How Ryan Tannehill is quietly putting together an “Elite” career

How Ryan Tannehill is quietly putting together an “Elite” career

Miami Dolphins v Buffalo Bills

It’s that time of the year when we have run out of Dolphins stuff to talk about.  Training camp is about two weeks away and any news we hear at this time of year about our players would probably be bad news. (Injuries, arrests, scandals, etc) No news is good news during this period but that doesn’t create interest on this board so I decided to try my hand at stirring the pot a little.

Photo #2

No subject seems to generate as many posts and responses on here and other Dolphins sites as the performance of Ryan Tannehill.  Fans seem to either like him or hate him with very few in between.

The “Haters” and “Tanne-shills” have been at it going on 6 years now with little or no movement towards the middle ground.  Because I am a shameless homer and Kool-aid junky I am going to attempt to show how Tannehill is currently on par with some of the “greats” up to this point in their careers.   A few years from now when the Dolphins have seen more TEAM success and have a couple of Rings this will all be generally accepted.

Photo #3

As we all know Ryan Tannehill came into the league as a fist round draft pick but had very little starting experience as a QB in college, having elected to play wide receiver rather than sit behind the QB’s already on the roster so he could, you know, play football. He started off his career playing average to below average football as might be expected from a QB with so little experience in college.  His detractors pointing out his flaws relentlessly. He couldn’t throw a deep pass, he couldn’t read defenses, he had no pocket presence, he was a terrible red-zone passer, etc. etc.

Then something happened.  He started getting better, every year, at things that were is weaknesses in previous seasons.  Go figure! A young player actually developing? His deep ball improved greatly,St. Louis Rams v Miami Dolphins his red-zone play improved, his ability to read defenses and beat the blitz increased, to the point where he is among the top 5-10 QB’s in the league at these things.

He keeps getting better. This brings me to the comparison to “elite” Quarterbacks in the league. The Tom Brady’s, Peyton Manning’s, Ben Roethlisburger’s (and argued by many) Matt Ryan’s & Andrew Luck’s of the NFL did not start out as “elite” players. They started out as “average to below average” players.  They just continued to get better at their trade as time went along until one day they were considered “elite”.  If you look at the chart below you will see that Tannehill’s stats are on par or better in some cases than those of these players at this point in their careers (5 seasons)

Player                             Att        Comp     Pct          Yds            Avg     TD        TD%    Int       Rating

 Drew Brees                  361.80   225.00    60.82     2,469.60     7.08    16.00    4.32   10.60       86.64
 Andrew Luck              530.20   314.00    58.96     3,815.60     7.12    26.40    5.00   13.60       86.26

** Note: Average stats have not been adjusted for missed games due to sitting or Injury

The chart above shows the AVERAGES of the first five years in the league for Ryan Tannehill and 6 other quarterbacks who many argue are the “Elite” of the NFL; Tom Brady, Ben Roethlisburger, Peyton Manning, Drew Brees, Andrew Luck and Matt Ryan.  Here is what I see when I look at these stats;

  • Ryan Tannehill is the MOST accurate passer of the bunch through the first five years.
  • He has the third least Interceptions per year and 3rd lowest Interception percentage
  • He has thrown for the 4th most yards per year of the bunch. (Average)
  • He has thrown the 3rd most completions per year (Average)

These numbers are not compared to rank and file of the NFL. These are comparisons with the so-called “Elite” of the league and in this company he stacks up pretty well.

The most encouraging part of this comparison is this: Ryan Tannehill keeps getting better and better. Just like these other “Elite” QB’s have.

Ryan Tannehill has accomplished this with a lesser supporting cast than many of these other quarterbacks while being one of the most sacked QB’s in his first 5 years.  Imagine if he wasn’t throwing all those passes from his back!

Photo #5

Now that he is working with a Head Coach and Offensive Coordinator who understand his strengths and weaknesses and know how to maximize the first and correct the second, the SKY IS THE LIMIT! GO DOLPHINS!  GO TANNEHILL!

****

I know this article will not sway anyone one way or the other, but it will generate discussion, which is what most of us come here for. We will have to wait until all is said and done before we can say for certain that Ryan Tannehill is an Elite QB, but based upon the evidence he is on the right track.

