State of the Roster

As of today, May 4th, the NFL has completed 2/3 of it’s roster filling , with pre-draft free agency, and the NFL Draft.  The next phase is post-draft free agency.  There are still quite a few players who remain unsigned, and then of course, there will be cuts coming up as well, which will put more players into the free agency pool.

For the most part, the heavy lifting has been done, and any other roster adds most likely will not be major ones.  The Dolphins did a great job in free agency and the draft to ensure they  filled the roster holes that existed.  There still may be some tweaking, but the big moves have been made.

On offense, this is what we’ve done.

QB – Ryan Tannehill, Matt Moore, Brandon Doughty and David Fales

Dolphins signed former Bears QB David Fales in FA

RB – Jay Ajayi, Kenyan Drake, Storm Johnson

At the moment, RB Damien Williams has still not signed his RFA tender of $1.8M.  Williams has no option to play for anyone else but the Dolphins in the NFL, so he either signs his tender, or sits out the year.

WR – Jarvis Landry, Kenny Stills, Devante Parker, Leonte Carroo, Jakeem Grant, Rashawn Scott and Isaiah Ford

The Dolphins re-signed Kenny Stills in FA and drafted Ford in the 7th RD.

TE – Julius Thomas, Anthony Fasano, MarQueis Gray and Thomas Duarte

The Dolphins traded for Julius Thomas with the Jaguars and signed Anthony Fasano in FA.

OL – Laremy Tunsil, Isaac Asiata, Mike Pouncey, Jermon Bushrod, Ja’Wuan James, Terry Poole, Sam Young, Ted Larsen, Anthony Steen and Kraig Urbik

The Dolphins drafted Isaac Asiata, signed Ted Larsen in FA

This is what we’ve done on defense

DE – Cam Wake, Andre Branch, William Hayes, Charles Harris, Terrence Fede, Julius Warmsley, Nicholas Williams and Arthur Miley

Miami drafted Charles Harris, traded for William Hayes with the Rams, and picked up Williams and Miley in FA

DT – Ndamukong Suh, Jordan Phillips, Davon Godcheaux, Vincent Taylor and Lawrence Okoye

Miami drafted both Godcheaux and Taylor, and signed Okoye as a FA

LB – Kiko Alonso, Lawrence Timmons, Koa Misi, Raekwon McMillan, Neville Hewitt, Mike Hull, Deon Lacey and Lamin Barrow

Miami drafted Raekwon McMillan, signed Lacey and Barrow as FA’s.  They call him Lamin Barrow, quite right!

CB – Byron Maxwell, Xavien Howard, Tony Lippett, Bobby McCain, Cordrea Tankersley, Lafayette Pitts and Jordan Lucas

Miami drafted Cordrea Tankersley

S – Reshad Jones, Nate Allen, Walt Aikens, Michael Thomas, A.J. Hendy

ST – K Andrew Franks, P Matt Darr

KR/PR Jarvis Landry, Jakeem Grant and Kenyan Drake

The Dolphins signed the following Undrafted Free Agents:

  • Cameron Malveaux, DE, Houston
  • Drew Morgan, WR, Arkansas
  • Malcom Lewis, WR, Miami
  • De’Veon Smith, RB, Michigan
  • Torry McTyer, DB, UNLV
  • Praise Martin-Oguike, DE, Temple
  • Larry Hope, CB, Akron
  • Eric Smith, OL, Virginia
  • Damore’ea Stringfellow, WR, Mississippi
  • Maurice Smith, DB, Georgia
  • Chase Allen, LB, Souther Illinois
  • Joby Saint Fleur, DE, Oklahoma State
  • Francis Owusu, WR, Stanford
  • Matt Haack, P, Arizona State

