Game Wrap Up with the Little Prawn: Week 2

IMG_1742

HERE WE GO!  Week 2 was officially the first week for the Dolphins and Prawny and I really enjoyed opening game.

In Prawny’s case, maybe a little too much…

sickPrawny

Prawny are you okay?  I’m sure everyone will understand if you want to call in sick.

You may have had too a little too much too drink…

No you want to go on?  What a trooper!

IMG_1744

This first half was not so exciting.  Actually it was a little but frustrating.

The Dolphins didn’t stretch the field as some of us thought they would with Jay Cutler at the helm.  Actually there was a ton of dink and dunk.

IMG_1748

I think the most notable positive thing to say about the first half was the Dolphins run defense which did a good job shutting down the run.

Actually the Dolphins held the Chargers to 44 total rushing yards for the game.  One of our better performances in recent years.

Prawny what did you think of the 1st half?

Prawnypukes

Oh my God Prawny!

It wasn’t that bad!  It was just a slow conservative stuff.

Man….what did you eat before the game?

gross…

stills.0_49__dragged_

It picked up in the 2nd half.

Above is Kenny Stills celebrating a 29 yard touchdown early in the 3rd quarter.

Our wide receivers lived up to the expectations and they all contributed in their own way.

Landry caught 13 passes for 78 yards.

But no one was an impressive as Devante Parker who made a spectacular catch

IMG_1747

He finished with 4 catches for 85 yards.  But neither Parker nor Landry could get in the endzone.  Likewise, Jay Ajayi didn’t score a touchdown.

But Ajayi was till impressive.  He ran for 122 yards on 28 carries.

IMG_1743

The Dolphins actually had 336 yards of total offense.  Not horrible but not really as explosive as most of us want.

Thankfully a certain waiver wire acquisition was clutch.

CodyParkey-610x354

Cody Parkey was the hero of the game.

He hit 4 field goals on Sunday including the game winning 54 yard field goal.

Honestly the last few minutes of the game had Dolphins fans more frustrated than the first half.

But the Dolphins won and are now 1-0

Meanwhile the Dolphins next opponent, the jests, got blown out.  Bring on the Jests!

Cornerback Xavien Howard was targeted a league-high 13 times in Week 2 and allowed a league-high 10 receptions for 87 yards, including a key one on San Diego’s final drive that ended with a missed field goal. His overall grade of 46.8 ranked 62nd among all cornerbacks for week two.

While linebacker Mike Hull – forced into a major role – held up in the running game, he allowed all nine passes thrown against him to be caught for 95 yards. The targets, receptions and yards allowed were all the most for any linebacker in coverage for Week 2.

    • Tim Knight says:

Not a lot of yards though and it seemed to fit in with the scheme we were playing of not allowing much over the top but keeping everything in front of us. When a corner allows 10-150 you get concerned. Hull had to play more nickel than probably the coaches would have liked being we only had 4 LBs for the game. This also fits in with Omar’s somewhat contradicting tweet.

I didn’t like Matt Burke’s game plan, but considering his unit held the Chargers to 17 points and 44 yards rushing I can respect it.

These PFF grades kill me. When you’re playing a zone defense, sometimes it’s really hard to know whose responsibility it was when someone gets free. There’s a lot of assumption going on there, which to me makes it completely inaccurate.

Sean Payton has said Stephone Anthony, 25, is “explosive” and “disruptive” but “keys, diagnosis and instincts at times are off.”

    • Tim Knight says:

That was the book on him coming out of college. That’s why I was surprised he went 1st rd. He was rated as a 2nd-3rd rd pick. I guess the Saints don’t have much patience for development.

  11. mf13ss says:

It’s just me… but I would have traded for Brock Coyle instead. JMO

    • Tim Knight says:

Maybe the 49ers don’t want to trade him. It’s takes two teams and he’s never been a starter either. 34 career tackles in 3+ seasons. Maybe it’s time to let this one go. 😉

New Dolphins LB Stephone Anthony was limited past 2 weeks with high ankle sprain. Inactive for Saints both weeks.