Let the discussion (arguments & ridicule) begin!

    Rockphin,

Good write, illustrating Tannehill vs some of the modern day and so-called “elites”.

This is a TEAM GAME, and the QB can only go so far as his team allows. I suggest Tanny could have been even better with a legit O-Line over the last 5 seasons (shame on you, Jeff Ireland, Joe Philbin, and Mike Sherman).

Nevertheless, Tannehill has yet to put the team on his shoulders and DOMINATE like a so-called “elite” does and can, even without talent surrounding him (can’t say that this year, perhaps even last year).

To me, Tanny is a mixed bag to this point with his needle still pointing northward in terms of “elite” status. For what it’s worth, I DO believe in him with Gase as his HC. Let’s see how Tannehill does this year… my hopes are HIGH!!!

    Again, good write, Rockphin!

Good job Rock! As I mentioned on the previous post, IMO, Tannehill played at an absolutely elite level last year from the Pittsburgh game on. Had the bump in the road vs Baltimore, but was shredding Arizona the very next week. It’s going to be nice to see what he does under Gase.

  6. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

All he has to do now is keep improving a LITTLE bit on his weaknesses and have the team win consistently for the next few years and he will be in the conversation outside the Dolphinsphere.

  7. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Thanks DBolt. I agree with you about last year. You could see when the light came on. I happened to coincide with the improved running game so it was attributed to the pieces around him being better by his detractors.

  8. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

The most Elite QB (Statistically) I did not include in the list above. I didn’t include him because if you put his stats up against all the rest he made ALL of them look inferior.

That quarterback we could have had 20 picks after Ronnie Brown.

    Aaron Rogers

Unfortunately Cam gets the same treatment as RT. When he’s getting his head caved in due to shit play around him it’s all his fault. Can’s a good player who, like RT, has been adversely affected by their surroundings.

Here’s why I love reading articles from reporters around the league, jets reporter Cimini says the Fins will take a step back this year, because we have some age on D. WTF? Besides Wake, who hasn’t shown indications he’s slowing down, who from last year is old?

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I hope you are not rooting to be right rather than rooting for the team. Because you are going to be disappointed either way.

  21. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Rock,
I HOPE Tannehill ends his career with 5 Super Bowl wins and goes into the HOF, but that doesn’t mean I can’t have an opinion of the player he truly is. Hoping for team success and being rational in evaluating players are completely different things. Not agreeing that one of our players is elite doesn’t mean I root against him or the team. That’s just something people throw out there to discredit differing opinions. Tannehill is, by any credible and objective criteria, an average NFL QB. Saying that doesn’t mean I don’t want him or the team to succeed.

  22. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

My problems with comparing his stats to the elites are rule changes, stats on its own, and the fact that you could compare his stats with other players that had pretty good first 5 years, then returned to being a JAG, and come to the same conclusion.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Strangely — one thing that concerns me the most about Tanny, also gives me hope. The guy who holds the consecutive completion record for the team can go deer in headlights at times, including key ones. That might be correctable.

  23. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

J Walker — “I expect only one playoff team from the AFC East”….quiz of the day is not which one.

“The Dolphins have a chance, but they have the sixth-toughest strength of schedule and nine road games, if you include the “home” date in London. That’s going to catch up to them. Miami won 10 games last year beating up on a last-place schedule, and the team won’t have that luxury this season. The Dolphins might be a better and deeper team, but right now I don’t expect them to produce double-digit wins.”

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I read that, it just means Walker has no balls to make a bold prediction, he’d rather sit back and take the puss way out, noncommittal.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Can’t say I disagree with him though…..but a difference for me now is that can’t rule out the chance of them putting in a serious playoff run either. More thinking 2018 for that, but the cards could fall for it this year too.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

My problem with his comments are he’s talking like a guy stating the obvious about the schedule and not like a guy that covers the team. We can’t be worse at LB this year and DB, barring injuries, add DL and safety and its a much improved D. The O gets a healthy Parker and Julius to an otherwise similar unit.

  24. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I won’t be shocked, if RT starts getting mentioned as being/approaching elite status this year. I’d be surprised, if he didnt continue to improve this year. With that said, i think he has a better chance, in the next 5 years, to be in the elite discussion, than not.

