Play to stay

For many players still currently on the 2017 Miami Dolphins Roster, this final preseason game, and how they play in it, will determine if they remain on the roster, or are removed from it.  Some bubble players may have already done enough to stay, but others have to fight tooth and nail, and try to show something extraordinary in their last opportunity, preseason Game #4.

Some of the decision comes to down to how many players can they carry at any certain position.  Do we go with 5 or 6 WR’s?  How many OL do we carry, 8 or 9?We’ll probably have 4 RB’s, but are those 4 RB’s currently on the roster now, or do we pick one up?  Do we take 6 CB’s or 7?  I wrote a list, and man, it gets tough.  I figure we only bring 2 QB’s, we did that the last couple of years, so figure we do that again.  I can see us carrying 6 WR’s if they fear Stringfellow would get poached, but I’m not even sure they’re enamored with him enough to feel that way.  I would like to keep him though.

On defense, we know who the likely starters on the D-line are, and I say likely only because there’s still some doubt as to whether it’s God-show or Jordan Phillips. The guys behind the starters are muddled.  We know William Hayes and the loser of the 2nd DT spot are in, but then there’s Okoye, Williams, Fede, and you know Charles Harris is in, but the depth at DT and DE are somewhat up in the air.

baelish-slash

So who gets cut next?

Also remember, we have 2 players who are eligible to come back after week 8, OG Ted Larsen (I/R), and S T.J. McDonald (SUSP)  Both can make a positive impact for our team.  Hopefully the O-line is doing well enough that Larsen isn’t so missed, and the same for Nate Allen at S, that T.J. McDonald isn’t desperately needed.  If all is well, both can slowly be integrated back into the team.

Will Matt Darr hold off Matt Haack?   Will God-show hold onto the starting DT spot next to Suh?  Is Jesse Davis for real, and will he start at LG?  Is Maxwell really in danger  of losing his starting job?  Is our 4th RB currently on the roster?  Questions that may or not be answered after  Preseason game #4.  Some of them may have already been determined by the coaches and front office, but while this last game is meaningless to some, it’s life or death (Dolphins roster life) for others.

Mark clayton- lives in houston now.wow

In 2003, he entered the Miami Dolphins Ring of Honor, along with fellow “Marks Brother”, Mark Duper on December 15, 2003. On June 20, 2014 it was announced that Clayton would be inducted into the Kentucky Pro Football Hall of Fame.[2]

In 2005, he helped punctuate Marino’s Pro Football Hall of Fame induction speech by running through the crowd and catching one last pass from the legend thrown from the stage.

He is one of only three players in the history of the NFL who has caught a touchdown pass from both Dan Marino and Brett Favre during the NFL regular season. The others are Keith Jackson and Mark Ingram.

He now lives in Houston, Texas.

Finding out facts on the internet isn’t that hard. You have a library in your home now. Think about that.

    • Lol. Because we all know that everything you read on the internet is true

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Missing the point. Not hard to find out what round guys were drafted in. That’s history, not editorial commentary based on opinions.

      • Well, it’s all opinions. Guys go undrafted and you hear all the time when one doesn’t make it “well, that’s why he went undrafted”. Yet, our roster has been loaded with undrafted free agents for years now and when someone makes that comment it’s all done in hindsight because they don’t know any better

      • I think you’re missing the point I was making. My original comment had to do with people making the comment “well, that’s why he went undrafted” when a player doesn’t make it. It has nothing to do with the fact that a person can look up what round a player went in.
I can care less about that. I’m saying that when a person makes that statement they’re saying it like they knew the guy wasn’t going to make it when they hadn’t a clue.
So, the fact that the team has 12 players who were udfa’s, plus other teams as well, kind of puts that argument to rest. A couple years ago we had over 20 at one point.

From what I can tell, Reilly would not be practice squad eligible, as he appeared in 29 games for the jests. I might be wrong though.

  8. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

The Raiders used Shilique Calhoun as a DE last season… I think that was a good idea to see if he could get it done at DE. But those of us who were high on him last year were having FITS trying to figure out if he should be a DE or a LB.