I would have to say the Dolphins exceeded my expectations so far.  To me, the biggest questions are on the O-line.  Obviously the biggest question is to whether C Mike Pouncey will be healthy enough to play, to play well, and for how long.  He’s the cog that gets everything rolling.  If he’s healthy, it will be a huge boost for the team.  If not, either Anthony Steen, Kraig Urbik or Ted Larsen will have to step up.  The next question is who starts at LG and RG.  Gase said his preference was Jermon Bushrod at RG, but nothing is in stone yet.  Will it be FA pickup Ted Larsen or newly drafted Isaac Asiata at LG?  Most of us feel Asiata will take it, but you can’t discount experience, so Larsen, Urbik or Steen are still in the running

Getting LB Lawrence Timmons in FA was a huge pickup.  He’s as solid as can be, and he plays every game.  He tackles, and he can still run pretty well at 31.  Drafting Raekwon McMillan was a necessity.  I know Gase likes Misi, and it’s definitely possible that Misi is an opening day starter, but how long can Misi stay healthy?  In his 7 year career, Misi has only once played 16 games.  Contrast that with Timmons, who played 16 games in 9 of his 10 seasons, missing only 2 games in 2009.  McMillan may not start from game 1, but if he plays up to his potential, he’ll be in there at some point.

While Reshad Jones will be back, I’m not thrilled with Nate Allen.  The former 2010 2nd RD pick has languished in OAK for 2 seasons.  Coming off an injury, he wasn’t the same player.  I think the fact we doubled down with T.J. MCDonald was telling.  Even though T.J. won’t be available until week 8, to me, that wasn’t a big vote of confidence for Nate Allen.

At CB, we have pretty solid depth.  For some reason, Maxwell gets little love here due to a slow start, but he’s a solid player.  Howard fought injuries, but he flashed some good and bad, as expected in his rookie season.  I’m excited to see what he can do with a full year of workouts and training camp and pre season.  Lippett also showed lots of promise last year.  Good ole Bobby McCain struggled some, so that could potentially open the door for Tankersley.  Not necessarily a slot CB, he might get a shot there, or maybe Howard or Maxwell would move inside while Tankersley stays outside.

On the D-line, we resigned Andre Branch, and traded for a  run stopping DE in William Hayes.  Drafting Charles Harris who already has a wicked spin move was a great addition and should give our pass rush some sizzle.  We drafted a couple of DT’s, both have potential as rotational guys, but neither of them are anywhere near ready to start. Jordan Phillips hopefully will realize his potential this year, and form and unstoppable duo of DT’s with he and Suh.

The offense was pretty set IMO before the draft, save for the O-line.  This has potential to be a power run offense, but one that could open it up with the passing game with Landry, Stills, Parker and TE Julius Thomas.  Who knows, maybe Carrooooooo even shows up this season.

ST’s should be once again pretty good with pro bowler P Matt Darr returning, and Andrew Franks was OK.  Landry, Drake and Grant give some fireworks to the return game so looking good there.

All in all, we have a lot to be optimistic about, I don’t believe this team has a glaring weakness, perhaps just a soft spot if everything doesn’t come together for the O-line.

GO DOLPHINS, ZERO IN!

Adam Gase is a pretty easy read, unless he really doesnt want to because he shuts it down and maintains the demanor that he always has regardless of if he is dancing around a problem. Still i think his interview says a lot. First, i think he DEFINATELY was pulling for Howard to fall. He seemed to indicate to me that he has a first round target that he wanted to add on offense but that it didnt happen and he felt like we did the right move by going with the guy we felt best with that was there. He also really enforced the “i dont care about the defense” mentality lol. Every question about the way the rookie would or would not be used on defense seemed like he was a tongue slip away from saying “why dont you talk to Burke about that” but he instead did come back to answer with regards to how he feels abotu rookies.

That said i loved the sentiment, that we cant say things about using the rookies until we have seen them, and that we cant say they will or wont play because this is a system where how you play, and how you prepare earns you the spot, its not given to anyone, high draft pick rookie or 10 year vet. I also really liked the part when asked about something stupid, cant remember exactly what it was, but he was like…thats not how we think about things, which to me is exactly why i hate some of the reporters, they are over digging in the trash can for something to talk about, and not getting to the real stuff, because thats not how football people think, its how whiny little pencil nerds that write about football think.