  25. Randy's avatar Randy says:

I’d rather our team be elite than any one player. I’m hoping we continue to build a complete TEAM that accomplishes great things. I don’t really care what one player does stats-wise. If the team is winning and improving, that’s all that matters.

Nice article Rock! I am on the fence with Tannehill, but I think that his arrow is point up since Gase has arrived. It was hard to judge him when he was being pressured/sacked every other play. It will be interesting to see what he can do with a healthy OL (praying) and another year in Gase’s offense. Go Dolphins!

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Team game, Boulder. Some really good QBs do their part and their teams don’t make the postseason because the team isn’t that good. See Drew Brees and Phillip Rivers.

What Tannehill needs to do is make sure he’s not the reason the team didn’t make it.

  33. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

The headline was a hook. I didn’t quite ever say that he was elite only that he compared well statistically with the QB’s who many consider elite at this point in their careers. TEAM success is what separats the “elite” in my opinion. I think Aaron Rodgers is the best quarterback in a generation and I think Tom Brady is an excellent system quarterback who has been in the same system his whole career which happens to be a good system but athletic ability and skill Grady is nowhere near Rogers but he has had a lot more success so he is considered “more Elite” if that makes any sense

  34. Randy's avatar Randy says:

I like Tanny. He seems like a good kid and is a hard worker. That’s really all you can ask. Work hard…give effort. He does. I hope he just keeps getting better and better. This team has bigger areas of concern. We need the OL to get better and play more consistently. We need our whole defense…and LBers especially…to get better against the run. We need more consistent play from everybody. I like what Gase has done so far…let’s see if he can help them take another step this season.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I think the second season without a lot of turnover but some promising additions is the key. Then injuries are always an issue. We’ll see but I see a lot of promise with this team. We have talent from rooks to 2-4 years to core vets. This is the best potential roster I have seen in a long time.

  35. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Tim,
The NFL has just become a younger league. Every team is younger than they used to be 10-20 years ago. It’s a young man’s game. We have a pretty good blend of guys who should be entering productive parts of their careers. Now they need to start learning how to win together. Last year was a step towards that. We need to take another. The talent needs to step up.

  36. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I love this argument, especially in baseball: who is the League MVP? Is it the best player on the best team, or is it the best player in the league? The way I see it, it’s called the “LEAGUE MVP” for a reason… as opposed to the “MVP of the Best Team in the League” award.

Why do I bring this up, you may ask? Because one can be Dan Marino and STILL not win the Super Bowl. Yet, one can be the little Trent Dilfer and WIN the Super Bowl.

The definition of a so-called “elite” as a QB befuddles me. Seems Tannehill will be judged by how many rings “he” wins, and not by his individual accomplishments (see Marino).

TEAMS win games, not individuals. And THAT is why wins/losses by QBs (or pitchers in baseball) are QUACK STATS. Give me ERA in baseball, and Passer Rating in football. Tannehill is reminding me of Tom Glavine, just hitting his stride for the Atlanta Braves on time. Give your QB/pitcher support, and he’s going to win some games.

Games 11 and 13 are against the Pats. McDonald is activated in game 9. I think he’s the Gronk matchup. Big safety in nickel and dime who can hit and tackle but also matchup against specific opponents. Teams with top TEs are going to get him second half.

  41. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

We’ve had four QBs in Dolphins history to have started 50+ games. They are Dan Marino, Bob Griese, Jay Fiedler, and Ryan Tannehill (that’s two HOF QBs in Marino and Griese, for those keeping score at home).

Tannehill has the best CMP%, INT%, and Passer Rating of the four. The only key stat that he comes in last is TD%: the emergence of DeVante and the acquisition of Julius Thomas should vastly help Tannehill in redzone situations.

If our pass-protection is improved from last year, Tannehill is going to ball in year 2 of Gase’s Offense. Opposing Defenses must now keep an extra hat on Ajayi in order to contain him… this will serve Tannehill very well.

My floor for Tannehill in 2017: 4,000 yards, 30 TDs, and 95 Passer Rating.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Hard to compare players from different eras though when it comes to stats as the NFL (and the rules) has turned more pass happy…..especially with safer passes on what before were pure run downs. That makes the completion and int percentages look better….and those are both part of the QB rating.

