Isaiah Ford #15, RD 7, Pick#237

26_5289711

With the 237th pick in the 7th RD, the Dolphins selected their 2nd player on the offensive side of the ball, and a pretty good one too, in WR Isaiah Ford.  The 6’2″ 195 Ford was a very productive receiver at Virginia Tech.  a 3 YR starter, Ford twice went over 1000 yards receiving, and over his 3 YR career at VaTech, he caught 24 TD’s, his best being his Sophomore year, where he had 75 receptions, 1166 yards and 11 TD’s.

Ford brings to the Dolphins the skills to compete for those 50/50 balls, and the size to do it.  He is more of a possession receiver than a deep ball threat, running a 4.61 40 at the combine.  He does run good routes, and has learned how to vary his speed and use short burst quickness to get open.

Isaiah Ford had somewhat of a disappointing mini camp, and finds himself kind of buried on a deep depth chart of WR’s, including Jarvis Landry, Devante Parker, Kenny Stills, Leonte Carroo, Rashawn Scott, and this year’s undrafted free agents Damore’ea Stringfellow, Drew Morgan, Malcolm Lewis and Francis Owusu as well as FA pickup Mitch Matthews.  Obviously, Ford has his work cut out for him, and being drafted won’t put him ahead of any of the guys he’s competing against, only strong performances will.

So that’s it for the 2017 draft class.  We focused on defense, taking 5 of 7 on D,  and improved the depth of our defense significantly, but one more good draft on defense could put us over the top.  On offense, we brought in an OG and a WR later in the draft, and Asiata has a shot at starting this season, despite being a 5th RD pick.  Overall I think we did well, and the team should be better with the help of our ’17 draft class.

GO DOLPHINS!  Zero in!

With all the depth we have at WR it’s really getting harder to justify giving Landry $12+M.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

We have depth, but none of them have half the heart Landry has. He’s a guy you know will always give max effort, and has a desire to succeed that’s through the roof. He’s worth it.

  2. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I give Landry whatever he wants

depth is n o substitute for greatness
He’s probably the best player on our roster

    • son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

Agreed Mr Pig, for the same reason I don’t care what Suh costs I’m keeping Landry here and happy. No “depth” guy is going to bring to this team what Landry brings.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Its not about a depth guy bringing what Landry brings, it’s about the drop off between Landry and his replacement vs what you can do at another position with the saves $.

  3. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Let’s say Morgan pans out, or Grant becomes the slot WR we think he can be, then what? Landry is very good, but he isn’t a game changer, because he doesn’t get into the end zone enough.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I’m not counting on anything from Grant, and someone has to be a go to guy, and Landry is that guy. No offense to Tannehill, but he hasn’t thrown a lot of TD’s to anyone, and in general, is down at least 10 TD’s or more each year to the best QB’s. If Tannehill can get himself to the next level, all the receivers, including TE’s will benefit.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

You don’t have to count on Grant yet, just wait a year on Landry, then use the franchise tag, giving us 2 years to find a replacement. What about Carroo?

  4. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Let’s compare slot WR to a singles hitter in baseball, do you give the singles hitter $20+M?

  5. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Coo Coo Carroo! Carroo ain’t shown nuthin’ yet. Dat boy better show up, or he gonna get cut!

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Let’s say he plays this year like he did at Rutgers, then What? What I’m getting at is at what point do you say we have a replacement and move on? Or do you hope he takes like $10M and sign him?

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

We’ve already shown we value our own talent. He knows this offense, he IS this offense. I hope Carroo does play like he did at Rutgers. That’s a good problem to have. Why can’t we have 4 really good WR’s like the Packers used to have, and maybe still have?

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Too much money into one position?

  6. Phindog's avatar Phindog says:

Landry will get taken care of. He is a top talent and that is what you try to keep.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

I am hoping he sticks, even if am less sure that will happen after they re-signed Stills.
The problem might the price tag his agent wants for the intangibles…..but seems Gase values those in his players as well.

