2017 NFL Draft – Linebackers

The past few weeks, we’ve looked at the O-line and DE’s, 2 definite areas of need. This week, it’s time to focus on the front 7 playmakers, the LB’s. We’ve had some good ones in the past, but it feels like it’s been a while since we had either a dominant MLB knocking the snot out of everyone, or a guy who just seems to be everywhere making big plays, INT’s sacks, tackles for loss etc. It’s high time to find one, so let’s look at those linebackers!

Reuben Foster LB 6’0” 229 Alabama

ReubenFoster_ut_sm

While it would be ideal for Foster to slide all the way to the #22 pick, it’s just not very likely. Foster could well be a top 10 pick, except for one mistake when he blew up at the medical exams at the Hospital during the NFL combine, which is most likely not going to impact his status that much. Who knows, maybe like Wyo says, we want the guy, we go ahead and get the guy and trade up to do so.

Foster is a star in the making, and the last 2 years at Alabama, he showed us what he can do. His Senior year was his best, 115 tackles, (60 solo), 13 TFL’s, 5 sacks, and 2 passes defensed. On a talented defense, Foster still stood out. He can play any of the three 4-3 LB spots, and he would be an instant upgrade wherever he plays. Although Foster didn’t participate at the combine or his pro day, his speed and athleticism are well known. When he lost 20 lbs in his Senior year, it was like he took the piano off his back. True leader who loves to lay the lumber. NFL.com has Foster as the top rated LB at 6.4
****************************************************
Haason Reddick LB 6’1” 237 Temple

Haason+Reddick+East+Carolina+v+Temple+uxhBWoe3_Yol

Reddick is a little bit more complicated. He was mostly used a DE at Temple, and he truly excelled at rushing the passer. In the NFL though, he will either project as a 4-3 OLB, or 3-4 OLB, and possibly even an inside LB in a 3-4. Reddick has the athleticism to play any of those spots, a very explosive athlete with 4.52 speed, a 36.5” vertical, and the power too with 24 reps. Always tough to project how successful he will be changing positions, I’m not worried in the least. I’d take this “Temple Tough” athlete at #22 in a heartbeat! Reddick was a very disruptive DE, in his Senior year, Reddick totaled 65 tackles (43 solo), 22.5 TFL’s (Not a misprint), 9.5 sacks, 1 INT, 1 FR, and 3 FF’s. Playmaker!!! Just a note, When I listen to this kid talk, I hear an intelligent kid who is very grounded. When I hear the experts talk about him, they think he’s going to be a very good NFL LB, no matter where he plays.
****************************************************

Zach Cunningham LB 6’3” 234 Vanderbilt

zach-cunningham-c61115fa14365aa3

Cunningham is a tall lean athlete coming out after his Junior year. Cunningham started both his Sophomore and Junior years, and finished his Senior year with a bang. Zach totaled 125 tackles (71 solo), 16.5 TFL’s, 3 passes defensed, 4 FR’s and 2 FF’s. That’s some serious production. Somewhat hard to judge, because he was everywhere making plays, or trying to on an underwhelming defense where he was the best. Still young, but 15 reps is not good enough, he needs some serious weight training, although he does have long arms (34 3’8”) What you’re getting is a young player that needs to be molded and strengthened, and could become a great NFL LB. Another intriguing possibility for the Dolphins at #22. NFL.com has Cunningham rated at 5.94
****************************************************

Jarrad Davis LB 6’1” 238 Florida

cdmgzp2ixce6nnhpeljl

Davis did not perform at the NFL combine due to injury, but was able to do drills at the Florida Pro Day, and boy did he show up healthy! Davis ran a 4.56 40, 129” broad jump, and a really impressive 38.5” vertical, also putting up 23 reps in the BP. Davis was a 4 YR player starting both his Junior and Senior years, but his Senior season was cut short due to ankle injuries. Davis in his last full season (Junior) finished with 94 tackles (50 solo), 11 TFL’s, 3.5 sacks, 1 INT, 4 passes defensed, and 1 FF. Davis is known a solid, wrap up tackler. Can probably play any of the 4-3 LB spots, but I can see him in the middle. I dig this quote -“He’s good. I don’t care about some of those holes you are talking about. Kill him so maybe somebody will listen to you and he can fall to us. We’ll take him.” — AFC executive. (Chris Grier?) NFL.com has Davis rated at 5.98
****************************************************

