The Porcine Oddysey #106: Welcome Jay Cutler…and Gus too!

Jay Cutler

canmaster

Gus the Can

Hey Dolphin faithful… What are you looking at?  I gotta right to be here…

I’m Gus.  “Gus”?  you say…”Who are you”?  I should just say what’s to you?  But you don’t know me so I’m gonna educate you:  All you gotta know is wherever Jay goes, I go!

I’m Gus – the can Jay likes to kick!

Some of you think you got it all figured out (Gus spits on the floor).  You say “Jay Cutler, that pouty brat who acts like he is too cool for football, why did we sign him?”

CutlerBears1

Well let me tell you right now…You don’t know what you are talking about. Me and Jay go way back.  He’s been kicking me since college.

And I’m here to tell you Jay gets a bad rap.

VanderbiltCan

Sure Jay pouts a bit on the sideline but that’s no reason to judge him.

I first met Jay as a freshman when  he was at Vanderbilt.  I was a nerdy can who was nervous to be away from home. Jay was a big time college quarterback.

Candorm

We were roommates.  Jay was always good to me…he let me carry his books for him, pay for his lunch and sometimes I even got to watch the halls to make sure no one was watching when he had a girl in his dorm room.

We were great friends!

Cutler Vandy

In four years Jay threw for over 8600 yards and 59 touchdowns.  Everyone knew he was going to play in the NFL and probably gonna be a first round pick.  He was the biggest thing at Vanderbilt.

Vandy doesn’t put a lot of players in the NFL..but Jay’s talent was too much to ignore.  His arm was a cannon and NFL scouts coveted him.

He was the most popular kid in school!

You think that might go to his head right?  But no, not Jay.

Jay never cared what people said.

He always made time for me.  Whenever Jay had a bad game he would say to me “hey”  and I was like back to him “hey”.  We nodded our heads at each other like cool guys do.  Then he flicked his cigarette on the floor and then he would look at me and…

Kicked cann

Jay was always my Fonzi…

But college would’t last forever.  It was time for Jay to move on to the NFL.

On April 29, 2006, Jay was picked in the first round.  He was the 11th pick overall and the third quarterback taken in that draft after Vince Young and Matt Leinart.

Mile High Staidum cans

Both of those guys are probably giving foot rubs for nickels right now…but Jay would go on to have a good career and I would be with him the whole way!

First stop:  Denver!

Those were great times.  In three years Jay threw for 54 Touchdowns and over 9000 yards.  His final year in Denver was particularly impressive, he threw for over 4500 yards!

But they always say nothing good lasts forever.  The Broncos fired Coach Mike Shanahan after the 2008 season and hired Josh McDaniels who built himself quite a reputation as an offensive guru for the Patriots in 2008.  McDaniels wanted his guy so the Broncos traded Jay to the Bears for Kyle Orton, a 1st rounder and a 3rd rounder.

NFL: Dallas Cowboys at Chicago Bears

The Broncos would go on to draft Tim Tebow in the following draft.  Hah Hah – they deserved him!

Jay kept kicking me in Chicago.  Jay had a pretty good first season with the Bears passing for over 3600 yards and 27 touchdowns.  However, 2009 was his best year in Chicago for some time.

I’m not going to lie – times were tough in Chicago.  There was a lot of can kicking.  But it wasn’t always tough – in 2015 The Bears brought in Adam Gase as their OC and they set a franchise record for offense with over 5500 offensive yards.  That brings us to Miami where, as you all know Adam Gase is the head coach and managed to bring Jay Cutler out of retirement.

So this season look for me I will be at all the Dolphins games.  You can kick me if you want…

Miami will be getting tropical force winds by Saturday at 8pm if this storm stays on track

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

When has a storm ever stayed on track, at some point it has to turn north. There’s a reason year after they say it’s going to hit Miami, then it turns and goes up the coast. Maybe it’s the deep water or something else near the Bermuda Triangle, I don’t know, but there’s something there that causes it.

  8. jetsssuck's avatar jetsssuck says:

I had a old girlfriend named Irma. She was a wind bag too

  9. jetsssuck's avatar jetsssuck says:

tropical force winds expected friday 8pm according to latest Forecast. Next 24 -36 hours Irma has to go through the mountains in the Caribbean islands so anything can happen.

I’m with Steve. I think it turns north and hits futher up the coast. While they have to get people prepared, the media is whipping this into a frenzy over ratings.

