Week 5 – Game 4 – Tennessee @ Miami

20170817-ale-dolphins-ravens-034-e1503076646588

The Tennessee Titans are coming to town, and luckily for the Miami Dolphins, we’re catching a little break.  Titans QB Marcus Mariota suffered a hamstring strain last week in their blowout loss to the Texans.  In Mariota’s place will be veteran QB Matt Cassel.  I think it’s going to take more than a break for us to beat the Titans.  It’s not that the Titans are unbeatable, because they got drubbed 57-14 last week.  The problem is, the guy on left in the picture above, has to figure out how to get the guy on the right to perform better, and start putting points on the board. Would you believe Cutler is completing 66.7% of his passes?  OK, would you believe his average yards per attempt is is a paltry 5.8YPA?  The majority of Cutler’s career, that number is 7 or better, with a couple of seasons where he had 6.6 and 6.8.  Under 6 yards per attempt is pathetic.  We have been unable to move the ball downfield through our passing game, and as of late, the running game too.  Gase has a lot of work to do.

Julius Thomas

Why is this guy still starting?  The only answer I can come up with is it’s only our 4th game.  That’s it.  He was so wide open last week against the Saints, not a player anywhere near him when Julius Thomas made his play of the year, a 23 yard reception where he was, lack of a better description, completely ignored by the Saints defense.  I don’t have game film, but this guy can’t block.  He’s not helping Jay Ajayi or Jay Cutler lining up as a TE.  I recall MarQueis Gray being a pretty impressive blocker, and not too shabby catching the ball either.  We all know Fasano can block, so how about jump starting this offense with a tandem of Gray and Fasano in a 2 TE set?  It’s been painful to watch Ajayi get the handoff, and always having to try to beat a defender just to get to the damn line of scrimmage.  Far too often this has been the case, and of course that’s not all on Julius Thomas, or any one OL, it’s all of them.  This O-line needs to find their nasty fast before the season slips too far away.

rb600-021317

With Matt Cassel starting at QB, DeMarco Murray and Derrick Henry will be shouldering the load against us this Sunday for our 1st true Home game at The Rock.  Last week Cordrea Tankersely gave us a glimmer of a pretty solid YOUNG CB tandem, with he and Xavien Howard.  I’m a fan of Byron Maxwell, despite being much maligned by our fanbase, and I’ll be honest, he didn’t play well so far this season.  He started slow last year too, but ended up playing very well for us down the stretch.  His services may still be needed, so don’t hate on him too much.  Nate Allen is exactly what I expected him to be, underwhelming.  He’s done, but he’s our guy until week 9, when newly signed S T.J. McDonald comes off his 8 game suspension, which incidentally got pushed up a week thanks to our friend Hurricane Irma.

I think it’s going to be a physical game, the Titans have fashioned themselves as a physical team, with an aggressive run blocking O-line, and the  2 horses in Murray and Henry to carry the rock.  The Titans targeted their man in the 2016 draft, and with Tunsil still available at #8, the Titans nabbed OT Jack Conklin.  Conklin is not the physical specimen Laremy Tunsil is, but that guy is all heart and desire.  He’s a very physical player who never lets up.  The Titans O-line, especially their run blocking is their strength on offense.  LT Taylor Lewan and RT Jack Conklin are the bookends, with Quinton Spain at LG, Ben Jones at C and Josh Kline at RG.    This is an old school team, coached by and old school HC, Mike Mularkey, along with some old school assistants, like Terry Robiskie and Dick LeBeau.

Speaking of Dick LeBeau, he’s been around longer than NFL films has.  Not really, but he’s been a defensive coach in the NFL for 29 years.  The Titans have a pretty good front 7, base 3-4 defense.  DaQuan and Jurrel Casey are the ends, with Sylvester Williams at the nose. Big, physical LB’s are the thing here, with Derrick Morgan, Wesley Woodyard, Avery Williamson and of course, Brian Orakpo.  Logan Ryan (from NE) and LeShaun Sims are the corners, along with Jonathan Cyprien (SS) and Kevin Byard (FS).  This season so far, even before last weeks blowout at the hands of the Texans, this defense has not been getting it done.  They have allowed 126 points in 4 games, which puts them at 30th in the NFL.  Of course, this week, we face them after a blowout loss, so LeBeau will have these guys angry and riled up.

