NFL Week 1 – MIA vs IRMA

hurricane-irma-noaa-goes-satellite-infrared-rbtop-sept-5-2017

Hurricane Irma has cancelled the Dolphins vs Bucs game originally scheduled for this Sunday.  Obviously the game could not be played in the state of Florida with a lethal hurricane on the way with FLA in it’s path.  Much to my dismay, the NFL couldn’t relocate the game to a neutral stadium this week.

What does this mean for the Dolphins?  Both the Dolphins and the Buccaneers will now have Week 1 as their BYE week, and will then play 16 straight games without a week off, and for Miami, that includes a trip to London October 1st to play the New Orleans Saints at a sold out Wembley Stadium.  To be more clear, what that means for our Dolphins is 3 straight road trips, to Los Angeles to play the Chargers next week, to New Jersey the following week to play the Jets, and then to London to “host” the Saints.  That’s not great, especially knowing you don’t get a break the rest of the way.

So is it all bad for Miami?  Obviously, with most things, there are positives and negatives.  MLB Rey Maualuga gets another week to get into shape and get the defense down.  It’s one less game that injured LG Ted Larsen will miss.  It will give time to any injured Dolphins players to heal up now, and start the season as healthy as possible.

imageproxy

Back to the negatives . . . Safety T.J.McDonald is facing an 8 game suspension, and this just adds another week to his suspension.  McDonald would have been eligible to play week 9, but now will have to wait for week 10.  No matter what any player or coach says now regarding the situation, I can guarantee that they would have preferred to play this week, and keep their BYE week intact.  The season is a long haul, and yes, up until 1989, teams played without a BYE week, BUT, the Dolphins and Bucs will be the ONLY teams NOT getting a BYE week, while every team with get to rest for a week at some point during the season.  Fuck you very much Irma!

download (1)

Back to the positives . . . We have Adam Gase coaching this team, and I believe if anyone can turn this into a minor annoyance, rather than a season changing dilemma,  it would be Gase.

Go Dolphins!  Zero in!  Zero BYES!

To all our Florida friends in harms way, please be smart and get out of harms way.  Board up your houses and make them as safe as you can, but keep yourselves safe.  Your house can be replaced, but you and your family cannot.  Love and best wishes to all of you!

Thanks as always for your well written and well informed articles Mike.

Just one other comment to add – the last time it happened we went 11-5 and won the Division. Not saying history will repeat, but it doesn’t automatically preclude us doing well.

Based on satellite data, Hurricane Irma’s eye is roughly the size of metropolitan Detroit, at about 1,300 square miles (3,400 square km), the Detroit Free Press reported. Hurricane-force winds (at least 74 mph, or 119 km/h) extend 50 miles (80 km) from the center of the storm, and tropical-storm-force winds extend 185 miles (298 km) from the eye, according to the National Hurricane Center. The forecast models that are predicting the path have a error of margin of error as 100 miles either way.

So sorry for missing the draft last night. I’m such an idiot. I love to eat dinner with my family, it’s something I look forward to. My wife was going out last night to celebrate one of her good friend’s birthdays, and my son works in NYC and usually comes home for dinner. I text him, call him around 4PM, and ask him if he’s coming home for dinner. He doesn’t get back to me. He finally gets back to me about 7:45, tells me he was in a company wide meeting, and couldn’t respond, but no, he won’t be home for dinner. I was so hungry, I made myself dinner, and totally forgot about the draft. True story, and ridiculous! 😀

damn, you had all us fans on pins and needles thinking you are making a epic trade for that 1st pick.

And I am sorry for for not being there as well. Should have said so last night, but my board list we set-up through like 70 or so. So was like they were my picks, but still know it must have taken longer….even if was still amazed at how fast the draft was over, And my excuse is not much better then Mike E’s. Was on a long call with my sweet aunt who was freaking out about us in the Irma path, Didn’t have the heart to tell her didn’t have time to take the call.

I would think it should’ve been a standard a long time ago, and I thought they did. I remember riding out several hurricanes in the 60s and 70s and we never had power.

      • jetsssuck's avatar jetsssuck says:

we were without power in south miami after andrew for weeks. We didn’t have power generator like lots of people. When I moved up to broward several days after learning how long the area was going to take to rebuild.Since then I have made yearly purchases s of huriccane things to improve and I now have 8 power generators and other things to make my family as comfortable as possible. The house was built with my supervision and the roof was secured and built to withstand the highest winds. Of course, we have made more improvements to the roof with new standards and ideas for roof standards being introduced evry year. Rome wasn’t built over night so making these small improvements yrly is the way to go.Hurricane season is the time to make them since we are reminded daily of hurricanes on the news.

Anyone else notice that Irma looks like a giant cock and balls? Or more accurately a giant version of a tiny cock an enormous red balls.

Hanging this plywood on my windows is beating my ass doing anything alone sucks if I just had somebody to hand me the fucking screw that I dropped it would be going so much faster

Not to mention that most of my windows are above a tile roof because I live on the second floor and those tiles are hot enough to melt the rubber on my sneakers so the air above them has to be 150 degrees in the direct sun. I’ve had to stop for half-hour breaks 4 times in this is my fifth and I still have three windows and a sliding glass door to do. Fuck you Irma I was supposed to be watching the Dolphins beat Tampa this weekend!!

On the bright side the plywood is pre-measured cut and drilled to install next hurricane and even though it’ll be backbreaking labor to bring them down off an extension ladder or standing on a roof hot enough to melt rubber it will be only a third as hard as putting them up