    • jetsssuck's avatar jetsssuck says:

The newest satelights that came on-line within 18 months can predict weather 10 days out with new forecasting models but we all know anything can cause the path to change. This is outrageous news coverage scarring people when they know anything can cause the path to change. In 5-10 yrs they should use these predictive models when we have better data from the new sattelights.

      • pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

I know. My brother went to buy a tank of propane over the weekend for tailgating and there was none to found in Jupiter.

I can understand the people of Jupiter being freaked out. They got hit with 3 CAT3 hurricanes within a 6 week period. I had to work 16-20 hour days for 3-4 months without any days off..

Look at the models at the bottom of the page. These are the some of the same models that NOAA uses.

  13. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

The problem is whether it turns or not we won’t know until it is too late, you cant play a game when a hurricane is imminent, people have to get ready or maybe evacuate. the only way this game is played is on Thursday IMO or on Sunday if the hurricane is no longer a threat.

  14. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

that hurricane is now a cat 5! at 175 mph winds!! its the size of florida

  15. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

If i were in miami i would be packing up and heading north

    • jetsssuck's avatar jetsssuck says:

damn-come on it has not even hit the abundant mountains in all the Caribbean islands. 2-3 days of preparations to evacuate is plenty of time. I’ve lived here my whole live and many times the potential of getting hit turns at the last moment or just brushes s.florida and continues up north to the carolina’s area.Probably seen this 5-10 times. I’ve been through 2 major hurricanes and until its 2 days out and a cat 4 or 5 in a imminent path of S.Florida we are not going to go any where.

      • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

It may not hit those Mountains, it is suppose to be north of them, I’ve lived in S FL all my life and went thru Andrew. i’m not saying leave now however if you wait you may end up in a 300 mile traffic jam, no where to go but the turnpike north.

      • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

The hurricane is steered by the upper level high, and it would seem that high is steering it right to florida

      • jetsssuck's avatar jetsssuck says:

Rob the mountains of the Caribbean is unavoidable either PR, DR or the virgin islands. All the islands have mountains that could affect the path or wind speed. 7 days out to panic is not the time to worry just have your plans ready to implement 2-3 days out. There are plenty of roads to get out of town now as opposed to 25 yrs ago. They have not even ordered the keys to evacuate yet and as you know there is only 1 road out.

    • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

not sure where you get 7 days? it is 4 days away, and you may only have 3 days to evacuate, not to mention it has speeded up since yesterday

      • jetsssuck's avatar jetsssuck says:

7 days out rob.Look at the ey7e where the wind speed are measured. Don’t look at the winds 100 miles from the eye.

  16. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

I’ve never seen a hurricane take the path that is projected for this one, straight up the middle of the state, normally they just come flying thru, i was in s fl (cooper city) when Katrina hit it, I believe it was a cat 2 at that time, a lot of down trees.

  17. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

hurricane winds extend 45 miles in each direction, so its a 90 mile swath, fl is only 100 miles wide! you should look at the weather channel, it is well north of hispanola if anything the mountains may disrupt the air flow a little but i dont think the mountains come into play, hell im in north central fl and am considering getting out.

  18. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

i would think miami plays this game in a different stadium, that would suck as we already have a home game in london, that would mean we miss 2 home games

  19. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    MeteOROBologist. lol

    • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

LOL, i’m just freaking out at the power of this storm, it will make Harvey look like a spring shower, if it stays on this path Ross will have to build a new stadium

  20. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

i doubt miami will play another football game this year in miami if this storm stays on its projected path at this level.

  21. jetsssuck's avatar jetsssuck says:

I now see a new dark cloud a a new leaf on the ground. I’m going to have to take cover soon. The grand kids are going to be real scared after I tell them some stories from all you guys. They need to be focused during our hurricane drills for before/after. They have been getting getting slower the last several drills. I’m going to break out the water hoses with spray noozles and simulate driving rain by spraying them.

  22. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

i think i’m going to catch a jet to colorado and catch it on CNN

  23. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

JS you don’t have 7 days to prepare, more like 3

  24. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

everyone’s worried about a stupid football game, this is some real life threatening shit, forget the game, run like hell

    • jetsssuck's avatar jetsssuck says:

we did have another dark cloud show up and several more leafs fall on the ground. I’m thinking about leaving to the kitchen to start cooking. During wilma we had cooked for 7 days in advANCE and watched movie rentals. People were going crazy with no electric and we had all our generators running without any inconvenience of no electric or a/c. Wife got gas from work and she didn’t have to wait in line like the poor saps that waited 2-3 hours. Since Andrew I have prepared for hurricanes every hurricane season and I believe we could withstand a CAT 6 storm but we won’t chance it with a 4 or 5.

      • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

i agree, cat 4 or 5 get out, the only problem is Florida is tough to evacuate, everyone will be heading north, if you wait too late you might as well stay.

at this moment Florida has never seen a storm of this magnitude and they said there’s no doubt that this storm will have an impact on fl

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Lol at impact on Florida! That’s a pretty vague statement. Impact as in people are buying out stores for water and non perishable items? Impact as in Florida will be hit for sure?

      • jetsssuck's avatar jetsssuck says:

there are plenty of new roads to escape North and yes Florida has seen storms this big before. Donna I believe it was that I experienced when I was a kid. Been through 4-5 bad storms and evacted for any.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

steve — it is a real serious storm. Did you check out the latest tracks? All the models put Florida in its crosshairs.

  25. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

I wonder if we would still have home field advantage if we played the game in the hurricane, do you think cutlers strong arm may be an advantage passing in 175 mph winds??

  26. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

I think it is safe to assume at this point that they will not keep the game scheduled for Sunday at the Rock. Might end up it can very well be played when all is said and done, but the forecasts are just too against that.

    • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

playing in Atlanta will be the only way this game is played on Sunday, could be played on Thursday but that’s not looking good either.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

They could keep on the schedule with the knowledge that they can then cancel say Fri and switch to week 11. To move to another city they would have to make the call before that.

      • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

the weather channel said this storm will have an impact on FL, there’s no doubt, playing on sunday should not even be a consideration at this point

  27. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

Are you for real?? can you read and comprehend or are you just playing dumb? The weather conditions of this storm WILL have an impact on fl as per the weather service

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Of course there will at least be some rain, but you don’t even know it’s going to hit Florida yet. If they knew it was they’d be doing mandatory evacuations already.

  28. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

you can’t play a game on Thursday with the threat of a storm of this strength just 48 hrs away IMO, people will die if this storm makes landfall

  29. jetsssuck's avatar jetsssuck says:

I think this hurricane I might stock up and cook chicken hot dogs with day old bread so the kids know what it means to roughing it. Let them take a hot shower with the outside water hose if the sun heats it up. Then they will apprecite taking a hot shower once a week instead of 2-3 times a day like last hurricane. It doesn’t bother me only taking a shower maybe only once a week.

  30. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

I’m worried that this storm will skirt s florida, hit the gulf and come back thru tampa up thru Ocala out thru jax, that would be a worse case scenario for me

  31. jetsssuck's avatar jetsssuck says:

ever hear of holiday park well about 3 miles east of it, south of 14 street about 2 miless by griffin. 28 miles from the east side and beaches

    • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

yes, that’s not a good place to ride out this storm if it stays on the projected path, prepare to leave by Thursday afternoon.

      • jetsssuck's avatar jetsssuck says:

28 miles inland from the beaches and if it come up directly in the middle of south florida then its about 60 miles from card sound road of which is the only road to the keys.So then you can add the miles to the southernest point. I am in the best possible place if its from the east or up the middle from the keys.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

We’ll hear how bad once it hits land in Pueto Rico, then the wind speed and direction should be more clear.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Look at the history of hurricanes near Miami and it will tell you 9 times out of 10 they miss Miami. In 1981 they said it was going to hit for sure, we but our shutters down secured the sliders, then did the same at the grandparents houses, then nothing. This one is different though.

Do you guys think the Cooper City/Pines area is a bad place to ride out the storm

Trying to decide whether to tell my mom and uncle to evacuate – if so any suggestions where they should go?

    • D's avatar D says:

Looks like we have three primary projections on the tracking of Irma and i think it depends heavily on a low pressure system in the northern Atlantic and how much that pulls Irma towards it, and a small from coming across west to east and how much that pushes it back to the east.

Perfect case(for the majority of us), the pressure system in the north pulls it and it has moved fast enough for that front to push it, and then we see it head more north and track into the Carolinas, which i know wont be good for a couple of the guys here who live up that way.

Worst case for all the Floridians here, is it arrives slow enough for that front thats moving through to not have any chance to push it, so it turns right up the alley way and goes right up the peninsula of Florida. This would be very devastating and affect a good number of our buddies here.