102 Dolphins vs Jets110716

What we need is Ajayi running in space.  He’s got to have some creases to run through, and lately, they haven’t been there.  I think we all know Ajayi is the key to getting this offense going, and of course, opposing defenses do as well, which is why they have been focused on shutting him down at all costs, and it’s working.  It seems we can’t rely on Jay Cutler to throw the rock all over the yard, hitting bombs to Parker, Stills and Grant.  Maybe someday, but it hasn’t materialized yet.  Get Ajayi going, and work it from there.

GO DOLPHINS!  Zero in!  Please . . .

    Good write up Mike

Henry and Murray are a pretty good tandem
But the one things we’ve done well this year is defend the run
    So hopefully that continues

If we make Cassell look like a HOF qb I’m going to be furious

I think our run defense is a little skewed, as stats are always susceptible to that. Teams have thrown on us with success, so when you’re throwing well, just keep it going. Chargers game, Rivers threw for 323 yards. The Jets, McCown went all world against us completing 18 of 23 for 249 yards for his best game in 10 years, and the Jets went over 100 on the ground too. The Saints put up 246 yards passing and almost got 100, 86 to be exact. We’ve been better against the run than the pass, but not really great against the run.

    mike,
good write up. I truly believe if we get the run game going our offense will start looking a lot better. I hope that’s the focus this week. The oline really needs to step up.

maybe Gase is not the offensive genius everyone has been making him out to be. Maybe he’s average at best. So far that seems to be the case.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

We started out slow, and then really turned it around last season, maybe we need to give him some time. Not quite the exact same circumstances as last year, but because we have Cutler, and not Tannehill, it’s sort of like starting fresh all over again.

      • BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

If that was the case then we should have started the season with Moore and gave cutler sometime. That’s what I suggested in august when we got cutler. So if cutler needed time and thats the reason for our slow start then its all on Gase.

I just don’t buy that excuse. This offense is pretty bad right now. Almost as bad as 2007 and philbin’s last year.

  8. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Yep Mike…..normally think too much focus is on the QB, but Cutler sure hasn’t been the gunslinger we thought we were getting except in garbage time. Don’t even see a lot of deep missed passes.
Jay-Cut was the one claiming, if see Parker one-on-one will just chuck it to him.

    • D's avatar D says:

Maybe he hasnt seen that much. The whole PS was people talking about Parker going to have a beast year, and how great he has looked, etc. Maybe the rest of the league was listening and their game plan is to eliminate Parker from those opportunities.

  9. BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

    BTW mike,
I really think the main issue is the run game and not cutler. And the run game is not working because of the oline that Gase and Mike T decided to put together. MAybe they need more time to gel but again that’s an excuse.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I have to admit, I felt the same way when we got Cutler, that Moore should start until Cutler’s ready, but how does he get ready if he’s not playing? That’s the problem, and that’s why he’s starting, and not Moore. For better or worse, our season, at least at the moment hinges on Cutler.

      • D's avatar D says:

I think it was just take our lumps and get him up to speed. I promise Moore doesnt start out much better, if any better. One isn’t use to being the starter, and leading the team, and the other hasn’t been the leader of the team before and was sailing off unto the sunset before we reeled him back in. Cutler isnt going to shake the rust off from the bench, he needs to be forced to pull up his panties and get back out there and have to build character by gutting through his problems instead of running from them. We unfortunately have 0 better options, and no benching him in favor of Moore is not going to save our season. We either save our system by getting this shit fixed, Cutler included or we wind up draft high next year lol. It is what it is.

      • D's avatar D says:

        system = season

    • D's avatar D says:

Our passing has always relied heavily on our run game, and there is a good reason why, our OL arent good enough at walling off a 7 on 5 pass rush and our QB’s have never been good at reading the rush and planning on the dump off to a uncovered receiver, which the slot, TE, or RB will shave at least one them uncovered if not 2.If we dont provide them a reason to play honest, they just bum rush us over and over and over. No OL can stand up to that, and ours has a hard time with anything past 4.

  10. D's avatar D says:

Our running game is suffering because we keep running into the teeth of a stacked box defense. Since we need the running game to help the passing, we got to get some counter runs or jumbo set force it down their throats running going then open the passing and then the balance keeps them honest so we flip back around to it helping the running game we keep trying to really start working. We might have to suffer through grinding out 4 yar gains on pure power running before we get the zone blocking to start working so Ajayi can really get the creases he needs to be as susccessful as he normally is when he does have those.