  17. D says:

I seriously doubt its anywhere near a third, i think its likely a conditional 6th at tops, i wouldnt be surprised if its a 7th either. Anthony has potential but its one teams throw away, a guy there weren’t planning on using this year, not even as a backup, so id be cautious on the enthusiasm abou getting him and also not expect us to have given up a bunch. We had a lot of options we could have gone with, so it might seem like it, but its not like they had a ton of leverage.

Remeber we had some communications with them around the time of FA about picking him up when they wee trying to unload him then, we got Timmons in FA and afterwards selected McMillian in the draft, didnt need him anymore. Saints also moved on but kept him around as insurance for some of the other not working out. Anzalone is playing well for them, Teo has turned things around and they have a couple other guys that they are happier with than Anthony, so he really is a hope they get something for him and we just fell back to groundwork we had already laid in FA. Im sure the Saints were in a much better place to take what we were offering this time. We weren’t desperate for Anthony.

    • Tim Knight says:

And the Saints still can’t play defense.

Anthony has also been dealing with a high ankle sprain, see M13’s post above.

      • D says:

Its more than that, they had given up on him as a starter by the time TC came around. I am not even sure i feel he would be an upgrade over Allen right now, i feel like he would need to turn things around and Burke would have to put some real time into developing him to be where Allen is by mid season mark.

      • Tim Knight says:

I’m not talking him up in any way. I have lots of questions about him. He’s likely a few weeks down the road before he’s even a consideration to play. But our LB position has taken too many hits already and I guess they felt this was the best option.

  18. The Flying Pig says:

    In love the Anthony trade
Makes me breathe a sigh of relief

I know he was bad for the saints but some times a new setting changes everything

    • Tim Knight says:

First he has to get his ankle healed, then learn the defense, then play well. A lot has to happen before we know whether it was a good move or not. I would not be surprised if we cut him in a few weeks either.

  19. Ken says:

The trade for the Saints draft bust doesn’t make me feel much better about our LB corps

  23. The Flying Pig says:

I mean what are the Dolphins suppose to do

Tannehill gets hurt – you sign cutler
Timmons goes awol – you trade for a LB who has fallen out of favor elsewhere
The fact that they are making moves like this instead of shrugging is a positive sign to me

    • Tim Knight says:

Yes that’s the good part. 🙂

    • Ken says:

I agree in theory. I just don’t think Anthony is anything special. He has not demonstrated being special in his time in the league. To me it’s different than the Cutler. Say what you will about Cutler’s attitude or lack of playoff success but the guy has played at a very high level in this league

      • Tim Knight says:

He did have over 100 tackles his rookie season.

      • The Flying Pig says:

He had a good rookie year and a bad sophomore year

They also moved him from MLB to string side before his sophomore year

He’s going to play MLB for us right?

If he is half as good as he was as a rookie, it’s an improvement

This is part of a firesale by the saints
Which is becoming a trend in the NFL
I bet they trade Kenny vaccarro soon too

  24. Tim Knight says:

  26. Ken says:

I hope Anthony can live up to his potential but if you can’t start on the Saints D or for that matter be on their game day roster doesn’t give me a world of confidence in him

  27. Tim Knight says:

Piggy, not sure where Anthony will play but like the coaches have said, we play box LBs so it’s not that important. Maualuga can also play inside. They’ll figure out who plays best where.

  28. The Flying Pig says:

If Anthony can defend against those will flair outs Melvin Gordon was living on – that will be huge

We really needed more athleticism at LB, and he has it

  29. Glad the Phins brass still listens to me.

  30. D says:

Yeah im not in love with this pick up but i dont hate it either. I think i would have preferred them trading for Kendricks, even if it might have been a bit more of an investment.

  31. D says:

Anthony for a 5th is the right risk vs potential reward, i wont go higher than that as far as saying the deal was a good or bad one. The rest is up to Anthony and the coaching staff to make it a “steal” or just another wasted pick.

  32. Mike E. says:

    It’s a 5th and Jarvis Landry

  33. The Flying Pig says:

Weirdest start to the season in the history of the Dolphins

Wtf happens next? Do we convert the stadium to a UFO and travel through space and time. Won’t surprise me.

    • Ken says:

Sounds like the start of the next porcine odyssey

    • D says:

No, Ross is just going to sell the team when he goes to London, to Branson and he is going to keep the team in London at Wimbley until a new stadium gets built. All the rest of the home games are going to be canceled and Ross is going to send a personal Ah-ha! letter to OD as a goodbye present.