He also mentioned that we lost out on some of the players we liked because teams picked them right before us, and i could easily see Jarrad Davis, and Tabor as being a couple of guys they are talking about there, and considering that we traded up to get Asiata not too long after missing out on those two, i think there had to be something to that. I think he is slightly disappointed too to not have gotten more picks on offense, but not in the way that he feels we went the wrong direction, just that that’s how the board fell, we did the right thing taking whom we did but he would have liked some players to fall to us that didnt. He is always a pretty good interview because he is shapr and direct and very genuine himself, i can see how in sync the FO is with him, they got his kinda people, no matter what side of the ball they were on, they needed to match his standards for football players period.

Its absolutely because of the Pats. As i was saying to Mikey about designing your team to play the Pats, and he was saying you cant do that, i said you have to at least to some extent, because path to the Superbowl goes through them. Any evaluation of us making it to the Superbowl comes down to can they beat the Patriots and most don’t feel we can, hell most dont feel most other teams can either.

TB by comparison is in the AFC south, with a team to me that got weaker this off season in the Panthers, a team thats pretty much rebuilding, and a team that, yes had a almost unstoppable offense in the Falcons, but again who stopped the Falcons….back to the Patriots argument. TB also has a really solid defense and they look to have really added to their offense so they should be a tough out for even the Falcons.

  33. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Tim,
I have always agreed that fans expect too much from young players. We’ve talked about that many times. The issue is that the NFL is getting to be more and more of a younger man’s game. Teams just don’t have the ability to keep lots of their own guys for a long time. If you actually end up with 3 or 4 young guys who become really good, you probably aren’t going to be able to keep them all anyway. I think the average career length is under 3 years now too. Teams almost have to get immediate return out most of their players. They can’t afford to wait 3 years for every guy to contribute. Top draft choice rookies need to get on the field right away. I think it really has changed. What do you think?

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I think more than our top 3 picks will play this year. Starting is overrated. Contribute when called upon. Deepen the team with more talent than you had the previous year.

That’s what I’ve been saying, but Asiata is different, it would be in our best interest, if he started.

I think from this draft we probably have 2 day 1 starters in McMillan and Asiata. I think Harris will be a high snap player who eventually gets into the starting lineup. I also believe both DTs will end up being rotational players. I don’t have a feel for what they’ll do w/ Tank….I’m hoping they at least give him some slot work to see if he can carry coverage across the field. If so he could replace McCain.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

In some ways playing slot is a lot more difficult than playing on the outside. A lot more room to defend, and years ago, the slot used to be teams 3rd best receiver, while today, it might be their best.

      • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

Yep. Like I said, if he can manage that horizontal coverage then he has a chance. He has more speed than McCain to keep up across the field.

By football standards, a 25-year old rookie is older than the norm. You’ll recall that much was made of John Beck (Mormon mission) being roughly the same age when we drafted him a decade ago. You’ll also recall all the talk about Brandon Weeden being “old” for a rookie.

It doesn’t bother me one bit, but it does others. To me, we’re getting a much more mature individual than a wide-eyed kid. To others, we drafted a guy who wasted 3-4 years of his football career. It’s all in the eye of the beholder.

Yes and no on GOT. They stayed almost completely true to the books for the 1st season with very insignificant things being changed. As the show moved on, they took more and more artistic license on which characters to change, or leave out entirely, but on the whole, most of the characters were pretty much as they were in the books, and they did include the greater majority. In a series with a “cast of thousands”, I think they did an excellent job with it.

As for The Dark Tower, they were only about 5 or 6 major characters, and they have chosen to leave out a couple. Hopefully, like you said, it doesn’t hurt the movie, but man, I love Detta, she was mean and badass! Oh, and not racist in the least, Roland is a white dude. I always pictured a Clint Eastwood-ish looking person playing Roland, and it’s not just me, all the artwork from the series shows him white as well. I do like Idris Elba though, and I’m sure he’ll do great.

