The Wedge Scouting Report: Forrest Lamp

I love the feeling of riding on the back of a bullsaurus plowing through a foreign planet’s lifeforms.

They don’t stop for anyone and whatever is in front of ’em is flattened

WedgeonBullsaurus

Kind of reminds me of an NFL lineman plowing through a defensive line!

I’m not overly impressed with the linemen in this year’s draft but…

I love Lamp

Lamp5

Forrest Lamp

at 6’4, 310 pounds Lamp is the biggest prospect I’ve covered this offseason

The Western Kentucky standout is considered by many to be the top Guard in the draft.

Of course, Lamp didn’t play guard at Western Kentucky, he played tackl – 51 games at tackle in 4 years actually.

Lamp7

But most scouts project Lamp to play guard in the NFL.

Actually more often than not, scouts compare Lamp to one of the best guards int he NFL – Zach Martin.

I wonder if Lamp can do for the Dolphins OL what Martin does for the Cowboys OL?

Wouldn’t that be something?  Ajayi rushing for 200 yards each week!

If the Dolphins take Lamp with the 22nd pick – then you can expect a powerful ground game each week.

NCAA Football: Western Kentucky at North Texas

Not impressed with the Hilltoppers?

Sure its a small school and that doesn’t put a lot of players in the NFL

Well Western Kentucky has scheduled some tough out of conference teams including Alabama and LSU the last couple of years – so Lamp has faced top  college talent.

Lamp2

Lamp is good in pass protection.  He has quick feet and balance.

But what really stands out about Lamp is hi nastiness.  Lamp is going to plow through guys in the NFL when teams runs the ball.

Lamp should go early int he draft.  Mid to late first, maybe early 2nd round.  So the Dolphins probably will only get one chance at 22 to take him.

If you love Lamp like me you want to spend another first rounder on offensive line.

If I were to compare Lamp to an Alien weapon of Destruction I would compare him to the Powerful BullSaurus

I was just thinking about this comment. If there were some way to the front office had more than one chance to get him at 22 it would be a coup! I’m not sure how that would work but it would have to be some real outside-the-box thinking!

  2. Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

Good article Piggy. I have no problem taking Lamp @22. In fact, he’s definitely in my top five at that spot.

  3. Some people I’ve spoken to, and I’m talking fans, don’t think MIA should “waste” a first rd pick on an offensive lineman. When you have a talent like Lamp it’s hard to ignore him and if he’s there when you pick at #22 and you’ve got Cunningham, Reddick, Tak and Taco there with him it’s a tough decision.

    Good job Piggy.

  4. Tim,
Maybe you think there’s glaring holes anywhere on the team but just saying there’s guys there who have played before doesn’t mean there’s no holes.

Thinks about the past when we had guys like John Jerry on the offensive line and others as well who were penciled in every year at their positions due to a lack of a better alternative and where did that get us. Nowhere.

To say the NFL isn’t a business just because it has a salary cap is short-sighted at best. Teams need to manage their cap space properly in order to maximize opportunities and minimize the effect injuries have on their team. They need to be ready when an opportunity to sign or trade a player presents itself or when they experience injuries like we did last season and need to bring someone in to take the place of an injured player.

So teams always need to be thinking ahead and not just thinking about this week or this month or this year. In that respect, it’s a lot like other businesses. No team is going to be surprised at the end of the season when they look at their free agents who will hit the market and say, “gee, we didn’t think all these guys were going to need to be signed”. And all teams are aware of the free agents from other teams as well.

I, for one, didn’t like the Suh signing and think Tannenbaum screwed the pooch with his contract. It tied our hands with what we’re able to do with respect to bringing in talent. He’s a hell of a player but he’s just like everyone else in that he can’t do it all on his own. In fact, our defense was better under Mike Nolan and he didn’t have Suh.