    • Tim Knight says:

LMAO!!!! Maybe we’d still find ways to win.

  34. D says:

A few thoughts on our team, and recent things.

    1) i think as long as there is no mental health issue, the suspension for a game or two at the very least is the right way to go with Timmons, and that’s stepping outside myself because i would like push for a 4 game suspension and just lay the law down. If its a mental health issue, they should IR him, or whatever the NFI IR is.

    2) Stephone Anthony is the embodiment of a guy with all the gifts, but LB is a position where instincts mean more than Physical gifts. If you cant have both in the same person, err on the side of the guy with less physical gifts but more instincts. If his weakness of bad instincts never changes, we just wasted a 5th, good thing thats not a big deal.

    3) We do have Trevor Riley on the PS as well, and he looked solid in PS, just not special, and to be honest we aren’t going to get special without paying for special, so if you are the type who doesn’t like to see us trade off a high draft pick, this Anthony move is for you, you shouldn’t be bemoaning it, but if you are the kind of person that says, as long as we get value, you don’t care if we trade a high pick, i believe we could have done better than Anthony.

I would have loved to have seen Timmons work out for us. He has a convict kind of look to him, i was looking forward to seeing him hurt some people lol, but wasnt meant to be maybe, guy might have loose marbles rollin around in there, or he has a problem with the coaches (i saw it suggested somewhere that he may have gotten pulled as a starter because he was late to a meeting, and that set him off), whatever it is, he may not be good for our team which is just now finding its culture and getting its identity back, so if its the case that he cant be a positive addition to the team, good riddance and hope he catches on where he can make a difference.

  35. naplesfan2010 says:

    At Clemson,
Anthony was the hammer to Vic Beasley’s lightning strikes.
    He ran a 4.56 40, at 6’3 243, with a 4.03 shuttle and 23 reps.
He had a 37 inch vertical and was said to have
” Good play speed and is generally under control. Steady, consistent tackler when he’s squared up. Has speed to chase to the sidelines and finish the play. Able to cover tight ends in passing game. Breaks to ball quickly against pass. Flashes ball skills and will play through pass-catchers. Features traits to be a more effective blitzer if called upon. Will compete through whistle and is physical against skill-position players.

    • D says:

Ya know though, some players look better because other players are so dominant that spend more resources watching out for them than the other guy, letting the other guy look like something better than he may be. Vic Beasley has been very successful since coming into the league, Anthony, not so much. Again, im not anti Anthony, especially since now he is on our team, but obviously, his game hasn’t translated to the NFL so far, so its better to not place high expectations on a guy who so far hasn’t delivered on many of them.

  36. naplesfan2010 says:

    Unfortunately, he’s not very bright.
“Below average take-on skills. Plays with poor leverage when taking on blocks. Needs to improve hand usage and utilize better arm extension to keep blockers off him. Has tendency to side-step blocks and open run lanes. Can be mismatched by running backs down the field in passing game. Sluggish dropping into zone coverage and will drift too deep. Slow to process and recover against play-action. There are times he gets downhill without diagnosing first, creating bad angles to the ball against outside runs.”

    • D says:

Ya know who that reminds me of? …..Phillip Wheeler, except i think Wheeler had a little better instincts than that article is describing.

  37. naplesfan2010 says:

I do think the game plan was to make damn sure we gave up no long bombs, while snuffing the rushing. This makes it very hard to score a lot because every drive has to be a long one, and then with no rushing yards, sustaining drives is impossible.

    It worked..17 points, 3rd down efficiency – 25%.longest pass play 24 yards

  38. naplesfan2010 says:

Anthony in college was often that “man among boys” thing that doesn’t always translate to the NFL.

The humanity of it all!

  41. D says:

We definately schemed containment in the secondary, when your CB’s have as many tackles as ours did oyu think it must have been a really bad day against the run, but it was because we let Rivers dink and dunk and just tackled well after the catch, which kind of kept them from getting big plays. I hope to god though they dont try that shit with NE, they will murder us if we do. A couple other teams really would too, like the Steelers, and the Ravens.