Tyus Bowser LB 6’3” 247 Houston

usa_today_8827056.0

Big, explosive LB. 4 year starter at Houston at both DE and LB. He missed 6 games due to fight with his teammate, had his orbital bone (eye socket) broken. Bowser finished his Senior year with 47 tackles (27 solo), 12 TFL’s, 8.5 sacks, 4 passes defensed and 1 FF. Another DE/LB tweener, may see his best upside as a LB, and that could be in a 3-4, or 4-3. The Dolphins have met with Bowser, so you can’t rule him out. Bowser ran a 4.65 40, 37.5” vertical, 127 “ broad jump and 6.75 cone. Big guy can move, and as a pass rusher, has an impressive Cam Wake like dip around the edge. Could be a dual threat player, a LB who can also move to DE to rush the passer. NFL.com has Bowser rated at 5.86
****************************************************

T.J. Watt LB 6’4” 252 Wisconsin

Akron v Wisconsin

What’s in a name? Well, Watt is third Watt brother to enter into the NFL, following brothers J.J. (DE Texans) and Derek (FB Chargers). Is T.J. Watt that good, or is it the bloodlines that elevate Watt? You decide.

Watt is coming out as a Junior, and started all 14 games for Wisconsin. He finished his Junior year with 63 tackles (38 solo), 15.5 TFL’s, 11.5 sacks, 1 INT (for a TD), 4 passes defensed, 2FF’s and 1 FR. The guy certainly was productive, but again, where does he fit? Watt ran 4.69 40, 21 reps, 37” vertical, 128” broad jump, and a nice 6.79 cone. No question, he’s athletic and can move. My guess is he’s best off as a 3-4 OLB, or a 4-3 DE, but we’ll see. NFL.com has Watt rated at 5.88
****************************************************

Alex Anzalone LB 6’3” 241 Florida

1483601325719

Big, athletic LB, who unfortunately can’t stay on the field. No career threatening injuries, just twice an injury to his shoulder, and once a broken arm, but in 4 years, Anzalone never finished a full season. His Senior season, Anzalone played 8 games and finished with 53 tackles (22 solo) 4 TFL’s, 3 sacks, 2 passes defensed, and 1 FR. Hard to really judge production when there is so much missing. Anzalone ran a 4.63 40, a nice 6.88 cone, a 4.25 20 YD shuttle and an impressive 11.71 60 YD shuttle, which all shows he has great burst and excellent change of direction skills. Because of his injury history, Anzalone will probably be agonizing until he’s finally called, maybe as late as day 3. Definitely potential, but can he realize it? NFL.com has Anzalone rated at 5.8
****************************************************

Tim Williams LB 6’3” 244 Alabama

usa-today-8909245.0

Yep, another DE/LB tweener. Williams played all 4 years at Alabama, starting every game his Senior season. Another productive player, Williams finished with 31 tackles (22 solo), 16 TFL’s, 9 sacks, 2 passes defensed, 2 FF’s and 1 FR. Williams spends a fair amount of time in opponents backfield. Williams ran a 4.68 40, did not do the BP, and was otherwise unexceptional athletically at the combine. Another difficult projection as either a 3-4 OLB, 4-3 DE, or 4-3 SAM. My guess is his pass rushing skills will have him at 3-4 OLB or 4-3 DE, but we’ll have to wait and see. NFL.com has Williams rated 6.0
****************************************************

Raekwon McMillan LB 6’2” 240 Ohio State

xtrosu14ksu_KWR_15.JPG

McMillan will be coming out after his Junior year at Ohio St. McMillan was a 3 year starter at O.S., and finished his Senior year with 102 tackles (49 solo), 7 TFL’s, 2 sacks, 5 passes defensed, and 2 FF’s. Durable player who plays every game. Ran a 4.61 40, put up 23 reps, but was otherwise average at the combine. Pretty good instincts and decent coverage ability, just a little less athletic than some of the other prospects. NFL.com has McMillan rated at 5.55
****************************************************

