Play to stay

For many players still currently on the 2017 Miami Dolphins Roster, this final preseason game, and how they play in it, will determine if they remain on the roster, or are removed from it.  Some bubble players may have already done enough to stay, but others have to fight tooth and nail, and try to show something extraordinary in their last opportunity, preseason Game #4.

Some of the decision comes to down to how many players can they carry at any certain position.  Do we go with 5 or 6 WR’s?  How many OL do we carry, 8 or 9?We’ll probably have 4 RB’s, but are those 4 RB’s currently on the roster now, or do we pick one up?  Do we take 6 CB’s or 7?  I wrote a list, and man, it gets tough.  I figure we only bring 2 QB’s, we did that the last couple of years, so figure we do that again.  I can see us carrying 6 WR’s if they fear Stringfellow would get poached, but I’m not even sure they’re enamored with him enough to feel that way.  I would like to keep him though.

On defense, we know who the likely starters on the D-line are, and I say likely only because there’s still some doubt as to whether it’s God-show or Jordan Phillips. The guys behind the starters are muddled.  We know William Hayes and the loser of the 2nd DT spot are in, but then there’s Okoye, Williams, Fede, and you know Charles Harris is in, but the depth at DT and DE are somewhat up in the air.

baelish-slash

So who gets cut next?

Also remember, we have 2 players who are eligible to come back after week 8, OG Ted Larsen (I/R), and S T.J. McDonald (SUSP)  Both can make a positive impact for our team.  Hopefully the O-line is doing well enough that Larsen isn’t so missed, and the same for Nate Allen at S, that T.J. McDonald isn’t desperately needed.  If all is well, both can slowly be integrated back into the team.

Will Matt Darr hold off Matt Haack?   Will God-show hold onto the starting DT spot next to Suh?  Is Jesse Davis for real, and will he start at LG?  Is Maxwell really in danger  of losing his starting job?  Is our 4th RB currently on the roster?  Questions that may or not be answered after  Preseason game #4.  Some of them may have already been determined by the coaches and front office, but while this last game is meaningless to some, it’s life or death (Dolphins roster life) for others.

NFL rules mandate the Dolphins slice their roster from 90 players to 53 by 4 p.m. Saturday.

They got a head-start on the process Friday, when they waived or released at least eight players: punter Matt Darr; defensive linemen Julius Warmsley, Nick Williams and Lawrence Okoye; cornerback Larry Hope; linebacker Junior Sylvestre; offensive lineman Avery Young; and wide receiver Rashad Lawrence.

Hyde put out ten over/under bets for the team out of one of the on-line sports places. He predicts over the 7.5 win total. And based on the two about Culter……seems he is predicting the offense might just be a bit exciting this year.
    ————————————–

Jay Cutler: 23.5 TD passes. Prediction: Over. The fact he likes to attack downfield coupled with receivers who allow him to do that puts me over this.

Jay Cutler: 13.5 interceptions. Prediction: Over. The fact he likes to attack downfield coupled with a career of sketchy decisions puts me over this.

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

If Cutler throws for 30 TDs, I’ll suffer the 15 INTs,
cuz that would mean over 3000 yds as well due to throwing downfield that much.

Could happen cuz he has 2 more deep weapons than Tannehill did in Jakeem and Julius.

  16. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I think Tannenbaum said he and his staff meet with the guys they cut, not Gase. That would make more sense … as if to say, “Coach wanted all of you, but the suits upstairs had to follow the NFL rules.”

That would make Gase’s inspirational enthusiasm seem more sincere.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

They can’t all be suits upstairs, some have to be jr suits

      • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

agreed….I think guys like Hope got the word from an under-assistant jr. intern suit …

but maybe not … something down there in Davie is making guys love to play there, and word must be getting out that they treat people right.

To me that is what is wrong with the Matt Darr cut. I think that sends the wrong message, since I do not recall any reason to bring in stiff competition for that player.

Possibly he was no fun in the locker room or something like that.

I do think Landry’s legal issue is a huge reason he has not been extended, and he knew that all along, which is why he did not hold out or make any noise about it.

I think he showed flashes of immature temper tantrums on the field, and although you may want to overlook that in the heat of a game, it does hint at character.

McTyer looked really good. I think one of the safeties could be cut first if we add an OL or LB. We kept 6 CB and 6 S. I think it was a matter of grades on the talent we had, the fact that Gase has said he wants as many corners as possible, and all the nickel and dime teams play these days. I doubt the DB position ever goes under 10.

Long way from 12 to 9.

6 CB and 4 S is a common secondary for a lot of teams.

I’d bet we see Maualuga on the field on D week 1 or 2. He won’t play a lot, but…

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I don’t think it will be week 1, he’s barely practiced. We could definitely be looking to add another LB and drop a S. Do we really need 6 S even with McDonald out half the season.

Maybe we make a depth for depth trade with a team needing help in the secondary and we want to add another LB.

With McDonald being suspended won’t that open up another roster spot at some point?

  83. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Steve, I was talking about a depth player trade, not starting level DB for LB. Some team might be really light at DB and solid at LB – say they kept 9 DB and 8 LB but they’re still not comfortable with the bottom end of their secondary. I don’t find that to be that outrageous. That said it is more likely that we just scour the waiver wire for OL and LB. It was just another possibility.

  84. Patriots continue to make trades to improve their roster but the Phins aren’t supposed to do it. SMH

  85. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

    Steve, I don’t think you’re understanding a thing I said. LOL

McDonald is on the 53 as of right now. When he goes into suspension mode whenever that starts, we’re at 52.

  86. Raiders cut Shilique Calhoun after just one season. Just never know I guess.

  87. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

When I did the 53 roster breakdown using the official site, McDonald was part of the 12 DB and Larsen was also on the team. Then it changed. Now the roster is at 52. Larsen will open up another spot.

  88. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Okay, we’re at 53. When Larsen gets designated IR we have an open spot. All I wanted to figure out was where we’re at and the site played games with me. LOL

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The site actively changed all day and I think the web guys didn’t put McDonald as suspended and left off and OL. That’s how the difference was made up. My first roster added up to 53 with 9 OL and 12 DB. Now it’s 10 OL and 11 DB. Not uncommon to make a mistake like that live as it happens.

We’ll see if it happens, but ain’t this the most interesting report of the day.

And now there are multiple reports that the Broncos are primed to sign Osweiler, less than 18 months after the Texans had offered Osweiler $72 million over four years in free agency.

    Who’s the fourth back?

    Ajayi
    Drake
    Williams

There is no doubt that we’re building even younger. If it’s close, young guy wins. This team will do everything they can to compete as far as they can go, but I do not think they really believe they’re a championship team yet. I think the youth shows that, but they’re trying to become that. Start with the DL around Suh and Wake, mostly all young and 3 rooks.
