Week 5 – Game 4 – Tennessee @ Miami

20170817-ale-dolphins-ravens-034-e1503076646588

The Tennessee Titans are coming to town, and luckily for the Miami Dolphins, we’re catching a little break.  Titans QB Marcus Mariota suffered a hamstring strain last week in their blowout loss to the Texans.  In Mariota’s place will be veteran QB Matt Cassel.  I think it’s going to take more than a break for us to beat the Titans.  It’s not that the Titans are unbeatable, because they got drubbed 57-14 last week.  The problem is, the guy on left in the picture above, has to figure out how to get the guy on the right to perform better, and start putting points on the board. Would you believe Cutler is completing 66.7% of his passes?  OK, would you believe his average yards per attempt is is a paltry 5.8YPA?  The majority of Cutler’s career, that number is 7 or better, with a couple of seasons where he had 6.6 and 6.8.  Under 6 yards per attempt is pathetic.  We have been unable to move the ball downfield through our passing game, and as of late, the running game too.  Gase has a lot of work to do.

Julius Thomas

Why is this guy still starting?  The only answer I can come up with is it’s only our 4th game.  That’s it.  He was so wide open last week against the Saints, not a player anywhere near him when Julius Thomas made his play of the year, a 23 yard reception where he was, lack of a better description, completely ignored by the Saints defense.  I don’t have game film, but this guy can’t block.  He’s not helping Jay Ajayi or Jay Cutler lining up as a TE.  I recall MarQueis Gray being a pretty impressive blocker, and not too shabby catching the ball either.  We all know Fasano can block, so how about jump starting this offense with a tandem of Gray and Fasano in a 2 TE set?  It’s been painful to watch Ajayi get the handoff, and always having to try to beat a defender just to get to the damn line of scrimmage.  Far too often this has been the case, and of course that’s not all on Julius Thomas, or any one OL, it’s all of them.  This O-line needs to find their nasty fast before the season slips too far away.

rb600-021317

With Matt Cassel starting at QB, DeMarco Murray and Derrick Henry will be shouldering the load against us this Sunday for our 1st true Home game at The Rock.  Last week Cordrea Tankersely gave us a glimmer of a pretty solid YOUNG CB tandem, with he and Xavien Howard.  I’m a fan of Byron Maxwell, despite being much maligned by our fanbase, and I’ll be honest, he didn’t play well so far this season.  He started slow last year too, but ended up playing very well for us down the stretch.  His services may still be needed, so don’t hate on him too much.  Nate Allen is exactly what I expected him to be, underwhelming.  He’s done, but he’s our guy until week 9, when newly signed S T.J. McDonald comes off his 8 game suspension, which incidentally got pushed up a week thanks to our friend Hurricane Irma.

I think it’s going to be a physical game, the Titans have fashioned themselves as a physical team, with an aggressive run blocking O-line, and the  2 horses in Murray and Henry to carry the rock.  The Titans targeted their man in the 2016 draft, and with Tunsil still available at #8, the Titans nabbed OT Jack Conklin.  Conklin is not the physical specimen Laremy Tunsil is, but that guy is all heart and desire.  He’s a very physical player who never lets up.  The Titans O-line, especially their run blocking is their strength on offense.  LT Taylor Lewan and RT Jack Conklin are the bookends, with Quinton Spain at LG, Ben Jones at C and Josh Kline at RG.    This is an old school team, coached by and old school HC, Mike Mularkey, along with some old school assistants, like Terry Robiskie and Dick LeBeau.

Speaking of Dick LeBeau, he’s been around longer than NFL films has.  Not really, but he’s been a defensive coach in the NFL for 29 years.  The Titans have a pretty good front 7, base 3-4 defense.  DaQuan and Jurrel Casey are the ends, with Sylvester Williams at the nose. Big, physical LB’s are the thing here, with Derrick Morgan, Wesley Woodyard, Avery Williamson and of course, Brian Orakpo.  Logan Ryan (from NE) and LeShaun Sims are the corners, along with Jonathan Cyprien (SS) and Kevin Byard (FS).  This season so far, even before last weeks blowout at the hands of the Texans, this defense has not been getting it done.  They have allowed 126 points in 4 games, which puts them at 30th in the NFL.  Of course, this week, we face them after a blowout loss, so LeBeau will have these guys angry and riled up.

102 Dolphins vs Jets110716

What we need is Ajayi running in space.  He’s got to have some creases to run through, and lately, they haven’t been there.  I think we all know Ajayi is the key to getting this offense going, and of course, opposing defenses do as well, which is why they have been focused on shutting him down at all costs, and it’s working.  It seems we can’t rely on Jay Cutler to throw the rock all over the yard, hitting bombs to Parker, Stills and Grant.  Maybe someday, but it hasn’t materialized yet.  Get Ajayi going, and work it from there.