Anthony Walker Jr. LB 6’1” 238 Northwestern

anthony-walker

Walker will also be coming to the NFL after completing his Junior season. a 3 YR starter at LB, Walker finished his Junior season with 105 tackles (62 solo), 10 TFL’s, 2 sacks, 1 INT, 5 passes defensed, 2 FR’s and a whopping 4 FF’s. True MLB prospect, great teammate, and leader at Northwestern. Instinctive player who gets the job done. Walker ran a 4.65 40, put up 23 reps, and was basically average in every other drill. I really like this guy in the mid to later rounds, he’s a good football player. NFL.com has Walker rated at 5.53
****************************************************

Duke Riley LB 6’0” 232 LSU

30340947443_cc54375688_c

4 YR player at LSU, Riley started 12 games as a Senior and totaled 93 tackles (40 solo), 9 TFL’s, 1.5 sacks, 1 INT, and 1 FR. A little undersized, but a good athlete. Ran a 4.58 40, good 6.89 cone, and a quick 4.21 20 YD shuttle, along with 18 reps in the BP. His size will likely push him down on a lot of draft boards, but someone will be getting a good football player in the mid to later rounds. NFL.com has Riley rated at 5.5
****************************************************

There are so many prospects, and so little time. I’m sure there will be a few I left out, such as Lou’s guy Ryan Anderson, and if you’re wondering, Peppers will be grouped with the safeties, which will be coming either next week, or the following week, I haven’t made up my mind on the order as of yet.  I may do CB’s first.

GO DOLPHINS!

Nice article Mike! Many interesting prospects on that list. We probably won’t end up with any of them😂

  4. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

OK, Who’s your favorite LB that you think we realistically have a shot at, what RD do we take him in, and do we have to trade up to do it? I eagerly await your answers.

  5. dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

I’d say the most likely guys on your list:

If a trade down occurs: Bowser, McMillan, or Watt late 1/early 2

2nd round w/o trade McMillan or Riley

    3rd Walker or Anzalone

Later rounds Lee or Brown….Possibly Josh Carraway as a convert

  6. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Patriots had Damien Williams in for a visit

F’n Patriots better keep their grimy hands off our boy!

    • Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

Patriots already have a crowded RB group… But if you can add a guy and take away from a division rival it serves a greater purpose. gonna keep an eye on this story.

  7. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    D-Bolt

You think Riley goes 2nd RD? Wow, I was thinking more likely 4th or later, and the same for Anzalone. Not that I know, that was just my guess.

    • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

I think based on his own success this year following the same path as Jones…yes. He has nice ability. I’m not 100% positive exactly what position Miami is targeting at LB which makes it a little more difficult to pinpoint. Are they looking for a SOLB to kick to MLB in the future…is Kiko the MLB and they’re looking for an elite WOLB?

      • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

I think Miami is entering the draft Honestly not defining who is playing what LB position which will make every player a viable option for them at LB & they’ll decide positions post draft.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I agree that they will be taking the best LB, and not worrying about which of the 3 spots they best fill. As Tim has said, they’re all interchangeable anyway, and I think Kiko would be better on the outside, and Timmons is only here for this year and possibly next, so we can move guys around as the situation changes

    • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

In regards to Anzalone he’ll most likely be a comp 3 or early 4th pick in my opinion. He has the injury history, but it’s also why he’s available in those rounds. If he didn’t have the injury history you’re talking about a solid 2nd rounder.

Just saw a mock on NFLDraftscout that has us taking LB Tyus Bowser at #22 and DE Jordan Willis at #54. That would really give the defense some pop.

  11. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

Obviously if available, Foster is a no brainer. But we were a little too good last year to qualify to be in the running for him. If we were the proverbial “one player away” we might trade up… but I don’t see this FO giving up the picks it would take to get him.