  11. D's avatar D says:

OCRob, bumps stock mods ARE illegal, all those semi-auto to full auto mods are illegal, but how do you know someone has done them. Its not like people go online and report that they have modded their guns. The only place you might catch them saying they have is social media, but everyone says you cant use social media to police people. So if ya cant police people doing something that you cant control and you cant control them doing it, how do you stop this kind of stuff.

Majority of people who do the bump stock mods though, are not going to kill people they just like the thrill of having an automatic weapons. Its the crazy that kills not the gun, not the mods, not any of it. If thinking controlling something thats pretty much uncontrollable, will fix this you are missing the point. The only thing that fixes this is sacrificing some freedoms so those that could identify and monitor people who are unstable enough to do it. Could there be abuse of this system, absolutely, they could use it to walk all up in our lives. Could they use it to label people as mentally unstable even if they arent, they were just popping off online? Sure. There is going to be a consequence for it, you just have to figure out is it worth the gain, and that goes back to the trust you have that your own method of solving the problem is going to fix things.

If you don’t like that loss of freedom for the sake of safety, you actually are accepting these thing will continue to happen. I just said the other day, you don’t even have to buy guns anymore, they have video and blueprints online for making your own. 3D printers can print the parts and you construct it. People are going to find a way to do crazy shit in the crazy part telling them to do it cant be silenced. Again, this is another example of freedom being a double edged sword.

Again, what we can do to help this…your guess is as good as mine, im trying to follow the common factors in all the shootings and majority of the time it starts with some crazy actions that people try to shrug off as just being different, or just popping off to friends, or on the internet, but maybe we shouldn’t let these kind of things be passed over. Maybe its like how we have to be at the airports “please report any suspicious activity to the nearest law enforcement officer” maybe we need to have heightened security over the internet and phone services, etc to see if we can catch these guys before they do themselves or anyone else harm. Maybe we need to start saying, little Johnny seems to be in a bad place, kids have been picking on him and his attitude towards life and just seems different BEFORE we are saying it to a reporter after little Johnny shot up the entire school.

  12. D's avatar D says:

Im not trying to call anyone on here stupid, but maybe uninformed. It seems like a lot of you are thinking this guns are made with the intention of being modified, and that is why you shouldn’t be able to buy these guns legally. Thats not the case. These modifications are made by people circumventing the design, not using something intentionally left there for the modification to be allowed.

D, from the report I watched the mods to the weapons are legal to make and sell. It’s only illegal to install and possess the weapon after the modification is finished. That’s how screwed up this thing is. Legal to sell, illegal to possess. Makes no sense.

  16. sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

I still think Gase calling the plays as a beginner HC wasn’t a good idea. That and the lack of experienced coaches running our team. When I say experienced coaches, I mean experience in running things other than positions. If you look at team’s that have turned franchises around or been successful recently they have a lot of former HC’s at coordinator and even down to positional coaches. Our entire staff is learning on the job.
The other thing with Gase is that he says of lot of the right things, but he’s slow to do actually execute those things, or he doesn’t execute them at all.
I like that he takes responsibility for things that are his fault, but at some point the action has to match his words. He’s not getting the most out of guys, especially the role players. This is something Philbin got criticized for and rightly so. When you look at teams that consistently makes playoffs and go far, it’s because those supporting guys were given chances to make plays and they did. Landry is our most electric receiver and he’s still not being used properly to maximize his potential. He hasn’t been since he got here.
This team needs something to get it’s unbeatable swagger back that they had going into the playoffs. I don’t know what that would take, but something needs to happen and soon because it’s gonna be a long season.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

There are lots of 1st time HCs who called their own plays and still do and they’ve had success. I think we’re all just looking for solutions because of the terrible funk we’re in.

  17. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

All we need is to score some points early to get the funk off. If we’re down say 10-0 or even 10-3 at the half it’s going to reach ludicrous levels.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I really think an early score can make all the difference for us
But if we have another half like we have had in all 3 games – the Dolphins will deserve some serious Boos

It’s been pretty ugly this year

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I don’t care about the boos. Just don’t want to see this continue any longer. I want to see our team pumped up and celebrating making plays.

  18. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I think we’re going to have a good game at home. I think this team definitely needs the home crowd behind it. It’s obviously a lot more than that, but I think it will help.

Bump stocks are legal and uncontrolled items. You can buy one on line (http://www.slidefire.com/).