GO DOLPHINS!  Zero in!  Please . . .

ER, I like bananas but my wife bought a bunch before she and her brother went to Florida to deal with the condo down there. My daughter wasn’t around a lot and though I like bananas I’m not going to eat 7 of them just to get rid of them. But that wasn’t the point of my post. We always offered neighbors tomatoes that we grew as well. It was just sad that I had to stop in my tracks because of the PC culture we live in.

I personally hate them so good thing I don’t live next to you as it would have been insulting. 🙂

Tim you rotten banana tossing fuck! Stop offering your bad fruits to the neighborhood. Last month Tim tried to unload a truck of sour kumquats to the gay couple across the street – and we all know what that means!

Not rotten you swine, ripe and sweet. Kids like sweet and they’re healthy fruits. I guess if I offered bananas or cucumbers to a gay male couple that would be wrong too. LOL

On a serious note, it really made me feel how screwed up we’re getting as a society. When food means something bad. That’s why I’ve made points in the past that food and drink are stereotypes, not racism.

My S-I-L is black and when we go to their house for Thanksgiving they make collard greens and homemade mac and cheese. That’s not racist either, that’s what they enjoy as do the rest of us. WTF are we doing to ourselves?

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Wouldn’t worry about it that much. Understand staying away from charged words, but not in offering bananas as if it is a message…..unless you are offering them to Kong. 🙂

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The reason it came up is assholes have thrown bananas at players of color at soccer and MLB games in recent times. The red alert went off in my head and made me sad.

Winston estimated he transported roughly 20 to 30 people to the hospital that evening.”

Owner’s Q after tracking him down 3 days later: “Hey Taylor told you might have the keys to my truck? All I want is the key. Other then that its all water under the bridge to me and hows the people you hauled doing?”

I would like to run more double TE.The reason is this is such a base formation, yet so versatile that you can run a bunch of plays out of it.

My vision is a double TE formation, one WR out on either side, One RB and the QB.

From this formation i can run power run, i can run counter run, i can run a sweep, to either side without tipping off what side im sweeping to. I can put a WR in motion to get them in the slot on either side, i can jets sweep, i can play action pass releasing one TE or both. It one simple formation and you have 0 clue what im going to do. Im not saying that would be the only formation i showed but it would be my base formation where most my plays ran out of.

My game plan would be to hammer home the power and counter runs, throw in some zone blocking run plays as well, and work my passing game out of the same formation with play action passing and an occasional sweep, jets sweet and reverse.

    • D's avatar D says:

After my run game was working well, if i felt like this formation was limiting me in the passing game and i was playing from behind, obviously i move to more 3 WR sets, lose a TE, etc,

  11. D's avatar D says:

There is a lot of things that most OL have never dealt with in college, and it goes past just technique. Its pretty difficult these days to be able to spot a guaranteed stud from the OL coming out of college, partially because part of it is an intangible. You can have all the gifts and training you need to play that position, but ya also have to be a guy who plays like an animal. You have to be a nasty person to really be great. A lot of the better players just dont have that switch where when they are on the field they are almost night and day compared to the person off it. I think Asiata will be fine once he settles in because i saw that kind of play on his game film, he needs to dig down and find it, and then get the strength and technique capable of letting him really turn that into a great player.

Not much power with Julius Thomas blocking
    —————————————————
Mike i probably would have him out there despite his blocking ability, but i would probably run opposite his side most the time. You cant sell out what your doing by not having a guy out there unless its his strength your playing to or you are telling everyone what you are doing. Easiest way would to be rotating all three pretty evenly and working them a little, but not a lot, disproportionately to their strength. So you would play Thomas, and he might block more consistently, then maybe every third snap, he slips out for a pass. Maybe Fasano is more a rare release on a pass play and Gray is kinda in between the two, but that just means the “suspect” Thomas is going out, but its too late when they guess wrong and Ajyai just broke it outside his even feeble attempt at a block lol. It could also be where Fasano has blocked nearly every snap he has had and then you sleep on him and he busts a really nice reception. Predictability is killing us, we gotta find as many ways not to be as we can.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Love it. Also running the ball is a mentality and Ajayi is a downhill 1-2 cut runner but always north and south as they say. He doesn’t play around if there is some push and a gap. Do that and he gets 5-10 or more regularly. He’s not going to be effective most times with the exception of a great effort when he’s being hit behind or at the LOS. That stuff is for Barry Sanders types. That’s not Ajayi.

We’re having him run with only 5 blocking at times. We end up dealing with 7 defenders. You can’t throw short stuff in spread and then look to Ajayi and expect defenses to play deep. Until you beat them at whatever it is you’re trying to do, they will crowd the box and that’s what has happened to us two weeks in a row.