But, more to the point, I’m with Mike in that I don’t think the team is finished with the offensive line and think they will address it in the draft. Just penciling in guys at positions and saying we’re set doesn’t means there’s no holes. You have to face the fact as a team that there is holes and do what you need to do to plug them. Otherwise, this team runs the risk of wasting the entire career of it’s beloved qb.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Lou — big difference btwn saying “we are set” and “we could be set” when talking about whether there need be a big name FA signing or a first round OL pick. And think you will be hard pressed to find anyone who thinks there won’t be at least one more person not currently on the roster who has at least a legit compete tag coming into camp. My guess is there will be two.

  5. I went back and watched Bushrod in the game vs Pittsburgh where Ajayi had his breakout performance. He did pretty much nothing the entire game. Run blocking and pass blocking.

  6. Tannehill is 29 yrs old when the season starts. How long can the team go without addressing the offensive line?

  7. A lot of people dropping the ball on Adam Pankey. If he’s there in the 5th because teams are passing up on him I definitely want him as one of our picks. CBSSports.com has him going undrafted but from a talent perspective and a versatility perspective, can play guard or tackle, he’s got to go higher than that.

My hope is he makes it to us in the 5th and we take him. He’s a very physical player who plays to the whistle.

  8. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Well done Pig — And love that Lamp has that nasty sneak. We have some quality guys on the OL but that nasty seems to have been missing. Apparently Larsen has it too. So seem the coaches see the need too, and might make Lamp more likely for us.

  9. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

And I posted a couple on the old blog.

Comment from a Steelers beat reporter on TImmons. Matches up with why the switch to being a tough Mike in a 4-3 might have made all the sense in the world for him. And not like many slowing down elite CBs haven’t moved to S and lots of good years after.
    ———————
““At one time, Timmons was a special player in his ability to cover backs out of the backfield, tight ends, even the occasional wide receiver if an opponent’s formation isolated him in that situation.”

“But over the last couple of years, that was no longer the case, and Timmons wasn’t getting any younger or faster. Then when the Dolphins offered a contract that guaranteed Timmons $11 million over the next two years, that had to have been a deal-breaker for the Steelers because he just isn’t that kind of player anymore. Maybe in Miami, but not here.”

There is a rumor out there that Zach Brown is currently in Davie and close to a deal with us. I can’t validate this at all, so take it for what it’s worth… a mere rumor.

  12. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

We’re at $20.4M in cap space, not counting Julius Thomas and Jermon Bushrod; we’ve got ‘roughly’ $13M in cap space. We can easily afford Zach Brown.

  13. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

M13 — For sure we can sign Brown. He will be looking for a long-term deal, least the first year of it would be just a bit over a push for cutting Misi next season. And no way does one happen without the other.

Really like how it is all working. We didn’t bring in the hot splash, locked down our own who we wanted, closed some holes and then began shopping for upgrade bargains. Whether it works out or not with Brown, real happy to be the team that players only go to after reality sets in on the visits before. Means we are sticking to our value numbers.

  14. dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

    ———
YUP! And we COULD have signed Dontari Poe to long bread as well… but we didn’t. Point? I think Tannenbaum has changed, and for the better. He’s no longer throwing money away as he once did when he was GM of the stej.

So that stated, I don’t think Tannenbaum will throw the kitchen sink at Zach Brown. Thus, this is merely a visit and not a presumed ‘done deal’ (not that anybody has stated that it’s a ‘done deal’, either). I sense a two-year deal for reasonable $$$ will be offered (see Julius Thomas and Lawrence Timmons)… we’ll see if Brown accepts.

My question would be: IF we sign Brown (making 3 starting LBs in Kiko, Timmons, and him over the next 2 years), does that push the DE position up in our Draft… or does that push the LB position up in our Draft being we have vets on the cheap and merely short-term solutions at the LB position?

