Game Wrap Up with the Little Prawn: Week 2

IMG_1742

HERE WE GO!  Week 2 was officially the first week for the Dolphins and Prawny and I really enjoyed opening game.

In Prawny’s case, maybe a little too much…

sickPrawny

Prawny are you okay?  I’m sure everyone will understand if you want to call in sick.

You may have had too a little too much too drink…

No you want to go on?  What a trooper!

IMG_1744

This first half was not so exciting.  Actually it was a little but frustrating.

The Dolphins didn’t stretch the field as some of us thought they would with Jay Cutler at the helm.  Actually there was a ton of dink and dunk.

IMG_1748

I think the most notable positive thing to say about the first half was the Dolphins run defense which did a good job shutting down the run.

Actually the Dolphins held the Chargers to 44 total rushing yards for the game.  One of our better performances in recent years.

Prawny what did you think of the 1st half?

Prawnypukes

Oh my God Prawny!

It wasn’t that bad!  It was just a slow conservative stuff.

Man….what did you eat before the game?

gross…

stills.0_49__dragged_

It picked up in the 2nd half.

Above is Kenny Stills celebrating a 29 yard touchdown early in the 3rd quarter.

Our wide receivers lived up to the expectations and they all contributed in their own way.

Landry caught 13 passes for 78 yards.

But no one was an impressive as Devante Parker who made a spectacular catch

IMG_1747

He finished with 4 catches for 85 yards.  But neither Parker nor Landry could get in the endzone.  Likewise, Jay Ajayi didn’t score a touchdown.

But Ajayi was till impressive.  He ran for 122 yards on 28 carries.

IMG_1743

The Dolphins actually had 336 yards of total offense.  Not horrible but not really as explosive as most of us want.

Thankfully a certain waiver wire acquisition was clutch.

CodyParkey-610x354

Cody Parkey was the hero of the game.

He hit 4 field goals on Sunday including the game winning 54 yard field goal.

Honestly the last few minutes of the game had Dolphins fans more frustrated than the first half.

But the Dolphins won and are now 1-0

Meanwhile the Dolphins next opponent, the jests, got blown out.  Bring on the Jests!

Not gloating in the least, but for once, I was pretty dead on with how I said the game was going to. Cutler threw maybe 8-10 passes more than I said he would, i think I said about 25, not sure, but I said we weren’t throwing bombs all over the place, and also said we were going to lean heavy on Ajayi.

Pig, I like analytics, but the ESPN’s FPI is complete trash. I wish there was a way to bet against it. A 10-20% outlier is a healthy ratio for computer rankings. FPI is closer to 50% and they still try to defend it.

FPI projected the Utes to win 3.5 games this college season. They’re 3-0 so far….

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

its almost silly to even do this is professional football – where teams are closer than people think

I did some more reading on weatherunderground.com relating to Hurricane Maria. They are pretty certain this cat 4 storm will be in the Turks and Caicos Islands area ON FRIDAY, which makes it impossible for Maria to get to the Meadowlands by Sunday. While I think there’s a chance this game might be played Saturday, Sunday seems the most likely day FOR NOW for the Fins @ Jets game. But having said that, those of you along the eastern coast of the U.S. from North Carolina to Martha’s Vineyard need to watch this storm VERY CAREFULLY. BE PREPARED TO TAKE ACTION IN THE EVENT THIS VERY DANGEROUS STORM SHIFTS DIRECTION! IF you decide to leave the area, do so as soon as possible b/c all the major (and not so major) highways will be totally clogged with cars/trucks and other traffic. IT WILL BE your worst nightmare come true IF YOU DELAY!!!

  26. D's avatar D says:

Adam Schefter of ESPN reported Monday that Timmons is “doing much better today and wants to resume playing immediately,” but that he will be meeting with doctors before any decision is made on that front. There’s no word on what the medical issue might be, but Schefter reports, via a source, that they do not believe it is “the early onset of CTE.”

This is what I was talking about earlier. IMO with the baby mama talk and him going to an irrational level of bailing out on his job responsibilities to go see his child, when he was about to be able to travel back and see them says to me he was completely emotionally unstable, and it was so concerning to him/the team he got checked out for CTE. I bet the thing they are trying to figure out isn’t what happened, but rather is this going to be something that could happen again. Not good to have a mentally unstable guy around the rest of the team and count on that guy every week

  32. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

The D was excellent against the run, It seems the D has more of a bend don’t break vanilla philosophy, even though Rivers passed for 3r0 yards we only gave up 17 points, however on the last drive when they started getting close we went to man coverage. The running game was outstanding, not sure how chargers D stacks up in terms of run stats but the fact that ajayi rushed for 122 yards to a D that hasn’t given up a 100 yard rusher in 17 games is very promising. I still think the offense is a little green and needs more time to gel together, the good news is they can only get better.

  33. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

What was the deal with calling that last timeout? Shouldn’t we have waited until they spiked the ball? It worked out but was clearly a mistake by the coaching staff.

  35. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

  36. D's avatar D says:

OCRob, Gase said it was intentional. He said Rivers was waving his guys back to milk it down to 2 seconds and Gase said he wanted to keep something, even if it was just a couple of seconds. At first I didn’t agree with it, but he was right, I mean it’s not like Phillips was going to let the time run out, he had a down to play with, and in the case he made it, something was better than nothing as far as having time left to try to get one last shot.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

That definitely makes sense. The way the announcers made it seem during the game was that the Chargers were in disarray, that Rivers wanted to spike the ball, but couldn’t get the line set, and that we bailed them out by calling a time out. Obviously, that wasn’t the case.

    • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

the time may have ran out as the kicking unit ran onto the field while Philip Rivers was getting the team lined up to spike the ball. Los Angeles had no timeouts and a 10-second run-off would have ended the game had the refs flagged it for too many men on the field.

  37. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

It’s going to be interesting to see how the Timmons situation plays out. I think Gase will give Timmons more slack in this situation, because we need him, because he’s a good player, and our depth isn’t good at the moment. I think we’re also on the hook for $11M of the $12M contract he signed if we cut him

    • herdfan's avatar herdfan says:

Isn’t there some kind of ‘the player walks out on the team clause? There should be. I feel for the guy if he has issues but you can’t expect to do that stuff and get paid can you?

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

There could be clauses written into the contract for that, but I can almost guarantee you it wasn’t in this one. Guy started 101 games in a row for the Steelers, so there would have been no reason to suspect any problems.

  38. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

ORob – I just checked to see if SD had any TO’s left, they had none. It’s possible Rivers was trying to dupe MIA into thinking they weren’t going to be able to get set in time, so that’s why Gase called a TO. I wish I had it recorded, so I can see.

    • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

you normally would call time out prior to the kick to ice the kicker, calling timeout then prevented us from icing the kicker as you cant call timeouts back to back, i doubt there would have been any time left to actually do something offensively.

      Bottom line it worked.

    • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

They had 10 seconds to get set and spike the ball plenty of time

Can we apply that standard to all of our elected and appointed governmental officials? Seems like a bunch of them get paid and receive “Campaign Donations” every day, whether or NOT they do something productive for the people they “represent.” My answer to the health care issue is to give all of our citizens the same health care plan our congressmen and senators have. Props to Gase and Tannebaum. Accountability is a major difference between this regime and the Phibin years. I want to see Timmons play for us. He is an upgrade but he let his teammates down and must be held accountable

Like I was saying earlier, as fans, we deserve to know the whole story on Timmons, even if it’s personal and not criminal in nature.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I know but we only had 4 LBs for the game in LA. Sheppard would be the same thing. Hewitt is injured or he’d be on the team and Jenkins has now been cut by both the Raiders and Bills. I’d hope we’d go in another direction.

Rock — they at least knew you were paying attention. Next time something interesting hits your ears, just keep listening. You can figure out who they are later.

    1. I don’t make a habit of eavesdropping.
    2. How do you know if something is interesting out of context? If I hadn’t recognized who they were their conversation would have meant nothing to me.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Not blaming you at all Rock….just giving tips from my inside the Beltway years. The things I learned by keeping my ears open. Even if didn’t apply this time might down the road.

  81. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

We lost McMillan for the season, Hewitt has a shoulder injury that likely will make him miss most if not all of the season so he was cut – would have been a UFA or RFA in 2018, and now Timmons goes AWOL all before we even played a RS game. It’s not easy to be loaded at LB 6, 7 or 8 deep.

Collating several articles here, so forgive the lack of a source citation, but consensus is Juwuan James ate up Joey Bosa. By one measure he ranked 12th among all tackles.

  85. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

    from Barry Jackson:
The Chargers blitzed Jay Cutler only three times in 35 drop backs and Cutler made them pay.

Per PFF, Cutler had the fifth-highest grade of all quarterbacks in Week 2. When facing no pressure, Cutler completed 20 of 24 passes for 199 yards, a touchdown and no interceptions, for an NFL passer rating of 115.1.

In 11 drop-backs under pressure, Cutler was 4-9 for 31 yards and had a rating of 53.5.

Also, Cutler’s 101.8 rating ranks 11th in the league.

  86. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

    also from Jackson:
Jarvis Landry’s 15 targets were second-most in the league this week and his 13 catches led the league. He gained 62 of his 78 yard after the catch, which led NFL receivers this weekend. Keep in mind that Landry’s 630 yards in YAC led the league last season.

  87. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Per PFF: Jay Ajayi, who had 900 yards after contact last season (second in the league), generate 82 of his 122 total yards after contact Sunday, the most for any back in Week 2.

His eight forced missed tackles also led all backs, a year after he had a league-leading 58.

  88. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

snap counts tell a story … from several sources
At running back Damien Williams played only three offensive snaps and Kenyan Drake one behind Jay Ajayi (64 of 68). At receiver, Leonte Carroo played two of the 68 offensive snaps and Jakeem Grant one. At tight end, Julius Thomas played 65 of the 68 snaps, Anthony Fasano 16 and MarQueis Gray just three.

    • Defensively, we noted above that Godchaux played more than Phillips. Ndamukong Suh was a force and played 53 of 58 snaps. Rookie sixth-rounder Vincent Taylor played three.

At defense end, snaps were divied out this way: Andre Branch 43 of the 58, Cam Wake 33, Harris 27 and William Hayes 25.

    • Biggest surprise? Cornerback Alterraun Verner, who had been battling Byron Maxwell to start, didn’t play a single snap on defense.

Xavien Howard and Byron Maxwell each played 55 of 58 defensive snaps. Bobby McCain logged 44.

Starting safeties Reshad Jones and Nate Allen played all 58.

  89. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

It was nice that Grant didn’t bobble any punts, although his catch inside the 10 where he fell down made me want to smack him, lol.

The official path of Irma passed directly over our house, just as predicted by that one model that I quoted to you guys before we lost power.

The eye wall created a “howling white out,” during which you could not hear people speaking unless they shouted in your face.

The windows on that side were all opaque as if covered some kind of by bright white goo. It was rain.
From one came a geyser of water arcing into the bedroom, while another displayed a beautiful waterfall cascading over the window sill. The whole thing lasted 10-15 minutes, but it took 8 bath towels to soak up the waterfall alone.

There was no damage to the windows.