    • naplesfan2010 says:

Since 2008, we have not understood how to game plan to beat the Ravens.
We do ok with the Steelers and the patsies, although Gase lost twice to them last year.

    • Tim Knight says:

To me slowing down the Pats is more about tackling than coverages. We didn’t tackle well last year. We did on Sunday. It was an emphasis all offseason. To beat the Pats is still about pressuring Brady and not being sloppy on offense.

  42. naplesfan2010 says:

  48. Tim Knight says:

Click on the position tab to see the roster clearer. I hate name alphabetical order. Look at the 6 current LBs with Timmons now suspended to see what we have at this time. Gase does not play around and the FO is aggressive. It’s not always going to work out, but not from a lack of trying to sustain a season and try to win. That’s the culture Ross wanted, hired Tannenbaum to lead it as VP – Grier is on the same page as Mr. T as GM, hired Gase to coach it. They all work together. No weird infighting. That always seemed to be the problem with the org in the not so distant past.

    Go Phins!!!!!!

      • The Flying Pig says:

Honestly I’m happy with those 6

Hull was solid last week (albeit he has his shortcomings)

I wouldn’t want to start Hull and Chase Allen together but I think they are fine in terms of rounding out depth chart

When the regular season is over, I think we might look back and say that Anthony was no worse, or even better than Timmons

        And he is 25
So I’m 18 when McMillan is back – we have 2 young LBs to work with

All those years I was frustrated with not drafting LBs – how can I complain when Anthony was one of the guys I wished we drafted?

      • Tim Knight says:

Suh is a dominant presence. He’s a unique guy. He wrecked the Chargers running game and pressured Rivers.

  51. ElephantRider says:

Hope Anthony works out, but there is a reason a horrible defense let him go….

    • steveccnv says:

Because a D is horrible isn’t an indication by itself of any individual player, if that were true we could cut Jones, Suh and Wake and no one should care, because our D sucked last year. Anthony’s weaknesses don’t go well with what the Saints do.

  52. pheloniusphish says:

Regarding defending against the Pats, I think KC showed us the blueprint. Play three man rush, eight in coverage in most passing situations. Take away the quick throws that Brady likes. Throw in an occasional blitz just to hit him.

  53. pheloniusphish says:

The Anthony signing seems to me to be a depth/roll the dice signing. Maybe his light comes on. Maybe it doesn’t. Cost a 5th rounder. So what, we got to keep Landry.

    • steveccnv says:

Some here are trying to compare him to a starting NFL LB, but he needs to be compared to what we have now as our 5th or 6th LB. We need bodies at LB.

  54. Rockphin says:

Yeah we traded two picks for Carroo. I wasn’t happy about that either. What was the point of this post? It doesn’t make it ok to waste a draft pick on a player who doesn’t help the team just because we did it before.

    • steveccnv says:

We need LBs, no one was available through FA, so they made a trade for a guy that, if he works out you’re getting a 1st rounder. We aren’t wasting a pick, we’re trying not to waste our season.

  57. Rockphin says:

Andy Cohen the team shill, wrote an article (responses to fans questions) where he was asked about Cutler’s erratic play the first game and AC’s response was he thought Cutler played “great” and HE couldn’t see any bad passes. I’m not trying to bash Cutler hear, but Man what game was AC watching? Cutler got bailed out all game by the WR’s. Bad passes all over the field. Behind the receivers, below their knees, over their heads, under-thrown, over-thrown. It was not a “great” performance. He didn’t throw and picks and his completion percentage was high, but that was mostly the WR’s making great catches.

Not to mention KC had killed NE before early and everyone said Brady has lost his touch, they won the superbowl that year.

  59. Rockphin says:

Steve, I didn’t say that we did waste a pick. I said I hope it works out because I hate wasting picks. I agree we need LB’s. It completely sucks that rookie never played a defensive snap for us and either has the free agent we brought in to shore up the unit. Also disappointed that our young ‘developing’ player Hewitt couldn’t stay healthy and make the squad. We are weak at LB AGAIN this year.

I HOPE the new guy works out. I HOPE Raekwon comes back healthy and is a very good player for us for years. and I HOPE we draft another stud this offseason.

  60. ocalarob says:
