Game Wrap Up with the Little Prawn: Week 2

IMG_1742

HERE WE GO!  Week 2 was officially the first week for the Dolphins and Prawny and I really enjoyed opening game.

In Prawny’s case, maybe a little too much…

sickPrawny

Prawny are you okay?  I’m sure everyone will understand if you want to call in sick.

You may have had too a little too much too drink…

No you want to go on?  What a trooper!

IMG_1744

This first half was not so exciting.  Actually it was a little but frustrating.

The Dolphins didn’t stretch the field as some of us thought they would with Jay Cutler at the helm.  Actually there was a ton of dink and dunk.

IMG_1748

I think the most notable positive thing to say about the first half was the Dolphins run defense which did a good job shutting down the run.

Actually the Dolphins held the Chargers to 44 total rushing yards for the game.  One of our better performances in recent years.

Prawny what did you think of the 1st half?

Prawnypukes

Oh my God Prawny!

It wasn’t that bad!  It was just a slow conservative stuff.

Man….what did you eat before the game?

gross…

stills.0_49__dragged_

It picked up in the 2nd half.

Above is Kenny Stills celebrating a 29 yard touchdown early in the 3rd quarter.

Our wide receivers lived up to the expectations and they all contributed in their own way.

Landry caught 13 passes for 78 yards.

But no one was an impressive as Devante Parker who made a spectacular catch

IMG_1747

He finished with 4 catches for 85 yards.  But neither Parker nor Landry could get in the endzone.  Likewise, Jay Ajayi didn’t score a touchdown.

But Ajayi was till impressive.  He ran for 122 yards on 28 carries.

IMG_1743

The Dolphins actually had 336 yards of total offense.  Not horrible but not really as explosive as most of us want.

Thankfully a certain waiver wire acquisition was clutch.

CodyParkey-610x354

Cody Parkey was the hero of the game.

He hit 4 field goals on Sunday including the game winning 54 yard field goal.

Honestly the last few minutes of the game had Dolphins fans more frustrated than the first half.

But the Dolphins won and are now 1-0

Meanwhile the Dolphins next opponent, the jests, got blown out.  Bring on the Jests!

Good Job Pig. Devante looks like he’s about to explode. He’s finally playing up to his size and potential, now he’s just got to start finding the end zone more. Apparently Cutler realizes Landry is the go to receiver in tough spots as well.

  11. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

    PFF
DL NDAMUKONG SUH, 89.7 OVERALL GRADE
Ndamukong Suh continues to be one of the best interior defenders in football and he dominated this game up the middle for the Dolphins defense. Suh finished the day with just one solo run stop, but that doesn’t take into account how he consistently squeezed holes shut or forced Chargers’ running backs to change their points of attack. He finished with a game high 90.2 run defense grade. Suh also recorded four quarterback hurries, a few of which happened less than two seconds after the snap.

EDGE WILLIAM HAYES, 82.6 OVERALL GRADE
It was an impressive game for Hayes, as he made a big impact despite limited snaps. Hayes only rushed the quarterback 17 times in this game, but ended up with a sack and three additional quarterback hurries. That’s good for a very strong 19.1 pass-rush productivity score in this game. Hayes also played well against the run, finishing with a run defense grade of 81.9.

  12. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

    PFF
QB JAY CUTLER, 80.3 OVERALL GRADE
QB Jay Cutler looked comfortable under head coach Adam Gase’s familiar offense. He excelled when given time in the pocket, completing 83 percent of his 24 attempts for 199 yards and a touchdown. Cutler took a fair amount of shots deep, attempting 7 passes over 20 yards and completing 3 for 91 yards.

HB JAY AJAYI, 77.7 OVERALL GRADE
HB Jay Ajayi was a workhorse for the Dolphins in their win, carrying the ball 28 times for 122 yards. Ajayi was tough to bring down for the Chargers as he forced 8 missed tackles and finished with 82 yards after contact. He ended the day with an elusive rating of 78.1, for context he led the league last season with an elusive rating of 76.

  13. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

    PFF
QB PHILIP RIVERS, 80.0 OVERALL GRADE
For the second straight week, Rivers played well and put his team in a position to win with a last-second field goal, only to see special teams let him down. Rivers was quite effective in this game, pushing the ball downfield as often as he could. He really showed what he could do when he was given time in the pocket. When throwing from a clean pocket with no pressure (63 percent of his dropbacks), Rivers completed a ridiculous 24-of-25 passes for 265 yards.

T RUSSELL OKUNG, 88.5 OVERALL GRADE
The Chargers shelled out big money for what they hoped would be an upgrade at the tackle position when they signed Okung this offseason. He proved to be just that in this game, playing extremely well protecting Rivers’ blind side. Okung allowed just one pressure all game and it was pretty late in the play. He’s allowed just three total pressures this season and has a pass-blocking efficiency of 96.6. Okung also had a team-high run-blocking grade of 87.7 in this game.