  20. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Mike, we’re only allowing 77.7 YPG rushing. That’s pretty damn good.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Like I mentioned, teams have been throwing on us with success, so they’re just getting their yards a different way. I put up the stats there, you saw them. The Jets went over 100, The Saints didn’t need to but up 86 yards rushing,. The game where we looked particularly tough against the run was the Chargers game, shutting down Melvin Gordon, but they didn’t really try much either, only ran 14 times, because Rivers was picking us apart.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

And allowing very little points. We’re definitely keeping everything in front of is in pass defense. I don’t buy the because they’re passing argument. 3.1 YPC is the telling stat. The Jets had 34-103 3.1 YPC. Just because it was a 100 yards doesn’t tell the whole story. They had the ball for 36 minutes because our offense did nothing all day.

  21. ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

Defense is the least of the worry. Hope dictates effort……I can’t blame them falling off late because the offense just keeps 3 and outing all frickin game.

  22. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Time of possession is really putting a lot on our defense and they’re still holding up. That won’t last for long. We can’t keep allowing teams to have the ball for 10+ minutes more than us.

  29. D's avatar D says:

What i was saying is that these mods, can be purchased, but they can be done without buying them. The buying them online might be controllable to some extent, but its not stopping it. The bump stock is just a spring in the stock that when the recoil kicks back against the shoulder a rod in the stock pushes forward causing the firing pin to strike the next round, and the spring causes the stock to push forward so that the next recoil can cause it to strike against, so on and so forth. There is nothing to doing that kind of modification on your own.

Same thing for the crank mechanism. If you have ever cranked a hand winch you know there are teeth and a lock that falls over past the teeth to keep it from going backwards. The cranks they have are just things that do the same thing, but when it pulls over the teeth and fall in behind, it instead hits the firing pin when then strikes the bullet and you have a crank auto like the old Gatling guns.

There is no way to truly control it, even if you locked down the sales of these items, making them completely illegal to purchase. You might limit what people could actually do these mods in that scenario, but the ones that are really going to want to do it to harm people, they will go the extra mile.

  30. D's avatar D says:

I saw someone insinuating that the reason the guy that did the shooting isnt being called a terrorist is the color of his skin. REALLY? Thats damn ridiculous. He isnt being called a terrorist is because the definition of a terrorist is “a person who uses unlawful violence and intimidation, especially against civilians, in the pursuit of political aims.” Until they establish that he had political aims or was part of an organization that had political aims, he’s a mass murderer. Every frigging topic isn’t about race lol, jesus.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

It’s becoming absurd. You have news networks falling all over each other trying to figure out who to blame. Uhhh… how about the shooter?

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Also, typical political type people on social media using phrases like “this is Trump’s 2017 America”, as if this sort of thing has never happened before. Also seeing inquiries about why “white” males commit mass murder? Nothing could happen on this planet without people looking to blame someone not even involved in it. Do people see what they’re doing?

      • D's avatar D says:

You start with what you know and then you work to what ya dont and after you have answer to questions you make statements of fact based upon the information you have validated. Journalism 101. You call it terrorism when you have proof.

I saw someone say yesterday it didn’t matter what or why he did it, my reply was yeah i do think it matters because it tells you have sinister it really was. This is what i was talking about, if they find out he was part of an terrorist organization, that’s a whole lot bigger issue than mass murderer, it probably means there is more to come. If we is a lone whackado who killed himself, probably isolated to this one tragedy. Doesn’t help those killed but surely helps us know if we need to be on a higher alert.

  31. Randy's avatar Randy says:

I think people around here are suffering from dementia! lol Doesn’t anybody remember how many quarters and halves we played last year where we didn’t score…or scored a FG? We ranked 17th in scoring last year…and that was only because Matt Moore increased our scoring output the final 3+ games when he threw for a third of our total receiving TDs? And, we only had 14 rushing TDs. This offense hasn’t been a high scoring offense in a very long time. This isn’t just a problem this year. It’s been a problem for awhile.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

6 points in 8 quarters is a little different.

Ajayi had emerged, changed our offense and how teams defended us too. Matt Moore only had two games with good scoring – NYJ and BUF. He didn’t do much in the ARZ game when Tannehill went down. We scored only 14 points to finish up with NE and 12 in the PIT playoff game when he was horrible. Why do people try to make Matt Moore out to be something he has never been? He can come in and perform well, but he gets exposed the more he plays. That’s why he’s a backup.

