The Porcine Oddysey #106: Welcome Jay Cutler…and Gus too!

Jay Cutler

canmaster

Gus the Can

Hey Dolphin faithful… What are you looking at?  I gotta right to be here…

I’m Gus.  “Gus”?  you say…”Who are you”?  I should just say what’s to you?  But you don’t know me so I’m gonna educate you:  All you gotta know is wherever Jay goes, I go!

I’m Gus – the can Jay likes to kick!

Some of you think you got it all figured out (Gus spits on the floor).  You say “Jay Cutler, that pouty brat who acts like he is too cool for football, why did we sign him?”

CutlerBears1

Well let me tell you right now…You don’t know what you are talking about. Me and Jay go way back.  He’s been kicking me since college.

And I’m here to tell you Jay gets a bad rap.

VanderbiltCan

Sure Jay pouts a bit on the sideline but that’s no reason to judge him.

I first met Jay as a freshman when  he was at Vanderbilt.  I was a nerdy can who was nervous to be away from home. Jay was a big time college quarterback.

Candorm

We were roommates.  Jay was always good to me…he let me carry his books for him, pay for his lunch and sometimes I even got to watch the halls to make sure no one was watching when he had a girl in his dorm room.

We were great friends!

Cutler Vandy

In four years Jay threw for over 8600 yards and 59 touchdowns.  Everyone knew he was going to play in the NFL and probably gonna be a first round pick.  He was the biggest thing at Vanderbilt.

Vandy doesn’t put a lot of players in the NFL..but Jay’s talent was too much to ignore.  His arm was a cannon and NFL scouts coveted him.

He was the most popular kid in school!

You think that might go to his head right?  But no, not Jay.

Jay never cared what people said.

He always made time for me.  Whenever Jay had a bad game he would say to me “hey”  and I was like back to him “hey”.  We nodded our heads at each other like cool guys do.  Then he flicked his cigarette on the floor and then he would look at me and…

Kicked cann

Jay was always my Fonzi…

But college would’t last forever.  It was time for Jay to move on to the NFL.

On April 29, 2006, Jay was picked in the first round.  He was the 11th pick overall and the third quarterback taken in that draft after Vince Young and Matt Leinart.

Mile High Staidum cans

Both of those guys are probably giving foot rubs for nickels right now…but Jay would go on to have a good career and I would be with him the whole way!

First stop:  Denver!

Those were great times.  In three years Jay threw for 54 Touchdowns and over 9000 yards.  His final year in Denver was particularly impressive, he threw for over 4500 yards!

But they always say nothing good lasts forever.  The Broncos fired Coach Mike Shanahan after the 2008 season and hired Josh McDaniels who built himself quite a reputation as an offensive guru for the Patriots in 2008.  McDaniels wanted his guy so the Broncos traded Jay to the Bears for Kyle Orton, a 1st rounder and a 3rd rounder.

NFL: Dallas Cowboys at Chicago Bears

The Broncos would go on to draft Tim Tebow in the following draft.  Hah Hah – they deserved him!

Jay kept kicking me in Chicago.  Jay had a pretty good first season with the Bears passing for over 3600 yards and 27 touchdowns.  However, 2009 was his best year in Chicago for some time.

I’m not going to lie – times were tough in Chicago.  There was a lot of can kicking.  But it wasn’t always tough – in 2015 The Bears brought in Adam Gase as their OC and they set a franchise record for offense with over 5500 offensive yards.  That brings us to Miami where, as you all know Adam Gase is the head coach and managed to bring Jay Cutler out of retirement.

So this season look for me I will be at all the Dolphins games.  You can kick me if you want…

I wonder if there arent some stipulations in the NFLPA where you have to have your BYE during a certain span of weeks to help players recuperate. If so they might not be able to switch our BYE to week one and have the players forfeit a bye week to get healthy later in the year. I guess we will find out, but i think they should bring the NFLPA into this if they dont want the BYE week messed with.

Having said this, there could be an upside to TB game moved back. TB didn’t play very well on the road in last half of the season last year, and they have some players who are prone to injury so we might get them at a more vulnerable time than Game 1. We too could be banged up, so theres that, but we played better as the year went on, than we did starting out and have somewhat been that way the past few years, so it might be better to get them later.