Last thing is bad for me, SB7, BBMike, and maybe even some of the Texas guys, which is it skips off the tip of Florida and gets pulled into the Gulf where it almost certainly will get stronger, or at very least maintain its Cat 5 strength all the way to landfall. It then projects to hit Mobile or Pensacola.

Id say at least 70% of the people who post here are in some risk of this storm, so yeah, everyone please buckle down and get the f out before you are forced to stay if it looks like oyur the one getting it. For you guys in Florida, yall need to have your plan ready really soon. If it does get int he Guld at least we will have a few more days to be prepared.

    • D's avatar D says:

Inland, like probably Atlanta would be best, with no way to predict the path fully, you would be better off sending them to wherever you know will be safest no matter the path, i think Atlanta would be the biggest city/closest city that would be pretty safe to send them to.

Everyone has their feelings on Hurricanes. Im probably not as cautious as i should be most of the time, but one this size, if it gets int he gulf, its kinda terrifying. Ill be fleeing to somewhere near Atlanta if it gets in the gulf and keeps its tracking towards Pcola /Mobile. I hope you you are right for yall sake Steve, but id also be prepared to go and have enough time to get out just in case.

  44. D's avatar D says:

Piggy if it keeps to what the majority of models predicts, it would go right up the peninsula, and that would mean no place in south Florida would be safe, id say all the way to Orlando area, and maybe not even there.

I’ve had one hurricane experience in my life and that was plenty-Hugo, which I believe was a Cat 4. I was on vacation in SC at the time. If it were me, I’d leave. The best case is you have a little unexpected road trip if it changes course and your location is spared. Waiting for an evacuation order just puts you in a traffic jam with everyone else who waited. Do you really need or trust your government to make these decisions for you? There’s a thing called personal responsibility. I can’t believe people gamble on this so much. So what if you evacuate and the storm ends up somewhere else. Much better than not evacuating when you should have. Of course you probably won’t feel too bad about that since a good chance you’ll be dead.

They should be fine this far inland which is probably 20-25 miles.Walmarts usually hand out wayer and ice after the storm so keep a open ear for this. They should button down the awnings. take everything that can fly away and have food prepared for a couple of days. Davie cooper city electric comes on very quick in area close to schools so 1 or2 containers orf gas for genaerators should be fine. If it comes uo the middle of state from the keys we are talking it going through about 200 miles to cooper city. How far are you from your Rockledge house?

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

A tank of gas each way. (2 1/2″ hour drive each way) But it will take me a day or more to board up that place and I torqued my shoulder this weekend so even putting up plywood on my residence here in Boynton (palm beach county) is going to be a challenge.

I am hoping for a turn in the projected path! what sucks the most is ALL my tools are up at the other house so I don’t even have my drills or saws to work on buttoning up this place.

If that NOAA model is correct, H. Irma isn’t going to make landfall until it hits Florida. It could miss Cuba, Puerto Rico, etc, altogether, thus, it may not slow down at ALL.

  67. D's avatar D says:

How far inland you are helps for sure, but do you expect a strong cat 5 to immediately slow down to a cat 1 or 2 before it punches inland a good ways? I wouldn’t count on being inland to protect you a ton and certainly isn’t going to protect much from debris damage and flooding from excessive rainfall. Again not telling you guys how to handle your business, but you need to think it through. Know your living structure too. Once a roof is gone, tree through it, whatnot, it’s all downhill from there

  68. D's avatar D says:

I have been through several Hurricanes, as i have lived on the Gulf coast for the majority of my life, but this one doesn’t seem like one to mess with. We still have a ways to go to make a full judgement on it, but it definitely seems like one not to sleep on.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Based on the gas lines saw today….folks in FL are at least a bit worried about it. Did learn something interesting today though. Highway gas stops have extra reserve tanks and FEMA sends in tankers ahead of time to make sure people don’t run out of gas on the highway and block traffic flow. So if they are battling for gas at your local stations…..hitting one on I-95 might be the way to go.

  70. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

    Friends,

I’d like to briefly share my flood story. I was going to ride it out and made preparations to do so, not thinking it was going to be THAT bad. A last second plea by my fam and friends got through to me: “don’t be a TOUGH guy”. As it turns out, I WOULD have been one of the people that were emergency rescued via helicopter, but I listened to the wisdom of my fam and friends.