      • D's avatar D says:

Thats also why Moore isnt a replacement for Cutler as in a ok now go be our leader, he’s a break in case of emergency guy, he likes the role, for what you need in that situation, he’s a good one to have, he isnt a starter though and he knows it too. I have never seen a guy more comfortable in his role as a backup QB than Moore lol.

Also last years scoring isnt helping this year scoring, so we need to focus on fixing that. I do somewhat agree with Randy about the past, but its only from a perspective of, we should all see that sometimes we harp on things because the target is someone we want to harp on. We tend to give more leniency to the players we like, we tend to have less patience for the ones we don’t. Its not really a big deal either it makes us human beings, but we are doing it here with Cutler, and we did it before with Tanny.

  32. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    D,
To me, it’s not about one player. I said the same thing about Tanny last year…that he was PART of the problem…not THE problem. You don’t have year after year of low scoring because of one player….that was kinda my point. I don’t have the answers, but I think the focus on Cutler being the problem is really not addressing a problem that’s been there before he ever got here. I don’t like Cutler….never have, but he’s part of the problem…not the problem.

    • D's avatar D says:

I agree with that, its hard sometimes to express it in a way that doesn’t get seen as just piling on or bashing or whatnot, especially when you loyalties, etc get involved.

  33. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Gase said our issues on offense start with him and is throughout the entire group. They’re not playing well. It’s definitely not just one guy, or two or three. Everyone is pitching in.

  34. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Tim,
I’m kinda tired of Gase’s comments already! He talks great…says the right things…and then we see the same crap next week. He also tends to take responsibility for stuff a lot, but it’s beginning to feel a little fake….or maybe meaningless.

  35. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    MikeE,
Hence my long history of never listening to or believing anything coaches say. Lol

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

LOL – Understood. It must be brutal for them to do interviews. They just want to get stuff right, and when what they’re doing isn’t working, the last they want to do is discuss why. Then again, they get paid the big bucks to do just that, so it comes with the job.

  36. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Tim,
If he truly believes it starts with him and changes are needed, then why does he keep doing the same things on Sundays? You’d think he’d change things…try something new. I don’t know. I’m just tired of seeing the same crap year after year. You know me though, it’s mostly on the players, and a whole bunch of them have gotta play better.

  37. D's avatar D says:

The new Yorker has a really good article on it, the writer will probably be called a racist or to have “white privileged” (to be honest i dont even know if Masha Gessen is white or not, male or female for that matter, so maybe not) but in the article i think they hit on some really good points.

They said that demands for this to be called a terrorist act is an attempt to assert something completely different, which is that white males often are the subjects of these crimes and that statistically they pose a greater threat than do Muslims in America, be they normal immigrants or even militant ones. The big part of the article is something i have said about different subjects many times. here is the quote:

“The argument confuses cause and effect. The fact that people are terrorized doesn’t necessarily mean that an act of terror has been committed. This matters, because language matters. When terms are used too broadly, or just sloppily, they lose their meaning.”

IMO this is why using the words “racism” to incorrectly identify a possibly ugly action, or when a person is insensitive about race even to a level that is disgusting to those who would have never said or done those things, or when a a person has shown prejudice, is bad. It lessens and cheapens the word racist, or racism. It blends it into the background, it starts to fall on deaf ears, it becomes associated with things that might not be viewed by all to be horrible disgusting thing it really is.

Language does matter, its how we express ourselves, our passion and disgust, it sets the tone for the discussions, and calling something racism when its really just a horrible example of something that shouldn’t be seen as acceptable doesn’t fix the problem with that thing becoming completely unacceptable and it doesn’t help true acts of racism never ever be able to be denied for what they are.

Calling this guy a terrorist so you can say , see whites are terrorist too does not help fix whatever this was, it would just wind up another brick on the stack of the terrorism wagon. Then you lose focus on why he really did it, and you never fix it or have it add to the discussion of a mental health issue we have in America, or even gun control for those that feel that’s still the right topic.

I dont really think Gase is fake, i think he is doing something a lot of people do when they have no answers to things they should have answers to and they just need to buy themselves some time to at least come up with an answer, for the good or bad of it. The phrase, fake it until you make it, comes to mind, and i think that’s kinda what he is doing right now and what he did last year. I just hope this year he has success finding whatever it is that needs to be done so that things swing back around.

