NFL Week 1 – MIA vs IRMA

hurricane-irma-noaa-goes-satellite-infrared-rbtop-sept-5-2017

Hurricane Irma has cancelled the Dolphins vs Bucs game originally scheduled for this Sunday.  Obviously the game could not be played in the state of Florida with a lethal hurricane on the way with FLA in it’s path.  Much to my dismay, the NFL couldn’t relocate the game to a neutral stadium this week.

What does this mean for the Dolphins?  Both the Dolphins and the Buccaneers will now have Week 1 as their BYE week, and will then play 16 straight games without a week off, and for Miami, that includes a trip to London October 1st to play the New Orleans Saints at a sold out Wembley Stadium.  To be more clear, what that means for our Dolphins is 3 straight road trips, to Los Angeles to play the Chargers next week, to New Jersey the following week to play the Jets, and then to London to “host” the Saints.  That’s not great, especially knowing you don’t get a break the rest of the way.

So is it all bad for Miami?  Obviously, with most things, there are positives and negatives.  MLB Rey Maualuga gets another week to get into shape and get the defense down.  It’s one less game that injured LG Ted Larsen will miss.  It will give time to any injured Dolphins players to heal up now, and start the season as healthy as possible.

Back to the negatives . . . Safety T.J.McDonald is facing an 8 game suspension, and this just adds another week to his suspension.  McDonald would have been eligible to play week 9, but now will have to wait for week 10.  No matter what any player or coach says now regarding the situation, I can guarantee that they would have preferred to play this week, and keep their BYE week intact.  The season is a long haul, and yes, up until 1989, teams played without a BYE week, BUT, the Dolphins and Bucs will be the ONLY teams NOT getting a BYE week, while every team with get to rest for a week at some point during the season.  Fuck you very much Irma!

download (1)

Back to the positives . . . We have Adam Gase coaching this team, and I believe if anyone can turn this into a minor annoyance, rather than a season changing dilemma,  it would be Gase.

Go Dolphins!  Zero in!  Zero BYES!

To all our Florida friends in harms way, please be smart and get out of harms way.  Board up your houses and make them as safe as you can, but keep yourselves safe.  Your house can be replaced, but you and your family cannot.  Love and best wishes to all of you!

PPD game gives Cutler extra time to get into form… we could start 3-0 (Saints game in England being the toughest of the first three)….

… But that home game vs Titans is looking like the REAL first home game.
I can see 4-2 record before hitting the beastly middle of the season run: Ravens, Raiders, Panthers, Bucs, Pats, Broncs, Pats again. Let’s say Chiefs are for real AND we can still beat a rebuilding Bills team twice in the last 3 weeks (2-1 to finish the season)…

… that’s 6-3 potential outside the 7-game gauntlet…. 6-10 worse case… 9-7 if we win three of the four home games in that stretch. One game behind last season’s record after losing Tanny and the bye… I think I could live with that if we got a wildcard spot.

  2. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

I know I’m probably talking to blog members NOT in Florida right now… as it should be…

Question: does “week one” bye count toward TJ McDonald’s 8 game suspension?

If so, we’d get him back for Raiders game (2nd game of that 7 game stretch).

You have 2 different arguments going on. One is that the game itself was cancelled, the other is why the game was cancelled. Yes, some people said it was so the players can be with their families etc., but the real reason is they didn’t really try hard enough to find another stadium to play in.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Yes, ive said as mucb, the NFL didnt want to deal with this, and I’m sure they feel better about it after the cheats lost last night.

What a bunch if horseshit, so they cancelled the game so the team could take care of hurricane business, and now they’re leaving town, the same as if they were playing a game in another city.

It’s not so hard to understand. The team could deal with hurricane prep instead of game prep this week and once that’s done they can evacuate/leave early for next week. If the game had been moved to another location they would have been at practice this week instead of taking care of their personal lives and being ready to leave. I had expected they would leave town, everyone who can should leave. You’re looking at this as if this one thing is the only thing. It’s not.

I wanted a game this week, was hoping it would be moved to Pittsburgh which was mentioned as an alternate site I understand why they didn’t do it.

fortunately going up the bottom of the center of fla is a good thing as that is mostly everglades, also the structures built that far west are mostly post andrew and were built with strict building codes, going up the eastern coast may be a disaster.

      • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

It is suppose to be 75mph here in Ocala, the only way it could be worse is if it goes out over the gulf and comes back, all the models have it bending west the further north it goes so that may be an unlikely scenario, nobody here is boarded up.

The preparation phase couldn’t have been more smooth for us. The kids got in great practice assembling the needed things for all the prep work and they improved each time. Lots of generators for sale in the next couple of months. The biggest problem buying used generators is stail gas so you can buy generator gas tanks on line for 25 bucks or less and install it. I bet now they were wishing they had just moved the whole NFL season back one week so Pats could have had another week to prepare lol.

Incidentally, they looked really slow, not at all sharp. Thier offense didnt look good and i saw a bunch of times where Brady had a deep route open and didnt take the shot. Im not sure he has much left in that arm.

Their defense looked slow. I mean i know Hunt and Hill are really fast an all that, but NE’s defense just looked clunky.

There was one very clear shot of Solder bear hugging their pass rusher, arms not only on either side of his body but wrapped around him. According to some of the reports i saw they think the Everglades is not a good thing for this storm. They said its basically water, and very warm water at that, and wouldn’t dissipate the storm much at all, if any.

Again, im not telling anyone they are stupid for doing what they feel is right, and im not telling you i know your situation better than you. It seems that from some of the resistance to these statements, some are taking it that way, so again not telling you you are wrong. Im just saying, go if you can, because i think some of you are hoping for the best instead, and you are trying to remain positive about things. Thats your way, my way, at least with this kind of situation is to always treat it as if im a walking murphys law and giving the opportunity for fucked up things to happen, they are going to.

I also look at it like this. In the case that you are right you saved some gas, you didn’t have to try to fight through traffic going out and coming back in, etc. and you throw an i told ya so back at me. The case your wrong, well it probably wont even matter anymore and there will be no person to give an i told ya so back to. Capisce?

WHEN I SUGGESTED that the Bucs @ Fins game COULD have been played Wed. or Thurs. night, PHELON responded “first responders (like Phelon) have more important things to do than provide services for a football game. Ross isn’t picking (the “BYE” week) on how much money he’s going to make.”
    I respectfully totally disagree.
But, first, I agree you guys have more important things to do than service a football game, No one disagrees. But that, in NO WAY, impacted Ross’s, and the NFL’s, decision NOT to move the game out of town (one of the options considered).

Had Ross moved the game to, say, Pittsburgh or Philly, he would have had to REFUND all the tickets sold to the sold out Bucs @ Fins game. Cost to Ross? 64,767 tix times about $200 per ticket on average (when you factor in the $1,000 and up seats on Miami’s side in the lower deck between the 30’s). Total cost of these refunds to Ross:$ 12.9 million. Then there’s the loss of parking revenue for this sold-out game (estimated at 1.2 million by yours’ truly who has paid parking fees for 51 years) and the loss of team jersey/paraphernalia sales $600,000. Next, Food and beverage sales lost if game is moved (another $2.6 million). The estimated total lost revenue to Ross is a staggering $17.3 million!! NOT INCLUDED: Rental of northern stadium; Cost of team airfares, food while in Pittsburgh/Philly; hotel room, bus rentals to the game, security, etc. Add it all up and the bottom line says AT LEAST $22-$25 million cost to Ross to move the game!! –NO WONDER this option was never seriously considered.
    ——-
NOW to playing Wed./Thur. vs. burning up your “bye” week in week #1 of the season.
A few people might NOT have shown up Wed./Thur. out of fear of Irma. But, in my experience, the vast majority of ticket holders WOULD have shown up at Hard Head and either returned home that night (most Fins fans) or driven back to Tampa the next day (some Bucs fans). No ticket sale losses (all tix sold out) and no parking losses (all passes sold out). If an additional 10-20% were no shows to this game, the combined loss in food sales and team paraphernalis sales MAY have cost Ross between $370,000 and $740,000 by playing in mid-week at the “ROCK.” (formula by yours’ truly. If interested, let me know).

Would Gase, his coaches and his players combined pay $370K — $740K to give the Fins an “off week” before the New England game? Hell, SUH, alone, might do exactly THAT!!

But NOT Steve Ross. He believes in “maxing out” each and every financial opportunity, according to his rep who talked to me. That’s why he REFUSED to reimburse me for the loss of my prepaid parking passes to games 1 & 2 this season. NOR would he credit my account for next season’s tix despite the fact that he admitted his ticket department messed-up.

