Training Camp and other tidbits

Yessir!  Back to Football!

Man, I’d much rather hear back to football than back to school.  Still to this day, hearing back to school depresses me, and I’ve been out of school for a very long time, thousands of years.  On the other hand, MIAMI DOLPHINS FOOTBALL is BACK!!!  Training camp is ON!

This training camp should really be an interesting one to watch.  There are a few important positions up for grabs, and one that just cropped up due to Koa Misi being placed on IR.  Before Misi was even placed on IR, an intriguing battle was to take place on the O-line, presumably at LG, with Laremy Tunsil now the LT, Pouncey possibly ready to return to C, Jermon Bushrod set to play RG, and Ju’Wuan James set at RT.    Who will win the LG spot?  Ted Larsen, Anthony Steen, Kraig Urbik, OR, the fan favorite rookie 5th RD pick Isaac Asiata?

The other important battle will be between Neville Hewitt and rookie 2nd RD pick Raekwon McMillan at OLB.  This is one I can’t wait to see.  CB is another highly contested area of competition, especially now that we’ve added veteran CB Alterraun Verner, who is likely going to give nickel corner Bobby McCain his moneys worth.  Besides the nickel corner, at this point, I still think there is competition for starting spots at CB, between likely favorite and incumbent Byron Maxwell, 2nd year Xavien Howard, Tony Lippett, and even rookie 2nd RD pick Cordrea Tankersley.  We haven’t had this kind of depth at CB, well, in a long time.

Defensive tackle should be fun to watch, although we know Ndumakong Suh and Jordan Phillips will be the starters,  the depth will definitely be up for grabs, with newly acquired Lawrence Okoye, and rookie draftees Davon Godchaux (RD5) and Vincent Taylor (RD6), as well as possibly Julius Warmsley, who may be working out at DE.  Will there be a late veteran pickup, or do we go with youngins?

Another aspect that really has me interested is the other safety spot, meaning not Reshad Jones’ spot.  Yes, Jones tweaked sumpin’ the other day, but I’m thinking he’ll be fine, but what of Nate Allen and suspended for 8 games T.J. McDonald?  Do we get any competition there, knowing McDonald must miss the first 8 games?  If not, can Nate Allen return to the promise he showed early in his career with Philadelphia?

Many questions, and of course, will OC Mike Pouncey be healthy enough to participate in TC, and if so, does he make it through healthy enough to play this season?  Does Devante Parker finally emerge as a premier receiver?  Does star Jarvis Landry sign a big contract before the season? Does RB Kenyan Drake really share carries with Jay Ajayi, or is he just going to spell him?  Is Ryan Tannehill really 100%, and if so, does he ascend to the upper echelon of QB’s, surrounded by significant talent this season on offense, easily our best offensive roster in quite some time.  Does Julius Thomas make us forget about Jordan Cameron and Dion Sims, and maybe become Randy McMichael or Keith Jackson or better for us?

Some of these questions will be answered in training camp, others will continue through the preseason and possibly even the beginning of the season, while others will finally be answered by seasons end.  Looking forward to it all!

Go DOLPHINS!!  Zero in!

ESPN has a story about Ajayi’s being left behind for the Seattle game being the catalyst for his breakout season. The story is the epitome of a writer putting words into Ajayi’s mouth, and it happens all the time. Big difference between him just coming out and saying it vs being asked

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Close to the same, Gase likes uppers, because they don’t go to the ground as much, where most practice injuries occur.

  18. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Competition is always good, especially in football, because these guys drop like flies, so you better have good depth.

  19. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Joe Schad’s quick takes from what Gase said after practice
    ————————————–
    • Isaiah Ford has a swollen knee. He should know more tonight.

    • Mike Pouncey needs to be held back because he’ll find a way to sneak extra work in. Pouncey is a huge calming influence over the entire offense.

    • The underneath coverage is a lot tighter this season, with Lawrence Timmons and Kiko Alonso on the field at linebacker.

    • Byron Maxwell thinks he’s the best corner in the NFL. Gase loves his ability to work on his weaknesses in practice and desire to be the best. Maxwell was trying to figure out how to fit in last year and adjust to scheme.

    • DeVante Parker is in “phenomenal” shape and understands leverages much better this season.

    • The University of Davie T-Shirts are in part because they operate like a college program. There is a college atmosphere. There is a closeness in the program.

    • Cordrea Tankersley has about 20 people coming at him with water and Gatorade.

      • The underneath coverage is a lot tighter this season, with Lawrence Timmons and Kiko Alonso on the field at linebacker. Worth it’s wait in gold (see both cheats games last year and even the last 32).

      • DeVante Parker is in “phenomenal” shape and understands leverages much better this season. Along with Thomas, if either breaks out our O will be great.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Would be real hard for the btwn the hash tags LB coverage not to improve, but Gase is a straight shooter……and that includes on Parker. He had no problem pointing out what Devante need to improve on….figuring that was his “glad you listened” treat.

Truth is, right now, hype is all it is. We have to see this kid perform at a high level for an entire season, because he hasn’t done that yet. Still, good to see he seems poised to do just that.

Why is that the truth? Your perception of the situation isn’t reality. You think they’re just trying to trick us? I’ll wait and see is different than hype, it’s not hype.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Take a look at game #2 the last offensive play, RT throws a perfect pass to Parker in the end zone, but Parker can’t leap to catch it, so instead of tying the game, its a game ending int. If Parker is healthy he makes that catch, and now he’s healthy. I don’t get your reasoning for calling it hype.

I’m sure we’ll be hearing about Thomas causing havoc soon enough. I do think we’re just testing our base Offense out, and that includes Thomas as a blocker… which is something Thomas has been working on all offseason.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Thomas blocking, Ajayi on catching passes, Landry in redzone, Grant working inside and outside, Timmons outside in pass coverage, Thomas thrilled about slot work…..can almost see a theme about the greatest way to improve a player is improving on where he is not strong.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

It’s simple, if he’s not open don’t throw him the ball, if the D takes him away by double covering him throw it to someone else. Hit the open man whoever it is.

BNNY – You think the Bills can do better than Miami!?! Is that the same Bills that have a new coach (may be the only reason they win more games than last year), the Bills who delayed resigning there QB because they were not sure he is franchise material, the Bills who did not pick up the 5th year option on their #1 WR, the Bills who signed a rookie viewed as a guard to play RT, or the Bills who lost their #1 CB and LB to FA?

Sorry, don’t see it. 6-8 wins at best.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

The schedule is the same except for us playing the Ravens, they get the Bengals, and we play the Titans, they play the Colts, that seems to be a wash, but we get to play them twice while they have to play us twice 😛

If we have to worry about what Buffalo does this year the season will be a mess anyways, so no sense in worrying about them.

Real interesting interview with Carroo. Am sure he had lots else to talk about, but the reporters were focused on his weight. Last year he played at 221, is now at 212 and his goal is to play at 208. That’s a major drop for a wideout. As he explained, “That’s a big factor for me, to continue to lose more and more weight so I can become a more fluid, faster receiver.”

    https://phinphanatic.com/2017/07/30/leonte-carroo-talks-camp-tough-wr-competition/

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Yeah he talked about that in OTAs. I remember Jerry Rice was 205 when he was drafted and then dropped weight and said the best weight for him when he was in his prime was 189 at 6-2.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

You got me to check out Carroo’s combine stats. 6-0 and ran a 4.5 at 211 (wondering if slimmed down for the 40 time). Am guessing he has figured out that he can’t out-height, muscle and athletic NFL dbs like he did with Rutgers. And that being faster and more mobile will create more separation window for him.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

That’s exactly it. Most guys slim down for the combine to be quicker. Dion Sims played at 288 for MSU but was 264 at the combine.

  60. jetsssuck's avatar jetsssuck says:

caroo and jerry rice in the same conversation. Wait till MikeE see’s this, he might understand why we gave up all those draft picks for 1 guy who is going to be in HOF.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

It wasn’t comparing the players. It was commentary on why some WRs prefer to play slimmer than heavier. Who better than Jerry Rice to use as an example of why one would prefer that?

      • jetsssuck's avatar jetsssuck says:

come on you alsdo believe Carroo passes the eyeball test like the dolphins when they gave up all those draft picks for Carroo. He ‘s a sure bet and he meets everyone’s eyeball test for greatness.
It seems like all NFL teams desire a big receiver on their roster and this has been going on for the last 2 decades. Mismatches against smaller db’s maybe?

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I haven’t seen enough of him to declare if he was worth the trade or not. But it’s in the past now and the draft picks given up aren’t a big deal – the extra compensation was really just a 2016 6th and 2017 4th. The 3rds were a wash, basically just swaps in different years. Same #86 picks as well.