Adam Lanza (the CT school shooter) was 20 years old when he shot that school up – do you really think he had any political leanings at 20. According to the article above he was not registered to vite

Congressman Giffords shooter was registered as an independent when he was registered but did not vote later

The Orlando shooter purposely sought out a gay club because he hated gays – which is hardly a democratic staple

The Charleston Church Shooter (Dylan Roof) was NOT a democrat. He was a racist who had started a website called the Last Rhodesian (celebrating white supremacy in Africa) and joined an organization called Council of Conservative Citizens (its a racists group not a political group) – he was no democrat. I doubt he was republican. He basically had wild racist beliefs.

OCRob, if the bump stock mod is put on your gun, is it legal or illegal? I see what you were saying now though, i was looking at it from the angle of how do you make illegal (the use of a bump stock mod) when its already illegal to use them. Sale of them could be banned, and honestly that shouldn’t offend a damn person. I have some friends who are gun enthusiast and they have shot weapons with that mod, they say that shit shouldn’t be legal too. Its just way too much for a normal person to own and use.

My other point was that even if the mods are legal to purchase, people can pretty easily do it themselves. Its basically make a movable stock, with a pin in it to strike the firing pin, striking the bullet and some springs in the stock so that it pushes back off the recoil so that can happen over and over. If you are a mechanic of handyman or even just a hobby type machinist or wood worker, you have what ya need laying around in your shop. all it takes is motivation (ie the crazy to do something real bad) and a local hardware shop and you dont need to buy it online.

  73. D's avatar D says:

So if the play gets called, and the offense lines up and then you see the defense shift around, most likely they have figured out the play. This probably means we are running very static plays out of certain formations and not mixing up the different plas out of that formation.Thats just bad play design, or at least bad play calling since we are predictable and not making adjustments not to be. Thats a HC/OC fault, because they come up with the game plan, they pick the plays they are going to use and how they are going to use them.

That said, you cant have one failure out of that formation and call them boneheads, they might be using it to set up another play out of that formation that will be successful. However, we are seeing the same exact plays over and over out of those formations and they arent switching it up (ie the counter plays i was saying in past days) enough to make them not really know for sure and have to play honest. They have sold out on almost every play in the past 2 games, and we haven’t seem to make any adjustments for it.

If they come out and are lined up pretty much the same as at the time of snap, then they already knew what we were going to do, that’s full on prediction of our play calls. 100% on Gase since i have heard him several time reference himself as the person that comes up with the play calls that will be done in certain down and distance situation. Its somewhat on Cutler too, as a QB who can audible out of a play if he sees the defense lining up a certain way, but Cutler cant always predict if they are showing blitz but maybe going to back out into coverage, so he might not know if his hot route is as open as he thinks it should be. He could try some hard counts to see if he can get them to tip things off, but its more on gase in that scenario.

I honestly can predict every time we do that fucking WR screen, so i know the DC’s and defensive players can. Thats why we are so friggin awful at it. Its HIGHLY predictable just looking at our offensive formation, and we have to start running other shit out of that formation in order for it to start working.

Bill Belchick is a master of this shit and Gase likes to consider him a student of him, well learn from the master. Fuck having 1000’s of formations, each with a play or two out of them. Have like 5 formations that you run 1000’s of different plays out of. Its really hard to defend that, the defense has 0 clue what you are doing before you snap the ball. Aslo learn another lesson from them, let the defense burn you a couple times and then throw them a wrinkle they didnt expect and burn the shit out of them. Football is a very strategic game, its a big time chess match, BUT it also boils down to simple concepts for success.

We do have to perform better, we have to execute better and we need to start playing as a team than as individuals, but every players assignment, every person they have to block, every person they have to beat on their routes is a good player too. The one advantage our players should have is knowing what the play is so you have just that second or so to get the upper hand. How can we do that if they already know the plays as well as us lol. They actually are getting to the spots our players need to be faster than they do. Watch the Jets game specifically if you want to see multiple examples of that.

    • BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

I remember a game we played against denver in denver when gase was their oc and manning was their QB. They just ran the ball over and over again against us. That game changed our whole season and sealed philbins fate. We need to get to that mentality. If we can run the ball at will our offense will start to look a lot better.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

It’s possible Gase does have 1000 plays, but it’s also possible he’s simplifying and streamlining things until Cutler becomes more and more familiar with all of the plays.