Pick him up and try him as a WILL-backer. He’s eligible for the PS. Low risk, HIGH REWARD.

  9. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Doughty must be really good at being the Scout team QB. It takes a special guy to learn a new offense every week and pretend to be and do the things the new opponent QB would do so our guys can learn his habits and fave plays etc.

Plus you don’t get paid nearly as much, so it takes a guy who is just happy to be a pro player and maybe get a shot in the future. Maybe as he becomes a grown man and grows into his height and is not so skinny anymore he will get a stronger arm.

But i doubt he will ever be a starter in this league.

I don’t see that at all. Calhoun doesn’t have the head problems that Jordan had/has. I DO hear what ya mean though with Calhoun’s “tweener” status. I don’t think he’ll disappoint as a LB/EDGE.

Allow him to clear waivers and pick him up as a PS player… cheap deal. However, I’m willing to bet the Raiders pick him back up… or Pete Carroll swoops on in to get him.

He has a powerful leg, better than Frank’s, his is just straightening out his mental game. ONE of the spaghetti models has Irma going right over Cuba and staying over Cuba from Gitmo to Havana before curving north and hitting the west coast of Florida from Naples up to Tampa Bay. I have NOT seen a single model that takes Irma either to Texas or Louisiana. All the models have Irma curving to the north, then the northeast. The big question is WHEN will the projected curve to a northerly path take place? An early curve takes the storm over the Bahamas and in the general direction of the Carolina coast. A later curve to the north has Irma hitting around the Miami area them up the eastern Florida coastline. A still later curve northward brings Irma up the western coast of Florida. It now seems highly probable that Irma will hit Florida SOMEWHERE, thus necessitating a change in the kickoff date of the Fins/Bucs game. But I’ve seen hurricanes make some truly wild changes in direction at the very last moment. Hurricane Matthew (in 2016) was dead on course for a direct hit on West Palm Beach only to shift at the last moment and, instead, hitting Freeport, Grand Bahama, with triple digit winds, sparing the Palm Beaches!! It DOES HAPPEN!

That was one heck of a game! I watched it to the very end. I thought Rosen looked HORRIBLE through 3 quarters, then finally got in-sync with his receivers. GREAT game!

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I guess since we’re east coast and the trip isn’t as long, it isn’t guaranteed we have a bye after London?

    • olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

KONG: AS IT STANDS right now, Miami will have a bye week the week BEFORE we play at New England. That’s REALLY IMPORTANT. ALSO there’s NO WAY the Bucs game is moved to Monday. There’s a fairly high chance that either Miami will be cleaning up after Irma OR that Tampa Bay will be bracing for Irma. Thursday or Friday are the only options in my view.

  67. olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

JUST REVIEWED the 2 PM advisory on Irma. Basically, it’s same old, same old. HIGH probability that Irma threatens either the greater Miami area Sunday or the Tampa Bay area on Monday. Neither ROSS nor the Glazers can take the chance of playing on Sunday. SO the game likely WILL NOT be played on Sunday and, instead, will be moved to another day. I believe the NFL will move this game to Thursday Night, with the announcement coming Tuesday afternoon or, at the latest, Wednesday morning.

Five recent Draft selections (Days 1 and 2) that set us back…

    1) DE Dion Jordan (R1P3): could have had Ezekiel Ansah or anyone not named Dion Jordan at any position (should have traded DOWN from R1P12 as suggested… HORRIBLE top of the Draft year).
    2) T Johnathan Martin (R2P10): could have had anyone not named Johnathan Martin at any position.
    3) CB Jamar Taylor (R2P22): could have had David Amerson (had we not traded up for Dion Jordan) or Tyrann Mathieu. Or better off, we should have shipped this selection to KC for Branden Albert instead of rolling with Johnelle Martin.
    4) G Billy Turner (R3P3): could have had Gabe Jackson, Spencer Long, Travis Swanson, or Trai Turner.
    5) G Dallas Thomas (R3P15): could have had anybody not named Dallas Thomas at any position.