The NFL covets tall WRs, not heavy, there’s a difference. Like Parker at 6-3 212. He wouldn’t be as effective at say 230.

No, that’s not what I said. I said it’s not that outlandish to think that they could. It’s not like we are the Patriots. We aren’t locked into 12-14 wins on an annual basis. we could just as easily finish with 8 wins this season as we could 11 IMO.

  64. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Brian, as an optimist I haven’t really put us at anything more than 10-6 if everything goes right the past few years. Well not everything went right last year and we finished 10-6 and made the playoffs. The 2017 team is better. If we don’t have many major (key) injuries, I think we can win the AFC East. I haven’t felt like that in a long time. This is the best roster we’ve had in a long time. It’s not perfect, no team is. But there is plenty of talent on this team to win more games than they lose. How high we go, yet to be determined.

  65. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

i may mortgage my home and take that bet.

  68. dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

The main reasons I think you can see a big jump from the Bills this year:

    A) Trench talent on both sides of the ball can allow them to dictate to opponents.
    B) New coaching regime means the league will have to catch-up to what they’re doing
    C) They have solid young talent on Defense that will only get better as the year goes on

  69. dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

Good to read that Carroo was able to take over practice yesterday. Hopefully he has his confidence and strings together multiple solid practices.

  70. dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

Nice thing w/ training camp 4 practices in, there’s been 1 offensive dominated practice & 1 defensive dominated practiced while the other 2 have been pretty even. Usually we’ve seen the D way ahead and that’s not the case this year. So we now have a truly competitive environment for both sides of squad to grow & thrive in.

  71. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

as for strength of schedule, out of 16 games this year we only play 6 playoff teams and the pats hold two of those spots, after the pats there are only 4 playoff teams from a year ago we play.

Boulder, it doesn’t say it anywhere that I can find. It is a 2018 draft pick and I wasn’t sure if it was a conditional draft pick or a straight up pick and was just wondering out loud if it DOES effect our pick or not.

Dolphins will send the seventh round pick back to JAX due to BA’s retirement

  87. BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

According to mando the phins are now looking for another RB to add to the mix. I think that’s a good move.

  88. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

DAVIE–Former Dolphins left tackle Branden Albert announced his retirement this morning, ending a nine-year career that included three strong seasons with Miami.

The Dolphins traded Albert to the Jaguars shortly after last season as part of an agreement to bring in Julius Thomas. It was broken into two separate deals, with Albert going out in exchange for Jacksonville’s 2018 seventh-round pick. That pick acquisition is negated by his retirement, a source said.

According to the Palm Beach Post we do not get the pick now that BA has retired. Sucks, but it is only a 7th round pick.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

That could be true……and could have been worked into the deal as a condition, but him retiring does not affect our cap at all. He had no guaranteed money left. Left over proration of cap bonus, but we ate that on the trade anyhow.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

If a guy retires with years left on his contract a team can get that money back and have it come off the cap.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

But he had one year left and we were ready to cut him. He had no guaranteed money left. We ate the pro-rated bonus versus the cap at that point. You thinking that now that he retired that we don’t have to any more?

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

They’ve said in the past that when a player retires while he still has a contract the team can go after his pro rated bonus, but I don’t think they will.

  89. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Stanger, according to Over the Cap .com we are carrying $3.4M in dead money for BA.

The retirement doesn’t effect that. I just thought it was odd that the reporter from Jax was saying that Jax could go after BA for that money (which was prorated bonus)

    https://overthecap.com/salary-cap/miami-dolphins

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Right — whatever it is, we were eating it on the trade anyhow. Now if there is some kinda of Ricky Williams thing that lets the Jags inherit some right with the contract to get signing money back…..just don’t know for sure. Guessing it was just a reporter trying to be the first to tweet though.

  90. pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

Like a couple of others, I don’t put much weight on strength of schedule. It’s a circular argument. Every year some teams regress while others progress. Miami

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Right? Everyone is 0-0 right now. Many teams played better last year than the year before and many didn’t play as well as the year before. Injuries, etc will take their toll.

The narrative is that the dolphins beat a bunch of shitty teams last year. Well, when the season started many of those “shitty teams” were “supposed” to be good. Many went on losing streaks after the Dolphins beat them which further lowered their “strength”. Heck, I think we put 3 QB’s on the bench for the week following the week they played us.