  7. Randy's avatar Randy says:

I think Landry is the only guy we have on offense that actually makes other players better. He’s probably never gone be a 10 TD a year guy because we don’t use him that way….5-7 a year is probably more realistic. I think he can be a Hines Ward sort of player, and it’s really up to Gase to figure out how to use him best. Tannehill is never gonna throw a ton of TDs, so that plays into it too. When your QB only throws 25 TDs a year, nobody is getting a ton. 7 for one guy…especially a possession receiver…is a lot.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I agree – Pretty much said that earlier

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

So you’re locking RTs TDs into what it’s been? Nevermind Parker’s improvement, and Thomas acquisition…and RT himself supposedly having the game slow down for him.

    MEDICAL UPDATES:
It’s been said “bad things come in groups of 3,” or something like that. Tru Dat in my family.
#1) Daughter needs brain surgery to combat Grand Mal siezures. That occurred about 10 or so days ago. SO FAR, NO MORE SEIZURES!!! But we’ll need many more seizure free weeks before the surgery can be called a success..Keeepin’ our fingers crossed!
#2) The beautiful Mrs. OD badly needs foot surgery to, among other things, remove spurs coming out of the bottom and top of her foot. These spurs are wrecking havoc with her tendons in her foot. Surgery is set for next Wednesday. The huge post-op wrapping around her foot will keep her from driving for about 6 WEEKS!! – – THAT’s gonna be a challenge!
#3) Your’s truly messed up his back a few weeks ago. I had an MRI today. Will meet with the surgeon on Monday. He’ll let me know what king of “repairs” I’m going to need. I’ve spent the last 7 days on a walker AND I’ve needed to make TWO trips to the ER. Mrs. OD and ME can’t BOTH be on injured reserve AT THE SAME TIME (This according to our greyhound and our other 2 dogs who require several walks each day.) I’ve been forced to miss two conventions already. A third one is coming up in 2 weeks, which I need to attend because I’m president of the organization that sponsors this show.
    ———–
I guess I’ve got my work cut out for me. But as long as this walker keeps working, I’ll be trying to do what I need to do to keep things going (somewhat). Walking 3 dogs in a walker is a challenge.
Trust me. As is helping the wife. But no one said life is easy. I find I’m a much better person when I complain less and work harder. And that is just what I intend to do. Wish me luck!

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

OD — absolutely great news about your daughter. And sorry as I am about the other two in the three…..that is the most the important one in the long-term.

But man not a good time to mess up your back with your lucky one’s surgery coming up. Find some kid in the neighborhood to walk the dogs though. I can barely walk two without a walker involved.

Goo job Mike wrapping up our draft picks. This is another reason I like our roster this year more than in year’s past, the competition for the 4-6 WR spots should be good.

  11. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

OD – Hoping for the best for you and your fam!

  12. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

That’s a tough stretch OD, hope all’s well soon.

  13. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Randy, you make players better around you by commanding a double team, Parker gets doubles at times too. As for the unconventional version of making players around you better, yeah Landry sets the tone.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Double team is what gets you the big money. And that includes 8 in the box, A TE always in to block a DE, a G helping the C on a DT, a RB not in a route, a spy on the QB and — flip side — the before known Revis Island on their top WR or a LT that lets the TE loose on a route.

  14. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

When the game is on the line you need guys with the Landry attitude, we don’t have anyone else on O, that can do that.

  15. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

When we have Ajayi, Landry, Parker, Stills and Thomas on the field who are teams going to focus on or double? Teams will have to look run first and then react if it’s a pass. If they are playing 8 in the box it’s going to be hard to double anyone. If they do double someone, that leaves multiple guys in single coverage. It should be fun. 🙂

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Key one in that mix for me is Thomas if he works out. And not that he will get doubled outside rezone (even if he might take the deep safeties eyes away from what is going on with Stills )…..but simply cause he will be a TE who does get covered. I liked Simms, but he was an after thought in mid to deep routes. The threat of Thomas going deep might make going 8 in the box against Ajayi more of a problem too.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

A couple of things could derail the offense.

