Dress Rehearsal Thursday, time for Dolphins to look sharp

636385963046502459-USATSI-10224607

OK, so here we are, the most important game of the 2017 season to date.  Some, not all of the starters will be playing not only the entire 1st half of this game, but some will play into the 3rd quarter as well.  Game 3 of the preseason is the so called Dress Rehearsal, and this will give the coaches a much better idea how the starters look, and where the team is at.

This game will not include heavy duty strategizing, at least not as far as the game plan is concerned.  Neither team is going to show their true personalities, and will follow a basic vanilla gameplan.  It’s all about execution.  Who’s doing things right, who isn’t, and most likely, guys that aren’t doing it right will be executed.  Well, not really, but they might be cut with a poor showing.

QB Jay Cutler had an excellent practice yesterday with the Eagles, and hopefully, set the tone for tomorrow’s game.  It would be nice to see Cutler excel tomorrow, I think that could really boost not only his confidence, but also his teammates.  For Cutler to look good, he’s going to need help from that shaky O-line.  I believe OG/C Kraig Urbik is injured and out for tomorrow’s game, so that means OT/OG Jesse Davis will probably play LG, and Jake Brendel will probably play C, with Jermon Bushrod playing RG, and of course, the bookends will be LT Laremy Tunsil and RT Ja’Wuan James.  We need this unit to look solid, to protect Cutler, and to give the RB’s running lanes.

On the defensive side, it’s a whole different story.  We so desperately need for everyone to stay healthy.  Newly acquired MLB Rey Maualuga will not be playing, but the Dolphins would really like to see some guys step up.  The CB battle should be fierce, even with the season ending injury to CB Tony Lippett, we still have good talent there.  Maxwell, Howard, Verner, Tankersley, McCain, Pitts, Aikens and Thomas give the Dolphins pretty good depth.

At LB, will Mike Hull be able to make the right calls, and even more importantly, not get washed out and make tackles?  I’m not worried about Timmons and Alonso, but it would be nice for Hull to be stout against the run, even though we now have Maulauga.  I’d also love to Godchaux continue to impress, and push Jordan Phillips back into the rotation.  Phillips looks hungry all the time, but is he hungry to keep his starting spot?  We’ll see tomorrow.  I like what we have on the D-line, with our additions of DE William Hayes, and of course Charles Harris.  I think Harris will just keep getting better and better as the year goes on, as they limit his snaps early on, and then slowly increase his workload.  He’s mostly going to be a pass rush specialist this season, and with the current depth, that’s perfect.

I want to see the run game clicking, I want see Cutler upright and throwing accurate passes for scores, and I want to see this defense look tough.  Our defense last year was kind, I want to see some mean.  Don’t give opposing RB’s second chances, and sometimes 3rd chances, make the tackle!  I want God-show to be all up in the backfield of the Eagles, disrupting everything.  I want Hull stopping RB’s dead!  I want Howard, Maxwell and All-Terrain shutting things down.  Hey, it’s only preseason, but like a crystal ball, it’ll show you some things to come.  I think we’ll have a better idea of what our team really is, and I hope for all of our sakes, it’s not like the oddsmakers say, that we’re a 7 win team.

GO DOLPHINS!  Stay healthy!

I thought Godchaux struggled to move guards in college, and I’m seeing the same thing now. He prefers to go around blockers instead of collapsing the pocket. Phillips is way better at the point of attack. I sure hope he gets his shit together and has a strong year.

Didn’t Moore look like shit last preseason too? He performed well when called upon in the regular season.

  6. drg's avatar drg says:

    Randy,

I couldn’t believe how poorly we defended the run last season. Little push from the interior. Our ends don’t set an edge consistently. Our LBs get occupied far too easily and don’t seem to be too intuitive or maybe they aren’t watching enough film. I think we missed Jones tackling and fire last year. It seems like most of our guys struggle to get separation from blocks. Our secondary doesn’t cover especially well and they aren’t great tacklers. I guess it’s everything?

The Pitt and Baltimore games were a complete joke. Their RBs were able to stand around in the backfield or even past the line with no worry of anyone beating their man. They just took their time and picks a nice line.

Seems like the Wide 9 scheme doesn’t suit our personnel well? We pay Suh to be an elite difference maker on defense, yet his entire career he has been on some horrible run defenses.

I’d say coaching has got to be the biggest factor, because the talent is there for us to at least be an average defensive team. On the bright side, teams can turn around a defense really quick with a good DC/scheme and a good draft. Hopefully this draft class can develop/heal for next season and beyond.

It’s funny how you have the naacp and others marching in NY susan saranden in support of Kaepernick and then you have the other side of Veteran supporters whom are against Kaepernick and what they both have in common is vowing to discontinue watching the NFL.
Either way the NFL loses, as for myself, i will always stand to the pledge of allegiance and will continue watching football.