  12. BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

Nice job mike. I think cunningham or davis could fall to us. I would be fine with either pick

  13. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

Just looking at the pics, Cunningham’s arms don’t look like the other LBers in this group. Even looking at other pics… then I had an eerie thought: wasn’t Dion Jordan kind of like this before the roids and muscle gain after being drafted?

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Not the same type, I think Cunningham has his head on straight. He does, however, need to get stronger.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

He has the same physique as Jordan
      Lanky

But if you draft Cunnigham he is a LB through and through
As opposed to Jordan who is DE

Cunningham is very good in coverage
      And has great instincts
If we drafted him he would probably start at OLB out of the gate

More importantly – Jordans problems were not his physique
Jordan was a classic fuck up
If we started Jordan at DE for 5 years I don’t think we would view him so negatively

But Jordan and as suspended for a good portion of his career with us

  14. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Rhino

I hope you change back to a Dolphins avi by draft time. This is unacceptable! lol

Ah, I see you’ve found my latest “man crush” in Blair Brown, Dbolt! I’m taking him in the 3rd Round… he’s a VERY hot commodity right now with his arrow shooting sky high. Timmons is a mere stop-gap for a player like Blair.

Blair Brown seems to have much in common with a certain #54 who used to play for us… SEEK AND DESTROY.

Blair Brown’s body and metrics compare very favorably to… Mychal Kendricks (imagine that, Prof Lou?!!). Both are 5’11”, 239, and have incredible VJs (38″ for Blair, 39 1/2″ for Mychal).

Mychal is faster on the track (4.44 vs Blair’s 4.65), but Blair seems to have better processing/recognition speed.

Check this out… Blair (again, 5’11”, 239) has a 38″ VJ (<– Pro Day) and 10'3" BJ. That's EXACTLY the same VJ and BJ numbers as one Luke Kuechly (but 6'3", 242).

I'm NOT saying that Blair Brown is the next Kuechly, but there's a WHOLE LOT to like about Blair. I'm still trying to get ahold of his TAPE (not just highlights)… but based on his highlights alone — coupled with his metrics — this kid is VERY GOOD.

Blair Brown is on the cusp of reaching "man crush" status for me… if only I can find his tape (NOT highlights).

yeah – it makes sense to try to get into the 4th or move up in the 3rd IMO

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Because of that original-round tender, the Dolphins — who have nearly $21 million in cap space heading into the draft later this month — would have five days to match any offer New England, or another team, makes to Williams. But if Miami opts to not match, the Dolphins won’t receive a draft pick as compensation, because Williams wasn’t drafted coming out of Oklahoma.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Yep – That’s what I was saying. We can match, but those Patriots can make things difficult, as they once did with Welker.

  32. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Steve

I don’t understand, it clearly says because Williams was undrafted, Miami would not receive draft pick compensation.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Cause they signed him to an original round selected tender and he was an UDFA. They have the right to match whatever the Pats offer though.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

The team that has the rights to ANY RFA has the right to match any offer, but my point was, if he leaves, even if he plays every game, we’ll get no compensatory pick for him because he was undrafted.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

I think we are all agreeing without knowing it….latest being me 🙂

One thing I don’t if is if an RFA that goes to another team counts in the secret comp math equation come the next draft, but then don’t think we will be seeing many comp picks next year cause we signed our own back and brought in some others like TImmons.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

You are correct Mike, no compensation.

I believe, if he was drafted he would’ve signed a 4 year contract and been an UFA after his contract expired. Since we tendered him to an original round offer, the lowest, we wouldn’t get any compensation. The welker tender was different, because we gave him a 2nd round tender, so if we didn’t match we’d get a 2nd. The cheats gave us an additional 7th, so they wouldn’t have to pay him $35M, instead they gave him $17M.

The point in signing him to an original round tender was to have the right to match and also, if no team signed him we’d then have him at a lower contract. I don’t know what happens when the player doesn’t sign the tender, as Damien hasn’t signed it.