      1) The O-line isn’t great due to Pouncey being out, or both OG’s not playing well.

      2) Julius Thomas doesn’t play like the guy in Denver, and is more like the dud in JAX, and then our depth at TE is exposed.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Lots of reasons for Thomas not being as good in JAX – not as good of a team as Denver, he had some injuries and they didn’t use him as often in the red zone which is absurd. He still caught 9 TDs in two years there in 21 games.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I don’t agree Mike, key word derail. We had 2 OL out at times last year and still got it done, and that was with a 3rd Steen banged up. We dont have Colonblow issues. Thomas cant be any worse than anyone we had at TE last year, and the O didn’t really suffer from it.

  16. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Stanger, that’s what I mean. If you stack the box for Ajayi you’re leaving a lot of guys in single coverage. If they back off and play straight up they’re going to get a lot of Ajayi. Gase said if teams stack the box Thomas is going to see a lot of balls come his way.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

But other side of that is that Thomas is not a good blocker. So am guessing next season you won’t see them stack the box unless Fasano is lined up. But that might have been exactly the threat Gase is putting out in terms of dictating to DCs based on who he lines up.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Well the way we run out of shotgun with zone blocking, all Thomas needs to do is get in the way of a guy for a second or two. When we run from under center and want to pound it, you’ll likely see more Fasano and maybe even Thomas or Gray as well in 2-TE sets. But that’s a different mindset because we’re saying we’re going to run and then doing it even if the opponent knows it.

  17. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Tim

I hope he leaves every reason he was bad in JAX In JAX. We need him to be a receiving threat. Well, not just a threat, a weapon. lol

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Agreed. He said he has no lingering or chronic injuries just some misfortune that’s he’s trying to eliminate by taking care of his body differently. Hopefully it works.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Based on what I read……JAX wanted him to be some kinda of catch and run threat (including wide option screens). Injuries aside (or maybe that is how they happened)….not his style. He’s a long strider get up to speed guy.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Yeah he wasn’t used to his strengths in JAX but in Denver he ran all kinds of routes. The red zone is where he’s most effective although he can make plays all over the field. I’ve seen him score in a bunch of different ways including on a pitch out of the backfield.

  18. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Ajayi improving as a receiver which he’s worked on in the offseason could be another element we didn’t have last year. Drake taking his game to another level as well.

  19. ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

Thanks for the wrap up Mike E

Gase is the only must keep…..he is building a plug and play system. Wont need a $14M slot WR

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I think that number is very high for Landry. I doubt that’s what it’s going to be. I’m not going to worry about what we pay him but I don’t think it will be in that range. I’d say more like $10M per, 5 years $50M something like that.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

They can also structure the deal where the biggest hits come down the road when other high salaries come off the books including even a guy like Suh. Guaranteed money is really what matters.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I’m ok with $10M, higher and I start getting worried.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

“plug and play” is what I am seeing too, but more towards an objective on D at this point. Doesn’t mean O is not next though. Up to Gase on whether he ponies up for Landry, but my best guess is he does……and thinking less than $14 mil, but only cause they lock him up before he hits FA. He will want that lifetime contract.

    Thursday Trivia Question

Dating back to our inception in 1966, the Miami Dolphins have a winning career regular season record against every team in the NFL but for four teams. This isn’t a trick question (ie: Baltimore Colts or Indianapolis Colts… this accounts for the Colts as team, regardless of the city they played in).

Which 4 teams have a winning career regular season record against us?

  21. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

    Giants, Texans, jets?, Dallas

  22. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

  23. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

    So now the question becomes…

Who is the 4th team that owns us in the regular season, and who is the 3rd team that we’ve split with in the regular season?

    OR
let’s hear which other team could have won a road playoff game without their starting QB, Center, and TE?

Name ONE NFL team that could’ve overcome that?