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

      BPA

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Only at an area of need, and we have many. In other words, I’m not drafting QB Deshaun Watson if he falls to us, just because he’s the BPA… that would be absolutely ridiculous unless we’re trading Tannehill before the ’17 season even begins.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

You need to talk to Chris Grier about that. LOL

I also don’t think we have many needs.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Not sure how having Brown on the team for two years would do anything other than make us less likely to go LB in the draft up top. Would make more likely in other areas, including DE. But same would go for DT, DB, OL and pure BPA.

  19. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Tim — whatever Brown’s numbers were before, he played for $1.25 mil as a FA last year before the great season. Not sure the reasons why, but that is what he did after checking out his options. And at his age was for one-year. Must be some reason on that.

Yes, we’ve got many needs for the future. We’re currently filling out our roster with FAs to be competitive in ’17. The DRAFT dictates our future. I like the “process” that we’re implementing to be relevant both NOW and in the future.

If you believe Mando, Lamp won’t be our pick. He says we don’t value OG enough to pick in the first or pay high FA money.

    • D's avatar D says:

Lamp isn’t in my top 5 of possibles at 22. That’s not to say I devalue OL at 22, nor does it mean I devalue Lamp, I just think we could have better on the board. If Lamp is there and he is the best player on their list, then it’s not an overdraft, waste or forgoing a need, it’s the right pick, and if he is there or peppers or whomever and they take someone else, again it’s the right decision.

The draft speculation is for fun, it’s for us to spend some time thinking about different picks and trying to come up with a short list of people we think we will be happy with, but it’s not our pick and they aren’t asking our opinions so just roll with it and understand they want who the want for their own reasons.

As much as I love it I’m about over it, especially when people start to get overly arrogant with their opinions and/or accuse others of not coming to their opinions of their own valition. If we want to keep this fun for everyone I wish that everyone could just keep that in mind.

Not directed in any way at you Steve I just happened to reply from this one. It’s also not specifically pointed at any one person since we can all be guilty of it from time to time, it just seems to be ramping up recently and I wanted to point it out and hope it trends in the other direction some.

  24. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I don’t know what Grier is doing? We’ve got lots of depth issues and guys with contracts expiring in the next few years. If this were a real business he’d be fired.

  25. Steve,
And you offer nothing of substance. You come on here and all you do is disagree with me but you offer nothing else other than saying I’m wrong. If I’m wrong about Bushrod then show me where I’m wrong but just disagreeing with me for the sake of disagreeing with me is poor.

If I didn’t know any better I’d say there’s some jealousy there because of how much I AM correct on things.

So #Raiders re-signed LS Jon Condo; signed QB E.J. Manuel and LB Jelani Jenkins today.

  29. Now, if we can sign Brown and he can play for us over however long he’s with the team like he did for BUF that will go a long way to helping us; especially when it comes to the draft.

And Tim, this is where I think maybe you misunderstand me. I want to win now too. I’m tired of not competing or not being competitive anymore and that’s why I just want us to get to the point from a personnel view where we can stop worrying about getting those upgrades at the positions we’ve discussed, like guard.

You want to win now and I’m there with you. My concern is if we go into the season with 2 backups at guard and Pouncey gets injured then we’ve got three backups on the line and that blows up your whole season; assuming those two backups were doing their jobs and the season wasn’t blown up already.

  35. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Lamp isn’t in my top 5 either

Of guys I think might be there at 22
I have Cunnigham as my top prospect at 22
    Then peppers
Then a bunch of edge guys like Barnett it Tak
    Then Reddick
    Then lamp

I’ve been pounding the pig drum for defense
And secondly a little more quietly – big school prospects

So that’s the issue I have with Reddick and Lamp
I don’t really have an “issue” with them
I would be happy if we took either at 22

But my inclination is to not take a guy from western Kentucky or Temple in the 1st round
It seems like a tougher transition

Im underwhelmed with out OL pickups in FA
But i don’t think it’s a very good draft for OL
The best interior OG being from western Kentucky speaks volumes to me about that

We usually see big conference interior OL projected in the 1st
And I don’t see that this year

Don’t anything about him. What round?