If I’m Gase, I take a page out of what Dan Campbell did when he took over as interim HC. Let’s get physical in all phases. The Titans were the same opponent. LOL

  14. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I would love to run a double TE set from time to time to
but our tight ends suck Tim’s rotten bananas

We would end up having our best personnel on the sideline if we did that

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

2 TE – rotate Thomas, Fasano and Gray
2 WR – rotate Landry, Parker and Stills
RB Ajayi and I’d like to see more Drake

We need some help blocking man on man and in pass pro, even if Thomas just helps with a double team and then slips out late. There are still options to move the ball. I feel like we’re hampering the power on the ground and the vertical passing game we have due to scheme. Gase has to go with his bread and butter. It gets good times and dinner going. 🙂

MIKE E.;TO ANSWER a question you posed earlier today—–
YES, YOUNG STANGER AND I WILL BE AT HARD HEAD STADIUM THIS SUNDAY to see if our beloved Dolphins can SCORE MORE POINTS against the Titans than they did against the Jets and Saints combined!!! (We’d need to score 7, count ’em, 7 points on Sunday to top our total of 6 in our previous two games!!)
    —————–
IS NOW a good time to ask Coach Gase,”WHY has your team started off so slow in the 2 seasons you’ve been head coach???” –A loss to the favored Titans and a loss next Sunday to the HEAVILY FAVORED FALCONS in Atlanta will mean back-to-back 1-4 starts under Garse, er, I mean, GASE!!
    —————-
I BELIEVE ONE of the reasons for slow starts under Gase is CONDITIONING, CONDITIONING,CONDITIONING (yes, I know that’s THREE reasons!). Another reason is the simple fact these guys DON’T KNOW THE PLAYBOOK WELL ENOUGH TO EXECUTE GASE’S PLAYS!!!—–Confused and outta shape might be OK for “ANIMAL HOUSE” but they won’t work in the NFL!! —And speaking of “CONFUSED,” WHAT in the hell is the play caller extraordinaire doing calling a 4-yard pas route WHEN IT’S 3rd and 13?????????? IF GASE is going to put blame on some of his players (as in 8 do the right thing and 3 don’t) he also needs to blame that guy he sees in the mirror for being the shittiest play caller we’ve seen since Philbin!!!
    —————-
I UNDERSTAND GASE is stuck with perhaps the worst personnel department in the NFL. And the fault for that particular mess lies with ownership. For as long as most of you can remember, from Parcells to T-Baum, our scouting department has STUNK. But ownership refuses to clean house of the dead wood that inhabits our personnel group. The same guys who provided inaccurate judgments a decade ago for Ireland are STILL making the same mistakes under T-Baum. –UNBELIEVABLE!!!
    —————-
SO, COACH GASE, you still have my sympathies. And, with a better personnel department, I think you can turn this franchise around into a winner. But THAT won’t be enough to get us to the promised land. To do that, we’ve got to have a solid performance from the owner’s box, the personnel department, and the coaches on the field. We are not close to being a legitimate contender for the Super Bowl, and THAT’S THE TRUTH!!!

  24. Randy's avatar Randy says:

To me, the most important trait for an OL is balance. Balance when you’re in your set…when you move…when you are being leaned on. You can compensate for not being very strong…or quick, but if you don’t have good balance, you’re screwed…because your balance impacts everything. You also want to be the aggressor, but you can’t be overly aggressive because even decent players will take advantage of it….at the pro level…forget it. And, this isn’t the same as having “good feet”.
    ****
Asiata struggles in both areas. He plays like he’s the only lineman out there, and you just can’t do that. But, if they can harness this kid and get to the point they trust him to do what he’s supposed to do, he can be a good player. He’s worth a mid round pick to see what he can be.

You say all of this as though there is nothing wrong with the NFLPA donating to radical leftist agendas, whatsoever.

I wonder what half of the players think about this… guys like Ali Villanueva. I wonder what half the country thinks about this… average Joe’s who watch the NFL as a past-time who don’t want the game to represent politics or have an agenda shoved down their throat on Sunday’s. I wonder what remaining NFL sponsors think about this… especially those who are already on the precipice of jumping after all of the “kneeling” protests.

YES, by ten thousand miles. In the end, only 9 republican senators would have voted NOT to impeach Nixon. The vote to convict would have been 91-9, so Nixon abruptly resigned while he still had the option to do so.

PIGGY; Sometime I’d like you to do a little research on Senator Sam Ervin, chairman of the Watergate Committee. One time he responded to the seemingly contradictory statement of one of Nixon’s henchmen by pointing out, “I’m just a plain old country lawyer, so I’d appreciate it if you’d explain again, in simpler terms, what seemed to me to be contradictory statements.” But before the witness could respond, Senator Howard Baker of Tennessee interjected, “Mr. Chairman, before this man responds, I’d like it to be put on the record that you graduated first in your class from Harvard Law School and, for many years, you served as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of North Carolina!” Duly informed about the chairman’s background, the witness corrected his previous comments with a statement that, SURPRISE, was totally truthful and understandable, much to the chagrin of the Nixon camp.

