB on the line for the wide rushes. Outside of the wide 9 technique, a speed rushers isnt necessarily a big plus in our defense.Last year they rarely lined Wake up wide too, like i was saying, they used LB’s in the 9 position.

There isnt really a set position or type that wont work if you have a DC who has some flexibility, again, look to what they do not what feels natural. QB. especially Brady hard feel pressure from the fastes pass rusher because he has the ball out so fast, so that guy becomes less of a factor and a guy who plays the run, or pushes the pocket is better than a guy who uses speed to come around the outside.

  37. D says:

Speed rushers have their draw backs, they usually are one injury away from being ineffective. Anythign that hampers that speed and their game drops off big. With the FA signings being run support DE’s, i wouldnt put it past them that an attribute they place a high value on is whether the DE can seal off the edge and if they play the wide 9 like they did last year (even with Wake in there) they didnt use the DE’s as the wide guy, they brought a LB up to give them the wide rush guy. I just think there iss too much hard coding of peoples belief in what or whom we need to replace whom. I also think its a lot easier to read the tea leaves as they are being laid out before you than it is to assume we know what type of players they want. They have been showing us much different pattern in moves they have made, people they have spoken with, people they traded for, people they brought in from FA.

  38. D says:

The great thing about Wake is that unlike a lot of other speed rushers, he is generally very solid run defense, so he is going to be hard to replace in one person period.

    • dbolt48 says:

That’s why I specified Willis & Hall….I do believe Hall has an explosive element also, but both can hold up against the run.

  39. D says:

The most Wake like person i see in this draft is, and i think you have to factor in Wake when he came out of college vs the Wake with almost 10 years of NFL experience, but Smoot and the guy from FAU Hendrickson both looks really good. Hendrickson has the motor of Wake, and some really good speed rush moves, but i could see him becoming a real beast in the NFL, wont be immediate replacement but with Wake mentoring him, and him having a chance to develop and share time before having to fully replace, i think he is a guy to look at this year too. Smoot im not sure if his motor runs as high as Wake, but not many’s do, but after he makes his move and is successful, he smells blood in the water and the motor hits a whol other level, what i think people see in him that knocks his motor is when he has to fight through a block, sometimes he doesnt seem to have that same determination. I think either of these guys with Wake as their Mentor couldget there though.

I’ll disagree on Smoot, but Hendrickson might have that ability profile.
    ——————————————
Smoot has the ability, im just not sure about the drive. Thats something you really cant see until they start playing, unless of course its really out of whack like with Coples, and even then you might have someone that just kicks it in gear when they make it to the NFL. Its juts not a exact science rooting out that quality.

    • D says:

For what its worth, i agree about Hall as well but i think with his size and height specifically, he will be a good bit different than Wake. Part of whakes ability is he gets his shoulder down under the blocker and ensures his position on the outside of the player and then drives through them which puts him on the tightest arc to the QB possible. I think Hall will have to use his length and swim his guy, or use his arm length to keep the blocker away from his body. I dont think he can get the shoulder under theirs to get that very tight arc to the QB. Wake is really unique in a lot of aspects, again, thats why i think you dont have to focus on replacing him with a speed rusher, you have to look to replace as many aspects of what he does with whatever player can give you the most. Hall is one of those guys that if we take him, i think we have a future replacement for Wake, but he isnt a right now guy, neither are many, in fact probably none fully replace him, including Garrett or Barnett.

      • D says:

You can see what i mean on many plays where Wake gets taken down with an arm around the neck (and then no penalty flag is thrown, still very frustrated with those non calls, as he had probably 6 more sacks last year if they hadn’t held him or we would have had several more penalties in our favor). They have to grab him like that because his sholderpads are under their outside arm and they have nothing to divert him or slow him down but to just grab his head.

  42. D says:

DBolt, i really dont think Willis is a great run defender, i think he is a pretty solid pass rusher, but i think he takes some plays off, (its a minor issue) and i think he lacks the ability to take on blockers against the run, and he doesn’t always set a good edge. I think part of that is technique so id be good with taking him in the second and letting him learn, but i dont think he is a guy we could have take over for wake in case of injury either. I guess what im saying is, if Wake drops out this year, outside of Barnett, or Garrett i think we wind up either altering our scheme to compensate or we have a good sized drop off. I dont think it matters much if its Hall, or Willis, or Smoot or Hendrickson, i think we are in the same boat.

  43. D says:

Wake won me over with the last two recoveries from his injuries with the level of production afterwards. He is a true freak of nature, and there is no telling how long he will be able to do this. You really cant count him out of anything.

The Wake move where he gets his shoulders lower than the OL, is actually a Michael Jordan move. I’ve used it playing BB it works great. I did it one time in a game and the defender claimed it was illegal, I just laughed.