      • I’d like to see him be one of our 5th’s but I think he ends up going higher. Like I said yesterday, CBSSports.com has him going undrafted and I haven’t seen a single mock with him in it to this point but if you watch this kid play he’s a beast.

He’s played both LT and G at WVU and likes guard better because he likes the physical aspect of the position. That’s one of the things I like about the kid. He’s physical. And, he can move. Gets to the 2nd level nicely and he plays to the whistle.

Not much to look at in terms of cut ups on YouTube so I had to watch a bunch of WVU games instead. He’s going to be a good one. The type of o-lineman the Pats take later and get a starter out of him.

He’s 27. He’s productive. He can play all 3 LB positions. He evidently won’t break the bank. What’s not to like?

If we do sign him, I see us rotating him, Kiko and Timmons at all three spots based on formations and personnel. Who is the best fit to play where and when. I think us having his LB coach Frank Bush his first 4 years in the league with TEN could be a big factor. Also our new DC Matt Burke has been a LBs coach his entire career. I could see this happening.

  41. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

    Still SMH over this deal;

For the record, Ndamukong Suh is nearly untouchable as any restructure would further elevate his cap number in the latter years. Suh’s cap hit will balloon to $26 million next season along with a $22 million hit if released or traded. In 2019 that number jumps to $28 million with $13 in dead money if released. Even in 2020 Suh’s $22 million cap number carries $4 million in dead space

    • yep, I’ve been saying the same thing for months. Tannenbaum screwed the pooch with that contract. we had a better defense when Nolan was here and we didn’t have Suh.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

That should tell you something about the direction this team is going in. I don’t think we had to sign Suh either and I didn’t think we would at the time, but… you don’t have him on the payroll looking to build for the next 2-3 years. Just saying. 😉

Look at it this way, Ross hires Tannenbaum in 2015, Mr. T signs Suh, 2016 we end an 8 year playoff drought. Just saying. 😉

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Is what it is….still a great player that will be here for the next two seasons absent trade or injury. And he has been pretty much what we expected him to be. He was even better last season than the first.

  42. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Thanks Lou on Pankey. He’s got good size at 6-4 313 as well. That’s about the size range I think we’ll target. Maybe even as low as 300. The ZBS is an interesting concept. It allows athletic OL to handle overpowering DL. Kind of like some martial arts. Use the other guy’s power against him. Let him attack and trap him. Now pass pro is a little different. LOL

  43. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Lou, just saying what we’re doing, how and the results. This team is not thinking down the road. They want to win now. It’s written all over the wall. 😉

    • I’ve seen it in the bathroom. It’s true. lol. I believe they want to win now. I agree with you on that & they may even believe the roster is good enough right now for them to win now. But, does it mean it’s going to happen? I hope so. But, I still want to continue to build for the future because I want to win now and next yr and the year after that and the year after that.

I want consistency. We had teams in the past where they went batshit crazy in FA to build to win now and we sucked. So, I don’t want to try and win now and then suck for another 8 years.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

If you go through the roster a big portion of it is through the draft. But as the years roll on some good players are going to want to be paid. It’s hard to keep everything in tact. You have to go for it sometimes and hope you sustain it.

      • I think we are on the right path if we don’t deviate. Some players will get paid and some will move on. Some may not work out. But, we’re at a point right now where we can do one of two things.

Stick with what’s working or deviate and royally fuck everything up. If we go off our board and “trust the process” like we’ve heard so many times and resist the temptation to make a stupid move we can get solid and stay solid because we “trusted the process”. That’s all we need to do. We don’t need to “go for it”.

Packers draft and develop and they are one of the more consistent teams in the league. Not big players in free agency. Neither are the Steelers and they don’t like to pay their own guys a lot of the time either. But, they’re very good at finding talent and developing it.

We’ve gotten away from the mentality that made us perennial losers, and I believe that started with Hickey, and are now on the path where we can be one of the best team every year from here on out. But, we’ve got to be smart about it.