  52. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I have not been aware that the Dolphins have traditionally or recently been a bad weather team. That seems like an easy hindrance to cite, but as one who has lived all my life in the Deep South, I can say only from personal experience that aside from brittle fingers for the skill players on certain types of plays, there is really not much downside to playing football in the cold and almost no homefield advantage to it beyond having experience with gloves and scarfs and such.

We beat KC in our coldest game ever, and we beat Pitt in the snow. The snow plow game does not count against us, and the Denver disadvantage is more the altitude than the cold.

Buffalo might be our only real historical weather issue, but Buffalo fans pulling fire alarms at night in our hotel and other unfair crap has been just as big a factor.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

It’s a stereotype, because we play in the heat in FLA. If you can run the ball consistently, and play a little defense, you’re a cold weather team. Unless we’re talking about extreme weather, like zero with wind, we can play in the cold weather as well as any northern team can. On the flip side, I think our heat advantage is a little overrated too, because most teams play in warm weather in September and October, so it’s not a huge difference playing the Jets or Patriots in September in MIA, when they’re coming from 70-80 degrees in the NE.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Wow! I don’t think the cold weather games will bother us this year, but hard to say it hasn’t affected us in the past. When you have a bad team and everything needs to go right to win, the cold comesinto play more.

It was a great atmosphere, and I think one of the big differences between the game back then and the game today was the closeness we had to our fans. It made the whole experience of playing at the Orange Bowl so special. We would get done playing a game and would go out of the locker room to meet our wives at the south end of the field. Once we got to the parking lot we’d go and sit down with the fans who were tailgating there and have sandwiches and beer with them. We’d sit there and celebrate with them for several hours. We didn’t make much money back in those days — I was making about $15,000 back then, and many of our fans were making more money than I was.

Here’s a hint: when Daunte Culpepper put up that ASTOUNDING 69.3% in 2004, he didn’t even lead the league!

  57. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I may as well let the cat out of the bag being I gave up too much data. BRIAN GRIESE (son of Bob) put up a stellar 69.3% in 2004 for the Tampa Bay Bucs… the year after we released him (oh, the irony).

  58. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

We’ve employed some VERY accurate QBs in the recent past. Some we gave up on too early, some we got past their expiration dates, and some just didn’t click. The greatest irony is we went with Culpepper (knee) over Brees (passing shoulder)… we all know how that turned out. We made the logical ‘no-brainer’ decision, but Brees beat the odds while Pep flamed out.

    All-Time CAREER Completion %s
    ————
    #1: Brees (66.6)
    #2: Mr. Pennington (66.0)
    #16: Daunte Culpepper (63.0)
    #17: Ryan Tannehill & Brian Griese (62.7)
    #27: David Garrard (61.6)
    #33: Trent Green (60.6)
    #49: Dan The Man (59.4)
    #51: Chad Henne (59.3)

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Consider there are 32 starting QBs in the NFL today. Then consider how many QBs have played the game over the years (100s) Tannehill is #17 ALL-TIME in completion percentage. He’s in good company with the above names (minus the “Robot”, LOL).

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Consider the rules were changed, not allowing the DBs to mug receivers, and you can see why RT is 17. Even Brady’s is affected by the old rule.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Too right, Steve. The rule changes certainly have had an affect, especially when comparing different generations of players. Nevertheless, Tannehill is doing alright in terms of completion percentage.

Hopefully, Julius Thomas and DeVante become those sorely needed redzone targets that Tanny has lacked since 2012. There are NO MORE EXCUSES for Tannehill not to become a top-10 QB. He even has the support of a running game (finally!) with Ajayi and a potentially very good O-Line (contingent upon Pouncey’s health).

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Also comp% is a strength of his, and can be one of the most misleading stats, so take his ranking with a grain of salt.

  59. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

“Also comp% is a strength of his, and can be one of the most misleading stats, so take his ranking with a grain of salt.”

Yeah, the accepted line was that he completed a lot of passes because they were dump offs or short passes, but that has not been accurate for the past few years. Tanny was #8 in the league last year in yard per pass average at 7.70

    AND

Tannehill’s overall accuracy of 64.1% was 4th in 2016, and his accuracy on throws of 20+ was 61.0%, The 2nd highest (only behind Derek Carr). So it isn’t what the narrative says it is.