I lost my house (had to be condemned after the flood) and I lost COUNTLESS valuables… but I at least escaped with my life. Upon returning to my house (after the waters had receded 5 days later), I discovered what I’d missed out upon had I stayed: vermin/snakes (both dead and alive), HUGE SPIDERS that moved on into the second floor (where I was going to ride it out) to avoid the flood, BLACK MOLD and fungus, the smell of death/gas/septic/swamp/mold ALL wrapped into one, the power and water were obviously out, and lastly… I wouldn’t have had enough food and clean water to ride it out (my fridge was on the first floor along with 3 feet of disgusting/toxic water).

Now ADD to this… I did NOT have a hurricane pounding me with wind (flying projectiles, downed trees landing on houses, and the ability to rip my roof off!).

PLEASE heed my warning, good peeps. Y’all do NOT want to ride this sucker out if the worst occurs. The smell of “DEATH” is something you only need experience one time before ya know it’s not worth riding it out… and I know that a few of you have lived through H. Andrew to know what I’m talking about.

Water damage is horrific. I went through it with Sandy. Cleaning the mess and seeing all the destruction. The area down the shore where our family home was looked like it was bombed. Jet skis and boats on top of cars and houses, and some houses gone. There are still empty lots where there were once houses. Don’t mess with mother nature, she has no compassion during a storm.

      • manitobafinfan's avatar manitobafinfan says:

we have yearly flooding here south of us , and it is gross and tragic losses, but Huge spiders and snakes moving to a 2nd floor.. I am guessing Florida will have Gators and shit hitting the streets too.. I don’t often think about the “Nature Effect” of animals and whatnot being relocated during storms..

  71. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I remember during Sandy the crazy lines for gas for days. It’s a creepy feeling that shows you how things can shut down and people can get desperate during times of trouble. People were pulling guns to cut lines, people were stealing from others.

  72. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Rob, it’s unfortunate that if this storm hits land we already know some people are going to die. That’s a creepy feeling thinking that, but it always happens.

Sounds like a great plan. Why not just board up and safeguard as best you can and head out? Worst that happens is that you get some good golf in and you are still safe. Best case is you get some good golf in and then just de-prepare.

JS, not sure if you’re joking but you can’t ride this storm out in a single wide trailer!!!——————
    —————————————————————————————————————————–
the new single wide trailers have hurricane straps connected to the trailer and with cemented foundations connecting the straps to hold them from blowing away. After all, this is a cat 5 which is the lowest. I would be a little worried if it was a major hurricane if it reached a Cat 1.
The kids did better than the last 4 times for our hurricane drills. Another 2-3 tries and I think we can get to our record time. Starting to look like we may have thunderstorm so no need to push the kids trying another time today although this would perfect time to practice facing the elements instead of me spraying them with the hoses..

  81. D's avatar D says:

To answer a question from the other day, Praise Martin-Oguike was not signed to anyone else 53 or PS that i can tell. So it may be that we simply didn’t like him as much as i thought his performance justified. I know he is a smallish guy for what we are looking for at DE and im assuming he didnt really have all the requisite skills at LB, where he might have been a better fit at 6’1 255ish he’s more build like an OLB for a 3-4 scheme, than he is a 4-3 DE or 4-3 OLB.

When i had looked at those guys after we picked them up as UDFA’s i remember thinking Cameron Mavelaux was the guy i thought was most likely to stick, because of his size (6’6 270), and athletic ability. I also read somewhere he was a team captain and was one of those leader type guys we have looked to add in past couple of drafts. Still based upon performance i saw some really good plays out of Praise Martin-Oguike, so i though he had earned it. He also is remarkably close in production (stat wise) as his buddy in the Temple LB corps, Hasaan Reddick. Guess there was just more upside with some of the others.

  82. D's avatar D says:

Rob, you do know that if it turns and goes into the Gulf it will be heading towards Montgomery right? We are like 2 hours south and a little west of Montgomery and the projected path if it goes into the Gulf takes it almost dead on between us and Pcola. Now that is a good ways inland, but if it does head this way, id be shooting for something like Atlanta or Auburn/Columbus area, where im likely to flee to if it does.

  83. D's avatar D says:

Im hoping they just play it ahead of schedule or play it at a neutral site.

I thought he was going be a decent player. Oh well.
    ——————————————–
He just doesn’t seem to have the same dirty, and somewhat cocky, demeanor you need to play in the trenches. I think he has all the ability, but when the ball is snapped others fire off the ball and i think he hesitates. Could be out of fear, it could be lack of confidence, but in that split second that means the most, he doubts himself. There is 0 reason he shouldn’t play much better than he does.