On top of that, it would mean that we start with Chargers, Jets and New Orleans, which would be starting with 3 of the worst teams from last year, and 3 of the easiest (on paper) that are on our schedule. That might give us a head start on the year, and buy us a few games to hit our stride before hitting the tougher part of our year. It would probably be a lot easier on the psyche of our young team to start 3-0 instead of 3-1 and it taking 3 games to get to a winning record.

Again, not that i want us to have to use our BYE so early, but if we do i guess there is a little bit of a bright side to it.

BAL would work for me, but I would rather have it played later in Miami.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Week 11? I think that sucks. I know D just portrayed the possible positives, but I think we need our BYE week a little later than week 1

      • D's avatar D says:

I havent checked the NFLPA agreement but it might be in there that they cant do that.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I hope so. I guess we’ll see, and truth is, we don’t have a say in it, so whatever the NFL decides to do, we’re at their mercy

Atlanta would be a good place for it, would give them a chance for a little more revenue or if they wanted to they all could donate their proceeds to the Irma relief fund.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

You know about your situation best of all of course, but if you are worried about your windows then time to think about boarding them up. No hurricane shutters? Safest out regardless is just head somewhere else.

My mom has shutters but not me. I think the way my house sits vs the way the wind will blow is optimum for my protection, but I will not be bull-headed or falsely heroic.

I am probably sending Jordan to Atlanta where his new fiance lives. He was just there last weekend selecting a site for their wedding, so he can just go back up there if his boss lets him. He works in hospitals, so they might need him to stay. He lives in Brandon near Tampa. The storm could sweep south of Florida and then turn north and back east as Charley did when it sliced through. That was a vicious little cutter storm.

  11. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

Just popping in to wish all of you in Florida a safe next several days. Harvey was my 3rd Hurricane in Texas… it will be my LAST time thinking “it will be o.k.”. 18 miles SE of Rockport where it made landfall… no power for 6 1/2 days… still cleaning up inside the clinic.
All the flooding in Houston dominated the news (as it deserved)… but Rockport became an afterthought. Our employees gathered a truck load of essentials to take to Rockport … the town is gone. The news likes to show “boats on land” for drama, what they missed were the thousands of lower income families (those without the resources to evacuate or ‘board up’) were pushed into 3rd world living conditions.
I’ve never purchased a generator before, but the predictions of “lingering” by Harvey made me seek one. After several stores, we walked into a Lowe’s just as they unloaded a shipment of 20 generators at $800 a piece. We got one, but the moment wasn’t lost on me to be grateful for being able to do so without worry.
I spent most of this week on the phone with the hundreds of friends, family, and colleagues I have throughout the greater Houston area. Most believed that “it couldn’t get as bad as predicted”… turns out it was worse!
Watching Harvey approach Corpus Christi I too kept saying “they always turn, I’ll wait until the last couple days”. No longer. As long as I have the means to do so, I will prepare in advance and be grateful if we don’t need the preparations.
Best case scenario for Florida seems to be the west coast, taking the “weaker” side of the storm while the worst side is toward the Atlantic. An east coast of Florida route will certainly cause the most destruction to the most people.
    Stay Safe, everyone!!

    • Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

omg… one year not teaching history and I already swap around “west” and “east”. smh. Where’s the edit button. 😦

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Got what you meant, but was just nice of you more than anything to worry about us after what you just went through. And you are right on how this one is different…..storm surge and wind are the big risks, least for right now.

  12. D's avatar D says:

The CBA doesn’t stipulate when a BYE week can be scheduled, though usually they don’t get scheduled by the NFL for any weeks before week 4 i think. Still there is no rule saying they cant be in weeks earlier than that, so if they want to, its within their power to do that.

The only rules that exist for the Bye week in the CBA is that at least 4 consecutive days must be given off during the Bye. Loosely, i would think they might have grounds if the NFL waits until the last minute to tell the teams that the game has been moved in uch a way that the cannot prepare for the next weeks game because they might violate the 4 day rule in the CBA.

For example, if we dont know if the game will be moved until maybe Friday, then we will have practiced every day this week aside from Saturday and Sunday. That means counting Saturday and Sunday, we would also have to give the players Monday and Tuesday off as part of the CBA on Bye weeks, and only have W, Th, F, S to practice, and unless we wanted to blow our only week with 2 padded practices, we would only get in one padded practice and 3 walk through days in preparation, as per regulation on normal week restrictions. So instead of having up to 3 padded practices (using the two in one week thing) and 6 walk through’s we are going to be limited to about half the preparation time we would have normally gotten for a bye week.