Anyone who will turn on their own season ticket holders will also short change their own players! That’s why I’m 100% sure that Ross chose NOT to play Wed. or Thurs. night. Ditching the “bye” week MIGHT have made him an extra $370K to $740K (or might NOT have). And if his own coaches, players and fans don’t like it, that’s too damn bad! (And Mando reports that Jarvis Landry and other players WERE PISSED OFF when they found out that Ross “burned” the bye week. Little does Ross appreciate that an unexpected Fins win in Foxboro over the Pats would enhance his team’s chances to make the playoffs and HOST a playoff game! But what would you expect from an owner who has never experienced a playoff win??? A home game in the playoffs CERTAINLY would have recouped whatever Ross lost by hosting the game Wed./Thurs night. AND it would have earned him the GOOD WILL of both the ticketholders and the PLAYERS! Hell, even the first responders working this game could appreciate THAT!!

Namely keeping the passes for game 3 for the game that doesn’t take place until November. No need to remake the parking pass—and, in fact—that policy is now in effect. Now all his people have to do is school the parking pass takers into taking one that says “Game 3.” Should be a piece of cake. I’ve made many more recommendations to him. But I won’t bore you with the details. Suffice it to say I’m a lot more broad minded than you might think. And my next suggestion, which deals with a DIFFERENT WAY TO PRINT SEASON TICKETS, has also been approved for next year. The 8 AM advisory is due in 2 minutes. I’m expecting the eye will still be headed in the general direction of Tampa Bay, arriving very late Sunday night or early Monday. Winds SHOULD DROP TO CAT 3 by the time it gets here. That means those places that are 40 miles or more from the eye should experience top winds near 100 MPH—a level that most homes should survive with only minor damage. That’s the truth. Homes inside the eye could be in for about 1-2 hours of 130 MPH with higher gusts. At this point, Florida’s strict housing construction regulations will SAVE LIVES–HUNDREDS OF LIVES, IF NOT MORE!!!

MISSISSIPPI, on the other hand, HAS NO CONSTRUCTION LAWS. POORLY made lean-to’s are LEGAL THERE!! As a conservative guy, I generally believe the less government, the better. But NOT when it comes to home construction!!

      • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

We are not in a mandatory evac zone, but we are close. If there is no tornado, we should be ok. The storm surge where we are is predicted to be less than 2 feet, so that’s nothing. If it would just drift a little more out into the Gulf, I would feel better though.

  50. herdfan's avatar herdfan says:

I hope everyone comes through the storm ok. I do however find it amusing that everyone is suddenly trusting the weather forecasts when we have seen them be wrong so many times. It seems that people now find that they are going to be accurate as long as they are predicted to be out of the direct path.

The thing I learned from my one hurricane experience is they don’t always do what they think they will. Hugo was supposed to make landfall in SC and go up the coast. It didn’t. It came inland and hit Charlotte NC where I had gone after a mandatory evacuation while on vacation south of Myrtle Beach. So be vigilant my friends. No one really knows the path til it happens.

Because I do think we might need another young TE.

  60. D's avatar D says:

Since we probably will need to go DB in the first next year I’d say TE might be at best a second round selection. I don’t see many of the TEs next year being guaranteed 1st rounders. It’s a general thing for the most part, regardless of position. But as the CFB season rolls on, I then tend to focus positions of need. The key positions I’m really focused on for us this year? CB, T/G, and LB. TE, DE, and QB are certainly up there as well.

Gase didn’t give up a bye after the London game for no reason, he knows how important it is for the stretch run. Year after year we’ve had an early bye and faltered down the stretch, I know we haven’t had the talent, but sure would’ve helped then.

WE ARE IN LINE FOR A DIRECT HIT BY IRMA. NOW, some good news. Irma is predicted to have top winds of “only” 115 MPH when she gets here. Most homes should withstand that with only minor damage, we hope. Major damage from Tampa northward may be caused by tornadoes spawned by Irma (which should be very few in number).

Major football games last night were unavailable due to 24/7 coverage of IRMA on all channels. However, Directv should give us all the NFL games today. Of course you have to have a working dish for that!! We most likely will be without power for many days, beginning around midnight.