  60. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I have a trivia question for you guys. Who set the NFL record for the most consecutive completed passes in NFL history?

    Hint: It occurred in 2105.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I’m not sure I want to downsize, but I can’t say for sure. I have one out of college, and the other has 3 years left, and at least at the moment, I don’t see myself downsizing in 3 years. I understand that 3 years is a long time, and reserve the right to change my mind. lol

I am certainly not advocating for doing it. We just knew it was time.

    Kenny Stills — 35 receptions, 575 yards,6 TDs

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

That’s such a shot in the dark. I guess that’s what they do this time of year. LOL

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

What we do as well though….so can’t blame Walker. Does show where his thoughts are going still. And who knows, but this idiot is at least thinking that Stills is going to be catching a lot of deep passes next year……so thinking his average per catch is going to be off the charts (even if think his TD number will be down…he got a little lucky on the 9 last year).

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

To me the stats in the passing game all depend on how we run the ball. If we’re a top rushing team we might see higher YPCA and big plays then high catch totals.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Absolutely…..and particularly about Stills. The better the running game is going the more chances he will get over the top. The more say 3rd and fives we get, the more Landry’s stats will go up, least his total yards and receptions.

  71. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Stanger, exactly! The goal of the offense this season is to stay on the field longer sustaining drives and the running game is key to that. I don’t want Landry getting 100 or more catches. I’d be happier if he was around 80. 3rd and 5 or more too often is what hurt us last year.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

I’d have no problem with Landry getting 100 catches if the reason is cause Parker demands all the attention. So many factors involved……part of why I like how Gase considers them, even if the way he does makes me think the Phins players will not be good FF studs. Tanny is hot…..here is more Ajayi, etc.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I’m just saying It’s not all about Landry having crazy catch totals which is something he prides himself on. You have the other WRs, the TEs lead by Thomas and then the RBs. Spread it around while pounding the rock.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Completely agree with you on that. Guess was just would could happen if all Landry saw was single coverage, which would pretty much mean Parker is a force, Thomas is looking great and/or Ajayi and the guys up front are having a great year. Have a feeling Gase will exploit whatever he can on O.

  72. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Stanger, yeah Gase is trying to create a balanced mismatch offense that could change from week to week. That’s why I’ve been saying I haven’t seen this much talent and/or options at the skill positions on this team in a long time.

  73. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    The goal of the offense:

    Score
    And score and score
    And oink
    And score and score

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Not just that, TOP and penalties hurting our down and distance. I’m glad the coaches are all over those stats.

  74. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Gase on Misi below — bottom line seems to be don’t hold your breathe, But guess we already knew that when he restructured for the real low contract.

“I don’t know. We’re not there yet. When you see him start running around or something, then I’d say we’re close…..We’ve gotta make some adjustments there. The fact is that the guy wants to be here and we’re gonna give him an opportunity to compete for a spot. I don’t see any harm in that. He’s a guy I like being around.”

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Everything with Misi is different now, since his salary is that of a backup, if he just plays special teams and backup LB were good. He’s certainly better than anyone we’ve had in a while at backup LB. People always try to make it more than it is.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Reporters ask Gase questions way before its time to talk about something, then try to read something into it.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Right with you on that. Dude just had neck fusion surgery. Don’t know what that means for an NFL player…..but even that would leave me wondering when I can go to the store again.

  76. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Happy Anniversary to you and your wife Naples!

  77. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

ok so here’s one of those Dolphins trivia questions like the ones from MF13 (which stands for Marino Fan 13 [as in Dan’s #]).

I know SteveCCNV loves these. I went to church this morning … ok so it was only the contemporary Rock Music service, but still I went…I always go when my anniversary falls on a Sunday. (wink).

So here’s the question. When did my church (North Naples Methodist) start being a church?
(no googling … you know this … I already gave you a hint.)