Point of this exercise? None of these guys are with us today, all but Taylor are either backups or (soon to be) out of the league, we got ZERO return on any of these guys, our Day 1 and Day 2 selections should be starting for us by now, and our O-Line is one more injury away from total chaos.

I realize that the Draft can be a total crap-shoot, but we cannot miss on guys in the first 3 Rounds. We’ve been PATHETIC over the Ireland years, and I’m not trying to heap more dirt on the fool. It’s just a resounding problem that still echoes to this very day.

Between last GM Dennis Hickey and now GM Chris Grier, I think we’re making very good progress.
But dammit… I don’t believe our current O-Line is adequate enough in order to get through a full season with injury bugs lurking. And we can mostly thank Jeff Ireland for that what with his failed Draft picks in our very recent past.

OFFICIAL PREDICTION for 2017: 9-7, Wildcard berth (return to the playoffs).

    Chad Henne was Irelands downfall

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Chad Henne was Bill Parcells’ pick in 2008. Ireland had yet to be given full control as GM.

      • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

regardless, chad henne was the reason miami was a poor football team under ireland.

I remember, Henne checked all parcells requirements having played 4 years of college.

Henne lacked footwork and therefore telegraphed his passes for easy pickings.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

        ^^^ AGREED!

      • olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

KINDA DISAGREE that Henne, by himself, caused Ireland’s downfall. I believe we could have overcome the poor selection of Henne IF IRELAND HAD NOT MADE BAD SELECTION AFTER BAD SELECTION YEAR AFTER YEAR. The cumulative effect of ALL of Ireland’s bad selections is what led to his downfall. Had Ross realized that RETAINING BOTH IRELAND AND SPARANO FOR MANY YEARS (and giving them undeserved pay raises) WAS A MISTAKE, we could have replaced “The Doofus Brigade” years earlier and be in MUCH better shape than we now are. But, instead, Ross kept the “DOOFUS BRIGADE” and approved the selection of Philbin as head coach. There are plenty of people deserving blame during this era. But Henne was hardly the only culprit. Indeed, the most blameworthy individual, by far, in my estimation is the guy who signs the paychecks, the one and only Steve Ross. Hopefully, Ross’s selection of Gase will be the first of many RIGHT DECISIONS!!

When thinking about the injuries that will surely affect the OL, no one seems to be countering that with Larsen coming back. As long as our big three play and play well the OL won’t be an issue, as we know from history when Pouncey, James and Albert all started.

  82. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

The Storm will be too close by Friday, people will have to make preparations we won’t know until Friday morning if it has a chance of hitting us and if it does hit Miami Sunday there is no chance of a Monday night game. realistically the game has to be played Thursday night or not at all.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

      • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

    ——–
Yes, Larsen will be coming back after half the season is already over. Will he be 100%? I don’t have the answer to that, but here’s another thought: he hasn’t had nor will he have had the time to gel with his new Miami teammates on the O-Line (gel-time is HUGE on the O-Line). That’s another reason why Larsen’s injury SUCKS.

What’s more… Larsen really isn’t that great a player to begin with, as his history/play dictates. He was brought in (in part) to be an emergency Center for when Pouncey goes down yet again.

In short, I don’t think Larsen will be a ‘shot in the arm’ when he comes back. JMO

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

He was the starting LG when he went down.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

The point was people were speculating we’d have OL injuries, so why not speculate Larsen being who he was for us before he got hurt? He’s much better than what we have now.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

YES, I agree that Larsen is/was much better than what we have now. But after Steen garners 8 weeks of gel-time with the O-Line (something Larsen won’t be afforded due to injury), I doubt Larsen would be an ‘instant’ upgrade over Steen in week 9.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Which brings us right back to the injury issue, so even if Larsen isn’t any better than Steen for week 9, he’s still better than the current bench. He’d be a good serviceable replacement for another injured OL.

we’ve had 2 starting LGs go down, and he still can’t sniff the field, that would make him at least 4th on the depth chart??.

He STUNK THEN, but managed to find some success because of the overall talent edge Michigan had over most of its foes. And Henne being a graduate of Michigan certainly was an advantage from Ross’s point of view. Too bad.