He starts off notoriously bad every year it seems. He did with the Eagles and he did it with us last year. Then he plays a stretch of games like an elite player. I remember Earl Thomas said about him that it’s hard to get him to take practice seriously but he will ball in games that mean something.

I think Prof Lou is a very good dude and his football chops are equally as good. That stated, I’m not sure what happened that made him so angry. I realize we all like to have our football opinions validated from time to time… but perhaps he felt he was getting ZERO respect, I dunno. Hopefully he reconsiders and he’s welcomed back with kindness.

If it’s about me, I simply feel he isn’t thinking the trade element through as it pertains to our nearly non-existent cap space. To get a player of any kind of value, we’d have to trade a player of some kind of value to create enough space to afford him.

If he’s looking for the solution (I believe he always is), he should name some names instead of being so nebulous. He’d INSTANTLY capture my attention if he were to name BROCK COYLE. Coyle would be both affordable and viable between Kiko and Timmons. But alas, we already signed Rey Maualuga… and this assumes he’s even talking about the MIKE to begin with.

Prof Lou, if ya read this, come back! We can’t read your mind, Brother. What’s more, we can’t all agree with one another all the time and nobody can be right all the time. It’s all gravy, man.

He now has 49 homers. He needs 13 more over the next 36 games to top 61!! I have never seen anything like this in over 50 years of watching major league baseball

Jason taylor and sam madison are asst. position coaches for St.Thomas this yr. So far their defense has given up 3 points in 2 games against top ranked national powerhouses.. .

Julio is completely different than Edelman. Jones is more of a Parker kind of WR.

YouTube has the replay of the game, I’m at the play where Ajayi scores his 2nd TD, to make it 14-7. I don’t remember ever seeing a QB in shotgun take 2 steps forward to hand the ball off before. Designed or Cutler adlib to get Ajayi to the goal line quicker?

I don’t mean to brag when I say this, but we have the VERY BEST 3-WR corps in the NFL.

DeVante: Alpha-1, Elastic Man, the man of leap, speedster, Julio Jones Part Deux
Kenny: Beta-1, speedster, YAC nightmare, deep-threat menace, top decapitator
Jarvis: Gamma-1, Swiss Army Knife, “Eye of the Tiger”, relentless, driven, Heart & Soul

Jay Cutler has NEVER had this much talent, diversity, and skill to throw to in his career. DCs are going to be staying up very late at night to figure us out… and then ya have Ajayi to account for.

I REALLY don’t want to get into a Cutler vs Tannehill discussion (it’s not warranted being Cutler is on a 1-year loan), but I think Cutler is going to ROCK this year.

I see the Tannehill haters already LOVING Cutler, and I see the Tannehill lovers already HATING Cutler. It’s as though very few fans can appreciate our situation without loving or hating. Our fanbase is among the most fickle in the NFL.

Do you believe in DeVante? He’s arriving on time, despite his first two seasons being marred by injury (screw in his foot) and hydration issues. He’s going to be NICE this year!

I’m wondering about the lady that decided to stay, who said she was afraid to leave because of looting. Very dumb lady…She is a manager for a restaurant on a pier. She mentioned the pier can withstand 120 mph winds and she felt safe… The weather reporter that was interviewing her didn’t tell her that the 120 reported winds were steady sustained winds. The winds can increase way past the sustained winds. Been looking all day for the lady on the pier and no infomation. There was a ferris wheel in background about a mile from the fishishg pier….

  89. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Cheats only dropped 8 spots, from the end of rd2, to acquire Ealy, so no big deal compwise, but the knuckleheads in the media were praising this move as another great Belicheat move enroute to them winning the offseason.

  90. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

DeVante’s production (even while battling injury and hydration, and in terms of GAMES STARTED) vs 2x Pro-Bowler Amari Cooper (same Draft class)? DeVante WINS, EASY-PEEZY.

  92. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Parker can become one of those top WRs that teams have to game plan for and still not stop him due to his size, speed, vertical and range. He also has great hands, rarely drops a pass. He’s the total package and primed for a breakout year.

My starting 3 WRs heading into the season in FF are J. Jones, Beckham and Parker. I replaced Edelman with a guy who fell under the radar in our draft but really came on last year for the Vikes and got a nice new contract in Adam Thielen. He’s a 6-2 200 slot WR. Also had the same bye week as Edelman so it was an easy transaction. I also have Randall Cobb and TE Jack Doyle so I feel like I’m pretty stacked at WR.

Passive-aggressively posting a mean ‘ol tweet is the kind of thing a bratty, teenage girl would do. The only people who would give two shits about that tweet are the 20-30 people that blog here, so what are you really trying to accomplish? Either move on to bigger and better blogs, or stay on the board and go on the attack if you feel the need. Don’t write “The blog has herpes” on the bathroom stall, SMH.