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Obviously the answer is 1962, 🙂

You and your lovely have to venture over Alligator Alley for a Fest some year. So happy for you guys…….if I hit 40 years the new Willard Scott will be talking about my age too.

      • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

        LOL
It is so close to drive over; now that all my sons are finished school, maybe we can make it to a Fest.

Less subtle hint: my church and the Miami Dolphins are the same exact age.

Things like that amaze me. Back then North Naples was a new term and it was about 15 miles south of where most people think it is now. There is now a solid city from Marco Island to Cape Coral with over a million people. Back when the Dolphins team started, Naples had about 7000 people.

  78. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Thanks …well we tried to go to the beach to catch some live music but hoo boy another tropical thundershower swamped the venue. Everybody was soaked to the skin before they could get under cover. Big resort umbrellas blowing around like beach towels..
About 3 inches of water in a solid sheet flooding across the deck right towards the beach. So much for a romantic Gulf Sunset for us to celebrate with.

      oh you meant football.
      Go Dolphins.

  80. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I was thinking about this lineup option. Once we’re inside the 20 we could easily go with 3 TEs – Fasano and Gray with Thomas serving as a big possession WR along with Landry and Ajayi in the backfield. We can pound the rock with a bigger lineup but still have receiving options.

This offense has a chance to be very versatile and dangerous. Tannehill is always a threat to run as well.

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

and after chipping both the blocking TEs could flare out and you have 5 receivers at 3 levels.
      Great idea Tim.

This is why it’s so important to have our O-Line fixed, at least in terms of pass-protection. Scroll down to the final chart if you aren’t interested in reading the whole article…

    https://www.footballoutsiders.com/stat-analysis/2017/quarterbacks-and-pressure-2016

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I thought one of the comments was good that this statistical analysis might bridge the gap between Tannehill haters and supporters. During his whole career he is the 8th best NFL QB with no pressure, but he has the worst difference between success against pressure and vs a clean pocket.

Partly that was because of only 17 starts in college and partly from running for his life all the time with the putrid line play he has had and partly it was taught to him by overly conservative OCs and HC. And partly it is Ryan’s weakness for real.

Here’s hoping Gase continues to teach Tannehill how to handle pressure by quicker throws and sliding up or to his right in the pocket.

  83. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I saw an interesting article on Aaron Rodgers that could be useful for Gase in tutoring Tannehill just in case any of you guys can get this info to Coach.

Rodgers appears to have an extraordinary success rate when scrambling. However come to find out, a large portion of those plays that look like total improvisation by Rogers are actually scripted and practiced.

His tackles are taught to influence the pass rushers to the inside which makes them feel like they have a more direct route to Aaron, but it’s all part of the play and as soon as he sees a DE trapped inside, he steps outside the tackle box to that side and basically has a clear throwing lane downfield.
Of course the WR is also in on the play and has the choice of either breaking off the pattern and coming back for the ball or decoying till the last second and then looking for the extreme back-shoulder throw. On some plays the video showed the WR lazing out in a shallow arc and then slashing inside which put his body in front of the DB and gave Aaron a good look at his numbers.

They thus reduce the target area to half the field or even a third of the field with receivers coming into it, accelerating out of it downfield or just floating into dead space and signalling Aaron to throw it. All designed and not really a scramble at all. This has the added benefit of his passes being 90% length and very little wasted distance across the field, thereby the ball gets there in a hurry and he can appear to throw a lot farther because he is so often throwing in a straight line.

  84. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Here ya go, Naples. This is from one of my favorite funk bands [S.O.S. Band (the greats Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis on the production)].

I’d say that you and the Mrs. took your time and did it right… just like this song states…

  85. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Gase says things to the media and people seem to take it as fact. I’m included in that. 2 examples are RT having the game slow down for him in the game he got hurt and Bushrod being rated the 2nd best OL by the team. I’m not so sure this isn’t a smokescreen.