  51. Terrorism, in its broadest sense, describes the use of intentionally indiscriminate violence as a means to create terror, or fear, to achieve a political, religious or ideological aim.[1] It is used in this regard primarily to refer to violence against peacetime targets or in war against non-combatants.[2] The terms “terrorist” and “terrorism” originated during the French Revolution of the late 18th century[3] but gained mainstream popularity during the U.S. Presidency of Ronald Reagan (1981–89) after the 1983 Beirut barracks bombings[4] and again after the attacks on New York City and Washington, D.C. in September 2001[5][4][6] and on Bali in October 2002.[4]

There is no commonly accepted definition of “terrorism”.[7][8] Being a charged term, with connotation of something “morally wrong,” it is often used, both by governments and non-state groups, to abuse or denounce opposing groups.

i don’t blame him for what SB just described but I certainly blame him and should for his comments – and way too many give him a pass.

If comments about groups of people mean nothing, it’s only a matter of time before it comes back to you and a group you belong too. If it means nothing to say anything about a group of people it becomes a social norm.

I’m just saying if being attacked for being a white, straight male offends you (and it should, it bothers me too) then don’t look the other way when some one prominent (like the president) attacks another group of people. We all have to look out for one another.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Many people felt Obama drove wedges between people. Specifically police and the black community and alienating many people with legit concerns about Muslim radicals. He has a pacifist nature and that’s fine, but that also has its limitations.

I use Obama in my examples because he was the prior president and many people act like he was loved by everyone. He was not. We’ve been talking about this divide since red and blue states were created in 2000. If that’s not a way to start a civil war amongst ourselves I don’t know what is. My political stance these days is to be a “hypocrisy watch dog” because our national debate is so filled with BS and lies. We can’t even be honest with each other in the name of our political affiliations.

Think about how in primaries candidates destroy each other, than support each other in the name of their party. Think about how Democratic candidates have said and had the same stance on illegal immigration, yet when the other party does it’s racist and anti-immigration.

Most of it is about winning elections and not the good of the people, and once again I blame “We the People” for continuing to vote for the same BS over and over. Our country is not and has never been all about who the president is. There are so many elected officials who are extremely important to our way of life.

Some apparently think it was, and they are trying their damnedest to start another one.

I get your point for sure. There are points people become divided on because its necessary to be divided. I think though in some ways he is right, because his point is we let that division go to extreme before resolving the differences. IMO it a learn from your mistakes thing. People start getting to the point where its us vs them and the only way we are going to get close is if we kill off all the ones that would be willing to fight and die to remain separated, we should start trying to find a better way to get things resolved. We need a voice of reason to drown out the voices of destruction, hate and agenda.

Piggy why are you accusing Tim of forcing his mushy bananas on his neighbors or children for that matter. Everyone knows you cant do anything with a mushy banana. A lot of people worked very hard (yes i intended that pun) to make sure that men of Tims age don’t have to have mushy bananas, so as long as his banana is mushy, just let it slide, he isnt going to harm anyone with that thing.

I saw above several of you were telling him to give it to his wife so she could take care of it,….. women have no use for mushy bananas.

I tell Adam Gase somebody hung 57 on Titans last week.

“It happens he,” he says. “Sometimes you get shut out.”

One way or another…you always pay for the banana…

Wait it sounded like to me Piggy you probably wouldn’t from some of your past stories…. Hell it sounded a lot like you’d get all the bananas you want and a free white water rafting trip to boot….

I know that it was posted a few weeks ago, but can some of you shoot out the names of some hotels? I’m going to stay on the beach, not sure where to stay (Lauderdale or Hollywood).

LOL, last time I left too much food out for them I attracted big raccoons.
    —————————————
I have some outside cats, that i feed on my deck. We have names for them, they are pets, but they mostly stay outside. They also apparently like a lot of outside cats in they literalyl hang out on the deck all day lol, they roam the yard a little, but almost never have i seen them outside our yard, and majority of the time never see them off the deck.

Either way, so we have this raccoon as well which has decided its a cat, it eats the cat food, ive seen it sunbathing on the side rails, etc. To start off it would haul ass if i came to the door and knocked on the window to scare it off. Its a big fucker now, and last few times i have gone out there to get it to leave it almost gave me a vibe that it was going to come over to be petted lol. Didn’t run off, just kinda moseyed away, and would turn around every so often and just stand up on its back feet like it wanted to play or something. That creeps me out more than when it would bolt out of there to get away, i mean sure he could have charged me when he was running away, the quick movement was a little startling, but it acting like that feels way more sinister lol.