  14. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

    PFF
CB TREVOR WILLIAMS, 81.7 OVERALL GRADE
Second-year CB Trevor Williams was the standout player in the Chargers secondary, as he was targeted 5 times, allowing three catches for 41 yards. He limited opposing receivers to only three yards after the catch and also recorded a pass breakup. Williams finished with the second highest coverage grade on the team of 81.3.

EDGE MELVIN INGRAM, 76.0 OVERALL GRADE
EDGE rushers Melvin Ingram and Joey Bosa were neutralized by Miami’s game plan of getting the ball out of QB Jay Cutlers hands quickly, as he averaged 2.34 seconds per attempt. Ingram and Bosa still had their impact as they totaled 6 pressures and a sack. Ingram finished with a pass-rush grade of 77.7, which was tops on the defense.

Phish are you saying that Gase made good halftime adjustments or did not?

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

It seems like we can never execute a screen properly and the other team seems to always gash us with them….

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

He’s saying good adjustments at the half. When you have 3 pts in the first half, are trailing, then score 16 pts in the 2nd half after opening up the offense, and win, yeah that constitutes good adjustments, even though it’s what we expected from the start.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Gase seemed to be really concerned with Ingram and Bosa, so his approach seemed to be stay in the game early, so Cutler’s Int issues didnt show up, then once comfortable open it up, but not wide open. I expect a similar approach next week. We’re again going to be frustrated at the slow start. I doubt Gase takes too many chances.

  20. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Cornerback Xavien Howard was targeted a league-high 13 times in Week 2 and allowed a league-high 10 receptions for 87 yards, including a key one on San Diego’s final drive that ended with a missed field goal. His overall grade of 46.8 ranked 62nd among all cornerbacks for week two.

While linebacker Mike Hull – forced into a major role – held up in the running game, he allowed all nine passes thrown against him to be caught for 95 yards. The targets, receptions and yards allowed were all the most for any linebacker in coverage for Week 2.

I can’t find it now, but I read somewhere that a “League source” said that it is not early onset CTE. what ever that means. (I know what CTE is, just don’t understand the context)

I guess we will hear after the 3pm press conference this afternoon.

  32. herdfan's avatar herdfan says:

We were joking about it yesterday but Timmons is sounding like a J Martin situation as time goes on. No mention that he was sick so it almost has to be a psychological thing with the limited information we have. I’d rather he be sick. You can get better from that. Head cases are trickier.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I guess the difference is Timmons is an 11 year veteran and Martin was fairly inexperienced in the NFL

So I think we give Timmons the benefit of the doubt for now

  33. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

The raiders and the jests are on the complete opposite side of the spectrum

      Really bad formula overall
He also has he cheats over the Chiefs when that game was just a week ago

And a couple of 1-1 teams like the Seahwaks and packers who both look prett bad early in the season are ranked highly

And it may not even be a ‘mental issue’… if something traumatic happened to a loved one, perhaps it was just a temporal matter. Nevertheless, he’d probably need to be cleared by a doctor as ‘good to go’ after the event.

  41. D's avatar D says:

    My thoughts on this game.
    Not great, not awful.
Some encouraging signs, some discouraging signs.
We didnt win as much as we didnt lose,
Lucky to some extent, unlucky to some extent.

Now for the meat and potatoes.

Cutler played well, it look though as if our game scheming didnt really let him open it up much. It was a confidence building game, and i really didnt think we were playing to win as much as playing to get in the swing of things and make our team lean on each other to win, not try to have one guy carry us.

That said, and as i said before, pocket presence, hands down Cutler over Tanny, and i doubt with great certainty that Tanny ever gets that good. He moves in the pocket better, he can throw regadless of what the pocket is giving him, ie the high release, side release, etc that they were talking about in the game. Its one game but we know what he is capable of and Tanny just isnt.

We also saw what he isnt capable of and thats any option running lol. Tanny hands down beats him there, but honestly thats not a skill i care that my QB is great at. let other teams play like that, id be happier with great pocket mobility/sack avoidance than all that mess.

His throws were pretty solid. He could have had better touch on his deep throws but he definitely put it where Parker had the best change to do his thing, so the placement wasn’t bad, it just wasn’t a hit in stride kid of catch.

I think as the year goes on, Cutler is going to be allowed to open it up a lot more. Also, you could really see the difference in the way that Cutler audibles those plays, he didn’t just switch the play he switched them and called out what the defense was showing, got blockers assigned off correctly and as a result the protection was much improved.