I’m sifting through some stats and just realized something. In 31 games played (15 starts), Jordan Phillips has only 27 tackles. For reference…

    Jordan Phillips: 31-27 (-4)
    Paul Soliai: 138-158 (+20)
    Dontari Poe: 78-156 (+68)
    Earl Mitchell: 100-128 (+28)
    Tony McDaniel: 141-161 (+20)
    ******
And now, his contemporaries (DTs drafted in the first 2 rounds of the ’15 Draft who play DT in the NFL)…

    Danny Shelton: 32-51 (+19)
    Malcom Brown: 32-55 (+23)
    Mario Edwards: 16-34 (+18)
    Eddie Goldman: 21-28 (+7)

I could break this down by snaps vs tackles, but that may make Phillips look even worse. One tackle per game played isn’t too much to ask, especially for a rookie drafted in the 2nd Round.

I’m not trying to vilify Phillips here, but dammit he’s got to get it together. He can do a backflip at 334 pounds… but he can’t even manage a tackle per game? I’m talking about a guy who has ALL-PRO potential if he applies himself.

And for the record, I DO realize that we’ve all but put Phillips on notice as he enters year 3. Let it be known that we’re not asking him to play NT, where it generally takes 3 to 4 years to master as much (see Paul Soliai)… he’s a 4-3 DT in Miami where Suh is generally double-teamed.

*in my Vader voice* C’mon, Jordan… your 5.05 (low) 40-speed is MOST impressive for a man your size. Don’t make Suh DESTROY you for your lack of effort. If you only knew the POWER of your potential. I am your watcher.

    Tim

The point is guys have pressure to prove themselves in the NFL faster

If a guy is on a 4 year contract and begins to contribute meaningful production in year 4 – what does the FO do when his contract expires?

You can pay him big $
Or maybe by then you have already drafted his replacement bc the rookie contract is relatively inexpensive

I think a team is more likely to resign a player than has produced for a few years

So the team who drafts a player probably wants to see results sooner that the way it used to be before the CBA

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

      Generally I would say
      The CBA keeps rosters younger

And there is a trickle down effect that affects young players who need to prove themselves

On the other hand, I think the good teams do develop players

Giving up aon a player after their rookie year is kind of ridiculous
But a player like Grant (5th rounder as I recall)
Probably is in make or break mode in 2017

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Oh okay and I agree. But just because a rookie was limited doesn’t put them on notice. That kind of stuff gets said a lot. The same with Carroo. You also have to look at who is ahead of them. I think we all knew Grant would be a project year one as a (6th rd) pick. He was also learning how to return punts in the NFL, didn’t do it in college, he returned kicks.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Its aiight Tim, I have no idea what he’s trying to say either😉

  67. D's avatar D says:

M13, I think you have to consider the amout of rotation Jordan does. Now you can consider that his fault because it’s his conditioning that’s keeping him out, but when the number if snaps per game is so low his chance for tackles also is too low. You also have to consider his snaps may have been majority pass rushing downs, since they used other DTs like Mitchell for the rushing downs. I think it’s just more of a reflection of the thing we all know and the coaching staff has been very forthcoming talking about. He just hasn’t had the conditioning to be effective as much as we need him to be. Judge him by this year’s numbers as those should reflect a guy who is the primary DT and not a situational rotation type guy.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

We all know he’s got the talent, and hasn’t lived up to a 2nd rounder, we don’t need to see stats to prove it. I don’t think it’s a make or break year, but…

  68. D's avatar D says:

I guess a better representation of his production would be tackles, sacks, pressures, etc per snap not per game

  69. D's avatar D says:

I think you bail on 1st year players, in one of two scenarios. 1 they really aren’t your type players and maybe you just made a mistake drafting them and it’s better to just move on because you are sure they aren’t salvageable. We don’t have any of those.

The second scenario we might have, where that guy just doesn’t help our team more than someone else we brought in. It’s possible a few of our guys fit that. Some of them can remain on PS like duarte, and Doughty, others like Grant probably can’t because they were on the active roster too many times. I’m not sure about Caroo, I know he was active a bit, but I’m not sure exactly how many games.