They’re getting their information from initial reports from beat writers and such and just regurgitating the same shit again and again like they have anything new to offer on the subject.

How many times has he tried to destroy us and his acme bullsaurus ran over a cliff while Wedge is watching a football game

  57. I gotta say that with Wake, Hayes, Suh, Phillips and Branch on the defensive line and then Alonso, Timmons and if we sign Brown our front seven on defense is looking a lot better.

Wake will be limited in his snaps and be our pass rush guy and Hayes is a guy who can play the run very well. With him next to Suh and whomever we’ve got playing that side on LB it’s a lot better situation than what we had vs the run.

Branch isn’t bad vs the run either. Maybe not as good as Hayes but there were times last year where the d-line was doing it’s job and no linebacker was able to fill and make the stop. With a healthy Jones in the mix we may actually be able to do something vs the run this season; especially if we get that other LB spot filled.

  58. Well, here it is Tim. this is exactly what you’ve been talking about. MIA has a chance to plug up a hole on the D and get the front 7 talent elevated to the point where we’ve got a good shot at improving markedly vs the run in ’17, IF they sign Brown?

So, here is the “go for it” moment. I, for one, would have no qualms with making this move.

  59. I’d say right about now MiA is just hammering out the specifics of the contract w/bonus & base each yr over it’s life.

    I think it’s going to be 4yrs/$24m, $18m guar., $10m bonus, with $2M base yr 1.

If Miami does sign Brown then I believe they draft either of these guys as Timmons understudy:
    Anthony Walker
    Elija Lee
    Ben Gedeon

Walker needs a pro program to help him develop his body at an ideal playing weight. Lee just needs to add a little more strength. Gedeon needs to be a little less white🤣….actually just needs to get some time to develop within the system. I think all 3 are guys that can develop into quality starters.

    • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

Jordan Evans of OU is another guy they could groom behind all 3 starters. Elite athlete at the position.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

But Walker and Lee are exactly 2 guys I was thinking about as draft targets that wont need to play in 2017 if we sign Brown

I like both players and think rah can be good nfl players in time

  64. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

This is just awful – A huge reason for voids on the roster. We went into that draft with such promise, armed with (1) 1st RD pick (#12), (2) 2nd RD picks (#42, #54), (2) 3rd RD picks (#77, #82), (1) 4th RD pick (#111), (1) 5th RD pick (#146) and (3) 7th RD picks (#217,224,250)

Such a shame we threw away that draft . . . especially considering that DFF is the last remaining player, couldn’t be any more ironic

M13, about that coaching/assisting gig, they didn’t need me. I went to their game that night and they won 46-0 and had won 5 in a row with a combined score of 148 – 6. They have a real attacking defense and have averaged 2 defensive TD’s a game. They have a lot of talent on that team, young and old. Most of the young guys are non-contract/non-paid players so it won’t ruin their college eligibility. The coach of UWF was there checking out players. I just gave their WR’s some tips on getting in the heads of the opposing DB’s, setting them up for a different move later in the game. Don’t just rely on your athleticism. Things like that.

6’4″, 190, 4.5, huh? He’s a got a future if his head is in the game. Sounds like a slightly slower, lankier version of Randy Moss. If he can gain 10-15 pounds, he could be something of a #2 WR. I wish him luck!

Steelers sign former Jaguars defensive lineman Tyson Alualu, per @JFowlerESPN. Former top-10 pick gets two-year deal with contender.

I had Alualu as great option for us at DT, behind Big Paul and and Tony McDaniel. Good signing there by the Stealers*, and one less solid FA DT option for us.

Best I can understand about it Tim is I used the phrase phone booth, which M13’s “boy” Lance Zerlien uses, so I’m copying him. You know phrases that describe a OL, like anchor, or foot work, or punch, etc. They have trademarks I guess didn’t know about. I guess now every time I use a football phrase I need to put “Lance Zerlien TM” after it so I’m giving the proper credit for my opinion, despite the hours of video study I’ve done to have those opinions