  33. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Stanger

I’m not actually explaining it right. Never mind compensatory picks. The whole idea behind the RFA tender is the value of the tender you put on the player. They could have put a 1st RD tender on Williams if they wanted to, but his salary would have to be commensurate with that tender. They chose to do the original round tender, which in the case of an UDFA, is the lowest tender they could have given him, therefore, if NE signs him, we get no draft pick. If we put a 1st RD tender, and NE signed him, we would get their 1st RD pick. That’s the story. 🙂

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

I’m right with you on that….all hinges on original round being no round. Can’t blame them for not putting a first or 2nd on Williams though.

    • I don’t know why Beasley’s got his nose stuck so far up Fahey’s ass. Fahey is the #1 self-proclaimed football expert on Twitter. He wouldn’t know a pre-snap read from a Dunkin Donut but he’s written an e-book about it.

      • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I love this article and Fahey’s excellent analysis because they verify what i see and what Gase sees which is that Tannehill is one of the best QBs in football but he has been stuck in a terribly coached team with serious OL issues and WRs with iffy hands.

        Tannehill rocks.

      • Well, of course anyone who likes Tannehill is going to agree with what Fahey says but Fahey’s nothing more than a Twitter GM wannabe.

    • Fahey was one of the guys who gave Tannehill credit for making the td throw to Williams in the San Diego game, saying he recognized the coverage and that’s why he went to him when Gase said in his presser following the game they were looking for the opportunity to use Williams that way in a game and the opportunity finally presented itself and that’s why they called the play at that point in the game.

      • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I know. Wasn’t that an awesome play by Tannehill? I loved that one and the game winner to Parker slicing out of the side of the end zone was beautiful also.

Which came after TWO long drives Tannehill engineered to come from behind late.

      • Tannehill had nothing to do with calling the play or recognizing the play to Williams. It was Gase who saw the opportunity.

Fahey is Twitter’s #1 douchebag “expert”.

It’s a consumers choice to buy it….No different than someone buying the SS to read Omar’s nonsense.

    • I’ve gone down that road with him plenty until one day he finally blocked me just because he couldn’t take the criticism. I wasn’t being an ass to him, just pointing out the flaws in what he was posting on Twitter but he didn’t like being called out so I got blocked.

He was the one who said that Tannehill was only responsible for 4 of his 12 int’s in ’15 because the other 8 were on the wr’s, te’s and rb’s. I’m not saying this to bash Tannehill but it’s also like saying Tannehill isn’t responsible for all his td’s because the wr’s, te’s and rb’s caught them and scored the td’s.

Anyway, he’s been coming off with some pretty far-fetched stuff for awhile. Like I said above, Gase said in his presser after the San Diego game they were wanting to use Williams split out on a LB if the opportunity presented itself and they finally got to use him that way vs SD and that’s why they called the play. Fahey puts the play on Twitter saying RT recognized the matchup when he saw it and that’s why he threw it to him.

Again, not bashing RT, just stating some things that Fahey has said that are off the wall.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Well we drafted Doughty last year and added Fales just recently. There is only so much time coaches can spend with developmental QBs and only so many reps they can get while trying to get ready for the season. If Doughty doesn’t show enough progress this year then next year I can see us drafting another for sure. I believe Fales is just an extra camp arm and to push Doughty.

We must get an LB in the first 2 rounds, unless someone falls to us we can’t refuse, but in regular situations… I’d be ok with McDowell in the first, if we can get someone like Cunningham in the 2nd, but I really want Reddick now as my 1st bar none. His TFL and playmaking ability…

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I’d be VERY happy with either of Takk or Reddick in the 1st.

IF we were to draft Takk, I wonder if we’d play him at DE or LB, being he can do both very well. I’d say LB, unless we double-down and draft a Blair Brown in the 3rd or 4th (<– trade up or down).

In short, if we draft 2 LBs (Takk and someone else), I could see Takk becoming a DE for us. If not, Takk is going to be a KILLER LB for us, IMO.

  66. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

My biggest nightmare on Draft day would be both Takk and Reddick being off the board when we’re up… and it’s a real possibility. I really hope that’s not the case.

Don’t set yourself up for disappointment. There are a lot of prospects that will be there for us and our FO’s targets may be very different than what everyone here is talking about. Not everyone can go before #22 but every year we fans think nobody will fall to us whether it’s #12, #14 or #22 of whatever. LOL

There will be other positions that will be drafted before we pick that we’re not likely to target and we already know there are a good 10 prospects we have no shot at so before you know it there will still be plenty on the board when we’re up. 🙂

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

How many excuses will there be with T.J. that he didn’t play the first 8 and never got into the groove, etc etc. I’m not betting on anyone we currently have on the roster except Reshad Jones at safety

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

But that (for me) would require trading away a future Draft pick from the ’18 cabinet (likely a 1st)… I’m not trading away any of this year’s picks (already down a natty 3rd and 4th after last year) to move back up into the 1st Round.

HIGH risk/HIGH reward kind of move… to lose a 1st Rounder in ’18 to do this.

  80. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I really don’t think we have many needs. What we want to do is upgrade some areas but every team is looking to upgrade positions. I don’t see any critical voids as if we can’t line up and play.

To me more youth and depth on the DL, at LB and G are the most glaring areas we could use upgrades at. CB is always a highly valued position and adding a young buck makes sense too. But we could go play right now and still be very competitive. If Allen and McDonald don’t really pan out for the future we can always address safety next year. We’ve got Jones locked up likely for the rest of his career. You can only play so many safeties at a time.

Injuries can throw a monkey wrench into the equation at any time at any position, and that goes for every team. But you can’t build a team worrying about that. There is a numbers game and only so many can make the 53.

  81. drg's avatar drg says:

I don’t think we are a one year fix away on defense. I’m hoping we take BPA with an emphasis on the defensive side of the ball. That, and we maximize our draft pick value. No stupid trades giving away future assets please. No trade ups.

  82. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I think sometimes when we get into the offseason we fans are always looking for maximum talent as depth and it’s not realistic. You need good STs players and not all players are good at it. It is the 3rd phase of the game that is often ignored by fans and the media but not by teams. Only 46 dress for the game. Look at it that way and then look at the numbers game.

LOL, I pay attention to stuff like this when looking at a roster. These were some of the breakdowns we used last year. For instance we activated all 9 of our DL a few times last year. So when thinking draft, think about a numbers game too. Not meaning BPA early on, that’s a different beast. But overall depth. You can only go to the game with so much and who is effective on STs is a big part of the 46.

Tim is smart on these matters. Props, Brother.

It doesnt interest me, except when a guy i want to be activated isn’t. Too many variables to worry about what guys are active for any given game.

Thanks M13, Steve isn’t interested. LOL

You would think it would be an incentive to lose weight, but…i love those old ladies that you see at a hotel, that do their exercising in the pool, as if it were their regular routine at home. This MRS Puff lookin lady at work just got off the elevator, take the FN stairs there’s 2 floors. And they wonder why they

  92. You don’t draft for special teams. You have to find special teams players among those on your roster. When you’re picking guys either in the draft, after the draft as udfa’s or bringing on free agents to fill your roster you’re looking for guys who can do what you need them to do as part of the offense or defense and then you’re looking to find your special teams guys from among that group.

You may sign a guy who’s a free agent, like Paysinger, who’s been good on special teams but you’re not drafting for it.

Have you been talking to Wanny again😉 what would cause you to write this post?

Didn’t say draft for STs, but most players not starting will never be active unless they play STs. That’s just the way it is. For Instance, Drake, Williams, Grant, Gray, a couple WR, some OL, half the DL, LB and DB rotation will as well. It’s still 11 on 11 and there are multiple STs units. Somebody has to do it, Lou.

  93. Kenny Stills led the Phins w/9 td’s in ’16. Ajayi had 8. Do you know who was 3rd? Damien Williams with 6.

Gotta love that 17 year old kid’s eye witness report lol.
“There were so many manatees around her, I think I counted at least 10 of them. They were all fighting against each other to get on her back and hump her, it was like a big manatee gangbang.”