  86. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

    Observation:

As I peer over last year’s numbers (situational and extensive statistics) and coupled with the collective injuries we sustained, it’s actually AMAZING we finished 10-6. At least to me, it’s CLEAR that Gase ‘miracled’ us to success despite the inconsistencies.

Gase is out there playing a game of chess while most others are playing checkers. THAT is what good coaching can do for your team. And while I’m not quite ready to predict our final record for ’17, I’m exceptionally confident that major strides are going to be made in year 2 of Gase’s system.

    Growth success for ’17…
-Tannehill taking the next step under Gase
-Ensure that the O-Line is primed for pass-protection
-‘500 year leap’ for both DeVante and Jordan Phillips (it’s gon’ happen for both!!!)
-One of our young CBs opposite Maxwell emerging

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

What Gase was able to do was get everyone on the same page, which allowed us a chance to win some close games. Kiko’s game winner in SD was my play of the year, I think preparation allowed that play to happen, it was very Belicheatesque.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

        HELL YEAH!!!

100% with ya on Kiko having the PLAY OF THE YEAR in ’16! And certainly preparation allowed it to occur. Kiko’s a student of the game and he’s a PERFECT fit on an Adam Gase-coached team.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

No question 10-6 was a miracle given the injuries. In years past we won when everything went right, last year we overcame a lot of issues during the game.

  87. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Gase got everyone to buy in and keep fighting. The players don’t want to let the coaches or their teammates down. He’s built a family culture in a very short period of time and it’s still growing.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Thats an aspect of what he’s done, and its allowed to happen, because the players believe in him/system. With that said we should be better this year, yet the media just focuses on a difficult schedule and lucky wins last year.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Not counting last year, I’ve noticed a lot of AFC playoff games won on YAC, so if we can get into a close playoff game we have guys that can get it done, and Juice is at the top of the list.

  89. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

We seem to have the big plays, what we need is to make more 3rd down conversions, keeping drives alive.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

And in order to make more 3rd Down conversions, we’ve got to start executing on 1st Down and cut out the mental lapses that lead to penalties (ie: 1st and 20).

  90. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

continuing on with what steve said above–
it just came out that 70% of Ajayi’s yards came on yds after first contact. (2nd in NFL)

  91. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

in answer to “last yr’s schedule was easy” let’s not use how it turned out to judge, because part of what made those other teams look bad was the Miami Dolphins beating their asses. (twice each in the case of the jests and jills)

Let’s go back to how the season looked before last season started.
We had to open with 2 on the road. Every team hates that and they were at Seattle and at NE which are 2 notoriously hard places to win at.
We had to play Buffalo and NY Jets and both of them swept the Dolphins the year before.
We had a back to back West Coast road trip which is usually deadly for an east coast team.
We had 2 games against the perennial Super Bowl dynasty.
We had to play Pittsburgh and Baltimore, two of our frequent nemeses, and we had to play the Cardinals and Bengals, two playoff teams from the year before. We did have SF and the Browns.
    ALSO
We had lost two of our best young studs to FA (Miller and Vernon)
We had a first year GM,
    a first year HC,
    and a first year DC.
I already listed the multiple injuries above.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

That’s pretty much how I see it too, and say so every year. Last year they said our schedule was harder than the year before too, but didn’t turn out that way.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Naples — did like seeing how on some of those games we treated them like we used to be. It was take no chances as far as mistakes knowing that you could turn it on if needed at the end. And even if we were only better cause who we were playing was not…..smart moves by Gase.

  93. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Sporting New named Suh the fifth-most hated player in the National Football League. I don’t have a problem with that, even if think the reason is from when he was with Detroit.

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

yeah and Tom Brady was #1.
I read that article and there was no certain rationale or formula or even a poll cited as source or support for the listing. I do not consider it “scientific” therefore and feel it is based on past penalties and suspensions as you say.
He did interview an OL who called Suh a psychopath and then clarified that as being a good thing.
If it means OL hate to have to line up against Suh, then that is fine with me.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

“Tom Brady was #1.”….well that was scientifically-based, well-researched and completely deserved. 🙂
