Dress Rehearsal Thursday, time for Dolphins to look sharp

636385963046502459-USATSI-10224607

OK, so here we are, the most important game of the 2017 season to date.  Some, not all of the starters will be playing not only the entire 1st half of this game, but some will play into the 3rd quarter as well.  Game 3 of the preseason is the so called Dress Rehearsal, and this will give the coaches a much better idea how the starters look, and where the team is at.

This game will not include heavy duty strategizing, at least not as far as the game plan is concerned.  Neither team is going to show their true personalities, and will follow a basic vanilla gameplan.  It’s all about execution.  Who’s doing things right, who isn’t, and most likely, guys that aren’t doing it right will be executed.  Well, not really, but they might be cut with a poor showing.

QB Jay Cutler had an excellent practice yesterday with the Eagles, and hopefully, set the tone for tomorrow’s game.  It would be nice to see Cutler excel tomorrow, I think that could really boost not only his confidence, but also his teammates.  For Cutler to look good, he’s going to need help from that shaky O-line.  I believe OG/C Kraig Urbik is injured and out for tomorrow’s game, so that means OT/OG Jesse Davis will probably play LG, and Jake Brendel will probably play C, with Jermon Bushrod playing RG, and of course, the bookends will be LT Laremy Tunsil and RT Ja’Wuan James.  We need this unit to look solid, to protect Cutler, and to give the RB’s running lanes.

On the defensive side, it’s a whole different story.  We so desperately need for everyone to stay healthy.  Newly acquired MLB Rey Maualuga will not be playing, but the Dolphins would really like to see some guys step up.  The CB battle should be fierce, even with the season ending injury to CB Tony Lippett, we still have good talent there.  Maxwell, Howard, Verner, Tankersley, McCain, Pitts, Aikens and Thomas give the Dolphins pretty good depth.

At LB, will Mike Hull be able to make the right calls, and even more importantly, not get washed out and make tackles?  I’m not worried about Timmons and Alonso, but it would be nice for Hull to be stout against the run, even though we now have Maulauga.  I’d also love to Godchaux continue to impress, and push Jordan Phillips back into the rotation.  Phillips looks hungry all the time, but is he hungry to keep his starting spot?  We’ll see tomorrow.  I like what we have on the D-line, with our additions of DE William Hayes, and of course Charles Harris.  I think Harris will just keep getting better and better as the year goes on, as they limit his snaps early on, and then slowly increase his workload.  He’s mostly going to be a pass rush specialist this season, and with the current depth, that’s perfect.

I want to see the run game clicking, I want see Cutler upright and throwing accurate passes for scores, and I want to see this defense look tough.  Our defense last year was kind, I want to see some mean.  Don’t give opposing RB’s second chances, and sometimes 3rd chances, make the tackle!  I want God-show to be all up in the backfield of the Eagles, disrupting everything.  I want Hull stopping RB’s dead!  I want Howard, Maxwell and All-Terrain shutting things down.  Hey, it’s only preseason, but like a crystal ball, it’ll show you some things to come.  I think we’ll have a better idea of what our team really is, and I hope for all of our sakes, it’s not like the oddsmakers say, that we’re a 7 win team.

GO DOLPHINS!  Stay healthy!

It’s hard to run forward at someone and tackle them back.
    Reply

No doubt, but don’t help them with your momentum. I know it was a “in the moment” thing where you don’t think you just tackle, but if our guys had him arm tackled or was standing him up FUCK INTERCEPTION

  2. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Moore should have made that tackle!

  3. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

    Thomas looks slow

  4. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

    two int’s and a fumble

  5. Ken's avatar Ken says:

Alright I have seen what I needed to see let’s keep Cutler healthy and pray we find some run D and we can compete

  6. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

    Nice run play by Drake

  7. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

That’s a really cool play for Drake getting him in space like that

  8. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

It’s great to see Drake so involved

  9. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Drake is looking good, we have three good RB’s.

  10. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Drake is running against the Eagles’ #2s. Let’s not go overboard, here.

  11. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

Drake is a stud regardless of who he’s running against

Andre Branch is going to be a STUD this year.

  13. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

They totally read that plead and could not stop it

Moore is not so good tonight.

  22. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Wake did some “acting” on that play. He was definitely held, but he threw his arm up and arched to bring attention to it. Like he was throwing his arm out to keep his balance. The flag wasn’t coming out until then IMO (or the ref could have just been slow fumbling it out of his belt but the flag was late on that hold)

  23. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    I just Frankjackulated

  24. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Our first team Defense has me concerned. Way too many soft spots. Played a good down, gave up a big play, had a good down, gave up a TD

  25. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

man is it me or is this a long as half time?

  26. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

    Offense

Our O-Line is going to be our Achilles heel. Cutler is going to work out for us this year and hopefully our O-Line stays healthy enough to spring Ajayi as it did last year. NO MORE INJURIES!

    Defense

We’re going to miss the 3-down ability of young Raekwon McMillan. If Maulauga can stop the run as advertised, we’ll be good in those sits. Seems we either need to knock more rust of on the D, and/or Matt Burke’s Defense needs to get accustomed to. NO MORE INJURIES!

    • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

When ISN’T the OL our Achilles heel?!!! Burke’s D is very similar to Vance Joseph’s. I think that we are just seeing more of the same as last year from this D.

why does your mustard bottle have weird peanut eyes?

  28. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

Cutler has the best arm Miami has seen in a while, we have to protect him though

  29. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

I think the 2nd pick was more moores fault as well, thomas was covered like a blanket on that play. why would he throw there?

  30. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

    Prof Lou,

You don’t seem to understand that we only have approximately $3-4M in cap space. We’d have to trade a $$$ player (not just an early Draft pick) to accommodate a premiere player.

I’ve seen him make a few good hits this preseason. The book on him was he didn’t like to tackle/ glad he’s proving the draft analysts wrong thus far.

  62. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

When we picked up Doughty I was really pulling for the local kid, but he’s just not that good at all.

  63. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

“Tankersley is a highway speed guy. If you draw up a corner, this is the guy. He can run fast. He’s a press corner. He’s the least interesting defensive back in this entire draft in supporting the run. He was directly for support on two Dalvin Cook touchdowns and did not get involved at all.” — Mike Mayock

  74. Gee,
Was that Mike Tannenbaum in the booth last night talking about player for player trades? Yeah, it was. But, I don’t know what the fuck I’m talking about.

    • jetsssuck's avatar jetsssuck says:

any idea what players they may target or did he mention positions he is looking into. This is usually the time of training camp where trades are taking place but this year may be different with only 1 cut down day.

  75. olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

MANY THINGS to like and NOT to like about last night’s Fins performance. The TWO JAYS looked ready. The O-Line had a couple of glaring breakdowns, but also seemed to run block pretty well. But giving up 28 points in the first half is NOT good by any standard. Defense has NOT been “fixed” yet, despite so many draft choices. Also, wideouts looked in mid season form.

Finally got my parking passes delivered late yesterday. AS OF NOW, ticket department REFUSES to refund me the passes for the 2 exhibition games THAT I NEVER RECEIVED!! nor WILL THEY GIVE ME CREDIT TO NEXT YEAR’S SEASON TIX!!! I’m going to turn this whole mess over to my credit card company and let them handle it.

Last night’s beanball wars between Tigers & Yankees proves, once again, that DH MUST GO!!–These A.L. pitchers think they can throw at other players with impunity because they DON’T HAVE TO COME UP TO BAT!! Randy Johnson & Pedro Martinez hit about 60 per cent fewer batters in the National League than they did per at bat in the American League!! Yankee pitcher who beaned Tiger player should be banned without pay for the rest of the season!! Joe Girardi, hopefully, is looking at at least a 1 month suspension without pay! Tiger players also should draw fines/suspensions.

TIME for Manfred to step-up before someone gets killed!!

i know who they are.u are correct they are a national powerhouse yr in and yr out like st.thomas, john bosco(california) I think st thomas has the most nfl players that played in NFL. Brian piccollo (brian ‘s song) played at st.Thomas along with hundreds of nfl players. Jason Taylor is a asst coach this yr also. Chris everit(sic) went there also. They play the brian’s song after every home game also.
I live out in western broward and there is American Hertitage HS which is coached by Pat surtain and they are always in the top 15 nationally. Most NFL present players and former send their kids to these two schools and thats why they are always nationally ranked.