Landry is Landry, he did his thing he caught a bunch of passes, no big broken yardage but he worked his ass off and gave us some good routes and showed those great hands he has. He definately had some catches that made Cutler look better because Cutler was a little behind him. Again, as to be expected when you are talking about a guy with as little time with his WR’s as he does, so i expect those to be more on target as the year goes along.

Thomas didn’t give us a ton, but i think it was not really a game designed to feature him. I think Gase is letting Cutler get to know his receiver, starting off with smaller quicker passes to get timing down, and he will work his way to getting all the players involved at full speed on a bunch of different routes. I did like to see the TE involved, but id like to see more to be satisfied with either the offense or Thomas.

Parker was pretty great, he didnt bust off a big one really, but he made some exceptional catches. I dont think at all we got as much as we wanted, but i also think given what we saw in preseason, we are seeing it carry over to the games. Its going to get better.

Stills wasnt featured a ton, he did give us our only TD and he was open a good bit. He really is a number 3 receiver for us on most plays, its still going to be Jarvis and Devante, and Stills will either have a great game, because they commit too much to those two, or he is going to have a ok game because they are keeping a safety on him to keep him from getting over the top.

Ajayi was excellent, he runs like a freight train, he is unreliably one of the best RB’s we have had since Ricky.

OL as a whole were pretty good, that was a tough assignment for both James and Tunsil and they both responded pretty well, James in particular has Bosa stalemated all game. Tunsil had some ugly oopsies against Ingram like the one play where he stepped inside first and that pretty much just opened the door for the Ingram sack. Still, two of the better pass rushers in the league, and they had what, one true sack (Ingram) and then a scramble sack where cutler was actually across the scrimmage line, so should have counted as a 0 year gain tackle. Steen held up pretty well, Bushrod was a lot better than he was at the start of the year last year. Pouncey looked pretty solid. Running game, pass prob, both wins for our OL.

On defense, we were seemingly giving them a lot of room to work with (scheme), or the CB’s are just shit. There was no coverage that was tight, and Rivers just kept picking up yards and completions. We had some decent play out of our safeties, but not great their either. Jones even had at best an OK game.

Our LBs did OK as well, especially given they were left high and dry by a supposed leader of the unit, and being thrust into the starting role, Chase Allen was solid. Really disappointed by Timmons. It might be excusable, i dont know but its not sounding like it.

DL had a decent day, but they really weren’t getting much pressure from the outside. Wake had a couple nice moments, Hayes looked about the best of everyone, Branch and Harris seemed to be non-factors. Hell even our blitzing was picked up and only slightly hurried the passer. That was one of the spots i was most anticipating some excitement, but just didnt happen.

Special teams were good, coverage on ST’s wasnt great. Grant made something out of nothing, Drake was a step from a TD on a kickoff, and Parkey looked really good too.

All in all its a W and ill take it, its also was exactly what i was hoping for but i wasnt overly disappointed by it either. I really struggled when my son, who had to miss the game, ased me how they looked because i really couldnt say good, i couldn’t say bad. I know we cant play like that every game and expect to be in the playoffs, but it could have been a lot worse and we have often seen a lot worse at the beginning of the season.

    • D's avatar D says:

They are talking like ti was almost an uncontrollable mental contortion where he just walked, and didnt tell anyone. That wouldnt be some run of the mill emotional issue, that would be something that even a tough guy would have a hard time making sense to himself and would likely scare the shit out of him, givne the CTE discussion that everyone has been having recently. It looks like they ruled out CTE, but for him to get that tested, you can assume the incident was similar to the crazy that has brought several people to kill themselves and do extremely irrational things.

I mean it may have a source of a baby nanna feud, but the reaction of leaving like that I think is what the Dr is about. Again I read something where Timmons said, it’s not CTE thank God or something to that effect indicating he got checked out at the Dr’s for CTE which probably means he wasn’t fully in his right mind making that decision for him to kinda talk like he was scared about CTE because he did something that didn’t even make sense to him. I’d be scared too if that were the case.

  58. D's avatar D says:

Tim I don’t know if it was or wasn’t part of the plan. The game plan was confusing. Sometimes it felt like they were playing soft zone, other time it seemed like press but really bad coverage so it could have been a little of both.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Again, they really didn’t beat us with any big plays. They dinked and dunked a lot. You can’t stop everything. We did stop the run well.

  59. D's avatar D says:

Incidentally, am I the only one that screamed profanities at the TV when we called a timeout for them at the end of the game?