I’m not sure how they feel about Caroo but I think he has a better than average chance to get another year to show up. Grant and Duarte I think are on a very different prediction imo. I can’t say I think either of them have a better than average chance to stick but I kinda root for both of them to step it up and keep their spots.

Some of our previous UDFAs like Hewitt and Hull, etc are at points where we might think about moving on as well. They are up for contract next year and even though they can be RFA tendered, signing or keeping and UDFA from this group if they really like them and having 3 years at a significantly lower pay might be enough to make a business decision. That said I’d say Hewitt is pretty safe, but Hull might not be.

Fede is also coming up for his first extension so if they got a guy to replace him, even with us somewhat shallow in DE depth might make us move on from him as well. These would be business decisions and though I hope they don’t happen, I think it’s a possibility.

Thomas, Aikens, McCain, all also on the list, just with a little more established production to help justify keeping them unless they have just found a baller to make their spot expendable.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

There’s going to be a lot more competition between young players, 4th, 3rd, 2nd and rooks than we’ve had in a long time. That’s a good thing. The team this year will be more of Gase’s team than last year when he was still learning what he had.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

They have more guys hurt this year than I’ve ever seen, and I thought last year they had a lot. The list is astounding. You can barely count David Wright, but Steven Matz, Seth Lugo, Noah Syndergaard, Yoenis Cespedes, Lucas Duda, Asdrubal Cabrera, Travis d’Arnaud, Brandon Nimmo, Juan Lagares (just got back), and we’re only in May! It would be something if they can somehow make a playoff run with all those injuries.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

It’s unbelievable. Than you have to account for guys go through slumps but when half your starting lineup is out along with 3 starting pitchers, it’s basically impossible to play competitive ball.

Dad’s friends were all Cubs fans and we would go to many of their games. I would always wear my Reds hat to Cubs games even if they weren’t playing the Reds. I stole a beer from a fat guy on my way to the bathroom and drank my first beer at age 13 at a Cubs game. I think extra innings are more exciting than say innings 4 through 8.

      • D's avatar D says:

depends on the game, the longer games is when one team is getting worked or neither pitchers are capable of stopping the others batters, aside from keeping them from hitting homers. A dink and dunk high scoring game gets pretty monotonous unless you are just into that kinda thing. Pure pitcher duels are pretty fast games, but again, no real action for the adhd types, so again, seems a lot longer than it is. I stilllike it how it is, but again, from a business aspect and “modernizing the game” i can see what they are aiming to do, only real question is should they. Baseball is the only sport that is pretty much exactly as it started with only minor tweaks to how its played (ie addition of night games and some very minor rule tweaks)

    • D's avatar D says:

Its a money making industry like football, i agree with you i dont want to see the game changed to “speed it up” but they have to appeal to this new adhd generation, in order to compete with football, which is the perfect adhd sport, snap ball, 15-20 seconds, snap ball, over and over and over.

  88. D's avatar D says:

As a LB, the only real thing that needs to be static is who is calling out the assignments, you need a true leader but he can set the defense up no matter where you are lined up, fter that its a lot of read/react, know your gap on any given play, and then see ball get ball. In some ways it has simplified the LB assignments and made it harder for offenses to know exactly what the defense is doing on any given play.

    • BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

Cool thanks. I didn’t realize we were moving them around last year as well. I thought Alonso was playing mlb for the most part and people wanted him to play Sam instead because he wasn’t very good against the run.

  89. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    D

Pretty hard to appeal to those people, it’s just not that kind of game. Little things they can do and are already doing it, is keeping batters from stepping out of the batters box and readjusting the 20 frigging protective guards they have on their elbows, shins, and adjusting their batting gloves etc. That gets old, and slows down the game for nothing.

When you’re at the game, and you have good seats, the game doesn’t seem nearly as long, because you’re much more involved in the action, you can see everything. I think that’s the best way to watch a game.