  48. dbolt48 says:

    D,
In regards to losing Wake, the D would have to make some form of an adjustment no matter what, as no rookie can replace Wake. You still want a player who can replicate his traits. In regards to Willis, I feel he sets the edge fine even though he can can get caught inside once in a while…..not as glaring as Taco. He has the ability to bend and flatten to the QB perfectly fine. My biggest thing I’d like to see him improve on is being able to string multiple counters together, which is true if most rookies outside of Garrett.

  49. dbolt48 says:

    D,
I know exactly what you mean by Wake getting low forcing the OL to tackle by his head.

    • D says:

That shit started to really piss me off last year, he was taken down like that so many times and ref’s just let it go. I mean just blatantly obvious take downs, they must be doing an “its almost unfair” adjustment for the RT’s that face him because it was too consistent not to be on purpose lol.

  50. here’s a list of players I want in the draft:
    Forrest Lamp
    Pat Elflien
    Carroll Phillips
    Duwuane Smoot
    Damontae Kazee
    Shelton Gibson
    Adam Pankey
    Dante Barnett
    Randall Goforth
    Tanner Vallejo
    CJ Beathard
That’s my list and I’m sticking to it.

  51. D says:

DBolt i think you and i are about the reverse on Charlton and WIllis, im a little down on Willis, and i think you are kinda down on Charlton, may be that you wouldnt take Charlton, but im not sure if thats fully the case, i would take Willis, but no higher than second round, and i honestly think he might slide to the third.

    • D says:

Lou, with Shelton Gibson, what are you thinking with him? Make the team as a WR6 and maybe ST’s contributor, primarily KR? You think he would beat out Mighty Mouse? or maybe just a practice squad stash guy? I think here is an outside chance he would get a 6-7th round selection, but likely would be a UDFA, just not sure if he is someone you think would make the team this year or is he a talent you want to see develop and possibly make the team in case of injury or a couple years down the road?

      • D says:

Sorry this was supposed to be a stand alone post not a reply to something that obviously it doesnt match with,

      • because you never stop adding talent to the team regardless of whether or not you feel you’re “stacked” at a certain position.

we don’t know exactly what will happen this season. for instance, Carroo could ball in camp & get more & more opportunity during the season in the offense; especially if he’s putting up pts for us. what do we do if that happens? if we have another guy who you just can’t keep off the field because of what he brings to the table what do you do?

what if Landry is still making a lot of catches but Caroo becomes a huge scoring threat in the redzone?

again, I look at it as you never stop adding talent. we took Carroo last year in the drat with Landry, Parker & Stills on the team. A lot of fans didn’t understand that because they say we’re “stacked” at the position.

So what if we are? Is that a bad thing? If you have an overabundance of talent at a position maybe it allows you to move someone for a player who can help out at another position like on defense.

Gibson is a guy that could develop into a player that’s at least as good as an Austin or Lockett IMO. 5th rd is the latest he’s going.

  52. If I’m looking at a small school guy earlier he better have been dominant at his position in the conference he played in because if he’s not than he shouldn’t be taken earlier than the 5th rd.

You have an edge guy from a small school who did nothing but rush the passer and didn’t play vs the run much that’s setting him way back vs the bigger school guys. 9 sacks for a guy from a small school is not dominant.

    • Tim Knight says:

Like Fede for Instance. He’s a solid depth/role DE but not the pass rusher he was at a small school like Marist against low level competition.

  53. stangerx says:

    A couple interesting headlines.

1 –“Here’s why Oakland Raiders fans are flipping to the Miami Dolphins”
    2 — “A pity Dolphins owner doesn’t own Chargers”
    ————-

Doubt many Raider or Charger fans will be buying Wake jerseys, but word on Ross is getting out.

    • Tim Knight says:

Ross believes in “Best In Class”. He didn’t jump in as an owner and get wild. He took baby steps and learned through trial and error. I think he’s on the right path. He really started his influence from a football standpoint in the 2011 offseason. We all know the history.

      • stangerx says:

Yep — He at least knew enough to know at first that he did not know much about running a football team on the field (even if had ideas on the business side). He has always know when it feels like it is running right though. And that is only in part about wins and losses.

  54. dbolt48 says:

    D,
I need regards to Charlton….I just wouldn’t pick him until late RD2….but there’s people in the NFL circles that have better tape and info that love him. In regards to Willis he has the pure athleticism to be much more than Charlton….actually the ability to be the 2nd best DE in the draft. With that said I’d still take Barnett before himdue to his solid floor.

    • Wills did better in the drills at the Combine than I expected. He’s a pure speed rusher at this point and lacks the full compliment of moves which, of course, will come in time at the next level.