  60. D's avatar D says:

I know the bolts are 0-2 and perpetual underachievers but that was a good pass rushing team, with a good set of receivers and two almost unstoppable TEs, and we did stay close enough on defense to keep them from putting 30 or more on us. It’s not the worst we have played and we did tackle well one they had the ball, well for the most part. I don’t want to see as many completions in the rest of our game but it was effective overall. We got by with one this time. Let’s hope we destroy the Jets so we can feel better about ourselves lol.

  61. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

What’s so eerie is that Timmons has always been known as a chill dude with zero sociopathic or even instability issues. At least as far as i know. And this is a guy I do know somewhat better than most.

I guess sometimes the quiet ones are holding a lot in and then it gets to be too much.

You don’t tell me a thing to do. You go off on some unhinged inaccurate tirade at me. I’ll say whatever I damn well please.
    ———-
Only after constantly provoking me to do so with your unhinged, inaccurate posts directed at me and others (with eye-ball rolls included) over a mere difference of football opinions over the last several days. If you personally attack me (or others), I WILL RESPOND.

I’m TRYING to reconcile with ya, Herd!!! You can say whatever ya damn well please, but I certainly didn’t tell ya a thing to do in jovially asking ya to lighten up (with a smiley face to boot!). I’m merely trying to reconstitute PEACE.

You’ve made two STELLAR points today, and 100% agreed with you on those points. How much longer are you going to carry your hatred towards me and specific others? HATE KILLS from the inside out.

I offer you an olive branch as a symbol of peace and Phins unity. That’s all I can do… will you meet me halfway?

  63. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Landry’s stats also show us how much he is a part of our ball control offense. Mix his numbers with Ajayi and you have 41 plays for 200 at 4.9 YPP. That’s why we won the TOP battle by almost 7 minutes.

  64. BailBondMike's avatar BailBondMike says:

I believe the timeout in the end was a good idea. If they kick the FG with 3 seconds to go and make it, game over. With 10 seconds left, it gave us time to at least try to get a kick return to take the game back. I think that is what his reasoning was, IMO.

  65. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I think the game plan was oddly similar on both sides of the ball, not a common thing.

With Rivers, if you take away his running game and his deep game, he can’t beat you (okay, especially if his kicker sucks). With most teams that is the case, although not the Patriots.

We played the same game we allowed them to have, except we had Ajayi trampling tacklers.
We did that to get Cutler some confidence with a high completion rate and to keep him from getting antsy and throwing 6 INTs. This was not only his first game of the season (and not their first) but also the first with our team and the first in a long time, after quitting football. I know you know all this, but i am glad that Gase appreciated the fact that it is a long season and we needed something to build off not something ELSE to be all bummed about.

We did not want to start like we did last year.

So i think Gase was very protective of Cutler’s ego and restricted the playbook most of the time. We scored on 5 drives without the benefit of a single turnover, so if we could’ve just been a but better in the red zone, we could have gotten 25-30 points easy.

Victory Monday! Looks like we are going to have a similar team from last year depending on how injuries go. An offense that is above average and capable of winning the game for us, but not dominant by any means. A defense that gives up yards in sometimes embarrassing fashion, but capable of coming up with some big stops or turnovers to win the game.

We won a crazy amount of close games last season to get into the playoffs. The numbers say that won’t continue to work in our favor. I think we will be competitive with most teams though. Should be an entertaining season with our team in playoff contention again. We really need to get lucky in the draft to take the next step though.

OK, let’s try and clear the air. I understand completely what Herd is saying. Just because I’m more tolerant of it doesn’t make it right. This blog has been very harmonious. No problems to really speak of. We have gotten along as well as any big group of people with different opinions possibly can. M, don’t take this the wrong way, and I say this with no malice whatsoever, but you just came back to this blog, and yes, you have brought up what happened on the blog as if it’s evidence of our wrongdoing, and although you may not think you’re overstepping your bounds, telling us, those who made this blog, and keep it running how to treat anyone, is out of line. What happened in the past is long gone, and we weren’t wrong for leaving and creating a new blog.

We welcome anyone who comes here, and and ALL of you that have been here from the beginning, or those of you that have recent;y come back, can admit we don’t police this blog, and we let everyone say what they want to say. I get why Herd takes umbrage to being told how to treat someone here, because we have been treating EVERYONE the right way since this blog has started. Tghere are NO sides, minions, or anything of the sort. We’re all EQUAL here, and no one is telling anyone what to do, or when to do it. That’s the best way I can explain the situation. I hope everyone can comprehend what I’m putting forth. We have put a lot of effort to make a blog where we write our own material, and publish it for all to enjoy. Herd did a great job getting the blog going, and continuing to work to keep it going all the time. So have Son, Piggy, Ken, Twice and myself. Sure, there are disagreements as expected, but we all try to respect each other, and the last thing any of us want to do is police or censor anyone, We all want to just coexist.
