Do you smell that?

Pig Face

Do you smell that?

It wasn’t me….

It’s the draft…it’s right around the corner you know

Ah….take a big inhale in and take it in!

What will the Dolphins do?

Will they answer my squeals and draft linebacker!

Or do they stay up front but draft a pass rusher?

They might not even do that

They might draft a defensive back…

Or maybe even

they put building the defense on the back burner

and draft offense!

We only have to wait a few more days

Can you smell it?

Miami Dolphins: Florida LB Jarrad Davis (Round 1, pick 22); Utah S Marcus Williams (Round 2, pick 54)

Analysis: You hear great things about Davis’ leadership off the field, which is important for that inside linebacker spot. … Williams is smart, tough and instinctive. He’s very competitive.

I think the pickings are rather slim on the OL Old Dolfan

But I’m sort of expecting an OL in the first 3 rounds like you said

We might go defensive heavy though
Not sure what the philosophy of this draft is
    But if we went 1 – 2 – 3 defense
I think we might really be a much better defense in ’17

    We will know soon

I dont see us like the Falcons, they are designed way more pro style and we are still more WCO, we are just a more balanced WCO, or at least were last year due to a need to rely more on the run. They use a true alpha receiver and try to set him up and if they double him they look to their other guys. Scary part for them is thy are still a solid WR 2 from having a perfect group so once they get a guy who can really draw someone off of Jones, its going to be hella hard to stop them. They also are more straight power blocking run formations, we do more zone blocking for our running game.

Still it really doesnt matter, we are a pretty solid team talent wise, we do need to add depth so we maintain continuity when a player goes down, and Tanny can work with the offense designed as it is. I think a lot of his issues is that, unlike a Ryan, he doesnt have the confidence that he needs to let it rip. Maybe he gets it, maybe he’s too damaged from the Philbin years where his confidence obviously got shaken up some, we will see. I do think though for the offense we run, he’s capable of helping us to success same as Ryan does, even though i dont think he is as complete a QB as Ryan was, even comparing them to each other at the same stage of their careers.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I wasn’t saying the same offense. It was more about the weapons we have could lead to us scoring a lot of points. We may also become the type of offense that controls the TOP and squeezes the life out of opponents.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I always did. You didn’t see that in the playoff game when they beat Seattle R. Wilson’s rookie season? Down a couple of points with about 27 seconds left and kicked an FG for win.

Charlie at Walter football has us taking:

Charles Harris DE/OLB Missou (he’s a lot like Reddick TBH, time with hand down and standing up, explosive player)

Jalen Tabor CB UF (he has met with us multiple times, so i could see this as a possibility, he’s an agressive CB who is good in run support, playes press-zone, and press-man well)

Justin Evans SS Texas A&M (again has met with us privately, fits what we want from out S,physical player who still has good ballskills, kinda a hybrid type guy akin to Jones)

Deatrich Wise Jr DE (He’s met with us, and he fits the mold of a guy we could stand up at DE and possibly slide inside to DT when we wanted to go max rush)

Isaac Asiata (again, theme here seems to be has met with us previously, but also he’s a pretty fleet footed, nasty demeanor OG who could come in and give us a nice developmental guy)

Travis Rudolph (has me with us previously as well, gritty receiver, good redzone player, reminds me a lot of Landry and Caroo coming out of college)

Jonathan Calvin DE/OLB (again, we met with him privately as well, can play both positions, most think he develops into a real strong OLB, though he played last year was at DE)

  14. D's avatar D says:

Tim, Steve is kinda right and so are you. Ryan would be given a disservice as being called a gunslinger because he makes WAY better decisions than most do, he just has confidence in all of his throws. Thier offense however does have more deep passing routes, partially because he has the weapons for it, but also because its kinda more playing to Ryan’s style and skills. Tanny’s skill set is different, we play to his skillset, its same deal but we really arent comparable to them, and Tanny isnt comparable to Ryan. We could have similar levels of success but i think it takes better next man up so we can absorb injuries better, and we also need Tanny to get his confidence, it got beat up a good bit with Philbin, and i think he is getting some of it back, but even just the short time Moore was in there, you could see the confidence level difference between those two, much less a guy like Ryan.

He looked more confidant toward the end of the year yes, but he doesnt have the confidence of other QB’s and it shows. Dont worry im not attacking him Tim lol. No need to ruffle your mother hen feathers, im just saying he still needs repairing in that area and its 100% true. Moore, even though a good bit less skilled, threw with a lot more confidence in his throws.

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Would you call that “Moore confidence”

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Not ruffled at all. Just don’t see it that way. I expect our entire offense to take another step this year because we have balance that we haven’t had for years. I think the addition of Thomas is going to change the dynamic of it as well.

Just surprised they haven’t meant one of those 3 guys

    • D's avatar D says:

We met with McDowell with a private workout, we just didn’t bring him into the facility. Barnett might be someone they think is outside their range to get but would be a no brainer if he falls. They also might have kept his visit more private, ie requested he not post on twitter his visit with them.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Sometimes teams draft guys they never met with. I believe we did meet with McDowell. I thought I read that.

      • D's avatar D says:

See right above you, i had him listed a couple blogs ago, workout visit means we went to him instead of bringing him to us.

  20. D's avatar D says:

Tim i think he has the offense built to be a quick scoring offense, but one that maintains TOP as their primary strategy. The WCO with Tempo is ofr playing from behind so he kinda of runs a two style system. Tanny plays best with a lead however, again this is where the confidence thing comes in. Once he learns to let it rip, i would expect to see us go tempo and get some quick scores then fall back to the balance run oriented game. We didnt have the chance to do that last year and part of it just came down to we needed to take the pressure of Tanny.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I’m looking forward to seeing it. 🙂

    • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

A lot of it came down to WRs not running the correct routes & just not having a fully healthy OL to run the tempo stuff consistently. Also think having a really young team overall slowed that down also. Like Christiansen said to the media last year about the tempo…something to the effect of “we are in year 1 of the install. It’s not like having Payton Manning in year 15 of the offense.” Something like that.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Yeah building on what they started last year with the core guys and depth knowing the offense going into year 2 should help them progress. Also the addition of Thomas already knowing the offense is a bonus.

      • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

No doubt about it Tim. Health on the OL will be paramount.

  21. D's avatar D says:

There is a trade rumor floating around that the Browns and Jets might trade, Browns potentially giving up 12 and 33 to move up to 6 with the Jets to get Trubisky.

  22. BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

I just hope we don’t trade away picks this year to move up a few spots like we did last year to get Howard and Carroo. Howard would have been there but we traded our 4th to get him a few spots earlier. Dumb move IMO.

    • D's avatar D says:

I still don’t think the Howard trade up was necessary but again, i don’t see everything they do, so i just assume they had their reasons. I do know however, they had a CB targeted in the first, so the Tunsil drop kinda messed with their original plan, but in a good way. Because of that, they needed to be agressive getting their fallback CB, Howard, as the drop off became big after that and not getting him meant not getting a guy who possibly could play this year. They must have felt another team was equally as pressed for getting him so they traded up to get him.

I know we tried trading up with Baltimore for Myles Jack, but Jacksonville must have offered up more, so we had already been working with Blat on a trade so even after they fell back we had a good idea that they would be in play as a trading partner. Tampa had already take a CB in the first, (likely the one we had target, but it could have also been Apple), so they were not a threat to take a CB. Giant also had just taken a CB and they had gone big in FA to get CB’s so they werent likely in play. So that left the Bills as the team i guess they were nervous about taking one in front of us, or they thought another team was pitching to move up with Baltimore for him. Thats about as close to figuring that one out as i have ever come lol, but the Caroo trade kinda threw me a bit more than Howard did anyways.

I also know that their second round target was Derrick Henry, but again, the Tunsil thing shifted that kind of stuff around, so instead of R1 CB, R2 RB as being their primary targets for those rounds, they shifted those down a round, the trade up to get Howard cost us the 4th, which probably would have kept us from having to pony up so much to move up for Caroo, so it all kinda cascades off the Tunsil selection in the first.

IMO i think this would have been our draft had Tunsil not have happened.
      1) Hargreaves/Apple
      2) Derrick Henry
      3) Caroo or possibly Braxton Miller(without having to trade, and possibly we would have traded back)
      4) Miles Killebrew

Again, one of the hardest training points of their careers, a time when lots of hydration is needed, and the day before they have to be at peak performance, ie well hydrated, they test urine and expect it not to be dilute? I mean wtf, snip a little hair and be done with it.

Guys, there is no center prospect in this draft as good as Pouncey. We also have 4 other guys on our roster who can play center so it’s not like we haven’t addressed it just in case. So drafting one early could be the definition of reaching and not really getting good value. Maybe Larsen was the the contingency plan and Steen and Urbik will compete at guard and we look to draft a guard to compete with them.

“Adam Gase explained why at the owner’s meetings several weeks ago:

“I’m not going to turn my back on who I think is the best center in football. I’ll roll the dice with him for as long as I can because that’s how good he is. That’s how much he means to our organization. We’re always going to have good contingency plans if something happens. No one is ever going to be as good as him. It’s just a fact. He’s that good.”

Gase added: “I’m going to do everything I can to make sure Mike’s out there for his – I always tell him 16-plus games. That’s the goal from here on out. That’s the only thing I’m going to talk to him about. I’m not going to talk to him about not missing games. It’s not going to come from a negative light for me. I’m going to talk about playing 16-plus games next year.”

The Dolphins planned to take it easy on Pouncey during spring workouts and practice; “you’ll see him out there in bubble wrap,” Gase said then.

    • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

We have 4 other guys who can do that right now. Just saying draft a center doesn’t mean they will be the answer. There are no blue chip centers in this draft. Just solid prospects in Elflein and Pocic. Do we know they will be any good?

Gase already explained how they’re going to treat this. Maybe we do draft one as well on top of that, I don’t know. We did make the playoffs with Pouncey only playing in 5 games last year.

I like (((Barnett))) & Davis, Lamp being my third favorite is a legit consideration, esp with o18 potentialities!! Even if the button doesn’t get pushed and there is ano18 FA/Draft..

Starting OL play practically every O-snap, third LB played 25% of D plays, but I’d be stoked with J Davis or Haason DogDart

It’s not about whether the C we draft is as good or better than Pouncey, it’s about whether they’re better what we currently have as depth behind him. I don’t think that’s something that should just be pushed aside, because it’s pretty likely that Pouncey won’t play the whole season, or possibly any

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Mike, I said I’m concerned about his longevity too. I’m just not concerned that’s he on crutches as a part of his rehab in April. Football players coming off of injuries often take precautions because it’s their profession. Again, we know he missed 11 games last year for a reason. The season doesn’t start for another 4+ months.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I get it Tim. Walking on crutches isn’t precautionary, it’s a necessity. You don’t walk on crutches if you don’t have to. Hard to imagine he’s going to be in football shape with enough strength in his legs in just a few months. Just how I feel, I could be wrong, but I think it’s something to be concerned about.

  45. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Mike, if you’re coming off of a knee or ankle or shoulder injury you might be wearing a supportive device in the offseason so not to tweak anything. If Pouncey was on crutches in late July I’d be really concerned.

Let’s say he’s off the crutches in 2-3 weeks and then starts strength conditioning in late May, there’s still plenty of time to get ready for the season. My biggest concern is that his hip issues never go away even after all of this and that might be the case. But right now it’s part of his rehab.

    Reply
    ———————————
Could be neither were covering up anything. If the NFL did a better job investigating, or made them piss again a little while later they could have gotten a non-dilute sample. They had re-evals and they could have tested the again then.

It could have been any number of reasons they had a dilute sample, and some are legit. They also pound down water to get their weight numbers up some for weight in and then by time they are doing their workouts they have purged it down so they look big but still perform small. They have lots of tricks like that that can cause the dilute sample. There is also the sheer magnitude of all the workouts and not being hydrated properly before the biggest event of your life might mean you perform poorly so they may have just been trying to make sure they were at their best.

Thats my biggest thing is there are legit reasons you could have a dilute sample, and instead of making these guys look guilty of something and put them in the watch program, the NFL owes them to go the extra mile before laying that label down on them. Thats a really big fucking deal to do to a player less than a week before it may or may not cost them millions.

Seattle needs OTs in the worst way. If there’s somebody still there @ R1P22 (say a Cam Robinson), they just might move MOUNTAINS to move up to get him.

  64. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

The situation would have to be just right for Seattle to move up, but I’d think we’d get no less than a 3rd Rounder as compensation. A 2nd Rounder might be a stretch, but it would all be contingent on how badly they want a guy where we select @ R1P22.

My best guess? Cam Robinson lasting to R1P22 is the KEY.

    • D's avatar D says:

I dont see it. R1P22 doesnt have that kind of value, even trading out to the early second would likely only net us a late 3rd in compensation.

  65. D's avatar D says:

Manitoba, would you do trade back to 26, and give up our 3rd for Sherman?

    • manitobafinfan's avatar manitobafinfan says:

That’s tough, maybe we if they could parley their 5ths or 7ths to get back into 3rd or 4th.

    • D's avatar D says:

If i were offering Seattle for Sherman, id be pitching our 22 and Maxwell for 26 and Sherman and maybe throw in a 5th. They get a slightly cheaper CB, who is pretty solid, but also is cheap to get out of the contract, we get a great CB who is a little more expensive, and a little less flexible contract wise, so i boils down to a little bit better position in the draft and cap savings and doesn’t cost us a lot as far as picks and we should be able to eat the cost of adding Sherman.

Thats essentially the same as them getting a player like Maxwell for equivalent of 4th round selection. They get to pick up a draft pick in a spot that still has good players and they lighten their cap load and get rid of a guy who seems to be getting tired of playing for that team.

After them, Takkarist McKinley is going to get drafted by any of the Cowboys, Packers, Stealers*, or Falcons (IMO).

    • D's avatar D says:

From overthecap, Sherman would leave 4.4mil in dead money with Seattle, Maxwell would leave 0 with us. We would therefore inherit 9.23mil of Sherman’s contract, so next year Sherman would essentially only be 750k more expensive than Maxwell. Seattle would save 9.23 mil, but inherit all 8.5 of Maxwell’s contract meaning they are still ahead by 750k, they would get a move up in the first and a 5th round pick in compensation and again, Maxwell’s contract is easier to get out of if they wind up getting a replacement for him int he draft. Its not to say they dont want more but to me thats a pretty solid trade offer.

But if Pouncey misses significant time this year, the Dolphins’ O-Line, as presently constituted, is NOT GOOD ENOUGH TO GET US TO THE SUPER BOWL!! Having had hip surgery on BOTH of his hips, Pouncey is far from a lock to play 16+ games this season. Even starting 8-9 games MAY prove to be a reach, even though we all wish him the best..

GIVEN Pouncey’s current status, I now believe it is IMPERATIVE that the Dolphins address their O-Line deficiency by drafting the BPA at G or C in the upcoming draft. And the best way to do this is to make their move in round 2, where a few quality O-Line guys should still be available. Taking the BPA at G/C in Day 3 probably WON’T get the job done.

    ———————————————————————-
They never followed it the way you guys are talking about, it was just used as a starting point, then the team that had more urgency to trade paid more. For example when we traded for Dion Jordan the Raiders wanted to move back to get more picks, and since we were their only trade partner they took what we offered.

When team A asks team B to trade, team B uses the chart as a minimum for compensation, then they barter from there.