I dont know if that would be good enough to get us out of it, or if the NFL would even take the time for that argument to be presented, but ultimately its going to cost us not having that time to recoup, and it definately is going to cost us in not having that extra time to prepare for the Pats.

  13. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Steve

It won’t really disrupt the season and force any schedule changes other than the venue for both teams, and it will allow both teams to keep their BYE week at week 11. To me, that’s fair.

  14. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

One way to look at it too is this team could probably use another week to get prepared for the season. There’s been quite a bit of change due to injuries and roster turnover.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I do not think a bye week is all that crucial. Week 4, 7 or 11. What does it really accomplish? You can’t time your recharge/healing stage. Teams that have byes in week 4, what happens when they’re all banged up by week 11? They still have to play through it.

Playing the game and putting people in harms way is way more troubling and dumb.

Here’s the thing, If we’re a good team we should be able to win in London or at a neutral site. Why do we always have the other team has the edge mentality? Go play ball.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

How much prep can we get if we don’t play? When are we allowed to practice for next week?

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Just more practice, getting up to speed and focus on the next opponent – the Chargers in LA. TB has been the focus for probably a month. It’s not going to happen now. The team is going to go somewhere to practice unless this storm is so catastrophic that sports mean nothing.

  15. pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

They’re not playing in Miami this week. First responders are going to be busy with evacuating people.

  16. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

That’s not true, they had to do the London game, because they were awarded the SB.

They didn’t have to do the London game BECAUSE they were awarded the SB. They had to in order to be eligible to host one. There is some rule about playing a “home” game in London within “x” amount of years before the superbowl. We got screwed because the previous years we have played there fell outside the “x” number of years.

Actually, Steve is right about the London game and SB

“It is yet another opportunity for this franchise to play in front of its many fans that live overseas. Why the Dolphins? A league source said it was directly related to a resolution approved by the league in 2014 that states if a team is awarded the Super Bowl, as the Dolphins have, the league may select that team to play a home game in the United Kingdom once within the five years of being awarded the Super Bowl.”

So: Zeke Elliott still can get a TRO from court. Judge could rule by Friday, and Zeke still could be playing this week.

  32. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

    Alright you fuckos:
The NFL makes a lot of demands on any city that wants to host a Super Bowl.
For instance, any city that bids on hosting the game has to agree to let the league control “100 percent of the revenues from all ticket sales” including “ticket sales in all suites.”
The NFL also demands exclusive, cost-free use of 35,000 parking spaces for the game. Plus, team hotels must agree to televise NFL Network for one year leading up to the Super Bowl.
Now we can add at least one more demand to the list: According to the Sports Business Journal, NFL owners made a vote last week that will require Super Bowl host teams to play a home game in London.

Under the new rule, teams will be required to give up one home game over a five-year period.

What part of this shit don’t you geniuses understand?

    Yeah,Exactly.

A couple of days ago we didn’t know that Miami was going to be hit. (we still don’t know that it will take a direct hit, but it WILL have at least tropical storm strength winds) The City, County and State are anticipating emergency action which will cost them millions in overtime already. It’s not the worst that will happen but it is millions that aren’t in the budget that these municipalities do not have the money to pay. (why there has already been disaster area designations, to free up State & Fed money) They are not going to take on a game too.

ACTUALLY the Bucs’-Fins game COULD have been played either Wed. or Thurs. Night, thereby saving Miami’s crucial week off to prepare for the New England game later this year. But Ross chose to pick THE MOST PROFITABLE OPTION FOR HIM (Playing at home week 11 where attendance should be good) rather than what’s best for the team.

    I’M SHOCKED, I TELL YOU!

    I’m SHOCKED!!!!!

Remember these words when a tired Miami team loses to New England.

C’mon Man….I’ve been dealing with evac’ing people out of the Keys since yesterday. Miami-Dade County first-responders have more important things to do than provide services for a football game. Ross isn’t picking it based on how much money he’s going to make.

Here’s something to ponder—Miami beach and south beach has 3-4 dozen high rise cranes that are not being taken down and the residents are being advised about the cranes falling down. The airport is required to fill any holes made for airport runways within 96 hours of hurricane from 72 hrs with new 10 day satelight capabilities. One instance protects the airpoort runways and the other protects the people. They really must be secure these cranes

    • pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

Are those single wide cranes with hurricane tie downs? They should be fine.