My concern with him is that he absolutely sucks against the run and I mean he’s horrible. Again, he showed well in the Combine drills which are easy to prepare for when you train for them but it doesn’t show up on tape. He shows little ability to change direction; gets beat around his end by rb’s all the time and when he needs to change direction to make a play vs the run he’s show the inability to do so.

If we do take a chance on him I would hope we don’t use a 1st or even a 2nd on him.

  55. Just think what Duwuane Smoot did WITHOUT the other guys on the defensive line other DE’s had the luxury of playing with.

I’ll take the Smoot/Phillips combo in this draft. Biggest upside of anything out there.

    • dbolt48 says:

I know you like Smoot…I’m not a fan. Phillips though, yeah I’ll take him on this team. Although I’d still prefer him as an OLB vs DE which is where Miami told him they like him.

      • I’d prefer him at OLB as well and then add his pass rushing ability on 3rd down. But, if you look at Smoot objectively along with all the other DE’s who will be available to us at #22 and beyond, he’s the best of the bunch.

He puts on a little more weight and hits the weights he’s growing into a dominant force at DE. Quickest off the ball of any of the guys at DE and he plays the run better than most of the other guys too. He’s extremely strong for his size already. When he becomes a pro and hits the weight room he’s going to get even better.

If he actually does fall as far as what I’ve seen him projected by most somebody is getting themselves one hell of a steal.

Put it this way, I’d take him in the 4th any day over Taco in the 1st rd.

  56. If there ever was a year where this team could finally put the issues of the offensive line to rest it’s this year. If Grier has a shot at Lamp in the 1st & Elflien in the 2nd why would you not take it and be done with the line once and for all instead of allowing the issues to continue to linger.

Maybe one could argue that we could be “okay” with Bushrod and Larsen at the guard spots but why in the hell would you want to just be “okay” with that scenario when you can get two guys who can be the present AND future on the o-line for many years to come.

I’m sorry my Phins friends. If these guys are there when we’re on the clock in the 1st and 2nd you can have your Peppers, Charltons and whomever. I’d be running to the podium to take them.

    • steveccnv says:

We have bigger needs, than to take 2 OL in the first 2 rounds. I like both Elflein and Lamp, and wouldn’t complain, if that happened, but this team doesn’t value OG enough to take them with a first round pick, at least that’s what Mando says, and from what I’ve seen I believe it.

      • yeah, what could be a bigger need than to keep your qb upright or give him the time he needs to execute the plays properly, to find the open receiver and push the ball up the field instead of dumping it off underneath.

and, don’t get me wrong, I’m not being snippy towards you it’s just that the offensive line has been a problem for so long and now that they’ve finally got a shot to put those issues to rest they’re going to decide to go in a different direction. just boggles the mind a team would do something like that.

I just don’t get that if Gase truly thinks Tannehill is the guy and he wants him to be able to get the job done and he wants to be able to run the ball then why wouldn’t they make the attempt to put the offensive line issues to rest once and for all.

ppl point out time and again how bad the offensive line has been, ranked 30th in the league I believe someone said, and they won’t address it. we have bigger needs. well, if the o-line was ranked 30th in the league last season what could be a bigger need than that?

      • steveccnv says:

We couldn’t stop Pitt or NE, and by taking those OL in the 1st and 2nd you’re surely not taking BPA.

      • How can you say that? Consider who could be there at #22 and tell me there would be a player there that’s better than Lamp. Grier said it’s not just BPA but the best player for the team. If you’re looking at DE like Charlton, a LB like Cunningham and Lamp you can’t argue that the other two are overwhelmingly a better choice for the team. You just can’t.

  57. I think we could look at the Pittsburgh game either way. yeah, Pittsburgh ran all over us in that game but, by the same token, we didn’t run all over them. Ajayi had just 33 yds compared to Bell’s 167. If we controlled the ball by running it could we have been more competitive?

  58. Plus, we led the league in 3 and out’s because when we faced 3rd down and tried to pass for the 1st the opposing D got the pressure they needed to stop us.

    • steveccnv says:

Again stats. When the line was healthy it was dominant.

      • you are forgetting one thing. when it was healthy it consisted of Albert, Tunsil, Pouncey, Bushrod & James with Bushrod being the weak link. Now Albert is gone and we have two weak links in Larsen & Bushrod.

Second thing you’re missing on is the run blocking for Ajayi in the game where he was healthy was good because they moved James to the left side with Albert & had Young playing RT and lined up a TE on the left too and we ran the ball to the left a lot with that.

Third thing is the run blocking was good but the pass blocking still wasn’t where it needed to be. We still faced way too many 3rd down situation where the D got pressure quickly and Tannehill was forced to get the ball out too fast.

I’m finally agreeing with people that we need to do a better job of protecting our qb and giving him time to find the open receiver and everyone’s so hell bent on defense they don’t care anymore. Bizzaro world.