Of the QBs played enough to qualify, not one of top 10 in career completion percentage threw an NFL pass before 1998. Is interesting that four for the top twenty played for the Phins……and none of them wore #12 or #13.

    Stanger,

You’re absolutely correct that it’s hard to compare players from different generations and for your reasons given; you’ll get no rebuttal from me. Nevertheless, Tannehill is in good company amongst his contemporaries as a far better measure.

Tannehill and Andrew Luck are VERY close in comparison but for TD%. Expect Tanny to improve on as much this year for my reasons given above.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Your floor is still closer to my ceiling…..but man do I hope you are right. And I think he will improve too, but mainly cause we have the guy in place to both teach him, is picking players to set him up for that, and to game plan around his strengths.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I think the KEY is to game-plan around Tannehill’s strengths… but that should be the key for EVERY QB.

My grief regarding Tannehill is his lack of pocket awareness and read-progression. As such, I find it imperative to surround him with pass-protection pros on our O-Line. Do this, and he’ll truly ball.

Every QB has his Achilles heel… I just told y’all what Tanny’s is. Fix it and watch him flourish.

I like what Gase and Co. have done with the D talent this year, so they won’t have to change the D from week to week. It’s nice to change up the D during the game to try to confuse the O, but not week to week out of necessity, with no where to go to adjust.

  47. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

If you believe we’re a playoff team, like I do, then it shouldn’t bother you that McDonald is out the first 8 games, as he’ll be there in the 2nd half and for the playoffs, so great pick up. In other words the games that really matter.

  48. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

We all know from playing Fantasy Football that stats don’t equal greatness. How many times have we seen a team get a big lead from TOs and STs help only to have the QB with very modest numbers, while the other teams QB has huge stats in garbage time? I had Eli one year and he had 4 or 5 games that year where I thought he’d killed it based on the score, only to find out his points sucked. Sure things will average out over the course of a year, but how were Rivers’ stats the year LaDanian had the 30 TDs? Again I know an anomaly, but still worth noting how stats can be skewed.

Um, we beat the Cheats the last game of 2015 to keep them from getting home field advantage throughout the playoffs, RT being hurt wasn’t the reason we couldn’t compete with the Steelers in the playoff game, it was all the injuries on D. They can’t seem to figure out how to validate a story.

For example the “writer” wonders about the difference between the Bengals’ last two seasons on defense
without it ever dawning on him that they lost Vance Joseph to us.
People may think that was not a big loss, given Miami’s defensive stats, but the man had to overcome multiple losses to injury and still got us into the playoffs and then got rewarded with a head coaching job. Maybe he was the glue holding the aging HC in Cincinnati together recently.
(They also lost our current DC at the same moment, compounding the huge hole left in their defensive coaches’ room.) No mention of that either.

Sorry for the late response. I don’t check the site as often these days.

As I was writing that post I said to myself I bet Tim is gonna say it’s a team game. Lol

We’ve been at it for too long😄 I like Tannehill. I thought he had a great.year last year. I just think in this league QBs only get respect when they get their teams to the playoffs. That means beating teams they’re suppose to beat and winning games in the 4th quarter.

Tannehill under gaze has shown he can do that. I just want him to do it again.

    More interesting results for us.

Note: Jarvis Landry is NOT a “No. 1 wideout” for us, despite what this article states to the contrary. #1 targeted? YES. Base alpha/#1/boundary? NO, and that’s exactly why he’s utilized in the slot so often… and also why he’s not going to get paid long-term $$$ like a Megatron. That doesn’t mean he can’t ever play the boundary (Davone Bess could and did, too), but his measurables/skills are perfect for slot play. It IS great that he has the ability to be flexed around– inside and out — and that gives him VALUE.

Base alpha/#1/boundary WRs are generally either 6’2″+, undersized but possessing BLAZING speed to gain separation, or undersized yet physical freaks of nature such as Steve Smith, Jr. (VERY rare breed). Jarvis ROCKS, but he’s none of the above… yet it CAN be said that he’s one of the best all-around WRs in the league. And that is exactly why there is an impasse regarding his contract right now… what’s he worth? He’ll be re-signed, I trust.

Dan Marino ranks second all-time in NFL history in game-winning drives with 51 and third all-time in fourth-quarter comebacks with 36. And that was good enough to get him to #9 on this “all-clutch” list that also included playoff performance and rings.
    ———————
“Then Scott Kacsmar formally defined the terms “fourth-quarter comeback” and “game-winning drive” in the mid-2000s, researched the totals throughout NFL history and created the comeback data now seen at Pro Football Reference. The shocking result: Marino led 36 career comebacks, Elway 35. With Tom Brady and Peyton Manning still in mid-career at the time, Marino and Johnny Unitas were pro football’s all-time comeback kings.”

MF13 — I totally agree on the difference between a WR who catches the most balls on the team and the ACTUAL #1 WR position, which MUST be a split wide speed AND height guy. On the current Dolphins, Parker is our #1, Stills is our #2, and Landry is our #3 — by POSITION in the formation. (usually) So, Mike Wallace is a #1 WR anywhere he goes, although he’s not a great one.

Thus Landry is NOT a prototype #1 WR even though I love his production & his heroic leadership, and I don’t want to lose the guy unless he is priced out of Miami. (See Olivier Vernon)

A really good thing is that both Stills and Parker are very successful at YAC in the slot and Landry got a ton of YAC out wide, last year especially. Landry lobbied hard to get those throws; he wanted this to raise his dollar value, so he could get paid like a #1. That article you cited said all this.

What do you guys think… had Marino’s team(s) won a Super Bowl(s), would he be considered by most pundits as the greatest QB of all-time? I would say an unequivocal YES, but that’s just me… and I already think he’s the greatest QB of all-time. What say you?

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Ted Williams never won a world series and he’s considered the best hitter of all time. Teams win championships. Ranking players based on championships is silly to me. Barry Sanders anyone?

  90. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Do ANY of these pundits (with the exception of Ray Rhodes’ first statement) realize how difficult it is to put the ball into the breadbasket of two ‘midget’ WRs in Clayton and Duper, while they were getting ‘ping-ponged’ across the field (no DB 5-yard rule back then) by DBs in the 80s and 90s?

It’s INCREDIBLE what Marino did, and nobody has even come CLOSE to matching him under the old rules. Of modern QBs, MAYBE Peyton Manning could come close under the old rules… but not even he could ever match Marino.

I’m actually astonished by nobody responding to this fact. Ajayi is in OUTSTANDING company… he’s not just a guy who had a good year.

It’s only been done 42 times since the 1970 merger, or less than once per year by ANYBODY… and most who have done this are repeaters and GREAT.

    Here’s the whole list—> http://pfref.com/tiny/pXieC

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I won’t be surprised if Ajayi has an even better season this year. Remember he put those numbers up after only having 31 carries the first 5 games. He became the bell cow week 6 against PIT. This year he will be that from game 1.

  92. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I hate when they just throw stats out there, like RT has issues taking care of the ball, because he had 12 ints last year. He had 7 the first 5 weeks when the team was trying to figure things out, then 1 the next 6 weeks, before everything fell apart against Balt. Then one in the heavy rain against AZ.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Sure he had Landry short over the middle to throw easy completions too, but he’s yet to have that safety valve TE. Let’s hope Julius fixes that.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Not just a safety valve, but a weapon at TE.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I was just talking in terms of helping out RT when things break down. Take Romo for example, he’d be pressured, about ready to go down, then out of no where he’d find Witten wide open. RT has never had that type of guy to help him out when things weren’t going favorably.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

12 picks isn’t a bad number. I know it’s over 13 games, but like you pointed out INTs don’t happen 1 per week. Maybe RT plays the last 3 games without throwing one. RT is not a big TO machine, never has been. What he needs to do a better job of is helping the team get into the endzone more.

In my 50+ years as a season ticket holder, I have seen IN PERSON every great quarterback beginning with Bart Starr and Johnny Unitas (in the old NFL runner-up bowl played at the historic Orange Bowl prior to the Dolphins first season). Peyton, Manning, Bret Favre, Tommy-girl and his band of convicted cheaters, and Joe Montana. Marino was THE BEST because he excelled and broke records playing for mostly average Dolphin teams that usually lacked a credible running game and a Top 10 defense. Put any other “Top 10” QB on those teams and they’d be lucky to have a career winning record over Marino’s 17-year career!