      • D's avatar D says:

Its not about the 1000’s of plays, its that the ones he calls out of certain formations is the same ones he calls every time out of that formation. I could care if he had 10 plays out of 1 formation, thats a very simple playbook, but its also complex on the defense because every play, prior to snap looks just the same.

    ————————————–
Mike i use to feel similar about players that have had injuries in the past being susceptible to them, ive gotten to where i dont really feel that way. There are players playing that have such an ugly injury past you don’t think they will ever play again, and then you see them running like Ajayi does, you see them playing pretty well on defense like Smith for the Cowboys, you see them all over the place. You also see players who never get hurt getting hurt early in the season or in PS even.

I think this injury is just as flukey as any injury we have seen other players get this season. Ragland and Lawson for the bills both got hurt, they didn’t have injury history. I will say it is to his shoulder, though im not sure if its the same one that he hurt early on with the Gators, but even if he is, he would be over 3 years removed from that injury, so its hard to he cant stay healthy. He had 2 injuries in college, the shoulder and a broken arm, completely un-related and also not indicative of being injury prone.

Also as a counter point. Keenan Allen had no injury history but hasn’t made it through a year yet without being on IR, is he injury prone? Since he wasnt in college does that mean he isnt? There are plenty of examples of ones that have injury history going through their careers with few of them and plenty where they didn’t have anything and never get going because they stay on IR. I think its just the nature of the NFL, and i think a lot of it is because they aren’t allowed to spend more time doing heavier contract drills to prep up for the season.

So I’ve been saying the defense has played well enough to win all 3 games and they have. But looking at some numbers also shows we’re not making enough impact plays. Not that it would have won the last 2 games, but just some things that need to get better.

Only 4 sacks, 2 FF, 1 FR, 0 INT and just 2 PD. I know Burke recently said we’ve had some balls on the ground we didn’t recover and he counted 5 possible INTs we didn’t make. We need to apply more pressure and contest more balls in the air. That said, we’re also playing more safe in coverage that keeps everything in front of us. I think if the offense can get going, scoring more and playing with a lead, we might see some more production in these areas.

I really despise PC culture, but Newton is an idiot. The woman should have laughed back, and said it’s funny hearing a black man talking about playing QB.

it would, but then she’d get fired. You can’t say anything.

I am actually really curious how the social media judgment circus would have felt and responded if it went down that way.

        It would have been crazy
Social media would have had an aneurism

Personally though, I would rather disparage the person rather than the whole race/gender even in retaliation to a remark that demeans

Kong, this is how I see it in both network and social media.

White people, especially males – open season
Women – walk on egg shells
Black people and other non-white minorities – don’t you dare

Maybe if she said, “Maybe you didn’t hear my question correctly with those tiny little ears, there was nothing funny in what I said”, she could have gotten away with that, and that would have been pretty funny.

I’m gonna share this here. We had some bananas getting ripe but still good that we didn’t eat fast enough but a few left. I was thinking hey, maybe the kids next door would enjoy them, they’re sweet right now. Then I thought to myself, wow, think of the difference? If our neighbors next store were white it wouldn’t be a problem to offer to them. But they’re black and that could easily be looked at as a racist suggestion on my part. I then thought to myself, how sad is that, but it’s a real thing.

Insane, but I get it, and I’d probably feel the same way.

      • ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

        Just eat the damn bananas!

My gesture at first wasn’t anything about race, but I had to stop myself because of the hyper-sensitivity that we deal with these days. It made me sad that I had to even rethink it. The kids are 2nd grade, kindergarten and two years old. I was just thinking they would enjoy them. But because of some of the assholes we have in society who have used bananas to make racist points against people of color, I couldn’t do it.

When they moved in about a year ago, my wife and I had a friend of ours who makes creative cookies make us some welcome to the neighborhood style cookies. We did the same for the hispanic couple with a baby who moved in a bit later on the other side of us. They’re all very nice people. It really is sad that you have a feeling of being forced to be careful with such a simple act of kindness that means nothing discriminatory.

Thanks racist assholes and PC media. SMH

“I joke about it, that it’s like playing Battleship. You really have no clue what the other guys are doing, anyways. You try to organize it the best you can and go off tendencies. All it takes is one game, and all the sudden the defensive coordinator flips all his tendencies. That’s done a lot. You try to give the quarterback and the players as many answers as possible.”

    — Gase on making offensive calls, and got me thinking about putting our little fast Grant destroyer in play. Hard o find.