    Mike,
At least our favorite NFL team hasn’t been besieged with injuries, and our favorite NBA team isn’t an absolute train wreck…

  79. BailBondMike's avatar BailBondMike says:

Starting secondary worried me the most last night. Rashad looked rusty as hell. The only time I saw him was when there was a miss communication resulting in blown coverage or he was missing a tackle.

  80. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I haven’t seen the game, but I’m not worried about Reshad at all. He’s a pro bowler, he’ll get back up to speed quick enough. I’m also sure he isn’t trying to kill himself in the pre season, he’d probably like to make it through 16 games or more this season. Who started at CB last night?

  81. BailBondMike's avatar BailBondMike says:

Cutler looked good but can tell his timing is still a bit off with WR’s (the long throw to Stills and the one to Landry that was short). That should work itself out. The pass to Parker was sweet. Pocket presence is spot on. Julius Thomas looks slow and lazy into his routes or is that just me?

  82. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Has Miami ever had a QB with an arm stronger than Cutler’s? Think it btwn him and Dan the man.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I think we had one of those big armed QB’s either in the 90’s or 2000’s, not someone we drafted, but someone who was here for a very short time. Can’t think of the name.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Not him, but put Culpepper in that group

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

You’ll see what I mean when you watch the game. And not even talking the deep throws you might have seen in the highlights. He doesn’t even have to step into the throw to fire a 15 yard bullet.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

More than his arm strength he has that Marino like mentality of wanting to push that ball down field

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Yep — And doesn’t that match up with fast receivers who don’t necessarily have to be big. They have to earn a true comparison to Duper and Clayton, but am guessing we see some sets with Stills and Grant. That might make some DBs a bit edgy.

  83. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

  85. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Does anyone remember the QB I’m talking about? I think it was the 90’s or 2000’s, he was a big stiff, but guy had a cannon for an arm. I don’t believe he ever started for us in a regular game.

  86. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

  87. Randy's avatar Randy says:

M13 can take a backseat on pimping King. I have been talking about him for 2 years! Lol

  88. drg's avatar drg says:

I missed all of Cutler’s snaps and started watching just as Moore threw that awful fade route INT. It wasn’t encouraging watching our first string D get roasted by Philly’s 2nd team offense. Our defense was the major problem last year and it appears that may continue. Even with the injuries, there is enough talent to be an average to above average defense. Whether it’s scheme, effort, or just overrated players, they had better find a way this season.

  89. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

My take on preseason so far: the game we won we were trailing when the starters stooped playing, but the games we lost we were leading when the starters left. I think Gase has coached to limit the injuries and it’s showing on the scoreboard. I like that we can compete in a shootout.

  90. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    drg,
I was having some of those same thoughts about our defense. What is the problem? We have decent talent, but something is just not clicking for us. I think our LBers are still a concern, and our secondary is still a question mark too. Even with that though, we just don’t seem to be performing at the level we need to be with the guys we have. We’d better figure it out quick.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

The LBs play too close to the LOS to stop the run and blitz, so they do get pressure sometimes, but when they don’t it leaves a hole in the middle of the D.

  91. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

    Scott Mitchell?

  92. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

It was a fun game. Saw lots of good things and some not so good things that need to be cleaned up especially on defense. But I think we’re gonna score a good amount of points this year.

  93. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

Cutler looks great but we need to protect him

  94. BailBondMike's avatar BailBondMike says:

David Woodley? He had a strong arm, just wasn’t that good of QB.

  95. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Ajayi looked like the same guy as last year which was encouraging. He could have a huge season. I really like Gase’s commitment to running the ball.

  96. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Tim

I think he did, which led people to call him Drunkenmiller

  97. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

We had issues early on D, cleaned some things up, then the dam broke. We should’ve been up 28-14, but Parker thought the game was over when Cutler went out.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I think both teams also were just playing straight up vanilla defense to get the physical work in that they don’t get much of a chance to do in practice.

  98. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

When we give up a 1st down, the D seems to suck the rest of the drive.

  99. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I was getting frustrated with the D last night too. They would stop the run for a loss or no gain and then give up 15 yd run. Stop the run, give up 12 run, stop the run, give up 10, 11, 12, TD!

They need to get way more consistent. (consistently good that is)

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Work to do on the D for sure, but lots of bodies flying around at least and good minds to figure out how to get them flying in the right directions.

  100. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I really like what I see from Timmons. He gives us a dynamic at LB we didn’t have last year.