      • jetsssuck's avatar jetsssuck says:

I don’t know, I’m just repeating what the news said about warning residents about the possibilty of what is possible.I guess federal(airport) rules are different from local( high rise cranes). I’ve heard of these cranes collapsing from wind before. Maybe the cranes require a longer period to dis-assemble than 4-5 days? I know the airport runway below the cement runway where they store the jp5 (aviation fuel)

spooky that TB and NE is teams involved when the game was rescheluded to bye week of 1992 This happened in 1992 when we had andrew. Same teams involved but different dates. Both could be major storms which will find out probably tomorrow if Irma is going to hold up through the mountains or even maybe be redirected towards Jamaica. I think DR and Hiati will knock the winds down 30-40 mph and maybe off course to the lower part of cuba which could take another 8-30 MPH off the speeds which has happened in past hurricanes hitting that area of Cuba. Next 24-36 hours should really interesting. Been to/through DR several times and this place has plenty of mountains. The VI has plenty of mountains also.

  81. jetsssuck's avatar jetsssuck says:

Technology is amazing in this day and age. I remember during Andrew we only had 2 day notice that we were going to get hit with hurricane andrew . WE have 40-45 weather sattelights in the world now and we can make predictions from days out now(recently) with predictive probabilities. But these are not always accurate sense 2.5 and 5 % of event happening. The probabilities with the new 10 day sattelight of forecasting is hopefully weighted so its more accurate but then again the NRC is probably be more cautious to justify the expense of this newest satellite.

This thought occurred to me today. The players and coaches live in these areas. They are supposed to focus on playing a game? As much as it sucks football-wise, it makes sense to move the date of the game, rather than play it as scheduled on a neutral site.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

        Agreed.

      • jetsssuck's avatar jetsssuck says:

Playing NE after the non canceled bye week is not really going to hurt the team schemes since it’s NE and we know them very well since we play them 2x a yr. Is NE going to be coming off a bye week before playing us?

  87. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Case in point on why moving to week 11 made sense rather move to a neutral site is new home buyer Kenny Stills. Say his place is getting hit by a Cat 3 or 4 while they play in say Atlanta. Is he worried about the next play or how many feet the river has to go up?

    • BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

I think a houston game and miami game in 92 against the pats were moved also to bye week when there was hurricane danger. This is the NFL standard not sure why people are surprised by this move.

Broward County is taking this storm serious at least. They just announced there will be a mandatory evacuation of both possible zones. The beach strip one was a given, but the 2nd and bigger one includes every place from Federal Highway to the shore…..that’s like everything within a mile and a half of the water.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

      What are the zones Stanger?

Do you think it’s out west? Flamingo/Stirling area?

      • jetsssuck's avatar jetsssuck says:

flamigo and stirling is 20-25 miles inland—you should know this since you lived in this area when growing up.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

There may be smaller areas out west where they order evacuations because flooding is a concern, but the two main general ones are concerned about storm surge. And they already said will be ordering both of them out. Where I live everything East of Federal

I’m not sure I go along with the guys not being able to concentrate on the game because of what the storm may or may not be doing to their homes. Will they be able to concentrate the week after if their home is destroyed this week? At some point, they’re going to have to play football, so they may as well start this week when they’re supposed to. JMO

What mountains? those islands are so small that its not even a bump in the road… The only mountains that affect storms are in Hispaniola and the east end of Cuba. to far north now for that to happen. Only hope is it keeps shifting east.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Go East Young Irma go East! Amazing how just a 50 mile shift in Matthew made a Hurricane into just a big old rainstorm for me.

    • jetsssuck's avatar jetsssuck says:

lots of mountains in the carribean islands. DR has plenty of big mountains. I can’t remember the famous mountain in st thomas st john. moutain top i thinks called. The islands are not small either not like many think. some of these small islands are 40-50 miles wide. Smallest island I ever heard of is a island in indian ocean-diego garcia where you can see both sides of oceans from what I heard you can spit into the wind and some days it will land on other side of island ocean side of island.

So we lose opening the season at home, don’t come home/Miami till October, gotta go to London, lose our bye week to prepare for the Pats and have to play 16 straight games, (to get a 17th straight game/playoff), and potential playoff games 18, 19, 20 straight to the SB!!

And now we host TB on week 11 on a short week that follows a Monday night game at Carolina!!
